The loot drops for characters 10 levels below your actual character, and it is usually completely useless, like wizard hats with strength on.

Overall a great game when you are able to play it. There have been huge problems with the games need to constantly have access to servers. It is pretty effective DRM to have many client side functions happen in blizzard backend, but as it is usually the case with DRM it also is a pain in the ass of legit customers.

If this was a non-Blizzard game, developed in 3 years, my vote would be 8/10.
It's funny to play and entertaining, but it has issues that are not acceptable for a Blizzard 10-years-of-development game.

It is totally incomparable with the emotions given by D1 and D2.
At the moment the game replayability is broken by the dumb choices for the gameplay (almost 2 decades of development and they had no time to test it extensively?) and flawed mechanics.
Today Hardcore-mode is a no-way because of that.
Core game elements such as gems and items crafting are made useless by the Auction House.
Another SERIOUS MISTAKE is that you have to be ALWAYS ONLINE to play (in order to prevent cheating and piracy), but the network infrastructure is poorly designed and not capable to sustain heavy loads. The consequence is that 2 weeks after the release there are still a lot of issues (error 37, error 73, error 7003, etc) and often you are just unable to play.
The whole netcode is probably messed up (see error 3007).
Graphics is good but the atmosphere is less dark than its predecessors.
PvP is not available because they were not satisfied and they will release it later. Seriously ? years and years of development with a 100+ developers and you couldn't make PvP in time for release ?
Maybe in 10-15 patch this issues will be solved. Massive disappointment until that.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have played the other two Diablo games to the end and just completed this one on "normal".
I will start to try to ignore history and rate this for what it is.
-The persistant online connection for single player coupled with servers failing would normally fail a game just for that. The "careful" Beta testing was done, they knew what they were getting into and failed to make the necessary changes.
-The system requirements are very low which is great but it fails to make full use of a modern system on the other hand. The background images I admit are very nice but actual game play graphics or even character animations could have been more. -The various information screens and combo experience awards seem to detract from the immersive experience but that may just be personal preference. Having the character do a fist pump in the air or some alternate animation or bellow would have done far more in my opinion. All the arrows and blinking and circles on the map are way too -The configurable skills seem to hit the right balance to me. I am happy to change tactics (If you only have a hammer everything looks like a nail) so changing the tools of the character give some added adaptability and does not lock-in a character. This is a very positive area I feel but some like to have the perfect killing combo that is not easily achieved so it would upset people from that crowd.
-The auction house just breaks the system: every scrap of useful gear by EVERY PLAYER available for purchase and resale FOREVER. The AH is the primary reason for all other design considerations including the DRM since we do not want spoofing gear locally on the client end.
-The blacksmith: Doing tons of upgrades for this guy, does it ever pay off? Seemed like diminishing returns, increase stash and share with all your characters seems the way to go.

    History Considered:
-Rehash combination of the prior 2 games in scenery, locale and look. This can be good and bad.
-Standalone game with no server would have fixed launch woes and made many solo players very happy. This was their buisness decision so consequence and benefit is on their heads.
-D2 with the expansion is still better, thanks for the collectors edition including it to remind me.

Overall: For a "when it is ready" it is a too obvious money grab and people find it offensive: it appeared they ignored their fans when they claim high and low we are the primary focus so it is like being caught in a lie. Good middle of the road game with failed expectations making it rate lower.

    Considering History:

    (-CONNECTION / INTERNET-)
The bad thing with diablo 3 is battlenet. Battelnet is full of lag and the auction house does not work half the time. Also, you have to be careful, because some people including me got their account hacked.

    (-HARDCORE-)
If you like hardcore, this game is not for you unless if you dont mind being high level and dying because of the lag or bugs. Right now the game has this issue, which is the fact that when you are at position A and you try to move at position B for example. Your character will move for a second away from position A, but after that second is done you will teleport back to position A, therefore never reaching position B. Let's say your position A is next to an elite and your B is getting away from the elite. Well you wont get away at all you character is gonna moonwalk, take damage and die.

OR fall into the trap of switching to real currency and allowing Blizzard to make a cut. Blizzard was fair here, they allowed for a third option; die every few minutes. Granted they don't pull experience, just 10% durability, but they increase your death timer gradually each time you die in a short span of time. And die you will. Hell is meant to be a challenge and when I got here it challenged one thing, my patience. I was hoping for a multiplayer game that required... multiple players to work together to defeat the minions of Hell! Nope, we got a wipe fest. It doesn't matter how hard you try and merge your abilities together (which there are few that do work together) it doesn't help. The always online feature is a disgrace. It seems to me and many others that the servers are barely able to handle off-peak loads, and choke the moment evening or weekend hits.
It is unfanthomable how you can find yourself warping backwards due to lag while playing in singleplayer.
I really couldn't give a toss about interaction with other players, being able to see if my friends are online etc. I'd trade it all in an instant for some stabilty.

I hope Blizzard realises that the decision to implement such strict DRM has likely cost them more in negative reviews than ever would have been lost due to piracy. The current system punishes honest customers, and if this is the best that can be done after 12 years of developement, then i say cancel the damned launch, go back to the drawing board, and launch in 2 more years when the game is finished and able to withstand the user loads the sequal to one of the most iconic games of time is bound to attract.

What I mean is the servers are of such a bad quality that you can't play the game most of the time, which is a utter disgrace for the which delivered the well known MMORPG World of Warcraft(which has around 10-11 million players to date).

I'd recommend waiting for another year or so to play this game, hopefully by then the staff of Blizzard realizes their utter worthlessness and forfeits their jobs to someone more qualified.

I'm a long time Diablo gamer. I've been fascinated by the series since I was a kid. The first game was epic, it didn't contain any flashy effects, vibrant colours or cheesy cutscenes, it was the real deal. Later on D2 was released, it took a little while to get used to the new system with 4 acts, (later on 5 acts with D2x) as well as the new classes, which were all cool and well thought out. Once you've gotten used to it, D2x was an amazing game, and still is today. However this cannot be applied to D3. Playing D3 feels like playing a whole different game. It's very cartoonish, a bit like world of warcraft. Diablo 3 leaves no doubt who the developers where aiming at with this game, namely the premature 12 year olds. I'm assuming most kids today would get scared if they were attacked by The Butcher from D1, wildly swinging his meat clever at them. So they made the graphics cartoonish and added childish cutscenes just to prevent the 12 year old blizzard fanboys from being scared by the game. This works, obviously. However it also gives the game a cheese-factor which makes it not only childish but very immature as well. The skill-system makes it completely impossible to make any unique builds. You'll need only 1 of each character. So much for creativity and experimentating. The cutscenes in Diablo 3 are super-cheesy, such as "Maghda" presenting the butcher with the words "Meet the butcher!", well, hello there butcher, hows it going, bro? Kids and immature adults may find this amusing, but true diablo gamers will surely find it **** annoying. Also there are no set or legendary items below inferno, you can basically run through norm - nightmare - hell without finding any decent item. All you'll encounter is rares and magic items. The quests are also extremely repetitive. All you get is gold and xp. You don't get any scrolls of resistance, potions with +20 life, +5 attribution points or +skill points like you did in D2x. The developers got rid of most of the things that made D2x fun to play. Instead you get gold and xp. From the start to the finnish. Oh did I mention that you get gold and XP? Yeah that's right, gold and xp. If you are bored to death by reading those same sentences you will most likely be bored to death by playing Diablo 3. The game is also horribly imbalanced. You can get 1-shotted in hell and inferno and there is nothing you can do about it, except fleeing the mobs. Some champion packs are actually stronger than the actual bosses, how messed up is that? There is no PvP either, the developers are working on a "area-pvp" function, just like in world of warcraft. So no open world PvP. The storyline is terrible and so is the voice acting. These idiotic amateurs who made this version of Diablo 3 have no idea how to make a Diablo game so they made a smaller version of World of Warcraft and named it Diablo 3. Not onyl that, they also took a massive dump on their loyal fans who's been loyal through many years.

Playing this game with friends that were wearing nostalgia goggles was fun for an hour or two, but what is the point in this game? I know it's supposed to be all loot and story does not matter, but why loot anything in the first place? It's not like you can compete in PVP yet, and once that is released it can not possibly be fun as there are hardly any tactics. Even I, now a few days after launch have had many many problems. This is one buggy game. An example: Many people have to make another Windows account in order to log in for the first time after any updates. What to expect from this game: Boredom and even more of it. Go walk around in small maps and hover your mouse cursor over things until they die. Then pick up the "loot" and be happy your stats are now +1 when it does not matter at all to anyone including yourself once the nostalgia wears off. How is the combat refined? It is very slow paced and once you go past Act 1 your screen turns into clustered fireworks and keep pressing until the mobs have disappeared. Now people saying the opposite yell at me trying to convince me otherwise and say: Try playing a mage or witch-doctor. Really? It is not news to anyone that a mage is a glass-canon and should avoid melee attacks. You freeze them with a spell that has a cool down then walk away and shoot at them. That is your tactic through the entire game.
Yes I am a little exaggerating to get my point across, but only a little.

The story sounds interesting, then again it is full of cliches and so badly done that you could not care less.
I did not once feel motivated enough to care about any character or dialogue, even though I gave it my best and wanted to like this game because of my friends.

Besides that there is no feel of a community at all. Sure you can put items into the auction house but that is about it. Why bother making online a requirement?

Sadly it does not. Diablo III is not a bad game in terms of "start too end" story line, it's just whats in between those two points, that undoes what could have been a truly epic game. It never was going to be anything but a tedious game doing four, yes four runs to get too Inferno (Normal, Nightmare, Hell, Inferno). The epic fights I looked forward too against what I hoped would be legendary demons with unbridled power and tricks up their sleeves. Sadly it turned out to be attack, run away, attack, run away, attack, oh you're dead. The only thing I like, is my monk's ability to keep everyone bubbled and healed and still being able to deal out damage making my need to be in a group essential. Sadly some players fail to understand monks need monsters too beat on too regenerate their spirit to keep said players alive, and so they kill the monks target and then they die and blame the monk, because they didn't get bubbled or healed. LMFAO at these noobs.

Character development. Skills are great as long as you read very careful exactly what it does and what will be impacted by choosing something else. Monks are very badly screwed over by the need to use spirit to do anything cool let alone helpful. Constantly being drained of spirit and not regenerating it fast enough can lead too alot of deaths. I spent alot of time, circling monsters. singling one out away from the pack, move in, strike a few times, build some spirit up, circle away before the rest of the group has time to land too many blows. The other classes are OP and don't appear to have too much trouble with large groups. You get runes to enhance your skill, each rune adds a different type of effect too your skill. In my case I went with everything that increased my spirit regeneration. I have soloed Diablo and managed to revive my team mates for the final killing strike simply by biding my time, keeping myself bubbled and healing myself and Diablo away from their corpses. Power of the runes.

The story line is not very robust. Receive quest, go here, kill this, get this item, give it too this person, next quest. It's a rush a job. Blizzard seemed to have spent far too much time drawing pretty pictures than filling in the lay of the land, side quests of historical value and creating decent movie sequences. I'm sorry, but cartoon videos indicate you ran out of money, not that you wanted to impact the Asian market place. One decent video sequence is all your going to get folks. Side quests are laughable, some relate to current characters, most seem to be there as part of the achievement system. The storyline should have been carved into atleast three stages and money spent on refining each stage. Instead we are delivered a rip off of Titan Quest. Which again was too damn long but your fighting creatures from antique, which is cool!! I know there is an expansion pack coming, that much is obvious, you will see it if you know what too look for. Value for money. No, not really. Blizzard knows that, that's why they gave it away free for a 1 year WOW subscription. Diablo III gets a 4 out 10. Subsequent expansions won't save it. Better to go straight onto fleshing out the story line for Diablo IV.

By default the game is set to retard mode, because supposedly numbers confuse people, and the skill system is oversimplified. Elective mode and advanced tooltips have to be turned on to change this. The devs seem to think that D2 was made to be a coop pve game, I don't know how they can claim this because Blizzard North made it and they are gone. This game boils down to a loot hunt for items with a single type of stat (each class is modified greatly by 1 stat), once you get the best gear, there isn't much left to do without pvp. Once you've hit 60 on 5 characters you're pretty much done with the game, there is re-playability but no longevity. Inferno isn't fun it is boring and frustrating. The loot hunt in Diablo 2 was fun and the itemization was amazing. While D3 is supposed to be more pve oriented, party size was cut in half. People farmed in D2 so that they could obliterate other people in PK games. People farm in D3 so that they can farm more? Expand

For me, the second point that made D3 is the importance of the items, which surely comes from the presence of the House of Auctions, while the heroes stats are almost irrelevant: how can one call D3 "Action-RPG" while it is just a "click mosters and buy items" game?
If it is not enough, the graphics hasn't any mood compared to the dark one from Diablo 2, as it came from a game of 5 or 6 years ago, and you can not play really alone, and you must have a fast and cheap Internet connection to play decently.

I purchased the game on release day, and a second digital copy later that evening. I played up into Hell difficulty on my monk, and I feel I've waited long enough and given the game a fair enough chance to prove itself before reviewing it.

Overall, it has been a large disappointment. If I was rating the game on single-player merits, I'd say it's an above-average, almost good title with a 7.5 (or a 7.0 on the MC scale). The game play is fun, but the story is weak compared to the past entries in the series.

Unfortunately, it is not a single player game. It's an always online game. Even though Blizzard expects us to always be online while we're playing it, they apparently do not feel the need to have their servers available more than an average of about 18/7. That has gotten better in the last couple of weeks, but the launch was a bit of a joke and the 'maintenance' downtimes on a game that should be primarily single player are unacceptable. I'm approaching middle age now with a great job that happens to require a lot of responsibility and way more than forty hours per week devoted to it. I also have two small children. I have very limited playtime for a game and on many, many occasions when I actually found time to sit down and get a little play in the servers would be down. My wife experienced the same thing.

The reason the game is online only is because the endgame is the RMAH (Real money auction house). Seriously, your character never becomes powerful in the least, and you aren't able to customize your character to almost any degree. You're just a big naked Mr. or Ms. Potato head waiting to have leet geer plugged into you. The power is all determined by equipment with level restrictions, which is the only real reason I can see to level at all. "Well, that's all good and well, because Diablo has always been about items!" Yes, true, but decent items would actually drop for decent kills in past Diablos. The drop rate has been neutered a _lot_ in this game to try to force people into the auction house in order to field a character that can realistically hope to make it through Inferno difficulty.

Finally, battle.net is insecure. I've been using the internet for online banking, paypal, ebay, amazon 1 click purchases, credit card accounts etc. etc. the entire time and I've never had an account breached. Three weeks after the launch of D3 my account was breached and my items and gold stolen. This has been happening on a pretty massive scale.

And finally, the bnet community is asinine. I've seen some pretty bad communities form around games in the past, such as prounreal, but not on the scale as what you'll find on Blizzard's official forums. The behavior seems to be encouraged by the moderators, as well.

I bought D3 on blind faith because of Blizzard's past track record. I will not make that mistake again.

    - total need of "be online" is extremly hassling that single players doesn't deserve.
    - server problems, lag and maintenances puts players into almost slavery side and gameplay itself suffers
+ chat with friends is sometimes fun as same as occasional co-op play

    2. Graphics and Visual: PLUS
    - Everything is very colourfull so game looks like fairy tale
    - Unable to turn off smoke or water effects that consumes massive processing power.
+ Even on 6 year old machine the game runs smoothly with full details on lowest 16:9 resolution (maybe it could run smooth even on full HD resolution, but lot of processing power takes water and smoke effects)
+ Lot of items have different appearance if equiped + Areas change freguently
    + Ambient is dynamic

    3. Sound and Music: MINUS
    - Music is very soft and sometimes too quiet
    - Music tracks are sometimes identical copy or very similar variations of previous Diablo 2 songs
    - Very unbalanced sound volume of different conversations
    - Conversations and chat with followers often speak over themselves so it became sound mess + Demonical voices have nice sound (Diablo itself should have more bass)
+ Hits, blows, swings and other sounds during combat are well dynamic

    4. Interface: PLUS
    - There is no number for Health/Mana globes (only if you point on it)
    - Still flashing Inventory button / No flashing Skill button, if something new
    - Character statistics in Inventory
+ Buff / debuff icons appear if you are affected by something with clock type cooldown
+ Lots of new vital statistics like each type of regen, defense rates, offense boosters etc.
+ Clock type cooldowns on skill icons
    + Extended journal + Minimap

    5. Character classes: MINUS
    - Missing true positive hero that fights for all mankind. I think that everybody do it, because he is forced, not because he trully want to do it.
    - Each class have restriction on some type of weapons
    - Characters use only skills when attacking, so you can wear whichever allowed weapon. It only affects your power. Visualy it is confusing to see for example Monk running with spear suddenly it appears on his back while he fights with hands only and than back again he hold spear after combat.
    - Witch Doctor is out of bounds
    - You cannot distribute attribute points anymore
    - Skill tree is no more. You only unlocks skills and their upgrades (runes). All is predefined so there is no choice to take another way. You can choose freely from all unlocked skills however at the end (level 60) you have always everything. This massivelly affects replayabiity in negative way.
+ You can choose male or female for each class

    6. Enviroment and Locations: PLUS
    - Locations are smaller, there is bigger variety of them but after a few runs you find out that almost half is randomized. - Not all locations are well designed. Some of them will make you soon very plain and boring while some are very fussy.
+ Lot of objects can be destroyed whitch brings dynamic into play even if they don't drop anything.
+ You can use some enviroment like wall to crush onto enemies.
+ Enemies are not only standing on ground, but some of them are using enviroment to lurk. 7. Items: PLUS
    - You cannot equip followers with any armour (except shield)
+ Different appearance for each class
    + Crafting

    8. Objects: MINUS
    - Some objects like urns, gates or monsters are very badly pointable so you sometimes click like crazy to activate/attack them while runing around it.
    - Items on floor can be picked while holding LMB and only pointing at them and that offten fills your bag with trash.
+ Usable objects are highlited when pointing on them.
    9. Monsters: MINUS - Lots of them are very speedy so it is very hard to "catch" them with mouse. - They are overall unbalanced. Some can kill you (on harder difficulty) with one shot, some are only standing and let kill themselves. - Some creatures just still run away what is very frustrating for close combat classes. + Elites act like they really need to kill you. 10. Story: MINUS - I caught myself a few times thinking if the are making fun of me? Tons and tons of predictable cliche. - Hollywood story + Epic cinematics that are NOT unfortunatelly replayed on higher difficulties. WHY??? It looks like the score is 6 MINUS and 4 PLUS Other things that should be spoted: - Treasure Goblins is funny challenge - Shielding and Invunerable Minions are most frustrating elite affixes - Online single player is weird and almost unacceptable - Auction House is unnecessary feature that furtunatelly can be ignored Even if my score is 4.0 the game brings me a lot of fun and I almost cannot stop playing it, but I'm affraid that as fast as it bring fun to me it will one day totally stop. Mainly because its' linearity brings almost no replayability. DIABLO 3 IS NOT RPG !!! It is rather hack'n'slash adventure...

Game play can be fun at times, but it's really all about mindless mouse button holding, hardly any of the enemies are special, including bosses, and challenge is non existent even on hardest difficulties.

Maybe if you like grinding for items you can have fun.

To me Blizzard has finally given in to making money with cheap, inexperienced designers, stringent project leadership knowing a lot about budget management, but where there is no interest in life and soul of a good game. It's all about marketing now.

What bothers me about it is that even if you're playing single player, you have to cope up with the PING. I don't live in the US but apparently my country is listed in the US server, okay thats fine, but the ping, imagine I have to cope up with 300+ ping while playing. Sometimes, the ping shot up to 1000+ and then slowly returns to 300+. To have patience with the server being overloaded on the first day is managable but this is just pure bullsh*t. I tried Europe and Asia server, both are much worse then the US server. All this would be avoided if Blizzard didn't apply the new always-online DRM to the game. Don't have internet connection? Slow internet connection? Too bad your money is now Blizzard's. Why do they use always-online DRM anyway? To avoid piracy? Please tell me they don't believe that by doing this, they would stop people from pirating their game. They only make it harder for their players to trully enjoy the game.

I'm ok with point and click games, I enjoy the heck out of Diablo, Diablo 2, Rift, Torchlight, Sacred 1 & 2 etc etc.. but Diablo 3 is just boring. Maybe its because of the fact that everytime you level up, you don't have any points to spend on stats and skills, instead you will unlock skills and runes that changes the skills effects, or the fact that you can only use 6 skills in one time. Or because the loots are SO BORING, i'm not kidding the loot is seriously boring. Remember Diablo 2? In your first mission in the Den of Evil, you already can get some sweet loots for a low level character, sure its not epic nor strong or anything but still you feel satisfied and wanting to get MORE loot when you see the magical effects that are on the equipment. Remember in Diablo 2 you can stack up 5 rune combo and have a sh*t loads of magical effects on your weapons and armor that the weapon/armor description window when you scroll over them is so long that it nearly touches the bottom of the game's window? THAT is awesome. In Diablo 3 however, you will be seeing a lot of "#% increase in gold pickup radius" or "+# (stats)" or "+# hp when you kill a monster" and some other boring effects. Seriously? Gold pickup radius? Sigh.. oh, and the Legendary items in Diablo 3 are much weaker then Magic items and much rarer, lame?

The story is okay, but some part of it are bad.. Like when Liah says that before, she doesn't believe in monsters, but around near the end of Act 2 she told that one time when she and Cain is on an adventure in some ruins (if i'm not mistaken), bunch of skeletons attacks them and she had to pull Cain out of there. .... what...?

I love the sound and music, Blizzard had always done a great job on the audios. The sound of the monsters are really good and the music fits perfectly. The voice acting, most of them are good but some can be done better.

The graphic effects are very well done BUT the graphic details however are not. The character models seems like it was done in 2006. Also, it didn't have that style of graphics that Diablo 1 and 2 had. In Diablo 2, the graphics were dark and gritty, in hell you can see some dreadful sh*ts, however in Diablo 3, they make the graphics cartoonish-like (not so cartoonish like Torchlight) and that's makes it lose the charm that Diablo 2's graphic had, even though Diablo 2's graphics were old.

One of the biggest problems I had is that you can't go back to the previous acts and kill the bosses again to get moar phat lewt. Maybe you can go back to the previous acts and somehow I didn't know about it, in that case, my bad. I still remember I used to beat the sh*t out of Diablo and Baal countless times and behold as Blue, Yellow, Orange, Green and Gold colored equipments dropped from them, that were fun as hell.

One thing I liked in Diablo 3 aside from the audio, is the boss battles. They were epic, nuff' said. If only you can go back and defeat them again anytime you want. Sigh.

You have to complete the normal difficulty first before you can play on the harder difficulties. It took me around 12 hours to finish it on normal and exploring everything from normal maps to caves and dungeons. Do you want to play a 12 hour game filled with boring loots and easy combat? Only you have to do it AGAIN in the Nightmare difficulty and AGAIN in Hell difficulty and AGAIN in Inferno difficulty? And if you want to play other characters you have to go through all of it ALL OVER AGAIN? You do? Then you might like this game.

My opinion? Save your money and buy Torchlight 2 which will come out this summer and is only 20$, it's so cheap it feels like you're ripping them off. Compared with Diablo 3 which is $60, really, get Torchlight 2. Diablo 3, dissapointing as hell.

I've gotten my wizard well into Inferno. (Despite being female myself, I picked the male wizard because the woman's voice was incredibly grating. Hers was the only voice acting that I actively loathed.) When asked about the game overall, I'd say, "eh, ok." The story is painfully short, and your character makes virtually no difference, and has no choices to make. At this point, I expectI've gotten my wizard well into Inferno. When asked about the game overall, I'd say, "eh, ok." The story is painfully short, and your character makes virtually no difference, and has no choices to make. At this point, I expect games to offer me some choices, even in a survival game. On the other hand, I found my character likable and sometimes witty. (I felt stuck with the templar companion - and he's intensely irritating. The Scoundrel grew on me, but was useless by Inferno, & the Enchantress was like nails on a chalkboard. Pink nails.) Blizzard asks you to replay the same story over and over and over - which I assume everyone knows & expected, but it got VERY old for me. As for game play & challenge, Hell was the most fun - it was fine solo. (I also played with friends & family - never the public games.) Inferno is hard, as everyone says, but mainly, annoying. Mobs have random spells - wasps buzz around bubbled & linked & spitting flames (if they did this in real life, I'd be off the planet.) I felt very limited trying to balance health & damage - it just wasn't fun, & didn't feel like using the character to the fullest - at the very time you WANT to be using all your abilities. Auction House - I hate that you have to buy gear, can't earn it other than gathering gold. Worst of all - recently they made General Chat mandatory. Before I can type "/leave general," I'm hit with gold spam. (I assume they're selling the items stolen off hacked accounts?) Every time you log in, you get hit with this, and have to leave chat (this gives plenty of time for gold sellers to spam you.) If battle.net changes this, good, but too late. Even so, after round 3, the auction house was still more interesting than the game. By the end, I felt the first round should have been optional. Nightmare felt utterly pointless and should have been either the first round, or nothing. Hell was the best - inferno is just a pain. The strategy seemed to be - "Well, I can't kite here - have to reload." I didn't mind the old fashioned styling, really - it felt like being back in an old Ultima. The armor dyes were pretty lousy, though. In conclusion - I don't hate the game - I surely don't love it. I might fiddle around on my wizard if I'm bored, but nothing could inspire me to run another character through. For one thing, the classes aren't all that different - even between ranged & melee. For another - I couldn't face cycling through that story again. Most of all, I don't want to be focused solely on buying-selling gear, and that seems to be the utter core of the game. And real money? Ha! I don't THINK so! In all, it held my attention for about a week. Expand

I have a lot of complaints about the title, but most of it wouldnt actually make me ask for a refund.
Little things like: the story/dialogue was horrible, needs a lot of balancing/stat logistics still, and crafting/jeweling is ridiculously expensive to be worth it and some other small things...

What makes me really dislike the game is the auction house/farming direction blizzard went (haven't played the game while the real $$ auction was up, but that must be much worse). I don't care about uniques or set items; its fine with me if rares are more powerful. What i hate, and i can't imagine getting better is the whole economist gameplay aspect. You gotta enjoy selling/buying stuff to get anywhere in inferno and i'm just not interested. that's it. more power to blizzard for trying to improve the trade economy, and i hope other people like it, but i hate it.
I made it to inferno before they could refund me..... that is to say the game is stupid easy. there should be no normal mode, its just a waste of time ---- nightmare would be fine for a tutorial run, but hell is where the gameplay moves past monotonous.... but it doesn't last. Also random dungeons??? whatta joke. Duels? how do you mess this up? Arena is not what i want (didn't get to try it thou). And the waypoint/game progression is just stupid; why can't i load up a game and switch acts? wtf. Oh yea, your game matching multiplayer SUCKS so bad. so bad. i really want to join a 4 player max game, occupied 90% of the time by a single afk guy.

As for things that are pretty good: the art work --- way better then i had imagined before it came out. Some levels are nasty and bloody and brutal looking (so much so that it makes the story even more lame). Some of the new gameplay mechanics are ok too, but not polished(i wouldn't believe this got as much testing as it did if i didnt know better).

Things i'm not sure about: attribute points removed. Can go either way for me. In d2 once you know what youre doing its atr points are mindless anyway. all you need to worry about is your equipment's attributes, so they just skipped a step in d3. on the other hand it just makes this shallow game more shallow. Then the skill points (or lack-there-of) are infinitely configurable; Same story, kinda nice, like many rpgs come and gone. on the other hand it kills replayablity.

All in all i'd have to ask if the dev team ever played diablo2, and if they did, why did they not learn the obvious lessons it offered as far as what to do and not to do? (AND WHY DO THEY GET SOME MORON TO WRITE THE STORY? DUDE YOUR STORIES KILLED CAIN)

Long version: As soon as I got the game running, I went into my graphics settings and was shocked to find that everything was already set to the highest level. The graphics are honestly that bad. At some points in the game, you run across staircases that do not even look three-dimensional; this is unacceptable for a supposedly triple-A, multi-million dollar title. Graphically speaking, this game would have looked outdated in 2008. If I had to describe them, I would call them cartoony, somewhat-improved isometric WoW graphics. Of course, there are many reasons other than graphics to play a game. Sadly, Diablo III is lacking in almost all of the major aspects that make a game worth playing. The story is lackluster and fails to engage. Character customization is fairly limited until you get to level 60. The voice-acting is honestly terrible. The dialogue is juvenile. I'm playing a Wizard and it angers me how **** arrogant, and one-dimensional my character seems. The voiceless text of Diablo II made for far better narration.
Numerous technical aspects detract from the game, chief among them SINGLE PLAYER LAG. Honestly Blizzard, what the flying $&^@? I cannot even begin to put into words how infuriating it is to be getting off all of these awesome combos and skillfully executed monster killchains only to die, through no fault of your own, to lag, in single player, and then be sent back to wherever you were the last time the game saved, which could have been five or ten minutes ago at the entrance to the dungeon or area.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've been playing this game since launch, and I've also just tried out the new patch 1.0.3, so I think I can now sum up pretty much everything I feel about this game.

I am not going to touch basis. If you want to see graphics, sounds, and gameplay itself, you can watch youtube.

This game has lost touch with Action RPG. In Action RPG, you start off with a weak level 1 character, slay ALOT of monsters and bosses, and equip yourself with epic items which you can go back and crush the living hell out of them. Using shortcuts to earn gold and items, Action RPG is built around farming over and over again for epic items and lots of gold. It's a never ending cycle which injects into your brain like a drug or, in simple terms, item gambling addiction.

In Diablo 3, alot of people looked for ways to farm gold and items easily, looking for shortcuts, or even exploits.
There is a difference between efficient way to farm and using exploits.

    1. Efficient way to farm - Every games which requires you to earn to progress has this. No matter how you design the game, the biggest fun comes from yourself feeling efficient and rewarding.
    2. Exploits - Using bugs or cheats to earn your way through the game. This is almost always fixed in any games you see.

Blizzard has blocked almost every possible way to farm efficiently. This took away most of the fun. They want us to play the way they designed it. They think their design will be fun for all users. Well they thought wrong. No matter what design you put into your game, the game gets boring quick without the freedom to make your own choice about how you will play the game.

With patch 1.0.3, which alot of people were waiting for it because it reduced the difficulty in Inferno, along with removing damage modifiers when partying with friends to kill monsters and bosses. However, with this patch came even worse changes, including enrage timer, significantly increased repair cost, and significantly reduced attack speed. There are other changes but these three I believe are the biggest changes.

    1. Increased Repair Cost : Blizzard wanted a way to stop people from Resurrecting and zerging the boss. However, with this came people stop trying. It's simply not worth to try hard boss anymore if you die couple of times, because repair cost is, well, beyond repair if you die couple of times with level 53 gear or above(which you should be having if you are in Inferno). This loses the whole fun of trying to beat the boss despite a bit of lack of gear.

    2. Enrage Timer : Enrage timer causes monster or boss to enrage after certain time is up, causing immense increase in damage to kill you. It basically tells you "No your gear is not enough to kill me. Please farm some more." Farming is fine, but again, because of this, it took out the "trying".

    3. Attack Speed decrease : Attack speed has been decreased by half. This is not a matter of whether decrease was a right thing to do or not, but I have never seen a patch after a game was officially released to have this much significant amount changed. I can only say this game is still in beta, and I paid 60 bucks to join the beta.

Lastly, we have the infamous Real Money Auction House system(RMAH). This was a way for Blizzard to battle against countless number of items being sold in our sites for real world currency. Did they succeed? I would say they succeeded around half. Several points to be made about this.

    1. Highest stats items will still be sold outside Blizzard owned Auction house : RMAH limits to 250 bucks, so that isn't going to stop legendary items with incredible stats which could be sold for more than 500 bucks.
    2. Destroyed Gold Auction House(GAH) : Ever since RMAH opened, all the high quality items are flooding into RMAH, forcing people to use real money to buy what they want. This totally destroyed GAH, and only worthless items are being sold at GAH now.
    3. Morally wrong : Battling illegal item trading is fine, but embracing it and bringing it to game's own system and leeching one bucks per items being sold? Something is very wrong here.

Blizzard, or the current Diablo Developers, seems to have no idea what Action RPG is. Inferno difficulty was a gamble in some way, and no Diablo Fan ever asked for insane difficulty mode where we need to farm for a year to get our characters epic-ed out. It looks like they forgot what "Fun means".

After merging with Activision, Blizzard has become a money hungry game company just like EA. It's not the Blizzard we all knew.

RIP Blizzard we will miss you.

DRM has a lot of arguments for it, but in this instance what it prominently serves to do is deter the experience, and this is especially punishing when considering a single player. Understandably there were server outages on release and that's to be expected but the game still suffers from frequent downtime (this mostly from game breaking bugs/exploits that Blizzard attempts to rectify). Lag spikes are frequent, and the problems seem to be server side. Getting anything lower than 200ms could be classed as a miracle, so expect to frequently die from something that 'did not' reach or hit you.

Class balance is tragic. As a direct result the norm seems to be to continually creep massive unannounced nerfs into the game. Most nerfs are warranted, but there is no excuse for silently releasing changes into the game when it effectively neuters a hardcore player

The lack of any atmosphere, lack of customization because only 5% of the available runes are any good, no pvp, poor balance in Inferno, extremly poor boss monster design, can't play offline are just the biggest errors.

Although the game plays fluent and is fun to play for the first hours, it gets overshadowed by it countless defects. If you are not sure if you want to buy it, wait until the expansion pack. Until than, blizzard will have fixed a lot of the problems, though not all can be fixed. It has the potential for an 7/10 or 8/10, but no more.

Not a worthy Diablo 2 successor, and already now the biggest disappointment in 2012. The first blizzard game that I regret to have bought. From now on I will think twice before a blizzard game.

But whatever, it could still be cool, and what are the odds that all my friends will buy this game and all be online at the same time.

I got the game at its midnight release, and for the following week I honestly had a good amount of fun, spending several hours every day on the game and leveling my character. But after reaching Inferno mode, and really, mid way through Hell mode. I realized this game is almost completely pointless. Whether or not you defeat Inferno mode (I have not). Getting there becomes nothing more than an armor check and to get all the gold to get the necessary armor is just repetitive runs through one of the only four acts in the story.

Choosing different character types doesn't add much to replay value because ultimately you'll just be using the moves and buffs that allow for the most DPS or armor. There's no personalization or real thinking involved in the game. There's not much to do for fun, you don't select the moves you think are cool, it all becomes simple computations of how to do more damage and better withstand the enemies which later on in the game can almost always one-shot you. It's completely ridiculous, and there's only one minigame in the entire thing that gives you a break from the monotony (which does become repetitive and boring itself soon enough) called "Auction House"...and that game is only fun for the first few times you try it too.

I'd be lying if I said I never enjoyed this game, I really liked it for the first 40 or so hours, but after realizing what this game was really like, it's in NO way worth $60, hardly worth $6. The only fun you will have is playing with your friends, but that's a reflection of the good choices you've made with your friends and not the terrible choice you made in game purchases.

Not because of its login problems in the weeks following its launch, balancing and item drop rate issues or the lack of PVP. Not even because Diablo 3 somehow looks (and plays) like WoW in an isometric perspective. And even the fact that the auction house seemed to become way too important (pay2win) didn't bother me - I simply decided not to use it.

I shelved Diablo 3 because of something far worse: The poor gameplay design. Diablo 3 is not a good game in terms of gameplay, not even a mediocre one, it's bad. It lacks motivation, passion, soul, dedication, identification and innovation. It also misses something that makes it stand out, something unique that makes you want to play it - something that keeps you going.

Of course, the artstyle (graphics, animations, models, cgi and sound) is well done, but the game world - altough well designed - feels too mingy, you never really get "the big picture" of how vast and epic this world actually is. Even worse, there's war and betrayal going on in the world of Sanctuary - and I didn't care, although I wanted to. The game feels soulless, dead and shallow. In the end, I had to ask myself "Why am I playing this?" and sadly, there was no answer. There's something wrong with the core of this game.

I'm sorry to say that, Blizzard, but I couldn't identify myself with the game characters, and sadly, i also felt no empathy with their stories (I know, it's a Hack-n-Slay, but we're talking about Blizzard here - they always had a strong focus on good storytelling). The gameplay lacks almost everything which made the Diablo franchise so engaging and exciting; e.g. the skill system has been dumbed down way too much. Of course, there are runes, but they NEVER should have completely replaced Diablo 2's skill system! As a result, the Diablo 3 gameplay feels bland, repetitive and way too casual: In Diablo 2, you really had to think about what you were doing, but in Diablo 3, this is not the case - and maybe that's why the game feels generic.

Blizzard made game design choices which - from my point of view - turned out to be completely wrong. They should have been more focused on the development of Diablo 3 instead of putting out one WoW addon after another. I really feel bad about giving the game a 4/10, but that's what it deserves from my point of view.

    First the good points.

Combat is fun. Graphics are pretty good but nothing groundbreaking. Voice acting is generally good.

Now the bad points and there are a lot.

Itemization is horrible. In 170 or so levels I have on all my characters I have had items drop that were actually an upgrade for my character maybe 4 times, no exaggeration. Drops are almost never higher level then you that you need to grow into. They are almost always 5-10 levels lower then you, IE useless. Even at max level 60 99% of the drops are total crap. For example at 60 you need a weapon that does 1000-1600dps, and you constantly get level 60 weapon drops that have absurd DPS like 250, basically level 30-40 stats on a level 60 item. Pure vendor crap. All the gear is like this.

Because of the poor itemization you are forced to use the in game auction house to gear up buying items that players higher level then you couldn't use. This totally sucks as it's like the main game is an Ebay sim. And it gets worse. Blizzard put in a real money auction house too. So most of the great items are selling for real money.

The economy is screwed beyond belief. There is no bind in equip on items. So there are always more and more items forever. When you finally get a good item to sell you find that there are thousands of the same item already on the auction house. This makes selling anything but the very best stat items nearly impossible. There aren't enough gold sinks in game and Blizzard has done nothing about bots. So gold has so little value that everything endgame costs millions. That's a LOT to a legit casual player. At best a casual is going to make 100k in about a three hour night of playing.

The skill system is dumbed down compared to Diablo 2. There are no more skill trees. You pick your skills from pulldown menus in various categories. You can no longer switch skills on the fly with the function keys. You pick your skills and if you want to change them in the field you have to go into a menu, and there is a cooldown before you can use them. There is no more stat customization. Every class can use the exact same equipment. The only requirement is level. Builds are very limited and boring compared to the huge variety in Diablo 2. You are pigeonholed into using very specific builds just to survive.

    The game play.

    The game is pretty short.
You play it through on normal which is absurdly easy and boring.
Then you play through on nitemare which is also so easy it's boring.
Then you play through in Hell and it's pretty fun because it's about the right challenge.
Then you finally get to Inferno level hoping to get some good drops and it is nearly impossible. The majority of what's left of the playerbase is stuck in act two inferno. This is because trash mobs can 1 shot you and many elite packs has absurd affix combinations that are unbeatable. Players are literally forced to quit and restart their game because of this.

    Some general stuff.

There is no transparent map overlay that you can leave up while playing like Diablo 2.

You can no longer open a town portal and leave it open for an emergency exit. The town portal is no longer instant cast either. It is channeled and interpretable so you're never gonna escape a bad situation.

You cant skip from all the different acts and waypoints once you beat the game. You are forced to play the quests every time and if you want to switch acts you have to reload the game and choose that quest.

The music is almost non existent. This is a huge disappointment compare to the epic music Matt Uelmen did for Diablo 2.

The story is horrible, I mean REALLY bad. The villains are like cartoon Disney stuff.

The Bosses drop utter crap and are too easy, Blizzard what's you to farm the sometimes impossible to beat elite packs

The game is ONLINE ONLY. Blizzard has created the worlds first single player game that features lag, rubberbanding, and disconnects. Battlenet STILL sucks.

The game is full of duping, gold farmers and bots, just like the previous two Diablo games. Blizzard is either totally clueless on how to stop this or just don't give a damn because there people buy lots of copies of the game.

All in all, you can have fun for a month or two in Diablo 3, but there is NO WAY I would ever recommend someone pay the premium $60 for this game. There are just way too many other better and cheaper games out there. If $60 is no big deal to you check it out and decide for yourself, otherwise stay away from this game. Buyer beware, you have been warned.

However, the reason I give it such a poor score is because I was expecting to get so much more out of it than I did instead of outright quitting after a month of playing it. Simply put, the game is a colossal disappointment. There is *no* way that it took Blizzard so many years to develop this game's engine, graphics, mechanics, etc. It's painfully obvious that the game, from the ground up, was built around the Real Money Auction House business model, and that's what most of its development time was sunk into. The game is probably fun until you hit level 60 and Inferno Difficulty, when you slowly begin to realize that the game was pretty much solely designed as a cash-grab on Blizzard's part. Feedback for the game has been overwhelmingly negative, but in response to this massive blowback, Blizzard has only made changes to the game that I believe only served to make the game even worse and even more of a disappointment. Just ask someone you know who quit, and if they didn't quit before Patch 1.0.3, that patch was almost certainly what pushed them to finally quit (that was the final nail in the coffin for me). It almost looks as if Blizzard is making changes based on what is most likely to force people to use the RMAH. Meanwhile, the Blizzard employees in charge of interacting with the community via the forums remain woefully silent about everyone's main gripes with the game, addressing only things that people largely don't care about, and sometimes being downright condescending to their player base. They really come off as implying "we'll tell you what's fun, and we are making changes to the game based on what we think is fun." It's as if Blizzard is refusing to face up to the fact that most of its fans hate the game and think it's a major disappointment. Many people feel as if they were bait-and-switched, and that they were cheated and lied to, and when one does some detective work pertaining to news about the game's development from years past, it becomes obvious just how many things were shown and then cut out of the game entirely before launch. This has been a major wake-up call for droves of Blizzard's once-loyal fans who auto-purchased all of Blizzard's games. They are starting to realize that this is not the Blizzard we used to know. Unfortunately, all we're dealing with now is another big, faceless game corporation that only cares about its bottom line instead of what its customers want. With Diablo 3 being lambasted from all directions as a major failure and disappointment, and the upcoming WoW expansion being largely regarded as a joke and/or "the death of WoW," it certainly looks like Blizzard is in a downslide, with 2 of its 3 franchises essentially in the toilet. Blizzard better hope it has something damn good up its sleeve with Project Titan. Even though I got so much playtime out of this game before I got fed up and quit, I still feel cheated out of my $60 because I, and everyone, was expecting this game to have so much more longevity. Levelling up makes enemies that were impossible suddenly extremely easy. To add insult to injury, the storyline is awful. The game no longer feels scary like D2, but cartoon-esque. The auction house also ruins the game by offering items better than you ever find.

This is such a shame for a game that could have been so great. Really really disappointed with it. The Diablo franchise is dead (thankfully the D2 servers are still up!).

Of course you can grind it out and TRY to find decent gear.. but you'll find your self not farming for gear but for LARGE amounts of gold to buy 1 piece of gear... then rinse and repeat cycle. Graphics are good. Gameplay fundamentals are good. No replay value... nothing fun about it after the first 20-30hrs or when you max character.. Real money AH is a cool feature and you have the opportunity to make money. But its rare because most people don't buy gear for money, they buy GOLD for money, and then use the Gold to buy better gear on the AH. It's just a lame and vicious cycle that grows cold quickly. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE BLIZZARD, Every game they have ever made I love. NOT THIS ONE THOUGH! REALLY BIG disappointment. Game flat out sucks after 20-30hrs. GG but try again Blizz.

I have tried to rise 5 kind of characters. 3 of them are already 60 capped. My main feeling is that i am looting things this is needed for a class when i am using an opposite one. Once again, this is frustrating.

I am truly disappointed by Blizzard choices, and in the future i will consider their next games with a lot of care before buy or not it. To my eye, Blizzard is no more a good game maker. Just a business company with the following goal : make sure that people is addicted and make the maximum profit thanks to that kind of players.

I forced myself into a mindless grind upon reaching Inferno mode. The quest for "epic gear" is addictive, but it is NOT FUN. If you persevere at this level, you will find yourself constantly asking yourself "why am I doing this?". I farmed probably 200m worth of gear, yet every piece of gear that you will wear comes from the auction house - the odds of you finding something useful for your class are so incredibly low that after 500 hours of forcing myself to play this game, I have not found a single item that is useful to my Demon Hunter.

Endgame can be summed up as: -Repeat Inferno [Act you comfortable with] over and over (maybe an hour worth of content) until your eyes bleed and your brain begs you to stop.
-Every 5-10 hours you might find a semi useful item to sell on the Auction House
-Acquire enough gold through sales to upgrade 1/13 slots in your inventory. If you are expecting longevity, stay away from this game. It boggles my mind that I played as long as I did, hating nearly every minute of it.

I've spent quite some time on this one now, and i have very mixed feelings. Let's say it straight, I'm really disappointed. Most of what I'll say won't have any sense for those whose Diablo 3 is the first game from the Diablo series to be played, because it heavily relies on the game experience i had with its predecessor So, let's explore how the successor of Diablo 1 and 2, two games that were big hits and set as references for the H 'n S genre, is, after around 200h :
    - Maniability : It's as easy to control as it seems.it's instinctive if you played any H n' S game correctly done before. - Graphics : I'd distinguish 2 parts of the graphical parts of the games : The Art and The Engine. The artistic part is solid, coherent, event if i think the visibility is too much open to give any sense of vigilance, you'll rarely be surprised by what is coming. The Engine... Would it be 2004 i'd say "woaaah", but seriously, for nowadays standards... Good thing the art team did a good job coming up with a very nice result which doesn't require very detailed objects, cause the engine have random frame rate dropouts on computers which are able to run it with 20% of their capacity. The detail level of monsters is low but fine considered they are fitted for their display at screen. It could be better, but the difference wouldn't be that great. The nearly unacceptable point is the players' characters detail. Kind of thing you expect from, let's say, warcraft 3, not a game which was released 10 years later. But otherwise, it's quite pleasant to look at.
    - Music : The music isn't bad in itself. It's about, -standard-. I can't really remember it right now that I'm not in front of the game, not a proof a real quality, but it's ok. Yet, that's one of the biggest let down i had : where's the creepy, heavy atmosphere that was genially crafted by matt uelman? Without the tense atmosphere, and the open views, the dark themed diablo universe loose its purpose, that is, well, being dark, oppressive. It now feels as empty, soulless
    - Scenario : There was one? I couldn't force myself to pay it attention : Since the atmosphere of the game is gone, so is any "immersive" credibility of it's story. It's not it's not here, i just couldn't help being not interested in it. It sounded stereotypical anyway, but whatever, that's not what you search first in that genre. And if you really wonder, most review confirm it as being bad/previsible
    - Gameplay : The most important part of the game. As going on and on with the game, i wished to reach the point when it becomes good. In the end, that point didn't exists. Well, It's flawed in so many ways. I'll just list most impactfull ones. Absolutely no char customisation except items. Ridiculous damage system : All damages are based on the weapon's damage, even wizard's spells. Yea spells with an good humungous 2 handed axe are better than your average wand... There was a tear in my eye once i realized it worked that way in this opus. Reduced and barely chosable skills, because once you eliminate inefficient or useless skills, your builds are quite limited. In fact, the gameplay can be reduced by : "items, items, moar items". That's about it. By time you get what you need, any so called challenge or required strategy will be acquired by stupid griding needed to get your gear up to the requirements. And then comes in all the other things that don''t go in any of theses categories : from the vastly criticised always online system (impossibilities to play sometime, can't play without network, plus i had my share of deaths due to lag in solo games, a stupid thing in itself), the ethically questionable EULA which say you pay for a right of use, and don't own absolutely anything (seems trivial, go search forums and you'll see it's not as soon there's a disagreement with Blizzard), unresellable game, the Pay2Win system with Real Money Auction House, if you don't want to do endless grind in the game.
To tell you my feel with this game : it's like it was designed in a reverse order : We want a RMAH, so let's design the game so you rely solely on items. Just exping could be waste of that item economy, let's just put a low level cap, and remove any exp loose, and all characters the same, so very soon all the players have to care about are items. Yea that design kind of works. But when you dig it, it sucks. Really. I wish i didn't continue to play for so long trying to find a game experience this game just doesn't have, I could have tried to get a refund then, because thinking i gave them money for an about below average game apparently designed solely around the idea of making money and even depriving the customers from the right to even own what they bought just really doesn't make me happy. Please blizzard, you now earn enough money as it is, now start again to make the awesome games you used to ...

The difficulty was horribly done, no extra mechanics, no tactic was needed because it was only a gear-check. And by that I mean, if you had good enough gear, you could just slaughter your way through with ease. And because an Action House existed, the gameplay changed. Now people farmed GOLD to use in the Action House to get the best gear. This game fails on so many levels compared to Diablo 1 and 2. The story seemed like it was going to be compelling and it felt like perhaps the game was going to be a more refined version of Diablo 2. Skill systems were interesting right off because you were constantly getting new things to try every level and everything seemed like it would be useful. Items that I could use were dropping a bit less than I had hoped, but still thought the game was good.

By the end of the first act I was still liking the game, but it really did lack variety. You really only run around outside in the same kind of places and then go into a hellish type torture chamber place where zombies are being burnt and demons run at you. It still had enough variety to be entertaining though. I went into act two and thought, hey this is very similar to act 2 in diablo 2. You go to Lut Golein, it's sandy and bright and your in a market city. This is kind of neat to feel nostalgia towards Diablo 2, but at this point act 1 seemed like act 1 from before and act 2 is the same as well. You would think by now they would have come up with something new right?

Anyway, went forward through the act and it was okay. Same thing, it lacked variety and you went into the sewers ( just like in act 2 of Diablo 2). It just felt like it lacked creativity at this point and by this time my skills were starting to show problems too. Certain skills are just way more powerful than others and there was really no point in using anything other than them. They have patched this a bit, but still it's not really that balanced. You will find one thing that's best and go with that.

Enter Act 3 or should I say half an act. This act is pretty short and boring, the story at this point really gets cliche and uninteresting. I was really sad at this point because you could tell blizzard just gave up on the story and creativity. At this time you realize that items don't drop very often at all that you need because there's an auction house and they expect you to use it. So, don't expect good things to drop for you, expect things to drop for others very infrequently and then expect to have to sell them to other people, just to buy stuff for you. Auction house works great in games like WOW, but here you kinda want to find some things for your own character every now and then. It actually makes it fun to fight things and hope good stuff drops, but just don't expect that to happen often at all.

By the end of this act I was actually dreading act 4 because I felt the story was just stupid at this point and don't worry, I wasn't disappointed. The final act, which can't even be called that is about half of the size of act 3! It's set in "heaven" which could have been really cool, but ends up super boring and generic. I don't think you'll find very many people who will enjoy this act. It seems thrown together and could have been done better by almost any game company. Blizzard is better than this and I'm not sure how this managed to pass through their testing.

You beat the game, the story sucked, and guess what? Now they want you to beat it again in nightmare mode....which is about the same difficulty as normal. So you are even more bored. Then you get to beat it AGAIN....Hell mode gets harder and you learn you can actually die in this game towards act 4. By this time you have beaten the game twice and the already bad story and boring acts are pretty much loathed. You would rather be going to school or work or whatever it is you do. Hell, after beating this game 2 times at that point I would almost rather do laundry and that is saying something.

You beat the game on HELL and now have beaten it 3 friggin times, and now what do you unlock? Inferno mode! YAY! The same damn game, but now you can die in 2-3 hits. You must now gear up at this point to beat each act, and "champion" packs of monsters can kill you very quickly if you don't adjust tactics..Each class generally has a certain build they must use to get through. There is a little variety, but very little. If you are lucky enough to have good things drop for you then you might make it to act 3 and 4 relatively easy, if your unlucky expect to play through act 1 a million times in hopes you get something..ANYTHING to sell and purchase better gear. Then you finally gear up, you finally get through act 4. And you are done. Nothing else in the game to do. So why play any more? The better question is why did you beat the same game 4 times in a row, that wasn't even very fun the first time? My advice is, don't play Diablo 3 at all. If you played Diablo 2 then congratulations, you played a better game with a better story. No reason to even take a look at this. If you are really bored with life then you can take a look, but you wont find anything new.

It's the same tired old formulas repeated ad naseum. Every system is familiar and every plot point is painfully predictable.

Thankfully there is at least some entertainment to be had in playing through the game with friends. The multi-player coop IS easy to use makes grouping with friends a simple and enjoyable experience. Unfortunately this doesn't help you shake the feeling that everything you see already happened eight years ago. No meaningful new experiences are presented to the player. The graphics are new, the social experiences are novel, and the Auction House is a phenomenon bordering on the surreal, but at it's core Diablo 3 is a game we've already played.

If you want an Korean Grindfest MMO with a paid auction house, then you might enjoy this. Welcome to "Grind through the game 3 times on easy until you get to Inferno: The Game". Always Online, dumbed-down classes and gear system, lackluster story, gameplay and art design that hits a brick wall after Act 1, ridiculous gear gap between Hell and Inferno that will force you into the AH, Always Online also basically denying you your game if you have internet problems or LOL BLIZZARD SERVERS on your damn SINGLE PLAYER GAME. The fact that Hardcore mode can be influenced by the state of your internet/Blizzard's servers is almost downright sickening. The couple good things I will mention at least are the graphics, art design in Act 1, enemies that do feel like relentless hordes on occasion, animations, and the gear design is alright but definitely borrowed from WoW.

I can't argue though if you enjoy the MMO style grindfest that Diablo has now become. Overall, this was simply an Acti-Blizz cash cow that they had to milk, at the expense of all the hype and fans.

It would be hard to give this game more than 2/10 back in May 2012, when it was released. The developers worked out most of the bugs and connection problems, unfortunately not all of them.
The game itself is pretty good, but there are so many problems connected to it that it becomes a rather nerve wracking experience rather than an enjoyable game.

First of all, you need to be connected to battle.net at all times. A single disconnection caused by overloaded servers during the weekend can lead to losing your hardcore character without any chance to see it again. Another problem is the horrible economy in this game, which is mostly dominated by automatic bots selling gold. And if these huge issues weren't enough, we can take a look at the loot design. The drop rates for good items are so incredibly low that you shouldn't be surprised if you don't find any top-end item even after 500 hours played. After all, if everyone could get the top items eventually, no one would be using the auction house and Blizzard wouldn't make profit. The game currently doesn't even have PvP, which was promised to players shortly after release and it's heavily overdue.
The actual gameplay is enjoyable for a limited amount of time. If you're into grinding games, you might enjoy D3. For me, this game is not worth its price. I've been waiting patiently for developers to repent themselves after the release fiasco, but to no avail. It's a half-finished game for full price with continuous development slower than I thought is possible.

I will give this game the 4 points just because the artwork and sound really are AAA, nothing to complain about here. The game looks fabulous, although it has some performance issues and there were some nasty bugs, everything is fine from a technical and design viewpoint.

What the game lacks and what many players will confirm is:

A reason to keep playing it.

I have read most of the reviews (positive and negative) on here (and on other places). While the game has *some* positive aspects, almost all the negative critic you can read HERE are true to some degree, so I won't repeat them.

Don't read the battle.net forums. There are many trolls that are willing (for whatever reason) to defend the game and blizzard as if their life would depend on it, while the majority of people just want to say how scammed they feel when they got what they desired after the long(short?) development phase blizzard must have went through when they decided to make the game we all want.. and then decided again and then they re-decided to ..then they decided players should not make decisions... etc.

If you're curious, look up the reactions of the "fans" when jay wilson pronounced he'll leave the party.

    Bottom line:

There are other games that really are what they should be, what Diablo (Diablorina?) once was.

Which is the first and biggest problem with Diablo 3; it's a bloody mess. The difficulty has been scaled back from very hard to kindergarten-hard. The economy is broken you can buy a single item for a very cheap price and you will wreck the next 3 acts that you play. The new skill-system seemed like a good idea when you realized that it didn't encourage switching your game-style. You will literally just choose a few spells and use them act after act after act. The skills are also unimaginative and most are completely useless which is why only a chosen few are good enough for the later stages of the game. This makes everything repetitive and very grindy. Spamming a single ability over and over again until everything is dead is NOT a good way to do things. Which brings me to my next problem; the loot is so boring! In Diablo 2 you could pick up an armour and gain access to an ability that your class couldn't even use. In Diablo 2 you could get a weapon that had a chance of shooting fireballs at your enemies. In Diablo 3 you get items with stats like: +361 dexterity and +270 vitality. They do no difference whatsoever and this is really a deal-breaker in a game that relies so heavily on loot and gear.
And always online DRM is unacceptable. I'm not even mad that I couldn't play the game when I first got it. That was a long time ago and it was fixed; it's fine. But I should never ever have to be online to play an offline game. That is the dumbest thing they could've possible done and it absolutely infuriates me.
Diablo 2 improved on great features. Diablo 3 removed them.

The most fun I had playing this game was chatting with people while playing, the game is so bad it has more value of a chat room than a game. After 6 hours I wasn't having fun anymore, tried to give it a chance to 12 hours before giving out. The only thing I was impressed with was the seamless exit and retry from the auction house to the game. Too many negatives to list off, so I'll just hit the low points, the games graphics, style and control are archaic they belong in the past 10 years ago so lets start with that. The auction house ruins the joy of finding loot. O yes and the fact I per-ordered my $60 game and couldn't play for the first week. The hack-and-slash gameplay is fluid, fast-paced, and engaging. Character and class builds make sense, are flexible and easy to understand. The auction house is a structured economy that makes gold an essential liquid commodity.

    The negative:
Is not an appropriate follow-up to it's predecessor in terms of story, atmosphere, or music. Character customization is simple, but not rewarding or interesting. You can only pick a few skills to use, which creates a more restrictive play-style and, while you can experiment with many potential builds on a single character, the builds you can create aren't particularly creative.

Finding loot is usually unexciting because, generally, the best loot for your character is whatever maximizes the stat for maximum DPS. Rares, uniques, and set items drop too infrequently because if they did, their value on the auction house would plummet. While finding loot for many players was arguably one of the main draws in Diablo II, Diablo III lacks this draw because the most efficient and effective way to obtain items is through the auction house. Players end up engaging in finding loot less (again, because good items need to be extraordinarily rare to be valuable on the market), and end up grinding simply to find gold to pay for loot. If Diablo III is supposed to be an evolution of Diablo II, why are players grinding away mindlessly still? At least in Diablo II, if players were grinding, it was to find items instead of gold.

Item crafting (runewords, crafted items, etc.) is also completely missing--socketing gems in order to simply boost stats for DPS isn't the same and it lacks interesting results.

Overall, players are given less choices in what they can do while playing the game, and are forced to focus on monetizing the auction house in order to reap any benefits of having played the game. Rewards are simply proportional to the efficiency of grinding and the strength of a character build is almost entirely based on maximizing DPS.

Aesthetically, the atmosphere is not the same as Diablo II's because it deviates from the austere, dark, horror-gore style and inserts a bit of a cartoonish flare. Overall, the game is colorful, vibrant, and saturated in a way that does not suggest an impending doom or dire circumstances. Animations are over-exaggerated. Dialogue is generally good, however, as well as the voice-acting.

Diablo III might be a better game if it wasn't simply an ultra-polished Diablo II--slimmed and stripped down to its core mechanics to make the experience an exercise in maximizing player rewards. Of course, many players, including myself, criticize Diablo III mostly for not being Diablo II; at the same time, Diablo II is simply a classic, but extremely out-dated game. I think gamers have come to expect more depth in their gameplay instead of the linear grind of Diablo games, and Blizzard should not be afraid to completely overhaul their approach to the franchise in future iterations. Don't try to make a better Diablo II/III, just worry about making a Diablo IV.

This game is a 4, the reason people are rating it a 1 is because it is the sequel to Diablo 2. It basically took everything that was awesome from the genre and that game and stripped it down to a crappy, boring experience. I did not enjoy any of the time I spent playing this game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I know there's a lot of fan backlash here but I honestly can't score Diablo 3 more than 4 even though I've beaten it on all difficulties. First two difficulties: too easy thus mainly seen as a chore. Third: Just about right. Fourth: stupid, and the wrong kind of difficulty to boot I don't see how it's a skill check against the player to have your mobs stats set so that they'll one shot a wizard and now the only way to play is to kite everything. That said I did play all this before some supposed "tweaking" and before that, wizards in full resists were basically fodder in Inferno. But alas I can only review based on what I played.

The main reason I score low is:
1, We've gone from dark, gritty and scary to childish and ridiculous. This isn't diablo. I actually went back to play the original and it still has that same chilling atmosphere and feeling of dread. This game, with it's apparently 6 year old child diablo throwing pathetic taunts your way on the end level, is an insult to the senses.

2, Auction house and lack of solo offline. They killed what made diablo fun, the grinds, the chance to find something really special. There is no chance to find anything special anymore. After four playthroughs I got generic drop after generic drop, absolutely tedious. So I started to browse the auction house and soon after lost any desire to continue playing. I will not pay for loot thanks.

So yeah cheers for ruining everything that made Diablo great, blizz. All you had to do was repeat the dark atmosphere and loot grindy addiction but nah. And ignore the positive critic scores folks because they are clearly not being honest.

Blizzard didn't spend a MINUTE trying to make the game enjoyable if replayed. At certain point it's rather embarassing, when you find the templar AGAIN and quest with the SAME templar with the SAME NAME, which, finished his quest just disappears!! it would take a junior programmer an afternoon to make up something more clever, like another templar with another dialogue which at least walks away. It's really embarassing.

And then the auction house kicks in. You find out that the weapon of your dream that took you weeks to fine tune and equip, it's one third of the power that you can buy in the auction house. From that moment on you stop picking up weapons from the ground forever.

    Kills the whole game, totally.

Diablo II is one of my favorite games and certainly the game I spent most time on, so I had certain expectations for this game and sadly it disappointed many of those.

    The good:
    * The graphics and in-game interface are great. There's really not much to complain about here: The game looks good and the interface has many comfort features that make managing the items and character very easy.

    The bad:
    * Always online. There's no point in making a game that can be played alone need an internet connection. Also, the servers (Europe) have a very poor performance, even a year after the release.
    * No character customization. No stat points, no skill points. Once you're level 60, there's no reason to play the same character class again. Which leads directly to the next point:
    * No replayability. If you want your character different, you can just change the skills and items. The story is boring and the maps are always the same, too, so that doesn't exactly help.
    * Max level is too low. Absolutely stupid decision to make 60 the max level. They tried to fix it with the paragon levels, but that's just a small patch for a completely broken leveling system. Of course there will be higher levels in the expansion, why else would players buy it? Totally sad marketing strategy.
    * No ladder. Seriously? The ladder and the competition and friends that came with it was one of the greatest things about Diablo II.
    * Only 4 players per game and no open PvP.
    * No custom game names and very bad lobby interface (thanks to consoles). To create or join a game, you need to select difficulty, monster power, act and quest. That gives you about a million different combinations and with only a few thousand players online, chances are your game will be empty. All that, because consoles don't have a keyboard. Great.
    * Boring and predictable story. Not that an ARPG needs a great story, but they f*cked it up nonetheless by trying too hard.
    * No random outdoor maps. I can run through most of the game with the eyes closed by now, because the maps are always the same, except for a few randomized spots.
    * Real money auction house. The auction house is great, but including real money was a bad and greedy choice by Blizzard. Players didn't like it so instead of just removing the real money part, they will remove the whole auction house (no doubt because database queries require many servers and now that they don't make any more money with the auction house...). Greedy f*cks.
    * Removal of auction house in March 2014. Now players will get scammed on websites again when they trade items. Great.

All I really wanted was Diablo II with better graphics and interface. Diablo II had millions of fans for a good reason, but that wasn't good enough for Bli$$ard, so they went ahead and casualized the game to squeeze out every dollar they possibly can. I hope they noticed that it's going to bite them in the *ss in the long run.

The metacritic ratings tell the real story. Almost 9000 reviews. Average score 3.8. Yeah. Good f*cking job.

My all time favorite game is Diablo 2. So coming from that game, I was expecting Diablo 3 to be something at least equally as amazing, or better. Well, as it turns out, it was a huge disappointment, even after giving it a BIG chance playing the game entirely from beginning to end. Here's what I noted:

    CONS
    - The game is way too easy on normal. I did get very lucking finding magical items that gave me a combination of very high intelligence, vitality, and life regeneration (so my character was practically immortal and very strong). I think the inherent problem here is that the guys at Blizzard didn't think things through all the way and didn't correctly balance out character stats vs AI stats, making it extremely easy to kill AI monsters when increasing certain character attributes. In Diablo 2, even when finding very powerful weapons and armor, you still had a hard time killing bosses and such on Normal mode. In this game, I literally killed Diablo in 60 seconds.
    - Music was weak. Although a very minor detail to most, I feel like the soundtracks throughout gameplay in Diablo 2 were alot better and gave the game a very different feel, more mystical and creepy.
    - The cinematics weren't amazing (except for the one for the last Act, which was impressive). In Diablo 2, I remember feeling thrilled watching every cinematic for each Act.
    - I think it was so stupid not being able to use my equipped weapon. You're always forced to use your Left or Right mouse buttons for a specific skill you choose, and your weapon's damage is the determining factor of how much damage your skill does. That's stupid. You should be able to use your weapon freely, and it should have its own damage, and your skills should have their own damage and you should be able to use those separately.
    - I thought the characters looked pretty weak. I selected a wizard, and my character just looked like an adolescent. In Diablo 2, I remember the necromancer looking strong and powerful in the character selection screen (again, probably for minor detail for some, but for me it was just another little thing that showed me there was lack in attention to detail in this game).
    - Big lack of content. I was able to beat this game very quickly and go through the Acts fast. I feel like Diablo 2 had alot MORE maps and places to go in every Act.
    - Having to be always online to play the game was a HUGE mistake. I have one of the fastest internet service packages on the market, and even with that I still experienced lag many times while playing the game. It was extremely annoying hitting barrels and watching it shatter 10 seconds later.
    - I don't like that you couldn't really increase your Arcane Power (which used to be your Manna). Sometimes, you would find loot that would alter it by a couple points, and leveling up never increased it. Thats just stupid. A wizard, which is what I was, should have very high Arcane Power, Low Health points.
    - You never really used potions here. Minor detail, but I liked how Diablo 2 had a wide range of potions you could use for different benefits. Here, non-existent, just a Health Potion you rarely used because either your equipment gives you insane amount of health regeneration or theres tons of health globes laying around (I didn't like the health globes).

    PROS
    - Graphics are an improvement.
    - Being able to remove gems from socketed items is an improvement, as well as combining gems to craft better gems. Huge plus.
    - I like that you were able to craft items using an Artisan, which before, in Diablo 2, was only restricted to the Horadric cube. Even though most of your good items will be found in loot, I was still able to craft 1 armor item that was better than what I currently had equipped.

I will say this, is the game entertaining? Yes. Is it better than many other games out there (because I do think alot of games out there in the world are just crap)? Yes. Is it worth the buy? Sure, but don't expect this to be as good as Diablo 2, because it really isn't.

I will finish by saying this, and I hope the guys at Blizzard see this. I am truly disappointed that after making millions of dollars and having had so many years to develop a good game, that Blizzard deviated so far from the original game. You should really stick to the basics to what made a previous game amazing, and not try to reinvent the wheel, just improve on things, not completely change it.

The game itself isn't that bad for people who haven't played the previous titles in Diablo, but if you've played them... you're in for a big disappointment.

The graphics weren't bad, the environment was and still is spectacular and also animations, its soundtrack is admirably good and helps giving consistency to the game. The gameplay is good, the first time you play it the main campign you see it's very easy, the second time you play it you level up the difficulty... still too easy. But if you play Inferno... Oh Good Lord! It's just a complete waste of time. The backstory was mediocre, lots of cinematics but not it won't enthrall you at any point.

I didn't like at all the auction house, I found it a very poor way of pay2win and I don't support at all those games, Blizzard got confused in a very big way creating it.

As for the game issues... Pffff, what say? At this point there will be no problems, in fact on PS4 has had many good reviews, but in its day it was awful on PC: Constat frame-drops, the always-online DRM, lagg and online errors, no PvP at launch date...

I was really hyped with this game, and it just let me down. If you're whiling to buy it, don't spend more than 30-35€, I paid the original 60€ myself and it didn't deserve it.

Initial launch was a disaster. Game itself is a mediocre at best. Bad graphics, very bad balance. Cartoonish stupid visuals and overall design brought by WoW people, cause they fired original D2 team.
Very generic story. Replay value is almost non-existent. Play D2 instead.

This game is not diablo at all, i dont know what the heck happened, its like they took a historical building and promised to jazz it up, but simply demolished it and built a new condo instead..

My one major complaint is that the game never feels very difficult, especially on Normal. There are frustrating moments, hordes of baddies, and increasing difficulty levels, but the same feeling of utter defeat never really happens as it did in the past.

For all the game's missteps, though, you certainly can't accuse Blizzard of phoning it in - if anything, the game suffers from the tendency to try a little to hard at times to evolve the design. [Aug 2012, p.61]

When it works, Diablo III is the best of the Diablo games. When it doesn't, all it does is make you mad. [July 2012, p.54]
