Bioshock Infinite is easily one of the best shooters I’ve played in the last few years. Level design is superb, and Irrational Game’s attentiontion to detail cannot be overstated. Level design is superb, and Irrational Game’s attentiontion to detail cannot be overstated. I enjoyed the original Bioshock, but this game had a more profound effect on me because recent shooters rarely deviate from Activision’s billion-dollar-making COD formula. And when developers are bold enough to trend a separate path, they hurt their titles’ chances of survival. Not Bioshock Infinite. It is deliciously crafted for the many gamers who still crave titles with depth. I ran the game on Ultra settings connected to an LED television and performance was superb. I enabled frame lock and experienced smooth performance throughout the game. Some reviewers stated that textures are poor on closely viewed objects, but that’s nitpicking. When given the options between playing a game with smooth performance or beast graphics, I generally lean towards performance. What is surprising about this game is that players get healthy dosages of both. The game looks fantastic. The developers meticulously focused on the color palette and lighting to dictate the moods of whatever environments you’re exploring. The most successful aspect of Infinite is ambiance. You move from sunny skies to dark, dreary corridors. The music really fits the environments and enhances the empty, eerie feeling of certain areas. Some parts of the score feel reminiscent of the 2005 shooter FEAR, which adds to the creepiness. The story is good, but a bit ambitious. It’s one people with either love or hate—there is no middle ground. The writers take on the hefty issues of religion, theocracy, and racism (to name a few). But they throw these issues in gamers’ faces with such force that some people will be offended, and rightly so. While exploring the world of Columbia, what truths are we to take away? Unfortunately, some gamers won’t invest the time to sift thru these issues. When shifting between different realities, the world doesn’t change all that much. In fact, it pretty much stays the same. This lack of change really disconnects you from what’s really happening and dampens your urgency to respond. Given all the time the developers put into this game, the lazy transitioning seems inexplicable. The girl you rescue is an enigma with such immense power that it’s wholly preposterous at times. Is she gifted or an X-man? Although we get some closure, we can only speculate where her power originates. The story behind the main protagonist is less hazy, but certain plot aspects are just too convenient. The pre-release hype really touted the game’s combat and skylines. Although fun, the mechanics haven’t changed all that much from the first Bioshock. The combat is merely an evolution from previous titles, but still enjoyable. If it’s not broke, why fix it? Fortunately the skylines are only a gratuitous element for battle. My annoyance came from the inability to hold additional health and ammo. If there aren’t any nearby, you must wait for your sidekick to throw supplies. This can take minutes or a few seconds, and if you need both ammo and health, it’s a guess which one she’ll actually toss you. But all this means is you must be more careful, and you can quickly get away via the skylines as your shields recharge. On medium difficulty there are tons of items lying around, so just grab things yourself and let your sidekick hide in the corner. Enemies are repetitive. What’s worse are the sparse and quick battles. Very disappointing. You’ll spend most of your time foraging. Oddly, I found the exploration strangely addictive. The beautiful world really draws you in. But by the end of the game it gets repetitive and verges on tedium. NPC’s generally ignore you as you steal from their cash registers while holding loaded weapons. Mini games are gone, so no more hacking. They’re cliché, and honestly I don’t miss them. As the game progresses, you get a sense of loneliness—emptiness. Perhaps an upside from a relatively combat-less game. At times, the ambiance truly enhances this loneliness despite being in a floating city filled with thousands of citizens. The question remains: Why couldn’t the developers deliver BOTH action and exploration? I couldn’t help the feeling I’ve played Infinite before. That’s because artistically it’s akin to Dishonored. Perhaps too much so. Dishonored offers better combat and gives players more choices. Infinite is streamlined even if the story is grandiose, and the choices you make in Infinite don’t matter in the end. If you loved the city of Dunwall, you should love Columbia just the same. My final verdict: Bioshock Infinite is a must own. Buy it for PC if you have one that can push it. Replay value is moderate even if the game's combat disappoints. Overall, Bioshock Infinite is an unevenly paced game. But it's a beautifully polished and thoughtful enough game to make it worth the wait. Expand

The atmosphere and narrative in this game are unique and immersing, and make it stand out amongst other run-of-the-mill zombie, WWII, or 21st century-based shooters. It's clear that Irrational put massive time and effort into this game's development. The game-play does echo that of the first Bioshock in some ways. Vigors are like Plasmids, and Salts are like Eve. Each gun and Vigor is upgradeable, and there are plenty of vending machines from which you can purchase supplies and said upgrades. My only real complaint about this game you can only carry up to two guns at a time. Fans of Halo or Crysis are probably used to this, but I'd personally like to have at least an additional weapon slot or two. Still, this doesn't hinder overall game-play too much. I like the fact that you don't have to babysit Elizabeth like you did Ashley from Resident Evil 4. She knows her way around a fight and knows how to assist Dewitt, even though she remains unarmed. But she never feels like a burden. Also, you don't have some Irishman asking if "you would kindly" be his errand boy every five minutes over a comm radio. You pretty much explore the world on your own as you would a Metroid game, though Elizabeth does drop hints on occasion as guidance. Though I've beaten this game once, it feels like one of those movies that has to be watched a second time in order to understand it better. Maybe I have to play through it a second time to better understand the story. Overall though, this is one of those rare moments where the game lives up to the hype, like Half-Life 2 did in 2004. The ratings, both by Critics and Users, are no joke. Try this game at least once in life. Expand

I am usually quite harsh with games since it has been a common practice for developers to shove out the same garbage year after year with little to no creativity or ingenuity but this game is one of those rare gems that surface every once in a blue moon. While not overly long it is still in my opinion a perfect length. I found myself not wanting to go to fast because I wanted to savor the story! Theres a ton to say about this game so youll have to forgive me in case i accidently overlook somehting. The game is so fine detailed, everything that has been placed in the world has a purpose. I will attempt to, with all the knowledge that i possess as a video game developer, break down the game and explain all aspects of it, reviewing the gameplay, sound assets and graphical assets. To start, the gameplay in this game is absolutely breathtaking. The very first portion of the game which was only introducing the world that is Columbia was absolutely astonishing. I was smiling throughout the entire performance that the developers had directed. The fun and games grew short as the very first moral decision practically got thrown on the table like a dead horse at a fancy dinner party. This single act revealed the very mature tones and difficult decision making in a mere moments. Once that ended the combat began. The combat is highly innovative involving gameplay that one could only dream of. Combat is intense as the game will always offer a high challenge with intelligent enemy ai, consistent insertion of diverse enemies to force you to change strategies and many fun and varying ways to kill your opponents. Regarding the two weapon carrying capacity, i truly enjoy it. It forces players to search and acquire the best weapons for the job often times creating tense situations especially when the player is low on ammo. A huge part of the combat in this game is definitely intertwined with Elizabeth. Elizabeth is far from a hinderance giving the player support with health and items. Her ability to procure items for you in the field and middle of combat has more than proven effective for me and often times rescued me from certain death. Elizabeth is a fantastic support character and i would not give her up for anything else. Another point with the combat in this game is the lack of the ability to carry medpacks or salts to recover abilities and health. This change in combat actually offers quite a bit of challenge in the game and does boost the importance of Elizabeth, although she never really needs that because she herself is an amazing character. The skyline is another amazing innovation that was created for this game combining intense speed and power combat situations which only prove to intensify already very tense combat situations. The combat is fun and highly interactive forcing players to strategize the most effective manner in which to complete the situation at hand. The music that flourishes in and out of combat to more somber or quite or even joyful moments is absolutely incredible.

The story in this game is absolutely stunning and incredibly daring involving such dangerous themes as religion, government powers, lack of seperation of church and state, racism, racial purity moral decisions and far more to list. The storyline is very well fleshed out and meshes perfectly with other aspects of the game. I shouldnt reveal much of the storyline as it requires one to see and experience for themselves but i must insist that you take your time and keep an open mind when approaching the storyline as it can become quite dark. The graphics are absolutely beautiful and the animations are breathtaking. The twenties and steampunk themes are heavy in this game and executed absolutely phenomenally. The animations make for relatable encounters with other npcs in the game most specifically Elizabeth. The saturation of the world is absolutely wonderful and the models are completely smooth and wonderful. I truly love the artistic direction that the artists took with this game. I give this game a solid 10/10 .Bioshock infinite is an absolute marvel and pinnacle astonishment of what videogames are meant to be. If you have not purchased this game as of yet i would highly reccommend purchasing it especially at full price. Missing this game is a terrible mistake and playing it is the best way to truly understand the perfection that is bioshock infinite.

The graphics and visuals were great but they made the game waaay too easy. Being set back a few feet away is not much of a punishment and if you can't really die then wheres the thrill? On top of that, what happened with the songbird?? We only saw it a few times, never got to see it or ride it. (and "controlling" it for that brief fight towards the end totally doesn't count, that was a tease) and nothing crazy happened when the songbird DID show up that we hadn't already seen in the trailers. Also, a lot of people are complaining about the ending. Please disregard all these complaints, as it's simply because they didn't pay attention to the story/they don't possess the brain power to process what happened. The plot is THE MOST complicated thing I have ever experienced, and I love it. After I finished the game I had to look up "ending explained" and such, just to see what others made of it. It's extremely intriguing and I couldn't have asked for any other ending. Now so far I've been doing nothing but smothering this game with love, so you may be wondering why I didn't give it a 10. There are several factors that lead to this. There are many small things in this game that bothered me throughout the game, such as invisible walls that prevented me from taking cover in locations that I'd originally expect to be able to go into. Also, it is possible to go ahead of the story, location wise, so I'd be able to go to location A, I wouldn't be able proceed past that for whatever reason (that is explained and is fair), but then I'd go the quest in location B where I was told to go to location A, and then Elizabeth and I would be asking "Where is this location A?", even though we were just there. Another problem I had is that some of the vigors seem rather useless and the player doesn't seem to have much incentive to use them over some of the others. For example, the water vigor (don't remember what it was called), simply seems to be worse in every way than the possession vigor, so why would I use my salt on something worse? There were various other smaller issues I had with the game, and though they were trivial, they started to add up as I went along. I feel that had Irrational just added/fixed a couple of these things, the game would be flawless. Don't listen to all the haters who're giving this game anything less than a 7, they don't have any knowledge on what they're talking about, and should be disregarded. Expand

The intricacies and boundaries of storytelling have been pushed far beyond any other game, as you discover the true story of Columbia not only through conventional dialogue, but also posters and signs littering the environment, and side conversations from seemingly meaningless people on the streets. It is better than Bioshock in a number of ways as the narrative is very deep and twisted, at the end of the game you will be all blank and shocked. Graphically the game is a visual treat as Colombia looks stunningly fresh and vivid, a perfect feel of a city floating in the sky midst of clouds and the bright shiny sun rays scattered all across the things you can possibly see, it really feels believable and real, as far as the gameplay goes its exactly what bioshock is meant to do, and this time you can use your weapons and vigors together just like in bioshock 2 which completely changes the combat system and every vigor has an alternative fire which can be used for tactical gameplay, especially on hard because the game really felt difficult. Sound design is also very good and the art direction is very strong, despite of the unreal engine showing its age now there is never a moment where i felt that the game was lacking a graphical use, the dev's managed to pull it off in a beautiful way. But graphics are really not that important in this game as its more dependent on its plot, narration and gameplay, Elizabeth is beyond the conventional AI partner that we have seen in past video games, she literally interacts with the environment in a variety of ways, helps during combat it feels like a human is controlling her, its more like an invention sort of a thing which is one of the most strongest points in the game. Its clear that Bioshock Infinite is a game made for intellectuals and a necessity for the generation to realize the definition of a stellar game, performance is also ace on the PC, even on a core 2 duo and HD 5670 i managed to pull it off using ultra textures and everything set to high along with AA, got good frames, im glad they decided to optimize it for the PC as i have read in reviews that its not so good on the consoles. This game is stellar and im happy to say my faith in gaming is restored,

Thanks Ken and Irrational!!! This is surely a FLAWLESS MASTERPIECE!

I understand that games change during development time, but Irrational continued to accept awards based on these amazing demos, and the back of the box even says "Winner of over 80 awards." Those awards were given based on the 2 "game play" demos, which have absolutely nothing to do with the game that was eventually sold to us. I'm not talking about aesthetic changes or scenery; I'm talking about severe game omissions, which were SHOWN to be in the game. Not hinted, not suggested, SHOWN. Example: In the demo, which was supposedly "game play" Elizabeth is shown creating a storm which Booker interacts with to fry a huge group of enemies. In the actual game, Elizabeth flips you coins and gives you ammo and you tell her to materialize stationary objects. That is a glaring omission, yet Irrational continued to accept the awards and use the awarded status to sell this game to us. Elizabeth was SHOWN to seriously affect your experience, and when the game comes out, she flips you coins. Unbelievable. The game that was released is still a good game, but it's not at all what was SHOWN to us for the past 2 years. This is the biggest bait and switch in gaming history. Expand

All too often games that deal in quantum physics and science fiction get lost plot holes and contrivances, but Bioshock Infinite welcomes speculation and the more you think about what's happening the more you respect all the details the writers added to the story. While there aren't too many permanent characters throughout the game, Elizabeth is easily one of the best written female characters in gaming. I couldn't possibly list half the things I loved about this game without spoiling it, but this is a game I could recommend to anyone.
Coming back to the actual mechanics of the game, the graphics are phenomenal. They run well on mid-range cards and rely on beautiful art design and animation to make Columbia one of the most beautiful venues in video games yet. The music is appropriate, but the rest of the sound design (in Bioshock fashion) is excellent, and many of the audio logs are simply chilling. Voice acting is for the most part top-notch.
If I have a complaint about Bioshock infinite, it's in the combat. Enemy AI is fairly basic and enemy variety is a bit wanting. The vigors are nice, but not as varied or powerful as before. That being said, the setting is much more open and diverse than the previous games. Still, truth be told, I preferred the original game's combat a little bit. Nonetheless, while this isn't a "flawless" game, it is a masterpiece, and it will be looked back on as an important step in gaming. It shows that there are still developers out there who look to their game as a piece of art and are willing to push boundaries.

You receive equipment upgrades entirely at random, some of which are useful, others completely wreck your character with no way to remove them. There are vigor upgrades you can only ever get using dlc, they're in the game you just can't get the requisite resources any other way.

If the game was finished it would be a solid but by no means spectacular game. It is not finished. I'm not sure it ever will be.

The imagery and art design is excellent and really makes me want to argue that video games truly are art. Throughout the entire game I wanted to explore every nook and cranny for all the subtle details in the art and environment.

The gameplay mechanics are not wildly innovative from previous Bioshock games, with Vigors now replacing Plasmids, but more polished. You same combination of firearms and powers is still as fun in Infinite as it was in Bioshock. However, Infinite boasts sky hook lines, which are sort of rail lines that you can attach yourself onto to travel around a level faster and jump/attack down onto enemies. Furthermore, your ally, Elizabeth, can open tears, which are portals into other dimensions, and bring in stuff from those worlds: such as health, ammo, or allies to help fight your enemies. I should also note that although you are escorting your AI partner Elizabeth throughout most of the game, she never becomes a burden to watch over. Once the shooting starts, Elizabeth knows how to take care of herself so you can focus on fighting the bad guys, and she will even throw you health packs, ammo, or Salts (magic potions essentially) throughout the battle when she sees you are getting low.

Storytelling and character wise, this is up there with the likes of the Half Life series in setting the tone on how to tell stories in a first person shooter. Booker is excellent as the Player Character, but it is Elizabeth who really steals the show as the story's protagonist. She is one of my favorite video game characters of all time now, Irrational Games succeeded and creating a likeable, personable, strong character in Elizabeth. Gender aside she is simply a great character. From racism, working class struggles, religious extremism, violent revolutions, and metaphysics, Bioshock Infinite covers a whole lot of ground with their themes, and I personally never felt it was too overwhelming. However, the metaphysical aspect is certainly a subject that I could see getting confusing, especially if you have been rushing through the game and not picking up voxophones and other subtlties that realy add to the story telling. It's not until many hours into the game when you discover just why it's called Bioshock "infinite." However, unlike some other recent games I did not feel the twists or the ending soiled the game. In fact by the time I got to the end it felt like the logical conclusion. All in all Bioshock Infinite is a triumph of art and storytelling in gaming. Words like "magnificent," "spectacular," and "amazing" come to mind. Simply put, PLAY THIS GAME.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Words cannot describe how amazing this game is, especially on the PC. Bioshock Infinite tells a very great story that when it comes to the end, will honestly shock and confuse many people, but in a good way. When I completed this game, I honestly didn't know how to feel about the ending, but now that I've seen it explained, I can appreciate it more. The game play is very solid, the amount of fun you can have zipping around skylines and dive bombing enemies from above is almost infinite (no pun intended), and the weapons in the game are very well made. Other combat mechanics, like tears and Elizabeth aiding you with supplies, where also very nice touches and made the combat a lot more unique, without making the game incredibly easy. The main characters in the game, Booker and Elizabeth, are probably the best duo in recent gaming. Irrational Games didn't even need to make it romantic, and I'm thankful they didn't. All they needed to do was make their relationship and their story believable (well, other than the flying cities, but I digress). The Songbird, despite not having any dialogue at all, is easily one of the best anti-heroes I've seen in a game. Not the best, but up there at least. There are also little moments in the game that truly help get some comic relief or joy in an otherwise depressing story. This includes the Lutece twins, and the scene where Booker begins playing guitar while Elizabeth sings along. Moments like these, the overall story of the game, and the great game play make this game an unforgettable experience. Play this game at all costs, and definitely get it on the PC if you have one that can run the game. Expand

While the gameplay is pretty solid, the real stars are the story and the world. The developers took a lot of big risks in this game, with a lot of decisions that could have easily backfired and ruined the whole experience. The fact that everything works so well together is remarkable in its own right. I think calling it "The greatest game of all time" like some other reviewers are is kind of a stretch, but certainly I don't think anything else coming out this year will even approach the quality of Bioshock Infinite. If you liked the first Bioshock, you probably already have this game, but if you don't you owe it to yourself to get this. If you felt that the gameplay was dull in the original Bioshock or that that lack of subtlety in dealing with broader philosophical and political concepts was problematic, you're going to find the same issues here. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I played this game on 360. While i wanted to buy it for the PC, certain limitations in my life on the day of this game's release prevented me from doing so. Also i was spurred to write this review (and finally make a metacritic account) due to a certain JOKE of a review from a panzerbadger and the many other FAKE reviews for this game on Metacritic that were only made to drop a game's user review score by a fake account. Which is ridiculous (as anyone with a brain stem or any account of maturity would likely agree) and extremely childish. In panzerbadger's review he states that to rate this game highly (id assume between an 8 and 10) you'd either have to be paid or be a stupid teenager. The main problem with that argument is that its subjective and just plain stupid. Also for someone who makes a fake account, writes one review and criticizes others for they're opinions just goes to prove who the immature a$$hole is in the conversation. Just saying... That being said i'm now moving on to review the excellence that is Bioshock Infinite! (POSSIBLE SPOILERS ALERT!!!) Let me say that for all of my life Irrational Games has yet to let me down when it comes to a big release. Bioshock Infinite hits every right note in singing the beautiful melody that is, to me, the swan song of a dying generation of consoles. For 360, PS3 and PC owners this is a sure buy and will obviously go down as one of the best games that this generation has seen. Right up there with the original Bioshock from 2007. The combat in this game takes place either in semi closed quarters or fairly open levels. It isn't exactly free roaming like i expected it to be. While this was a slight disappointment i was pleased with the amount of layers the game gives you with combat. In a normal sequence i could set up traps and lay ambushes while calling in some assistance from another reality with Elizabeth's time tears. In another i could be swinging from skyline to skyline while sniping baddies off their flying ship, or calling in for added cover from a time tear to peak and shoot from and to keep my from looking like swiss cheese. The combat in this game is visceral and satisfying! I have some gripes to go with it however. There is a 2 gun carry mechanic, much like Halo, which i do not like over BioShock's original gun wheel and the game seems to make dying even harder than the original. Dying has hardly any consequence and so while the combat is satisfying there is a distinct lack of challenge. The amount of vigors in the game is far less than the original's plasmids and the gun and vigor (aka Plasmid) customization is watered down slightly. It isn't a big gripe for me but still is worth mentioning. To make up for this they did add in a more open Gear mechanic which allows you to equip 4 pieces of clothing which boost your character's skills and add all kinds of different effects. Its very much like the Gene Tonics of the original but with a little more depth. Another small gripe is the removal of hacking however you can still turn turrets and mechanical enemies in your favor with the use of a certain vigor so in a way its not completely gone. The health and Salt (aka EVE) mechanics are different this time and don't change anything for the worse but don't really improve either. All in all, in a lot of ways, Irrational stuck to they're guns when it came to combat mechanics and that isn't a bad thing when you're building off an already amazing foundation. Visually this game does not disappoint! Infinite doesn't look very crisp on the console but it still has an amazing visual breadth to it thanks to the astounding backdrop it is set against. The wow inducing flying city that is Columbia is one of the most interesting and beautiful settings i've ever seen in a video game and is fleshed out so vividly by Irrational that I truly felt like this game took place in a real time and place. The detail and color in the city makes it pop and comes alive right before your eyes and there are so many fascinating things that you learn from the Voxophones and short films you watch throughout the game. These are the new collectibles in the game and take excellent mantle of the 1st game's collectibles. The voice work and story are stellar and absolutely do not disappoint. The story is fleshed out through bosses and conversations throughout the game and truly bring life to Columbia as you tear through civil war torn streets and floating buildings. I wish i could say more and go into more detail but metacritic won't allow it :P While i never thought it would be so Irrational really has outdone themselves AGAIN in crafting an amazing video game experience from which so many developers should and probably will build on. Infinite is exactly the kind of final hurrah for this generation that i have come to expect from such a great generation and even the hardest of the die hard BioShock fans will find much love and fun in BioShock Infinite! 10 out of freaking 10 Expand

The negatives are no way to manually save. Because frankly some cutscenes are just so impressive I want to experience them again. And the game does lull a bit in the middle. Where you're running back and forth doing similar fights. Many parts of the story at this part could have been streamlined. But to the games credit this isn't something I actually realized until i finished the game. At the moment I was too busy soaking in the experience.

And this game crushed any competition in my mind for any game I have ever previously played. Even though the gameplay is fairly linear, it is the story and the way the characters interact and develop that amazed me. I came to absolutely love both Booker and Elizabeth by the end and the development of their origins is astounding. My jaw was dropped for about a good 80% of the storyline-rich segments, and the rest of the time I was in and out of the amazing combat. The fluidity of combat in this game is some of the best I have ever experienced. For example the way you are able to shock a group of enemies, summon crows to attack them, then jump onto a skyline to just jump down onto an enemy, killing him, and assassinating his buddy by snapping his neck with your skyhook. Some of the most creative combat system I have ever seen. I would mention about the graphics, however I don't think I would be able to give a fair representation of how amazing this game really looks since my computer can only handle this game at low-medium settings, but even at that level the looks of the game are astounding.

Just the environment in the game has you hooked in so emotionally, even in the beginning when you first come to Columbia, that looking around you truly feel as if you are in the year 1912. With american flags and banners everywhere has me feeling constantly patriotic, yet with the institution of slavery still rampant in Columbia, it hit me right in the feels when you see a slave scrubbing a boardwalk as other nearby npc's are mocking them and talking down to them. One of the most emotional scenes I saw that wasn't even really a part of the story line **and I don't want to spoil anything for anyone so I'll skip when this happens** but you see a black woman who I thought I previously saw in shackles, sitting and holding her hands as if she was praying, and seeing a song about being free, it kind of sounded like amazing grace.

And that leads me into the sound is this game. If I had to rate the sound design on Bioshock Infinite on a scale of 1-10, I give it a 12. The music, the character voices, the gunshots, everything sounds so clear and perfect it pulls me in just as much as any of the visuals that accompany the sounds.

But I want to get back into the story. One thing I absolutely love about this game, which was also the case with the original Bioshock, is how you have to think about the storyline, about what's going on. Towards the end, when you finally unfold the truths of Booker and Elizabeth, as well as others, I have no better words than my mind was absolutely blown away. The depth to the storyline is so intense it had me thinking over and over again what has happened, as well as had me guessing as to what was to come. Yet, EVERY SINGLE TIME, I was amazed at what was revealed and how, whether I guessed right or not. The twists and turns and just the way this game f*cks with you mind is why I took the time to create this metacritic account 5 minutes after completing the game just to share how absolutely amazing this work of art is.

Irrational Games and Ken Levine, I need to say thank you for my new absolute favorite game. I was blown away by Bioshock, and never thought a game could top it, let alone by the same developers, yet you did it by expanding on it. This game is truly a work of art and a masterpiece and will forever go down in history, alongside the original Bioshock, as some of the greatest storylines ever written. It would take something magical, like Half Life 3 being announced and released this year to tear this game out of its position in my heart for game of the year. And now, if you'll excuse me, it's time to replay it in 1999 mode.

The plot ism complex, the character's emotions and acting are something you would see in a Award-Winning movie, and the art is simply astonishing. This is one of the few games that really get you thinking...that being said, this game will have a long lifespan and will be talked about for ages to come. The A.I are absolutely brilliant! Elizabeth didn't frustrate me at all during the game, she helped me when I was just about dead or needed some salts. This game will have some controversy because it touches on subjects that no game has ever before bu that's good! This game is fresh and unique and all I can say is, THIS IS the first next-gen game. Sure there is some driver problems but that's the graphic card manufactures faults and they will release patches in the coming days. If you're reading this review all I can tell you to do is to stop whatever it is you may be doing and PURCHASE this game, Irrational deserves it. The ending is even more captivating than the game itself...That's all I'm telling you. Expand

The character design is superb and it accomplishes something most games can't even begin to do, it makes you care for the characters, care about what happens to them. Now, the graphics, the graphics have been an hot topic here because some people say they are superb some say they suck... Well, they certainly do NOT suck.. yes, we are not talking about crysis here, but if you're making that comparison you're missing the point! This game is not hyper realistic and it doesn't try to be but what is astounding is the art direction.. the graphics are not about realism, i'm certainly not the right person to explain this but to be honest i had as many if not more "wow" moments while playing this game than while playing crysis and those "wow" moments were for completely different reasons, on crysis i'm surprised that it seems so real, here, i'm surprised it seems so beautiful! On to gameplay! Gameplay isn't phenomenal and i'd say it's the weakest part of the game, that's not to say it's bad, no! not by any stretch of imagination, it just doesn't manage to keep up with the rest of the game, gameplay is entertaining but nothing more.... The story, the story is phenomenal, the settings, and the way you interact with elizabeth, they're all exceptionally good! overall this game is a masterpiece and in my opinion will be one the defining games this gen... i was mesmerized by this game and i'll go through it again for sure!

You can only load your most recent checkpoint, and there's no clear indication of when that was. You can't quicksave or quickload, and you can't save previous saves. This prevents you from going back to re-do an area differently or to make a different decision without outright playing the game again. This game flawlessly uses contrasting moments of interactive narrative and explosively intense gunplay unlike any game before it. Zipping around the Skylines was surprisingly intuitive and intensely satisfying, while the vigors (akin to magic) and encounter design keep battles fresh and exhilerating even on a third
playthrough. Unlike most modern shooters, Infinite rewards the player on an intellectual level both in combat and narrative, touching on subjects such as the idea of American Exceptionalism, Racism and String Theory. There's not really a lot more that can be said about such a narrative-driven experience without ruining it, and it's definitely an experience you don't want ruined.

Just two pieces of advice; play on PC if you have a good system, and wait through the credits ay the end of Coutnee and Troy's "Will the Circle be Unbroken."

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was a pretty big fan of the original Bioshock though I never played Bioshock 2. I came into this game having not really payed attention to press releases other than the trailers, not really having any specific expectations for the gameplay, and not really knowing what was or was not promised. I'm going to try and review it from that perspective since it seems the most negativity I see is aimed at the lack of things apparently promised in pre-release hype. I'm also going to analyze the plot a bit so their will be spoilers. I am also going to review this from the point of view of a person who is not a huge FPS fan in general as I really am not. Gameplay: In terms of gameplay, Bioshock Infinite is not really as innovative as apparently a lot of people expected, but from my perspective, while not everything it does works perfectly, it works well enough to at least be very fun and engaging. The gameplay is less revolutionary and more like an evolution or crossbreeding of ideas from other games before it (but then again crossbreeding ideas is the cornerstone of the creative process). It has both a regenerating shield and a health bar that needs to be maintained, it has something like the Plasmids from the first game (but they really only serve to give you more options on how to approach the challenges presented to you rather than being entirely crucial to winning, and some of them are basically useless), and it has the two-guns at a time mechanic popularized by Halo so many years ago, though not all the guns are of equal usefulness. The gameplay also revolves more around larger, more open air battlefield style areas than the original Bioshock did while retaining the emphasis on making use of what is in the environment strategically, including mechanics to add and remove key elements from the environment. If you do or do not like the gameplay decisions they made will really depend on your taste in FPS gameplay mechanics in general. I personally love the more narrative focused FPS games in general over the multiplayer-focused ones and many of the design decisions here are apparently made for the sake of making the action and narrative more of the focus with a constant-flow without any sort of story-pausing abrupt interrupts, hence the tendency towards linearity, the lack of hacking mechanics and the reduction of lock picking mechanics to a single button command. I like that kind of gameplay, you may not. Story While Bioshock was already pretty heavily story driven, Bioshock Infinite is even more so, in a way, narrative is what this game is all about. The game takes place in a fantastical setting designed to spark the imagination in that unique way that has made steampunk so popular. The game is thematically very similar to the original Bioshock: It has a false utopia brimming with internal conflict upon which an outsider with an apparent connection to the place is lead to by circumstances where they get caught up in that conflict (in this case, they witness the collapse rather than arrive after it happened). Like the original bioshock, the false utopia is built upon a historical political ideology, in this case, the flying city of Columbia is based on late 19th century American Exceptionalism taken to a excessive, religious extreme. This has tended to lead to a fairly touchy matter. A number of negative reviews I have seen from users here seem to express offense at the seeming negative commentary the game is making of religious conservatives. But the thing is, no opinion from the developers is ever explicitly stated, what is implied is ambiguous and open to interpretation as there really is only one character who does not (at first) exist in a moral grey-area, and the story isn't even *about* the social commentary made anyway. The story *really* is about two outsiders caught in a conflict between two radically different and very opposite political philosophies (that are both essentially depicted negatively) and, by the second half, becoming enemies to *both* sides, and their story is really about exploring themes of fate and destiny, self-knowledge and identity, guilt and redemption, abandonment and reunion. But mostly the story is all about character, particularly the main female character of Elisabeth, much of the story focuses on *her* development as a character from a relatively innocent idealistic character to a mature, wiser, more sober character by the end. In many ways, she is the real main character, being the the catalyst for everything that happens in the game.

To sun it up Great narrative, fantastic setting, gameplay elements that work well but do not break the game when they do not. I reccomend giving it a playthrough. I'm going to give this game a score of "generally favorable" which means I have to give it an 8 since, apparently, a 7 is like an "F" for most video game reviews and all other numbers below that are basically meaningless.

Terrible F.O.V. and poor mouse settings.
Constant reminders"Are you sure you want to go to the area you just pressed yes to go to?" etc.
Elizabeth is one of the most annoying 'buddies' in a game ever, walking in front when trying to shoot enemies, talking inane crap whilst walking around you like a fly in your peripherals, not to mention her clattering shoes,(Jesus).
There's way too much money and ammo lying about, and that's on the hard setting, this just ruins any sense of tension there could of been. Pathetic A.I., you could have replaced them with potatoes and it would of been just as challenging.
Ken Levine lookalike N.P.C's? Maybe this is just me, but one of the male head models looks the spitting image of Ken Levine. I'm cool with a little 'in house' fun, but when there's only about four head models in the whole game it gets a bit tedious.
Bad collision detection. The invisible walls around lots of objects is laughable.
A talking protagonist. This doesn't work for me, but this is a personal thing I guess. As the games progressing, I don't want to be told what my characters thinking or feeling as it just destroys any sense of immersion. The Graphics are no better than a 2007 game, with bells and whistles on. Not that graphics make a game, but the masses that seem to be praising this pale imitation tend to think it's visually stunning. On the whole, it's just a terrible reproduction of the first BioShock but set in the sky for novelty. It's difficulty is so easy a child could finish it, (perhaps this explains the high scores,) and the story just feels like something a first year student would write an essay about after their first spliff. (Heavy man).
Oh I forgot to mention the Willy Wonka lift at the beginning! HaHa, that was so funny, oh it wasn't meant to be..?

WOW! Simply stunning. It feels like its been forever since such an absolutely rock solid ENVELOPING game has hit ANY system! I enjoyed Bioshock, I really enjoyed Bioshock 2, but since I picked it up on Wednesday night, this game has completely entranced me. The last time a game had this effect on me was when Fallout 3 came out, and I started playing right after work, only to look at my watch (what felt like an hour later) and realize I had to get up and go to work in 2 hours. This game is absolute gold, and I added an extra half point for the decision to NOT include multiplayer.

Everything about this game is top notch. The voice acting, the solid responsive controls, the graphics (which numerous times took my breath away.... on XBOX360 even), the sound. The weapons are all satisfying, upgradable, and feel like they do appropriate damage (I CHALLENGE you not to shout YEAH!! the first time you perform a melee execution). The beloved Plasmids have been cast aside in exchange for Vigors, which are actually even more satisfying to use (setting a group of badguys ablaze and then shooting a murder of crows at them is wildly fun) Everything was given exactly the right amount of attention. What really steals the show however is the story line. In the first two installments we had atheism and science gone awry. Now it is the Tea Party gone wild in 1912 draped in glorious retro/futuristic visuals. Instead of deep in the ocean however, someone turned the damned lights on, and now we're soaring in the clouds. This is what worried me initially since the first two games just dripped atmosphere, but here Irrational Games knocked it out of the park, blending bright airy open spaces with genuinely creepy interiors, all populated by strikingly well designed badguys. On top of all of this, they've removed most of the water from the game, which Im sure had some purists like myself wondering how it would be pulled off.... the answer is that instead of water, you can tear open the fabric of space and time, and cross dimensions, which repeatedly left me mindblown throughout the course of the game. This feeling again though reminded me of how completely immersed I was in the game, and how fully they'd suspended my disbelief. Um cons. Lets see. I had a graphics glitch at one point where a big red line appeared across the top of my screen. That is all. Yes. this game IS that good. It is seriously one of the best games I've ever played, an absolutely magnificent work of art.

I loved it, and a 9.1 user score shows that not even MetaTrolls will taint this great game like they did with ME3( I give that a 8/10, was disappointed, but still respect it). Bioshock Infinite is not perfect. Why can't we hold more than two weapons? Why can't we upgrade how many vigors we can hold? Why do we have to look at a specific place to attach to a skyline? This definitely pales in comparison to its predecessors. If anything, it's a dumb-downed version of the previous two that plays the race card with the same story plus an added heavy religious sauce. The zip line system is as another user stated just a gimmick reminding me of the same system

The game is completely linear with no alternative endings or decision making; no hacking or minigames.
Less weapons, less "power" abilities, and less interesting, slightly prettier. As another user already stated looks good from afar, but has poor looking textures up close.

I liked this game alot. This has the feel of previous Bioshock but in a completely different setting. Waiting eagerly for the next Bioshock. The graphics of the game were unbelievable. I would like to see this game again further on with a better graphics card. This game supports playing with three monitors. On the older Bioshocks you had to use a hotkey to adjust the fov so that it looked good.

Pay attention to the music, too. I don't want to spoil anything, but there's a genius in the way the game takes the familiar somewhere strange and new. In terms of combat, the basic feel will be very familiar. Columbia has its own version of Plasmids in its Vigors; liquors that, when drunk, reveal new psychic energies, allowing you to throw fireballs, send out trails of vicious crows at your enemies or suck in and discharge hostile fire. Most have a secondary fire mode, enabling traps or alternative attacks, and they're fueled by vials and bottles of salts, meaning there's no moral choice involved in getting more. Meanwhile items of clothing take the place of Bioshock's passive tonics, increasing your resistance to damage, adding ammo capacity or hitting incoming melee attackers with a dose of their own medicine. Yet you can still venture off to a room where you can loot some ammo or search for voxaphones (audio tapes that give you tidbits of background information.) My favorite character is Elizabeth, she's smart and in the beginning of the game she lightens the whole mood. You see her grow as a character, as she learns more about her parents and her whole predicament. It's really great to see the main protagonist and Elizabeth become almost partners. Religion and racism play a huge role in Columbia, this adds a whole different type of realism. It's almost like they are trying to recreate America before it's civil war. This game is one of those games; goddamn astonishing.
The story is brilliant: unlike any other Video Game story that exists at this point in time; just like the original Bioshock, you can expect a HUGE twist coming your way to blindside you senseless, with subtle hints implemented as the story progresses. However, unlike it's predecessor, the combat is bloody enjoyable at times; the inclusion of the Skyway(I think that's what it's called) mechanic keeps combat's pace fast and sometimes panicky, especially if a Handyman is coming your way, allowing you to reposition, survey the battlefield and take out your enemies as you zoom past them. But, the weapons themselves don't feel all that great, save for the shotgun and (arguably) the sniper rifle, everything else feels unsatisfying to fire.

Also the difficulty takes a nosedive towards the end; when you have a full arsenal of vigors, and fully upgraded guns, few enemies can even stand up to you as an actual threat; personally, I have found that using the Shock Jockey vigor to stun enemies, then shooting them with a shotgun worked as an instakill towards the standard, non-Heavy Hitter enemies, which is why the game just introduces more and more enemies to balance gameplay towards the later stages.

But all the nitpicks in the world couldn't reduce the quality of this game and it's story; it is an absolute must-buy as you will never experience a game such as this ever again.

None the less the characters are very interesting and are fleshed out with plenty of history.

The gameplay is fluid and fun, I'm not sure how I feel about only 2 weapons at a time but this never detracted from my enjoyment. There are less powers then in Bioshock with only 8 in the game but they are balanced so that they all feel different and can work in harmony, using more then one power at a time to dispatch groups of enemies.

The sky-rail is fun to use and can help to get out of a pinch with easy controls, though to mention people who are prone motion sickness should be cautious because the sky-lines feel very similar to a roller coaster.
The controls themselves are very nice for mouse and keyboard, with a rebind-able keys and the option to turn off mouse acceleration.
There is no map and the levels can get very big so getting lost can happen, this is where the navigation system comes in. Press N and an arrow will point the way which will help when you go exploring.

I want to get invested into the game and story, if you want to feel something for the characters the game allows for that. I wants that but if you just want to play another fps and kill some people, it allows for that as well. Though remember if you chose the latter, don't criticise the story because it will only make you look silly because this game has a great story and won't disappoint.

    Ambiance: 11/10
This is where the game really shines. Each set-piece alone could be a work of art, each architectural blend, each cultural costume. All of the visual splendor mixed together with a score that perfectly juxtaposes the glamor and grit of what Columbia represents.

    Gamplay: 10/10
I expected a rich story and beautiful visuals/music, what I did not expect was game-play (particularly combat) that surpassed Irrationals previous games in terms of enjoyment and dynamic action. This game takes everything that we loved from previous BioShock games and adds a whole new level of tactical planning and on the fly improvisation. Each combat area is a stage set for a brilliant play, each enemy adding new challenge, each weapon a chance to master. Never has combat been so challenging and satisfying in a BioShock game.

Overall: 10/10 Irrational proves once again that you don't have to pander to the lowest common denominator to create a true masterpiece.

The PC implementation is to a high standard. Unreal Engine is looking better than I've seen it before. This is helped by high resolution textures which look absolutely gorgeous. I give out-the-box multi-monitor widescreen support an A+ rating.
