Kojima nervously smokes on the sidelines. This game is great for its gameplay, graphics, and visual style, but the storyline...To understand the plot, I needed to watch several hour-long videos. 10 stoned screenwriters out of 10.

Amazing story which is displayed in a linear and movie like fashion, making it easy to sit back and take it all in. The graphics are pleasant and holds up 7 years later. The game's difficulty is not extremely difficult but it is difficult enough to give you a challenge while not getting overwhelmed.

The city in the sky is a mirror of the human history depicting various conflicts like racism, wars, wealth class differences, etc. It was a wild ride exploring the city with details like people rallying in the streets killing each other over politics and inequality.

The characters are likeable and well written. Booker is a drunk war veteran and Liz is an innocent girl who has no idea how people behave outside her castle, which ignites the perfect story potential relationship between the two characters and it is also what I liked the most about this game.

What I hated. The story is linear and choices don't make a difference but I believe that's the point the story is making. Everything comes full circle but what a horrible beautiful circle it is.

What I loved. The music is almost tailor made for Columbia. Elizabeth is a wonderful companion on your adventure through sheer wonder! I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say that this game has culture and it all seems so believable that I wonder if maybe this is really a city in the sky.

This is a must own. If not, just visit once and fall in love with the city of Columbia! If you aren't afraid of heights that is. 9 out of 10

You also find different types of clothing that grants bonuses, like a bigger mag or faster move speed. Various automated vendors sell upgrades for the many weapons and abilities you pay with the money you collect, or you buy ammo or restore your health.

The difficulty is not high, even on higher settings and your companion takes on a supportive role by delivering ammo and health if needed. The combat is similar to all the other Bioshock titles, but the new cast of enemies has done a lot to shake up the formula in my eyes.
In many ways, I preferred this game to the originals, but can also see how it did not live up the expectations of fans upon its initial release, I hold no real loyalty to the Bioshock series as I didn't play it when it initially released, so all I can say is from an outsider's perspective this is as refined and perfected that Bioshock can get. Definitely worth your time.

The gameplay is very hard to love, but either way very hard to hate, would've loved if we could've known or been warned before switching vigors, or managed to carry many more guns like previous instalments, or had the ability to see our quests and where we're supposed to go, this in my opinion, was the only thing holding the game back of earning a 10/10 score.

Where to start. Just another mediocre shooter, without any "fun while playing" without any gameplay inovations!. But this game has something different. Something more deep. The story, the music, game design, the overall feeling. I had deep artistic and mind blowing experience after the finishing the game. The story is one of the best stories in games...and that ending..... masterpiece..

Easily one of the best stories in gaming, with a beautifully designed world and strong voice acting... but, its over-hyped. The vigors and guns don't match well, and it doesn't help that you are restricted to two guns, which takes out some of the strategic elements of the game. A boss is reused three times, and besides that enemy variety is only average, with the handymen managing to actually be annoying rather than challenging. All in all this game as a game is decent but nothing special, a 6 or a 7 maybe, but its graphics and story bump it up to an 8. Expand

Very good game but the lack of fun is what keeps it from being a classic. I don’t think I can really complain about anything but the inventory system and searching ever dead body (I HATE THAT) but I just felt like much of the game was boring combat to get to the next story point. I think this would have made a much better movie than a game.

I've been reading through most of the negative reviews here and a lot of them are pretty poorly written. I'll try my best to address some of the main points that were commonly brought up in them in my review here. To start, this game looks beautiful. Does it use lots of bloom and god rays and volumetric lighting? Yes. Does this get in the way? No. Are there minor graphical issues occasionally? Yes. Bioshock Infinite isn't meant to have to-of-the-line graphics. It seems like peoples' standards for graphics are ridiculously high after having seen games like Crysis 3. People expect every single texture to have crisp definition and for the game to run on any machine. Bioshock Infinite has a very refined visual style, and the guys at Irrational Games did an amazing job at budgeting the graphics for the most optimal balance between performance and visuals to accommodate the game's art direction. It's superb. Anyone who doesn't really understand graphics won't know that this game looks amazing. Yes it has graphical issues here and there, but every game has that. Nothing is perfect. People have also been complaining about linearity, and seem to be expecting games to always have moral choices that affect the ending ever since games like Mass Effect came out. Sure, Bioshock 1 and 2 had these things, but the different endings were honestly really weak and uninspired. Infinite has a mind-blowingly bizarre and AWESOME single ending to it. I promise anyone who plays this game that they won't see it coming. Infinite has a few "choices" you can make, but they don't really change anything to be honest, and the ending kind of explains why, actually. Gameplay is what you'd expect. I really didn't like the fact that they limit you to two weapons. I love old school shooters much more, so being able to carry 8 or 10 weapons at all times is something I love, but it wasn't enough to make me hate the game or anything. The Vigors (basically plasmids) are pretty damn awesome though. Much more "inventive" than the plasmids from Bioshock 1 and 2. I would have liked to see more big battles involving sky rails, as that was easily my favorite gameplay feature. There's only 3 or 4 really enjoyable battles where you can ride sky lines and drop-attack enemies. Firefights that take place exclusively on ground tend to be a bit boring and tedious after you experience the vertical elements of the environment. They did a good job in pacing you though. There are lengthy segments where you just explore the world without having to fire your gun. In fact your character sort of holsters his weapon during these parts. The first two games were a bit different since the environment was mainly tunnels connecting large rooms. They used AI that would randomly wander around the environment and attack you on sight (except for Big Daddies), so you were getting in to fights more frequently than in Infinite. However, Infinite's environments were sprawling towns with alleys and courtyards and boardwalks that all sort of interconnect with each other, so Irrational had to compensate by scripting battles more often. The good thing is, these battles tend to be MUCH larger in scale. The drawback to this method is that everything feels more scripted in general, whereas the first two games were much more organic when it came to unimportant fights. I personally don't see this as a major issue since Infinite wasn't supposed to be just like the other two games. The brand new setting (which I prefer over Rapture; though I still LOVE Rapture) was only one of the major differences to the game. Regarding the guns, there are upgrades, but they're strictly statistical upgrades. Since you're limited to two weapons at a time, having upgrades modify your weapon's look would be a bit odd since you'd be dropping guns all the time. I really don't understand why they decided to go the two weapons only route. I guess it was to be able to make the vigor system more feasible. In Bioshock 2, you always duel wielded a plasmid and gun, but the system was really wonky and nobody liked it at all. Infinite uses the same essential system, but it's vastly improved on so it's easy to use. I guess limiting how many weapons you can carry was part of fixing the issue...though it was honestly not worth it. Again, not enough to ruin the game, but definitely a downside for me. Lastly, people crying over the slavery theme need to realize that the setting of Columbia was meant to be like Colonial America. During those times, racism was normal. When you combine those ideals with an extreme antagonist, of course it's going to be a prominent theme in the story. Hell, at one point in the game, you enter a building where they worship John Wilkes Booth and portray Abraham Lincoln as a devil. If you don't understand the significance of that, brush up on your US History. Expand

My rating is based on the super graphics and the somewhat unique approach to the coming of the messiah. The shooter end of the game is okay, but somewhat annoying. I would like to find at least one game where you can kill an opponent with one shot. Still, the game lives up to the hype, but personally I prefer the first two Bioshocks.

Where BI really hits the mark is the world and lore created. The atmosphere is almost perfect. The city is awesome, done with attention to the smallest details. It's so good it really should have been an RPG. Of course when I preordered it I knew it's an FPS game, but when you do such grand setting it's almost a waste to do "just" a shooter out of it. It would have been great if more interaction was allowed with the actors and I wouldn't had the feeling of walking amongst puppets. Despite the stuff I just mentioned, Columbia is a living city, with very nice design. The story was also good, but the writers aimed for too much and at the end I was more confused, than satisfied. The morality of the whole act is pretty shallow, after such hype I was expecting more. It's definitely for an adult audience, but stays at a level of infancy from a certain point of view. I felt, that it could have been developed much further, however it's nice to see, that some developers at least try to deal with these questions.
Now some words about the gameplay. While it isn't as great as the previous Bioshock games, it's still good. Again, the design imo couldn't reach the high level which it was aiming for. I felt a sense of "streamlining" effort to make the game comfortable for newcomers and casual gamers, which definitely hurt the experience. I missed the minigames, the hacking and the need for bringing truly strategic decisions when upgrading my stats and weapons. I could pass all the obstacles without too much effort or the need to develop strategies to beat the enemies. Near the end some creatures forced me to think through which gun is the most useful in the situation, but that's it. Elizabeth powers are make you much stronger, than you need to be. And if it seems that you will be beat down in a few moments she is always there with ammo or a medical bag. This gave me the feeling, that I can play as stupidly as I want and there won't be any consequences.
Summary: Despite the criticism above, Bioshock Infinite is still a great game, recommended.

The gameplay however, did not live up to my expectations. The presence of Elizabeth constantly handing you ammo and salts trivialized the otherwise frantic hunt for ammo and the need to try new weapons based on what was available. The enemy types also felt painfully repetitive and the "founder" enemy type with the machine guns felt very over used. Also, there was no need to try out any of the vigors as I progressed. Based on the descriptions, some of the first few vigors in the game (Shock Jockey, Devil's Kiss, and Murder of Crows to be exact) seemed like the best 3 vigors in the game. Same thing with the gear the first four items I found were never replaced because they seemed like the best gear I could have equipped leaving no real sense of progression throughout the campaign other than the occasional weapon upgrade.

The campaign was great but I do feel that some sections were unnecessarily elongated. During the middle of the campaign when you are searching for machines to make weapons and traveling back and forth between dimensions in the same area I did not feel any real sense of purpose and felt like I was aimlessly wandering. Additionally some aspects of the plot, while very interesting, felt overly complicated and it almost requires outside research to understand everything.

After beating the campaign, I felt no real desire to replay it. Most of the fun involved getting to the end and having everything explained to you to tie the story together. After knowing how it ends, playing the campaign again, ever on a harder difficulty, just seems like it wouldn't be as fun.

There are however pacing issues, where you spend more time searching countless containers scrounging for cash than actually shooting stuff; the first couple hours are particularly slow and tedious. There are also far too many long, scripted sequences. This is very unfortunate, as Bioshock had the perfect balance between action and story.

Graphically, and artistically, the game is very pleasant (I played on ultra settings). One of the disappointing things about the original Bioshock was that you only got a sense of the massiveness of the city in the sub ride at the beginning; the rest of the game was very claustrophobic. Not so in this game, the developers were not shy in constantly showing off Columbia's size and splendor.

All in all, it's a solid shooter with a good story, and a must for any Bioshock fans. Just don't go in expecting the same epicness of the original and you won't be disappointed.

I don't want to be done with BioShock, I want more. A position which most story tellers would want their patrons to be in. Now to critique the game. The Good I feel that much of the game's developers deserves awards big time! The sound and art in particular the composers, designers, artists. Did one almighty polish of this game. The best thing about most AAA computer games experience these days is that they are separate from Hollywood, in this case better too. In the future I have no doubt this will be even more prominent.

The Bad Balance. For a polished game being over budget and over developed the balance and combat design is far sub-par of the rest of the experience. Partially understandable, since in a lot of places the combat takes a back seat to the overall experience (within context). This combat is suppose to be largely about vigor's, whilst there was nods to it, there were no large NPC emphasis. I can count on one hand the NPC's that used vigor's. I guess it was slightly better then constant quick time events. This by far was the weakest of the overall BioShock experience, though forgiveable given the rest of the experience. Some people would say lack of manual save games, i would agree. Performance was a little gluey in some areas. The sky line. I would of preferred a little more use of it. There is a certain upgrade that makes you invulnerable jumping on and off it, that was a bit of a balance cheat, however its upto the patron to want to do that or use another character upgrade. The Ugly Character modelling was sub-par, I don't think this cities was meant to be about clones [maybe it was] I can't tell if that was a short-cut, a convenience or a limitation or if it made sense once you get most of the story. Too much of the textures were basic 3d meshes, not sure if that was intentional.

The story is neither here nor there. You can take it or leave it. Personally it left me with a bit of a headache. The gameplay is very good though. I had some of the most memorable firefights I've ever had in single player gaming and I enjoyed being able to have Elizabeth to bring in some cover or a bit of help.
One question, why did they stretch the game out by making me backtrack through a whole area?? This spoilt it!! I gave up collecting everthing and looking for everything after the first couple of hours.
I loved the start and the end but halfway through I stopped playing for 2 days and loaded Crysis 3 up again. When I got back it was worth it but you just feel cheated at times. It's as though the developers ran out of ideas and decided to pad the game out.
Don't get me wrong I enjoyed playing Bioshock Infinite but it's nowhere near a GOTY and not a 10 out of 10. If I had paid £30 for this I would have been a bit upset but I paid £35 for this and Crysis 3 together so no hard feelings 2k. In short, good game to play over Easter but if it was an Xbox game, I'd be trading it in when finished. Wait for this to drop in price, it's worth £19.99.

but most best part of game is own AI partner that you don't have keep her alive and you just can forget her and focus killing enemys also AI partner gives HP when your HP is low, she can give you ammo when ammo is low and salt when your salt is low.
Also she give you money that you can use upgrade weapons, skills and buy ammo.

The enemy AI is not the best but they give some challenge by haveing high accuracy that keeps you move alot and take cover too and some times enemy AI is just stupid and makeing then bit you easy to kill.

Now the immortality thing it's a most worst thing in the game tha made it bit too easy because every time you die you spawn in small room but all enemys you killed are dead and when you have own AI partner without she revive you on area where mostly are no enemy near the area where you died.

This would get a perfect score from me if it wasn't for just one pretty major flaw - but we'll come to that later, because it is quite literally the only downside this otherwise perfect game has.

Yes, perfect, In an age where first-person shooters are giving up the ghost and binning single-player campaigns entirely (bloody Battlefront, I'm looking at you), Bioshock Infinite proved not only could it be done well, but it can blow away anything else the genre has to offer in terms of offering a quintessential gaming experience.

The graphics are, of course, stunning, but it's the artistic direction which makes this game so good. You are drawn into this world hook, line and sinker - it's visual beauty contrasting sublimely with the ugly violence. Every character has depth, every plot point means something, and it all builds to a climactic finale that it would be an actual crime to spoil for you.

When people talk about video games as art and point to 'walking simulator' boring crap as examples of it, the reason I personally scorn at them is because of Bioshock Infinite - which is ACTUAL gaming art. A complete masterpiece, offering a totally immersive experience while giving you actual gameplay.

Which is why it's a bloody shame the actual shooting mechanics are so damn mediocre! For me, the core mechanics of a game are so central to the experience that it takes two whole points off the score. The gunplay isn't "bad" as such, just... average. The vigors aren't as impactful as the previous titles in the series and the guns are phoned in and lack any imagination and spark, which is doubly surprising given the inventiveness of the universe itself.

But it sort of doesn't matter. This is definitely a case of a game where the overwhelming positives drown out the one big negative, and does so with ease.

This game is now over two years old and obviously no bugger is going to read this, but I had to leave the review anyway. The game is a masterpiece. If you haven't played it, bloody hell, do so, and lament the fact that you probably won't play its' like again unless a Half Life 3 comes out, because the AAA gaming studios have decided that unless a game is multi-player and a military shooter, there's no point in making it. Urgh...

I took two points off of BioShock Infinite, the first being there is way, way, way too much combat in the game. Every 10 seconds it's room after room of enemy swarms, flooding the room, attacking you. I found myself enjoying the more peaceful missions better then cutting through hordes of people.

The second reason why I deducted a point was simply how linear the game was. I feel as though it could have been a little bit more open ended. I know we cannot expect this of the BioShock franchise, but a more open world would have been greatly appreciated. In a floating city driven by rail based travel, the world is fairly closed and basically pushes you through the entire story, almost as if down a hallway. All in all, it's exactly what you'd come to expect from a BioShock game, it looks good, plays good and sounds good. As always the story and characters are compelling and interesting. I am sure this will be a game of the year FPS in 2013.

A visually beautiful game. Not really in terms of cutting edge graphics or zillion polygon character models, but in the conception and execution of a floating city. The replacement of save slots and quicksaves with autosaves is a bit irritating, but not so much it'd turn you off of the game. My major issue with the game is that it's a bit long-winded, and this was only an issue for me because the plot was unsatisfying. I'm not just trying to say I didn't like the ending, I'm saying it doesn't make sense and because of that left me unfulfilled. Early on some plot devices are revealed that throw up red flags. The same brand of flags JJ Abrams uses so liberally in his narratives. If you can enjoy Lost or Alias, you'll probably be blown away by this game. Expand

I really enjoyed playing through the game. The praises well there is so much buzz around this game that I'm sure you know the good bits. There were a few irritants, though ...

    1) The enemies aren't fantastic. I don't fault the AI as much as other people; the enemies just weren't as fantastic or varied as in past Bioshock games. It's aggravating that there were even commercials

    1) The enemies aren't fantastic. I don't fault the AI as much as other people; the enemies just weren't as fantastic or varied as in past Bioshock games. It's aggravating that there were even commercials featuring the Boys of Silence enemy type, because they really do anything. The majority of the fights are between you, cops, street rabble, and a handful of robots. Combat itself is kind of boring, too, attacking with maybe a third of the available weapon types and only 1 type of enemy using anything resembling a vigor.

    2) Level interaction was weird and limited. Sometimes, I could walk off the city and die. Other times, I couldn't jump over a handrail to fight in the street.

    3) Most weapons and powers felt like a waste of time. The vigors seemed to be tailored to really specific situations, mostly, with a couple of them appropriate for general applications. The same with the guns.

The environment, which in a Bioshock game is also pretty much a character, was stunningly portrayed: the graphics, the ambient sound, the random conversations and music... I did generally find the supporting characters to be less interesting than in previous games, but this was more than made up for by the splendid duo of main characters. The story in which you find yourself is worthy of the Bioshock mantle, though far more bizarre and cryptic than previous titles. Gameplay-wise, it feels familiar enough while still introducing some awesome new features: you still fight your enemies with a combination of powers and weapons, but there are new options for utilizing the environment to your advantage (not to give any spoilers). Definitely a good choice for anyone who likes FPS games, but especially for gamers who love compelling stories. Expand

A genuinely great, and oddly influential, shooter. My biggest gripe is more how this is basically a solid sci-fi shooter instead of an immersive sim. Still very great and well-done, might have been crushed due to the weight of ambition during development. Absolutely worth playing however!

Bioshock infinite is an great game, but it unfortunately doesn't quite match the original. Ludo-narrative dissonance is very evident in this game ruining the immersion. Each area is just a shooting gallery of copy-pasted baddies that u must slaughter in order to progress. The world of Columbia itself combined with the great and mind bending story is the saving grace of the game.

This game is beautiful. The world seems complete and fully rendered. Really you feel as if you are traveling through a complete world. You aren't told "look they are racist." You can take in the economic imbalance in a glance. Really the scenery is what this game is all about. How can a floating city be treated otherwise? The plot of the game is interesting. In the end though fighting wave after wave of generic enemies to advance the plot becomes kind of a chore.
And their last act twist (which I won't spoil). It fits well. But not perfect. (which is why I give it this score) There could have been more/better forshadowing throughout. Really the problem is by seeing the world Comestock lives in and through his actions, you feel you know him. But the narrator is too much a blank slate.

The shooting mechanics are fun, as well as the items you use to incapacitate enemies. There are better shooters out there, but to be completely fair most of them are lacking in any real story or plot, and the focus of the developers was pure gameplay mechanics. The AI of Elizabeth is groundbreaking and really helps me to feel a connection with the person I'm escorting, but it's still not perfect and I will occasionally find immersion broken by her running in front of enemies that should be able to see her.

The pacing of the game is where the score takes a hit. The first few hours, albeit slow, flow smoothly and draw me into this new world. My inner adventurer is extremely pleased by it. The next 80% of the game is combat, combat, combat. It's unbelievable how many soldiers you have to fight against when the combat starts. This is an isolated city in the sky, it shouldn't feel like a spawn camp for infinite soldiers. Too many games these days will pad out areas with unnecessary combat against hordes of enemies you would never realistically encounter.

I also have my issues with the ending of the game and plot holes, but seeing as that is personal preference, I will leave them out of this review.

This game's story is simply amazing, however the only actual negative was some of the gameplay itself. The environments were great, of course, but the actual weapons felt... weak and enemies became too bullet-spongy later on in the game. Elizabeth though is a pretty interesting addition, as she runs around looking for stuff you're running low on in the middle of combat which saved my ass plenty of times. Though interesting she's almost the only actual face-to-face interaction you get beyond a few non-combat areas. And the vigors were... well they were actually pretty decent but mostly ripped from the previous Bioshock. It was more so the gun-play which was really disappointing. Things like only being able to carry two weapons pretty much forces you to carry a gun and a heavy weapon. At the end of the game ammo is very scarce and there are no vendors you can get ammo from at all. And really, it just felt terrible at points, I found myself wanting to just get combat over with just to get back to the amazing story.

I'd say its definitely worth a buy, as this is easily among the best stories ever told in a game. However in itself, not a good game.

    Story: 10/10 (amazing)
    Enviroment/World: 9/10 (awe-inspiring)
    Visuals/Engine: 8/10 (beautiful but not amazing/console port)
Combat: 3/10 (horrendously generic and unenjoyable)
