Decent game with good mechanics and a really deep story, too bad it sucks at telling it. In a game where there are a lot of cutscenes and dialogue you expect to understand some of the story without reading or listening to every recording. At the end of the game you'll probably look up the wiki page to understand the story like I did.

In other areas I was dissapointed at the game. It was severely lacking a good horror element that made the first game so engaging, and a lot of the good gameplay/rpg elements are just missing, making it feel much more like an on rails shooter like a Call of Duty campaign mode than a game with depth and choice. Essentially, it felt less realistic and more scripted because of this. Talking of script, the story of this game was all over the place. It was incredibly convoluted and tacky, and dealt in the topic of multiple realities but in an incredibly cliche's and pseudointellectual way that had me rolling my eyes by the end. Unlike the original bioshock, with its strange self aware commentary on the work of ayn rand, this game takes place in the skies in a turn of the century version of religious zealotry and old american ideals of purity and independance, which is a really cool idea on the face of it. It doesnt just stick to this concept though, that is the problem. The game starts out great, and you are lead to believe that there are many avenues that will be explored in this. It feels like bioshock, with a creepy sense of unease and insanity crawling at the back of your mind as you ascend to a racists idea of heaven. But the game just lets you down, its cartoonish and unserious, i get that they were kind of going for that with elizabeth appearing like a good old american disney princess, but it just doesnt land. And the story is stupid, and story is the second most important thing in Bioshock after the art design, so its a 7 from me (the other 3 is the good story its missing) Expand

Bioshock Infinite is more of an action shooter than anything else which was disappointing to say the least. I don't find it as interesting or enjoyable as the first Bioshock but the concept behind it was interesting enough to get me through most of the game. Very messy, holy hell. The writing can be all over the place, but it´s not bad, and the ending is really good. The main characters have a great relatioship, which is quite an achievement considering the protagonist is goofily tragic. It´s very fun despite it´s faults.

Frankly, most of the elements that were unique to BioShock have been utterly stripped from this title. There's still plasmids (Vigors) and a steampunk setting but that is where the similarities cease. The hacking elements are gone, lockpicking is taken away from the player and given to an AI, the research camera is removed, and paying attention to health has been replaced with the all-too-generic "regenerating health" mechanic. BioShock's "Big Daddies" are replaced with "Handymen" who are seen far too infrequently, and "Motorized Patriots" which are overused. The vast majority of the enemy AI are merely footsolders who are easy to defeat (and completely stupid) even on the hardest setting. The shooting mechanics have never been particularly strong in the BioShock franchise but BioShock Infinite strips it down further, allowing players to carry only two weapons at any given time like any other stock FPS title. In addition, the vigor powers themselves are lackluster and chances are you'll go through the entire game running with Possession (the hacking "replacement") and Bucking Bronco or Murder of Crows (the two Vigors which have the most effect on enemy mobs loss of control and stun+damage, respectively). We get Vigor powers like "Shock Jockey" (the name should tell you what it does) and the game points out how we can use it to power up devices but then we only get one particular device to use it on and little reason to use it again. So this leaves us with the story which seems to be getting the most praise. However, the story itself is a series of walking cliches and tropes about multiverse theory and time-space manipulation and, frankly, has been addressed better elsewhere in countless science fiction novels, movies, TV shows, and even comic books. When the game explains the concepts of "constants and variables" in the multiverse it feels more like they're attempting to justify why the game took such a hard 90 degree turn away from previous gameplay demos in order to proffer this metaphysical theme. Where, for example, is the Elizabeth AI we were shown where she fought along side of us? Gone and replaced with a cowering AI that gets in the way and offers little help but tossing us items from time to time. Where, for example, were the critical moments in the game shown during gameplay demos of E3's past? Gone and replaced with overly cerebral tropes about quantum mechanics and multiple realities. Where, for example, are all the examples of how the sky-rail plays a critical role in the game? Just gone, entirely. Don't get me wrong, the story is heads and shoulders better than MOST games these days and the attention to detail is second to none. For those reasons alone the game should be experienced at least once. It's just the story isn't nearly as new OR earth shattering as many claim it to be and, if I didn't care about spoilers, I could point out how Infinite almost perfectly parallels the story of Walter and Peter Bishop from the TV show Fringe. While the story is better than most it really doesn't make the shortcomings of the gameplay easier to bear. Finally, for a game which was designed exclusively for single player, the game is very short, clocking in at a total of 14 hours on the hard difficulty setting with most of the collectibles obtained. Given the fact that many elements were chopped out of the gameplay videos, I can't help but wonder how much is sitting on the cutting room floor, or if key parts were stripped in order to push out fast DLC. There's no reason this game shouldn't have been AT LEAST 20 hours in length, especially given how linear it is designed. All in all, it's a decent game but painfully average in terms of gameplay and only barely above average in terms of story. Levine spent so much time on the metaphysical that it feels like he and the development team forgot that it was all of the elements, combined, that made BioShock so distinct and enjoyable. It's worth playing at least once to soak in all the wonder but, sadly, you won't really be going back to play it again since nothing (except difficulty) changes between play throughs. Expand

Bioshock Infinite is a shooter with extremely light RPG influences, and even as a shooter, it's only an OK one. Playing B:I, I myself looking forward to the dialogue between the main characters--which thankfully there is plenty off--but nearly falling asleep during gameplay segments, looking forward to them being over so I can get to the next scene. Also, the UI looks nice, but it's terrible from a usability perspective, especially on the PC. The gear system, for example, is pitifully designed.

All in all, it's a well-polished game. I love that it's focused on single player only with no frills. I love the game's themes and design. But the gameplay is so shallow, the AI is weak, and I'm left with little desire to play the game again.

A mostly fun game, but not one I feel the need to replay since it was very generic most of the time. It's very much a tunnel shooter. This game had a LOT of hype, but was not as good as the original, nor anything that special gameplay or technically wise. Though the story was good.

It is certainly not a masterpiece of storytelling, or even particularly interesting in its apparent critical treatment on American exceptionalism. The pseudo-Americans seem quite impressive and exceptional with their flying city, even if their social beliefs seem beyond the pale. However, the "Columbians" don't even seem to hold beliefs that are terribly out of pace for the day. Eugenics, racism, and a puritanical protestant faith emphasizing civic life were part of modern life in early twentieth/late 19th century America. If anything the game only exaggerates the actual belief systems held by most people in those days. The populist faction is also portrayed just as exaggerated, and are shown to be bloodthirsty maniacs who just want to steal everyone's property as the game unfolds.

The game has more plot holes than Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. The ending seems to be a play at some deep, philosophical point, but winds up imploding under its own absurdity. When you beat the game (12 hour finish on hard for me, and I will probably not be playing through 1999 difficulty, unlocked after HM completion), you will likely come to the conclusion that the game would have been better without the ending. A simple fade-to-black after the final battle would have been more satisfying. Instead the player endures a painful revelation sequence where all questions about what is going on are answered, and simultaneously rendered moot.

If I had payed the sticker-price for this game (I picked it up on a Steam sale), I would have been very disappointed. It was worth 10 USD.

As a FPS it is fine. As the inheritor of BioShock it does not live up to BioShock 1 or even 2. Several interesting features are left out which were enjoyable and well-tuned in the previous games. There is no map; making completion difficult. Money is tight in the game, but this is intentional and forces the player to prioritize upgrades. Ammo was always a problem on hard, and there was never quite enough cash to buy anything, so pluses for that.

The primary failures of this game are in the narrative, which might seem nitpicky, but for a single-player FPS, the story is all we really have to hold the thing together. Without a tight, compelling narrative there is really no reason to play the game to my mind. There were several instances in the game where the main character develops a case of macguffinitis, and can't see that it is actually absurd that he continues toward the next objective given what is going on. If anything the highly-trained Pinkerton agent would have been intelligent enough to figure out there were better ways to go about his objective. At least in BioShock there was a concrete in-game reason for the mindless objective chasing, and the second part followed naturally. Infinite has no such coherence on the plot level.

This game is really a 6, maybe a 7.5 if the reviewer was feeling generous. I cannot understand how this game gets such fawning institutional reviews. It is a mixed bag at best.

If you're a BioShock fan, you will (somewhat) enjoy this game. Wait for a sale.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well i can't deny that the story from beginning to end was quite intriguing and nearly brilliant. i use the term brilliant as it caused quite some confusion halfway trough when the first inter-dimensional travel happened. It felt...Forced. First you are in the relatively normal world and suddenly your in the dimension where the Rebellion was already full underway. if the transition was less sudden it would have helped, but alas. There were also the loose ends here and there.
    ..
Game-play wise. it was poor. The details were great but the game-play felt simplified. the world lacked the depth and freedom of the former Bioshock games. The enemies where rather bland (they were fodder. 1 shot to the head with a pistol and done most of the time!) and the few "special" enemies were spread out thin. you encounter the Handy-men a few times trough out the game (they were miniature bosses) and the Boys of silence you encounter in only one level and have no single importance. The Vigor system (tough nicely thought up) wasn't needed most the time and i still have yet to hear where they came from unlike their plasmid counterpart that was properly explained.
    ..
Its a good game, but in the end im afraid the over focus on the story has left the game-play slightly lacking. I did like the Luteces tough. added a little bit of silliness here and there which was surely needed.

Alright all you fanboys and Inception worshipers I'm about to school you hard in why this game is completely 100% basically ok and nothing more. I think I'll rip on the combat first.

In Bioshock 1 you could carry all your guns at once. Ammo would still be tough to come by for certain guns, but that was ok because you could carry your gun until you found or bought ammo for it. This is why it made sense to upgrade weapons you weren't currently using. The upgrade system in B1 made sense because you always had access to the guns you upgraded. The upgrade system in this game is completely stupid because of the 2 weapon limit. I want to use the guns I spent money on upgrading, not be forced to discard them because I can't find ammo. The game also has several variations of the same gun for some reason. Why are there 3 different machine guns when clearly the original machine gun is the best one? These only serve to water down the chances of finding a the machine gun variant I upgraded. This still would have been ok if it were possible to upgrade all weapons in the game to full by about the 1/2 way mark, but you only have enough cash to upgrade a few guns by end game. If you hit a stretch in the game where you can't use your upgraded guns, too bad sucker! You wasted money, and you have to use sh*t tier weapons now.
Despite this combat has a good feel to it... until you rescue Elizabeth. Don't get me wrong, she is the ideal escort mission, but right then is when the game starts to go from swashbuckling adventure fun to typcial brown/grey modern shooter. There's even health regen. Imagine that.

Right when you go to the poor district of the city is when the game finally says "screw it, I'm a modern shooter, sort of" and goes complete corridor shooter. You still have magic, but it's not as well developed as I expected it to be from Bioshock 1. B1 had obvious issues with plasmids but I expected them to be rectified, not worsened. You never see the sun for the rest of the game btw. Everything is brown/grey, and color schemes like this for several hours really kills the mood of any game.

Time for the story. It feels like all the writers were in the middle of writing a story set in a world about Nazi Germany (Everyone is basically Nazis. Hell, they're even all blonde and blue eyed) mixed with the French Revolution when some nutter ran in saying "Hey everyone guess what! I just discovered this great game called Half Life 2! LETS RIP IT OFF!". And so they did. They even have the Gman, except there's two of them, and they're British.
The game sets up a compelling and organic world about revolution, racism, and showing the folly of violent uprisings. Or at least, it sets itself up to tell this story really nicely. Before it can get to that part, it decides to interject alternate reality scifi nonsense that obviously tries too hard to be deep. The worst part is though, is that the game expects me to be surprised at its plot twists. Imagine watching a gamer who says he's the best in the world, but then you watch him turn on god mode. That is what alternate realities are to stories; They are the story teller's equivalent of god mode. They declared open season on their own story and said to their audience "I can do anything now!". Because of this, I was able to predict every single plot twist. I knew that because the game devs activated god mode, they would try to pull the weirdest sh*t they could get away with, which was anything. None of it surprised me. It was as if a magician gave me the schematic to a trick, then expected me to be surprised even though he gave me the tools to predict the ending.

Speaking of the ending, it totally sucks. It's some completely forced surreal ending ala Mass Effect 3 or Inception. It makes no sense, but it has to make no sense, because the game set itself up early on to have the ending make no sense. For lack of a better phrase, during the last 30 min of the game, the story goes up its own ass.

On a side note, something I find really hilarious though is that all the reviewers who say that this story wrapped itself up in a nice neat bow, also called Halo's storyline convoluted.

This isn't bringing into question the complete lack of relation to B1. There is one part where they make a nod to Rapture, but Andrew Ryan isn't here. I expected Ryan to interject to want you to kill Comstock because he's totally screwing up Columbia, but that didn't happen. I expected Elizabeth to relate to the Jewish doctor from B1, but that didn't happen. There are no ties to Bioshock 1, other than a glimpse of Rapture, but that's it. That scene basically served as a reminder to say "Remember, this is Bioshock". None of the B1 characters were even involved at all.

Here's what I recommend: The ME3 remedy. Play the game until it starts to get really weird. Then stop and pretend that it ended in a sensible, satisfying way that makes sense for you and coincides with the world setup.

The Vigors seem a little unbalanced and you are likely to only focus on a few.

    NO HACKING! None.

The Gear you find, which doubles as your customizable character traits,  is completely randomized. If you reload a checkpoint, the item changes. (This could be good or bad really.)

    The Good:

The Art design is fantastic! Most areas have something new to look at and explore and even the disturbing areas can be visually appealing. It feels like the art took up most of the games budget and it shows. Very memorable visuals around almost every corner, some are subtle, so stop and take it in!

Combat, especially when leaping on and off the rails into melee, is often quite a lot of fun. You'll almost never run out of ammo or Salts once you join up with Elizabeth.

They did very good research on the era they are portraying. From the dialect to the billboard adds, it really feels like you’re in the early 1900s. (Minus the floating city aspect. lol.)

    Bottom-line:

A deeply flawed and over hyped game that really did try to tell a good story, but ends up a frustrating and empty mess of a plot with great visuals and decent game play.

She is not without faults though, including an obsession with coins and the ability to go invincible whenever there is combat. Elizabeth babysits the player, rather than the other way around, as she throws you ammo and health when the game decides you could use a hand out.

The core of the game is shooting and action. You’ll be unleashing Vigors (Plasmids) left and right. Sky-lines are decent fun to zip around on, but are not used in enough encounters. It’s actually quite a linear shooter against pretty bland enemies. Larger levels take away a lot of intimate qualities of the series. I really miss the Splicers from the first two BioShock games.

Handymen are basically scripted mini bosses, they show up when the game designer decides they should. They appear about 4 times and aren’t interwoven into the game like Big Daddies. You certainly don’t get the opportunity to pick when to engage. Elizabeth yells “Handyman” and the game is on. The Songbird is barely worth a mention. It basically only appears in cut scenes and cannot hurt the player.

Disappointingly, for a BioShock game, there are no significant changes to the world based on moral choices. The world shuffles you down a narrow path with side rooms and dull voxaphones. I rarely felt compelled to explore the world of Columbia but there are some decent audio logs near the end. The save system is incredibly disappointing. Checkpoint saves are bad!

The game loses focus during the middle. It’s clear they intended for these bits to be a demonstration of what they try to explain at the end. However, I lost all care for the world of Columbia after some annoying backtracking. I wasn’t invested in the world and could have done without the Call of Duty scenes. The game would have achieved something greater if it stuck to a more grounded Columbia shown in the intro.

If devs are going to continue to release such shoddy products i am amazed it can get such a high review score.

Meh. Overrated on mere graphics alone. Yes, yes, yes. We know the "critics" believe it's a "masterpiece", but the vigor's are pointless, the weapon combat is repetitive, and the incessant searching to purchase upgrades is nonsense.

The game has probably the best environment I've ever seen in a game and its' pretty much the sole reason the game gets a 6. The atmosphere is top notch and you literally can't help but not be awed by the sight of Columbia. The bad, well it has this great atmosphere in a floating city but for most of the game you're exploring confined spaces. In all 8 hours I played in only a ten second span, did I feel like I was in a floating city. This was when the PC had to traverse a ledge to get to another point in the area. Another problem, the game uses checkpoints to save your game. The game prizes itself on exploration to flesh out the world through audio and visual diaries, such as Bioshock 1 and 2 yet at times I noted myself having thirty minutes between saves due to me exploring. I found myself rushing exploring just because I had to go to work or school. Another problem, there's not much variation in enemies or is there much of a challenge. The most challenging enemy called a, "Handyman," is only encountered around six or seven times and its' the only time you'll ever encounter a challenge. The gameplay is distinctly average, which is a shame. The game shares problem with third person shooters, in that it they telegraph where fighting will occur. The vigors also feel like direct rip offs from Bioshock 1 & 2 yet are harder to aim. The games story is decent, but the foreshadowing is literally jammed down your throat. and not only that but its' confusing as hell towards the end and makes no sense. I paid $7.50 for the game and it took ~8 hours. Overall the game's decent but don't expect the second coming of first person shooters. Expand

Looking out in the distance and looking at the view and the world that they created was awesome. One thing to expect is repetitive gameplay. You will find all the missions to be the same. You will be running from map to map running and gunning. There were no unique quests. Even after finishing I felt as if it was extremely liner and have no desire to return to this game. The only thing this game has for it was its super awesome voice acting and its stunning visuals. The skyline added a very unique system but it was a bit disappointing. All in all I gotta rate this game a 6.5/10. Due to the weird plot twists, uninteresting enemies, repetitive gameplay. If this game would improve its maps. Making everything more like its original. This game would easily make my top of the list. It all came down to its average gameplay and linear story. The game was incredibly easy. A disappointing game, although that is somewhat expected. I've come to expect the content and gameplay concepts of pre-release gameplay demos and trailers to not be present in the game.

To start off, the story is above average. The storytelling is below average. The concepts behind the story are intriguing, and also link back to the previous games. The depth of the story through the game's backstory, which is often shown through audio logs, or "voxophones", lets you piece together the story, and helps with the eventual "epiphany" at the end of the game, as if the game was some sort of mystery/corridor shooter where you get thrown information, and while you are trying to figure this out, the game continues to tease you with the fact that there is going to be some sort of twist at a later part of the story. However, the fact is that you cannot figure it out until the twist, and the fact that you expect the twist for the majority of the game. Unlike the previous games and also many other works of fiction, the content of the twist itself may be a complete surprise, but the existence of the twist is completely expected, so instead of truly being surprised by the twist because it's so unexpected that you had never even thought of there being a twist, or that the twist was what it was, you simply think "Oh, so that's the twist.". Other works of fiction have genuinely surprising twists in both aspects of a twist that I have mentioned, for example in the first Bioshock. The twist(s) in that game come as a complete surprise, and are much more well done.

In terms of the story through characters, the characters themselves have a decent degree of depth to them, but every character in the game simply seems flat and uninteresting. Even Elizabeth, a companion that you spend time with throughout much of the game, seems completely uninteresting. I found that I barely gave a damn about her until the closing parts of the game. There simply is not enough character development and interaction. Elizabeth speaks occasionally throughout the entire game, and the conversations between Elizabeth and Booker are simply short and meaningless. Their attitudes towards each other seem quite static at times, and even when they seem to suddenly change, they immediately change back and you are left asking yourself "What the hell was all that about?". This is essentially the same with all major characters as well, they are simply 2D characters that do the things they do simply because, and they stay the same way. Elizabeth essentially felt like some sort of AI pet who just follows me around and serves as an extension of my will. If Booker was given the power of opening tears, picking locks, and randomly finding ammunition, health, and salts in the middle of nowhere and Elizabeth simply followed me around, it would have been the exact same experience. With literally every single other character in the game, whether it be a major character or not, there simply is not actual interaction except for a few lines of scripted events and dialogue here and there. Whatever miniscule amount of interaction you have with those characters seems to have no repercussions, and whatever it is that you do, you'll simply not give a damn and forget about it. The E3 gameplay demo for Bioshock Infinite had more character development that the actual game (excluding the ending and twist).

Now the gameplay is nothing shabby, but it really isn't anything amazing either. Based off of the early E3 gameplay demos and gameplay details, the gameplay had such great potential. However, the actual result was essentially the opposite of what was shown and expected. Levels were "massive", but closed and segregated. A level was essentially divided into tiny little section. You can only ever choose to be extremely aggressive and militant, as hostile attention will always be drawn to you no matter what you do. The skylines are mostly pointless decoration that is limited to what is essentially a total area of 20 meters cubed that you can completely play without other than a few parts of the game where you simply must use them to reach point B from point A. Most of them also do not make any sense in an actual logical manner, as if they were placed there just so Booker can swing around and fight on them if he wants, and not because the city planners thought it would be of actual use, which it seemed to have been in the early parts of the game. Miniscule gameplay elements like the gate-lifting, stealing, powering machines with the shock jockey, and so on are introduced in the beginning and then completely forgotten, never to be seen again. And the only vigor that enemies use are the Devil's Kiss by the firemen and the shock jockey by a single mid-game boss. Oh, and vigors are useless.

I could go on, but the character limit won't let me. However, I definitely believe that Bioshock infinite is simply a highly overrated game that is just disappointingly mediocre.

The movie clips you find throughout Columbia are just lackluster and pointless. It tries to add to the story, but it's just a lazy addition that most people just end up skipping.

People are going to argue that the story is so amazing that it compensates for the lack of content, but it's a video game... not a book. Of course you have to take into a count the contents. Honestly this game seems much more simplified compared to the other Bioshock games. And of course like most game developers today they are going to charge people for extra content in DLCs instead of putting it in the base game. I would have gave this game a 8, but people are over rating it way too much.

Not bad. Decent graphics, good voice acting, boring but solid FPS combat. Worth it for the eye candy perhaps, but I won't be playing it again.

This could have been something special: setting is very impressive and stylish with lots of attention to detail, and the developers were obviously trying to say something intelligent. Instead - the usual move forwards and kill, repeat, repeat.

Instead - the usual move forwards and kill, repeat, repeat. Why? Because a guy who I hear speaking sometimes is evil.

There's more to it than that, but if you want to find out what happens at the end you need to rack up an enormous bodycount first. The other Bioshocks and System Shock had puzzles and exploring; Infinite is just about shooting everything and then finding the exit to the next area.

Cool characters that might become Booker's allies manage to find bizarre ways of becoming his enemy so they can be added to the death toll. The sheer amount of meaningless killing (Booker pulls the trigger and Elizabeth throws him more ammo) makes situations like Booker stopping to tell Elizabeth that stealing from a tomb is wrong ("Think about what you're doing!"), unintentionally hilarious.

The moral of the story? Gunning down hundreds of people is fine as long as they are evil, but racism is very very very bad.

-The gameplay mechanics were very similar to bioshock 1 and 2, which made it easy to get in to

    Cons:
-The game was relatively short, with almost 0 replayability. While the game gives you some decisions, none of them feel like they mean anything at all.

-The story did not really flow. While the main plot was interesting, the sideplots and people you meet just felt like filler to point you to the next area full of bad guys.

And since I was spoiled about the end by the THOUSANDS of spoilers around the internet, it just got me more interested in the story. So I decided to give it another try. Got up to the part where Elizabeth kills Daisy Fitzroy. Story is average till now. I REALLY want to know the whole story, but I'd rather watch a 'Bioshock Infinite The Movie' then grind through the God-awful gameplay. Skylines are an attempt to try and give you a break from the awful combat. The re-named Vigors are just plain ol' copies of powers from various games, including Bioshock 1,2 and Dishonored. The setting was great and very original, at least to my knowledge. But the story is its most worth feature and is what makes the game shine to most people.

Taking a look at the characters made me frown a little bit, seeing as Elizabeth is the only redeeming character in the entire game. Most of the others had very bland dialogue and boring backgrounds that had no influence to the plot what-so-ever. The only thing that made some of the characters stories interesting were there relations with Elizabeth.

Some of the poorly done things in Bioshock Infinite include the game play above anything else. While I enjoyed the game I felt bored from time to time. The vigors were a good attempt at keeping things interesting but I felt little use for them. There are too few enemies in this game, and the special enemies only make rare appearances. The majority of enemy encounters in this game include armed men carrying Rifle's and Shotguns, making nearly every fighting sequence a long distance 'duck and cover' battle. For its time, the gameplay is very stale and needs some serious improvement.

All in all I enjoyed the game for its practical elements like the story. It just lacked in so many other things and I feel if these things could be improved upon, Bioshock Infinite would be a much better game.

If I had to give this game a number rating, it would be a 7.5. This is not a bad game by any means, but I don't have fully positive things to say about it. Starting with the presentation, this game is nothing short of breathtaking at times. Many small models are very low poly, however the textures and colors do more than enough to make up for that minor complaint. At times I did however encounter draw distance problems when playing on all ultra settings which broke the immersion, but they were more prominently noticeable in the beginning of the game because there was no combat. This game created a new aesthetic very different than Bioshock 1 & 2 with a colorful and vibrant world that exceeds many unreal engine titles. It works very well with the tone of the game, but it would have been nice to see some more improvements for the PC version in the graphics department. The gameplay is where I start to have mixed feelings. This is not a challenging games in the sense that dying has any impact on you, as it just makes you run through an area again. The challenge lies more in how you choose to play. When it comes to the actual combat, it is hard to describe. Many weapons feel satisfying to use, however there are times when cheesing your way through an area seems to be more efficient than exploiting all resources at your disposal. I played on medium for a quarter of the game and then switched to hard which did not seem to solve this problem at all. When comparing the way I played prior Bioshock games with the combat in Infinite, I used almost all the plasmids to their full effect, and not just for their designated area. But in Infinite, I barely had any need to use any vigors other than possession. I believe this can be boiled down to the fact that you may only have 2 active vigors at a time which require you to pause the game and open a radial menu which stops the flow of combat and ultimately does not translate well into a PC game, rather than having them all available using F1 and so on in Bioshock 1. That was also a clunky system, but it did not slow down the game. The lack of saves and quick saves can also be a fairly major problem. At many times, I skipped a tip screen which was telling me something important because I was using the F key to loot containers. There is no delay between showing the tip and then continuing the game. This then requires you to restart at last checkpoint if you want to read it again (The game menu that can be opened with O is not helpful for displaying any information and is largely pointless) and the checkpoint can be in excess of 10 minutes or more back, and it does not save any of the items you collected up to that point. The amount of backtracking that is required is also poorly implemented. If you want to find new gear or stat upgrades, you must backtrack very far, sometimes 3-4 areas back. Since there is no map, and the only way you know where you're going is by using the navigation display by pressing N (which is only for finding the next objective) it can be harrowing trying to find these special locations again. I ended up just skipping many of them because they were not a deciding factor in anything that happened. More gameplay problems exist later on such as a lack of enemy variety and encounters and it usually becomes the same formula each time. Overall, I believe the earlier Bioshock games tackled combat encounters in a better way, however the way combat "felt" in Infinite was better. The story is another area that I did not feel very positive about. Without spoiling anything, the beginning is slow but interesting to the point where you want to get more of an understanding about Elizabeth, while the middle is EXTREMELY flat and lack luster and does not satisfy any earlier curiosities. The ending is where the game really shines, but it feels like everything that you were expecting to see in the middle of the game is at the end. While the ending was well thought out, it did not make up for the entire middle portion of the game which was nearly 60 to 70% of the content. I felt extremely bored during many missions in the middle and just wanted to learn more about the power Elizabeth wields. Instead, you're left with a pretty boring attempt at trying to create emotion between other characters, but none of them are memorable other than Elizabeth. There is obviously more to be said to fully explain my feelings about this game, but they require much more information and knowledge with prior games to get the point across. This is definitely a game that will be looked back at positively, but the fact that is being coined as an "unforgettable experience" is a vast overstatement. Good? Yes. Problems? Yes. A truly unique and inspiring game? Not so much. Expand

Ultimately all the vigors were pretty wasted on me because i didn't need them and that sums up a lot of the combat. I didn't really need to think just empty the machine gun into anything that moved.

Pet quibbles Using frames seemed like a deus ex machina effort. And how come people just carried these huge boxes that they left around when they died and why did the sniper have loads of machine gun and pistol ammo on him.....

...That is completely ruined by actually PLAYING the game. Having gameplay that hasn't improved much since the days of System Shock 2 is simply not acceptable nearly 15 years later. The combat is boring, clumsy and mind numbingly easy. This lack of responsiveness and the horrific violence in the game makes it more seem one step up from a quicktime event style execution game. It also feels more like filler in an already brief game. It is inferior to the previous two Bioshock in the manner of it being a game.

If the game wasn't so stellar in every other way, it wouldn't be much higher than a 4 and you'd be better served catching the highlights on youtube.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. From all the hype since the sneak-peek at this game in 2010, I was really expecting a masterpiece. Instead, we are presented with a game that seems to get less fun the more you play it and in all honestly, I eventually found myself playing the game as much as possible, just to get it over and done with. The graphics are fantastic, the city architecture is outstanding, but Bioshock Infinite's shortfalls are quite unappealing. Firstly, the patriot/religious theme goes from interesting to overused within the first 2 hours of the game. Secondly, the railing system is underused. You can only rail at designated locations which adds to the already extremely linear plot and does not even allow you to explore the wonderful city as freely as what you would like. This means that all the effort into the landscape and buildings is just backdrop instead of allowing it to be a reality that you can move around however you like. Thirdly, the plot of the story starts off a little shaky, but by the end of the game I had no idea what the hell was going on, and due to the ridiculous story-line and constant change in Elizabeth's behaviour, I couldn't have cared less. You would also expect your game-long sidekick to be of some use, but she never once assists with enemies at all. She has got to be the most useless side-kick of any game, only offering you extra supplies at random intervals which you need to actually take a break from shooting, look towards her, catch the supplies and then carry on. While enemies are allowed to continue taking free hits. Finishing the game gives more relief than awe. The enemies AI, although not terrible, isn't great either. The game is completely linear apart from 'optional quests' which allow you to find codes that decrypt certain messages written on walls to allow you into a secret room. The weapons are boring and not too many. The magic powers, although fun at the start, become useless later on in the game and only 3 are actually effective later on. You can collect lockpicks to unlock secret areas, however later on in the game, there are so few secret areas that you will probably finish the game with 20+ lockpicks. Did I saw wtf is up with the ending?? I really expected more from this game. Or in this sense, less. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Overall, the first part was fun and visually stunning but got more and more disappointing as it went on. The graphics and visuals were great but they made the game waaay too easy. Being set back a few feet away is not much of a punishment and if you can't really die then wheres the thrill? On top of that, what happened with the songbird?? We only saw it a few times, never got to see it or ride it. (and "controlling" it for that brief fight towards the end totally doesn't count, that was a tease) and nothing crazy happened when the songbird DID show up that we hadn't already seen in the trailers. You just can't have a Bioshock game without Rapture or the Big Daddys and Little Sisters. A steam-punk theme FPS with powers aren't the staples to the franchise, The City and the Big Daddys are. Bioshock Infinite is a stupid game disguised as a intelligent game, because when gives the control to the player, it treats the player like a dumb person that dont need to worry with anything beyond shoot the enemies. The scenarios are linear, the game have no puzzles, and you have even a button that draws an arrow on your feet pointing to the right direction for you to follow (as if it was necessary, the game is linear!).

Elizabeth is nothing special too, is just a character with fixed interactions with the scenarios, that help you in combat just like Elika in Prince of Persia (2008) and Alex Vance in Half-Life 2, but is not better than anyone of them.

My 6 score is because the art of the game is great, and combat is cool too, but nothing so special.

BioShock Infinite looks nice, and that's about it... its is extremely over-hyped and no where close to earning a 10/10 rating. This game is a 7/10 at best and here's why.

First off lets start with the obvious false advertising, you may have seen the awesome looking TV commercial and thought to yourself, hey this game looks cool... well too bad that the TV commercial
BioShock Infinite looks nice, and that's about it... its is extremely over-hyped and no where close to earning a 10/10 rating. This game is a 7/10 at best and here's why.

First off lets start with the obvious false advertising, you may have seen the awesome looking TV commercial and thought to yourself, hey this game looks cool... well too bad that the TV commercial http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fbRUTSeafcc is of content that is not found anywhere in the actual game.

Secondly there is a 2 weapon carry limit, this normally wouldn't be a problem but the ammo clip sizes are extremely small even when fully upgraded. To offset this the developers decided to put ammo-vending machines every 10 feet in the game levels so you never have to go far or out of your way... kinda lame.

Thirdly is almost all of the vigor's found in the game are copy and paste versions of each other with the exception of two of them. There is little need to switch between any more than 2 vigor's for the entire course of the game since they virtually and literally all do the exact same thing and have the exact same secondary function.

Fourthly there are literally no side quests and or puzzles in this game. There will be a few instances where you find a key and need to back track 3/4 of a level to unlock a treasure chest, but that is pretty much the extent of your side questing in BioShock Infinite. There are also a few doors to hidden loot that wont open with out you hitting an object with the assigned vigor power. The lack of puzzle solving and side quests makes this experience feel very underwhelming.

Fifthly there are no major boss fights in this game, none, zero... some people will argue that you do infact participate in one boss battle mid way through the game, but I digress. At no point in this game are you faced with an "OMG I have to fight that?" moment.

Sixth is the fact that there is no multiplayer or co-op aspect to this game at all. There isn't even a section in the main menu for solo play skill challenges or time attack type modes, all you get is a story mode, that's it no other bells or whistles.

The average gamer will spend anywhere from 9-12 hours on normal setting. While the game may look fantastic, it is a very short ride with not a lot of replay value. The lack of any puzzles, side quests, boss battles, exploration, etc. makes this game feel very hollow and empty.

I cannot justify giving this game a 10/10, this is the current flavour of the month as far as gaming goes, BioShock Infinite does not break any new ground as far as FPS games go, it just looks nice. If vanity is all you care about then yes I guess you could look past all the other glaring issues with this game and blindly give it a 10/10.

There are many repetitive gauntlet type areas that you will no doubt be expecting to have to go through twice, once on the way and once on the way back, easily identified from the start of each zone. The story leaves much to be desired, such as an explanation of how vigors even fit into the world (unlike BS1 which explained plasmids) or even how this girl got these rift powers. ADVICE** Play the game, but wait for it to go on sale**** This game relies 100% on creating the illusion of a great game by employing smoke and mirrors hiding a bland game behind graphics and a killer ending. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I could write a review on 2 pages, but I'm going to try to keep it short.

    Visuals, art style, music:
As we all know, amazing. I don't need to praise that any more.

    Story:
People don't seem to like the ending, but I do. It's something else, unusual for games and it's very interesting how everything plays out. I didn't see it coming again, and I think it's great. Otherwise the characterization is great, we start to like both Booker and Elizabeth, both have their ups and downs. And here's the most important thing about the story it's told like it should be in-games. Not with cutscenes, but with either scripted, but still interactive sequences or by looking through the environment, exploring, and of course talking with eachother. I hope more games follow this thing that Half Life started 15 years ago and almost completely ditch the cutscenes.

    Gameplay and pacing:
Here's where the game is not as shining but that doesn't mean it sucks in this department. The pacing starts out great with you exploring, but then out of nowhere it throws you into a massive fight. Gunplay on general is again not as polished as I would've wished and this bugs me. The game design is also a bit broken with the whole vigor thing seems like they only included it to be as Bioshock 1 or to have more options, while you don't really have to use them. They should have introduced some kind of enemies that are a bit more challenging and where you actually have to use that which leads me to the special types of enemies. First one is the automated patriot, and it's a pretty easy enemy. Nothing to get upset about, it's just an almost still target that is almost a no-threat to you. The second one is handyman, who is a bullet sponge and overpowered, so it's not really fun to fight against him (you only fight him what, 5 times anyway). The last one is the siren, but he's rare as well and he just send an army of "zombies" at you. Nothing great like Big Daddies from the first one, sadly.
Then there is the constant fetch quest mechanics that makes me think I didn't do anything special in the game. You go to some place, and you have to find someone on the other side of the town, then he lost something and you need to go back to get that, then you need to find and open three tears, etc... It just doesn't feel like you're on adventure but instead feels mundane and boring.
This kinda redeems itself towards the end with huge fights where you use the skyline, Elizabeth's powers and more, where you have to jump around like crazy around the skylines onto the cepelin and then back onto the skyline. It's fun and I wish they included more sequences like that, much much better than just shooting waves of soldiers in a hallway. I'm also disappointed that there were no real bosses and that you don't fight Songbird.

So is it a good game? Yes. Is it as good as everyone is praising it to be? Nah. It's a very good, much better than most FPS games coming out (maybe because they're all stupid modern military shooters with no imagination?), and it's definitely worth a purchase.

-The social themes like racism, unionism, and religion seem tacked on and never explored sufficiently. They seem to be there to invoke controversy and nothing else.
-Vigors seem weak and unimaginative. Some of them are introduced late in the game so there is little use for them. I recall never having to depend on them except for when i ran out of ammo.
-NPC's found during the game are useless and non-interactive.
-Horribly designed boss fights with continually respawning minions. The same boss fight is repeated 3 times.
-Story was a let down and simply pulled a rug over you at the end.

Overall, i never found the bioshock series to be amazing games, but i enjoyed the stories and the more slow paced and cerebral gameplay of the previous installments. Bioshock Infinite's presentation and carefully crafted world is really breathtaking, but take away that and you're left with little else but an average shooter with a disappointing ending.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Visual and display is stunning. The background is very interesting and creative that I give 10/10 for those. But in many way, it disappoints me a lot.
The choices in the game, which appeared a lot in the gameplay trailer, are hardly found and doesn't have effect at all.The title enemy, songbird, has no presence that It rarely come out. Also, fighting with (probably spoiler) mother ghost and trumpet enemy makes no sense. Not to mention that the game didn't much talk about the 10/10 background setting. The conflict between anarchist and patriot were limited and only thing that player can do is 'spectating'
The game developer also appeared a lot about Elizabeth but the only thing I remember about her was punching my face and scavenging like beggar. Where's the Elizabeth in the gamplay trailer? The ending was surprising truthfully but makes no connection with Colombia and all that fighting I had done. It's like mixture of Taken, Inception, and Stein;Gate.

It is also very odd that the Prophet is trying to stop you escaping with Elizabeth but he only sends half a dozen goons at a time to stop you. "What, those 6 goons didn't kill you? Well, just wait till you get to the next zone where there will be another 6 goons waiting".
The game really lacks the horror and terror I got from Bioshock 2. The first time you encounter a big sister or big daddy in Bioschock scares the crap out of you. I haven't had the same feeling with Infinite yet.
Bottom line: I just don't find Infinite fun. Usually when I get a new game I play for hours on end until my back starts spasming. With Infinite I play for maybe 30 minutes at a time, at least until I get to the next checkpoint (why can't I save the game when I want, and why can't I save multiple games? Crazy).

There are vigor upgrades you can only ever get using dlc, they're in the game you just can't get the requisite resources any other way.

I found myself looking off in the distance several times in aww of how they came up with this gorgeous landscape. The games graphics are no doubt a step above the other Bioshock games and the story seems to follow with its complexity, trying to connect several different parallel universes with the one your in. Although this all seems good and dandy the game is not what people are hyping it all up to be.
My biggest problems with the game is how mediocre the gameplay is. It's basically the same as the other bioshock games but with the addition of Elizabeth's powers that can open tears to other universes popping out useful objects/items to use in the environment and the hook that allows you to ride on rails. These additions can be fun but their nothing to get excited about, you basically never need to use them except for a few key spots towards the end of the game. the game was so easy I played the whole way threw on hard and the AI was very bland and predictable. I loved in the previous bioshock game that you could upgrade bullets for the gun making them shock or explode on impact and when you upgraded the gun the look would change a little based on what you upgraded on it. Infinite completely took this quality out including replacing hacking with a simple plasmid/vigor power that you just shoot to hack an object. This thoroughly disappointed me and further limited how you fought a group of soldiers that just blindly came charging at you.
The game is just way to short at a gameplay time of 8 hours, that alone makes me laugh at the price of $60. The reason why you killed people was questioning It seemed several times in the game that I was murdering hundreds of innocent people for no reason. It felt like their was combat just for the sake of combat in several places of the game and it took me out of the experience making me question why the hell am I murdering all these people.
Bioshock Infinite is basically a mediocre game with a washed over gameplay style of the other installments with much needed content that was taken out from the previous games, a short story, repetitive combat, lack of material in the game besides the story, and very badly programmed AI that can be predictable on any difficulty of the game. The story is a little unique and left me thinking about it for several days after beating it and the graphics are very beautiful but its not enough for me to say its worth $60. I played 8 hours, beat it, and will probably never touch it again. This game simply just needs more content and better gameplay with the hacking of the original bioshock in it and the upgrading of weapons from bioshock 2. I recommend waiting for the hype of the game to go down and the price to drop to about $20-$30 before buying it. People are influenced too easily by the previews of games and the HYPE developers put on their games that they forget how much your actually getting for your money, but, if thats good enough for you maybe $60 is worth it.
Check out Fallout New Vegas if you want to see what I mean by having $60 worth of content in a game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Overall I liked the game. It was a good attempt at making a bioshock game that was sandbox. It failed in that attempt but it was an attempt.

Graphics are so-so and the engine (modified unreal3 engine) is definitely showing its age. Its got Nvidia physx but the only physx parts are some water effects, your companion's dress and some flags... almost nothing is destroyable (which is where physx really shines), and while playing at 19x12 res on the highest graphical settings this cartoonish looking dx9 game gets somewhere in the neighborhood of 35-45 fps on my Nvidia 670. It really has no reason to get that low of a frame rate since its not rendering very much and what it is rendering is average quality at best. I played all the way through crysis 3 (a dx11 title) on the same settings and dont remember having my frame rate parked in the 30's very often... maybe once or twice. What Im getting at here is for being delayed over a year I was expecting way more than the 2009 wolfenstin remake set in a floating city with a companion thrown in to hit you in the face with stuff you need almost when you need it then steal money from you when you die. Graphics and concept 2 out of 10.

Gameplay is good except for one problem I had with the controls. I use mouse 2 to move forward and I found my character would stick going forward or not move at all if I searched a corpse and hit move forward either immediately before searching (search on the fly) or immediately after searching (search then fly). Which is a true pain in the ass when you're under fire.

I do like the mechanic of her saving you from dying or you walking through a "celestial" door to revive but I fail to see why this should cost me money. The irony here is if you walk up to a vending machine and walk away half the time she will go hey need some cash? and fling money at you. So wait you took money from me to save me just to give it back to me later? Are you some kind of co-dependent or something? overly attached girlfriend is that you?

Then you have the dialogue between the two main characters. I know its set in the early 1900's but your character treats her like 90% of the game then at the end he gets all attached and defensive of her. He was originally going to "rescue" her to bring her to NYC to sell her to pay off a gambling debt! Now he wants to be all buddy buddy with her in the end? Dubya Tee Eff?!

I was playing on the hardest difficulty and while most of the game was still pretty easy I always find it funny when on the hardest diff you pick up a weapon from a guy you just barely managed to kill because his weapon almost killed you in 1 hit, and you shoot his clone with it and it takes an entire mag or more to put the guy down. I'll never understand that idea, and will always question why they dont just send more guys for you to fight on the higher difficulty levels. I guess its just laziness on the coder's part.

Overall though the gameplay isnt horrible for a mostly rail shooter... They have all these achievements that are the only reason it doesnt feel so much like its on rails all the time. But they hardly make it worth the 9 overall score that everyone is giving it. There are very few side quests and they dont yield anything major so you scrounge around for a while finding a code book just to get a power up phial that doesnt do much when 3 hits kills you all the time. The vigors are more of a novelty than a tool and I only used them for a shield and to make a frenemy once in a while. I rarely changed clothing and the item screen was a hassle.

Story wise though I do have to take issue with the one spot where they find a guitar and booker sits down to play it and they do a duet of "will the circle be unbroken" and take out the word God just to be PC about it. The entire game we're hearing God and prophet etc etc... and you choose to mutilate a song that says it? Really? THAT'S your big political stance? A 30 sec blurb of a song played in a back room of a basement?... That is where you had to make a stand? ooook. Also I dont know if I got a different game than everyone else but I didnt get the scene from the commercial where Elizabeth is on the horse about to be hanged and you jump in and save her. Anyone else?

Lastly the end just made no sense to me. I get the multiverse concept but how, if originally Booker sells his daughter to Comstock, is Booker also Comstock? And if you find out that Elizabeth is your daughter all grown up at the end then killing you then wont solve anything. Plus she would cease to exist if you killed Booker/Comstock when he was a baby like they had planned to and the floating city would destroy the world since we wouldnt be there to stop it with her special powers. Which means none of the game would actually happen. I almost literally got a headache trying to figure out what they were doing. I feel weird about this game. The end wasnt cathartic at all it was just weird.

I did however love the first Bioshock because in that case the mechanic didn't define the game, yes it used the first person perspective and ostensibly you did shoot things but it wasn't a FPS, instead it was more of an Action Adventure a-la Tomb Raider or Uncharted. But Bioshock Infinite feels like the stripped out the everything that didn't work with the FPS genre and turned it in to a very poor FPS. Gone is the hacking minigame that even though it was incongruous with the FPS gameplay was still fun and served as a way to break up the action in the game. Look up 'story arc' and you will see that it is meant to dip at times between various peaks to give the user a breather. In contrast Bioshock Infinite feels like it quickly ramps up to 10 and stays there. One of the most compelling parts of the first Bioshock was the story and the reason it was so effective is that it was both deep and subtle. Bioshock Infinite feels like it is trying for depth but it has completely discarded subtlety and just beats you over the head with head with it. However, this game is not nearly as good as people and magazines make it out to be.
    - the gameplay itself is very generic, linear, simple and watered-down when comparing it to its predecessors.
    - the politic implications and themes are handled VERY superficially and just boil down to two simple messages: Racism is bad, religious fanaticism is bad

All in all, the game is okay, but nothing groundbreaking. Time travel and alternate universes does not make the story complex or deep automatically and this game also really doesn't have a true intellectual merit, like some people make it out to have. Also, it suffers very heavily from the extremely bland gameplay, which a game should be mainly judged on.

The game is a decent shooter but it's honestly pretty over hyped.

Some talking points: Story- Honestly it started out fine but by the end the twists and illogical plot points became overwhelming. Without spoiling anything it completely invalidates the entire journey up to that point (even bioshock 1+2) as trivial and unnecessary. It was a pretty huge disappointment in my eyes.

Graphics: I've seen others complain about this and they definitely have a point. The bloom, fog, and light shaft effects are fairly shoddy looking throughout the game (noticeable right off the bat when you start in the rowboat). The actual art style itself is pretty damn good though I have to give them that... very steampunk and classic bioshock.

Gameplay- Overall it was decent but came up lacking in a few areas. The gun selections didn't seem to matter in the slightest- there weren't many upgrades available and you could pretty much faceroll through most of the game on the standard difficulty with any of them. For instance (despite trying different weapons) I found that none of them truly mattered and ended up melee-stomping 95% of my enemies to break the monotony.

There was little to no benefit in saving ammo, exploring, or being tactical. Elizabeth constantly refills you on salts (mana), health, ammo, money, and points out useful objects.

There wasn't a whole lot of variation to the enemies and a lot of models were simply reused later on (under a different banner with slightly different skins). They also added an upgradable shield mechanism (like in Halo) which seemed entirely unnecessary and made the game easier than it needed to be.

I did enjoy the gear upgrades (though they made my melee almost unstoppable) and the vigors were pretty decent. I would have liked the vigors more if they had more upgrades available and were actually necessary for survival instead of just there for fun if you wanted them.

    Overall it's a decent game.

The atmosphere is something to be applauded when you first arrive. But as the game becomes more and more linear, as it becomes more and more apparent little thought was put into the enemy placement, as the atmosphere dissipates, and as combat becomes a large grind, one thing becomes clear: Bioshock Infinite is not the game we were promised.

It's clear that the developers knew that you had to start your game off strong. The first hour of gameplay was exhilarating, and the narrative gripped me tight, pulling me along with the sweet expectation of a wild ride. The skyline system was limited, but fun and useful for taking out enemies, and the vigors were fun and interesting. How you GOT them was a trip as well.

    But then I kept playing.

The game started to get more and more linear. Storypoint, large area full of enemies--the same enemies, for the most part--storypoint. There are few vigors, and even if you place every upgrade into increasing your capacity, you can only use a few before it's back to shooting. Elizabeth gives you ammo fairly often, and your enemies rarely have the ammunition you need, being as you can only hold two weapons out of about eight or so total, so you don't really need to search them for ammo. The upgrade system isn't compelling and it doesn't switch things up--you don't even need to search them for money. You find yourself It all starts to blend together, as you pick two weapons that you like, shoot some enemies, then move on without searching them. You find yourself wishing that you could be done playing the game so the game can take control and show you more of what you're playing for--the story.

But the story isn't that compelling after the gameplay has disengaged you. You're not as checked in as you should be. The one sensation I felt when finding the next part of the story was relief that I could check OUT because I didn't have to suffer combat anymore. It wasn't wonder or a sense of discovery. I wasn't overwhelmed by the quality of the writing. I just was tired.

When I was focused on the story, I didn't feel like this was some amazing narrative I was witnessing. It was good. I found myself calling or raising my eyebrows a few times, but it wasn't bad. Nothing was absolutely terrible. Some of it was even nice! But it seems to suffer from some awkward delivery and presentation, and sometimes things aren't really explained to you at all, or even given the depth that they need to have an impact on the player.

Games are an interactive medium. When the game suffers, no matter how good the story, the story suffers too. A better story would be worth suffering through--or at least worth watching on youtube, but the story is not good enough to handle the beating the gameplay gives it.

People say the game is amazing for the story. The gameplay is mediocre, but the story makes up for it! Most people talk about the ending and how good that is more than anything else, though. They don't seem to be overly fond of what came before, which was serviceable at best.

If there comes a point where you have to ask yourself as a player, "What am I playing for?" You're forcing yourself through something you don't enjoy just to get to an ending that's supposed to satisfy. But the ending won't satisfy as much as it could be by being attached to a better game. An interactive story is supposed to be enhanced by the immersion of the player. The gameplay and the story are supposed to compliment each other, and that's what gives game stories their power. But the gameplay here just brings it down.

But you won't get a better experience watching the cutscenes online. This, like many game stories, is robbed of their its if you just watch the cutscenes instead of going through play. And god help you if you don't like the ending. You'll feel cheated.

Do not waste 60 dollars on this. Do not waste your time. This is a decent story attached to a bad game, and you deserve better than that. I don't know who I could recommend this game too. It's linear and it's a grind, and the only thing good about it is a story that's only above average and a controversial ending that might be worth watching. But that ending isn't worth suffering through the game, and I wouldn't rob it of its power by watching it online. Skip it. Take your money to someone else who deserves it more.

Unfortunately, virtually every game deserves your money more than this.

Sure, the first few minutes are very inspiring: You get thrown into an interesting world and get some nice toys to play with. The voice acting is good, with many humorous or intriguing passages (this also stays that way for the rest of the game).

But after these first few minutes, you're ultimately playing a shooter-on-rails with a very poor choice of weapons and boring enemies. You do get a few things that have nice animations (murder of crows, melee hook...), but that just isn't enough when the actual mechanics of fights don't work well.

Apart from fighting, the game is supposed to be supported by a relatively complex storyline anda damsel in distress sidekick that you are supposed to -and probably will manage to- care about.

Unfortunately, any form of explanation that you might get about what actually is going on is jammed into the last few minutes of the game and some collectable items that you only find when you're searching for them, also mostly found at the end of the game.

And of course, when you *do* find the collectibles or read a detailed explanation online, you just find out that the game's characters and their motivations were largely written at below Loony Tunes levels. Their motivations and actions just doesn't make enough sense, and then neither does the story.

Lastly, everything in Bioshock Infinite just cries "console port", again the same as in the older titles of the series.
The game is just annoying to interact with swapping between weapons and spells is annoying, using the map is annoying (you're largely supposed to constantly whack a button and get a direction arrow to follow in game), freedom of movement is impaired and quite annoying, and you need to suffer slowly opening doors by holding a button pressed, clearly designed to "conceal" level transitions.
And physics, free movement on arbitrary surfaces you ought to be able to move on and so is also largely absent. You get some rag-doll physics for kills, and you can move around on specific upper floors of buildings (that a green area indicates when you jump off a hook point), but it just is all quite limited.
The graphics also are pretty bad, most of the time. There is a *huge* variety of objects and textures, but many of them just look ugly, blurry, artificial, badly lighted and what not. I have a feeling that the artists had their work molested to make the console port work, and then marketing decided the PC version couldn't be better, either but that's just a guess...

TL,DR: Annoying console-originated port of a linear shooter, with very uninspired combat mechanics and a story with poor pacing that makes no sense. Only the voice acting and graphical diversity (not quality) stand out. 6-8 hours play time, and it's over there is no real motivation to replay the game.

It is very much it's predecessors kin. But does little to innovate on what's come before. You have a constant companion, a few extra things here and there, but it's still the same idea of linear story behind a game of power up and collect money/ammo style shoot'em up. The graphics are okay but not great. The world is fairly well thought out and the plot line ambles along at a fair pace.

Unfortunately though, I found it difficult to maintain any enthusiasm, as each time I play I'm pretty much just following the same pattern of shooting stuff. There's no particularly good sneaking or cover mechanic, the AI is not particularly clever for the suicidal enemies, so that's not really enough to maintain interest, the jumping on stuff isn't really that great either.

This might have been down to the lead character being bland as can be, run of the mill rugged action hero type material or the relationships with the side characters feeling like an afterthought. The saving grace in this case was the graphics being gorgeous in some cases even thought the textures were sub-par. The overly used bloom effects I'm sure detracted my attention somewhat. BioShock is now a modern classic. Its successor, BioShock Infinite, takes us to a new world that is superficially just as captivating as Rapture, but the similarities are purely superficial. Where BioShock had ideas, Infinite simply has plot devices. Where BioShock asked us to choose, Infinite just asks us to run and shoot.

Part of what made BioShock special was that its ideas, emotions, story content, and gameplay were all coherent in a thematically consistent way. Ultimately BioShock told a story that was thematically compatible, and even thematically harmonious, with the conceits and conventions of FPS games. BioShock Infinite tries to tell a story, but the dissonance between the narrative/emotional content and the gameplay content is jarring in the new installment.

With a story that is so thoroughly undermined by the gameplay mechanics, Infinite needs to lean heavily on gameplay to be entertainment. Unfortunately, like BioShock, Infinite is merely a competent shooter from a gameplay perspective. Worse, the level designs are now more linear.

In sum, it's a a perfectly competent game, and disappointing when set against its predecessor.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Bioshock Infinite is barely a game designed for the entertainment of 'gamers'. It is rather a convoluted and unrelentingly bleak exercise in narrative by Ken Levine. When we get to the 'end' it is NOT The Sound of Music. Instead we have a narrative in which every major 'character' is soul-less and evil, living in a chaotic and meaningless world, where the (anti) hero (YOU) is drowned in the final scene by a daughter he sold, after he enslaved her in a tower....in another manifestation.........made possible by the ridiculous....pseudo science....of an entirely fictional take on 'Quantum Physics'. Along the way to its HORRIBLE conclusion the game revels in an unrelenting atmosphere of homicidal psychosis. The player navigates a long sequence of linear levels depopulating the city of Columbia of its men folk without any real rhyme or reason. Hand in hand with the daughter you abandoned, and then imprisoned (and who is going to drown you) you roam about gathering resources and unlocking achievements on a long journey to nowhere. It is not all terrible. The art direction of the game is great, and the lighting and bloom effects are well done. Vigours are fun, and there is pleasure to be had holding the v key down so that you can decapitate half the city with your skyhook. That is the only 'role playing' allowed here however. This game is all about the story. It is ONLY about the story. The story is that you are a moral midget psychopath, who will be drowned by your own daughter so that 'none of this ever happened'. If that is a 10/10 game experience for you by all means go for it. Have yet to delve fully into the DLC but 'Clash in the Clouds' feels way better than the core game since it spares us the dismal narrative. Despite my negative review this is a game to buy and play, because it is definitely INTERESTING. I hope Ken Levine can discover a sense of humor in the future, and put more effort into level design, shooting mechanics and role playing elements. Good games offer the illusions of choices, levity and reasons to replay them. This game offers no choices, no light-heartedness and very little reason to replay it.

"seriously?" well okay then i gave it a 6 simply because all that being said it is still an amazing game with an amazing story/world/style/voice acting and probably the best AI companion... ever. Most combat situations remain interesting, especially when you have the ability to travel around the battlefield on rails. Unfortunately it's almost impossible to shoot anything while so doing.

I'll not ruin the story, but I will say that it's not entirely predictable. I had suspected most of the twists for much of the game, disappointingly, but assumed the writers weren't enough to use them. Much of the story feels like it's a dream, in that it lacks transition and doesn't really form a clear path.

If you've been locked in a basement playing Battlefield games for the last ten years, you'll think this is the greatest single-player shooter ever made. If you have ever read or watched any science fiction, or played many indie games, or basically been exposed to interesting writing in any media you'll play this through once, think about it a while trying to figure out what the hell happened, and then never touch it again.

This game was a bit on the short side but I was happy that it ended early because the gameplay does not change at all during the game, its an average shooter at best. This is not as good as the original Bioshock, I found myself immersed in Rapture as compared to Columbia. Besides the interactions with Elizabeth and the graphics, Bioshock Infinite is a very average game. Expand

HOW can this game be rated so highly if after 8 hours, it's finished?! And you cannot replay it again and again for the other endings like the other Bioshocks... The story is just the same... I know a lot of games WAY beter than this. You want a good story, non linear, quite long? Metro 2033. You want great graphics? Battlefield.
This game doesn't even have Multiplayer... At first, i really tought that the story was interactive ( espacially with the bird / cage pin, the bird woud be freedom, it's not decorated yet it's the best and the cage seem the best, you love it most but your inprisonned)....
I do agree that there is a problem with collision zones, they're poorly made....
I did like it, the story was interesting, i really liked the originality with Elizabeth and i really loved the Twist Ending. But it's not Worth its Hype...

Another modern AAA story "game". The game itself is very basic and cheap: extremely linear tiny levels, poor AI, very short. Half of the game you just wondering here and there, participating in scripted cutscenes, watching something and so on.

Too bad Bioshock replaced true ingame exploration and adventure by this **** casual "story" crap. I guess 90% of budget went to "story", not much

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. i REALLY wanted to like this game. like a LOT. i played through about half of the first bioshock when it came out for 360 with a friend of mine and had a blast doing it. i had heard some really good things about this game and was expecting a very fun time and when it started, i was having a blast. and then i got about 2 hours into the game and found myself, all of a sudden, totally bored. the combat didn't feel satisfying, the vigors felt either cheap and a little bit like cheating or totally useless. the game did make me laugh out loud constantly, especially the whole Founders thing, and the conversations you hear as you walk around (there's a particularly hilarious bit about an artist that you hear from a man getting his shoes shined in the beginning of the game), and the characters themselves: it was all very well-done as far as world-building and story are concerned. but the majority of the game is spent in combat, and really, isn't the combat supposed to be the driving force behind the game? great combat can support a terrible world but a great world cannot support terrible combat, though that's completely just my opinion. anyways, after 2 hours, i quit the game. i just couldn't get into it. about a week later, i decided to try again, and this time to try and really PLAY with the different vigors and weapons and the skyrail. it was actually pretty fun, for a little while. the vigors are fun to use, the weapons are a little underwhelming but they get the job done, and the skyrail was wild fun the first few times i used it.

here's the problem though: there was just too much wrong with the game's combat for me to really enjoy what was done right with it. sprint being mapped to a thumbstick button and not being toggle-able (or is it toggle-able? i honestly could not tell because it was done so terribly) was a huge mistake, as was mapping iron sights to the other thumbstick button. sprinting from cover to cover was a disaster every time. by the way, lets talk about cover in this game for a moment: it is almost completely useless about 50 percent of the time. the moment you get behind cover you will then realize that there is an enemy right next to you on the OTHER side of the cover. you can't know where these enemies are (because the game makers decided for some reason that this game didn't need any sort of map for players?) until you're hit, and even once youre hit, it's almost impossible sometimes to figure out where the hell that shot came from. the "arenas" you move through (that's the best term i can come up with for them) are a chore, and instead of saying, "ALRIGHT LETS TEAR EM UP!!" every time you see enemies, you find yourself saying, "goddammit i wish there was a way to skip this crap". amazingly enough, the game did fulfill my wish several times: i died and then was resurrected on the OTHER side of whatever enemies i had been fighting, ready to move on to the next portion. i can't say that i didn't welcome it sometimes, but at the same time i still felt a little, well, cheated.

the biggest problem for me with Infinite was that i simply stopped having fun after a certain point. and it wasn't because of the weird controls, clonky levels, endless waves of boring enemies or the fact that i just didn't really CARE what happened to dewitt and elizabeth.. it was all of these things together that just wore down my patience. by the time i had gotten to the final battle, SPOILER: which is a terrible tower defense stage that goes on forever, i had simply lost interest in playing. after i lost the fight twice, i quit and went to go watch the ending scene on youtube. i have NEVER been so tired of playing a game that i wanted to actually just skip the last fight altogether. i mean, even in the stages leading up to the fight, i consistently had a feeling of, "okay, i'll just keep going cuz this HAS to end soon". that is not how you should feel when playing any game, and beyond that, nothing in an action game should EVER feel like a chore, which is what Infinite unfortunately felt like all the time.

as far as the story, it was on par with your average big-budget action movie. not amazing, not terrible, but definitely enjoyable. unfortunately it seemed like the deeper you went into the world, through voxophones, etc, the less interesting it became. at the end of the day, the whole thing felt like it was organized around the twist at the end, which is sad because neither DeWitt nor Elizabeth are the most interesting characters in the game - the most interesting one was Columbia itself. i give this game a 6/10 for the fact that it is fun and engaging for the first few hours of play. however, once the initial wow wears off, there's really not that much more to it. it just turns into a poor shooter with an average story and an incredible world that's feels only half-realized. i' d say wait for a good steam sale if you're interested.

I know I'm in the minority, but I found BI disappointing. Mind you, it's not bad, but I found its gameplay to be... average. After having loved both Bioshock (BS) 1 and 2, I found BI less entertaining, more linear and less strategic.
The visuals are stunning, sure, but: the gameplay is similar to many other games, you need to search everywhere for money (otherwise your weapons and vigors will remain weak), you can go on those rails-in-the-sky only when the game decides you can. And, you cannot plan in advance your boss battles (like you could in BS 1-2): the heaviest enemy, the Handyman, jumps around like crazy, so setting traps is useless; you better run around and jump on and off the rails.
Again, this doesn't mean is bad, just... not much fun. I'd give the gameplay a 7.

The real issues are 2: item managements and saves (or lack of it):
    - The item management is AWFUL: you can only carry TWO weapons (!), you can fast-switch only TWO vigors, and you have only FOUR slots for gears. That means, every time you meet a different enemy, you should stop the game and select different vigors and gears for best effects. It breaks the flow and immersion (BS 1-2 were much better at this).
    - The saving system is TERRIBLE: there's only checkpoints, and they're often far away. Besides, it's easy not noticing the "Saving" icon, so you often don't know the last time the game saved your progress: you could easily lose two hours of play, and the game may not even inform you. Sometimes I played for hours (even when I wanted to stop), just to arrive to a point where I was sure the game saved. Truly infuriating.

Hence, to me items management and saving system do not deserve better than a 4. I mean, they did a lot better in BS 1-2, why oh why BI become way worse?!?
In the end, I'd make an average and my vote is 6.
What a pity. BI could have been great, but an average gameplay and some really stupid interface choices almost ruined it.

And what about the story and Elizabeth? Well, the story is original and interesting, but the way it's narrated doesn't work much. It's confusing and not fluid. Elizabeth has personality, but I didn't like her much: she's often pouting or angry looking at me (hey, I'm saving your bacon, lady!), and she doesn't develop a good relationship. Alyx in Half-Life 2 was a way more captivating companion, someone I truly cared about; Elizabeth... c'mon, lady, do I have to look for you half the game? Do I really?!?

-not really an rpg? your choices don't matter in the game. you only get two options occasionally (ie. steal ? dont steal?) and whatever you pick doesn't influence the ending of the game at all.

Why do I say this? Bioshock was a game where you do not know that you could find in every corner of every wall, it was rather a game of suspense, however Infinite seems rather a set of an open stage where you can escape easily from most enemies. Another difference is the enemies in Bioshock had to kill every enemy, otherwise you were with another and another until a horde of chasing monsters instead Infinite sends waves of enemies that are very easy to kill, I do not say because they are human, if not for that being so many and most of them with firearms, which is very easy to evade your shot. This will leads to the next point: look and abilities of enemies in BioShock the terrifying aspect of the enemies you caused some fear and suspense and skills or speak, were extremely diverse and powerful; Infinite instead on most enemies have that fear does not cause human aspect, this is necessary for reasons of chronology, but also has, and skills in variety and damage are very few.
Graphics: graphics in Bioshock were the most realistic possible, which obviously caused a realism; Infinite instead on the graphics are slightly cartoony, which removes realism is nice aesthetically, but it makes you often notice that you're playing a game, which is the opposite of most of the objectives of videogames. The powers in Bioshock are really varied and creative, you you were a bottle in dozens of places; Infinite instead you find bottles obvious and visible places, I do not say that the powers are not creative and varied, but they are scarce.
This completes the list of the most important things that do not make Infinte of the Bioshock series.
As I said earlier as individual game is good, fresh and innovative, both in gameplay and music, graphics, but not Bioshock.

There is truly nothing that I will remember from that game aside of the awesome artistic direction and universe, which sold the game to everybody.

In terms of gameplay and level design, Infinite is a linear shooter with traditional guns and ammo - forget the bi-tri gun modes of BioShock first, there is none here - another CoD arsenal. Plasmids are pretty much boring too unless you're one of those hardcore gamers as featured on YouTube which spent hours developing crazy combos. "Linear" means the city isn't explorable as well.

The story, although its plot was predictible since the beginning, is Infinites' other main attribute next to its art direction. However, coming deep as it is... I consider it a bad story.

The DLC's didn't do it for me. They didn't really bring back my excitement.

The first BioShock remains the only one and you should stick to it.
