The voice actings pretty good, the characters seem somewhat interesting (not spectacular, but good), and the story is pretty awesome (the french revolution is my favorite part of history). What keeps this game from being absolutely obliteratingly amazing is its absolute HORRIBLE optimization. AND IT'S NOT EVEN JUST ON PC. PS4 players as well as some Xbox One players are having trouble as well. Also, the MINIMUM requirements are a 680. That tells you what kind of graphics you're getting into. The RECOMMENDED specs, probably what was used to play it, uses an i7 3770 with 8 gigs of RAM as well as a freaking 780! Jesus, no wonder everyone is having trouble. As for the port to PC, there are plenty of glitches, and I expected that, but that many were unacceptable. And honestly, even with a freaking 980 (watching the gameplay from my friend with an awesome PC) it stutters and lags and freaking annoys the hell out of us. So, Ubisoft, Fix the game. Make it more optimized for PC and consoles, and maybe then, MAYBE THEN, I'll consider giving it the 8 I was going to give. Thank you for your time Expand

This revolution is widely considered to be one of the most important revolutions for entire mankind (Western world especially), thousands of volumes were written about it. Fall of monarchy, rise of Napoleon, Roberspierre, left and right, crumbling of entire state, Reign of Terror, fall of Bastille, political intrigues, civil unrests, chaos... And what does Unity focus on? On a totally cliche, dull, boring lovestory between some French assassin (the protagonist) and some Templar girl. Really, Ubisoft? Is this the best you can do? Expand

I'm a completionist and a fan of AC series, yet in this game i was unable to do anything but main story. Despite playing it 5 years after it was released, the number of bugs is astonishing and systems lack the polish AC: Syndicate provided. It makes the game with otherwise nice story and idea unpleasant to play.

Assassin's Creed: Unity is the eight installment of the longstanding stealth action adventure series. I have to admit that Assassin's Creed was never my really my favorite thing. I have to admit that Assassin's Creed was never my really my favorite thing. I remember back when the first games came out, I tried to get into it a few times, but I never made it past the first half hour. The one that got me was the Black Flag, the setting was just too damn interesting for me to pass this game. I was not exactly thrilled, but I got into the story and now AC is part of my routine. In AC: Unity we leave the ocean and arrive in the city of Paris amidst the French Revolution. Now I hate revolutions and all the dread they inevitably bring and I hate the French. But I was determined to persevere. I did and I can even point some of the positives of this game: first and foremost, the setting. This time the developers really did put in a lot of work into creating a faithful replica of Paris. It is really beautiful and as historically accurate as the story allows it to be. It is really great and I spent hours just walking around the city and admiring the architecture and comparing it to its current state. Many landmarks have their own little entry in the game's database, so it can also be educational. The other thing I like are the murder mystery quests. These are a great addition to the series and I had a lot of fun playing them. The customizable weapons and armor are also a welcome improvement. But honestly, that is just about it. The rest of the game is just meh. I guess my main problem with the entire series is just how repetitive these games are. The main story follows the very well known format: He's a templar! Kill him! Oh, he's a templar also! Kill him! They have tried to spice it up a little bit, with at least few innovative ways of assassination, but frankly it is too little. There is a number of side quests with interesting lore, but all of them are also just kill, kill, kill. My other big problem, also with the entire series, is the damn console like controls. No matter how much time I spend playing these games, the controls still feel clunky and awkward, something that does not happen to me with other games. Classic AC feature: no manual save, just autosave. It is honestly not that bad, but I always prefer to save myself. Graphics is pretty good, kinda bleak colors. Game font is again pretty mundane. The stealth system can sometimes inexplicably fail and reveal your position, it happened to me enough times that it is worth mentioning. And one more little detail that can become pretty annoying. Several types of info windows with various text and in game information all overlay in one part of the screen, making you to wait to read what you want to read. And finally the infamous Ubisoft collectables. There are no less than 500 useless collectables and you will spend no less than 10 hours of your life to collect them all to gain nothing of worth. Microtransactions are present in many forms: buying special in-game currency with real life money, overpriced season pass that contained only one standard length story DLC and the myriad of weapon packs. SJW politics are present, but I would almost say that in lesser quantity than in the previous two games, which is somewhat surprising. But just to name a few: the drag queen, the army of women quest, female soldiers murder mystery.

    DLCs:

Dead Kings - The first and only real story DLC for AC Unity. It takes you just outside of Paris to a little town called Franciade with a nice, darker, gloomier atmosphere. Nothing changes in the gameplay, the story is set after the main game. The only big addition is the large system of underground dungeons and caves connected underneath the town. There are a few side quest, but the main focus is on the main story of the DLC. The puzzles in this DLC are not difficult on their own, but because they are not set up or explained at all, they can be really confusing. The biggest problem of this DLC is the greedy attitude of Ubisoft, charging 40 USD for a season pass, which contain just this 5 hour DLC and a few worthless weapon packs. That is shameful. Verdict: 55 %

I do not know what more to say. At no point did this game excited me, not really. Final Verdict: 52 %

Expand

With a new generation of console hardware, comes better graphics, bigger environment, and more of almost everything. This rings true for Unity. There are crowds on the street, NPCs feel much more organic than previous titles. The buildings are enormous, and filled with detail. You feel you are actually traversing the streets and buildings of Paris in the late 17th century. The infiltration missions were diverse, and offered unique routes and approaches. You can poison the wine, or you can cause distraction within a crowd, or simply just sneak above and drop assassinate them. Finally! the devs found a way to break the repetitiveness within missions experienced in the previous titles.

The difficulty is also way higher, which I welcome. It was extremely easy to blast through 20 guards in the last titles due to the over powered tools you had. But in Unity, items are way more limited. And you can no longer assassinate people during a smoke or stun. Sleep darts are taken out, and you only get max 2 berserk darts. All this promotes stealth, over aggression, which is great.

All that sounds great...BUT it's all ruined by one fundamental factor: the controls. The environment is detailed, yes, but this becomes a problem. When you free run, your character will often hop onto a random object on the ground instead of going around. While climbing a tower, you'll often find yourself jumping to the wrong ledge. There's simply too many things to go to. Unless your camera and joystick are aligned perfectly to the object you want to get to, you'll often not move or jump to the wrong thing. This is absolutely kills the pace of the game during chase sequences especially. Because of how volatile your character is, jumping to the wrong thing, or staying in the same spot, can mean massive health depletion. Or wasting medicine or smoke bombs. It is a very frustrating experience. There are also times where I've successfully stealthed through a large section, but only to be seen because an unintended jump was made.

The narrative was not very engrossing either. The plot is extremely political. I'm not big on history, as I mainly care about the fued between Assassins and Templars, and their relation with the present and past. I found myself not caring for the allies that died, or the enemies I killed. I felt no bond with them, as they all lacked character development. There was also an absence of present day sequences, which were a staple to the AC series. No Abstergo building and modern Templars vs Assassins. Virtually no story development in the present. This was a huge let down, as those were one of my favorite parts in the past titles.

Overall, Unity had potential, but the controls made it an extremely frustrating experience. And it barred me from enjoying the positive changes that were made to the game.

    1:
If I was to just review the game itself discarding all the technical issues I would say the game is f*cking amazing. Ubi has significantly improved upon the existing game and has brought the game back to the vision of AC2. A stealth focused game. Heaps to do, love the new parkour system, makes running through areas with chest high walls not a problem. I hate the new combat system, the only reason I hate it is because its really hard, which is a good thing. This time around you actually need to try. Lots of new animations to the game. Your character feels like he as weight and mass. The crowds are massive but don't serve any purpose other then to fill the streets. So there pretty much useless. The story seems average. I have not completed it but its hard to keep up. Co-Op seems like a good idea but is heavily broken (Will discus in second part of review) and theres character customization. Heaps of gear and weapons to buy. So that sums up the experience and I would give it and 8/10

    2:
Now, this part will explain everything I stated above but with the FPS/Stuttering/Freezing/Random Audio Loss included. I'll cut right to the chase. This is bullsh!t, the game is unplayable. Constant stuttering, FPS drops. ABSOLUTELY UNPLAYABLE. You walk down the street and your character starts teleporting around and the game freezes and all of a sudden your some where else. I can handle the minor issues like A.I f*cking up, texture popping, A.I randomly appearing. BUT I CANNOT HANDLE THE STUTTERING AND FPS DROPS. 4/10

Side note: The game features micro transactions to allow you to unlock equipment faster. W.T.F Ubi, are you trying to be the next EA.

the plot/dialogue on the other hand leaves a lot to be desired. it's hard to find any credibility in an opener when some unknown caller with a false name tells you within a minute of talking to you that there is a centuries old conspiracy and battle between good and evil, templars and assassins, and that YOU are suddenly one of the chosen ones. yeah right, pull the other one, it's got bells on ... as believable as the one about the Nigerian president's ex-wife wanting to transfer 1259509 billion into your account, etc... but some people do fall for that so go figure ...

co-op features are interesting and should be further developed. micro-transactions fail. unity app fail.

I'm gonna start this review by saying that I have been a HUGE fan of this series. The story of the elder races and how our past is not what is told to us is a wonderful concept that can be a legendary IP that most players would love and remind merrily even after years. And Ubi was doing a wonderful job twisting the story and surprising players.

Until Assassin's Creed: Unity. I wanted

    Until Assassin's Creed: Unity.

I wanted to love this game, I really did. I played it for a certain amount of time, not dwelling on it's bugs and/or faults. But again, even a fan has his own limits.

First of all: bugs. Lots and LOTS of bugs. I can't even begin to tell you how many times I fell through the ground, stuck inside a wall or a cabinet or couldn't catch a ledge and fell to an assassin's worst enemy: gravity. I'm used to bugs in open world games: you can't expect a game to be non-linear and bug-free. But combination of a buggy game play with really serious performance issues leaves scars on you.

Why do this game requires a great hardware anyway? Shadow of Mordor has better graphics yet my hardware was more than enough to play it. I mean I can agree that it doesn't have crowds, superb animations or a lot of water and/or reflections but it was way better in terms of both optimization and hardware/beauty ratio.

Another thing about this game is controls. Those damned controls. I've played all other assassin's creed games and while they didn't feel as fluid as this game (in terms of both animations and climbing mechanics) but they let me do what I want to do or how I want to kill my helpless targets. But this game always blocks my progress by not letting me out of cover, stepping on a board that is literally only centimeters higher than the ground I'm on, jump on the platform I want and air assassinate the target I want to air assassinate. Seriously, when you take controls out from a game that requires you to be fluid and synchronized is like eating rice without a spoon or a fork: you are randomly using tools, hoping to do what you want to do.

Storyline of the era (which is the era of French revolution) is really nice, even though I've no idea how French revolution went in real life. But the story line that I fell in love with (that is the previous race and how humans are created) feels like it's gone to toilet. We don't have a main character, we are just this anonymous player who plays Abstergo product but that's it. No more "let's go outside of the simulation and discover truth about whereabouts, missions and state of today's assassins and templars".

Conclusion: This game had the potential to be something big yet it failed to deliver what it was supposed to be, both as story and game mechanics.

Ok, Let's get things straight. I want to like this game. SO BADLY. I meant believe it or not they put a lot of work in this game (they aren't made annually, guys. They are put in actually around 4-5 years of developement, so they start work on them as the last game releases). The voice actings pretty good, the characters seem somewhat interesting (not spectacular, but good), and the storyOk, Let's get things straight. I want to like this game. SO BADLY. Thank you for your time. Expand

In one instance I attempted to move down into cellar to "rescue" an individual, where stealth was key I tried to avoid all enemies as much as possible, moving stealthily into position in the dead of night unfortunately Arno decided to hop from side to side alerting every character within eye view to my exact location drawing enemies from all areas. Ubisoft have tackled the moving down elements of scaling a building only to fail at the basic of moving down when at ground level. On a performance level it struggles along on an i7 3770K with GTX 970 FTW in tow, often dropping to the mid 20s, to be fair I am running at max, but why shouldn't I when I paid a lot of money to be able to max games out. The final nail in the coffin of this already emaciated, rotting corpse is Ubisoft's decision to include microtransactions in a £50 game. Pure unadulterated greed is all it can be described as. I really hope Ubisoft press the restart button on their next outing or this really should be in the end for them. My sympathies to the designers because it can look beautiful, unfortunately a lamborghini with no exhaust will blow itself out pretty quickly and this game has done so with so much style. A cobbled together mess that really needs updates, tout de suite. Expand

Well at least it's better than ACIII. [Issue#257, p.66]

Newfound openness of Assassin’s Creed demonstrates just how inadequate its AI really is for a stealth game: pampered nobility usually simply ignores a bloodied body on the dance floor, and guards don’t care much either. At least they’ve learned how to fight: unless you “cheat” with smoke bombs, it’s highly unlikely you’ll survive a melee against a group. [Jan 2015, p.62]

As I write this, Assassin’s Creed: Unity is a bugfest, but technical problems, however annoying, can and probably will be fixed. It is not cracks in textures that it is the most worrying thing about Unity, but the cracks in game design and writing.
