    + Graphics are outstanding.

    + A lot of content.
    + Coop missions.
    + AC Initiates is good.
    + Story is ok.

    - The graphics performance sucks, even on low settings (I normally play on high). It gets worse as you play, so it's probably a problem with freeing unused memory or something like that. This simply shouldn't happen with a game you pay 50-60$ for.
    - Missions stuck because of bugs.
    - Random bugs (stuck above/below map etc).
    - Ingame purchases.
    - DLC crap.
    - Uplay is offline very often. It hasn't improved much even after a few years. The interface and website are also horrible.

Ubisoft need to learn to finish their games before they release them. Players don't like being treated like beta testers. I also feel sorry for the people who did a great job developing the game, only for it to be **** up by some idiots (the people who decided to release it like this)...

The "plague" of needing an extremely upgraded PC to play this game will haunt Unity for a long time. It is unfortunate, because in the end, I think the Ubisoft folks wanted to make this much more enjoyable with the co-op and team aspects of the game. But that didn't work so well at first either. And to achieve that, most players need to have a really good gaming system, and that's just not reality. So it's like being between a rock and a hard place. I am changing my previous "1" rating to a 7 because after several patches and upgrades, I am able to finally play the game by optimizing the game and launching through GeForce. Still, the topic is not interesting. Arno is just not that engaging of a character compared to Ezio. The story focuses too much on the history of Paris (fine with me, I love history) but it doesn't compare to exploring Rome, Venice, Florence and other places in the AC II and Brotherhood series. Plus, where are the companion assassins?? Arno doesn't have any, except for obscure missions given by certain "shadow assassins" but he certainly doesn't command a team like Ezio did in AC Brotherhood and Revelations. Really, for a series that is so extremely popular to have over 800 negatives compared to 200 positives in this Metacritic system has to do not only with the "unplayability" but with the overall theme of the game. I rate games also based on how many times I would replay it. While I've replayed the previous AC games at least 4 or 5 times, I don't see myself replaying Unity for the next few years. It's just too predictable and basic. Today I received the DLC Dead Kings. The advanced video looked amazing. I thought it would be similar to the underground city of Cappadocia in AC Revelations. But no, each mission just takes you back to the underground catacombs and then you have to find your way out each time. It gets a bit boring. If the entire story would have been in the catacombs (again, maybe an underground complex like Cappadocia) it might have provided a bit more interest to me. The missions to "conquer" some outposts sounded very interesting. I thought wow, it's like Far Cry 3 and 4 where there is a complex of buildings you have to attack with some strategy. No. I was wrong. It's basically killing the boss and that's it. So again, simple and boring. The main effort by Ubisoft was obviously to improve graphics and offer co-op and team gaming (thus affecting a lot of people whose systems can't handle that). They need to focus on the topic, theme, characters and environment whether it's single or multiplayer and they would be more successful. Will I purchase future AC titles? of course. Does this rating ruin the chances for anyone new to give it a try? I say purchase the previous titles first, and then buy this one. By then, it will be at least 50% off. Expand

Everything online already tells you the game runs horrid on all the consoles, not just the pc. So to bash it just on pc would be extremely dumb. So yes the optimizations is terrible. The game runs about 24-25 fps on Xbox one and PS4. That is why I decided to buy the game on PC. I get around 30-35 FPS with GTX 760 4gb and 4770k on ultra settings. In some cut scenes the FPS dips down to 15-20. The newer drivers help boost about 4-5 fps. Patches after the game that increase performance are going to help alot. I have only noticed one bug so far, other than that the story is good, but not great. I mostly bought this game to see where the assassins creed franchise is going and to wait for Dragon Age and The Witcher 3. This was a better alternative than cod. Expand

From the story and gameplay perspective - it's the usual stuff... Abstergo is as creepy as usual, the assassins are doing what they do and that's essentially that. French architecture is modelled very nicely as are the characters. Story gets a bit dull here and there though, which is a bad thing in a mostly story-driven game.

Essentially - a fun game, but the formula is getting kinda stale and due to optimization issues and some minor bugs, it fails to rise above mediocrity. Hence the "slightly above average, 6".

The technical issues (framerate, bugs, getting stuck in geometry) alone should prevent anybody from giving this a 10/10 score. Case closed. The game is not as bad as the reviews show. The story was pretty good and graphics not bad at all for a 5 year old game. No performance issues playing with RX Vega 56. The gameplay just doesn't feel responsive and the game is buggy as hell. Overall a decent assassin's creed game nonetheless.

Some glitches still remain though and they may occasionally happen. As for game mechanics, they are significantly improved from previous parts. The range of movements is much bigger and Arno moves and performs much better and more naturally than predecessors. Stealth game is finally taken care of too. Combat is more realistic, slower paced and much more challenging than before, as well as stealth, there are also a lot of narrow interiors filled with enemies, so difficulty level has grown significantly from previous games. Character and equipment customization is also significantly better. So those are all good things. Unfortunately the story and how it is presented is the worst in the series. The story is not flowing, characters on both sides are insignificant, especially Assassins are the most boring and colorless in the series, complete lack of spirit, enemies are also not well shown and do not bring any emotions, you just don't feel any significance and threat from them, the game completely lacks the buildup for enemies, they are dead 1 minute after you discover them. The entire story lacks the definition. Even usually powerful things like death of people close to main character or his internal struggle do not make much impression, even on someone sensitive for such aspects. The entire revolution is also completely missing in the story, if not the chaos and disorder on the streets you would have hard time noticing any revolution at all. This is not what I expected from the game with such a great setting, potential was great but it was completely wasted. Still worth playing, because like I said in terms of visual fidelity and especially world's complexity and density this is the best of the best, mechanics are also good and challenging, character and equipment customization is there, this is all good and in this regard it has a lot of feel from previous games and even improves on that, but there is nothing behind it, the game is just not functionating as a whole. The game itself is pretty good if you have the hardware to run it. The missions are more assassin-like than previous entries, and you are genuinely challenged/force to think in many of them. The story is "meh", but the quality mission design and incredible recreation/ambiance of the city make up for it in my view. Coop is surprisingly well implemented, given you have enough friends with beefy PCs to play with you.

If you have the hardware to run it and enjoy the series, you will enjoy Unity. The gameplay and main missions are much better than in previous games. If you're on the fence and a casual fan, wait until the patches or inevitable "sequel" that will refine everything and run much better while possibly having a better story.

But it's metacritic, so of course the "this game sux!!!" reviews will be flagged as helpful.

Also, I find the button options weird. I guess it has something to do with the port from console but then again maybe this kind of game just doesn't translate well to pc.
One thing that really gets me is how much of this game is aimed at being online. Have to be online to open some treasure chests,Initiates (whatever they are), EStore. If I wanted online I would have chosen to be online. The single player experience is cluttered by these online options.

And it DOES have some major technical issues, let's get that right out there first. Play the game in its current form and you'll find yourself in a lagfest, freezing every few minutes and glitching through the ground occasionally. Though the new stealth/cover mode and descending option are great ideas at their core, their controls feel clumsy and still need quite a bit of tinkering. I'd discourage anyone from buying the game until Ubisoft has released a few patches that solve these problems, as it simply won't be worth your money in its current state.

That being said, this is the first game in the series (and really, I loved Black Flag, but still) that gives me the actual feeling the creators tried to fix some of the game's biggest flaws. The addition of a pretty decent skilltree and equipment system allows for tons of customisation and lets you adjust your assassin to your own playstyle. Random events, side-missions and storyline missions have a much better design than the game's predecessors, never feeling repetitive or lineair, but instead granting you an incredible degree of freedom to achieve your goal the way you see fit: Which is pretty much what we all wanted missions to look like since the first Assassins Creed. Difficulty has been upped (it's not quite there, but it's heading in the right direction) by making enemies stronger and more aggressive and by having missions require more thinking and planning. Powerful skills, such as bombs, disguise or double assassination, need to be unlocked first, which is actually a pretty nice touch.

The story of the game is so-so, but it holds up. Arno is definitely no Ezio or Edward, but he's likeable enough not to make you want to stop playing. Same goes for the other characters. Personally, I like Arno's animation a lot as he moves and fights with a lot more "sophistication" and acrobacy than most previous assassins. The whole Abstergo mayham has quite obviously been moved to the background and is now used more as a way of "explaining" the game rather than actually forming a progressing background story. Quite a bummer for the people who enjoyed it, but personally, I never really did. I like the whole "DNA memory simulation" theme behind the games, but the story was atrocious. It's probably better off this way.

I can't really judge as the game's graphics yet since, because of its horible bugs, I can't play it on (ultra) high. By the looks of it, however, it isn't really significantly better than the previous games. 18th century Paris looks smashing, as we've grown to expect, but doesn't feel revolutionarily pretty. A pretty nifty new feature in ACU's world is the fact you can go indoors now. You can use houses as shortcuts (freely, not in an AC3 cutscene kind of way) and many missions take place inside buildings. This contributes a lot to the whole freeroam feeling.

I'm rating the game a 7 for potential since, the way I feel it, Ubisoft is really heading down the right track here, giving me high hopes for future AC's. I hope people can see past the game's technical problems and still purchase it once these are fixed, as it might just be one of the most fun games of the series: An uncut diamond.

We can free the prisoners to create a diversion, we can rob a monk to grab a key to the secret entrance to the building and so on. And for the first time in the series, I feel that Altair's word are true: "I am the blade in the crowd". The crowds in this game are amazing. There are a lot of people on the screen. Of course, they are mindless copies with no purpose, but this is still enough for you to feel like a real assassin.
When speaking of crowds is hard not to mention the setting. The game takes place during the French revolution in the 18th century. And I have to admit, I have a mixed feeling about that. As usual, the city is done with perfection. Walking on the streets of Paris, now full of barricades and flames, climbing on a Notre Dame Cathedral - just amazing. But I feel like the story potential of the Revolution was just wasted. The Revolution is just a background. We don't take part, we are just passing by.
The story is ok. That is all I can say. The protagonist has its moments. For the first time in the series, I felt like we have someone who questions what other people is saying to him. But for the most part of the game, he is just flat and boring.
The gameplay was rebuild. The combat is better and a little more difficult. The introduction of descending action during parkour was a great choice. And for the first time in the series, we have a dedicated stealth mode. I also really liked the open-world activities in the city. Especially detective quests and city object-finding puzzles called "Nostradamus' riddles".
Don't get me wrong. The game has its problems. Technical issues, Poorly designed user interface, forgettable story and an open world filled with just a little too generic quests. But It is a good game. I recommend you give it a try.

The game itself is really fun and probably the second best game in the Assassin's Creed franchise but I can't enjoy it when I have stuttering and FPS issues on low settings while I have a good gaming computer!

Assassin's Creed Unity follows the story of a man named Arno Victor Dorian in the French Revolution . His father was killed at a party when Arno was just a small child in around his 10 year old stage. After that, a man named (Mister) François de la Serre adopts him. Arno played with a girl around his age named Elise and he falls in love with her, even though her father is (Mister) François de la Serre. Arno, in his adult years, is accused of murdering (Mister) François de la Serre and therefore he goes to prison. At prison, he finds out that his father used to be an assassin after meeting a man named Bellic. They escape out of prison in a riot and then Arno decides to join the assassins. Since this is a no spoiler review, that is all I will say.

Assassin's Creed Unity is a laggy and buggy mess. The game is great but bugs and FPS issues take away from it. Parkouring is the worst we've seen with nonhuman jumps, Arno never wants to go where you want to and it is just incredibly glitchy. Fighting should be good as they removed the counter system, and it is but the lag doesn't let me do it right!

Stealth in this game is great though, it actually is stealthy unlike any other Assassin's Creed game. I mean litereally why did it take so long for Ubisoft to put in a stealth button? It's really fun and even more fun with friends. The phantom blade is also great as it helps in stealth a lot and just looks cool overall. Can't say anything else about stealth honestly.

Co-Op in this game is incredibly fun! Even with the bugs and connection issues, I still do actually manage to have fun with my friends, although I do get frustrated sometimes with bugs. The missions are all unique, the heists are.. meh and it's just fun to mess around in open world. I do wish you could play the campaign in co-op because that would be amazing.

The level design, atmosphere and graphics in this game is the best I've seen in any Assassin's Creed game, it is incredibly immersive and the little details are massive. The art directors really put their heart and soul into this game and it shames me to see that I can't even see it a lot due to me having to run the game at low settings but otherwise, it is amazing and it really makes me feel like I'm France during the revolution period.

Arno is an amazing character, his humour completely matches my style (Sarcastic), he reminds me of Ezio which can never be a bad thing and he's realistic. Like Ubisoft stated, Arno is not just some grizzled action hero, he's a real person who can get hurt easily and has many emotions which makes him more relatable. Arno's story is about redemption, while Ezio's was about revenge. Arno also is a great assassin as he also thinks very stealthily which is what a true assassin should do, it's even in their brotherhood.

The story in this game is great, I haven't played it that much therefore I will change this section of my review in later time but from what I've played, it's really good although I don't have a really good hook that makes me want to keep playing it, instead I just want to be playing co-op a lot but the story is great and any Assassin's Creed fan will enjoy it.

Overall, Assassin's Creed Unity is great! Everything we want in an Assassin's Creed game is right there but we can't enjoy it when Ubisoft keeps releasing it in terrible times where we can't run it well on our gaming rigs! It's a buggy mess. You should really buy Assassin's Creed Unity but not in the current state it is in, wait a few months until they fix this buggy mess of a game. I enjoy Unity but like I said, it's too buggy for me to fully enjoy, it can really be an amazing game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is the only major Assassin's Creed release about which I can say I'm disappointed. The game is poorly fine tuned as the myriad of glitches and bugs can attest to. In other words, even if someone were only to play it for an hour, it would become obvious that the game was subjected to minimal polish. The story is no where near as interesting or engaging as any of the other Creed games e.g. AC2 or AC4: BF. Although I played it to its finish (I beat the game) on a powerful gaming computer, I can imagine how frustrating the intermittent stuttering and wildly unstable frame rate could be for those who played it on a less power computer or even either of the consoles. Just to give an example of the poor polish the developers did for the game, on the very last story mission, the antagonist continually repeats the same lines over and over if he attacks you or is interrupted while he is speaking in any way.

To sum up, the game is buggy and glitchy, has little polish, and has an uninspiring, uninteresting story compared to the other games in the series. It's still an okay game, but no where near the quality you would expect from an Assassin's Creed game.

The game is okay, but fairly boring and didn't really expand too much on the series' storyline. Combat was satisfying but nothing new. Last year we were introduced to naval combat and an entirely new atmosphere which was a delight. This year however I feel they've taken a step backwards, nothing in the game makes you say "wow".

Of course you've probably seen all the commotion with the game's performance. Firstly, bear in mind that all the other reviews giving it 0/10 are completely prejudice and these people did not give the game time before stating their rating/opinion. Yes, the game was poor on day 1. However, a few days later after two patches I haven't really had any problems. Admittedly I have two GTX 970's, but still, I'm getting around 20fps more than I was on day 1 and haven't had nearly as many problems. The game is definitely playable.

The one great thing about this game was the NPC atmosphere. Everywhere you go there are just hundreds of people everywhere, it really brings Paris to life. On the other hand this is probably what causes so much game lag, so it'd be nice to have options to reduce crowd numbers.

Well, Unity is neither my favourite or my least favourite AC game, albeit it's certainly the buggiest. Many of my personal problems with the franchise have been addressed here and at least somewhat improved. You no longer feel like an undying god among men during combat (i.e. you can actually die pretty quickly now if you do a wrong move), which in turn makes you want to avoid combat and use a stealthy approach instead. The gameplay in general feels more similar to AC2 than the pirate adventure game AC4 that really should've been a new IP instead. Movement still feels a bit clunky at times, but the new free-run descend mechanic is a welcome addition, as it helps a lot when trying to get down from rooftops without accidentally committing suicide. I like the amount of character customisation that's on offer, but it's also irritating as Ubisoft is really pushing for microtransactions here and it shows.

Story is kinda "meh". It's the same old revenge tale that we've already seen in plenty of AC games before, and Élise was the only character I cared about. The protagonist, Arno, is kind of a mix between Ezio and Altaïr, but there's just not really much depth to his character at all. It's a shame that the story did not take better advantage of the French Revolution setting. It's presented very well when you're just exploring around Paris, but the actual missions and side quests don't really have anything interest going on.

Performance on the PC version is a lot better than I was expecting. Granted, I got the game recently and have only played the 1.5 version, but still. I'm either really lucky or Ubisoft have done a good job fixing a lot of the problems with the game. I'm using highest settings except for shadows and AA and I get a consistent 60fps with vsync on, only dropping below that if there's a huge amount of NPCs on the screen. During cutscenes framerate can sometimes drop as low as 40, but it isn't too noticeable. The game does look gorgeous, especially during cutscenes. The biggest issue I have graphics-wise is that there's quite a lot of pop-in when moving fast.
As for bugs and glitches, they're definitely worth mentioning. I've played the game for about 30 hours now and I've had the game crash to desktop twice, and once it forced me to restart the whole computer when it froze so badly I couldn't do anything. Opening cutscenes of co-op missions never work properly and sometimes I can't complete missions due to some important NPC just standing around when it should be moving. Other than that you have your usual minor open world game stuff, like NPCs trying to walk through walls, weird physics glitches et cetera.

As a final note, the sound design in this game is absolutely awful. Some of the combat sounds are especially poor-sounding and the reverb on the sounds is often way off. Ambient sounds are lacking and the game doesn't have a particularly interesting soundtrack. Thankfully, the voice acting is pretty good, at least in French. Dunno about the English ones, since I couldn't stand French characters speaking in a very British accent and I immediately turned the spoken language to French.

Based on what I've written about the game so far, you'd think I'd give it an even lower score than I did. I really wanted to, but I just couldn't. Even with all its problems, Unity is a good game and I've had lots of fun playing it. It just could've been so much more, and that's why the final word I use to describe Unity is "disappointment".

Oh, and what the hell is up with Uplay games needing to be on the same partition as the OS to work? Every one of the games I play through Uplay have had the same problem. It's bloody annoying, since each game can take up to 50Gb of space and my main drive only has about 200Gb available overall.

The heroine had an annoying voice and Arno's personality was terribly designed. With a hood, the dudes like an icicle and when without it, he's and oaf. Paris is easily the best designed city in the series, both gameplay-wise and aesthetically. The game looks very gorgeous and really nails the feel of French Revolution with all the chaos.

Gameplay is top-notch. The stealth is still great, only thing missing in that area is whistling to draw guards which was present in previous games. More focus is given to social stealth, which feels like a return to form. Parkour is easily the best in the series, with controlled descent allowing you to properly make your way down a building quickly without a haystack. The combat is very similar but still quite different than the rest. No more "instant kill counters" but instead they leave the enemy open for a follow-up attack. One major gripe is that early on, there may be high level enemies that are massive damage sponges that kill you in two hits but that gets solved once you level up. You very much can be overwhelmed by enemies and really encourages you to run away. Overall combat is designed as something where you can definitely take on multiple enemies but you're not some godlike killing machine like the previous games where you could fight an entire battalion by yourself. The gear system is also my favorite in the series as you can customize your character to a certain playthrough without delving too deep into the "RPG min-max" insanity that usually follows.

Story is not bad but definitely not phenomenal. It's very middle-ground. There is certainly a lot of great moments that make the story worth playing but there is also a lot of contrived moments that are difficult to understand at first playthrough. It is definitely one of those games where the story becomes significantly better on the successive playthroughs as you notice hints and understand the importance of certain dialogues or scenes. The over-arching story is actually pretty good, it's just the individual arcs within the story range from messy to pretty good. The modern day story is 100% an afterthought thrown in just because they feel required to.

Overall the game is incredibly fun, very aesthetically beautiful, but the story is very average. Thankfully the story doesn't detract from the game to any negative degree to let you enjoy playing through the game.

The long-lasting taste that this game left me with, is slightly higher than the AC III game. It is a 7.

It was a major effort to upgrade the graphics but on the other hand the story was dull and could not come near the Ezio trilogy.

The difficulty of the game was frustrating, in particular the combat balance. Once again just like in the AC III game the environment felt very dense in a suffocation way.

Had I taken the buggyness into account it would have been a 5, but I tend not to.

    Overall Verdict

7.5: AC Unity is a shy step forward in the AC series, full of interesting ideas but also with none of them fully realized. Half single player and half multiplayer, doesn't convince in any of them. Most of the players won't even try all of the aspects of the character customization nor the side activities of a big ,and we have to admit beautiful, computerized Paris.
Fans will miss the atmosphere of the old AC games but is admirable that Ubisoft actually tried to add something new to the formula, and true AC lovers will absolutely appreciate some new concepts. With a more engaging story it could have been a better game. All in all, an enjoyable game.

    PC Optimization as of 19/09/2016

At the time of the release, the game was full of game-crashing bugs. After a year of updates the game is more than playable but still needs some tuning to avoid certain unsolved bugs. The multiplayer never really worked properly (cutting what could have been a huge positive aspect of the game). Not a well optimized game.

Do you?...I do...it should not be a secret...... PIRACY. That's right...all this happened because Ubisoft is trying to throw the pirates off it's trail. It is painfully obvious, in fact, the over-bloated graphics are a part of it's very strategy to recover revenue lost to rampant online piracy, as well as the included micro/macro transactions and the generic gameplay. I will outline three valid points: 1) why bother to make a good game, and innovate, spending time and money, when they are just going to pirate anyway? 2) We should over-bloat the graphics, that way, when pirates flock to buy a new shiny Nvidia GPU, Nvidia will pull in revenue from which Nvidia will pay us commission, that is one way of recovering revenue lost to piracy. 3) We should cripple the game at release, that way we can release patches later that will fix it for those who legitimately buy it, those who pirated it will never get those updates. 4) Let's put in micro transactions to unlock game content, that way pirates get freemium access, as well as get some extra revenue from legitimate buyers. 5) Let's over hype the game, that way we get more preorders, the more preorders, the better off against those who will pirate it. Yep, this is it. Remember EA and Sim City and all it's online problems, well, this is the same. I myself will not be buying this game no matter what...and BTW I pirated it. Expand

The game also looks very good but at short distances only due to the low LOD factor. The character textures are horrible however. I have seen people converting from low res to high res textures just 10 metres away from me. The story was going great at start but it started to become inconsistent mid way and that ending was disappointing. All the characters in the game had mediocre or almost zero character development including Arno. Everybody keeps saying the relationship between Arno and Elise was the only good thing about the story but let's face it...Arno was a big (and I do mean big) SIMP. Him being so trustworthy towards Elise felt so unnatural. Also character wise he didn't feel assassin like at all. He felt more like a lone wolf ranger type. The parkour is hands down the best no doubt about that. The combat "concept" is the most balanced in terms of challenge and fun in the whole AC franchise. However the combat itself is broken. If the combat system worked the way it was supposed to the gameplay would have been a 10/10 for me. Combat bugs and ridiculous aiming ruined the experience for me a little. For example an enemy standing just 10 m away from you takes like 3 or so seconds to fire his gun but if that same enemy is chasing you, you would notice that he can shoot at you accurately and instantly from like 50m. Also hud sometimes disappears mid battle which makes parrying a bit difficult. The camera angle fluctuates like crazy in interiors. And I did play the game in 2020 btw with the most recent patches and fixes.

All this, however, is completely ruined by the horrible optimization. The game runs horribly slow for a 3 year old game, and the mouse movement is laggy and sluggish which translates to "NO PROPER MOUSE SUPPORT".

You're encouraged to use stealth tactics because fighting enemies head on is next to impossible 90% of the time, and yet, the poor stealth controls combined with input lag make it next to impossible to kill enemies unnoticed as well. This made for some extremely frustrating missions.

The story is ok, but it's riddled with countless boring and dreadfully repetitive missions. And these are the MAIN STORY MISSIONS. I don't even want to talk about the dullness of millions of side-missions which I couldn't care less about. This is the only Assassin's Creed I haven't tried to complete 100%.

The city of france is beautiful despite the time period in which the game takes place in, and the landmarks, the costumes, the people, the weapons, and the different attires from everyone are recreated in superb detail, it is, even to this day, a gorgeous game to look at.

The gameplay has changed here from past assassin’s creed games, for starters, you have less control over the combat, locking on is done here automatically but it’s a coin toss whether it would work or not, half of the times Arno will sheath his sword in the middle of a battle if you face some enemies behind you, on the other hand, the difficulty is all over the place, the game is trivial in the main missions in this regard, but in the secondary activities, it’s brutal, and sometimes, hilariously, it emphasizes how poorly balanced the combat can be when you get surrounded by a ridiculous amount of enemies. You can’t counter anymore, instead the finishers that you perform, that are among the best the series have ever seen here, are executed when killing an enemy, you can also do them at times if you happen to reduce the enemies health to a point where their health bar starts flashing, this allows you to perform a finishing blow of sorts by holding the attack button, although sometimes this one works and other times it doesn’t.

There’s a ton of customization here when it comesw to your weapons and equipment, you can change your attire and clothes to a multitude of different items and this is a great addition, the only complication is that there isn’t any sort of “transmog” system, and the clothing items have specific stats, the only way here to actually enable any sort of transmog is by using “outfits” which are separate from the invidiual clothing items you can equip, and a lot of the times tehir reminiscent of other AC games; still though, the customization is a welcome addition and the attires are really good.

The platforming or “parkour” system has also received an overhaul, giving you three options on how to play with it this time around, you can climb up, climb down, and free run, a lot of this isn’t explained well, for example, in the first mission of the game you’re vaulting objects by climbing down… This gets exacerbated later on and, ironically, this was the first AC where the parkour system truly gave me problems, at times Arno (the main protagonist) wouldn’t move from a ledge, other times it would just not get a hold of the nearby ledge he had right in front of him, it was a mess for a while…

Overall the game is fine, it’s serviceable and beautiful to look at, it also runs a lot better and plays a lot better than it used to with most of the bugs and optimization issues squashed, but sadly, still, some remain, and the overall aspect of the game that remains here is one of clunkiness and a lot of unfulfilled ambition, perhaps for the technical limitations of the consoles at the time, or maybe for the lack of time the team had in working for the game, but either way, the game remains a bit of a clunky game at the end of the day.

If you want to experience it be sure to get it on a sale.

Going through the game with Connor was fun and the graphics were great for the time, but characterization was weak. Then came along Black Flag. Edward Kenway was an annoying character. The game had a lot of bugs and side missions were pointless. Gameplay basically consisted of naval battles and roaming in the sea, tailing other ships with your own which didn't make sense. All this made me hopeless for Unity. I Wasn't Waiting for it. however, when I saw the graphics and the world, I Decided to give it a shot. First AC Unity is a broken game. A lot of times, for no apparent reason, Arno fell into oblivion. Many times during free-run the game didn't respond to keyboard input. The story was the weakest until now lacking any actual climax unlike the stories of Ezio. The game was basically a tail, tackle, assassinate simulation, seeming like an alpha test for the engine, not an actual AAA hyped title. However I enjoyed it. roaming through Paris was fun but not at all rewarding. I wasn't even interested in going for the side missions. The strongest part was the Graphics which looked stunning, although it was plagued by countless glitches. The Whole game was a pleasing experience, but main story was ridiculously short and overall Assassin's Creed Unity had the potential to become one of the best games of 2014. It truly was a next-gen title. Expand

    Visuals/Presentation

First off the visuals, which right off the bat you can see the stunning detail that was put into crafting Paris during the French Revolution. The buildings are highly detailed, and pretty to look at, as well as nice lighting effects. The presentation is also good in Unity, as i experienced no frame rate drops or slow downs through out my playthrough.

    Gameplay

The Gameplay in Unity is rock solid, as expected from a AC game with minor tweaks to the combat that were made and in my opinion, the best combat to date for the series. It is definitely a more intuitive system then in previous entries. The new "parkour down" system is a welcome addition to the game and adds a lot more maneuverability to the game, and although it has some rough edges to it, I feel it can only get better in future entries.

    Story

As far as story goes, Unity provides a decent quest and a couple of likable characters but ultimately the whole love aspect between Arno and Elise as the main theme just didn't cut it for me. The story was good enough for me to stay interested, but i wish they did more with the Templar/assassin dynamic, as well as some more modern era involvement. The best parts of the game for me were the time lapse sequences in which you have to travel through different eras in order to reach the end, they were interesting, and above all unique.

In the end Unity is a solid entry to the franchise but nothing spectacular, some key things were improved upon such as combat and the new parkour system, but the lackluster story is a bit disappointing and it has me wondering, and wishing that Ubisoft would take a break before returning to Assassins Creed, so we can all breath a little

Now the downside. Janky controls are the titles biggest limiting factor. Parkour, which is a big aspect of this game are clumsy and at times, downright frustrating due to poor controls and poor execution in game design. Simple thing like climbing in windows, can be an exercise in frustration. As are running/pursuit sequences where the character gets "stuck" on objects in his path.

In short, immersive, promising but ultimately, feels unfinished and lacking in polish.

    - the single player campain wasn't what I expected, It took me about 2 days to finish it and I want it to be at least a week if I have to pay 60€ for it. Also the ending of the game, well I won't spoil but it was bad. You clearly didn't put much time into it and it was god damn sad. Give me a happy ending next time.

I'll put this to a conclusion by saying that I like the new engine ( still some work on it though ) but I miss the classic stuff like taking down towers/forts and having more than 3 missions/sequence. Overall it isn't that bad but you disapointed me. Try to make a happy ending next time and you'll get at least an 8.

I'm concerned about your mental state, kids. The same applies to you, Ubi. By AC2, you got the formula right. AC-B was, with all its shortcomings, an enjoyable game and an adequate vehicle for dramatic storytelling. Alas, Ubi, you've long since ran out of stories to tell, and your idea of entertainment is every bit as vague as the collision detection of your graph engine. Your PC code is horribly optimized, if at all. Your mocap is a century behind average. You got history as your playground and all you can come up with is rehashed content thinly disguised by a new cityscape. The man-hours behind it do not convert that well to creativity, Ubi. You'll always have Paris - now what about a game to make justice to it?

Seriously now. 10ers, do you really enjoy games that play you instead of letting you play them? ACU does just that. It never gives you any real freedom of movement or choice. You do the one thing it expects you to do... or start over until you get it right. We're mashing buttons so that the creators of this pretty but clumsy idiot of a game can have their amusement. I do not mind your ridiculous Uplay, Ubi, nor your micro-transactions... as long as I feel your commitment to give me some honest-to-god entertainment in return.
It won't work while your 'quantity equals quality' mindset rules paramount and the console crowd thinks your antics are the new literature. Still, a shame you're not even trying anymore.

5 out of 10, just because we used to be friends.
Do not buy this, boys and girls - it contains about as much Paris as Les Miserables and will make you feel like them, too.

The style, the world, the culture is just gorgeous. Big props to those who created this world and filled it with so many content. Sometimes you dont want to run till your next destination, but just climb the building and watch the city from above or walk in the streets. The animations are also quite awesome comparing to the previous parts. The plot is OK, dont expect any jawdropping story that will change your life forever, but its interesting to follow the characters story and overall Arno is a cool character.
And now what completely ruined the game for me - BUGS. This game supposed to reboot the franchise to attract new people into the franchise and keep the fans playing. What I got in the release date is a game full of bugs and glitches. I tried to close my eyes on them, but untill this date the game is still full of bugs. Jumping hair, not stable FPS, NPC glitches and the worst part - Arno getting stuck in the middle of air, on the side of the buildings. I got tired of those bugs so much, that i completely lost interest to play the game, because I would know that every time I launch the game those problems keep spoiling all the fun.
Thanks to such technical performance I will from now on think twice whether to buy a Ubisoft game at all and I recommend you to do the same. I hoped that Ubisoft will fix their problems after Watch Dogs, but I was wrong unfortunately. I hope that next time their performance will be better, because its a pitty that a fan of the series loses interest to play the game because its awful technical performance.

The voice actings pretty good, the characters seem somewhat interesting (not spectacular, but good), and the story is pretty awesome (the french revolution is my favorite part of history). What keeps this game from being absolutely obliteratingly amazing is its absolute HORRIBLE optimization. AND IT'S NOT EVEN JUST ON PC. PS4 players as well as some Xbox One players are having trouble as well. Also, the MINIMUM requirements are a 680. That tells you what kind of graphics you're getting into. The RECOMMENDED specs, probably what was used to play it, uses an i7 3770 with 8 gigs of RAM as well as a freaking 780! Jesus, no wonder everyone is having trouble. As for the port to PC, there are plenty of glitches, and I expected that, but that many were unacceptable. And honestly, even with a freaking 980 (watching the gameplay from my friend with an awesome PC) it stutters and lags and freaking annoys the hell out of us. So, Ubisoft, Fix the game. Make it more optimized for PC and consoles, and maybe then, MAYBE THEN, I'll consider giving it the 8 I was going to give. Thank you for your time Expand

This revolution is widely considered to be one of the most important revolutions for entire mankind (Western world especially), thousands of volumes were written about it. Fall of monarchy, rise of Napoleon, Roberspierre, left and right, crumbling of entire state, Reign of Terror, fall of Bastille, political intrigues, civil unrests, chaos... And what does Unity focus on? On a totally cliche, dull, boring lovestory between some French assassin (the protagonist) and some Templar girl. Really, Ubisoft? Is this the best you can do? Expand

The second I think I want to talk about is the level of the optimization of the game, and this is very low. I managed to play the game on maximum graphics, with FPS being stable between 60 and 70 and I think this is a little strange, because this game is from 6 years ago and my video card it's good enough. Other things I would like to consider while I write this review is the graphic, which is good, and maybe a little crispy and the fact that the gameplay overall is boring, nothing special through the game... I just can say that would be a struggle to complete the game if you are a completionist, especially because of the high rate of spawning random events on the streets. There are not many things to praise in this game, it's just mediocre, maybe not even that... Assassin's Creed should only be played if it is the last game of the franchise which you didn't finish yet. Expand

I'm a completionist and a fan of AC series, yet in this game i was unable to do anything but main story. Despite playing it 5 years after it was released, the number of bugs is astonishing and systems lack the polish AC: Syndicate provided. It makes the game with otherwise nice story and idea unpleasant to play.

I have to admit that Assassin's Creed was never my really my favorite thing. I remember back when the first games came out, I tried to get into it a few times, but I never made it past the first half hour. The one that got me was the Black Flag, the setting was just too damn interesting for me to pass this game. I was not exactly thrilled, but I got into the story and now AC is part of my routine. In AC: Unity we leave the ocean and arrive in the city of Paris amidst the French Revolution. Now I hate revolutions and all the dread they inevitably bring and I hate the French. But I was determined to persevere. I did and I can even point some of the positives of this game: first and foremost, the setting. This time the developers really did put in a lot of work into creating a faithful replica of Paris. It is really beautiful and as historically accurate as the story allows it to be. It is really great and I spent hours just walking around the city and admiring the architecture and comparing it to its current state. Many landmarks have their own little entry in the game's database, so it can also be educational. The other thing I like are the murder mystery quests. These are a great addition to the series and I had a lot of fun playing them. The customizable weapons and armor are also a welcome improvement. But honestly, that is just about it. The rest of the game is just meh. I guess my main problem with the entire series is just how repetitive these games are. The main story follows the very well known format: He's a templar! Kill him! Oh, he's a templar also! Kill him! They have tried to spice it up a little bit, with at least few innovative ways of assassination, but frankly it is too little. There is a number of side quests with interesting lore, but all of them are also just kill, kill, kill. My other big problem, also with the entire series, is the damn console like controls. No matter how much time I spend playing these games, the controls still feel clunky and awkward, something that does not happen to me with other games. Classic AC feature: no manual save, just autosave. It is honestly not that bad, but I always prefer to save myself. Graphics is pretty good, kinda bleak colors. Game font is again pretty mundane. The stealth system can sometimes inexplicably fail and reveal your position, it happened to me enough times that it is worth mentioning. And one more little detail that can become pretty annoying. Several types of info windows with various text and in game information all overlay in one part of the screen, making you to wait to read what you want to read. And finally the infamous Ubisoft collectables. There are no less than 500 useless collectables and you will spend no less than 10 hours of your life to collect them all to gain nothing of worth. Microtransactions are present in many forms: buying special in-game currency with real life money, overpriced season pass that contained only one standard length story DLC and the myriad of weapon packs. SJW politics are present, but I would almost say that in lesser quantity than in the previous two games, which is somewhat surprising. But just to name a few: the drag queen, the army of women quest, female soldiers murder mystery.

    DLCs:

Dead Kings - The first and only real story DLC for AC Unity. It takes you just outside of Paris to a little town called Franciade with a nice, darker, gloomier atmosphere. Nothing changes in the gameplay, the story is set after the main game. The only big addition is the large system of underground dungeons and caves connected underneath the town. There are a few side quest, but the main focus is on the main story of the DLC. The puzzles in this DLC are not difficult on their own, but because they are not set up or explained at all, they can be really confusing. The biggest problem of this DLC is the greedy attitude of Ubisoft, charging 40 USD for a season pass, which contain just this 5 hour DLC and a few worthless weapon packs. That is shameful. Verdict: 55 %

I do not know what more to say. At no point did this game excited me, not really. Final Verdict: 52 %

Expand

Okay, you are connecting everything to the Animus device, we are in a simulation or something. Come on, we come across missions called 'rift' with this logic, platform-based and beautiful missions, but there are very few of them in the game and they are designed for the main storyline. The conclusion I drew from those missions, I realized that if Ubisoft made linear games rather than open world, they would do much better. Even if it is ridiculous, this game cannot be played without the whistle mechanic. The tools we have are so useless that instead of distracting the enemies, we pull them towards us and we are caught instantly. There is an inventory system, but what are those clothes, our original outfit and the outfit we bought at the end are cool, but the clothes we wear piecemeal are very bad. It's satisfying to just take it for its functions. The period and atmosphere it contains attracts my attention, it reflects this well in the game, but there is a crowd that has no meaning or effect in the gameplay part. The jumping mechanic is actually good, but the character moves so slowly that it can sometimes go astray. They've already fixed this issue significantly in subsequent games. I will say that if you are not interested in Assassin's Creed games, I definitely do not recommend it. Expand

With a new generation of console hardware, comes better graphics, bigger environment, and more of almost everything. This rings true for Unity. There are crowds on the street, NPCs feel much more organic than previous titles. The buildings are enormous, and filled with detail. You feel you are actually traversing the streets and buildings of Paris in the late 17th century. The infiltration missions were diverse, and offered unique routes and approaches. You can poison the wine, or you can cause distraction within a crowd, or simply just sneak above and drop assassinate them. Finally! the devs found a way to break the repetitiveness within missions experienced in the previous titles.

The difficulty is also way higher, which I welcome. It was extremely easy to blast through 20 guards in the last titles due to the over powered tools you had. But in Unity, items are way more limited. And you can no longer assassinate people during a smoke or stun. Sleep darts are taken out, and you only get max 2 berserk darts. All this promotes stealth, over aggression, which is great.

All that sounds great...BUT it's all ruined by one fundamental factor: the controls. The environment is detailed, yes, but this becomes a problem. When you free run, your character will often hop onto a random object on the ground instead of going around. While climbing a tower, you'll often find yourself jumping to the wrong ledge. There's simply too many things to go to. Unless your camera and joystick are aligned perfectly to the object you want to get to, you'll often not move or jump to the wrong thing. This is absolutely kills the pace of the game during chase sequences especially. Because of how volatile your character is, jumping to the wrong thing, or staying in the same spot, can mean massive health depletion. Or wasting medicine or smoke bombs. It is a very frustrating experience. There are also times where I've successfully stealthed through a large section, but only to be seen because an unintended jump was made.

The narrative was not very engrossing either. The plot is extremely political. I'm not big on history, as I mainly care about the fued between Assassins and Templars, and their relation with the present and past. I found myself not caring for the allies that died, or the enemies I killed. I felt no bond with them, as they all lacked character development. There was also an absence of present day sequences, which were a staple to the AC series. No Abstergo building and modern Templars vs Assassins. Virtually no story development in the present. This was a huge let down, as those were one of my favorite parts in the past titles.

Overall, Unity had potential, but the controls made it an extremely frustrating experience. And it barred me from enjoying the positive changes that were made to the game.

But I never finished the game when I first played, I also went back several years later and tried again but due to other games, I stopped playing it again. Finally I decided to commit and finish it, I am very much happy I did.

Story - It isn't really anything mind blowing here. You play as Arno who gets roped up in a murder and is a suspect for it, after landing in prison for a while, he gets involved with someone who introduces him to the Assassin Order and he himself becomes one. The rest of the game is essentially about solving the murder and linking everything together. Not the best AC story but passable. Arno himself is fine, but he lacks charisma once he is an Assassin, prior to this he is a bit of a jokester, something you'd see with Ezio, though his development as an Assassin is entirely different, he sheds all of that and basically becomes what feels to be a shell of someone who obviously has an interest in Elise (childhood friend) but is mostly obsessed with solving the murder that he was accused of committing, he is not a bad Assassin, just not a memorable one.

Combat & Stealth - Being that this was the first real AC game that was developed primarily for the new generation of consoles (at that time), it had been re-worked with very high ambition, this will branch out to other things in the game besides just gameplay but combat feels very new, you are put into situations where going up against multiple enemies is a genuine challenge at times and you need to either risk the death and fight, or do the smart thing and run. There is a levelling system introduced here so as you upgrade your gear, the more powerful you get, after doing main missions, you will accumulate points to increase your skills which will help also. The combat was fun but I found the stealth to be very hit or miss, most of the time I got caught and whether due to a lack of ability on my part, or just the game not having what I need to get the stealth portions done correctly, that is up to debate, but I did feel I lacked heavily in this area.

Movement - The climbing mostly felt the same but there is a new feature for descending downward and this was a welcome inclusion and made getting about a bit easier, however there are times where it seems obvious that Arno can make certain leaps upward or downward but it just doesn't happen, or requires several clicks of the same button to make happen. This again felt like a big leap in the right direction, just not executed very well.

Customization - I loved the different options to upgrade Arno in this game, you are given so many choices to make him feel like your own creation and I really appreciated that. You can change his clothing in pieces which holds individual benefits, you have a wide variety of weapons to choose from from one handed to heavy to guns etc. This was the first AC game to utilize customization to this scale and I applaud them for the inclusion.

Graphics and Performance - From the first time I played the game to now, there is some improvements but there are bugs present, you will see objects floating in the area, pop in, among other things. The look of the game is incredible though, on PC, this game could have come out this year and be accepted. Paris is gorgeous and so many times I just had to stop and look. Crowds are another thing, there are a lot of NPCs and sure they might not be doing a whole lot, or aren't very well programmed, but it makes the world feel bigger and despite the glitches I mentioned, it is incredible how many can be on the screen at once without a massive drop in performance. I didn't experience it a whole lot but there are some frame rate drops from time to time, but not enough to ruin the experience.

Multiplayer - This was a big sell for Unity, a huge part of the marketing and I remember playing it when it first came out and it was downright unplayable, frequent bugs, lots of lag and doing certain things just wouldn't work. I have played some multiplayer missions more recently as a duo and a team of four, there is a delay noticeable like killing an enemy, they take a while to drop and you never know if they actually died, there are disconnections, bugs that prevent you from finishing. I recommend trying it out but don't expect much.

Collectibles - There is a lot of them, I feel too much and should've been dialed back a bit.

Final Rating - I think AC Unity was hit hard with poor reviews due to how it released, since then I feel some of this has been corrected and runs better, and I hope people give it another chance as it is a fun game, it has it's issues but deep down there is a fun game here.

Well at least it's better than ACIII. [Issue#257, p.66]

Newfound openness of Assassin’s Creed demonstrates just how inadequate its AI really is for a stealth game: pampered nobility usually simply ignores a bloodied body on the dance floor, and guards don’t care much either. At least they’ve learned how to fight: unless you “cheat” with smoke bombs, it’s highly unlikely you’ll survive a melee against a group. [Jan 2015, p.62]

As I write this, Assassin’s Creed: Unity is a bugfest, but technical problems, however annoying, can and probably will be fixed. It is not cracks in textures that it is the most worrying thing about Unity, but the cracks in game design and writing.
