The AviatorDecember 17, 2004 |
AvivaJune 12, 2020The character of Aviva, played by both Zina Zinchenko (and at times by Or Schraiber), is a young Parisian who develops an online romance with Eden, played by Tyler Phillips (and at times Bobbie Jene Smith), a New Yorker. After a long courtship they meet in person and fall in love, settling into an intimate relationship that leads to marriage, but one, as many are, laced with conflicts. Incorporating exuberant dance sequences, and featuring a pair of principal characters played by four different actors daringly expressing both masculine and feminine sides, “Aviva” captures a restless and changing today where who we are as women and men, and how we navigate the world, is up for grabs.

The Baader Meinhof ComplexAugust 21, 2009Germany in the 1970s: Murderous bomb attacks, the threat of terrorism and the fear of the enemy inside are rocking the very foundations of the still fragile German democracy. The man who understands them is also their hunter: the head of the German police force Horst Herold. And while he succeeds in his relentless pursuit of the young terrorists, he knows he’s only dealing with the tip of the iceberg. (Vitagraph Films)

BabylonMarch 8, 2019Never-before released in North America, Franco Rosso's incendiary Babylon had its world premiere at Cannes in 1980 but was banned from the New York Film Festival that same year for "being too controversial, and likely to incite racial tension" (Vivien Goldman, Time Out). Raw and smoldering, it follows a young dancehall DJ (Brinsley Forde, frontman of landmark British reggae group Aswad) in South London as he pursues his musical ambitions, battling fiercely against the racism and xenophobia of employers, neighbors, police, and the National Front. Written by Martin Stellman (Quadrophenia) and shot by two-time Oscar® winner Chris Menges (The Killing Fields) with beautifully smoky cinematography that has been compared to Taxi Driver, Babylon is fearless and unsentimental, yet tempered by the hazy bliss of the dancehall set to a blistering reggae and lovers rock soundtrack featuring Aswad, Johnny Clarke, Dennis Bovell, and more. BagheadJuly 25, 2008While the Duplass Brothers were shooting their last feature film The Puffy Chair, a crew member raised the question “what’s the scariest thing you can think of?” Someone immediately said “a guy with a bag on his head staring into your window.” Some agreed, but some thought it was downright ridiculous and, if anything, funny (but definitely not scary). Thus, BAGHEAD was born, an attempt to take the absurdly low-concept idea of a “guy with a bag on his head” and make a funny, truthful, endearing film that, maybe, just maybe, was a little bit scary, too. Bam gua natOctober 23, 2009Sungnam, a married man in his early forties who is an award-winning painter, shows up with his big traveling bag at the Charles De Gaulie Airport in Paris. He makes a sudden escape to a foreign land where he knows no one in order to flee from an arrest after smoking marijuana while he was drunk at a coincidental gathering. In the 14th district of Paris, he takes refuge at a run-down lodge owned by a Korean. Apart from wandering the streets and prowling in the park, he seems to have nothing else to do. He coincidentally meets his ex-girlfriend Minsun on the street, but their reunion really doesn't ignite any interest for him. His love and worries for his wife whom he left alone follows him around like his wallet. Sungnam is introduced to Hyunjoo, a foreign exchange student studying art in Paris, and her roommate Yujeong. Sungnam falls headlong for Yujeong's neat and sharp beauty and mind-boggling mysteriousness. Sungnam tries to adapt to this unfamiliar city, but like walking into a dark cave, he falls deep for Yujeong and Paris. (IFC Films)
