Using minimal text and no spoken dialog, filmmaker Bill Morrison and composer-guitarist Bill Frisell have created a powerful portrait of a seminal moment in American history through a collection of silent images matched to a searing original soundtrack.

12th century China, during the Song Dynasty, set against a brewing rebellion by the Jin people against the Imperial Court. Two hours before a crucial diplomatic meeting between the Song Prime Minister Qin Hui and a high level Jin delegation, the Jin Ambassador is murdered. An important letter destined for the Emperor is stolen from him. As the search for the letter unfolds, alliances are formed, secrets are revealed, and no one can stop the truth that is destined to leave its mark in history.

In 1858, in the Jewish quarter of Bologna, the Pope’s soldiers burst into the home of the Mortara family. By order of the cardinal, they have come to take Edgardo, their seven-year-old son. The child had been secretly baptized by his nurse as a baby and the papal law is unquestionable: he must receive a Catholic education. Edgardo’s parents, distraught, will do anything to get their son back. Supported by public opinion and the international Jewish community, the Mortaras’ struggle quickly take a political dimension. But the Church and the Pope will not agree to return the child, to consolidate an increasingly wavering power.

In 1975-79, the Khmer Rouge waged a campaign of genocide on Cambodia?s population. 1.7 million Cambodians lost their lives to famine and murder as the urban population was forced into the countryside to fulfill the Khmer Rouges' dream of an agrarian utopia. In S21, Panh brings two survivors back to the notorious Tuol Sleng prison (code-named "S21"), now a genocide museum where former Khmer Rouge are employed as guides. (First Run Features)

On April 19, 1995, Timothy McVeigh, a former soldier deeply influenced by the literature and ideas of the radical right, parked a Ryder truck with a five-ton fertilizer bomb in front of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal building in Oklahoma City. Moments later, 168 people were killed and 675 were injured in the blast. Oklahoma City traces the events — including the deadly encounters between American citizens and law enforcement at Ruby Ridge and Waco — that led McVeigh to commit the worst act of domestic terrorism in American history. With a virulent strain of anti-government anger still with us, the film is both a cautionary tale and an extremely timely warning. [PBS]

From renowned French director Robert Bresson comes this spare and haunting version of the legend of Camelot. The story begins as the Knights of the Round Table return to Camelot after their futile search for the blessed Holy Grail. Lancelot (Luc Simon), the leader of the quest, is reunited with Queen Guinevere (Laura Duke Condominas), who begs him to become her lover. Convinced that his impure thoughts are the reason for his recent misfortune, Lancelot assures Guinevere that he will neither cease his search nor become her lover. However, when the jealousy of another knight, Mordred (Patrick Bernard), spurs rebellion in the land, Lancelot decides to remain in Camelot and fight until death for King Arthur (Vladimir Antolek-Oresek). Along the way, he accidentally murders his best friend, Gawain (Humbert Balsan), giving Mordred an added edge in their battle. [New Yorker Films]
