Dahomey was enslaving Africans before the intercontinental slave trade began and they continued to do so even after Britain outlawed it in 1840. The Agojie were not heroes by any measure. TheyHow can someone make a movie glorifying the worst slavers in modern history? Has anyone heard of Cujo Lewis? He was an American slave whose parents were murdered by the Dahomey, who sold him into slavery. He describes these women. They terrorized the nearby villages to shake them down for money and kids to sell into the Transatlantic Slave Trade. They would go and start wars so they could get more slaves to trade. Thats why they were so well armed with guns when the French came to end slavery. However, they were no match, and 4 days later, the French defeated them, and slavery came to an end. Who k nows how much more human misery these sociopaths would have caused, all for greed. Expand

Imagine, if you will, a world in which the descendants of slaves making a film exalting and covering for the very people who captured, mutilated, enslaved, and then sold their ancestors.
That is the Woman King.
It's hard to imagine a more offensive movie.

For anyone who knows anything about West African history, this film will be extremely difficult to watch.

While a slight tweaking of facts is understandable in a dramatization of actual events, the Woman King is a wholesale fabrication.

Put another way, there is significantly more outright lies than accurate representations of the Dahomey dynasty.

What makes that so unforgivable is that they are trying to exalt as heroes the inner circle of a kingdom that was built entirely on slavery.

Alas, they do not stop there.

The makers of this movie ignore the fact that Guezo created female assassins because all the men under his rule were sent to capture him more slaves he could sell to increase his wealth and power.

Moreover, the actual Dahomey female guard were not true warriors; their job was to slaughter anyone who got close to their not well liked leader.

This reality was illustrated when the women "warriors" had to deal with French soldiers, who easily killed the vast majority of them with ease.

No one should watch this film because it is seriously a very offensive and warped misrepresentation of basic truths.

With so little being known about West African history outside the region, this was a beautiful opportunity to share it will the world.

Instead, they churned out a despicable piece of propaganda that seeks to rewrite history, which is a grotesquely offensive thing to do to all the ancestors of individuals who were enslaved by King Guezo and his minions.

Thanks, MC, for not going full RT yet, hiding the rating behind "verified audience".

---

Isn't it awesome?

The keystone to slave trade across centuries, the kingdom of Dahomey is a subject of a film. You know, the same Dahomey that kept enslaving Negroes and selling them wherever they could long after every last country in Europe banned slavery.

The female formation, which in history was squished like a gizka in their first engagement against French(?) infantry and was, historically, all on-board with the slave trade and slave labour, is shown as the invincible superheroines who also are abolitionists.

Now imagine the critics' reviews if someone made a film where the Confederates are the obvious, Jesus-like saviours of all the black slaves tortured by the Northern White Walkers, where they squash the Union nazis in a quick campaign and go on to rule the world in the name of extinction rebellion.

I did imagine. Too bad I can't just do what the wokies would actually do, so I'll just give this turd a well-deserved 0.

These where slave traders. Also the only reason that women and children are used in warfare is as a diversion and confusion tactic to hurt morale for the opposing side. If you honestly think that a group of women could put up a fight against male warriors you are probably also a sheep who thinks that men and women should compete in boxing and mma with disastrous results. We even have to divide the genders in banal things like soccer for that matter to give the women a chance to compete. You need to look in the mirror and realize that the person who stares back is a foolish sheep who swallows any modern lie that is told to you.

It literally uplifts the people who enslaved our own people as if they are the good guys. These people were the villains, they were the provider of slaves. White people didn't go into Africa hunting down tribes. It was this tribe that did it for them, and built their entire society on it. They would have them lined up in cages along the beaches to present their "goods." They were so bad, the French came out twice to force them to stop slaving. Great acting in a moneygrubbing lie.
Damn, it's hard to diss a movie that so much work went into, and where so many great performances were offered.
But the disgusting way that the writers have turned villains into heroes and sold a fake history lesson to the public cannot be overlooked.
This country was a despicable, slave-owning, slave-trading, totalitarian regime and its Amazon army, composed of girls who were themselves enslaved as children, were how the country captured its slaves.
Viola Davis is great as the fictional character she plays and the whole thing looks spectacular but none of this matters a damn because its all a cash-grabbing lie.

They were cannibals and the ones who raided, pillage and raped other villages for their needs and they were the one who sold off other tribes as slaves to the new world called the United States of America. When the world decided to get rid of slaves they denied the change and the patriarch or the leader said they would fight for a hundred years to keep slaves. Historical revisionism aside (and hoo boy was the movie pretty much based on rewriting history), this is one of those movies where it could have been entertaining... if only everyone else had the main lead's talent.

Viola Davis tries to salvage the film at great effort, but can't quite manage to carry it on her back alone, though anyone who says she didn't try is lying.

An interesting premise that could have been done much, much better than it was. Nothing was stopping them from inventing a fake fantasy country like wakanda. Or even better: from spending that big budget on actors who were closer to Viola's level (IE not boyega). Sadly, they did neither.

I could dismiss it by quoting Silvio Danese: "Amazons against slavers: the [militarist] action movie in the time of #meToo". I am prone to berating movies that take culture out of context.. For example, a movie where English is spoken in Japan would always score less than one where Japanese is spoken in Japan..

This movie is not only culturally inappropriate (speaking English in African nation) but it is terribly historically inappropriate.. It baffles me that black Americans would star in a movie that basically shames the pains that their ancestors went through at the hands of slave traders.. For this reason, it deserves to feature a ZERO..

This is like Jews starring as Nazis and depicting a group of female Nazi guards at a concentration camps as heroes who brought about the end of the concentration camp - rather than depict the camp as truly being liberated by Russian men fighting for the Red Army..

Utter garbage.

Fun fact: websites like trakt have stooped low enough to outright delete any review that dares mention how this movie blatantly tries to rewrite history, fascinating. Our conquerors are censoring us in real time and it’s high time to take a stand against these crimes. Enough is enough.

"The growth of Dahomey coincided with the growth of the Atlantic slave trade, and it became known to Europeans as a major supplier of slaves. As a highly militaristic kingdom constantly organized for warfare, it captured children, women, and men during wars and raids against neighboring societies, and sold them into the Atlantic slave trade in exchange for European goods such as rifles, gunpowder, fabrics, cowrie shells, tobacco, pipes, and alcohol."

"There are accounts of Dahomey warriors conducting slave raids on villages where they cut the heads off of the elderly and rip the bottom jaw bones off others."z

but if you think this movie is any indication of history than you have no understanding of history and eat anything hollywood feeds you

The Tribe in this movie weren't fighting to stop slavery, they themselves gained all their wealth by capturing and selling other African nations into Slavery. The French ended up fighting them to stop them inslaving their own people. Takes a few seconds to do some simple research. The only thing this film has to say is WHITE MAN EVIL. Not that human beings are just awful in general, no matter what the skin colour. No complexity, just white washing of history to fit THE MESSAGE.
