This is an excellent adaptation. At least for any fan of the games. Even if you do not know the source material it should be easy to follow. I have never written a review about anything and published it online, but this time, I feel like I have to spread the word.
I came in with low expectations, since I saw some of the casting choices and the "meh" trailers. I should also sayI have never written a review about anything and published it online, but this time, I feel like I have to spread the word.
I came in with low expectations, since I saw some of the casting choices and the "meh" trailers. I should also say that I'm an avid fan of the games, although I have never read the books.

I was absolutely blown away by the show. It gripped me from front to finish with its fantastic acting, genius writing, epic music, perfectly timed humor, I could go on. From Geralt to Yennifer to Ciri to Queen Calanthe, the range on these actors in the multitude of situations they're put in is insane. They all portray their characters, as far as I am aware of, wonderfully. Storytellingwise, they conveyed, in the first episode alone, the chemistry between the different people and made me care for them enough that what came later in the episode really impacted me. I don't think there has ever been a series that has managed that with me. Usually, when writers make big scenes for characters that I've only just met, it falls flat on its face but not here. What the show also does is set up mysteries and unknown that are slowly unravelled and paid out immensely. Without spoiling too much, they make use of multiple timelines - something they don't outright say but that becomes clearer over the first few episodes. When these timelines are merged later, it is fluid, epic and makes sense. Not something I can say of most series, once again.
The action is some of the best I've ever seen, without the hollywood shaky cam. Everything is deliberate, brutal and visible. The timing on the humor had me laughing out loud more times than I remember, not just from Dandelion but Geralt and the entire cast.

Now to get to what every 0 here has pointed out: the casting. I had my concerns as well, as to whether those decisions are somehow indicators of other bad decisions. And whether it would rip me out of the immersion. But no. It could have - but it didn't, because everything else was so goddamned good. I stopped noticing already during the first episode. Maybe also because there were so few examples of where it went wrong. Sure, I'm kind of distanced from Triss because she isn't the Triss I know from the games, but her acting was great, really. Didn't throw me off too much, I just have to relearn some emotional attachments. This series is anything but a political message and to all those who are so convinced it is: you're just the same as the people who would like one to be in every movie. This series is a masterpiece. And I can't wait for more. Maybe in some parts with a smidge more budget so they can really run wild, but with what they did with so little, I have no qualms either way ;) .

P.S.: I love Dandelion. Just wanted to put that out there.… Expand

Was a bit confusing on the timeline, but exciting enough to watch completely again. Only issue was the cliffhanger ending—Can’t wait for next season!

The only problem is the pacing of the story. Being a huge world filled with all sorts of monsters and kingdoms, it is pretty much impossible to explain the world whilst advancing the story. If you are new to the series you could be put off by the said pacing.
Since I've played the game (last chapter only mind you) I am pretty well acquainted with the world and so my is 10/10.
Cavil as Garry The Metrosexual fruitcake is on point. Great .
So, the only con is the sort of a rushed story due to the size of the material.… Expand

Oh! I loved this! As a huge fan of the video games (and my wife a huge fan of the books), we are both extremely happy how this turned out. Sad thing is, the first season will only capture people who has some knowledge of the source material.Oh! I loved this! Henry cavil does a good job as Geralt and I can admit I was wrong in my doubts of the guy. This series does nothing to hold the viewer's hand, you are plunged straight into the complex universe of The Witcher with few guideposts. I'd say this is why a lot of media reviewers have been negative, they are just mystified.

For people who already know the basic universe, or who are prepared to work it out as they go along, the show is extremely well done. I'm only four episodes in and each one has been better than the last.

I'm glad I have another six episodes up my sleeve to enjoy and that there is another season on the way.… Expand

I gave a chance to the series and it did not disappoint me. Over time, I was imbued with sympathy for the characters in the series and no longer experienced discomfort. People who find fault with such things and various trifles seem to me biased and too conservative. Sometimes, it seems to me that they are trying to amuse their pride in this way, thereby showing that they read books compared to some. I am sincerely sorry for such people, because they are fixated on trifles and are unable to enjoy a good series. Watching the series, I did not feel discomfort about the races. The image of Kalante and Yennifer are quite feminist in the series and, in principle, this corresponds to their characteristics in the books. Ciri in the book was either lesbian or bi. The series is not one of those that you can run in the background and do household chores. You must be very careful not to miss important details. The plot is messy, but this is not a script problem. It is rather a problem of the source. The first season of the series is based on the first two books of Sapkowski, which were not novels, but cycles of stories and are chaotic in themselves. As for me, the creators of the series managed to streamline the Geralt storyline better than it was in the stories. This film adaptation has surpassed its literary source. The creators managed to do this with the help of their freedom in the plot. With all due respect to Sapkovsky, he was not a drama guru, and most people found out about his books thanks to the witcher’s game series, which continued the plot from the books. Almost all the creators' liberties in the plot added drama and were created in order to better adapt the plot to the cinema. Moreover, all ideas and meanings have been preserved. In the series, the internal conflicts of the characters are much better developed. The characters look more multifaceted than in the cycles of Sapkovsky's stories. The picture and dialogs are good, but not perfect. The creators have something to work on. Of the advantages I want to especially highlight the musical accompaniment in the series, added humor and fighting scenes. The series has great potential. (Sorry for my English)… Expand

Successfully fit the acting of bard "Jaskier" , jokes and annoyed - amazing!
Yennefer z Vengerbergu - great actress and acting, drama, feelings - high level!
Battle scenes is like "Spartacus: Gods of the Arena" - spectacular, bloody and cruel.
Nice picture and atmospheric music are doing this movie!
Excellent!, Well done!, Splendid!, Very well!, That's famous!
The only thing is not enough battles with monsters, although people are worse than them!… Expand

Half way through the first season and I have enjoyed the first 4 hours. The Netflix introduction to the Witcher world is good. As a vivid fan of the books and the games, i must say i really enjoyed this show.
Each episode plays perfectly, and holds the spirit of the books well.

The characters are well played, and well excecuted. The cast does a good job in their roles, so theres never a moment without suspense or thrill.

If you love the books or the videogames, this is a must watch!

If you know nothing of the witcher series, read the books first, it may help with the show.

Rating the series after its first season: story was good and was true to its roots in Sapkowski books. As an avid fan of the books and the games, I was nervous heading into the beginning of this series. Particularly Henry Cavil. And I am happy to say my fears were unfounded. And I am happy to say my fears were unfounded. While the show did take some liberties with the story overall, the premise stays remarkably close to the source material. Henry is amazing as Geralt, with his grunts being the best part of the lot. The action sequences are brutal and well-choreographed. The settings both indoors and out are amazing and true to my mind's eye view of the world. It all really does come together fantastically to tell an awesome story and set the basis for what I hope will be a long ride. Side Note 1: This does not take place in "Eastern Europe". Many people are complaining about the "diversity" of the cast and how that is unrealistic by medieval European standards. Well, I hate to break it to you, but this is FANTASY FICTION that takes place on the Continent, an entirely made-up place.
Side Note 2: Get over yourselves if you have an issue with diversity. Everything is made up and your points don't matter. These books feature women as some of the strongest characters there are and the diversity in the Race of the actors who are playing make-believe characters only means something to you if you do not like the races in question outside of fictional universes. You have a whole other problem if that is what is stopping you from actually enjoying something that is well-made and lovingly crafted. Sucks that internet gave you a voice and let you believe anyone cared enough for you to use it. Side note 3: I hope Metacritic has enough sense and courage to go through and delete the hate and vitriol from these snowflake conservative racist incels and remove them from the site. They are destroying this site and negatively impacting the reviews and scores for almost anything worth merit.… Expand

Kwestia czasu i przemyślenia pewnych spraw i myślę że jak Netflixie posłucha takich komentarzy przyłożył się bardziej do serialu ale źle nie jest :) wstępne wrażenie 4+/6

The show is great. Actors clearly understood their characters, especially Henry Cavill. Geralt was depicted wonderfully by Henry. Netflix hit the jackpot with him as the main character. Every single element is top-notch: with flawless cinematography and direction; excellent performances by the entire cast, but special mention to Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia. The plot is perfectly crafted to create parallelisms between scenes in the past (most of Yennefer and Geralt scenes) and in the present (everything that happens with Princess Ciri). It may be a difficult to follow the story in chronological order, but it's totally worth it for the purpose of creating a more powerful message with each episode. Fighting scenes are spectacularly choreographed and shot. The special effects are very well done, especially the creatures.

The setting is absolutely fascinating. It's a very complex world with a lot of different factions and kingdoms struggling for power and dominance. The witchers like Geralt are pariahs, even though they risk their lives to fight all kinds of monsters. Witchers aren't heroes per se, as they ask for payment for their service. Sorcerers are another important faction in this world. They usually act as counselors to kings and queens, but they have ulterior motives. Elves appear not as the respected and powerful beings like in Lord of the Rings, but as a threat to Human dominance.

It's very difficult for me to come up with flaws. As you can tell, I adore this series. But it has to be said I'm a huge fan of the fantasy genre, so your mileage may vary if you're not. If you're not too fond of the fantasy elements, there's a lot to enjoy besides that, from political intrigues, to epic battles, to empowering female characters, to moments of romance or comedy, always handled with tact and taste.… Expand

Witcher is a nice complex TV show. I have never read the books, but played all the games. The story is amazing and the different time structure makes you think on how thing progress. I think the voice of Gerald was good but was hard to perceive. In that aspect, subtitles are a must. The Bard segments are deliciously funny. And Yennefer is dangerous and sensuous. I give it a 84% because I didn't see Roach magical reappears. I can't wait for season 2. Almost feel like torture just to wait...… Expand

Great enjoyable viewing. Good action scenes, sufficient comedic relief to keep it from getting overly dark. Good acting generally though there could be improvements here.

Like others, I'm confused by the low critic scores on this. Admittedly, the show would likely be more confusing for anyone not familiar with the books or games, but as an adaptation, it's amazing. Yenifer stole more than half of the show time for yourself (does this serial called Witcher?)
Yenifer was the most useless and selfish character in the fight in the last episode. This is your diversity show Triss and Yenifer as similar visual characters? Maybe at least make different hair color?
What the point of so much silence faces in dialogs? To show that character a little stupid and need so much time to think?
Why all black characters have main secondary roles or powerful roles? I don't have anything against black people in power, but why only powerful roles? Isn't this a little bit of racism? Dialogues have some problems, telling obvious things to fulfil time not cool.
It easy to see that this is a modern people in old clothes, not like people feel and play like characters of those old times.
Ciri beautiful character pick, but sometimes a little bit stupid. I understand that she afraid of everything and very young. But not in the 10nd ep, she saw more **** that everyone reading this already, it need to be some grow of character during 10 episodes.
Too many feminists monologues. Stop forcing this pls, we are live on equal society, don't make it matriarch.
Can't not mention Joey's good screenplay and witcher song :)
All in all, I awaiting for new parts of the series but hope producing will be better...… Expand

No one person holds this t.v show together, even the cameos of less actors are really well done based on plot and their lines.

The second season is by far the best and i didn't think it could get better after the secoond season, really anticipating the third season. When i heard Henry Cavil was playing Geralt i was really sceptical he could do it, but his execution is flawless doesn't play Geralt like he's a cartoon, but doesn't suck the life out of him either, the lines and quips they gave him are perfect doesn't overplay it. Can't believe the user score is so low for this show, it's a masterpiece.… Expand

I started out a little cheesy, but it got better as it went. Some of the action choreography was surprisingly well done. All in all, I liked the show, and I am looking forward to seeing the next season.

With political messages kept at a tasteful level, and filled with drama, sex and violence, this is a much better example of a good liberal entertainment. You can't change minds with your films if people don't want to watch it. If they spent a little more effort and screen time to dig into the story and a tad less on their political touch points, this can really benefit. The monster CGI fights also needed some better direction. Don't let the terri-bad first fight scene in Episode 1 put you off, it does get much better.… Expand

As in the books and games, the main character is Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill) and i'm not afraid to say that he has done an incredible job with such a difficult character. Besides, the other main characters such us Yenn, Jaskier or Ciri are way better than I expected.
Although there are really good points, the show is not perfect at all. There are some decisions like Triss Merigold casting, or some storylines which are very different from the book. (I don't mean that the actress which interpretates Triss isn't good, what I mean is that if any character is perfectly described in the book like a white red-colored Triss, why would you have to change her? Is it necessary?).
In conclusion, if you are expecting to watch what you have red in the books, this isn't your show, but if you are open-minded you have to give it a chance.… Expand

Well, i have mixed feelings for this but in overall i was amazed and i respect the director because it was loyal to the books!

I didn't like some other picks like triss and yen (mostly for the appearance) but yen was not that bad, she did her best i believe. Dantelion was amazing too!
Now for the plot... If you haven't read the books and you haven't played the games then it will be a complete mess because the storyline doesn't play with the right order.
The music was good in overall but i was hoping for the Percival band to make the OST...
Anyways, i am looking forward for the next season, it will be a lot better i believe because now they have a bigger budget.… Expand

Me ha gustado bastante el inicio de la serie, como persona que se ha leído los libros, hay algunas cosas que me han y que no me han gustado, principalmente en la elección de algunos actores y decisiones de meter actos o no meter actos losMe ha gustado bastante el inicio de la serie, como persona que se ha leído los libros, hay algunas cosas que me han y que no me han gustado, principalmente en la elección de algunos actores y decisiones de meter actos o no meter actos los cuales puedan ser importantes para la trama.

Pero en si me ha parecido un buen comienzo para la serie, es cierto que el primer libro y el segundo los ha puesto casi enteros en una temporada, pero esque el primer libro en si no tiene mucho más que historias sueltas e inconexas y no habría sido buena idea iniciar una serie tan larga con un empezar tan flojo.

Henry Cavil borda el papel como Geralt, pero se nota que su papel esta más basado en el Geralt de los videojuegos que en el de los libros, Geralt en los libros es más hablador y dialoga en cada situación, aquí lo han querido hacer más duro y fuerte como termina siendo en los juegos, lo cual no me parece mal es cuestión de gustos.

La armadura de Nilfgaard es una absoluta vergüenza, aunque después tienes todo el resto de personajes que visten a la perfección, lo cual cuesta creer que sea la misma persona la que ha hecho las dos cosas pero bueno.... espero que para siguientes temporadas cambien eso, ya que vamos a ver bastante a los soldados de Nilfgaard.

En si esta bastante bien, un primera temporada buena, y losiento mucho aquellos que vengan de ver juego de tronos y esperen en una temporada un trama tan desarrollada como las 8 que tiene GOT (La cual termino siendo una M), ¿Osea estamos tontos o que? volver a ver la primera temporada de juego de tronos y analizar lo que cuenta de todo su universo.

Es normal son historias con muchos personajes e igual que en la primera temporada de GOT no conoces a la mitad de los personajes ni problemas políticos ni trama principal, aquí tampoco.

Asique por dios dejar de comparar las series ya, que tanto en trama en objetivo y en mensaje las dos series van a terminar siendo muy distintas si son fieles a los libros.… Expand

So my First opinion on Henry being geralt was critical. But After watching the First 2 Episodes i began to love his style and how good he played geralt in the series. Cirilla was also no Problem but i hope in the future, the actress is aware of the Role that she is playing,because cirilla is the most Important character in the whole witcher universe,and i was shocked when i heard that both,the actress of ciri and yennefer, wasn't aware of the Role that they were playing. I can imagine the pressure that those 2 actress have on their shoulders. All in all a must watch series for the witcher Franchise Fans, but there is one thing that really get on my nerves, and it is the reason why i only give 9/10 Points. It is because of triss actress. I can't say how much i lovvvveeeeeee triss, it was always my favorite character After geralt, and i have her on the same Spot as ciri,because i really really like ciri and i really really love triss. She is such a sweet, lovely, cute ,handsome, super good looking but also badass character in the witcher games. I can just repeat myself to infinity at how much i love this character. But when i saw her for the first time in the series, i was just soooooooo disappointed. Yes, i know that in the books she has brown hair, but i didn't liked the actress at all. I'am sorry but she just looked like a 53 years old Lady and for me she was so unsympathetic, and her look, i didn't liked how she looked at all, the face Impression just made her so unsympathetic. It was really hard for me to accept her in the series. I'am sorry for the actress, but they should have choosed a much better actress than her, an actress that looked more like triss from the games, because 80% of the People Knows the witcher from the games. I would like to see triss with red hair in the series, so that the actress looks more like her. Entertaining!Henry cavill was perfect as geralt!Amazing music whole season!Great acting by henry,freya,the queen and anya they were amazing!story was way too complex it was hard to keep track at start it was too fast paced!episode 1 wasEntertaining!Henry cavill was perfect as geralt!Amazing music whole season!Great acting by henry,freya,the queen and anya they were amazing!story was way too complex it was hard to keep track at start it was too fast paced!episode 1 was amazing but i felt the origin simply was good but whatever it was it was amazing the fight and action in this episode and last 2 episodes were damn awesome!episode 3 was shockingly awesome the timeline aspect was great until then i felt it was all same timeline!some episodes felt little off the tracks as there theme changed but the destiny thing was bind at last and episode 7 was amazing as hell the end was satisfying the meeting and the music it was amazing waiting for season 2 hope they give little time to settle the fast paced story and theme!overall amazing entertaining action adventurous season!… Expand

Я не являюсь прям фанатом игры The Witcher, но даже мне бросилось в глаза: "Какой идиот занимался кастингом актёров"? Заметно, что создатели ни игру не видели, ни книгу не читали! Ну либо это такая толерантность в действии. Я ещё могу принятьЯ не являюсь прям фанатом игры The Witcher, но даже мне бросилось в глаза: "Какой идиот занимался кастингом актёров"? Заметно, что создатели ни игру не видели, ни книгу не читали! Ну либо это такая толерантность в действии. Я ещё могу принять Цири как какую то плюшку, но Енифер как индианку... это перебор! Тем более весь смысл этой "Енифер" сверкать сиськами направо и налево.

En tant que fan de la première heure des jeux vidéo et des livres, tu prends un peu peur au moment de lancer le premier épisode de la série The Witcher... et il m'a fallu une bonne demi-heure pour me convaincre qu'en fait, "ça pouvait leEn tant que fan de la première heure des jeux vidéo et des livres, tu prends un peu peur au moment de lancer le premier épisode de la série The Witcher... et il m'a fallu une bonne demi-heure pour me convaincre qu'en fait, "ça pouvait le faire".

Et bien force est de constater que oui, l'adaptation télévisuelle est réussie. Imparfaite, certes ! Contenant quelques libertés par rapport aux livres, également, mais rien d'outrageant, et puis l'adaptation sur un nouveau support permet ce genre de fantaisies.

Il n'en reste pas moins quelques moments... "meh ?". De petites facilités scénaristiques et autres contorsions temporelles probablement pas aidées par la magie du montage. En dehors de ça, rien qui ne donne pas envie aux amateurs de fantasy de repartir pour une nouvelle saison.… Expand
