Liked it a lot. It's not perfect but very very good. The acting was great, especially liked Henry's Geralt and Yennefer :)

I'm a huge fan of the Witcher. I play Gwent regularly. I've read the some of the books. I've played all of the games. However, this show is still pretty mediocre. Odd pacing. Most parts fairly unenjoyable and unnecessarily drawn out. Anytime Geralt is on the screen it's an enjoyable adventure. I found myself skipping ahead to get back to the parts with him in it.

But even if you ignore that, the casting and actors arent that great either, mostly very bad actually. The actors playing Yennefer and Geralt are the best, yet they cant really save this series from mediocrity, and even if they are good actors, they were still badly cast. Geralt simply doesnt look like He-Man, like this actor does.

The writing is bad, too. You feel as if youre dropped into a hot pot of stuff you have to know but dont know. Especially if youre not great with names this will confuse you a lot at the start.

You never get a feeling of epicness like in the games or books. It feels childish and cheap, best comparable to Hercules or Xena. Even though it uses a lot of nudity and gore. They think (judging from the sad music) that you feel for this or that character, that this or that character dies, yet you dont feel anything for them, because the series never establishes their character well and makes the dialogues very weird and awkward, unnatural. Its worse than on The Walking Dead. The story feels extremely rushed, as if they try to explain the whole Witcher universe in just a few hours. Maybe it should have had 24 episodes instead of just 8. But I guess thats just signs of the time. Characters and their personalities arent important anymore, because we live in a very anti-social time because people are mostly sitting at home, not having much social interaction anymore - and thats me saying, who isnt really the biggest social interactive person either.

The jokes are unfunny, mostly because you cant really build up a relationship to the characters because of the reasons I already mentioned.

People comparing this to Game of Thrones have obviously never watched Game of Thrones. I cried like a baby many times when people died in GoT or something bad happened to them. Here I dont even flinch.
Its like comparing a Lada to a Maybach.
I get that some people are starved for a fantasy series after the end of GoT, but this is in no way a substitute.

Oh yeah, and the excessive use of colored contact lenses (sometimes they wear them, sometimes they dont, sometimes they are not centered, sometimes they are) also add to the childishness of this series. It looks completely unbelievable. Directors should know that in the age of 4K resolution.

Lots of good stuff in this series. Superman is perfect as Geralt. The actress who plays Yennefer is rad, she pulls it off. The Witcher season 1 was an interesting ride if you ask me. Of course, some parts would leave you wondering. You can't understand some parts of the series. You literally can't understand most of the plot going on unless you had prior knowledge of the continent. Most would say to read the books, but maybe season 2 would clear things up, who knows?

And for all those who are comparing it the Game of Thrones, just stop. Just because you love Game of Thrones it doesn't mean that you have to hate The Witcher. I was not that dragged into Game of Thrones after watching it's first few episodes.

Some also commented on how terrible it is when compared to the book. I never read any of the books but this series seems quite nice to me. Maybe when you compare this to the books, this might seem as absolute garbage.

Without having played the games and without having read the books, I can honestly say that The Witcher was pretty interesting from the start.

I'm not normally a 'down with professional critics' guy. I have a lot of respect for criticism as a profession, but I think enough critics got this one plain wrong that I needed to speak up. I have a lot of respect for criticism as a profession, but I think enough critics got this one plain wrong that I needed to speak up. This is a good show. Not an amazing show, but a solid one. I actually really liked what they did with different time periods in the storytelling. It creates a little confusion, but in my experience a good kind of confusion that eventually leads to an 'A-ha!' of realization. The only criticism there is that the writing does sometimes struggle to convey not the time period, but the passage of time, leading to some whiplash as we move through each character's story.

Cavill's depiction of Geralt is really good. I was skeptical of his casting, and really skeptical after seeing early promotional set photos, but in the end I was really impressed. Of the two other key roles, I thought Anya was pretty good in the early parts of the story where Yennefer is still unsure of herself, but struggles to muster the charisma of peak Yen. Freya as Ciri does a solid job with what she is called on to do, but her part isn't as demanding so far. Of the rest of the cast, I thought the real standout was Jodhi May, really knocking that character out of the park at different parts of her story.

Other things that spring to mind are that the CGI is pretty 'meh' throughout, occasionally threatening to derail the experience. Dialogue writing is competent throughout, and better than that in places. Fight choreography seemed like a solid B+ to me. Cinematography was consistently very good, often striking without foolishly trying to reproduce Wild Hunt's amazing visuals.

On the whole, I found it to be very compelling, and solid across the board, despite being a very ambitious show.

In addition to the many many people who don't know either. No matter which group you come from, some elements of this show will disappoint you. Henry Cavill did a great job as Geralt. There was a large focus on Anya Chalotra as Yennifer and her roll was really well acted. She has leading lady stuff. Joey Batey as Jaskier (or Dandelion) was just annoying and kinda miscast. There was a lot of noise about Anna Shaffer being miscast as Triss. She is a different interpretation of the character. You don't really see enough of her to know either way.
Overall if it was a new property, everyone would be raving about how good it is, and how it clearly has the potential to get better. I'd say it's just pretty good. I agree it has potential to improve.
Two elements really stuck out to me. Occasional "modern" dialogue thrown in, to appeal to the audience (jarring. Fail). Also the characters relative ages over time. Ignoring that was annoying.
Overall though the main thing is they just didn't trust the audience to stay around. So all the stories feel rushed. They would be better if the show was longer and the stories were allowed to breath more. That one is on the directors and the show runners. Hopefully they've learned their lesson by next season.

Sometimes I feel like I enjoy stuff more than the "anti-woke/gamer" crowd because I'm not holding these "probably not gamers, probably not Witcher-book reading" production teams and actors to incredibly high standards. Not excusing the boring parts, there are some of those, but I just came for a story set in a world where there are monsters, where the men are sometimes worse than the monsters.. and our friend Geralt of Rivia, of course:

The people mad at the show for "not being true to the books" or "being too diverse/woke..." I mean, SURE, whatever, there's some stuff I didn't like too about the casting, but judge them on their performances, not their race. I still really enjoyed binge-watching this though. Though I was sometimes confused about stuff because timeline/plot jump without context sometimes. 0-voting because you hate "woke" & "diversity" can feel like projection from crybabies sometimes. And it's tough adapting "complex on paper" to "more simple on screen," and plus, c'mon folks, it's the FIRST SEASON, JFC..

Critiquing story/plot in the sense that this was probably never ever going to be 100% true to the books is fair, but people need to let up on bashing Netflix just for adding some diversity. I understand that people want to "see themselves" on screen, and that's fair, even if not "accurate." I DO care about the cast being good though, and some people were just kinda alright. Anyways, just letting the reader know ahead of time that tons of the mad people are just being children that wish everything were THEIR conservative, purist tastes.

Played W2 & W3, and a bit of W1, and read only a bit of the first book. I think the professional critics are rating this too low, but there are definitely some things I did not like. Here are things I liked first though:

    -Superman as Geralt
-The actresses that played Renfri, Yennefer & Solaia
    -Geralt & Yen scenes
    -Good dialogue, often funny
-The show's "graphics" are pretty tasty
    -Great atmosphere
    -Some scenes are perfect
    -Feels like good fan-service
-Magic is mostly cool in this show

Okay now what I don't like:

-ONLY 8 EPISODES?! I NEED MY FIX.
-What's with all these NON-GERALT OF RIVIA SCENES? I'M HERE FOR MY BOY!
-Lots of random ass characters getting elevated storywise at the expense of Geralt of Rivia scenes. If you're going to take me away from Geralt of Rivia it should be for Ciri, Yennefer, Triss, Vesemir, etc (the Gang, so to speak), and even then I would rather you quickly come back to Geralt.
-IDK how I feel about the actress that plays Triss. Maybe it's because she looks nothing like the video games though.
-Actually, many characters don't look like how they are depicted in the games, which is gonna annoy people.
-I don't think this is too "new user" friendly. Would recommend this only to the already-initiated.
-Why so much focus on "Nilfgaard bad?"
-Not sure if Yen's main motivation is what it is in the books, but feels kinda random and makes her seem more "traditional" at the expense of her JUST being a powerful woman.
-Yennefer's dress with the cages on the shoulders makes her look skinny, Yennefer is already more of a full-bodied woman in the games
-Not sure if Geralt would ever yell at Dandelion, but that definitely hurt my soul :(
-Ciri's scenes are just awful sometimes, not the actor's fault, but her arc is just kinda boring,
    -"NO" GERALT IN SEASON FINALE
-Some of the characters act stupid, in ways that undermine previous behaviors or just change attitude drastically at certain points.
-Some scenes are kinda bad, ngl, I love CDPR & I'm HEAVILY anticipating next season but yeah, it's rough sometimes.

The show never wants to be any serious and it never actually tries to achieve any depth or nuanced meaning that would elevate it above the usual cheesy sword and sorcery pulp fantasy. The Witcher is more like a 2019 version of Xena or Hercules. It's an anachronism that acts like Game of Thrones and other groundbreaking TV shows in the past 10 or 20 years never happened and that shows like Xena or Stargate were still the pinnacle of great TV entertainment. The show can only be seen as naive fun but not as anything with a serious message or story. It's only fitting that its budget seems to be severly limited, resulting in poor costumes, ridiculously poor attle scenes, completely unbelievable medieval weaponry and fighting and bad CGI and special effects.

The Netflix adaption also shows no respect and has no understanding of its own source material. It lacks all the core strings of the novels, like the Slavic melancholia, its nuanced but very down to earth dialogues, its lifelike and nuanced characters, its complex political and societal elements, and most important, everything about Geralt's and Ciri's relationship and the true meaning of destiny. It only adds to the the show's mediocrity that it has a terrible "telling instead of showing" habit that results in bad dialogues and many repetitions. The show also only rarely cares to show its characters motivations. They just act because they plot needs them to act in a certain way.

If the prospect of a shallow pulp fantasy show with the flair of the old cheesy sword&sorcery series of the 1990s and early 2000s the Witcher might be exactly your kind of thing. Or maybe you only want the characters from the games be part in a series? Have fun watching it, it won't do you any harm. Anybody looking for a deep and nuanced show that builds upon everything that happend in the genre in the past 10 years or a show that transports the core elements of its source material should maybe skip and watch something else - or just (re-)read Andrzej Sapkowski's fantastic novels.

The show is incredible! It isn't without its flaws and there are a few questionable casting choices, but it's still a great watch. Ultimately, Henry plays the role of Geralt splendidly and as a fan of the games, I was not disappointed.

It's a good fantasy show, but a very bad adaptation. Netflix wanted to push their ethnic quota on The Witcher, and replaced several established white characters in the book with actors of colour. If you read the books, you'll know that making Fringilla black doesn't make sense in the story. Dark elves don't exist in the world of The Witcher. Even Zerrikanians should be of arabic ethnicity, which makes sense, but not black.
Why do they always ruin a good story by pushing political correctness? This show is literally The Witcher in America.

Even the dwarves are a joke. They should be strong, small, but big. But in the show, they're literally human dwarves who can't even carry a sword.

They've made the world of "The Witcher" totally inconsistent. I'm a big fan of the books, I didn't play the games, but I'm really disappointed in the show. It doesn't do justice to the books at all.

I expected a lot more from the series. He expected that he would narrate the book well, or at least close to it.
Instead, I got a disgusting plot, disgusting scenery and disgusting actors who do not know how to play their roles. It was necessary to shoot a normal series, and not to shoot a series in which they are trying to please someone. I am disappointed

The Cast is incredible Henry Cavill IS Geralt, Yennefer is turning into a badass sorceress, the scenery is top noch, the timeline can be confusing but it All comes together perfectly in episode 8. It nails the time perfectly, the characters are very well realised and have a lot of depth. Henry Cavill in particular blew me away. I wasn’t his biggest fan going into this series, but I’m now fully convinced of his actor chops! Despite other reviews comments to the contrary, I found the series three interwoven time lines quite easy to follow as though there may not be “YEARS LATER” printed on the screen in big obnoxious letters, there’s always some visual or script clue to lead you into the scene in a subtle - but unmissable way if you’re actually watching it properly! It wasn’t remotely difficult to follow - and for me at least, worked really well narratively when we get to see some familiar events unfold from a fresh perspective. Thoroughly enjoyed the series, I only bumped it from a perfect score because I’m genuinely impatient for more! Cannot wait for season 2, 3 and beyond. If you’ve even a passing interest in The Witcher, give it ago - hopefully you’ll be as pleasantly surprised as I was! Expand

Series had some weakness, but still a good series has a lot of potential to be great. Starts out slow with confusing story lines but need a lot of YouTube to understand it. Or rewatch the series to truly appreciate it. Critic reviews are stupid, critics are bought out by big companies. Pay attention to fan reviews and user reviews.

Perhaps this show is drawing in people who love soap opera's posing as fantasy and thus the discrepancy between viewers comments and critics. I love fantasy, and good storytelling. This is poorly made. Henry Cavill is great but miscast here. Sets too clean and boring. My disbelief was not suspended. Racial inclusiveness is important but at the cost of good storytelling? I am happy to say that I was wrong in all my worries. Henry Cavill is amazing as Geralt. He nails the voice and overall feel of Geralt. He is easily the best part of the show. The rest of the characters are well rounded for the most part, and the acting is very good. Coming up next would be the cinematography and look of the show. Much of the time, it has a very dark and dreary feel to it, but it fits the story well. The visual effects are pretty good as well, especially the magic effects. The fight scenes are some of the best I've ever seen in a tv show. Last, but certainly not least, is the quality of the music. Besides the awesome "Toss a Coin to your Witcher" song, the more dramatic themes and songs are amazing to listen to.
While I enjoyed my time with this show a great deal, there were one or two things that I feel could have been done better. The biggest problem that I noticed right from the first episode, was the quality of the creature's visual effects. Whether pure CGI, costume, or practical, the majority of them just didn't look high quality. The only other problem I found, especially in the earlier episodes, was the timeline. It was a bit hard to follow due to the lack of notation on screen as to what specific time line I was watching at a given time.
Overall, this is a great show for anybody that likes medieval style fantasy. It can be a bit hard to follow at times, and some of the effects are sort of cheesy looking, but I believe the acting, fight scenes, and general aesthetic, more than make up for these small short comings. I am looking forward for season two.

Overall this is very well written but newcomers to the series will find it hard to grasp the timelines and relationships between characters in the first few episodes. Overall the writing is good and only improves as the timeline becomes clearer and story arcs begin to converge.
Henry Cavill is perfect as Geralt of Rivia, an absolutely spot on, flawless performance of what i hope will become an iconic character. Other characters have peaks and troughs. Joey Batey as Jaskier (Dandelion) captures his character perfectly, but we don't see enough of him as the show progresses. Anya Chalotra as Yen starts strong, dips in the middle and improves again towards the end. Freya Allen as Ciri leaves a lot to be desired, and the character is difficult to like as a result (which will be a problem if she is to be a focus going forward). Some characters are completely lackluster (Triss and Fringilla to name a few).

Fans of the books and games will also be quick to point out the changes in certain characters appearances, which isn't a problem in and of itself, but the actors they have hired just simply cant capture the essence of the characters they are trying to portray.

Overall this is a great first season that has plenty of room to grow in a fantasy world rich with stories to be told. Realistically its an 8 out of 10, but I have given it a 10 to help offset some of the ridiculously reviews by those obsessed by the books/games.

After watching all Episodes in their entirety, I can say the show can at times feel a little off pace here and there, but that is to be expected when introducing a whole new generation or two of people to a world of characters and themes, so that can easily be forgiven. As the series progresses the story becomes more gripping and the characters draw you in, they have an inexorable ability to surprise you with things that you didn't expect even if you know the books/games/characters well (Geralt Grunts abound!) I think any open minded Dark Fantasy fan will find a good time here and even some skeptics might be swayed if if they give the show its proper due, unlike some shoddy ET writers did...All in all a great starting point and I look forward to the next season in 2021! The show may be hard to follow if you are new to the Witcher universe, but it does become more clearer the further you go into the season. Some terrible casting choices (ie. Yennefer, Triss), and some low production value at times. However, overall it is an interesting and joyful watch, that tries to stay true to the source material. Henry Cavill stands out and does justice to the role of Geralt.

If there is one thing that the vast majority of these reviews online have made me realize, it is that most critics are really quite terrible, uninspired, and poor at their craft... if you could call it craft at all. Some of the reviewers here are quite honestly just lazy. I don’t know who pays them, but I sure as hell wouldn’t. Some of the reviewers here are quite honestly just lazy. I don’t know who pays them, but I sure as hell wouldn’t. Also, as for a large portion of the online users who cry out about other races of people in the show... you do realize it’s a fantasy series and there certainly could be black people anywhere in a fantasy series? The nerve of these people. As for the show, it’s pretty good. Kind of like Merlin crossed with GoT. It could be a little better, but it’s really quite enjoyable. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When will any streamer, or for that matter any network at all create a show that has fantasy in reality structure and not based on a series of books which cannot ever be plowed into a reasonably watchable scripted series. Such is the case with The Witcher, an uneven oft times annoying treatment of the video game and subsequent books that came before it. A usually loquacious and amiable Henry Cavill is relegated to grunting monosyllabic answers and surly undertones. The storyline is a wandering mishmash of "you're supposed to already know the language and dialogue and dialects of the inhabitants of The Witcher milieu" tropes. I wanted to like the series, but again I was both annoyed and disturbed by the lack of great storytelling this kind of material needs. And lets not forget the Bard who makes his appearance in episode 2, to the dismay of both and Gerald of Rivia and everyone else I have canvassed. Come on Netflix, lets dispense with this adaptation of novels and video games and give some real show runner creators a chance to create something totally original and geared towards an audience that is hip, smart, and waiting for you and Amazon and Apple TV and Hulu and Peacock and everyone see to step up to the plate.(At least Amazon tried to do this with Carnival row, which I am sad to say was also a miss the mark presentation) the Wticher, for all its video game and novel appeal is a distinct disappointment. The best series of the year (in my opinion) from Netflix. Well-crafted characters, incredible locations and a dedicated cast.
Netflix spared no effort and I can't wait for the next seasons!

The Witcher is a messy tangle of plotlines in a world underdeveloped to the point of obscurity.

As a mindless fantasy rollercoaster, Geralt’s journey is five stars all the way to tea-time. Sadly, for those who like brains with their brawn, it may be more of a slog.

It takes a while for viewers to learn how these characters are connected, via an exasperating Westworld-esque narrative knot that takes much of the season to unfurl. ... The Witcher heightens our confusion by fumbling details that would have helped it set a cohesive tone. Dialogue vacillates, from line to line, between theatrical fantasy-speak and modern colloquialisms (“Dragons are, in fact, a thing!”).
