Terry Wogan has become famous from his commentaries on the Eurovision Song Contest for the BBC, a role he has had since the 1971 Contest. Despite being host, he still managed to provide the commentary for the 1998 Contest. The 1998 Contest saw the beginning and the end for some rules. Firstly, this was the final year to have a language restriction on the songs whereby they could only sing in one of their national languages. The judging system was completly revolutionised. Though the scoring stayed the same, the winners were now decided through a mass tele-vote, whereby anyone across Europe could vote for their favourite song, except for their own country's entry. This was also the last year which saw an orchestra present to accompany the acts. The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia had their debut appearance, and Belgium, Finland, Israel, Romania and Slovakia all returned after they were ineligible to compete in the 1997 Contest due to poor results. However, five other nations had to take their place and sit the 1998 Contest out. These nations were Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denmark, Russia and Iceland. There were twenty-five acts in total. The final verdict will always be remembered as one of the closest to not finish in a tie, whereby with one nation yet to cast their votes, three nations were in the position to win.
