The DOOM guy is back, and he’s pissed. Brutal, uber-violent and adrenaline-pumping, the reboot of one of the most iconic games of the ‘90s is a truly excellent game. The gameplay blends “old-school” and “new-school” mechanics in such a way that it actually paves a new road for the entire FPS genre. The built-in editor SnapMap is the cherry on top, something that will allow gamers to keep playing DOOM in the upcoming months. Unfortunately, the multiplayer is not that inspired, and probably the weakest part of the package.- The Games Machine

DiRT 4 relies heavily on its own procedural editor, and it shows in the long run, when you start to recognize and react to the different building blocks. Nonetheless, it's a pretty fine racing game, one that is extremely fun and addictive.- The Games Machine

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is a true gem in our gaming world, blending two very different universes and creating a deep turn-based tactical game that is both funny and weird. We can only hope that this is the beginning of a new franchise.- The Games Machine

Codemasters has succeeded in perfecting an already spectacular driving model, making it more reactive and enjoyable, launching DiRT Rally 2.0 towards the throne of the best rally game ever. Launching, at day one, without events on the snow, the title is missing a fundamental piece. Apart from that, this is now the most refined rally simulator on the market.- The Games Machine

Ni no Kuni 2 improves over its predecessor in almost every way: it's more polished, the gameplay is more refined and has a good pace, and the story would look good in a Studio Ghibli production. Ni no Kuni 2 is an absolute joy to watch and to play, it's deep yet not complicated, and a true and genuine JRPG.- The Games Machine

Despite a good general quality, it's our duty to report that this remastered is just a direct porting of the cheapest PC version, without any addition: beware before you spend your money on it.- The Games Machine

Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX is the n-th collection of the series. As usual, it's completely useless if you're a long time fan, but totally worth it if you want to catch up before Kingdom Hearts III.- The Games Machine

Do you like the Anno series? You'll also love Anno 117: Pax Romana. The city builder stays perfectly on the trajectory of its predecessors, with a few improvements that add gameplay options without, however, offering anything substantially different from the usual. The real star of this game is the user interface, at once simple, elegant, and super efficient: all management games should take it as their absolute model. It's a shame that the campaign story has one of the most anticlimactic endings I've ever seen.- The Games Machine

OlliOlli World is one of the best platformers of recent years, a spectacular interpretation of the skate genre and, in general, a very fun, serene game, as relaxing as it is competitive, as spiritual as it is consistent and muscular.- The Games Machine

The rebirth of a great classic to be enjoyed until the last drop thanks to an exceptional replayability, a script that is never banal and a thousand other reasons. Graphically more could have been done, but Square Enix's mission is still accomplished.- The Games Machine

Two Point Museum is not surprising, but it is convincing all the same. The developers have been working on this series for many years now, and the results are visible, especially in a campaign that manages to keep players interested, avoiding the risk of tying us into a too rigid cycle of identical levels. The theme of museums is less entertaining than hospitals and university campuses, but otherwise this iteration of the franchise also enjoys a granite solidity with regards to the room and workforce management mechanics.- The Games Machine

BALL x PIT takes the simple mechanics of a brick-breaker like Ballz and transforms them into an explosive roguelite RPG. Between twin-stick shooter action, Vampire Survivors-style power-ups, and surprisingly deep city building, each playthrough becomes a whirlwind of frenetic action and strategic planning. Unlocking new powers, fusing abilities, and upgrading your base is an irresistible gameplay loop, enhanced by beautifully crafted biomes and bullet hell battles against ruthless bosses. Kenny Sun once again proves his ability to transform simple ideas into brilliant and engaging experiences.- The Games Machine

System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster reintroduces the legendary mix of first person shooter, survival horror and role-playing game. It offers a large map to explore, full of interconnected paths and dangers to eliminate with weapons, psionic powers and hacking techniques. The research system adds tactical depth, allowing you to analyze enemies in order to increase their vulnerability. On the technical side, the remaster enhances the experience of the original with targeted refinements such as updated resolution, mod support, fifty achievements and cross-play co-op modes. The magic that made the game a cornerstone is still alive, even if some gameplay mechanics are starting to show their age.- The Games Machine

If you already devoted a conspicuous amount of time on the previous game in the series, you'll have to be patient, and wait for the real fun to begin, since all the new (and good) stuff is carefully handed out bit by bit. Therefore, we recommend Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon only if you skipped the previous two titles. Or if you have a bone to pick with Necrozma.- The Games Machine

Shin Megami Tensei V manages to improve on a supposedly perfect combat system by introducing new options that offer a welcome extra level of complexity. The storyline is a little less convoluted than usual, and the graphics engine struggles at times, but the end result is a truly impossible-to-drop RPG and one of the most successful exponents of the genre on Switch.- The Games Machine

Octopath Traveler 0 is not only an ambitious bridge between past and present, but Square Enix's most mature attempt to reconcile the mobile nature of the original project with the expectations of a JRPG for home consoles. Its monumental structure, the dark, melodramatic, and uncompromising narrative, and the richness of its strategic mechanics deliver an experience that, while stemming from a gacha title, manages to establish itself as an authentic and significant chapter in the series. It's a long, at times challenging journey that requires patience and dedication, but one that rewards with a sense of growth, community, and discovery that is rare even in the modern landscape of the genre. Octopath Traveler continues to represent one of the most consistent and passionate interpretations of the classic JRPG.- The Games Machine

F1 2021 incorporates (and improves) all the features of the previous F1 games developed by Codemasters. Driving is fun and can be adapted to suit both newbies and those looking for a sufficiently complex experience, although players who look for a full simulation might be slightly disappointed. Game modes are numerous, varied and well structured. Both those who love to run alone and those who prefer to compete with (or against) other players will find something that will keep them busy for months.- The Games Machine

The Journey and the Frostbite engine are the two big innovations of FIFA 17. The game is enjoyable in most of the offline modes; conversely, if you are a multiplayer gamer you should beware of the excessive use of skill moves and dribblings from other players, too often decisive in the economy of the matches.- The Games Machine

The Case of the Golden Idol is an excellent debut. Color Gray has learned the lesson of Return of the Obra Dinn and reinterpreted it with its own style. The cases to be solved are well thought out and to come to grips with puzzles that require deduction and intelligence rather than skill with the classic mechanics of the genre is quite satisfying. The Latvian developer duo in his first game shows they have personality, including in the graphic style that does not mind being disturbing and in the appropriate background music, all of which conveniently mystery-themed.- The Games Machine

It’s hard to say if What the Golf? is crazier or funnier. This game made by five guys from Denmark rebuilt the concept of golf using cows, furniture and gravity in a bunch of mini-levels that never stop to amaze. I really can’t remember a game leaving me in awe every 15 seconds, only thanks of the lovable absurdity of the ideas it introduces.- The Games Machine

Albeit some polishing issues and some questionable design choices, Salt and Sanctuary is a nice, bidimensional variation of the "souls-like" formula, with influences from Hidetaka Miyazaki and from the metroidvania genre. If you like a challenging, punishing yet rewarding experience, you should definitely give it a try.- The Games Machine

Like a Formula 1 car, Forza Motorsport has quite radically rethought its set-up to reduce the gap to its rivals. The new career introduces RPG components designed to increase the bond between the player and their vehicles: the fleet of vehicles is still large, but the focus has shifted to the customization of performances. The manual calibration of difficulty and aids makes it suitable for any type of player, offering in any case an intriguing challenge thanks to the AI of the drivatars. Visually it's impressive, but there's still something missing to match the realism of GT.- The Games Machine

The Castlevania Advance Collection is a fine piece of game preservation, collecting three good games and a half-assed dud thrown in for good measure. Joking aside, the games haven't aged as well as the NDS trilogy, but put together they make a must-have package for fans of the Belmont family.- The Games Machine

Blasphemous 2 is the maximum evolution of a video game that, in the past, mildly surprised the critics but entered the hearts of the players. If with the first chapter there was a lot, perhaps too much uncertainty, the second iteration of the franchise has instead totally evolved the entire play system, proposing a poignant story. With a pixel art that fills the screen, coloring it with vivacity, Blasphemous 2 is also a beautiful sight from an artistic point of view. What else to say about game design? Evolved, mature and concrete. In a hot, very hot summer in which video games are demonstrating ever higher standards, the second iteration of the most blasphemous franchise ever could not be missing from the appeal. Sin awaits you.- The Games Machine
