The Escapists doesn’t quite reach the heights of The Shawshank Redemption’s emotion, relationships between characters or interesting story to tie everything together, but it does create an engaging and noteworthy experience that should be played by all.

Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions is a near perfect game let down only by the demanding mission padding and a soundtrack that represents a slight step backwards from its predecessors.

A little refinement could have gone a long way for Citizens of Earth, but without that extra touch, it’s not so much EarthBound as it is grounded.

Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth1 is a much better game than Hyperdimension Neptunia, but it’s still let down by several failings and issues that probably throw up enough barriers for anyone outside of its niche to feel comfortable enough in staying away from it.

Whether you choose to perceive it through a moral lens or not, there’s a great tactical survival mechanic driving this game beneath the didactics. Although the events it depicts are depressing to contemplate at length, I found myself coming back again and again to try and get it right somehow, beat the odds, and save my people.

From the little tweaks like the menu being cleaner and more responsive, to the adding of modes that are useful and not superfluous, Rocksmith 2014 is as excellent a prospect that it could ever have been. So if you are interested in picking up a guitar for the first time and can’t afford tutoring, it is really hard to not recommend a purchase here.

The Talos Principle will make you feel confounded but in that wonderful way that precludes an epiphany. You’ll leave each session feeling genuinely smarter – and perhaps a little rebellious to boot.

Ultimately, LittleBigPlanet 3 is a pretty decent effort which lamentably hamstrings itself. It’s charming, aesthetically pleasing, and a lot of fun when it works – but various bugs and glitches, long load times, and a lacklustre story mode really drag it down.

It’s certainly not a joke game, and the writing quality does elevate it for those who have an appreciation of the material that is being targeted, but the whole combat mechanic becomes so tiresome so quickly that you can’t help but wish the game could have been shorter, the story more focused, instead of the more positive elements of the game losing some of their sheen from hiding behind the rest of it.

What has been proven with The Walking Dead: Season Two is that Telltale tell great tales.

Monopoly Family Fun Pack has been poorly marketed, poorly targeted and poorly executed, to the point where we’re not entirely sure why this package exists. You can find fun on the classic board in Monopoly Plus, but at that point it just seems better to be playing on the physical game board.

As 2014 draws to a close, Inquisition is a contender not only for game of the year, but for the best title to come out of BioWare’s impressive stable - either way, it’s an essential purchase for any RPG fan.

No-one expects Tearaway levels of interaction anymore, especially not when there is also potential PlayStation TV integration to consider, but every physical interaction with The Muppets Movie Adventures feels more like a progression blocker than fun.

In short, it’s a mixed bag which is unlikely to appeal to any but the most curious of SRPG fans, but those who are prepared to give it a chance will be rewarded with a genuinely interesting game, unlike anything else currently on the market.

It’s not going to surpass Rock Band as the de facto music party game, neither is it going to save Kinect. But, as a potential swansong to Microsoft’s neglected camera, Fantasia: Music Evolved is more than worthy.

Falling Skies: The Game does, at least, play as it is supposed to; there don’t appear to be any glitches, and you’ll probably enjoy the first few missions. After that, however, it rapidly wears thin.

There’s a thin line between rock-hard gameplay and a broken game and while Natural Doctrine runs up to that line repeatedly it manages to never actually cross it. What it does manage, however, is to be a great example of the genre while also doing very little to bring it into the twenty-first century.
