Bulletstorm proves once again that shooters don't have to be dull, serious, overly long and grey. What we have here is a perfectly put together mix of linear action, notable setpieces and decent gunplay that is simply a joy to experience. You won't be climbing towers to unlock hunting missions, car races and assassinations. Instead you'll be wading through an army of enemies all seemingly eager to die in a myriad of silly ways and smiling every step of the way.

Powerhoof have managed to tweak and refine a game that executes on an intriguing premise. It can be a little hard to follow but, with a group of friends, it’s difficult not to buy into the chaos. The hard turns are what this game seems to deliver well and, whilst the AI can provide some capable sparring partners, this game is best served in the company of others.

Kero Blaster is a surprisingly enjoyable game to play despite looking retro to a fault. The graphics and excellent music work together perfectly to give the game a style not much seen nowadays. While this graphical style may not be to everyone’s liking, happily the core running and gunning is tight and it is this aspect which will keep you coming back for more.

Has-Been Heroes is just not a great game as it has very complex and confusing controls and a battle system which feels punishing and difficult. There are far better roguelikes out there and Has-Been Heroes just doesn’t have the chops to make it a worthwhile purchase.

Snow Moto Racing Freedom offers a decent snow based arcade racer. There’s a good amount of content, local multiplayer for up to four people as well as online multiplayer. Unfortunately it lacks polish, the snow covered tracks all look the same and the racing isn’t exciting enough to make up for it.

Rain World is a sluggish platformer with copious instant death situations and infrequent checkpoints. These factors all add up to a game which isn’t fun or easy and seems to actively frustrate any understanding of whats going on. Whilst the art style and interesting setting can pull you in, that alone isn’t enough to keep you coming back for more punishment.

Yooka-Laylee is a fun retro styled 3D platformer with the buckets of wit and charm that made Rareware games so much fun to play, but along for the ride is a somewhat combative camera system that occasionally gets in the way. If you can overcome this then Yooka-Laylee is an excellent trip down memory lane for fans of Banjo-Kazooie and similar titles.

Free from the restrictions of franchises LEGO City Undercover has flourished into a really enjoyable and very funny game. The open world is a ton of fun to play with and the addition of a co-op mode adds a whole new dynamic to this game. LEGO City Undercover manages to succeed in the rarest of things and has successfully created an enjoyable open world.

Blackwood Crossing garnered a genuine emotional response courtesy of some considered writing and smart pacing. Whilst short, this tale is certainly memorable with a likeable star pairing. I felt engrossed and I’m glad I’ve seen it through. If the asking price might seem a bit steep, keep an eye on it. This is definitely worth playing.

Flying Bunny brings a mix of shoot ’em up action and Flappy Bird trickiness to the PS4. While it plays like a mobile game, there is some simple arcadey fun to be had before the difficulty spikes and starts taking the fun out of it.

The Inner World is a thoroughly enjoyable adventure game. The art style is distinct and the story is both funny and engaging. The puzzles are typical to the genre but the hint system will allow everyone to see the end of it. Some minor technical issues are the only things that stop this from scoring higher.

Punch Club is a unique fighter management game with a great sense of humour and plenty of ’90s style. The gameplay, addictive as it is, becomes punishingly slow and repetitive. They say MMA is a big cause of brain trauma but after many hours with this game, my brain feels like Chuck Liddell has been using it as a speed bag.

Snake Pass is a fascinating take on the 3D platforming genre. It features conventional progression and collectables with a non-conventional control scheme that seeks to test your mettle and dexterity. The game takes a step away from Indie-brand self-reference and expositional stories to present a unique gaming experience that feels incredibly rewarding to master. We can only hope for more, as this tale of Noodle and Doodle is heaped with oodles of charm.

Nightmares from the Deep 2: The Siren’s Call is a decent hidden object puzzle game and is pretty good at what it does. It has also improved on aspects of the earlier games by adding some much needed puzzle variety. This game is not going to appeal to everyone, but it does a great job of being a decidedly casual style of game to appeal to a more casual audience.

Anoxemia has a great sense of atmosphere with an interesting plot but the whole package seems to lack a little punch. Exploration is fun to partake in and, whilst your objectives rarely stray from collecting things, there’s a certain enjoyment to be had from adventuring deep, down underwater. That might prove enough for some who fancy a shorter, more forgiving experience.

This Is the Police is an intriguing story with a decent simulation game to back it up. There is a lot of game here which unfortunately can’t keep things interesting for its whole length. It’s well presented and if it gets its hooks in you then it will keep you occupied for a long time.

Vikings: Wolves of Midgard is a very competent entry to action RPG genre with few caveats. Peppered among the well detailed Norse mythology inspired locales are occasional performance issues and a formulaic story. While notable, these do not detract from a fun and satisfying hack and slash experience. It must be hard to challenge a king of the genre like Diablo, but Vikings: Wolves of Midgard is a brilliant alternative to the Blizzard giant.

Fated: The Silent Oath is a very short experience with limited interaction. The ability to nod and shake your head to communicate with characters is fun and the visuals are appealing but in the short running time I struggled to bond with the characters or get invested in the story. Hopefully a second chapter will improve on things as there is a lot of potential.

Heroes of the Monkey Tavern is retro to a fault. Despite simple graphics, and generic enemy designs, the actual dungeon crawling works really well and there is a great sense of discovery to it. Whilst not without its faults, there is a very enjoyable game.

88 Heroes makes a great first impression with its old-school platforming game mechanics and sense of humour. Ultimately, the gameplay and the jokes wear a little thin but this is still well worth checking out.

When it comes down to it, Chaos Code needed to pick one thing and really excel at it. Instead, they’ve presented an acceptable effort that stands out for all the wrong reasons. There are signs of genuine inspiration – like the ability to customise your character style with unique moves and movement options – but they’re weighed down by the poor port and ultimately confusing presentation. If airdashes are your thing and you’ve got to have them all then you’ll probably have a good time for a few hours, but for everyone else, Chaos Code is nothing more than average.

Styx: Shards of Darkness continues the series with as much enthusiasm as its predecessor, and builds upon what made Master of Shadows work so well - the stealth aspect. The fact that Cyanide Studio didn't pay attention to the negative reports on the combat, and kept the mechanic the same as before is practically the only thing that lets the side down in terms of playability. If you want to have to think about getting from point A to point B, and don't mind getting frustrated at times, then this is easily the best way to spend 15-20 hours.

What you’ll find in Old Time Hockey is a lovingly represented homage to the sport’s yesteryear that is soured by a paltry paring of modes and a challenge which a newcomer like me has found too steep. Take this score with a pinch of salt if you’re experienced and want to see something with a little more personality than the NHL license. Just don’t expect to sink much time into it.

Troll and I is a game whose ambition is deflated by a lack of polish and a worrying absence of player guidance. Combat feels serviceable, if a little unsatisfying, and they find good reasons to switch between the two titular protagonists. There’s an endearing story at play but the game itself has enough issues to stifle the most enthusiastic player. Repercussions from poor execution prevent this from being a truly worthwhile experience.

Touhou Genso Wanderer is a very Japanese, and very average, indie roguelite. As this is in the Touhou universe, the same cast of anime characters appear and this may appeal to some people. However, this does little to stand out from the crowd and is vastly overpriced at launch.

Touhou Double Focus is an okish metroidvania game. It’s not massively long or even deep from a story telling point of view, and the slowdown and average map design weigh heavy on the game. You’re left then with the action to carry you through the three or so hours of game, and unfortunately the action isn’t necessarily up to this limited task.

A Pixel Story promises a tribute to the classic games of yesteryear however falls unfortunately short of that goal. However, it is a competent platformer with solid puzzling mechanics and style. The only problem is, if you have played a few of these before then this may be the one too many.

Eekeemoo: Splinters of the Dark Shard may look good at first glance but it is the ugliest of beasts underneath. If the broken, mashing combat or the uninspired gameplay don’t get you then the horrible, unending repetitive soundtrack will.

Danganronpa 1-2 Reload is a mostly successful conversion of two brilliantly unique visual novel games. The constant plot twists and left-field stories makes these games stand out from the crowd and the murder trials are really unique and enjoyable. If you’ve never played a visual novel game before this is an excellent place to start, and if you’re a Danganronpa veteran this is the definitive package.
