Terror of Hemasaurus is one of those rare indie games that takes an arcade classic as inspiration but improves on it in every imaginable way. The most important being that it's just a ton of fun.

10Tons do it again. Another ace rogue-lite that delivers fun gameplay, addictive upgrading mechanics and a strong loot game. Ignore them at your peril.

Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is another great addition to the Ys series of JRPGs. The gameplay loop does settle in very quickly with some repetitive environments but the combat is superb as always and the new traversal abilities are a lot of fun to use.

Mental illness is always a tough subject to pitch correctly. The Town of Light, to me, does an admirable job with a period tale filled with a bleak series of events. It’s a thought-provoking journey through a truly troubled mind. It might prove upsetting but I do feel this is worth consideration.

Everspace 2 is a fairly polished experience that really feeds the compulsion to find more loot. Space combat is fluid and easy to comprehend, although potentially disorientating. I do find the storytelling can make the characters feel distant from one another but the overall plot had me intrigued. The grand expanse from space has been somewhat segmented but the scale on display is still admirable and there's a cool sci-fi vibe to all of it.

The stuff you want from a THPS 1 and 2 remaster is all here and most of the things you don't want are mercifully missing but after beating the campaign once, the challenge system doesn't really encourage us to keep going. However, this as a remaster of two of the best games ever made and it does a great job.

It may be a little slim on content but time behind the wheel in DiRT Rally 2.0 feels as rewarding as ever. It's gorgeous to look at with a lot of attention paid in the right areas. Some might worry about the always on nature of the servers but hopefully they can remain reliable. There's a solid selection of stages and vehicles and a physics engine which is exquisite. I can only hope they add more to it.

Jesse Makkonen does it again. Distraint 2 continues where the original game left off and keeps the moody presentation and excellent storytelling going. The gameplay doesn't quite live up to the story but when the story is this good, we're happy to let that slide and just enjoy it.

Wasteland 3 is quite buggy in its current state but the gameplay and systems still manage to shine through. With a little more polish this'll be regarded as a classic in the future. Even as it is now it's an incredibly enjoyable experience.

Another polished Artifex Mundi hidden puzzle game with a fairytale twist and added alchemy. A worthwhile way to spend a few hours.

Regalia is a wonderful love letter to JRPGs of yore with beautifully realised graphical style and evocative music. More than worth checking out, our current obsession in fact.

When it comes to modes and features, FIFA 19 merely tweaks the formula rather than going full on Tinkerman with it but if you want an almost perfect simulation of football, EA deliver once again.

A challenging slow burner of a puzzle game that you'll end up being hopelessly addicted to.

Atone: Heart of the Elder Tree is a great hybrid puzzler with rhythm action sections that deserves to be played. The branching storyline is a definite plus, though some of the puzzles are so oblique that you won't have a clue about how to solve them. All-in-all, it's still well worth playing.

Equal parts shoot 'em up and rogue-lite, Sky Force Reloaded feels like a deluxe version of the previous game and that's no bad thing at all but don't expect anything revolutionary this time around.

Cursed to Golf is a wolf in sheep's clothing. Very much a rogue-like with a golfing twist. You might bounce off like many do the Soulsborne games, but you might get hooked like we are too. Unflinchingly tough at times but also gives you hope you might prevail. It's the hope that makes you have another go. Recommended despite being harder than Henry Rollins and Jimmy Nail combined.

Crash Drive 3 is a killer driving-based party game with excellent cross-platform support and a focus on pure enjoyment. A few niggles hold it back though and we can't help feeling a new name and cheaper price would have gained it much more of an audience. But, for now, don't sleep on this one. It's a gem.

Deathloop offers a fun, time bending romp. The story is intriguing and the characters, butterfly effects and abilities are the strong points only hampered by a lot of repetition and the odd technical hitch.

Wreckfest does a good job of mixing racing and damage dealing but doesn't quite live up to the FlatOut heritage and that's mainly because of it favouring realism over fun at times. However, the racing action is very good and the demolition derby events are as good as any of the Demolition Derby games of the past.

F1 2018 remains a competitive racer. The improvements to career mode might not hit all the marks but they do make for a more involved experience. Presentation has been improved with the visuals and audio doing a great job of creating atmosphere whilst the handling appears to have been tightened up to provide a more enjoyable time behind the wheel.

Madden NFL 22 is a good return to form for the series after last year's clunker. The NCAA teams are a good addition as well as confidently implemented PS5 haptics. That said, if you hate American Football, this likely isn't your thing.

By asking both sides of your brain to Super Meat Boy at the same time, Binaries isn’t for the faint-hearted but platforming veterans will have plenty of fun with the game’s many well-designed levels. The one-player co-op style isn’t for everyone though but despite this, some minimalist production values and some very minor technical issues, Binaries’ clever puzzles help the game to really punch above its weight.

Aaero is the mixture of Amplitude, Rez and Gitaroo Man that we never realised we wanted. Taxing gameplay, bold visuals and a bombastic soundtrack combine to make this the best rhythm action title in years.

Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons is a surprisingly clever and fun brawler that manages to add some neat touches to a well-trodden genre. The run-based nature of it gives players plenty of decisions to make and the game is good at giving you options. The pixel aesthetic works well and the action is very easy to read. There's a lot to manage on screen but I find the special attacks provide frequent and effective crowd control. The gameplay is familiar but the new tweaks have been really refreshing.

As a bit of a super fan of the original, Chime is overly familiar while being ever so slightly worse thanks to visual improvements that slightly mar the gameplay at the highest level. The additional modes, and number of levels, offer a fleshed out package though and Chime is still the uncrowned king of the genre as far as we are concerned.
