God Eater 3 was already a great game and the Switch version actually feels like the best way to play it. It runs smooth whether handheld or docked, and the extra content is a bonus. I’d probably go so far as to recommend this over the PS4 version, though if you already own it I wouldn’t implore you to buy it a second time unless Switch is your main console or you want something awesome to play on the commute. Either way, God Eater 3 is a prime example of a Switch port done right.

Clannad on Nintendo Switch is the best version of the game. It has everything the PS4 version offers plus touchscreen controls that work brilliantly. If you’ve never watched or played it before, this is the version to get. Just keep in mind that it is very long even by visual novel standards.

With no other Switch functionality like touchscreens (which, again, would work really, really well here), and with such a horrendous downgrade, it’s really hard to recommend Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden even to people who don’t own the other consoles. If you can get past the visuals, then there’s a great adventure here with a big heart and a compelling story, but I think for many people that’s going to be a big ask.

Sadly, it’s not enough to just look good, and Trine 3 is lacking in several key areas, but it’s still a decent enough romp despite this. A cracking version of a cool game, then, and one that benefits from being on Switch. Play solo in handheld and get your face right in the screen to react to the high-octane gameplay, and dock your console to play co-op (and make sure you get the mech suit because it’s badass). A glorious retro side-scrolling action-shooter, with tight controls, a great look, and excellent boss fights. It’d be nice if it were a bit longer, and many newcomers to the style will be struggling even on easy mode, but hey, you can’t have everything, I suppose.

When you think you’re seeing a render in-game that looks too good for Switch, that’s because essentially a video is playing. Yes, the actual game part is lower resolution, and yes, of course if you can play it on PS4, Xbox One, or PC, you’ll get the better looking experience, but if you are a Switch-only console household then you’re getting a great looking game that sounds amazing, and tells a story with one of the best takes on mental health in a long time. Play it on handheld with headphones and you’ll be shocked, just don’t be surprised if it looks blurry (and sub-HD) on the big screen.

This is definitely a version to avoid unless you absolutely need portable play over everything. The cutbacks across the board are more than what I saw in Dark Souls Remastered on Switch and it has worse audio issues and glitches. The fact remains that Assassin’s Creed III itself hasn’t aged brilliantly compared to other games in the franchise like Black Flag that was on the Wii U and would’ve been a better game to play on the go with a Switch port.

Realistically if you have the choice of which format to get many would plump for the PS4 or Xbox One versions, but I think it’s the Switch version you should plump for, the portability and ease of multiplayer being considerable selling points should you fancy a quick race with a friend. Atelier Lulua is one of the better games in the franchise in recent times. The Switch version is absolutely worth getting if you’ve played the Trilogy (LINK) and wanted a new game to follow those. I’m still annoyed by the lack of an English voice acting option but the fact that this release actually plays very well on Switch even in handheld makes it an easy recommendation. Playing on the Switch feels no different to playing on any other platform, with no console-specific features or controls. As is often the case the Switch version adds nothing to the experience, but the graphical style and lightning pace suit the handheld screen way better than they suit a full-sized TV. As for content, sadly both this version and Resident Evil 0 along with it have arrived onto Switch with no new console specific content. For example, this version doesn’t make use of the motion control functionality that the Switch can provide which means that this version is simply a straight port of the previous remastered versions, and as such my biggest issue is the pricing. My opinion will always be that Resident Evil is absolutely worth playing, however unless the issue of portability is your main driver for choosing this version then you are perhaps better served playing it on another platform.

Thimbleweed Park is the best example of how to handle bringing the genre to Switch. The Switch version of Deponia also has some inconsistency with A and B for selecting.
