Visuals are not everything. But if they are substandard, the mechanics have to make up for them. And if they fail, you have a problem. Almost everywhere you can sense what Dark Shadows is supposed to achieve. But what you feel and see tells a different story.

Sucker Punch plays it safe. Compared to its predecessor there is almost no progress. Of course the visuals are better – sometimes they are plainly brilliant. But at its core it could have been so much more.

Never ever would I have thought that I’d rather play the abysmal Resident Evil 6. This could have been the return to old school survival horror that a lot of fans were hoping for. But in the end the scariest part of Black Soul is the fact that somebody actually was convinced this was ready to be released.

It plays like a heavily modernized Missile Command. But be aware. That this ain’t a fire-and-forget orgy for finger artists but a challenging game where you have to make decisions and try to find a balance between nuclear defensive and offensive measures.

The tablet origins are too obvious. Compared to the likes of Wave Race everything is simplified.

The controls and visuals are okay, the rest plainly isn’t.

An interesting take on the Metroidvania formula enriched with creative time manipulation.

Yes, it might be a little too easy. But the cuteness, the funny ideas and all the hidden collectables are as Yoshi as Yoshi can be.

I wish I could say that this is the better Monster Hunter. But it isn’t. Where Capcom gives you depth and a meaningful daily fantasy business this is merely a collection of fast paced battles against a limited number of enemy types.

The art direction shines, although it could be closer to the source. And even though in local co-op it is as entertaining as any Lego game, the movie conversion can’t hide that mechanically it is merely a risk free collection of everything we got to know over the last few years.

It is not as fascinating as its predecessor. But nonetheless the mechanics of permanent failure are as captivating as always. This is a mysterious, gripping and unforgiving adventure.

Despite HD treatment you’ll realize how old the originals are. But as ugly as it might be on the outside as outright beautiful is the content that is hiding behind the mask.

Fortunately Tower of Guns doesn’t bite off more than it can chew. It delivers a nice mix of arena shooter and rogue like.

The mechanics would work well in a different setting without the license attached. But add to that the ridiculously well captured look, sound & feel of the tv show and you get a nasty, provocative and thoroughly enjoyable roleplaying romp.

This time the screenplay just doesn’t work. But even though this is the weakest episode of the whole series by a mile, it still shows enough “Walking Dead” to be entertaining.

I enjoy 2d-roleplaying a la 16-bit, but here the Portuguese team from Aldorlea Games takes the easy way out. Where other retro developers try to combine old school visuals and mechanics with modern amenities, this is as pure as it gets – and sometimes it just feels old.

Thousands of bugs against eight soldiers: The mix between real time tactics and tower defense has its moments, but the mechanics get stale too soon.

I hate it when I’m right. But games from Farsight can’t seem to show up without bugs or quirk. For example: Who had the idea to exclude worldwide leader boards?

Bloody, brutal – but quite cheap and too linear at times. For fans of the art of boss battles this is an entertaining experience. But outside the arenas Dracula can’t motivate like Metroid Prime, Darksiders or Batman, from which it takes quite a few elements.

On mobile platforms Reaper might be a nice action roleplaying experienced. But a lot of it gets lost in the PC translation that doesn’t reach its potential.
