Not only is the concept unique, the execution is as well. In its best moments you actually feel like you are sitting at a computer terminal in a deserted spaceship trying to navigate the drones on a basis of schematic scanner data. In its not so good moments the path-finding and some other minor flaws destroy the immersion.

Visual Concepts has to be very careful not to overdo it. And I am not talking about the almost flawless mechanics that haven’t changed over the last few years or the modes that have been only marginally tweaked. With all its mechanical brilliance it is a pity that this years’ prime basketball game is merely a vehicle for an abundance of microtransactions that are borderline pay-to-win.

The short solo-campaign is hardly worth talking about, even though the action on the ground and in space is well executed. But the multiplayer makes up for it: The battles are as tactical as they are frantic, the troops have distinctive strengths and weaknesses and you can use the surroundings to your advantage.
