2-Bit Cowboy has a lot of great ideas, but they just never quite pay off.

Asphalt 9: Legends is the best of the series so far. While it may lean a little more toward the casual side of arcade racing, it's still a ton of fun and gorgeous, to boot.

Complaints aside, this is a great-looking game with a compelling storyline, good voice acting and intriguing puzzles. It may not be Monkey Island, but it certainly points the way for iPhone/iPad developers to embrace the best parts of old-school game design.

Battle prehistoric creatures and reunite warriors in Cavemania; a chest-beating, arrow-slinging, tribal adventure packaged in a match-3 strategy puzzle.

This one's a definite battery-drainer and well worth the price. Not counting the possibility of spending more money on credits, of course.

Once players are comfortable with the mechanics, Inertia: Escape Velocity becomes an absolute joy.

Of course, this is a free movie tie-in game, but it is a darn good one.

It's got style, presentation, and plenty of replayability to keep people hooked for as long as they might need the distraction.

Simple to look at and learn, Dandelions: Chain of Seeds is an enjoyable and relaxing game about connecting seeds.

The only thing wrong with Silverfish DX is that there’s already better and more varied versions of the same game out there. Specifically, Geometry Wars—a game that precedes Silverfish by nearly a decade—provides a similar experience in a more robust package. Silverfish DX just strips too many things out of a traditional twin-stick shooter and doesn’t add enough new stuff back to it to make itself stand out.

A totalitarian society of bears is only the tip of the iceberg in this throwback brawler.

Within superb in-game graphics, and an upbeat infamous sega-esque soundtrack to boot, Super Monkey Ball 2 is just one of those games you can pick up and play. I highly recommend it!

While the graphics and lighting are top notch, the rest of the game is a fairly generic dual-stick shooter – not that that's a bad thing.

1000 Heroz's daily task mechanic is what really makes this game stand out, and encourages the kind of long-term play that the strongest iOS games have.

You get to discover that firsthand in Super Mega Worm, and you better believe that they may be onto something.

It's going to take a little bit of time for We Rule to get its server issues under control, but this game has become a solid keeper on my iPod. Anyone who has grown accustomed to the freemium platform will find this game to be a solid entry into the genre.

Maybe with a few more level packs under its belt, Munch Time could be a more compelling purchase. For now though, it's only really worth it for those who have exhausted superior games within the genre.

Space Colors is a well-crafted space shooting game that carries plenty of challenge and a twisted sense of humor.

Shaken or stirred, CounterSpy is simply the best stealth action game to sneak its way onto the App Store.

Yet another excellent addition to Kairosoft's release library. It's familiar, but just different enough to feel unique among the rest. There's no reason why fans shouldn't snap this one up immediately, assuming they haven't already.

While I don't see Crap of Defense winning many game of the year awards, I do think that it is a top notch time waster with a style of its own.

Episode 3 isn't the strongest episode thus far with seemingly all the focus placed on plot progression rather than offering clever puzzles. It'll still keep players interested though and has certainly piqued my interest ready to try Episode 4.

While those who fell squarely on the side of Vlambeer in the Ninja Fishing/Radical Fishing debacle will likely be disgusted by Muffin Knight, there's still an original art theme, engrossing RPG elements, and the fun multiplayer as well.

For the most part, the level design is quite quirky and amusing, however. The difficulty is a rather steep curve later on, but it ramps up to it quite nicely to start. Overall, a positive experience, if perhaps one I felt I've had before in many other occasions.

Carmageddon is an older game, and it shows even on a mobile device, but people don't always love old games purely because they're old. Sometimes they love them because they're fun. And despite the slippery controls, this bit of nostalgia is still very, very fun.

Motley Blocks doesn't quite offer that "just one more go" factor, as it's tricky stuff at times, but it is an interesting take on a tried and tested formula. Albeit, available at a rather pricey $2.99.

I’m getting to the point where I think the casual puzzle game genre is getting a little saturated. It seems a new game comes out every week that attempts to become the next Angry Birds. That being said, I don’t think that Be Together will dethrone the top games out there but I do think that it is a worthy addition to the genre. It has some lovable characters and visually-appealing artwork that makes for a friendly game environment for players of all ages.

Save the city from snow accumulation in this interesting arcade take on a street maintenance activity.

Lost in Space? Nothing helps to solve that problem like a fully-armed space vessel.

LostWinds is a very worthy purchase. It was relatively expensive for its length on the Wii but on the App Store, it fits in nicely. There may be limited replayability once completed, except for those desperate to collect all the Melodia Idols around the game, however the general ambience is warm and enjoyable. It's backed up by some neat wind based mechanics. LostWinds is a fine way to spend some time.

This game is a great bite-sized retro masterpiece with focused gameplay and modes that will fit any gaming occasion. Box Cat's quirky, unrelentingly enjoyable role reversal will keep players crashing this kitty for a long, long time.

Fans of the retro gaming aesthetic have plenty of other worthy places to look for their fix on iOS.

It's a solid effort for Hogrocket, however. It just needs a challenge level re-adjustment to make it truly as great as I suspect it could be.

This may not be the most inventive or unique physics game out there, but it is a strong new entry in genre.

Despite the game's lack of mechanics that are overly groundbreaking or compelling, Catch The Ark manages to provide a polished, family-friendly experience that is second to none.

It's a curious experience, in spite of the battle pacing issues.

Pretty much the only thing holding Super Lemonade Factory back is the content - some more inventive level design and creative uses of the characters' abilities would be welcome, as this game has such promise.

A game may look and play identically to other titles on the market, but this is one that manages to somehow charm it's way past that.

Correcting some of the issues with its predecessor and providing some new ones comes Worms 4.

The game is just plain satisfying to play and the ever-present draw of earning better gear is a great motivator. I'm not too keen on the way the increasing difficulty can back players into a corner if they're saving for a particular gun (and completed stages can't be replayed), and money takes a long time to earn, but that's just how it is. I mean it's a game about shooting zombies. What else does anyone need to know, really?

In the end, it's not a game but a task manager; you don't play the Farmville app so much as you make it part of your workflow.

Dizzypad lives up to Nimblebit's previous strong track record, delivering a fun, well-rounded, casual and visually good-looking gaming experience which is both addictive and at the same time, a joy to play.

Until Wizards of the Coast finally creates an official Magic the Gathering adaptation for iOS, Orions 2 is likely as close as it gets.

The only real downside to Monkey Quest: Thunderbow is that when it's finished there's very little incentive to go back and play through it again.

Even if the game is a bit on the short side, there's no denying how enjoyable Harry the Fairy is to play, listen to and look at.

Bitter Sam may descend but it's not a deep plunge, nor is it innovative. But its comic appeal makes it a great a pick-up-a-play option for anyone who enjoys a pinch of irony with their gaming quick-fix.

While it's not really a racer in the technical sense, that doesn't keep Ion Racer from being entertaining. Fans of pretty much any kind of "runner" should certainly consider it. Everyone else should, too, because it's fun. It's also hard to put down and perfect for that pick-up and play gaming iOS users are accustomed to.

It probably won't warm the hearts of any haters out there, but it does give genre fans something with a bit more action and strategy than they might be used to.

A very fun and well-designed game. The graphics and soundtrack are very good and the game play is simple. The only draw back is the incentive to purchase credits to speed up unlocking items and upgrades.

This is by far one of the best games I’ve played on the iPhone. It’s fun, addicting, and simple to play. I strongly recommend checking this one out.

This open world sandbox crafting game with obvious inspirations doesn't win any awards for originality, but it still manages to incorporate features that are missing from the original.

Imps in Tokyo is a cool and stylish little game that's capable of winning over just about anyone who isn't completely opposed to line-drawing mechanics.

This arcade racer is an astounding spectacle of speed, adrenaline, and some confusing free-to-play design.

Fibble can be infuriating to deal with, particularly when things are just slightly awry, but the game still has its fun moments. With some tighter design in future levels, perhaps this would not be an issue, and the game would be a lot more fun.

With some more effort and inventiveness, Xenome Episode 1 could have been a great game. I hope that future chapters bear out the promise of its premise and its technical charms. For now, I can only give it a tepid recommendation, as its impressive graphics and expansive environment are dampened by a dull, plodding play experience.

Can Knockdown 2 is incredibly simple but that's to its benefit. It's not trying too hard to be something quirky.

Monsterz Revenge doesn't quite go so far as to revolutionise the casual social gaming market but it does go some way to feeling more like a game than something that you simply sit back and watch progress. If you're a fan of the genre, you're going to love it.

Line 'em up and clear 'em out in this topsy-turvy tile matching puzzle game.

Control issues aside, Z The Game is still a lot of strategic fun. The fast-paced nature of each level fits well with the on-the-go style most iOS users are used to and it practically feels like Z was originally designed with the platform in mind. Anyone who enjoys PC strategy games should find plenty to love here.

Zen Wars' value is largely in its incredibly fun multiplayer mode, so it comes highly recommended when players can gather up a few friends for some retro arcade-inspired strategy gaming. But if this is possible, then Zen Wars is a ton of fun.

It's a fun game to play for a short time, but the ever sinking feeling that more money needs to be invested, affects that urge to keep plugging away at it.

Offering two types of puzzle fun in one game, Droidscape:Basilica is a dark yet interesting action-puzzle game.

Packed full of variety, Pyro Jump is a challenging and clever little platform game that offers something for everyone.

Sequels often fall prey to the success of their predecessors. Sadly, this is another unfortunate case.

In the end, FIFA 11 will probably hold your attention longer than most other iOS sports sims, but it won't keep you playing season after season. The game itself, for what it is, isn't bad but the virtual joystick does become grating after long plays.

A charming conversion of a much loved platforming classic.

So, while I think the control mechanic is a step back, Temple Run fans who are clamoring for new iterations on the genre to play should have a good time with One Epic Knight and what it brings to the table.

Roar Rampage is loud, full of things to smash, and a giant dinosaur wearing boxing gloves. With controls that improve on the Flash original and the ability to smash the Eiffel Tower, what’s not to love about Roar Rampage?

While Army of Darkness Defense suffers from repetition issues, they are minor quibbles in what is one of my favorite castle defense games on the App Store. Even for those who are not fans of the Evil Dead franchise, the game has enough fun, addiction, humor, and lasting power to make it a definite recommendation, especially for the paltry sum of $0.99 for the iPhone/iPod touch versions.

Worms 3 adheres to the old adage: "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Nono Islands is a cute looking but rather tough platformer.

Combining simple combat with village building is a potent combination for this charming tale.

Stoneship makes a wonderfully light distraction. It's the kind of game you plan to play for five minutes then realise an hour has passed already.

This game has a lot going on and lots of it gives Space Tripper its unique flavor. However, the game's controls and its difficulty don't mesh well and make it very hard to enjoy all of its finer points. Combine that with what is fairly high price tag for an app of this type, players may want to think seriously before adding this to their collection.

A lot of thought has gone into the whole game, from the retina display graphics, to the layout of the title screen; which allows you to scroll around to enjoy the hi-res graphics even more. Everything works, and works well.

Stunt Star: The Hollywood Years is a lot of fun. I definitely enjoyed playing it and found myself repeating levels I had already cleared just to see if I could get a better score. The variety of vehicles, add-ons and number of levels help make this great game a lasting experience.

This hacker-themed game has less to do with actual hacking than it does delivering smart, highly addictive, and competitive strategy/puzzle action.

Hothead has refined their interesting CCG formula even further, but Rivals At War: 2084 still retains a few of the series' problems.

Combine tower building, tower defense, and lots of in-app purchases. This is what you get - craziness.

har•mo•ny’s core gameplay can get rather repetitive over extended periods, but it’s a relaxing little time-waster in short bursts.

Innovation isn't its strong point, but Small Fry is still an entertaining Endless Swimmer starring a cute fish.

Shapist is a sliding block puzzle packed with physics that requires a little experimentation and a whole lot of patience.

Eets Munchies is a puzzler that offers some entertainment, but won't set the world on fire.

SideSwype is a puzzler that takes inspiration from Threes, but becomes its own incredibly fun game.

TownCraft is now a universal app, and assembling a personal little town is as engaging as ever.

Revolution 60 is a bold, cinematic action game with ambition to spare.

Haunt the House: Terrortown is noticeably short, but it's still a clever title that looks great.

WWE 2K demonstrates there's plenty to learn while wrestling.

Business ethics are the least of your worries in Happy Wheels - a physics based obstacle course game.

The base mechanics of cover-shooting and troop deployment in WarFriends are super fun and satisfying, but they fall apart since the game allows players to purchase significant advantages over others. The design of WarFriends's free-to-play trappings may not be particularly new, or even egregious, but these concepts still do a lot to keep the game from feeling like the amazing game it could have been.

There's really no reason not to check out Father and Son. It's a beautiful, free game that tells a solid story along the way. Go get it, and go visit the Naples Archaeological Museum to get more of it to play if you like it.
