Baumbach fills his wide-screen frame with dinner scenes that feel Altmanesque, with overlapping dialogue. Action scenes that have the orchestrated chaos of Spielberg. And the nods to Baumbach favorite (and one of mine also) Brian DePalma. There's an homage to the 360 degree spinning scene from Blow Out. A split diopter scene (extreme foreground and background in focus). Most importantly, the dry satire DePalma incorporated in so many films. Driver proves to be one of the most versatile actors working, and Gerwig matches him every step of the way. Life, death and consumerism as viewed post an "airborne toxic event ", that mirrors pre-and-"post" pandemic life nowadays. The entire cast, including Don Cheadle as a professor of Elvis, is excellent. Knowing DeLilo's book was considered unfilmable for years, kudos to Baumbach for tackling the task and doing so well. And kudos to the production department for creating what looks to be the world's largest supermarket. Stay for the end credits for the dance scene that targets consumerism. Expand

Driver and Gerwig’s performances steady the tone when it becomes imbalanced. Baumbach has clearly given up traditional storytelling to deliver a character study of Driver’s character. Noah Baumbach's latest sure is his most unique project; the adaptation of Don DeLillo's supposedly "unfilmable" novel of the same name embraces absurdism to deliver a cryptic satire about consumerism, fatalism, and social anxiety. Adam Driver commits to one of those bonkers roles he can only make feel solemn and ridiculous; Greta Gerwig also does a good job portraying the mysterious and consternated wife. Baumbach's screenplay has its issues — its absurdist approach doesn't work all the time — but the way the story moves between drama, comedy, thriller, and even horror keeps you engaged during its 2 hours plus length.

P.S. 1: Is Raffey Cassidy slowly turning into Daniel Radcliffe?
P.S. 2: Stay for the charming credits sequence.
P.S. 3: The supermarket set built for the movie is the most satisfying thing to watch.

Normally I would absolutely hate a movie where the dialogue is near constantly and simultaneously coming out of every actors mouth that is on currently on screen making a cacophony of “white noise.” Worse, I generally despise when so much of the dialogue is being delivered with such dramatic weight as if it was being etched in stone. For some reason none of that dissuade me for both watching and enjoying this. This is definitely a film where you can tell how much the actors enjoy the work and excel at what they are giving in their performances to a point that I got swept up and brought along. There are some genuinely creepy moments and some masterful effects. It’s so well filmed and the staging/sets are amazing. The music is also just fantastic. I’m trying to think of something that this reminds me of, but it’s too grounded for it to be anything I’d like to compare it too. There isn’t a lot of humor really and normally that would put me off as well. The only thing is I felt like it over stays it’s welcome because of that. I’d recommend this if you’re in the mood for a mildly abstract drama with a good narrative. Expand

It's hilarious, emotional, and weird AF. There's lots of references to films of the era without it feeling like a nostalgia trip; it actually feels like art. I especially enjoyed the Robert Altman style overlapping dialogue, and the Close Encounters / Spielberg vibes. This film is vibrant and colorful, which is refreshing even if it is referencing rampant consumerism. Expand

Extremely good movie. Don't let bad reviews fool you in this case. It's basically people love the novel so much, no movie could be good enough or people who don't understand this type of movie at all.

We end up liking this "surviving", wanting it to continue long after we have served Darwin's famously established role.

The supermarket in the movie symbolizes indulgence and bliss in life, though natural selection cares for neither. Creatures exist because they are good at perpetually existing (I.e. through feeding and eventual reproduction) not because they have any purpose whatsoever. The supermarket, through it's abundance of excessive choices, exemplifies the jovial defiance of that reality. We are like Bender (Futurama) : conceived to bend metal, yet then plastering pleasure, pain, and meaning onto his meaningless existence.

This concept is conveyed surrealistically, intended to be read more like your own dreams than a movie. Really fun to watch, and really existentially triggering.

Was intrigued by the start, was really for sure feeling the airborne toxic event stuff, then was lost for a good 45 minutes, then enjoyed the best ending credits of the year. Adam Driver is just the best.

The movie has a good start, but the second half is disappointing. Adam Driver is the main reason to watch the movie.
