What I do care about is that the movie tries very hard at tackling some serious social issues but ultimately succeeds only in one thing... Being boring. I didn't find any of the characters appealing enough to even remotely care about them and their troubles. The overall message of the movie seems shallow and unoriginal at best. The technical side of the production is pretty good and I have nothing against the actors and such... But for anyone with more than a few brain cells alive it's going to be a repetitive snoozefest with an overplayed message about capitalism, existential fear and such. So yeah, the movie tries hard to be a lot of things but fails miserably. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This has to be one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. It’s like someone gave a bunch of theater kids way too much money. The dialog and monologues are delivered in such a self indulgently pretentious manner. I get that it’s supposed to be surreal, and usually I like those kind of “bits” but it was so far up its own … fill in the blank. It starts off making you think it’s a disaster movie, which turns out to be a giant McGuffin. This should have been a Broadway play, not a movie. Expand

Baumbach fills his wide-screen frame with dinner scenes that feel Altmanesque, with overlapping dialogue. Action scenes that have the orchestrated chaos of Spielberg. And the nods to Baumbach favorite (and one of mine also) Brian DePalma. There's an homage to the 360 degree spinning scene from Blow Out. A split diopter scene (extreme foreground and background in focus). Most importantly, the dry satire DePalma incorporated in so many films. Driver proves to be one of the most versatile actors working, and Gerwig matches him every step of the way. Life, death and consumerism as viewed post an "airborne toxic event ", that mirrors pre-and-"post" pandemic life nowadays. The entire cast, including Don Cheadle as a professor of Elvis, is excellent. Knowing DeLilo's book was considered unfilmable for years, kudos to Baumbach for tackling the task and doing so well. And kudos to the production department for creating what looks to be the world's largest supermarket. Stay for the end credits for the dance scene that targets consumerism. Expand

Noah Baumbach's latest sure is his most unique project; the adaptation of Don DeLillo's supposedly "unfilmable" novel of the same name embraces absurdism to deliver a cryptic satire about consumerism, fatalism, and social anxiety. Adam Driver commits to one of those bonkers roles he can only make feel solemn and ridiculous; Greta Gerwig also does a good job portraying the mysterious and consternated wife. Baumbach's screenplay has its issues — its absurdist approach doesn't work all the time — but the way the story moves between drama, comedy, thriller, and even horror keeps you engaged during its 2 hours plus length.

P.S. 1: Is Raffey Cassidy slowly turning into Daniel Radcliffe?
P.S. 2: Stay for the charming credits sequence.
P.S. 3: The supermarket set built for the movie is the most satisfying thing to watch.

For some reason none of that dissuade me for both watching and enjoying this. This is definitely a film where you can tell how much the actors enjoy the work and excel at what they are giving in their performances to a point that I got swept up and brought along. There are some genuinely creepy moments and some masterful effects. It’s so well filmed and the staging/sets are amazing. The music is also just fantastic. I’m trying to think of something that this reminds me of, but it’s too grounded for it to be anything I’d like to compare it too. There isn’t a lot of humor really and normally that would put me off as well. The only thing is I felt like it over stays it’s welcome because of that. I’d recommend this if you’re in the mood for a mildly abstract drama with a good narrative. Expand

So many elements collide in White Noise that it barely manages to put together anything that actually seems to have been coherently constructed.

What is even more surprising is that Noah Baumbach seems to want his film to have the same complexity of several of the themes that the plot develops and yet it is evident that the story gets out of his hands on several occasions, and more than once I felt that he left everything up in the air not with the intention of making it feel like a puzzle but as something that he wasn't able to make sense of either.

From what I understand, because I don't know the book on which this film is based, the book itself is considered unfilmable, and being now its first adaptation, it is clear that Baumbach failed to crack the code and the film he was left with was a collection of ideas that, while not lacking in complete direction, also don't seem to have any sense that could be called definite or useful.

Was it ego that made him try to tackle a story like this? I can only make assumptions, but in my opinion, he failed big time.

Baumbach still created a distinct rhythm that you grow quite fond of as you move along with Jack and the world. Dysstopian-esque but dystopian in a way which bothered me, it felt like a plot device, only a deus ex-machina tactic to wound Jack with the conscience of death. I loved up until the 3rd act, the middle was when it started showing cracks in the story but the last 3rd was really when everything started to fall apart. It felt more as if Noah Baumbach grew tired of writing the story and wanted to finish it as soon as possible, it ended too swiftly and the climax it wanted to build up to, just collapsed right before it could work. Marriage Story (my review) was powerful, while I didn't care for Mistress America (my review) or Frances Ha (my review). This time he's combining some of the issues from his previous work to create this rather unusual meditation on life, love and happiness. Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig play parents in a blended family. First, it's about their issues, then an evacuation notice causes a panic and finally they're back to navel gazing. There are undoubtedly humorous moments and some interesting sequences, but there are also extended periods of introspective dialogue that's more for the writer than for us. Driver (who's grown a gut for the role) is compelling as always, but it's hard to predict this film's appeal since it's an unusual mix. I appreciated it more than liked it. The credits are the most fun because Baumbach created a music video in the grocery store. Expand

The dialogue throughout the movie is incredibly fast moving and off (almost certainly on purpose) and the overall pacing of the plot is done in a very strange way. When the movie was finished it felt like I had just watched two separate films back-to-back, that's how odd the pacing was. The film also deals with some very heavy philosophical and existential themes which will be off putting to many. I believe I know what the overall point the film is trying to make was, but getting to this revelation may not be worth the time or just be annoying to many movie watchers. Expand

We end up liking this "surviving", wanting it to continue long after we have served Darwin's famously established role.

The supermarket in the movie symbolizes indulgence and bliss in life, though natural selection cares for neither. Creatures exist because they are good at perpetually existing (I.e. through feeding and eventual reproduction) not because they have any purpose whatsoever. The supermarket, through it's abundance of excessive choices, exemplifies the jovial defiance of that reality. We are like Bender (Futurama) : conceived to bend metal, yet then plastering pleasure, pain, and meaning onto his meaningless existence.

This concept is conveyed surrealistically, intended to be read more like your own dreams than a movie. Really fun to watch, and really existentially triggering.

Come to find out both movies are adaptations of books by the same author, Don DeLillo. I haven't read DeLillo's work, but he clearly has a unique style if two directors as different as Noah Baumbach and David Cronenberg wind up making such similar feeling movies out of his source material. I guess his style must work better on the page because it doesn't quite work on screen, though it is constantly interesting. The best thing to come from this is that it got us a new LCD Soundsystem song, New Body Rhumba, and it **** slaps.
