It's an ambitious mess. Meh.

So many elements collide in White Noise that it barely manages to put together anything that actually seems to have been coherently constructed.

What is even more surprising is that Noah Baumbach seems to want his film to have the same complexity of several of the themes that the plot develops and yet it is evident that the story gets out of his hands on several occasions, and more than once I felt that he left everything up in the air not with the intention of making it feel like a puzzle but as something that he wasn't able to make sense of either.

From what I understand, because I don't know the book on which this film is based, the book itself is considered unfilmable, and being now its first adaptation, it is clear that Baumbach failed to crack the code and the film he was left with was a collection of ideas that, while not lacking in complete direction, also don't seem to have any sense that could be called definite or useful.

Was it ego that made him try to tackle a story like this? I can only make assumptions, but in my opinion, he failed big time.

I really only take issue with the writing, the story felt quite riveting up until it attempted to create meaning, very underwritten in how it tried to express the themes of despair but ironically or accurate(I really don't know the intentionI really only take issue with the writing, the story felt quite riveting up until it attempted to create meaning, very underwritten in how it tried to express the themes of despair but ironically or accurate(I really don't know the intention was)it worked quite well with it's absurdist humor, a dollar store Yorgos Lanthimos film. Baumbach still created a distinct rhythm that you grow quite fond of as you move along with Jack and the world. Dysstopian-esque but dystopian in a way which bothered me, it felt like a plot device, only a deus ex-machina tactic to wound Jack with the conscience of death. I loved up until the 3rd act, the middle was when it started showing cracks in the story but the last 3rd was really when everything started to fall apart. It felt more as if Noah Baumbach grew tired of writing the story and wanted to finish it as soon as possible, it ended too swiftly and the climax it wanted to build up to, just collapsed right before it could work. Marriage Story (my review) was powerful, while I didn't care for Mistress America (my review) or Frances Ha (my review). This time he's combining some of the issues from his previous work to create this rather unusual meditation on life, love and happiness. Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig play parents in a blended family. First, it's about their issues, then an evacuation notice causes a panic and finally they're back to navel gazing. There are undoubtedly humorous moments and some interesting sequences, but there are also extended periods of introspective dialogue that's more for the writer than for us. Driver (who's grown a gut for the role) is compelling as always, but it's hard to predict this film's appeal since it's an unusual mix. I appreciated it more than liked it. The credits are the most fun because Baumbach created a music video in the grocery store. Expand

I'd recommend, but only for those who like their films obtuse. Expand

But the postmodern classic book simply doesn’t translate to the screen. I feel bad for Driver, he probably should have gotten a best actor nom, but you can’t see past the movie itself.Rampant consumerism, media saturation, novelty academic intellectualism, underground conspiracies, the disintegration and reintegration of the family, human-made disasters, and the potentially regenerative nature of violence is just too much for 2 hours and 16 minutes. The dialogue throughout the movie is incredibly fast moving and off (almost certainly on purpose) and the overall pacing of the plot is done in a very strange way. When the movie was finished it felt like I had just watched two separate films back-to-back, that's how odd the pacing was. The film also deals with some very heavy philosophical and existential themes which will be off putting to many. I believe I know what the overall point the film is trying to make was, but getting to this revelation may not be worth the time or just be annoying to many movie watchers. Expand

THE GOOD: The craziness and dark humour of White Noise does somehow work during its first half. Sharp dialogues and interesting camera work. The dope end credits almost made me rise my rating in 1 point.

THE BAD: Once the first 2 acts end, what once felt as unpredictable becomes stupid and jokes aren't funny anymore. It touches so many genres and tones that I didn't know what was I watching or what the film wanted to transmit. It is as ambitious as messy.

The stilted dialogue and unreality of everything was constantly reminding me of Cronenberg's Cosmopolis all throughout. Come to find out both movies are adaptations of books by the same author, Don DeLillo. I haven't read DeLillo's work, but he clearly has a unique style if two directors as different as Noah Baumbach and David Cronenberg wind up making such similar feeling movies out of his source material. I guess his style must work better on the page because it doesn't quite work on screen, though it is constantly interesting. The best thing to come from this is that it got us a new LCD Soundsystem song, New Body Rhumba, and it **** slaps.

This movie ended up being weirdly prophetic of the train derailment/ecological disaster in Ohio, which is where the movie was shot oddly enough.
