Keanu and Carrie-Anne Moss on screen together are the high-points of the film -- their chemistry is fantastic. Carrie-Anne in particular displays easily the best acting in the film and also does look great when she does eventually get 12 seconds of combat to perform on screen. But everything else about the film is very disappointing or irritating. The no-name new cast of characters that I could not tell you any of the names of, that fan over Neo and his legend feel cringe-worthy and embarrassing to the other characters in the film. The legend worship in general feels like it cheapens the plight of the characters of the original trilogy as they all have to sit there and hear from bland new characters how cool they are. The choice to have Agent Smith return but not be played by Hugo Weaving puts Jonathon Groff in the unfortunate position of doing a bad impression of a legendary character instead of being left to deliver a new character to life.

Most importantly though, this movie is simply dull: there are no cool kung-fu scenes the originals were known for, the cinematography is bland, the majority of the cast is forgettable, Niobe returning 60 years older looks awful in her aged-up makeup and delivers a distractingly poor performance and there's a LOT of exposition. At one point Neil Patrick Harris' character monologues in front of a struggling Neo for what must've been over 5 full minutes. Perhaps the poorest decision in the film is the choice to make Morpheus' death (an event that happened off-screen) cannon. Not only does it mean we do not get to see Lawerence Fishburne reprise his most legendary role, Lana chose to write in a person who is literally tasked to impersonate Morpheus (no that's not a joke). A guy shows up, says "I'm Morpheus" and then just tries his best to act like this character for the whole film. Without any of the experience or characters building that made that man who he was. In fact, his ineptitude is kind of played for laughs at the beginning. I would've expected Neo to be pissed off (once he gets all his faculties back together) that someone would just choose to impersonate one of the most important men in his life, but he feels extremely passive throughout the film -- you'd think Neo would have something to say about the world around him after all these years but apparently not.

So yeah, I like to be positive but I was very, VERY disappointed.

I'm totally disappointed. When the movieI had to see the new Matrix because it's just the Matrix. I liked the trailers quite a bit. Unfortunately, I take it I was fooled and just fell into some sort of illusion that it could be good. I'm totally disappointed. When the movie started, for the first 10 minutes or so I was like yeah, this is it. I liked it. It was great. But it didn't take long for it to get bad. Very bad. There was a point where I thought, they've already messed this up and they don't have a chance to fix it. Unfortunately, that feeling stayed with me for the rest of the movie. After about 15 minutes, I was not entertained, not interested in the film, and found the story to be bad. I like the series a lot and consider the trilogy to be something amazing and yes, I like Reloaded and Revolutions a lot too, but this, this really didn't. I didn't like the new The Matrix Resurrections perhaps at all. The only thing that appealed to me here and there was the action because it had good music. After that, though, it immediately disappointed me because it had weird slow-motion stuttering effects in places that movies like that used in the 2000s. Whether this was supposed to be some kind of nostalgia here or something that was supposed to look good, I don't know. The action from the original Matrix, which came out in 1999, seemed much better to me at the same time because it didn't have these slow motion moments as far as I know. Where I have to nitpick is Neo himself. I think he's pretty much useless here. His younger self would have kicked his ass. I get that they were trying to capture the fact that he's aged here and that he's not as good as he once was, but for me he was really rubbish and in a way that I thought it was completely, but utterly unnecessary in the finale to make this sequel. The story is terrible in my opinion and I haven't even mentioned that it tries to somehow connect the previous films and explain some things about them, which usually doesn't work out well and here it turned out I would say downright awful. The action is often worse than in the previous films because Neo isn't what he used to be. Unfortunately, I don't see anything good about this movie except for a few moments with good music. I don't think this should have happened. It spoils the franchise unnecessarily. More franchises have had such an unpleasant sequel, like Terminator, Alien, Predator and so on. Now, sadly, I can confirm for myself that this "money machine" and wringing of a well-known brand was also given to the Matrix. For me, a very bad movie that I recommend avoiding and fans of the franchise should avoid. Overall, it strikes me as a better fan-made movie than a true sequel. Expand

A film that tries to tweak the idea of unnecessary reboots and sequels, but can't escape the fact that it truly is one. It tries to bend over backwards to justify its own existence but fails, and is often baffling.

The choreography, cinematography, CG, wardrobe, and editing are on par with a cheap Syfy movie of the week; it's incredible that every single aspect on the visual side is worse than 20 years ago. There are far too many jump cuts to try and mask the poor fight choreography and every mildly interesting scenario is just a pale imitation of a sequence from the other movies. Neo now has a goofy looking forcefield/energy blast gimmick on top of his already OP The One abilities that removes the small amount of tension in combat because he can seemingly use it indefinitely to block any attack if he feels like it, I suspect some of it has to do with Keanu's age finally catching up with him; it was noticeable in John Wick 3 but it's very apparent here. The special effects, like bullet time and the agent's shifting into others are stylistically worse than the trilogy and there's a new VERY poorly done slow motion effect that is overused, especially by the new big bad, and the lighting is poorly done because the use of green/blue screen is always obvious. The weapons are just as atrocious; like a bad FPS game nothing feels like it has any weight to it and again looks cheap. There's also an introduction to friendly machine lifeforms that are named and designed like a throwaway Star Wars side character and it's all so tonally blind I couldn't help but laugh, one of them is a deus ex machina that just shows up and can solve half their problems.

Gone are the days of well researched and written philosophical quandaries and interpersonal experiences, now the dialogue is laughably bad and inappropriate for their scenes with plenty of hamfisted attempts at feminism. Instead of a clever wink and a nod to it's predecessors it is frequently and clumsily shoving references in your face while regularly showing clips from the trilogy, the first five times this happened I chuckled but when it kept on happening I couldn't stop from rolling my eyes. The machines have inexplicably become sexist towards women (the ending exchange is some of the worst writing I've ever witnessed) when they've always just put down the mankind as a species. Despite being humanity's saviour and knowing Trinity better than anyone Neo is constantly put down and told his opinions are inconsequential when requiring multiple attempts to her out even though the others needed multiple to save Neo, to paraphrase 'the most important choice of his life isn't his to make'. The One's code is also shared by two now, get it they're non binary huh huh you get it? It's very clever. This whole choice is strange because in the trilogy women play the most important roles human outside of Neo and Morpheus: Trinity saves Neo's life, helps him every step of the way, and kicks all kinds of ass throughout, the Oracle is one of the most key beings in the story, the council is half female, Niobe is the best pilot humanity has, they couldn't have defeated the Merovingian without Persephone, women stop the machine's drills, etc

Oh, and on top of all that there isn't a single memorable piece of new music in the film.

TL;DR
It feels like a bad fan-fiction that lacks any of the identifiable traits that made the trilogy so beloved, Resurrections is in no way worth watching.

Honestly, I'm a fan of Wachowski movies. I think they're special filmmakers - unconventional and somewhat profound. From The Matrix to Cloud Atlas to Jupiter Ascending, and even the much maligned Matrix Revolutions I've found them allHonestly, I'm a fan of Wachowski movies. I think they're special filmmakers - unconventional and somewhat profound. From The Matrix to Cloud Atlas to Jupiter Ascending, and even the much maligned Matrix Revolutions I've found them all brilliantly intriguing. However, The Matrix Resurrections is a different movie.

It differs so much from its original trilogy the only commonalities they share are their titles and characters. This movie looks modern, polished, and very in the times - a whole lot more than the trilogy that precedes it but it unfortunately, ends up feeling much cheaper and very conventional.

There's some beautiful CGI and Visual Effects, some of which is entirely impressive. So the movie looks good enough and properly 2021. It also presents concepts that shine and introduce some new ideas or implementations of AI programs in cinema. And this is one of only a few positives the movie offers - positives are few and far between. While, it also does an OK job of representing aspects of our current world within the context of The Matrix.

The movie certainly doesn't take itself too seriously. It does not try to be revolutionary and while that could have been a plus, in the end, it plays out negatively. The plot is weak, sterile and unexciting. Its action sequences are poor and barring the casting of Neil Patrick Harris as The Analyst and Toby Onwumere as Seq most of the cast of the movie while talented - seem completely out of place, and uninspired. As if, they were simply - easy and convenient casting choices.

Every Matrix movie from the original trilogy was about a world vast and deep, with consequences that carried a whole lot more purpose for everyone linked to that world including its audiences, this movie however is based upon simpler, less interesting, less impactful - terms. There's some sprinkling of profundity within The Matrix Resurrections but throughout the movie it seems to be battling with the depths and grandeur of its past so much that it fails, and cannot realize its purpose. It cannot escape the shadow of its predecessors, it does not separate itself from them, and it ends up being worse off as a result.

It tries to do too much and explain too much all in one movie. So much so that this fourth installment alone could be a trilogy of its own, which I think would have helped the story and its characters - but here, everything is rushed and packed into this singular title that just ends up feeling a little ambitious but truly disjointed. While sometimes literally trying to recreate its past.

This is probably not only the poorest Matrix movie but also the poorest and most meaningless Wachowski Movie. Perhaps, the point was to kill any hope, idea, or possibility of the franchise having a future. Because this is a lifeless, conventional, and unfortunate disappointment.

For me, those changes weren't a major issue, and if anything were some of the more entertaining aspects of the movie. There were a few moments that felt a little overbearing, but nothing too egregious.

The real issue is that the movie just isn't very good. The music was bland, the CGI was ugly, the editing was bad, the choreography was uninteresting and the action was occasionally hard to read a la the Bourne films, the cinematography was lifeless, the script was pretty abysmal, with several interesting ideas all executed poorly. The use of flashbacks were atrocious. The meta commentary immediately wore thin. While this is definitely not a full retread of older Matrix films, it still carries the baggage of one. Huge swaths of the movie are just people explaining things to the audience. The earlier movies are somewhat guilty of this, but Keanu just doesn't work as an audience surrogate or as an engaging character here and we are mostly taken out of the film as a result. Keanu lacks the intensity he had when he was younger, leaving him to mostly just appear bored, and the flat framing and editing does nothing to help remedy that. This especially comes across in the action, such as when he's jumping away from an explosion and it really feels like an old dude jumping in front of a green screen. The newcomers were fine, but the Morpheus surrogate didn't feel anything like Morpheus or the other character he's meant to embody. The whole thing felt like a made for TV movie with a bigger budget that went almost entirely to bad CGI. Carrie-Anne Moss is fine, which is good because her character is integral to the better aspects of the plot, but Keanu really is the crux of the film and fails to carry it. The new villains do not work. This honestly just doesn't feel like a Matrix movie. It feels like a pitch with some salvageable ideas in it.

As much as I respect Reeves, I'm also not sure why he signed up for a 4th time. The sequel and the 3rd movie were already underwhelming with metaphors weighing down the plot. With the 4th movie, it already knows that it's not good so it tries to keep reminding you how great the 1st movie was with constant clips, breaking the 4th wall. Speaking of the 1st movie, the fighting choreography was the best. None of the sequels compare even for that one thing. Maybe use more of the budget on that next time if you can't fix it with CGI?

Really, any chance for a good sequel was killed by the 3rd movie's plot. There were things that could have been explored from the 2nd movie, but they didn't.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This really does feel like a Netflix or otherwise made for TV adaptation, nothing ever feels truly cinematic. Morpheus and Smith never feel like their original characters so why not just have them BE new characters? We know Neo wants to get Trinity back but I couldn't tell you what the motives really are for any other character doing what they do in the story. The constant flashbacks seem cheap and none of the action stands out. What I will say is I don't really have a problem with most of the main cast. Acting wasn't the problem, but a lot of other stuff certainly was. If it weren't for that I'd almost say it was as bad as WB's other retread cashgrab Space Jam 2 earlier this year. The whole 'meta' aspect of both movies comes across like narcissism by WB. Expand

What could have been a promising start with fresh characters turns quickly into a frustrating meta-critique on the frustration of the creation of the film before our very eyes.

The next two hours of runtime is tired nostalgia bait, beating a dead horse to the point of necrophilia, and showing off all the weaknesses of the original trilogy.

Any new and interesting ideas are presented to the audience in a single line and then discarded. New characters are introduced as replacement for old characters, and returning characters get swept into the ongoing action porn with no chance for depth or exploration. If you find anything to like about the film, trust it to be discarded almost immediately so that we can spend more time getting lazily **** by questionable reality that has been portrayed and explored better in dozens of films since the release of the original trilogy.

The quality of the film varies from scene to scene, and not just the laughable intercuts to older material. The whole thing ends up feeling like a season of a TV show recut to a feature film. The fight choreography starts great. It was easy to follow the action and the visual language of the characters is distinct. I honestly can't tell if the fights stay interesting visually, because the lack of stakes and consequence make the fights a tiring waste of time in an already overlong film. The wardrobe seeming to lose momentum in terms of vibrancy and distinctness over time doesn't help this.

The Matrix Resurrections wants to keep telling Neo's story. It doesn't want to explore any of the consequences of the original trilogy. It doesn't want to move on and explore the world it has created. It all feels so sad and shallow. I left this film with no new questions, just emptiness.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm very disappointed. From a fans perspective, the movie is insulting. Not because it tries something new, some ideas aren't even that bad and in the first 15 minutes of the movie I had a bit of hope. But everything execution wise is mediocre at best. Action scenes aren't edited well, you never really know what's going on, there's no sense of a well done choreography here. The superhuman fighting scenes in dark, gritty, rainy places had a whole lot of swag in the first movie. This movie completely lacks that atmosphere. It looks like some weaker netflix production. The acting isn't something to write home about, sometimes even ridiculous. The merovingian carried the second movie, in this movie they made an unfunny joke of this character. Many scenes are just comical, but involuntarily. Music? Meh. New characters? Completely forgettable. And the biggest irony is that 4th wall break in the beginning of the movie, which is a brazen move given what they delivered us with this movie. Don't spend money on this, you're going to be disappointed. Just wait a few months, stream it and be disappointed then. Expand

I've read all the wikis, own paraphernalia, played the games and debated theories to this day. The first movie was so well thought you could never stop finding interesting new references every time. I could talk about it like if it came out yesterday.

This...is nothing like the movies I fell in love with. And I went into that theater ready to pour my heart on it. Hell, the unreal demo had me FREAKING GOING...but the premise, the music, the new characters, the convolutedly dumb plot, and sub par choreography made me feel like I was watching another movie, like a parody or a different interpretation of the Matrix. After watching it, the first thing I did was going back home and watching the originals again in an attempt to cleanse my eyes of what they had seen. I will say there's some good and interesting aspects of the movie, but oh man the bad outweighs the good by tons.

I created this account out of the grief of seeing this movie and the need to release my disappointment to anyone caring to read. I can only recommend seeing it once if you are a fan of the series and need some closure.

That sacrifices the franchise, using nostalgia as a trojan horse to deliver its subtext. But it's fundamentally a love story. Or so we're told.

All the known stamps of a solo wachowski project of the last 15 years are present here. Convoluted premises and plots, with sloppy spiritual and pseudo-philosophical messages. You've heard the criticisms before. "Interesting ideas, poor execution". Blah, blah.

This time there's a new added twist. Overusing meta narratives to subvert your expectations of what a sequel/reboot should be like. Half way through the movie, after your head has been beaten to a pulp by these meta narratives, you'll pick up on things the movie wants you to gloss over. Like a splinter in your mind driving you mad... How they bridged the last movie to the new one seems treated like an afterthought. How they brought back old characters seemed forced and sloppy, and sometimes intentionally played for comedic effect. Oh, and there's a war going on with new alliances forged. Did you forget of all that? Because what they really want you to remember is that this is a love story. Or that maybe the noise of social media is just like war's. Oh heck I'm confused.

It also looks very scaled down compared to the first three movies, while still remaining a visually-competent movie. All actors do a good job specially the new girl who serves as a catalyst of men's fanboyism over neo.

Where do we go from here, it's up to what people will get out of it...
To me the movie felt more like a final send off, than a sequel meant to reboot the franchise. Because the motivations given as an excuse to make this movie sound dubious at best. The end result could be easily misinterpreted as a final FU to fans of the original matrix film, from an industry veteran whose interesting but flawed work, has been largely ignored by pop culture in the last decade...

I'd give the movie some props. You see, the movie and I had a connection. I don’t fully understand how it happened. But it finally killed ALL my curiosity and interest in any future reboot, remake, prequel, sequel of ANY franchise. It did really made me think how burned out I am on modern hollywood movies. And even though it felt like a depressing exercise to sit through it, it set me free. I've unplugged of any interest in crappy reboots/sequels - a new man, so to speak. Btw, did I mention it's a love story? I guess I felt too burned out at the end to care about that. Definitely not worth a rewatch.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The heart of the story was pretty good, if they didn't ruin the movie with 30 minutes of cringy meta bs it could have been serviceable. Morpheus and Smith characters are totally underwhelming, Neo's dynamic with the machines and gaslighting was actually pretty good. It really feels like Lana tried to scuttle the franchise because she didn't want anyone to make more of them. For me, kind of a superfan, I'll not be seeing any sequels to this, and for me there are only Three Matrix movies. Neo doesn't hold a gun, and he has a fancy force field now, kind of undermining the feel of his powers being the result of him hacking the world. Bugs could have been Morpheus and they could have left Morpheus dead. Smith didn't have to exist. The meta bs could have been cut and you would have a far better movie. Expand

Before the release of this one I watched from start to finish Sense8, just to see if they can still deliver. It was pretty much the same experience. Low budget action scenes combined with too much emphasis on relations. I'm bringing this on since it seems that a lot of the cast from Sense8 is here now. I advice WB to ask other directors to do this one if they really want to continue. If this was their attempt to mock the franchise then they succeeded. Expand

As a movie I give it a 3 because it's simply poorly structured, has very little focus on the plot and a really bad ending that just bates us into a sequel. The plot is also pretty weak and is similar to a kid's fairy tale.

I'd give this a 0 as a matrix movie if I'd feel normal, but it's Christmas and I can't do that now. It has nothing to do with the matrix, only effects like the fighting and stuff like that. Of course you have good actors from previous matrix movies in here, but the movie is pretty bad. The actors did a great job, but the director was doing a really lousy job and just went for more feel than actual structure. Really bad movie with no clear antagonist, unclear ending and weak plot. Don't go to the cinema to see this like I did, you're just gonna leave disappointed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I liked some twists in this film such as Smith being suddenly helpful then being a huge a-hole again and the scene where bots were used as bombs was ridiculously disturbing and reminded me of The Happening, a movie that seriously scared the s**t out of me. Sadly, this movie is in the realm of dumpsites.

I dislike this movie for the reasons numbered below.

1. There's not much action and the fight scenes felt so weak.
2. Neo just waves his hand at those bots to defeat them to the point it becomes unbearable to watch. We all know Keanu can still do some badass martial arts right John Wick?
3. Gunfights dominated this movie. The way they replicated those action scenes that made The Matrix Trilogy iconic was cringy and weak.
4. Does the camera man have some kind of mild epilepsy or somethin'? His seizures seem to occur when people fight in front of him. This almost feels like I'm watching those horrible Bourne fight scenes again and I almost puked 'cause of all the camera shakes and the infuriating throw-impact cuts. RIP action-focused cinematography.
5. Trinity being the one who unlocked her flight powers first before Neo smells like feminist agenda to me. It's fine that she was the key to Neo's Ultra Instinct mojo but her being set as more powerful than Neo at the end didn't feel right. What was she, The Two? Or The 0.5?
6. Knowing the fact that nothing actually improved after all those sacrifices in the previous films almost made me shoot the screen with a shotgun. In fact, everything went down to s**t 'cause humans were forced to hide even deeper, Zion got f****d up real bad, the Matrix was still infected with that God-awful version of Smith, and bots were added to f**k things up even worse 'cause Smith can easily infect them no matter the distance. What did Neo accomplish? Humans being able to grow strawberries with the help of rebel machines who sided with humans after his sacrifice in Revolutions? Dafack (face palm)
7. The Brass Against rendition of Wake Up by Rage Against The Machine in the end credits was an abomination for me. I hate it and it made me hate this movie even more. Murdering a masterpiece is unforgivable. This film was a 5 before I heard that song but I decided to give this a 3 for I detest that rendition at the end. The original song was already perfectly used in the first Matrix movie.

If I can choose to forget one movie I'd choose this one. They should have stayed at Revolutions. It's funny though how Neo in this film didn't want to make a 4th game about The Matrix. The filmmakers should have listened to Neo.

THE GOOD
- Its original cast returns.. except for Agent Smith and Morpheus.. Really? For real? If I was the director, I would've cancelled the film if they couldn't return.
- Sometimes great visuals
- Entertaining action set pieces
- Great score
- Sometimes stylish (which I like)

THE BAD
- Mediocre performances
- Pacing issues
- A cliche, unoriginal, bland, and overused story concept
- The lighting is too bright and the color correction is too vibrant (it just doesn't look or feel right. The original film better utilizes the CC as it had a green haze plastered over it, when they were in the Matrix. But here, you can't distinguish reality from the Matrix and it can sometimes become confusing)

These are just a few of my main complaints with the film. I had my expectations low and was still disappointed. This sequel could've been a return to form for the Matrix film. A landmark in the Sci-Fi genre, but all that potential is immediately lifted when the writing and sense of direction mixes.

Neo and Trinity doesn't seem to fit in their own movie, the pacing is atrocious, the characters are all over the place, the plot doesn't make any sense, and it ultimately goes nowhere. The CGI and the fighting scenes, once revolutionary in cinema history with the original trilogy when they were released in the late 90s-early 00s, could have been the only saving grace for this movie to be acceptable, but they are dull and completely forgettable. It almost seems like an attempt from the Wachowskis to boycott their own franchise. At the beginning I was sad that neither Hugo Weaving nor Laurence Fishburne came back to reprise their roles, but looking back at it I believe they just dodged a huge bullet. Save your money (And time!) and watch the other three movies. Expand

I'm almost three hours closer to death and that time was utterly wasted by this drivel. I could sit here and write 3000-4000 words on everything that is bad or wrong with this movie but plenty have already echoed what I'd write and it's already wasted enough of my precious time. The only positive is that Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions are no longer the worst movies in the franchise. Compared to Matrix Resurrections, those two are positively masterpieces... Stick to the original trilogy. Hell, stick to the original first movie.

Spend your precious time on literally ANYTHING else.

I wanted it to be another landmark in cinema history. I wanted all of these things, but it wasn't meant to be. It sadly failed in all of these respects. The plot was not respectful to the previous movies, it was weak and I couldn't really care about the outcome. The casting choices were poor, for example Agent Smith, who is supposed to be the meanest and scariest of them all, all but diminished to some generic, forgettable form. Besides Neo and Trinity, the other characters were circus caricatures, each with their own little nickname, party-shop sunglasses and hairstyle. I never felt connected or concerned about the well-being of the characters. Their success or demise were uninteresting. Special effects were average, fight scenes were boring and there was nothing ground breaking, not even on par with the rest of cinema today. Compared to the amazing fight sequences for example in Shang-Chi, it paled in comparison. To top it off, the WOKE messages felt forced, but these I could have lived with if everything else was done right. This movie could have been better. There are many more plotlines that could have been brain-twistingly interesting and mind-melting. But it settled for average. It wasn't meant to be. Expand

I honestly can't understand why some people rate this above a 3 or 4. Honestly.
The latest iteration of the matrix series is breaking my matrix fanboy heart. I have loved the movies since they first released and it has been on my top 3 of all times. But that era has come to and end and it's time to say good bye.

The first Matrix got loved by people around the world for the innovative special effects, the deep story, the anime inspired camera shots and the amazing Bullet time, never before seen in cinemas.
Nothing of that magic is kept in Matrix 4. The soul of the Matrix universe is gone and replaced with some kind of Hollywood washed out garbage standard formula 1A.
It's quite noticeable that they didn't really want to make this movie. It's whole existence is a proof of that. Even the meta discussions within the movie provide evidence for this theory.
The film follows the same formula you've seen a million times before. Introduce main character, poorly executed story elements, a few low budget action scenes, some old washed out special effects, climax end fight, curtain call.

Each and every action scene in the movie is worse than in the original. The choreography is slow and predictable. Nothing new is brought to the table. We have all seen it before.
They have a few special effects (you have seen them before) which they re-use during the scenes of the movie. One move, by Neo, is done over 10 times. The same... effect.. 10.. times.. It's unbearable to watch.

To top it off, as a final stab in the back they removed that old "matrix feeling" and atmosphere (Green tinted, slow mo poses that we all loved) and replaced it with a hand full of wokeness instead. White male is bad, women, people of colour and LBTQ+ is good. Keanu Reeves looks like a lost boy surrounded by a political correct woke cast.
Even though I respect all kind of people no matter colour or sexual preferences, I'm getting so tired of having it shoved down my throat. I just wanted to see a great movie, I didn't pay to get lectured. But lectured is what I got, and a great movie was nowhere to be seen.

Matrix 1-3 will keep on living in my heart until the day I die but this movie will be dead and buried. The legend is dead and the Matrix is no more.

But the memories remain.

The Matrix Resurrections tinkers with cool ideas of personal choice in the modern age, as well as direct meta attacks on the reboot/sequelization of IPs that should remain dead, but doesn't do or say anything with these ideas. The storytelling is downright confusing and I felt so lost throughout it. Following an intriguing first act is a truly terribly paced second act filled with endless nonsensical monologuing and a near loss of any sense of what's going on. Furthermore, the cinematography truly contains some downright ugly shots and the action sequences also range from acceptable to broadcast TV bad, as it doesn't do enough with the intricacies of The Matrix and contains some of the worst gun choreography I've seen in a movie. All of the actors give good performances, but the recasting of Smith and Morpheus felt much more jarring than I thought it'd be, with both feeling like they should've been excluded rather than recast. The Matrix Resurrections shows why this franchise should've been left on the IP shelf, as it was ridiculously overwritten, nonsensical, and honestly quite a bit cynical. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really like the idea of The Matrix. I enjoyed all 3 even if I can acknowledge that their story choices weren't always the most statisfying to me. I could see the manga and anime influences in their choices and so I gave them a huge pass on all the Judeo-Christian messianic tropes that was the resolution of the trilogy. It didn't tie up all the loose ends... but it did "balance the equation". The animatrix (which was released between 2 and 3) was far more imaginative and did a lot for the world building. Having just recently rewatched all the 3 again in preparation for part 4, I think Reloaded (part 2) is my favourite. It all mostly holds up 20 years later, and while the first fares the worst because we've just seen it (and it has been riffed on) so many times... it's impact is just a little less than what it was. And #3 actually fares better this many years later, as all the questions that were bouncing around my head after #2 have all but evaporated in time... #3 is a tense fun ride. What all 3 of them have in common - regardless of plot - is tight editing, fantastic lighting and meaningful camera work.

So, the last thing I expected for part 4... is for any of those stables to be lacking. I thought that perhaps I may not like the plot or the handling of the resurrections... or all the old cast... or all the new cast... but I didn't imagine that I would be let down by shoddy editing, bad camerawork (especially during the fight scenes) and really awful lighting. The story itself is "meh" - it's a "save the princess" trope, which considering its pro feminist roots feels slightly odd. It doesn't really add to the world building more than a couple of novel ideas... but they're not really explored... just drive by "what ifs". It's incredibly self referential... it's written into the story that it is aware of the first 3 movies, aware of Warner Brothers (the production company) and actively talks about these things at you. It's meant to be played for laughs... but it was a little too much on the side of cringe. It of course also tries to pay homage to itself, by recreating old iconic shots... and all this does is throw a spotlight on the zero iconic shots this movie brings to the table (as well as show us that 20 years later, it's seemingly impossible to improve on those shots). The CGI and the art direction of the machines is top notch. They've defanged the sentinels with a weird drone-like sound effect which them less frightening, but they're hardly featured so fine. The art direction of the live set pieces isn't that great. Busy backgrounds, flat lighting, cut-cut-cut, over blurred images... means you cannot see the story of a fight scene. I wonder if Lana needs Lilly to make a good movie... cos by herself, this move feels exceptionally amateur in places. The big action set pieces are badly photographed, so you don't know the location... and the action on screen is so frenetic you cannot tell who's winning anywhere. They've also eschewed some of the staples of the franchise which made it iconic. You no longer need a hard line to get in and out of the matrix - thereby effectively killing any tension in this act. It seemingly can happen whenever the plot requires it. Thematically, it's the same theme as the trilogy (love conquers all)... which is fine. It's part of the DNA of the show, like the planet killing Death Stars are the DNA of every star wars story. It's fine... just a little on the nose. Fight scenes are a visual cutty mess. It's one of the few sci-fi franchises to feature an incredibly diverse cast, and that remains true which is great. Although one spends so little time with the new cast... they're all just very shallow coded stand ins (20yr old half asian woman with blue hair who is the captain of her ship and the youngest of her crew, who disobeys direct orders because she always knows best, never gets court martial although is threatened with it constantly, plays by the rule of cool, and just kinda stumbles harmlessly through the plot when she is required to with a loyal crew who will follow her to death... because?) is just presented as fact that we must accept. Keanu and Carrie are fine... not great. There's not much for them to do in the script. It's supposed to be about their love for one another, and while they do have chemistry... they're both in the 50s... and that romeo and juliet stuff just rings a little false. The movie's plot doesn't help here... with weird contrivance heaped upon one another until it just leaves no air for it to work. And then suddenly through the power of script writing, it does work. Neo spends most of the movie casting the "shield" spell, and there is a reversal of "Who Can Fly Now"... which isn't explained and feels little pandery. It is a badly made, badly told uninteresting tale. I don't think fans of the original will love this... and I don't know if newcomers (anyone under 25) is going to care.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Honestly, this film felt like a high budget fanfic. The names were there, but the CGI and effects felt like something that a fan would THINK is cool and awesome, but as a AAA flic falls way short.
There are SO many flash backs using footage from the originals, the focus on meta-meta was largely unnecessary. I get it as a plot point, but heavens it was over done.

It had SO MANY great concepts; again really great fanfic, but smashed together made for some unfortunate, lack-luster interactions. The /feel/ of the original trilogy was just absent; like this whole series of events was some kind of surreal dream that the characters will wake up from. Again, it felt like, if you got a bunch of invested tryhard fans, and asked them to make a sequel, THIS is what would come out of it.

They told an interesting world building meta story for the real world, then stopped, didn't expand, and just moved along, causing some of the actor's decisions to feel trivial and meaningless.
They tried really hard, but even the best fanfics feel fan-fic-y if they don't make it its own thing.

It smacks your nostalgia, but doesn't offer the same feel or quality story of the originals. I'm going to pretend this 2.5hour long fanfic doesn't exist and just pretend that the trilogy ended at Revolutions. I'm rating it 2 stars because of the nostalgia factor.

I would NOT recommend this movie, sadly.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. ... Sigh... I really wanted to like this. I appreciated some of the new ideas with futuristic sci-fi technology they implemented, and the progression of the overarching story, I even liked that they hinted at the way society is currently broken under government and media manipulation, but in the end this movie caved in on itself in favor of short-sighted ideological horn-blowing. I consider myself a feminist because I believe men and women deserve equal rights, opportunity and overall consideration. That said, I'm so sick of this trend of film-makers to alter the flow of established stories towards an unbalanced and sexist feminist agenda when it negates and undermines the established story. That's what happened with this movie. Making Neo a worrisome, frail and weakened character was a dumb move, and it crumbled the keystone the franchise was built under. With this in mind (SPOILER ALERT) giving Trinity powers out of absolutely nowhere to have her save the day with NEO cling to her for protection was bad for the story and it hurt the franchise because it made it an ideological set piece rather than a good story. The bit at the very end where Neil Patrick Harris starts spouting off cliche sexist, male-dominant, meme-grade trigger phrases while Trinity beats the crap out of him was just groan-worthy.

Skip it. It's the worst film in the franchise because it just sold out to modern day ideological fanaticism at the expense of being a good movie.

With how dumb this movie is written, you'd think this was some sort of parody or satire of the original movies. But no, they are serious with this movie. They have no idea how humans interact, no idea how fight scenes are done, and relies on pure fan service to save the film.

I'm actually kinda glad I have HBOmax subscription, because seeing this in the theater would've been more waste of money.

It very well may be one of the most meta films I’ve ever seen. Often times, the film feels like a vehicle for Lana, the director, to vent about her frustration with the film industry and Matrix fan base. The Matrix narrative is advanced very little after Matrix Revolutions, but what little is new, is often bizarrely meta or predictable. The action sequences are often heavily inspired if not near recreations of earlier films in the series. My expectations were very low after my disappointment in Revolution, but this film still disappointed me. Easily the worst film in the entire franchise. Avoid altogether. Expand

If we are looking for positives, there are decent special effects and we learn a tiny bit more about the machine world and their motivations. That’s about where it ends. Even the first point about the special effects is countered by the fact that the effects in the first Matrix were pretty revolutionary when it came out, but now in 2021 there is really nothing special and in particular the characters look very silly when they are flying. Next, the endless pointless shooting and fighting scenes in this movie really highlight a fundamental issue with this entire story, which is that it makes no sense for the humans and machines to be fighting in this way. Both the fights themselves and the reason for the fights are severely lacking. There’s are dozens of times in this movie when 10+ guys with automatic weapons are unloading on the good guys from feet away and I’m pretty sure no one got hit by a bullet the entire movie. We are supposed to just accept this because Matrix. As I watched all these nonsensical scenes it really makes you think, why is this even happening. In this future dystopia where machines have enslaved the whole human race, why are they even bothering to punch and shoot each other inside the simulation. It does not appear to be lethal for either side and really just feels pointless and silly. Next, The dialogue was pretty garbage; just lots of cliche throwbacks (“I still know Kung fu” are you kidding me!?) Well I have a lot more thoughts that head into spoiler territory but overall I think this movie was unnecessary and has tarnished the overall quality of the trilogy. I can’t give it a 1 because I made it through the whole movie but damn it was dumb. Expand

I'll tell you how, they edited the film while stoned and laughing at the WB sugar mommas.

After all, this movie is the epitome of getting back at Mom and Dad, who raised the spoiled brats who made this.

I'm actually embarrassed for the folks that created this cringefest. There must be something truly awful going on in Hollywood when you realize just how poor these people are at story telling. What was once an admiral art form has really fallen into something lazy and ugly; the politicization and subversion of everything for the sake of the Twitter mob. The premise of the film was almost interesting but then again, it wasn't executed well at all. I came into this realizing that the blue haired trans was there to tell some woke diversity story and was willing to look past it, but then everything else happened. It was quite boring and I turned it off.

This thing was cringe and lazy.

I'm sure they don't care though. This was probably not meant to be a real film but a middle finger to anyone who ever worked at making something memorable and creative. After all, socialists and communist cannot create...they only consume and destroy.

After watching it twice to give it a fair shake because the first film is nearly perfect, it only boggles the mind more how this film was greenlit. The story does not hold together and also maliciously retcons the previous films openly through actions and endless tedious pretentious exposition. And, it is so convoluted and half-realized that I don't think either the actors or the director truly understood or believed in what they were doing, as though they hadn't rehearsed or honed and edited the script at all beforehand to boil it down to its essence and make a tight script the way the first Matrix was.

There was some sensible commentary about how wokeness and feelings run the Matrix as defined by the new bad guy. This is true, but then the film insists on also being woke. I like the love 'twist' at the end, but it was completely unearned and nonsensical in its execution. This script was extremely dense and needed a year of honing; the verbal exposition walls were insurmountable and infinite...SHOW DON'T TELL.

Ultimately, his was a poorly written Rick-And-Morty/Community hyper-meta deconstruction of the original material with the specific intent of then pouring gasoline on it and setting it on fire for some reason. It was like they were trying to tell their fans that they were somehow wrong for liking the original film multiple times throughout the movie.

I don't blame Keanu or Carrie Ann for doing this favor for their friend to repay his previous kindness and success to them, but they truly should have questioned him more and forced him into a rewrite mode with someone who understands the philosophy and the human condition better because Lana has truly lost the plot, or just lost any sense of reality.

And the CGI and action scenes were fairly mediocre, especially the slow-motion which seemed as though it was done as cheaply as possible for no reason. The more you think about this film, the more you'll dislike it.

So sad to see yet another great franchise be dismantled yet again to pave the way for the dysfunctional dystopia that Hollywood now envisions for the world.

No style, no visuals, mediocre and boring action scenes, bad choreography, mediocre operator work. Special effects are bland, sometimes horrendous, especially when they show robots up close. And we're comparing movies with 18 years of difference.
On top of that, the new actors are all dull. Lame new Morfeus, lame new Smith, lame Merovingian, lame and boring new main heroine and hew crew. Barney Stinson seems like the only good new addition, but he can't carry this trainwreck.
The whole movie feels like a parody - check this out, we can do similar scenes as in the first movie, but worse. Well, good for you, but why don't I just go and watch the first movie then?
And if you ironize about bad unnecessary sequels, it doesn't excuse when you make one yourself.

After a truly bitter first taste the glimpses of 1/2 of the Wachowski genius started to seep in through the cracks. A taste of brilliance here, a dash of somewhat decent writing there, before I began to slowly settle in to what this movie has to offer. Unfortunately the small taste was all this film had going for it. I stand firmly in the camp of not completely disliking either Reloaded or Revolutions. To put them next to this film makes both hated sequels to an undeniable classic seem like Empire and Return of the Jedi. The Matrix Resurrections is a deeply flawed picture. It begs the question if it should exist at all. So much of the style, the exciting life of the former movies of the late 90's and early 2000's had is nowhere to be seen. The writing plops off the page like wet dog excrement. Iconic characters are recast for the worse. Action set pieces and, god forbid I say it, kung fu action sequences the previous films were known for are completely absent in favor of cheap, jump cutting "thrills". There was perhaps a solid 10 minutes of decent storytelling near the middle of the film that shone a bit brighter amongst the miasma before it inevitably took a nose dive into mediocrity. All in all the film is a shocking mockery of the franchise, built to fail. Expand

The film doesn't take itself seriously at all and it often times pokes fun and takes stabs at itself. What the heck, this isn't what a matrix movie should be like.

They replaced both Agent smith and Morpheus with new actors that doesn't act like them at all - Morpheus acts like a jester while agent Smith looks like a ivy league tennis player.....Reeves' acting is so wooden here and both him and Moss looks tired and uninterested throughout the movie...

And somehow the CGI has gotten worse since 1999.

Suffers from Hollywood corporate wokeness as well, a clear reflection of the director's personal issues and warped view of the world. The only 2 white male characters are villains played by gay actors, and somehow the machines are misogynistic; fighting them is unsubtly fighting the patriarchy. Lines like "you women used to be so much easier to control." Just garbage.

The cover song of Rage Against The Machine during the end credits was a perfect summation of the movie. I've never jumped for the remote before to stop a song from playing during end credits. This sounded like the director's daughter did a cover on a USB microphone and emailed it in.

This film is content to leech off the original trilogy and has almost nothing to offer in the way of new ideas. New characters are almost entirely forgettable as they have little chance to make an impact on viewers. The whole thing is just really up its own ass and goes as far as literally winking at the audience to one of its countless references. There have been a lot of legacy sequels stuffed with fan service lately, but this one really cranks it up a notch. In the first half of the movie there are quite a few times footage from the original movie appears, they even had Neo watching it himself. It's all too much. But sadly that original footage just highlights how much worse this new movie looks. Beyond the story the movie just does not have the look of the classic movies. The scenes in the 'real' world do try to capture the look of the original films, but the stuff in the Matrix is bland, neither congruent with the old movies or establishing its own identity. Even the action scenes are mostly uninspired, at times downright cheap, and never hold up to the standards set by the original trilogy. Ultimately this movie feels like a waste of time, a nearly joyless retread of the classic movies that neither lives up to the quality of the original Matrix trilogy nor has any original ideas of its own. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first act had abhorrent cringe boomer dialogue left and right that never stopped. Do the creators and writers think other studios are made up of obnoxious idiots that always know better than consumers. 4th wall being broken in a Matrix movie is cool if done right, however this movie just touts how good the older ones were and never stops, and calls out other tech companies to ad nauseum. -This movie has little parts that are good but it doesn't feel like "matrix", nothing feels like there is any real stake in anything they are doing. IO (Zion) feels lifeless, you see no other real people besides the military group and the backdrop of the city. Machine city doesn't show the higher machine being from the third movie (like the hierarchy of machines couldn't be bothered to see wtf is going on). Smith and his DSI have this weird mesh of personality where Smith keeps calling Neo "Tom"???and not "Mr.Anderson" helps then dips. Trinity doesn't do anything till the very end and her arc felt rushed and not as hyped as it should've been. Neo feels like he had nothing to do even though he was doing things. -I guess there is going to be more movies, its ok to be modern, but do it with a sense of self, when Bladerunner 2049 came out it wasn't trying to be hip, it filled a hole that the 1980 version left beautifully. This movie is trying to be everything and not succeeding in any way. Expand

I was hoping we'd get a close up of Keanau Reeves' hairy **** but it turns out this movie is quite homophobic. The graphics are pretty good if you have a decent card in your rig. Five stars.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Never the fan of original matrix. Story of this movie was whatever, not interesting, not bad. Worldbuilding expansion of original kinda interesting. Cute robots alies. Robot vs robot **** Not bad, im into this stuff. SJW **** sure, a lot, but white couple in the middle - that would be considered ultraright or smth these days. Mocking the fans of original, big no no, but still that's not about me.

Overall - no.

The movie is a convoluted mess trying to add more layers to the already complex world of Matrix. And it fails. There is barely enough story to drive this forward, the dialogue is really akward, there is too much stuff cramped into it, the constand referencing of the first movie is annoying... I honestly don't know where start/stop complaining because I'm still not sure what I have seen. I even didn't realize the movie is over, I had no idea that was supposed to be the climax of the movie. Apart from all these issues, what bothers me even more, the style is simply gone. Enemies are dressed like clowns and where the original made you believe they can evade bullets, I constantly had the feeling they are now jumping into the bullets. Expand

The Matrix Reloaded was inadequate, the Matrix Revolutions was irredeemable, but this is absolutely inexcusably, incomprehensibly bad.

A convoluted, incoherent mash up of conflicting story, inane dialogue, banal action set pieces and atrocious acting. Some scenes are so overwhelmingly awful that they feel like a genuine student-made parody film.

Two stars awarded for reminding me with all its pretentious metacinematic tripe just how great the original film was.

The final scene is laughable. They are trying to bait us for a sequel of this! Hilarious.

Every fight scene does not advance the plot. There is no character interaction, just punching each other.

The main "crux" of the story is the love between Neo and Trinity. They focus on worst part about all the previous movies.

Trailers made me hopefull. I thought this would tell some metaverse story, they would explain something about the real world being a 2nd level of the matrix. They could focus on quantum computing and make the world much broader and deeper, while explaining new sci-fi concepts.

First matrix was deeper and more technologically advanced than most viewers. This one is stuck in the past, and is far dumber than most people watching it. This is honestly an embarassment, and im embarassed i have seen it. Hopefully the sequelbate wont come true, because i cant imagine them somehow making an even less thoughtfull movie than this.
