Resurrections is easily mistaken for a marvel superhero movie. 2 hours and 28 minutes of unnecessary scenes and boring jokes, which even for me, a big fan of the franchise, got tired of watching the movie halfway through. Yes, it has good points like good special effects, good music and good acting, but that stand out only for the budget of the movie, after all this was the minimum to be given to the fan. Definitely a 5 out of 10. Expand

Where do I start? The supporting cast was pretty cringe all around, Keanu was being himself, Neal Patrick Harris couldn't even save the movie, at the end I was like HUH?! It's so bonkers mediocre I don't even try to be eloquent anymore.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The matrix back 1999, was way ahead of its time, bringing lots of new ideas for technical point of view and storytelling point of view. The matrix reloaded and revolutions are also excellent movies. During my rewatch before going to resurrections, this was opinion about the trillogy. The matrix ressurrections however is a type of parody of first 3 movies, which I am really suprised. Why would someone wants to do this? What was the purpose behind it? The matrix 1-2-3 was so cool back in the day. This one lost its magical touch, this is the main problem with the movie. In order to be objective, I’ll share my pros and cons so let the readers decide:

Pros: swarm, progs can be in physical form (morpheus), neo and trinity, resurrection scenes (remaking the bodies of neo and trinity), meroviengian, but thats pretty much it :(

Cons: The analyst, Smith (Is he also ressurrected?), new characters, old niobe, new morpheus, fight scenes, action scenes, music, visual effects, new zion, the matrix as a game, neros fat friend in the office, trinity’s family, red pill blue pill, so many old scenes from trilogy…and many more.

Conclusion: this also happened to star wars. Exactly 1:1. Now how and who will save the matrix…

In 'resurrection' everything is pretty much a standard movie - it's 'face value' from beginning to end. In the great final scene a 'voice over' narrator is telling you, what is going on while it happens - tryi ng to fit a ‘this is how we are going to rob the bank’ plotting in to the mix. 'Resurrection' introduces an ironic self-disclosure twist trying to make fun of the taoist philosophy the the original one - it gives you an easy laugh but does not bring anything to the table.
Matrix 4 is unfortunately a missed opportunity for us to go deeper into the rabbit hole. - big missed opportunity.

Its a real shame as there was an opportunity here to explore the material from the animatrix/matrix trilogy/enter the matrix and create something truly unique.

Instead we get a sub par action scifi film that reads more like a tv pilot from the twilight zone with a higher than average vfx budget. The opening segment of the movie also seems to openly mock the original trilogy fans which i found quite pretentious.

I consider the original trilogy high art with some of the most groundbreaking visual effects, soundtrack and fight sequences put to celluloid but with this movie i honestly struggle to wrap my head around what lana was thinking to achieve with this sub par production.

It is a watchable boring mess of a film.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just recently rewatched all the matrix trilogy and was pleasantly surprised how well the movies aged, the action cinematography, story and characters were all extremely entertaining to watch. However upon watching the matrix 4 its very apparent that regardless of its 'self aware meta humour' the movie does not feel like a matrix movie. The original Mr Smith and morphius actors are replaced which creates a massive distraction in the film as I don't think their acting performances are as compelling. All the side characters are boring and get little to no development and the third act of the film completely falls apart with a weak villain and the only compelling story is between neo and trinity who reprise their roles amazingly but the script fails to support them. The final reveal in the movie is that trinity is the one or that neo and trinity are both the one which is a fine reveal but it's executed poorly, the action scenes are also messy as there is a lot of shaky cam which doesn't compare well to the well choreographed fight scenes in the original film. Overall as someone who is a matrix fan I found the film disappointing and for me the worst one. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Looking at the reviews I feel like I was overly harsh so here's the most fair review I can write sans political angling by both “woke” and anti-woke people(both of which have no place in constructive criticism): Resurrections is definitely watchable but mostly retread ground, it ends up being a poor facsimile of what came before it. The ending feels unearned because of poor character development throughout. Here’s my personal list of nitpicks:

-The first 20 minutes are pure cringe. The writer clearly had no idea how to resurrect Neo and went overly meta with a game designer identity even name dropping Warner Brothers and referring to bullet-time repeatedly.

-The slick action is gone and replaced with what seems to be endless incoherent pseudo-intellectual rambling.

-The slick Cinematography is gone, the Matrix isn’t even tinted green anymore to differentiate it from the real world.

-The fight choreography is just bad and the jumpy editing doesn’t save it.

-It feels the need to continuously justify its existence via visual callbacks to the original.

-Neil Patrick Harris was an absolutely terrible pick for the analyst. I’m still not clear what his character’s job even was.

-The surrogate for Morpheus is so meta it becomes pure cringe, even making fun of the original. I actually liked Smith’s surrogate though, well done there.

-The exiles scene made no sense, they were throwaway characters to begin with. Just why?

-Neo is now too powerful despite the matrix being reset and his amnesia.

-For me the ending was thouroughly predictable given the clear pattern throughout the film of every male character being overly emotional and every female character being cool and calculated. Sadly because of this in the end Trinity’s ascension just doesn’t feel earned primarily because the suffering was all Neo’s and always had been. The only way in which Trinity even remotely can be said to have “earned” this power is her being stuck in an identity she hated and that wasn’t her, finally she finds freedom and becomes her true self(i.e. clearly the writer’s surrogate character which is not bad just poorly done).

-Finally: while this is likely unintentional on the writer’s part the ending feels like a middle-finger to Matrix fans where the writer assumes as fans we are all only interested in male saviors and that “it’s time for change”, which for me is untrue. I’m interested in well written stories and fleshed out characters in which saviors, regardless of gender, deserve to be saviors because of the trials they went through. Had Trinity been the main character instead of Neo and went through what Neo went through she fully would have deserved that power and the film would have been better for it! In fact I am surprised that route wasn’t taken.

A big ole slab of memberberry pie a la meta. Add to it the almost expected gender swap, which is still more tactfully handled than Ghostbusters or Oceans 8. Not shocked given the creators.

I did like the video game angle and more importantly, though underutilized, the sentient digital angle. The idea of a weird singularity where computer programs gain sentience and go to the real world is intriguing. But in the end, that little glimmer of hope and creativity is subsumed in crappy action and forgettable effects.

There's something here, just like there was something in the latter two sequels, but it's just not up to the original movie. Lot of action, hipster clothes, and silly hairdoos, but little substance.

I really would have preferred a prequel here. Something like the episodes in The Animatrix detailing the original war between humanity and machines. That could've been a whole new trilogy explaining all the gobbelty-goop of Revolutions.

I'm going to have to watch it a couple more times but it felt like a remake that didnt need to happen. Calling people bots just made it seem like it wasn't our world people were living in, more like NPC's in free guy, which just goes against what the matrix movies are IMO. I understand it was still human people but calling them bots was just dumb

I may be overly harsh because I expected a lot , or I may be kind because I liked the trilogy , only time will tell what everyone thinks of it, but I can only give it a 5/10 and even that does feel a little kind on my behalf. Make it a 48/100 lol.

I thought the cast was fine enough, but the 2nd half didn't feel like there were consequences for anyone's actions. Remember the original trilogy? This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well... I wanna like it, but its not great, even bad in direct comparison to the originals. The biggest problem i have with this movie is that they are trying to reboot the matrix with a mix of fresh character and old ones from the original trilogy while heavily relying on the nostalgia factor to make the whole experience more palatable instead of actually trying to introduce something completely new. The story isn't really intuitive nor does it invoke the same feelings or atmosphere as the originals despite them trying really hard to do so and maybe that's one of the problems here that they are trying way way too hard.

The plot itself is rather flat and almost comical with the ultimate motives the main villain has, which is a shame considering one of the main aspect of the originals was that it animated the viewer to think and question. I did however like the overall look of the movie, it doesn't have the typical green hue the originals had but that didn't bother me too much, the fight scenes were not that good but i liked the music. The chosen outfits of the characters left something to be desired and the dialogs especially in the first act of the movie range from alright to pure cringe. Overall i'd say its a less then average experience, if you liked the originals you are better off just rewatching those and yes that includes 2 and 3 because they are still better then this. Its not amazing by any stretch and i already approached it with the expectation that it was certainly not gonna be anywhere near as good as Matrix 1 and even then the few expectations i did have were let down. And who in the world decided that Neo should never even touch a gun throughout the whole movie? Matrix literally created the iconic "Guns, lots of guns." quote. Just watch the originals, this is certainly not the worst movie in existence but the originals are just so much better.

The only thing that gave me hope was that one of the directors from the original MatrixWhen I heard that they were making a 4th Matrix movie, I was baffled. The Matrix Revolution (2003) ended fine even if the movie itself was a mixed bag. The only thing that gave me hope was that one of the directors from the original Matrix trilogy was returning. The premise is "To find out if his reality is a physical or mental construct, Mr. Anderson, aka Neo, will have to choose to follow the white rabbit once more. If he's learned anything, it's that choice, while an illusion, is still the only way out of -- or into -- the Matrix. Neo already knows what he has to do, but what he doesn't yet know is that the Matrix is stronger, more secure and far more dangerous than ever before". So should it have been resurrected or stay shut down?

One of the things I liked in this movie was the ideas that were explored. In the first act of the movie, it's revealed that Thomas (Keanu Reeves) created a very popular trilogy of games; The Matrix Trilogy. It then becomes incredibly meta and self-aware which was oddly enjoyable. The film also explores some things that have changed since The Matrix Revolution (2003). A lot of these were very interesting and I am glad that it didn't feel like nothing came of Neo and Trinity's sacrifice. The world of the Matrix has changed and the "real life" world has also changed. The changes for both were no doubt very compelling to watch. Keanu and Carrie return as Neo and Trinity respectively. It was great to see them both and I find the chemistry between the two to still be there. Out of the new characters, I love Jessica Henwick who plays Bugs. She is the cool rebellious character who would break the rules for the right thing. I also think Yahya Abdul-Mateen II who plays the new Morpheus is also great in the role. He does a good job of giving off a similar vibe to that of Laurence Fishburne, the original Morpheus. However, this new Morpheus feels so inconsequential to the story that I wondered why they even bothered having Morpheus in the film. Likewise, Jonathan Groff plays the new Smith and I just don't understand why. Like the new Morpheus, the new Smith is also very inconsequential to the story and just feels like he is just kind of there for nostalgia bait. Unlike Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jonathan does not feel like Hugo Weaving, the original Smith. So it is very jarring when he is on screen and is spouting lines like he is supposed to be Smith when it does not feel like it whatsoever. Both of these two could've just been entirely new characters. It also annoys me that the director didn't just bring back both Laurence and Hugo if they were planning on bringing both their characters back. Laurence and Hugo, to me, are both also important people to the Matrix franchise. The story didn't work well for me either. The first act is being self-aware about how studios love milking franchises and not doing anything bold with it. Yet this film does the exact thing it is trying to criticize. After the first act, it becomes a very generic story about saving the girl and stopping the bad guy which is disappointing. The first act also retreads a lot of the same beat for beat stuff that was in the first Matrix film. The main character notices things are off, he then meets a person who convinces him the world is fake, the mirror sequence, the red pill and blue pill stuff, the learning Kung Fu sequence. It is also felt odd having to hear the characters explain the concept of the Matrix again even though this is the 4th entry and most people watching this would already know that. The movie also has way too much exposition and people explaining things. There are moments where I felt like I was being bombarded with way too much information. Sometimes it feels like it would be better to show and not tell but this film does a lot of telling.

Another aspect that made the Matrix trilogy stand out was the iconic action sequences. However, they are incredibly boring in this film. The hand-to-hand fight scenes are overly edited with quick cuts that made it irritating to watch. There are no cool long shots like in the original Matrix trilogy. The choreography is just not that great and it feels weak. What makes it worse is that a lot of the action scenes just has Neo use some kind of force push power which screams lazy. The visuals and music score are fine but they do lack impact and are not memorable either. The film also includes a lot of flashbacks and footage from the older Matrix movies and I find it a little annoying. It feels like they were trying to beat it into the audiences head "remember this!".

In the end, I came out of this thinking that they shouldn't have made the 4th film. It did not feel like a story that was worth telling. This film is just pandering towards peoples nostalgia and it does not do a good job at it either. I don't know if this is a start of a new Matrix trilogy but if it is, I am not very optimistic about this new direction.

Not a safe, but still unnecessary sequel to the Matrix trilogy. It's a shame that nothing in this film works as well as it should. Not the action, not the plot, not the references, not the characters.

In the first leg of the film, Resurrections seems like it's trying to be a self aware satire of the industry and tribute to the original film; yet this dynamic fades away quickly, and eventually changes to just a boring, poorly paced retread of the franchise's tropes without any of the charm. Once the second act starts, this movie just runs out of energy. Story beats from the original film are dug up and re-used in just the right way to feel genuinely pointless without even invoking nostalgia. The way characters are re-introduced, (especially the ones played by different actors)feels inorganic, and ultimately just comes across as futile. These returning characters feel like bad imitations of themselves, and the actual backstory linking the events of the previous films seems forced; the fact that this was never planned when the original series was made is painfully clear. Even if you can look past the disappointing plot the action scenes this series is known so well for really don't do much to come across as special in this one. While there are some memorable moments, the spectacle in this movie is at best almost on par with the original series, and at its worst incomprehensible. TL;DR This movie is competently made, and in the beginning genuinely interesting, but it quickly devolves into uninspired rehashes of what's come before, which fail to ever achieve the same level of significance or even spectacle as the original films. A must see for Matrix fans!

For the casual or non Matrix, this is not meant to be a pure action flick and does have quite a bit of complexity. You really have to pay attention, and likely have to watch it more than once.

Not a complete disaster but a number of stylistic and artistic choices kept dragging it down. The story smacked very heavily of soft reboot despite their Adaptation-style lampshading of it. Fight scenes were truly awful; the camera was constantly far too close for some reason, as though directed by someone who did not direct the Matrix. Music sounded royalty-free. Jada Pinkett-Smith in old makeup... Named robot characters that have no use except to high-five someone once... A nearly incomprehensible reason to bring Neo and Trinity back... G.I. Joe gunfights like never before... Very awkward dialogue between Neo and Trinity that made me feel like a friend was making a social faux pas... These are some of the oddities. It's not that the original trilogy was Citizen Kane or something (the dialogue was cringey from day one), but other than some weird story structure in the sequels it was at least well-shot, characters' motivations were comprehensible, the music was highly memorable, and it didn't tackle too many themes at once.

Just imagine the Matrix, but:
1. Music's bad
2. There are no monologue-worthy actors, but there are still monologues
3. Action scenes are all zoomed in, you have no idea what's happening
4. The story is at least as convoluted as Reloaded and Revolutions, characters seem to do stuff for no real reason
5. Keanu Reeves talks about painting the sky with rainbows in his weird deadpan

In a word, bizarre. Just think of your least favorite Matrix and all the reasons it was your least favorite and this has more of that.

I've found all of the installments to be long-winded exercises in metaphysically oriented intellectual masturbation broken up periodically by stylish action sequences and glitzy special effects. And, regrettably, this latest sequel is mostly more -- a lot more -- of the same, a picture that could have easily (and more accurately) been titled "Another Matrix Movie." What's especially disappointing here is that the film actually starts out with some promise, presenting a narrative in which the picture hints at being a delightful send-up of itself. It also includes some interesting allusions to the lack of meaningful distinctions in contemporary political forces and the public's often-sheep-like responses to the dictates of officialdom. And there's some pleasant humor served up in the supporting performances of Neil Patrick Harris and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. However, despite these fine attributes, this overlong slog runs out of steam quickly, relying on nostalgic flashbacks from the franchise's previous installments and trotting out an increasingly tiring series of explosions, fights and bombastic special effects to carry a story that becomes so convoluted it's hard to imagine it holding anyone's attention (even those who are metaphysically oriented like yours truly). At bottom, there seems to be little to characterize this latest sequel other than it being a vehicle to provide its distributor with yet another cash cow and director Lana Wachowski (sans sibling Lilly) with an opportunity to redeem herself in Hollywood circles (at least at the box office) after several disappointing outings. As a consequence, though, the film fails to deliver much of anything new, fresh or exciting, instead presenting viewers with a release that might have been more aptly called "The Matrix Retreads." I was affraid to see an LGBTQ+ propaganda or some PC **** and it was not not the case, so at least one good point (even though you could argue that there is a lot of implied messages about the transcandance of the gender through the machines etc...).
My main problem is the film in itself. It feels "odd" or "out of place". I did not believe a single second in the new Matrix update that is now Yellowish. I thought it was too warm for me. But also Keanu... what a useless dumb f in is Avatar form. It looks like the director asked him to play the Keanu Reeves from the Cyberpunk 2077 E3 presentation in 2019 ! Back bent, clumsy and always with this agape face... What a disappointment. Also the movie is pretty predictible and the plot is... How to say it... Kind of "meh". Sure there are some interesting shots but, not much more. Also I realised when the movie ended that Neo NEVER EVER Touched a single gun... I don't know if they are trying to differ John Wick from The Matrix but for me it's a shame.
Overall I did not have high expectations but it's far from good even if not catastrophic. I'll just re watch the masterpiece from 1999 that had in my opinion far better VFX in terms of creativity and grittyness.

It was a fun watch and Keanu was great, but this had a completely different vibe compared to the original trilogy, which I didn’t mind too much but I can see why a lot of people don’t like it. Much less doomsday and a lot more comical. It really bothers me though that the ending leaves room for more sequels, which at this point would just feel like a cash grab. We got a happy albeit stereotypical ending, so for the love of god just let it end there. It was a nice nostalgia trip but more movies past this would just be beating a dead horse. Expand

It would feel way out of place but the director has stated there was no plan.. and it feels like that's the truth. So unfortunately the winner here is "Money"$$$. I wish it weren't so ridiculously true but it is $$$. Not so much for some of the actors who believe in what there doing but with the hap hazard mess this movie is... It feels like the movie and gaming are now hand in hand with the "plan" release nostalgia that's underdeveloped and overtly PC resulting in "money" made while basically picking the carcass of whatever story has a cult following and killing it for another 10+ year wait till they do it again. Not one to want to be so negative people do get reboots and or retries right. Blade Runner 2049, Dune, and Mad Max F.R. come to mind. So not all is so bleak but it seems like a 1 and 10 shot for most of these retreads. Expand

The Matrix Resurrections feels like a Matrix movie for a new generation, with the story elements of the first two films. i understand that the point of the Matrix itself is to be a cycle but do they have to follow most of the same beats?

i don't dislike the movie, i just thought it would offer more because of the new concepts they introduced but then i took a step back and realized that most of the things they introduced were just a setup for sequels and possibly spin offs. i do want to see more of the Matrix franchise but i felt this was just kind of disappointing, to long and just a little boring and bland.

i like this film but i was hoping for more. the acting was pretty bad and the characters from the previous franchise were either underused or just poorly written and the new villains were all bad, but that's just my opinion. i think the franchise should be handed off to new hands to see what new writers and directors can do with it. maybe a new group of creators can bring new life to the franchise.

p.s. the Visual Effects were better than I thought they were going to be and i really want to see more of the new characters because they were the most interesting thing in this film.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It feels like the synopsis of a really great 4 hour movie. It lacked flow and seemed to skip tonnes of exposition. The writing was sloppy and cinematography lacked any nuance. The story, CGI and action is great though. The movie makes sense from a chronological standpoint, but there a many leaps in the timing. For example: The first time Morpheus attempts to contact Neo is immediately followed by a 2nd attempt - it feels like a complete scene is missing between them. Perhaps the directors cut will be more compelling. Expand

Especially in the beginning the movie entertains some interesting ideas. Being incredibly self-aware and meta the movie reflects on the legacy of the Matrix movies and ponders where a sequel should go next.
The initial premise is also interesting: What if the Matrix was just a piece of fiction designed by a mentally ill game dev? Once again the movie makes us doubt what is real and what is fake. And in those moments I think Matrix Ressurections really shines.
However, especially in the second half it all falls apart and just seems like mediocre nostalgia bait. There is little agency, there are way too many pointless cameos and callbacks to the previous movies and ultimately the movie doesn't seem to have much to say after the initial points it raises in the first hour of its runtime

It's a damn shame that they couldn't take the initial premise and take it into a new exciting direction rather than just rehashing the old stuff.
The potential was there. I think a lot of the new characters were actually fairly likeable (e.g. Bugs or the Psychiatrist) but ultimately they get sidelined so that we can see an aging Neo and Trinity in action again (by the way, the action is also not as great as the previous movies either).

All in all a huge letdown. There are some highs but also lots of lows. I think it's a bit better than Matrix Revolutions but definitely worse than the original or even Matrix Reloaded

When it was announced that another sequel is coming, I was mostly indifferent about it because that is just Hollywood now, anything can be brought back. When the first full trailer dropped for The Matrix Resurrections, it piqued my interest a bit but I didn't get hyped or had high hopes even if some of the original cast is returning as well as one of the creators i.e Lana Wachowski because, in this day and age, it is more likely to be a letdown. And as it turns out, that was precisely the case. This is, without a doubt, the worst movie in the franchise. BUT I was pleasantly surprised that after seeing the negative reception from a lot of people it wasn't an outright terrible experience for me and I ended up enjoying several parts of it even if I wouldn't call the movie good but rather a middling to above-average experience owing to my predisposition and fanboy bias towards this world.

Returning to the world of The Matrix after more than 20 years certainly carried a hefty dose of nostalgia and it was plainly enjoyable simply being thrust back into that realm. Seeing Keanu Reeves as Neo again lit up the fan in me. Having to deal with the matrix again and retreading events from the first one, despite being an obvious nostalgia bait, was entertaining especially when the movie was self-aware about it and had a meta-narrative going on. In fact, the time spent in the matrix during the first half was probably my favourite, especially when you view it from the machines or The Analyst's POV. It would have been wonderful to have Laurence Fishburn and Hugo Weaving reprising their roles but the replacement for Morpheus, Yahya Adul-Mateen II, wasn't bad. Felt like a hip version of Morpheus. Can't say the same for the new Agent Smith but he did bring some unintentional hilarity, so there's that. In fact, there was a lot of comedy relative to the previous parts, both intentional and unintentional. Some of it worked, a lot of it didn't with some scenes being pure cringe as was the case with a certain cameo.

You get a new crew of characters but apart from Jessica Henwick's character Bugs, none of them were interesting or had any proper presence. The only connection I felt was that several of the actors were from Sense8, a series I happen to like. The performances were fine, including Neil Patrick Harris and Carrie-Anne Moss returning as Trinity. The second half of the movie deals more with the real world and at first, I was enjoying seeing how things have developed after Revolutions. There were intriguing tidbits and scarce info dumps as well as developments which I liked and I was wishing the movie would explore more but it was busy rushing on with its own clunky main plot. Maybe they are saving it for further sequels which I'm not sure they'll even get a greenlit on. To make matters worse, the movie, regrettably, leaned too heavily on the nostalgia baiting and dangling keychains instead of balancing it out. It was spread out throughout the runtime with the most egregious one being flashbacks of scenes from the previous movies which acted as a constant reminder that while you're back in this world, it's nowhere near as well-executed, a self-inflicted detrimental element. The element that actually disappointed me the most was the audiovisual experience, something I expected we would at least get in a strong manner even if all else fails. The action, while being fine-ish for a modern Hollywood big-budget movie, was way too poorly executed in comparison to the previous films. The trilogy was known for its Martial Arts and Gun action and you hardly get anything of the former while a flimsy toned down version of the latter with stormtrooper aim dialled up the highest level as if the operator has hacked the matrix and is purposely making the bad guys miss every shot. The biggest sin was having the now John Wick at your disposal and not giving him a gun throughout the movie or having any scene with Neo going all out and instead relegating him mostly to force push and pull. There was also no real tension or actual danger/threat in the movie. All in all, this was a clunky and messily executed amalgamation of some cool ideas and concepts, new and old, and a trip down memory lane which kept it from diving into the abyss further propelled a bit by my inner fan bias of this world. By no means a good movie and after pondering upon it for a while, I can certainly see where the hate is coming from. If you're a massive fan of the trilogy, you might enjoy it but if you only like/love the first one and didn't enjoy the sequels, chances are this won't bring your mind around. And if I were to rate it, I'd give it a 6/10.

And I think that afterBeyond my expectations as a massive fan, I see this film as a very late coda to the saga for reasons that Lana Wachowski herself has expressed and that have to do with her grief and loss over the death of her parents. And I think that after all these years, she wanted to give her most iconic characters an ending that could be called happy.
Even without the involvement of her sister Lili Wachowski.

It abuses of its metafiction plot quite a bit, and the excellent fight sequences are completely absent, but that has a lot to do with its own meta-assimilation that permeates all its elements, so it's part of the process, especially since at least I wasn't expecting more of the same from the trilogy, and the trailers had made it clear that that wasn't the main goal of this new adventure.

The social and philosophical critique isn't really clever, but at least it provokes the plot to be aware of itself as the final realization that humanity prefers the facade of the Matrix, although ultimately, it doesn't really contribute to anything transcendental or emblematic like the original film. And that's to be expected.

The Matrix Resurrections is the film I expected it to be. An unnecessary addition perhaps, but I don't see it as a throwaway.
It could have been much, much worse, and that doesn't exempt it from anything, but to say I was bored or disappointed is not in my vocabulary when it comes to this story.

The first half-hour is almost promising, with them re-framing the previous trilogy in an interesting way, but soon we find out it's essentially an inferior remake masquerading as a sequel. The acting is poor, the script tries to be profound occasionally, but it's running on an empty, spent tank. The fight scenes are janky and stiff, and the CGI is good, but who cares when the fights are so clumsy? There's really nothing here but a steaming pile of WHY DID THIS GET MADE?

And the final scene has the AUDACITY to think they can launch a series of this crap.

It was enjoyable enough to watch in the latter half and there are overall some great ideas at play but certainly I spent most of the first half wondering just when the characters were going to go full on do a 4th wall break.
And while the remaining Wachowski can competently deliver a movie, having so many fan service "greatest hits" moments (very much like GB:A) actually makes the movie feel like a tired retread of old ideas in a fan fiction then a new canonical work. Acting overall was pretty good with NPH almost outright stealing the movie. The "twist" was predictable given the source and undermines the previous movies somewhat. Overall this falls somewhere between returns and revolutions so the 3rd best in the franchise.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Matrix....delivered as a student movie.

The beginning was thrilling, the initial thrill of here we are, again, back in The Matrix, we are experiencing a loop the Matrix rebuilding itself and the cycle repeating...the suddenly...wtf is that haircut on the kid? They are fans?? Ewwww.
O.K. the situation is changing. Hmmmm.

The premise surprised me, but it did grow on me in the first act as we see Keanu as a game designer, and the struggle between his 'real' memories and the fiction of the world he 'created'. The flashbacks were working, I felt intrigued. This is the strongest element of the new film. The concept and rescue of Trinity is a solid idea. It pains me to say they couldn't follow through.

The Annalist was a good choice...but only for a bit part; The 'new' Smith is a disaster. I felt he was completely non threatening and totally unconvincing. The lack of a genuinely threatening 'bad guy' completely pulled me out of the film every time the characters of Smith and the Annalist were on screen. Horrible casting (sorry/not sorry guys), and badly written.

The horrible section with the Merovingian was truly, utterly, devastatingly bad. The action scenes were poorly executed (although Keanu moves well) the feeling was this was produced by Uni students using The Matrix style as inspiration and having got the cast stoned enough decided to shoot a scene.

The return of Trinity was exhilarating, but her rescue...which should have been the sole focus of the film was so badly done. Show, don't tell! We had to endure horrid exposition cut up with scenes of what was being described, in what should have been the focal point of the whole film; an exhilarating, risky attempt to rescue Trinity in the 'real' world.

The experience, as a huge fan of the originals, gets a barely pass mark. Neo and Trinity re-united for a Happy Ending could have worked. But it feels like the film was miscast, lacked any real threat, and didn't go deep enough. It looks like it was shot for TV, and the whole zombie hoard 'swarm' vibe was still born.

The story itself was good. I can see why they wanted to tell it. It could have worked with better attention to the writing; ultimately this is NOT the matrix we were looking for...it's a pale facsimile, a low resolution copy in an era of High definition I-Max blockbusters.

I give it a 6 purely for seeing Neo and trinity on screen.

↓ point rating ↓

Not bad for a movie done during covid, but thats not saying much. It seems the whole budget was spent on cgi, there was really only one, short, fight scene near the begining of the movie so it does not seem that any martial arts specialists were consulted in this film to choreography anything, lots of cgi bullets though and explosions. Also, no drama, no one dies not even a single program so this is like a super campy version of the matrix however i am still holding out for a good movie from Keanu in John Wick 4.

Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I like the attempt at a super meta sequel, but it falls flat. Kind of wish the film had continued on with the first half premise and done away with the return to reality/rescue trinity part. Could have been interested to just have a whole film where its Keanu trying to figure out what's real and then maybe just at the end bring some actual doubt of reality into things. Might have left things open for an 5th film. Expand

So let's be clear it was ok as in average. Not good or bad. Just meh. For fans of keanu Reeves and the matrix enjoyable at times. At times.

The cgi is poor and the sound and music forgettable. The action scenes are bland and confusing. The story is very messy but with interesting ideas poorly executed. The acting was good but only in that they all tried their best but didn't have much to do. Keanu and Carrie look great as older people which is nice (for them). Laurence Fishboner doesnt return because Lana doesnt like him but that scientology nut returns...Will Smiths wife and she's quite good. Hugo Weaving was meant to be in M4 but also had a falling out with Lana so his part is played by that chap from Mindhunter. The problem with this is Hugo is meant to be part of a story twist but they forget to make changes to accomdate the new actor swap so the twist falls flat leaving audiences confused.

But it's a very odd film and not what you expect. A middle age love story in some ways. The ending is surprisingly romantic. But the two have no chemistry or even less than they had before but I get the feeling they respect each other which is nice. Though trinity is the new lead but she doesn't have one scene without keanu which seems odd. For a film about female empowerment the latter is contrary to that theme. The problem is...I believe Warners were going to make this film. Without Lana and Lilly (who co made 1-3). And (now) sister Lilly, wisely said 'no I've done that and dont wish to return'. So Lana made this film I believe partly out of spite. She is on record saying she 'didn't want to make it but she did under duress' clearly to stop others from tampering with some thing so personal to her and her transition / life journey. And honestly ...this is very prevalent in much of the writing... especially in the middle. They literally do a meta parody naming Warners and stating they are forcing Keanu (Lana) to make matrix 4 (video game) and he (she) says I don't want to and they insist so keanu (lana) considers suicide. I mean that's some fudged up ship. Then keanu (lana) says I feel i put too much of myself in the games (films). So this entire film is kind of a middle finger to the studio and sadly it's to the films detriment. It could have been cleverly interwoven into the matrixverse but instead it's likely intentionally blunt with a possible wish to kill the franchise. I feel the fans deserved more but who really cares as we can watch the first 3 any time we like.

So when...if ...you watch 'The Matrix 23: ReReLoadedRevolutionsRenovations' maybe consider all this and you'll have an easier time understanding what the hell is going on. But you'll still be confused as much of it is a confusing mess....But possibly this is the one time in a film that the mess is intentional. A mixed bad 5/10 better than I thought it be

At least it felt somewhat like a Matrix film in concept but not visually. I don’t mean the visuals are bad. The visual effects look good and so does the cinematography but it’s missing that iconic green tint. This is obviously a minor issue but it impacts the film a lot. The green tint is iconic to the trilogy and it not being here makes the film feel like it’s lacking something. A lot of this film feels like it’s lacking. The story is really weak and contrived and it’s meta commentary is awful. It’s possible to do meta commentary on your own films/genre right, look to the Scream films for that, but it’s awful here. They make fun of the tropes but then do the exact same thing without a hint of irony. It feels like they forgot there was meta commentary to this film. It’s my biggest issue with this film and it really drags it down. Some of the action doesn’t necessarily suck but it isn’t great either. It’s hard to tell what is going on and it’s filmed in such a bland way. The performances are fine. Keanu Reeves is being Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Ann Moss is fine. Neil Patrick Harris and Jonathan Groff are standouts but I take issue with their characters. Groff plays Hugo Weaving’s role from the original films but he just kinda starts being Agent Smith. There isn’t any build up prior and he just becomes him. The issue I have with Neil Patrick Harris’s character is due to his presentation on screen. They lower the frame rate whenever he is on screen and it looks awful. They lower the frame rate a lot in this movie and it never looks good. This film really didn’t need to have been made but at least it has some sort of message which is more than I can say for Revolutions. I probably would recommend passing on this movie and just watching the original again. Expand

TheAfter re-watching the first three Matrix movies, I can't say that this one was necessary. I mean, in the movie they even joke about the studio forcing them to make another movie, which unfortunately doesn't make the situation any better. The action is fine, there's a good amount of it, the music is really good for the fight scenes. White rabbit works well for the movie. There are some cool ideas like the machines working with the humans, but unfortunately, go unexplored for a weaker plot point. Morpheus and Agent Smith are both there, but not, but are played by different actors. They made a very weird and unconvincing reason for them being like that, and they go the whole movie not doing anything of significance. You could easily write them out of the movie and it'd have the same impact. Honestly, as most people expected this is inherently just another cash grab sequel that studios are pumping out all the time today, and frankly, while it had the potential to be decent it just didn't use the plot lines that could expand on the story at all. The same message and theme are explained again, but this time they even use clips from older movies to show it, to where it seems like they had no idea what to do with it and you could tell. Neo and Trinity never seemed like a powerful enough couple to be the whole drive for the matrix to even exist beyond the third movie, both narratively and literally. Carrie-Anne Moss seems bored in this movie, and I can understand why. It's also weird how they felt the need to make Trinity just as powerful as Neo. At least they didn't nerf Neo just to prop her up. But not everyone has to have the same strength to be equally as important to the story. Instead of cool fight scenes from Neo, you just get him force pushing people over and over. It's I don't know if they waited 10 years too long to make another movie. Overall Matrix Regurgitations just feels like a cash grab rehash like the Force Awakens, but now it makes fun of itself and uses old clips which just makes it feel lazier. It wasn't bad and at least it was better than the third movie, but it tells no new story and just doesn't justify its own existence. Expand

So, I belong to those people who liked the first act, in the first instance I considered it quite risky but manages to unfold in an intriguing way and in a certain way, taking existential concepts again.
The second act was the worst of the film, I have very rarely been so bored watching a film and unfortunately happens here. Almost all the middle was pure explanation, the action scenes in this part were quiet heartless.
The third act gets to take power with great chase scene, the most exciting scene of the film. The conclusion is fine, but in this point you almost forget how they get there. In the end, this film manages to be a great show at times, but regrettably is forgettable.
Last but not least, the cast were very fine and about the visual effects I would say like a character in the film says "It's so perfect that it doesn't seem real".

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I actually made an account just so that i can vote and review

TL;DR: this movie shows a style similar to how disney destroyed the star wars franchise -> corporate greed; wokeness and leeching on people's melancholies/old interests.
Objectively it has bad script, bad storytelling, and irrational-crazy plot holes. An abomination!
PROS: Actors are good; soundtrack is good; special effects are good; adds some new and fresh ideas.
CONS: Everything else immaginable (story/plot/lore; script/lines; universe; action scenes; etc) EVERYTHING ELSE is a cesspool! Now for the long version:

For a start, apparently i have to show my colors because the toleant individuals that gave this a 9 or 10 rating are yapping that all the people giving it bad reviews are either haters; bigots; trolls; or didn't understand the movie. (yes, i have read a lot of comments, both pros and cons)

- it's not my 1st Matrix movie (i rewatched the trilogy quite a few times)!
- i am a feminist: from the old movies i appreciated Switch, i LOVED Trinity and from this new movie i appreciate Buggs.
- i am not blind by conservatorism: i appreciate and understand that in 60 years tech can advance and the humans can now easily teleport using different kinds of doorways and can log-out without the need of payphones (tottaly understandable and easy to digest lore change - this is also a movie pro btw!).
- i am objective (these are the pro's of this movie too): truly, it's a very original and fresh approach to the matrix franchise to:
1) bring more sentient robot-machines on the side of humanity (and it's nicely shown)
2) show how humanity is thriving
3) create an alternate way of ressurrecting Neo and the other characters.
4) changing their faces/identities was an awesome idea (speaking of which: we were always prepared by the old trilogy that a character can have a different face: the oracle always had a different image in each movie!).

Now for the snap back to reality:

NO MATTER HOW YOU LOOK AT IT, A MOVIE IS BAD IF:
I) action scenes are spoiled with the camera super zoomed-in and shaking (example: compare Neo fighting exiles from old -vs- new)

II) you are forcing a story into fast-forward mode + no explanations (not even later) + plot holes that are so irrational its insane (eg what happened to the second helicopter @ rooftop ending scene? did it just went for coffee and came back later?)

III) a character has plot armor (i wanted to puke when i saw Buggs not taking a sigle bullet at the begining, when she gets flushed by the agent on that rooftop, and when both agents AND the swat team with automatic guns mag-dump on her from 3 meters away)

iv) you change its soul: WHEN in THREE movies did the old trilogy had a family friendly fist bump moment??? (Seq + stick insect robot fist bump to celebrate a victory) NEVER! Matrix was NEVER similar to guardians of the galaxy; or avengers or star wars (the new trilogy). It NEVER had those useless moments, never needed them. But now it's exactly like them: just a puffy team, made by puffy teammates, doing puffy things. v) last but not least, lore speaking: Trinity and Neo are a thing (which is actually and ironically even reinforced by this movie also) - so, then, WHY dismiss that at one of the peak moments of the couple???
Like seriously, the couple barely survived a huge explosion @ rooftop ending scene, and Trinity instead of going to Neo to check on him, she walked away, not even caring if he's alive or dead, so that she can bask in the beauty of the sunrise.... REALLY??????

People giving this movie anything above 7 just means you are either blinded by love+melancholy+copium; ignorant; or just trying to balance out the zeroes and 1s (action which, btw, just makes just as neanderthalic as the troglodytes who gave it 0,1,2).

CONCLUSION:
BAD MOVIE. An insult to the spirit and lore of the movie/universe.
Congratulations, you washed another franchise and made it more consumer friendly.

A little cornier and campy compared to prior Matrix movies, doesn't take itself too seriously. The movie is primarily about the continuation of Neo and Trinity's love story. Nothing much new here, but still enjoyable to Matrix fans like myself.

The middle part is the worst: fast edited action and the feminist elements are annoying (women everywhere, especially in the top positions) and the political correctness also. The ending is ok.
Technically the movie is on great level, but they are not revolutionary (remember the first Matrix...). The story is good, with some clever connections the the first 3 matrix movies. The not so serious dialogues in the beginning about the sequel were a bit out out of the place in the serious world. And it would be better to show a completely different part of the matrix story with different characters and not the old Keanu Reeves and even older looking Carrie-Ann Moss. I didnt enjoy their love story in this movie either: If they love each other so much, they should be together since a long time. In addition Jessica Hanwicks as Bugs and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II are without charisma (remember the charisma of Laurence Fishborne?) and Janda Pinkett Smith as Niobe is also annoying.

Look, it’s one thing to be meta, but making a good movie is also another thing. Out of all the Matrix films, this had the weakest action scenes. The creativity and originality were seriously lacking here.

First half of the movie felt like it might have something interesting about it storywise (even though it did feel like many scenes were so called fan service and only there for fans to remember how cool Matrix was when it came out etc), butFirst half of the movie felt like it might have something interesting about it storywise (even though it did feel like many scenes were so called fan service and only there for fans to remember how cool Matrix was when it came out etc), but second part felt a bit dumb and even more with many scenes just repeating past movies and no real substance to the movie. I know that many expected action type thriller and thats why put even lower ratings, but I did not really expect that and to me this felt similar to last Matrix of original trilogy in many ways (I dont rate it highly). Anyway, it was watchable, but nothing impressive or on level of first Matrix at all. Expand

There were some interesting story choices that would have give a fresh outlook and direction to the franchise.

But for whatever reason, the movie itself spends more time making fun of itself rather than building on these interesting story beats, I am still confused whether the parody elements were intentional or unintentional.

The Good

There were some very interesting concepts in writing, an AI war, sections of AI choosing a side, Neo not being the only one. All of these would have made better setups for a new trilogy.

Even though the story had interesting beats there were only a couple of standout performances, Reeves and Moss's chemistry was good akin to old lovers, NPH, Yahya, and Hemwick really felt like they were there and having fun and putting an effort if only the dialogue writing kept up.

THE BAD

The worst and the biggest mistake a Matrix movie can make is to have bad action, unfortunately, this sticks out like a sore thumb. It did not feel like this was going to be a low budget, so the ultra-low-budget editing, the pathetic wire work really damages the film.

The film feels like it simultaneously hates its previous legacy and wants to do everything that the previous trilogy did, it was so jarring. If you add to it the absolutely terrible dialogue writing it would even kill parts of the film where there were interesting story beats going on.

NPH was putting on a good performance as the new architect, but sadly the dialogue given to his character was so bad that he kept coming off as petty and bitc#y rather than a sentient AI.

For all the bad dialogue and confusing story of the first trilogy, the action on screen is some of the best put to screen accompanies with some of the most imaginative usages of CGI, even if it is dated today what they are trying to do is really cool.

Twenty-three years later, some of the themes and structure are recycled. The protagonists still must choose between the red pill (truth, reality) and the blue pill (blissful ignorance), a concept now fully embedded in pop culture. Another, less positive, carryover is a storyline that’s even more confusing than the original. Co-writer/Director Lana Wachowski (sister Lilly sat this one out) has delivered a new work that revisits many of the philosophical concepts launched in the original. But this installment feels overcrowded with ideas.

The acting is worth the price of admission. Neil Patrick Harris (TV’s “How I Met Your Mother,” Broadway roles including “Cabaret,” “Hedwig and the Angry Inch”) as The Analyst skillfully depicts what can lurk beneath an empathic, charming exterior. But it’s getting reacquainted with Neo/Thomas Anderson (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity/Tiffany (Carrie-Anne Moss) that offers real satisfaction. Seeing Reeves and Moss reinhabiting these iconic roles is like visiting old friends. Anderson is now the programmer for a video game called, wait for it, The Matrix. But he has a boss (an excellent Jonathan Groff – TV’s “Mindhunter,” vocals in “Frozen,” “Hamilton”), so he’s back to a mundane existence where others hold the power. Tiffany is a mom whose molars grind when her husband calls her “Tiff.” Based on this screenplay, explaining whether and how they escape The Matrix to recognize their full selves could take years and cost millions of lives. Suffice it to say the plot is a bit challenging.

Two factors drag this effort down from the original’s lofty pedestal. First, the CGI and special effects, particularly the fight sequences, so novel and stunning in 1999, now seem pretty mundane. While the original film offered groundbreaking CGI, the special effects in “Resurrections” don’t distinguish themselves from the average superhero movie out today. Second, the script relies too much and too often on exposition to move the plot along and to underline the choices of the main characters. When the exposition isn’t being condescendingly redundant, it’s just preachy and boring.

Despite the jumbled script, the core theme of “Resurrections” is quite straightforward. If you pare down the story to its essence, it’s a simple message: love conquers all.
