Overall, Resurrections is a bit messy and ultimately can't live up to its own ideas. The first half of the film is way more interesting than what follows, which becomes a much more generic plot. What saves the film is Reeves and Moss - they have such magnetic chemistry after all this time and really help sell some of the wackier moments that don't land. Expand

To be honest I saw this headed downhill after I saw Hugo Weaving and Laurence would not be returning for this film. It wasn't just the story and characters that were terrible it was the performances as well it was like nobody wanted to be in the film. Even the fight scenes were terrible and that's saying something for a Matrix movie usually you have amazing action or fight scenes. Did they lose all of their stunt coordinators to John Wick or something? I just don't understand the point of this film at all and I am so confused at what I just watched and the ending was so terrible. Why do I have this weird feeling John Wick 4 is going to blow this movie out of the water when it releases? Expand

The filmmakers spat at me, and I have to smile in response! It seems that the plot and texts were invented by teenagers, each one phrase at a time. And then they smeared it all with a thick layer of topical agenda.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Affront to the legacy. Just about every aspect of film making is either mediocre (music, sfx, choreography, casting) or just embarrasingly terrible (model design, camerawork, plot). There are machines with big Disney eyes and cute tiny robots giving high-fives, for God's sake... The scene where Trinity learns to fly is so cheap that it's meme-worthy. Fighting scenes are cut to 30-milisecond shreds like in a cheap action movie from the 90's, you can't make out the choreography most of the time. Plot is cheap and uninspired, and it simply does not make any sense in the long run. Back when the original trilogy came out, it probably wouldn't make it to a fan-fic collection.

Real sorry for Keanu. He already took part in the biggest disappointment in video games. Now, they put him in one of the biggest disappointments in cinema.

The only redeeming quality is that the makers seem to confess and apologize by inserting this allegory of a burnt-out game designer forced by corporate interests to make a sequel he never wanted.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Matrix....delivered as a student movie.

The beginning was thrilling, the initial thrill of here we are, again, back in The Matrix, we are experiencing a loop the Matrix rebuilding itself and the cycle repeating...the suddenly...wtf is that haircut on the kid? They are fans?? Ewwww.
O.K. the situation is changing. Hmmmm.

The premise surprised me, but it did grow on me in the first act as we see Keanu as a game designer, and the struggle between his 'real' memories and the fiction of the world he 'created'. The flashbacks were working, I felt intrigued. This is the strongest element of the new film. The concept and rescue of Trinity is a solid idea. It pains me to say they couldn't follow through.

The Annalist was a good choice...but only for a bit part; The 'new' Smith is a disaster. I felt he was completely non threatening and totally unconvincing. The lack of a genuinely threatening 'bad guy' completely pulled me out of the film every time the characters of Smith and the Annalist were on screen. Horrible casting (sorry/not sorry guys), and badly written.

The horrible section with the Merovingian was truly, utterly, devastatingly bad. The action scenes were poorly executed (although Keanu moves well) the feeling was this was produced by Uni students using The Matrix style as inspiration and having got the cast stoned enough decided to shoot a scene.

The return of Trinity was exhilarating, but her rescue...which should have been the sole focus of the film was so badly done. Show, don't tell! We had to endure horrid exposition cut up with scenes of what was being described, in what should have been the focal point of the whole film; an exhilarating, risky attempt to rescue Trinity in the 'real' world.

The experience, as a huge fan of the originals, gets a barely pass mark. Neo and Trinity re-united for a Happy Ending could have worked. But it feels like the film was miscast, lacked any real threat, and didn't go deep enough. It looks like it was shot for TV, and the whole zombie hoard 'swarm' vibe was still born.

The story itself was good. I can see why they wanted to tell it. It could have worked with better attention to the writing; ultimately this is NOT the matrix we were looking for...it's a pale facsimile, a low resolution copy in an era of High definition I-Max blockbusters.

I give it a 6 purely for seeing Neo and trinity on screen.

I think there are some interesting ideas here, and the best moments are when the movie is slightly tongue-in-cheek self-referential to the originals. While there are some interesting ideas in the story-line, ultimately the movie is marred by clumsy editing. Late in the movie there is a sudden swing to ridiculously maudlin melodrama underscored by operatic theme music - ugh, could not go along for that ride. Expand

The only Defect is that, the movie don't explain the new characters, like Lexy, who is she. I think Lana should explain just a little about the new characters. The agente smith was just a Random character that appeared only to save neo at the end of the movie, Like Smith, the same happens with Morpheus, it only appears to free Neo. I also think that bugs was an underused character, it had incredible potential, but it was not explored. Expand

I was promised a terrible woke sequel, but the bad guys are still the Communists (machines) and taking the red pill still wakes you up.

The story is cringe at times, but it's still a somewhat enjoyable action film. Set sixty years after the events of The Matrix Revolutions, the film follows our hero Neo, who is now living a somewhat normal life as Thomas Anderson in San Francisco as a Game Developer, and creator of The Matrix video games, (insert major cringe at this point with terrible 4th wall breaking dialog). Anderson is seeing a therapist and describes a psychosis of him believing The Matrix is real, after a while a new version of Morpheus offers him the red pill and reopens his mind to the world of the Matrix.

Neo joins a group of rebels and we have pretty much the same old story being told again.

Not only is there a new Morpheus, there is also a new Agent Smith, the problem here is that they have just recast old characters, and the original actors were so iconic in their roles, that this instantly seems alike a huge let down.

The Good

It is still the tale of good vs evil, the common man versus the elite, the special effects are incredible as you would expect.

The Bad

The film is not great, it is also not terrible

Overall

The promises of "reclaiming the red pill" narrative doesn't really materialise, the film is not overly woke, the problem is the film is just not that good. But that is because of the very high standard of the original.

I score the film a super generous 7/10 mainly as I am a huge Matrix fan. Could've and should've been better. We are literally living in a world right now that the original film fantasized about, but the film makers were too cowardly to take head on.

___________________________________________________________________________________

I do not know what it is - but it is not a matrix - at least they failed to make a sequel.
And what kind of idiotic costume is Morpheus wearing ? Where is brutality and wisdom ? What we saw was a bunch of special effects, but without meaning!
I'm disappointed.
I forced myself to watch IT-but not the matrix or the continuation of the matrix. Still, the Wachowski Brothers knew better than the Wachowski women.
The 21st century is the apogee of the decline of culture and values, and this is expressed in films, games, music and much more. Creativity has turned into brown slush for many.

So, I belong to those people who liked the first act, in the first instance I considered it quite risky but manages to unfold in an intriguing way and in a certain way, taking existential concepts again.
The second act was the worst of the film, I have very rarely been so bored watching a film and unfortunately happens here. Almost all the middle was pure explanation, the action scenes in this part were quiet heartless.
The third act gets to take power with great chase scene, the most exciting scene of the film. The conclusion is fine, but in this point you almost forget how they get there. In the end, this film manages to be a great show at times, but regrettably is forgettable.
Last but not least, the cast were very fine and about the visual effects I would say like a character in the film says "It's so perfect that it doesn't seem real".

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The bad reviews here are from people stuck in their own Matrix in their own head. It’s actually genius how this film used the opportunity of yet-another-fricking-Hollywood-sequel to comment on WHY those things are happening, why these things make the money, why our modern culture builds these echo chambers that trap us in our own comforting illusions. Sadly, despite the film trying it’s best to do all this within a clever re-imagining of an upgraded Matrix world, it seems many people are just not able to get it at all. Instead they get straight back to being outraged in their own little matrix of socials like Metacritic. Well done, Wachowski and crew! You had a seemingly impossible mission and you did a great job. You even explicitly spelled out what you were doing in the film and still folks are missing it. Which just proves your point. Expand

Not a safe, but still unnecessary sequel to the Matrix trilogy. It's a shame that nothing in this film works as well as it should. Not the action, not the plot, not the references, not the characters.

Your first indication this is going to be a bad is when they spend the first thirty or so minute **** all over the matrix and having to do a sequel. Just a retread and rehash save your money and rent it or watch it on hbo max.

In the first leg of the film, ResurrectionsThis movie was always going to be in a difficult position; given how the story was entirely completed with Revolutions; and in the beginning it feels like the film was built around that difficulty. In the first leg of the film, Resurrections seems like it's trying to be a self aware satire of the industry and tribute to the original film; yet this dynamic fades away quickly, and eventually changes to just a boring, poorly paced retread of the franchise's tropes without any of the charm. Once the second act starts, this movie just runs out of energy. Story beats from the original film are dug up and re-used in just the right way to feel genuinely pointless without even invoking nostalgia. The way characters are re-introduced, (especially the ones played by different actors)feels inorganic, and ultimately just comes across as futile. These returning characters feel like bad imitations of themselves, and the actual backstory linking the events of the previous films seems forced; the fact that this was never planned when the original series was made is painfully clear. Even if you can look past the disappointing plot the action scenes this series is known so well for really don't do much to come across as special in this one. While there are some memorable moments, the spectacle in this movie is at best almost on par with the original series, and at its worst incomprehensible. TL;DR This movie is competently made, and in the beginning genuinely interesting, but it quickly devolves into uninspired rehashes of what's come before, which fail to ever achieve the same level of significance or even spectacle as the original films. This really is a terrible and horrendous, hugely unnecessary movie. If anything, the only thing the movie succeeds to do, is spoil the original trilogy even more than it did on its own. Poor writing, laughable screenplay, and shockingly bad acting from what would be considered a A-list cast. It feels like this was made as some kind of medium for promoting "diversity and inclusiveness", as it has been seen with so many film as of late - something that always seem to fail, as it forces the narrative and art of the movies/shows, instead of letting it shine trough naturally.... My one advise would be this: If you are a fan, dont watch this, it will only ruin it for you. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really like the idea of The Matrix. I enjoyed all 3 even if I can acknowledge that their story choices weren't always the most statisfying to me. I could see the manga and anime influences in their choices and so I gave them a huge pass on all the Judeo-Christian messianic tropes that was the resolution of the trilogy. It didn't tie up all the loose ends... but it did "balance the equation". The animatrix (which was released between 2 and 3) was far more imaginative and did a lot for the world building. Having just recently rewatched all the 3 again in preparation for part 4, I think Reloaded (part 2) is my favourite. It all mostly holds up 20 years later, and while the first fares the worst because we've just seen it (and it has been riffed on) so many times... it's impact is just a little less than what it was. And #3 actually fares better this many years later, as all the questions that were bouncing around my head after #2 have all but evaporated in time... #3 is a tense fun ride. What all 3 of them have in common - regardless of plot - is tight editing, fantastic lighting and meaningful camera work.

So, the last thing I expected for part 4... is for any of those stables to be lacking. I thought that perhaps I may not like the plot or the handling of the resurrections... or all the old cast... or all the new cast... but I didn't imagine that I would be let down by shoddy editing, bad camerawork (especially during the fight scenes) and really awful lighting. The story itself is "meh" - it's a "save the princess" trope, which considering its pro feminist roots feels slightly odd. It doesn't really add to the world building more than a couple of novel ideas... but they're not really explored... just drive by "what ifs". It's incredibly self referential... it's written into the story that it is aware of the first 3 movies, aware of Warner Brothers (the production company) and actively talks about these things at you. It's meant to be played for laughs... but it was a little too much on the side of cringe. It of course also tries to pay homage to itself, by recreating old iconic shots... and all this does is throw a spotlight on the zero iconic shots this movie brings to the table (as well as show us that 20 years later, it's seemingly impossible to improve on those shots). The CGI and the art direction of the machines is top notch. They've defanged the sentinels with a weird drone-like sound effect which them less frightening, but they're hardly featured so fine. The art direction of the live set pieces isn't that great. Busy backgrounds, flat lighting, cut-cut-cut, over blurred images... means you cannot see the story of a fight scene. I wonder if Lana needs Lilly to make a good movie... cos by herself, this move feels exceptionally amateur in places. The big action set pieces are badly photographed, so you don't know the location... and the action on screen is so frenetic you cannot tell who's winning anywhere. They've also eschewed some of the staples of the franchise which made it iconic. You no longer need a hard line to get in and out of the matrix - thereby effectively killing any tension in this act. It seemingly can happen whenever the plot requires it. Thematically, it's the same theme as the trilogy (love conquers all)... which is fine. It's part of the DNA of the show, like the planet killing Death Stars are the DNA of every star wars story. It's fine... just a little on the nose. Fight scenes are a visual cutty mess. It's one of the few sci-fi franchises to feature an incredibly diverse cast, and that remains true which is great. Although one spends so little time with the new cast... they're all just very shallow coded stand ins (20yr old half asian woman with blue hair who is the captain of her ship and the youngest of her crew, who disobeys direct orders because she always knows best, never gets court martial although is threatened with it constantly, plays by the rule of cool, and just kinda stumbles harmlessly through the plot when she is required to with a loyal crew who will follow her to death... because?) is just presented as fact that we must accept. Keanu and Carrie are fine... not great. There's not much for them to do in the script. It's supposed to be about their love for one another, and while they do have chemistry... they're both in the 50s... and that romeo and juliet stuff just rings a little false. The movie's plot doesn't help here... with weird contrivance heaped upon one another until it just leaves no air for it to work. And then suddenly through the power of script writing, it does work. Neo spends most of the movie casting the "shield" spell, and there is a reversal of "Who Can Fly Now"... which isn't explained and feels little pandery. It is a badly made, badly told uninteresting tale. I don't think fans of the original will love this... and I don't know if newcomers (anyone under 25) is going to care.

Matrix resurrections had to walk a fine line to deliver something special. It had to create something distilled and essential, while large in scope. While Matrix 2 & 3 couldn't accomplish this, Matrix 4 does it effortlessly .

Matrix 4 manages to inject a fresh eyed view of the universe and put the focus back on the relationship between Neo and Trinity. I think the only issues with the movie is the beginning. The lighting on Keanu and Carrie-Anne when they meet lacks dimension, almost like a soap opera on tv. Given the opportunity the director has here to show the meetup of an iconic pairing, I think this subconsciously feels disappointing, but it’s only a few scenes in the beginning. Also, movie clips from the first movies are shown, multiple times. This does not feel great, it’s very self aware and almost feels cheap a few times. But none of those are major roadblocks.

Matrix 4 succeeds in sucking you back in, making you actually care about the universe it created. 2 and 3 felt drawn out, but 4 is unique, exciting, fresh, and bold. It crafts a script that explains the details of the first 3, answering what happened in our time away and what that means. And it does it while making a great movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The heart of the story was pretty good, if they didn't ruin the movie with 30 minutes of cringy meta bs it could have been serviceable. Morpheus and Smith characters are totally underwhelming, Neo's dynamic with the machines and gaslighting was actually pretty good. It really feels like Lana tried to scuttle the franchise because she didn't want anyone to make more of them. For me, kind of a superfan, I'll not be seeing any sequels to this, and for me there are only Three Matrix movies. Neo doesn't hold a gun, and he has a fancy force field now, kind of undermining the feel of his powers being the result of him hacking the world. Bugs could have been Morpheus and they could have left Morpheus dead. Smith didn't have to exist. The meta bs could have been cut and you would have a far better movie. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The matrix back 1999, was way ahead of its time, bringing lots of new ideas for technical point of view and storytelling point of view. The matrix reloaded and revolutions are also excellent movies. During my rewatch before going to resurrections, this was opinion about the trillogy. The matrix ressurrections however is a type of parody of first 3 movies, which I am really suprised. Why would someone wants to do this? What was the purpose behind it? The matrix 1-2-3 was so cool back in the day. This one lost its magical touch, this is the main problem with the movie. In order to be objective, I’ll share my pros and cons so let the readers decide:

Pros: swarm, progs can be in physical form (morpheus), neo and trinity, resurrection scenes (remaking the bodies of neo and trinity), meroviengian, but thats pretty much it :(

Cons: The analyst, Smith (Is he also ressurrected?), new characters, old niobe, new morpheus, fight scenes, action scenes, music, visual effects, new zion, the matrix as a game, neros fat friend in the office, trinity’s family, red pill blue pill, so many old scenes from trilogy…and many more.

Conclusion: this also happened to star wars. Exactly 1:1. Now how and who will save the matrix…

I'm honestly shocked that this made it out of the editing room with no one stopping its release, im not sure if it really was just Lana pouring gasoline onto the franchise and lighting it on fire because she didnt want the studio taking her creation and **** it up themselve. it really didn't have as much woke garbage as I expected,(other than trinity riding around with neo on her back on a motorcycle which made me laugh out loud and her awakening first) it was just hollow, the new architect was the analyst, maybe it's taking a shot at modern psychiatry being used as a tool for control that is more effective than using violence but it was so poorly executed it felt like a comedy at many parts,. just wow Expand

The visuals are absolutely top-notch. Don't let people tell you they are not, while they keep watching the umpteenth mediocre marvel movie. The action is great too. And, most importantly, this movie is about emotion and connection, and as a day-one matrix fan, this movie certainly clicked for me in that regard. Sure, there are some silly things I would change, but I'm not going to assume everyone make their movies how I personally want them.
This leads to one of the key problems with many sequels these days. You have hardcore fans, and time. Everyone has their own theory of how this should have been continued, if at all. Personally, I was in luck, as the movie did almost exactly what I had imagined it would need to do and so the story made sense for me. This is a solid 8 from me.

and I thought it worked so well and smartly. It was like “ooooh…now I see it.” The costumers and cinematographers did such a perfect job of making Neo and Trinity look so similar throughout. Made so much more sense. When I was 20-ish and watching the first one, this wouldn’t have been the movie I wanted. But one of the few times 20-some years later that the franchise and I both matured at the same rate. Bugs was amazing. Really liked her.

Often times, the film feels like a vehicle for Lana, the director, to vent about her frustration with the film industry and Matrix fan base. The Matrix narrative is advanced very little after Matrix Revolutions, but what little is new, is often bizarrely meta or predictable. The action sequences are often heavily inspired if not near recreations of earlier films in the series. My expectations were very low after my disappointment in Revolution, but this film still disappointed me. Easily the worst film in the entire franchise. Avoid altogether. Expand

The first half was most of the character kissing Neo's ass and CONSTANTLY talking about how cool and revolutionary the Matrix trilogy was. It had the cringiest dialogue I've heard since....Matrix revolutions. Every time they called back to the trilogy, the movie became worse. Yet, when they added new elements to the story, it had some promise. And I gotta say, Neil Patrick Harris did really well as the new villain. I just wish they would've had more confidence in the new characters. Expand

However, there are definitely some things that bugged me. Some of the new characters felted bland and lacked much of the chemistry I spoke of earlier. The "new and improved" Agent Smith was a no go for me, and I disliked the attempts at humor. All in all, a good movie but don't expect something as good as the original or Reloaded. Expand

I had very little expectation given how poor the 2nd and 3rd Matrix movies turned out, but this 4th one was so bad it in fact made the 2nd and 3rd seem like masterpieces in comparison. At some point it is implied that this movie was made only because the studio was going to make a Matrix movie with or without the Wachowskis' involvement; and the resentment shows. It is a movie so bad that it seems like the director was trying to make as awful of a matrix movie as they possibly could. The self-referential metafictional elements are so cringeworthy and lame that the movie comes off like a bad fan film. At its best, there are brief hints of ideas that could have been used in a better way. As a whole, the movie feels cheaper and more dated than first movie which came out over 20 years ago. It seems like the Wachowski who worked on this forgot the first thing about why people liked their movies in the first place. There is no element of this that is at all redeemable or enjoyable. The directing, acting, casting, score, cinematography, editing, etc. etc. are all so disgustingly bad as to be amazing that anyone who even saw the first Matrix was remotely involved with this one. The fight scenes aren't even good, confusingly edited and appearing cheap and fake. The casting of the villains is borderline criminal. Even the set design is uninspired and dated. The film appears to be set in the cringiest part of the early 2010's, even the outfits the characters appear in being unimaginative and unstylish. There is nothing in this movie worth even thinking about. Avoid at all costs. Expand

So good. Loved it. I don't have anything to say; I'm an internet rando. Cinematography was great. Stunts were great. The story was interesting.

The acting, the lighting, the choreography, the script, the overall story all failed.
I went and watched the original after watching this and literally on 4K the 22 year old movie looks better. This was…a waste. Id rather it had never been made. I give it a 3 instead of a 0 simply because I love the Matrix, but there isn’t much to love here.

It's so bad you're left wondering if it's tongue in cheek insult to WB or if the crew is so woke they've become blind to what a terrible movie they've made.

Blue haired female character replacing white male lead…. This was easy to call by watching any of the trailers. Gaming and film industry is ruined and will never come back until you stand up for yourself. This is the movie that YOU DESERVE. As long as America exists and keeps going in the direction it is, this will be the standard. Women good, men bad. White bad, blue haired minority is God. Get used to it or DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. Story: Too woke. Lacks fiction and sense. 1/10
Plot: Too too far fetched and pointless. 1/10
Special effects: Worst than the original Matrix. 0/10
Acting: Too tired, soul less, uninterested.
Overall rating: Pathetic attempt to cash one last paycheck by mooching of the success of the original trilogy while spreading the woke ness.

Every actor performed well in this movie even the extras. It was like seeing good old friends as soon as Keanu and Carrie-Anne were on screen. A good balance of suspense, humor, sarcasm and bunch of new concepts and ideas, which can be used for further continuation of the franchise. The CGI and special effects were well done, they look upgraded but also felt familiair with previous movies. The dialogues were well written and flowed surprisingly well. All in all it was a good fun ride and a welcome treat! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well... I wanna like it, but its not great, even bad in direct comparison to the originals. The biggest problem i have with this movie is that they are trying to reboot the matrix with a mix of fresh character and old ones from the original trilogy while heavily relying on the nostalgia factor to make the whole experience more palatable instead of actually trying to introduce something completely new. The story isn't really intuitive nor does it invoke the same feelings or atmosphere as the originals despite them trying really hard to do so and maybe that's one of the problems here that they are trying way way too hard.

The plot itself is rather flat and almost comical with the ultimate motives the main villain has, which is a shame considering one of the main aspect of the originals was that it animated the viewer to think and question. I did however like the overall look of the movie, it doesn't have the typical green hue the originals had but that didn't bother me too much, the fight scenes were not that good but i liked the music. The chosen outfits of the characters left something to be desired and the dialogs especially in the first act of the movie range from alright to pure cringe. Overall i'd say its a less then average experience, if you liked the originals you are better off just rewatching those and yes that includes 2 and 3 because they are still better then this. Its not amazing by any stretch and i already approached it with the expectation that it was certainly not gonna be anywhere near as good as Matrix 1 and even then the few expectations i did have were let down. And who in the world decided that Neo should never even touch a gun throughout the whole movie? Matrix literally created the iconic "Guns, lots of guns." quote. Just watch the originals, this is certainly not the worst movie in existence but the originals are just so much better.

How is it possible it looked so beautiful in 1999 and now it looks like a cheap amateur movie? Same thing with LOTR and The Hobbit, the cinematic feeling of real film was replaced with the sterile awkward framerate of digital 8k soap opera shaky cam nonsense.

The original Matrix had such careful attention to detail, everything had the film grainy green look and cinematic feel. This new one felt like watching a clueless high school student was given 100 million to create a soap opera. I can't even get into the story, the legendary cinematography of the original was replaced with the worst visuals in any high budget movie I've ever seen. It just doesn't make sense why anyone would do this? I could have hired a 12 year old to film a better Matrix movie, it's mindboggling just how absolutely terrible it looks.

Truly dreadful, this movie is stuck in the past. The action scenes are confusing and dissapointing. What little story there is simply repeats the past, gives jew characters no time to shine and ends just when something should have happened
