At last, The Batman movie was about something and not Batman itself. A story around Patisson's superhero is dark and gloomy, and the true hero, Gotham City shines the most.

And this Gotham could easily be the nameless city where Se7en took place, including the incessant precipitation. The talent that Matt Reeves assembled for this one is beautifully apparent, from the set design to the cinematography (so many shots deserved to be paused and marveled at), casting to scripting (the script’s frequent use of silence to convey meaning is masterful), and his direction is spot on. Easily one of the best Batmans out there, but the suffocating dreariness of it leaves me wondering how often I’ll want to watch it again. Just like 2019’s Joker, The Batman is a standalone movie featuring Robert Pattinson as the the character and not part of DC Extended Universe. This is the first solo Batman movie after 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises which is part of The Dark Knight Trilogy. Currently, this movie is the first instalment of the planned Batman trilogy by Matt Reeves, who is known for directing 2014’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes.

In his second year as a masked vigilante, Batman (Pattinson), he investigates the murder of Gotham City Mayor Don Mitchell Jr. on Halloween. The mayor was murdered by a mysterious serial killer called Riddler (Dano), who targets corrupt and powerful Gotham City figures. Apparently, he left a riddle behind for Batman. Soon after, Riddler kills Commissioner Pete Savage and left another riddle for him.

After solving the first two riddles, Batman and Lieutenant James Gordon finds a thumb drive in the late Mayor’s car. The thumb drive contains pictures of the mayor with a Russian woman at Iceberg Lounge which is operated by Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin, Don Carmine Falcone’s lieutenant. While Penguin deny knowing the Russian woman, Batman come across Selina Kyle (Kravitz), who is a roommate with that woman.

With Selina’s help, Batman learns that Gotham District Attorney Gil Colson along with the late police commissioner, are under the payroll of Don Falcone. Riddler strikes again when he abduct Colson later that night and use him to crash the mayor’s funeral the next day. He left another riddle for Batman while Colson was strapped with a timed collar bomb. Batman has to solve the mystery of the serial murders in Gotham City before Riddler kills more innocent people along the way.

If you are expecting to watch Batman’s parents died on the big screen again, you will be glad to hear that this does not happened at all. This one part will let you know that this movie is not gonna be another retelling of an origin story. This movie puts more focus on Batman’s detective skills than the previous movies where this skill was not put much to use. Using the Riddler as the main villain really does align in the movie for Batman to use his detective skills. As the movie used the mystery-solving angle, the movie will keep you engage with the story and you will not feel bored while watching. Speaking of bored, there is not a single scene in this movie is boring because the story of this movie is really well written and the pacing is very good which nothing is out of place. With a well written story and good pacing, you will feel that movie is like a two and half hour movie instead of near three hour movie. Kudos to Matt Reeves for a very well done job in directing this movie. His direction of this movie can rival towards Christopher Nolan’s direction of his Batman movies.

Robert Pattinson’s performance is really great. Not only his Batman is intimidating like his predecessors, his version of Batman spend more screen time as the Caped Crusader than his actual identity as Bruce Wayne. His character developement is done well from his journey as from a vigilante to being a symbol of hope which I believe will carry on into the next instalments. I’m sure his predecessors is proud of him. Paul Dano not only does a great job in playing The Riddler but portraying the character as a Zodiac Killer-style serial killer is really an interesting choice and one great way to introduce this villain into a modern day comic books cinematic. Zoë Kravitz along with the other casts have really done an outstanding performance in the movie. I also liked her on-screen chemistry with Pattinson which I felt it so natural. I felt that this movie does a better Batman-Catwoman relationship than the previous movies.

There are not many bad things about this movie. The only bad thing about this movie is Andy Serkis, who played the role of Alfred Pennyworth, have very little scenes compared to his predecessors. Because of less scenes in the movie, Batman and Alfred’s relationship was not explored well. Hopefully, it does better in the next movies.

As I have mentioned earlier, this is a standalone Batman movie with no connection to DC Extended Universe which means you do not have to watch any previous instalments. While the movie is unconnected, there is no doubt that this movie is a masterpiece and worth rewatching. Last but not least, there is no post-credits scenes.… Expand

Pattinson played the role super. The overall tone and mood of the movie was right on, and the acting was well done. It is the best movie of 2022. It was a little long, but the plot and action scenes kept it alive and interesting. Worth seeing.

He jumped through ONE window which was at the end, this Bruce Wayne was very depressing, Not a playboy philanthropist. I was a bit more accepting of these things after the second viewing. This is probably the best Batman movie since Mask of the Phantasm. The Dark Knight felt like more of a Joker movie than a Batman one, this film manages to focus on the character of Batman himself much deeper than any previous entry. Pattinson spends the majority of the film in the suit and I loved the way he carries himself as Batman. There wasn't enough of him as Bruce for me to get a good sense of him but I think this was very intentional and don't think it's a bad thing. As promised, this movie focused on the detective aspect of the character and it feels closer to something like Seven or Zodiac. I think some people might be turned off by the slow burn mystery compared to something with more action or "comic book" type moments. I thought they did a good job mixing these types of moments in, like with the intro of the Batmobile. This was a very well crafted film, you can tell the people who worked on this really know their stuff and they truly care about the source material.… Expand

Co-written by Reeves and Peter Craig (“The Town,” “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay”), this film begins when Bruce Wayne/Batman (Robert Pattinson) has been a vigilante crime fighter for two years. After the Mayor of Gotham City is brutally murdered, Batman works with Lieutenant Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) to identify the killer and uncover his motivation. Along the way, Batman is required to confront the corruption of Gotham, where city officials are much more interested in self-dealing than improving the metropolis. Eventually, he discovers that the core of the civic corruption may be closer to home than he thought.

The cast is excellent. In addition to Wright and Paul Dano as The Riddler, John Turturro makes a charismatic appearance as crime boss Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard has a brief, explosive role as the corrupt District Attorney and Colin Farrell, unrecognizable beneath prosthetics and a fat suit, is a criminal-in-training as The Penguin. Zoe Kravitz is a sexy Selina Kyle/Catwoman with her own troubling past to explore. (She apparently prepped for this role by voicing the Catwoman role in 2017’s “The Lego Batman Movie.”) I hope that everybody who remains alive will reappear in later episodes of this intended trilogy.

With this first installment, Reeves has taken the Batman franchise in a very different direction from its predecessors. His goal appears to be exploring the depths of film noir (cynical heroes, stark/dark lighting, intricate plotting, and existential issues). This Batman is a brooding loner driven by vengeance, but self-aware enough to journal his thoughts, writing to give voice to his misgivings about life and his role in it, since there is nobody around to talk to. After “The Lighthouse,” this is a relatively upbeat role for Pattinson.

Two things about this Batman don’t work. First, the venal corruption of public officials is so consistent that the viewer eventually assumes that every character’s sole motivation is self-interest. That’s too cynical, even for me. Second, as The Riddler’s followers prepare for the film’s climactic scene, they debate online what type of weaponry to deploy. For me, observing an online chat where disgruntled terrorists debate “what gauge” rifles to deploy was art imitating life much too closely.

This Batman is sober, somber but still very worthwhile. It forcefully confirms the thesis that power always corrupts.… Expand

The quintessential Batman film. Almost everything about this film is perfect in my eyes. Robert Pattinson is now my favorite Batman. Robert Pattinson is now my favorite Batman. He brings a new layer to the character and we see how Batman has essentially pushed Bruce Wayne away. We get to see that obsession with Batman that people only ever talk about. This Batman is an inexperienced Batman. He is only in his 2nd year of fighting crime so he makes mistakes and learns from them. He goes through a very compelling arc that fighting for vengeance isn’t the goal. Fighting to protect others and bring hope to those who have none is the goal. There’s a scene at the end that does this and it’s probably my favorite scene in a Batman movie. Paul Dano’s Riddler is amazing. Dano gives a performance that can rival Ledger’s Joker although Ledger is still better. He’s terrifying in a scary and funny way. Colin Farrell’s Penguin is a highlight as well. He’s completely unrecognizable here and brings plenty of comic relief to his performance. Zoe Kravitz’s Catwoman, Jeffrey Wright’s Jim Gordon, and Andy Serkis’s Alfred are also absolutely phenomenal. The story revolving around Batman learning the truth about his parents and the city of Gotham is a very compelling and engaging story. For an almost 3 hour long movie, I wasn’t ever bored. Sure you could definitely cut a small handful of scenes out but the film is very well paced in that regard. Michael Giacchino’s has one of his finest scores on full display here. It will get stuck in your head almost instantly and really does a great job at showing how characters feel and adding tension to scenes. The action here is phenomenal. The highway chase is incredibly well edited and shot and Batman fighting criminals feels brutal. I prefer the action scenes in The Dark Knight but it’s still great here. The cinematography and directing are all fantastic. The film looks beautiful in almost every shot and you can see Matt Reeves on full display here. Definitely excited to check out more of his work. I’m unsure if The Dark Knight or this film is my favorite Batman movie. I would highly recommend checking this out when you get the chance.… Expand

The Batman 2022 let's talk about this entire movie and before and everything so the batman 2022 at first i was like this could suck and ruin this character when they drop that teaser i was like wait what this looks so **** good where there is no way this could fail main trailer dropped I completely lost it with all the fights they showed and the very ending with batman walking to penguin my god the shots were nuts than repeating watching the trailers until i was able to see this masterpiece of a movie and my god i love this movie Robert Patterson is **** amazing in this movie where he takes over the movie like i said Robert Patterson I don't like because of twilight they're are so cheesy movies where i can't watch them than where he was doing batman i was like oh no but than seeing this movie man wow his voice is better than christian bale which was a big problem with that trilogy but still love the trilogy for sure just that voice is so bad it takes me out the movie every single time but right when i hear the batman voice he already is my fav batman and the outfit is amazing and bruce wayne i love too bruce wayne oh man i was really worried from i mentioned before and the performance my Robert Pattinson is just perfect i have never seen an actor play batman and i feel bad for batman where this movie is where i feel bad for batman and Riddler is like tied to me with The joker in the dark knight ik ik i just said that it's just that voice and what he did to the city is like wow what a villian i didn't expect any of this i expected an horror performance of the riddler by what i have heard but yeah the ridler is sooooo good in this movie where i hope to see him in future movies than david gordon is everything i wanted where he is like the mentor of batman which was nice where the other cops thinks he is not a good guy which is always funny tho alright catwoman um catwoman could be my favorite one idk yet mainly because i never seen batman returns it's a possibly she could be my favorite also that score like what i never really been a big fan of the soundtrack of batman in the other films but this one is an 10/10 it's amazing and perfect too also the batman walk is like better than michael myers walking like it was amazing to hear batman walk and how the noice and everything this movie is just perfect and yes this movie is my fav movie ever and my fav superhero movie and my fav batman and my fav batman movie which is crazy to top but they did so I give The Batman an A+ An 100%… Expand

Solid, but not great new take on Batman. The movie is very committed to its film-noir detective story, taking a lot of inspiration from Seven. It really is, for most parts, a film-noir detective story.

Unfortunately for all the detective work, the actual story, themes and plot don't come together quite as well as needed to make this film truly great. The plot loses the audience towards the end with the finale not really being fully explained. The villain's motivations aren't really explored and that applies to most of the main characters. They really lack a personal arc.

That leave the film feeling a little unsatisfying, even if it is uniquely crafted.… Expand

A simply incredible film. One of it's best elements is how different it is to other on screen adaptations. The burton films were gothic and dark (for the time), the Schumacher films were wacky and over the top, The Nolan films were realisticA simply incredible film. The burton films were gothic and dark (for the time), the Schumacher films were wacky and over the top, The Nolan films were realistic and grounded and Snyder's were edgy and apocalyptic. This film is dark, moody, gritty and mysterious, and rather than a Superhero flick it is more an action/mystery thriller with noir vibes, with Batman being portrayed as an actual detective solving a string of murders. The film has many more brilliant elements to it too, from the Great performances (Especially Pattinson, Dano,Jeffrey Wright, Zoe Kravitz and Colin Farrell), brilliant characters, carefully layered and brilliantly crafted plot from Matt Reeves, absolutely stunning Cinematography from Greig Fraser, the brilliant, brutal action scenes and of course Michael Giacchino's swelling musical score. There is so much to love about this film, such as the smaller aspects, like Bruce's character arc, his relationship with Alfred, Selina and Gordon, and the horror elements, portraying Batman as a monster from the night that strikes fear into the hearts of criminals. The city of Gotham was easily the best in this movie too, the movie really captured the heart and essence of the city and it's people, state and corruption. Gotham is as much of a Character as the others in this movie and I love that. My only issues with the movie were that some characters like Alfred and Penguin didn't get enough screen time and that the ending was a bit anticlimactic. Overall an absolutely magnificent film, one of my favourite comic book films ever, (the similarities to the long Halloween really helped) and a 9/10 for me. Still trying to process it. Not sure if it's better than The Dark Knight yet ( comparisons will obviously be brought up), will have to rewatch it for that, but for now I can say that I love The Batman, and I highly recommend it… Expand

I get the feeling that this movie is a lot of people’s first 3 hour movie. That may be the reason for the outlandish praise.

The Batman has a very unique movie in the Batman Franchise. It's very slow, but it isn't boring. The depth of field is set very high to hide the splatter effects to get the PG-13 rating, but it is ok, because you can see enough to imagine this scene clearly in your head. But the depth of field doesn't just hide the splatter effects, it also hides some hints which you will mention by watching the movie very often. Over all the camere work in this movie is brilliant. The actors played their roles pretty well too and the fight scenes are so well done, they nearly get niveau of the Matrix Movies (except from The Matrix : Resurrections). The story is typicall, but it's pretty interesting.
All in all one can say that this movie isn't really an action movie, it's more a detective noir story which I think was missing in the Batman movies. 9/10
I hoope the next movie is at least as good as this movie

The detective noir element provides a fresh relief from the previous batman series (and that's not to diss the Nolan Batman, those are terrific as well, but the Batman and Robin from the 90s, not so much) and as most of the critics have stated, this is a more darker batman. Now this isn't a origin story, but more of a finding self for the main protagonists. The riddler is quite a maniacal antagonists, leaving a set of clues for Batman after the victims have been brutally murdered. The interest of Catwoman I enjoyed very much, her story is very intertwined with the relation of the mob boss, Falcone. Everything in the plot is done very well, I was never bored and glued on the edge of my seat. Even the slow moments were excellent as well. The special effects and Reeves use of the red and dark colors really stands out. The only minor gripe I can have is that it was a little long. Overall, I would personally give it a 9.5 out of 10. Also, the ending is a nice little treat leaving fans to have fun with the speculation ;)… Expand

Robert Pattinson performs strongly as Batman, but weakly Bruce Wayne. The Riddler's role was also engaging, yet his costume was poorly designed. but it's really different from Christopher Nolan's version the dark knight is a more urban look for the batman and liked that it's like (you 're in the street going to work and there you see batman chasing the joker in the street with his batmobile.

And sorry but Christian bale and Michael Keaton also hat black eye make up under the mask, but in this film it doesn't just magically disappear! All the other Batman movies was just a crowd pleasing blockbuster without showing Batmans internal struggles and etc. also The Batman has one of the best opening and endings in a movie I have ever seen! This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. You know, the Batman had the best shot to be a memorable movie, I expected to guard it in my heart forever, it almost did the job, but because of its prejudice it didn’t quite make the cut.
It’s really sad of how much is made by horrible people who obviously hate children, just look at it. In the superhero movie market there’s an obvious prejudice of children, JUST LOOK AT IT, what MCU and DCEU movie had an child superhero between 2008-2020 (or even before)? All the child actors became lost and quickly replaced (like the daughter of the character ant-man). 2021 was a big progress with the television series wandavision, there were two child superheroes in this show! But it was a difficult time for the child actors, that got replaced each day by one kid older than them, and by Disney’s choice the two characters were killed, what a shame.
Now this movie shows that we are in a deplorable condition, the first draft of the movie “the Batman and the Robin” was great, it really would have showed the world that kids also deserve respect. But by demand of the company Warner Brothers Robin was completely taken down of the film (and the actor that worked day by day hard on the movie discarded like it was a parasite.). We are lucky that the script got leaked, or otherwise we would see the prejudice, but not understand that it wasn’t the director’s fault, but a company move.
The movie is still great, but it feels empty, when Batman is driving the bat-mobile you can feel the lack of the boy wonder driving a bike at his side, when (spoilers) the bomb hits Alfred you can feel that Robin should have been there at his side, (when Batman is on the hospital is obvious that they reused the scene were he demanded Robin to shut up and go back to sleep while he talked with Alfred, but sadly it got edited). The Bruce Wayne of this film was and is criticized and with all right, because he only made sense if he was passing on the crisis that is being a father that wants to be relatable to his kid. Not only that but all children on this movie are depicted as sad and annoying little brats that only suffer, a truly sad state to Hollywood.
Now every time that you see the movie, remember, Robin should be there. All the emotion, character development and dynamics left out.
The saddest thing was the Batman and Catwomen kiss scene, were in realty it was supposed to be focused on Robin, jealous of that woman stealing his man, with an entire flashback of the beautiful night Dick and Bruce got to know each other, they had finnaly found love in their life, together, it would have been a masterpiece.
Now all we can do is show that we want children in our movies, and that we are ashamed of this prejudice happening for years and years at this point. #realesetheRobincut… Expand

1. It's the film too long? No, I didn't notice that almost 3 hours passed cause the tone, the vibe was so intriguing that kept me hook to the screen all that time.
2. Was the acting of Robert Pattinson good enough to please the Batman's fans? For me, yes it is. Batman's character it is driven by vengeance, a lone vigilante who doesn't feel ok with killing but can't stand injustice, not so chatty, with a heavy past, a burden, not been able to solve his parent's murder, so from time to time he has some emotional burst, completely understandable.
3. The Batman-Catwoman interaction was classic, well performed, as it's supposed to be. It made recall the old batman classics.
4. Jim Gordon was terrifically well performed by Jeffrey Wright.
There are so many aspects to recall about the film looking for perfection (status that actually doesn't exist) that I could go on for a big while, detractors, those who whine for every plausible things they didn't liked of the film, they will never be pleased, they will always complain. Best Batman movie by far. Nolan put his own spin on the charecter and moved away from cannon. Great movie.. but a hella dark one. It's also pretty long too, it's almost 3 hours. Robert might have not been the best choice for batman in my opinion though.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. this movie was amazing! they really thought of making a good movie rather than just a cliché superhero movie. I wouldn't call this a Comic book movie, it was literal CINEMA and even tho it had its fair share of problems, it was one of the best movies of the last couple of years. the director/cinematographer match was literal perfection. and Paul dano did a wonderful job same as always, and I don't think i need to tell you, Robert Pattinson is not just a pretty boi anymore! his recent movies have been amazing and he is an amazing actor. the only thing i would change is to maybe add 20 more minutes to the movie to see Bruce and Alfred connect a little because their connection wasn't really explored until after Alfred almost died. it would be nice to connect with him a little more before thinking he is dead. overall this movie is amazing and i totally recommend it IF you like long movies. this movie is not for everyone, certainly not for people who just watch comcic book movies. if you like thriller slow paced movie you will fall in love with this movie same as I did. im pretty sure the sequel will be much better as the director will have more freedom… Expand
