In my personal POV, the film lacks emotion for the story and the characters. I don't know for sure but it seems too shallow which is ironic because the film is so long. It's still worth watching if wandering about the Batman reboot - how it didn't synchronize with the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) and how the acting of Robert Pattinson - the famous Twilight Movie Star and Zoë Kravitz - the daughter of famous celebrity. In addition, the movie ambiance is really well-made through dark theme, cold tone, and ofc the cinematography is magnificent. Tbh, I'm not a film expert, I'm just a moviegoer and cinephile. I didn't watch the trailer and didn't try to find any info about this film to prevent my personal expectations. Overall, I am neither disappointed nor dissatisfied.

So does the film deliver an excellent take onThe Batman is no doubt one of my favourite superheroes. After the slightly disappointing utilization of Batman in the DCEU, we get another interpretation of Batman from director Matt Reeves. So does the film deliver an excellent take on Batman or is it another disappointing utilization?

The biggest thing I appreciate about this film is that IT IS a fresh and new take on Batman. One of the iconic titles of Batman is that he is the "World's greatest detective" but we never see that get explored in any of the previous Batman movies. Matt Reeves focuses on this aspect of Batman throughout with him using his smarts to solve the mystery. Instead of this being the generic superhero movie, it instead feels more like a detective, noir, thriller and I love that. The story itself is very engaging and I love watching Batman try to unravel the mystery. It is also a very grounded and more realistic take on the character. It never feels like Batman is superhuman or using gadgets that are too futuristic. For example, the Batmobile is not a super over the top military tank-like in The Dark Knight trilogy or the DCEU. It's just a muscle car with a giant engine and it is still awesome nonetheless. It helps bring you into the world and also really makes the audience feel like Batman could get hurt in these fights.

The cinematography in The Batman is gorgeous. There are so many shots in this film that make the city of Gotham feel alive. It is the best looking Batman movie so far. On that note, I love the interpretation of Gotham in this film. It is dark and grim which illustrates how much of a hell hole Gotham is. Despite that, the city still feels alive at times and there are moments where Gotham can still look beautiful which shows worth in Batman protecting Gotham. The music is scored by Michael Giacchino and it is phenomenal. The music score he made elevates every scene and fits the story being told. He also made a new theme for Batman and it might become one of the most iconic Batman theme songs because it is THAT GOOD! There isn't a lot of action sequences in this film but when there are, it is pretty good. They're not going to blow you away like the Batman v Superman (2016) warehouse sequence but they are still fun nonetheless. Although, there is a very awesome car chase sequence and it might be one of the best I've seen in a Batman film ever.

Robert Pattinson is awesome as the titular character Batman. The way Robert moves and the way he talks as Batman is just a sight to behold. He actually makes me believe that criminals would be scared of him. I also love that his Batman is flawed and makes mistakes. I also appreciate that he does go through character development with him learning a massive lesson by the end. Colin Farrell is also great as the Penguin. Props to the makeup artist as he looks unrecognizable as the character. Praise must also be given to Colin himself as the way he speaks just works for the character and it doesn't sound like how he does in any previous movies. Additionally, Paul Dano as Riddler is exceptional casting. The Riddler as a character is incredibly goofy but Paul Dano manages to make him feel genuinely creepy and smart. The Riddler feels like a worthy adversary to Batman in this film. The rest of the cast also do a great job. Andy Serkis isn't in the film much as Alfred but I love this more fatherly take on him. Jeffrey Wright gives a more buddy cop take as Gordon with his friendship with Batman being a highlight in the film. Zoë Kravitz gives a more emotional take as Selina. John Turturro makes Carmine Falcone feel dangerous. However, I was a little disappointed by how "Bruce Wayne" was in the film. What makes Batman great is that Bruce Wayne is a different persona from Batman. Bruce Wayne acts like a playboy and party-goer while Batman is the broody vigilante. Unfortunately, there is no difference between Bruce and Batman in this film. Batman is broody and so is Bruce Wayne which is a shame as I think this is a great aspect of the character. I get why they went in this direction as in the film Bruce only wants to be Batman. Still, I would've liked to see Robert give two different performances for these personas instead of just one broody performance. I also have an issue with the relationship between the two characters which feels very unearned and sudden. Not going to spoil it but you can probably guess who. Overall, this is the best Batman movie since The Dark Knight (2008). Matt Reeves delivers a terrific Batman movie. It is a gripping detective thriller that is no doubt one of the most gorgeous superhero movies to date. Furthermore, a stellar cast that all give remarkable performances, an amazing music score by Michael Giacchino and enjoyable action sequences. The Batman is still one of the best to be done in live-action and I am glad to see that there are directors who can still give us something new with Batman. Can't wait for the future of this Batman franchise!

So many elements of the film, from its detective noir story following a Jeffrey Dahmer esque Riddler villain, (masterfully played by Paul Dano), to its more internal struggle of Robert Pattinson's Batman two years into his fight for Gotham city. Matt Reeves The Batman is a spin on the caped crusader that has not been put to film in quite this same way by other directors. The film is crafted masterfully by excellent directing, acting, beautiful cinematography, and a great score. While weighing in at nearly three hours in length, the film surprisingly doesn't have much drag to it because of the expert pacing. With a trilogy and a pair of television shows planned from this point, Matt Reeves' The Batman is an excellent first step into a new universe. Expand

Bruce Wayne (not Batman), Penguin, and especially the Riddler felt out-of-character and away from what makes them so distinct as characters. I get that this is a much darker take on the story, but at the end of the day they didn't go as far with that concept as they should have. We have none of the charm or the wit that makes Batman... BATMAN, and so at 3 hours this movie is a bit too intense to sit through without enough of that good old-fashioned humor. Zoe Kravitz nailed it as Catwoman, and Robert Pattinson is still a very capable Batman with a LOT of potential to improve. I'm excited to see the next movie, even if I am rather critical of this film here. Still incredible in terms of atmosphere, soundtrack, and very good acting. Worth seeing for every Batman fan. Expand

That is not year one or the beginning of his story! What is the point of Catwoman? Without her, it would make a story the same. She's awkward eye candy, with the message: White rich people are bad. The movie looks good and some scenes are pretty good, but they won't save the full movie. Actors did good jobs. At last, Batman should be IMO the sneaking creeping fear, a symbol of hope is Superman! It's very reminiscent of "Se7en". The rider is totally insane and at the end you have to hit people to make them react (just like Se7en's killer). Impeccable performances. Edward Cullen goes from being a stupid vampire to a smart bat. Catwoman does a good job. Falcone is the fearsome crime boss and the Penguin is not far behind climbing the rungs. Bruce's parents are not totally clean. The final cameo lets you wanting to see what is to come for the saga. It is a pretty long and slow movie, it is not for everyone, many will be bored with Batman's voice off saying his thoughts. It is definitely not for children. There isn't much action but it has its 3 moments so you don't get bored with a Batman unleashed. In the end, Batman is what he should be: an altruistic vigilante capable of doing the impossible to save his beloved Gotham. If they took 20 minutes out of the 3 hours it would probably be better. But just remember that Batman is a fictional character, and while he is relatable to most of the audience do not add realistic details that ruin important factors about the character. The scenes in this film are gritty, Dark and shot cinematically well. Robert Pattison truly earns his role as The Batman, while Zoe Kravitz needs some work as Catwoman (please give her a proper Mask next time), and the chemistry between The Cat and The Bat falls flat. As for the other actors, they are believable and help settle the plot in an amazing manner. The Bat-suit, the Batmobile The Batcycle, the Batclaw and the Batarang are great and are used effectively. The pacing is good, but the amount of time used in this film is long, chop it down to 10-15 minutes, and rework some stretched-out scenes. Batman's Fighting style is tanky which is not bad just let him show off some more agile moves. The music, the atmosphere and the scenery of this film are near perfection this is truly what Gotham looks like and it is introduced incredibly well (Batman's Opening Scene *Chefs Kiss). Is this a masterpiece compared to Nolan's movies...No, this will not appeal to a normal Marvel/Action Moviegoer but damn this is a Great Batman Film, it's a good Thriller and feels like a play with theatrical epic events with a good moral conclusion which fits well with the character. I would recommend seeing The Batman as soon as possible. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie was well made and well done tbh

1. The film goes the way DC should be, dark gritty, and more. Jokes like the thumb drive joke are how DC comedy is supposed to work not putting some random one or two liners in between
2. The story is perfect and isn't rushed, this is a big plus for me the film was perfectly made and no part for me felt rushed, each character was given time to establish themselves properly and set their own stage. Catwoman was made clear that she doesn't want to be with batman and their part was slowly built up the revelation that Carmine is the main villain and he had Bruce parent murdered was also well handeled.
3. The character selection was great and the way each character was designed and Gotham was just perfect.THe movie is probably one of the most comic-accurate batman films I ever saw and am happy with the way they made it. Riddler Carmine Falcone they were just perfect.
4. The movie has the best soundtrack to any superhero movie till date for me
5. EVen though the movie was amazing one major drawback has to be the climax. It felt like the climax was draggggged a lot and could have been a lot quicker. Cutting at least 8 min.
Other than that finally a batman movie and a great DC movie.

It is a little much how they are calling this a "masterpiece" but that marketing for you.
Rob did a great Batman but a dull uninteresting Bruce Wayne. Catwoman was well casted but as I feared her character is nothing more than a forced plot device, that didn't bring anything exciting to the table. ( Impo I can't stand the romantic tension, that not Batman to me.). To sum it up... First half was pretty awesome! But as the movie kept going everything started to feel flat, and I wish Catwoman was written better or just cut from the movie as I feel it took too much focus away on more important/interesting story telling. Lol the Riddler was bitter sweet by the end and I think the Penguin ended up being the most rememberable character oddly enough.

Finally a true Batman movie, not a Bruce Wayne movie, Batman is in costume 90% of the time and the focus is squarely on Batman from start to finish. An inspired take on Selina Kyle really put this movie over the top, and Kravitz Catwoman played of Pattison's Batman perfectly. This is a long movie, and not perfect, but I like how all the characters tie into the story and each other, so nothing feels unnecessary or out of place. I wasn't totally sold on this twisted version of the Ridder at first but Dano nailed the character. Stunning visuals from start to finish complimented by a strong score made this movie a blast. This is more of a detective noir movie than a superhero one, and wow, is it a breath of fresh air. Reeves does something different and effective with the character and story and I thought it really worked. Giving characters that have always been seen as pillars of good more depth is a great decision.
The acting was good. Was glad that there was much more Batman than Bruce, and thought that Rob did a better job with the former. TLDR: If you like to watch quality films, try it out.

It has a nice balance of grounded and comic book moments. We are seeing Batman (or vengeance) in his infancy so the fact that we get to see him evolving was really cool and it connected with me more because of it. Everybody wants a already prime version of these characters when the journey itself is gonna pay off in the long run. I absolutely cannot wait to see Robert Pattinson truly become the world's greatest detective. Here's hoping Matt Reeves does justice to the world and the characters. Expand

The ultimate cope for Batman geeks, the most fragile and insecure fanbase on the planet. It's too derivative of David Fincher's work and it doesn't do anything the previous Batman movies haven't already done, well the Schumacher ones are excluded since his only contribution was a lot of neon.
The fans of The Batman are quite something else, they give the Nolan/Snyder cult a run for their money, when you point out that the movie is visually ugly and severely underlit, the only retort they have is "go watch Adam West and the Schumacher movies.".

To the people giving the Batman anything more than a 5/10, try watching something other than Star Wars and capesh*t.

My issues being that the penguin was rendered to a minor villain given his notorious reputation, we were barely given any screen time to understand this new iteration of Bruce Wayne as the movie is centred mostly around the detective work of the Batman, and the Riddler's final product was very underwhelming but still gruesome detailing how dangerous he can be.

I seen the trailer and made my call, but she wanted to see it and hooked the kids, I paid over 90 dollars to sit there with one kid a sleep, my wife leaving with the young one a hundred times, and I wouldn't put it past her that she took the little one into another movie for kids, because it wasn't what she hoped for. It was hyped because of the cast and nothing more, and it is seen here in the 10's. Praising it for its plot and great acting, and out of it all it was Kravitz that made what a slog it was and the jumbled mess of scenes running together so fast but not showing the timeframe it took place in. My old lady for what little she did watch called it a bad seven reboot, I can't say she is far off. The few high points were the trailer scenes at the beginning, about middle and the close end. It could've been an hr if that of run time and still told the story, but everything was drawn out and over acted or not acted at all in alot of the film, out of having the most bad guys in a super hero movie wasn't any of them a threat of had you going I hope its going to be ok, because you knew even when someone was going to die ahead of time. The music was pretty decent for the dark gritty take, the way it was shot was almost Tim Burton in a way with a modern city. It kept spinning wheels but no one character got much screen time for the thing being 3 hrs and that was the saddest of it all really, coming from Reeves who isn't the best director, but isn't bad either, and thats where this 200 plus million movie falls into, its not bad but its not good either, and I do feel ripped off and cheated because of the hype and higher price tag the tickets were. And to add at all the fan boys of pattison, even though Nolan isn't the director the Reeves is all his Batman movies made every scene count and that's why I'm saying this doesn't hold a candle to his version because he hit it on all accounts, even though he let Hardy make a mocking of Bane in some ways. The Batman is utter crap.

Incredibly mediocre in concept, plot, action, and performance. Blandly noir in style. At LEAST an hour longer than its plot merits on account of a red herring (a predictable red herring) that takes up the entire second act.

The soundtrack consists of mostly the two chords from Nirvana’s “Something in the Way”, and Bruce Wayne, in the few moments that the movie allows the character to exist at all, is tediously ‘emo’.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It was alright I guess.

Overly long, crap car chases, not as smart as it thinks it is so a bit slow and boring a lot of the time, but I didn't drift off once! The imagery is nice but all that was shown in the trailers. Music was meh, 4 notes and man cashes a cheque? Landed on your feet there Mike!

That said the performances were all great, Farrell was amazing, and the story was pretty good. Looked nice, although it looked like a tracing of a Nolan comic with some red splashed about to make it different-ish.

I'd say the run time was an issue. Hopefull in a sequel they will have the confidence to trim a little more fat.

A fair few plot holes; why is everyone going along the ground in a flood rather than up? There's multi-story buildings everywhere in the city, just go up two floors! Also the Riddler won, he killed everyone he wanted too and destroyed the city, it's Atlantis at the end, there's no way the subway system and everything above could be rescued, they would have to pump out the entire sea after they rebuilt the walls.

Final note, at the end Catwoman comes to the rescue after checking out, but we get shots of her both arriving at the stadium and inside the stadium so it's not a suprise when she helps, this is pretty basic stuff.

First I am going to say Patrick and Selina are fantastic actors. Patrick has to be one of the best Batmans and Selina was good, not great... just good. The director Matt Reeves, sucks. I'm sorry... He butchered the movie, "Let Me In." Which was a copy cat of a(n) original. And since the company wanted seriousness, well who better than Matt Reeves. The Batman character introduction is so stiff, he walks like he has pole up his bun. Also the rain... OMG it rains in almost every scene. I'm surprised a freaking flash flood warning didn't appear on Batman's cellphone. Penguin seems to have a difficult time with his acting... The Riddler is so Cringe... Also they are always whispering... There's no one on the freaking rooftop... Why are they whispering with pounding rain? The beginning of the movie started great all to go to hell once the fighting started... "MORE RAIN PLEASE!!!" If you're wondering there also fire in the rain, yep... gun fights in the rain... yep explosions in the rain. Batman walking in the rain... yep. If you love rain this is your movie. Cliche after cliche... It's such a bad movie. Drug factory, been there done that. Bodies in the back of a car... yep. Keep in mind we are living in a cancel culture and we are also living in a world where it's easy for people to put up a few sentences and say something is good. amateur technical review of "The Batman" by: Lucas Freire

Photography:
I don't remember a superhero movie with as much attention from the producers as "The Batman". It's as if they really wanted to be remembered for photography, the fact that the color palettes and the city of "Gotham" were very special and combined just made it all better. With landscapes seen from large buildings and the mix of orange and bitterness of "Gotham" shows that they used the advantage of the character "Batman" to show everything from above.

Tone:
The atmosphere that the film passes is good, but it leaves something to be desired when we talk about "Batman", I thought that in good parts we could have understanding and more perception of what is happening. In the interrogation scene of "Batman" and "Riddler" there could be more use of sounds to create a mood, although it is easy to identify the tension we would still have more use. Not only in this part, but in several moments of acute tension, the film fails to fix the viewer's large and super attentive eyes.

Soundtrack and sounds:
Simply fantastic the soundtrack, along with the photography of "Gotham" everything was harmonic. The sung and applied form of the song "Ave Maria" is also friendly to the dark and macabre mood of the film. The specific sounds I found to be desired, but not so much. This is to blame for the film's miserable failure to hold the viewer's attention in moments of tension, even having some more fixating dialogue.

Acting: Fortunately don't identify a tempting flaw either by facial or body expression. First I want to talk about the facial which is one of the most important, seeing the cast we can see that it is a first class group with a lot of experience, so there is not much to highlight besides the great faces and mouths of Robert Pattinson both as "Batman" or as " Bruce Wayne", we can see the anger, hatred, fear, surprise, despair mainly and bitterness. But not only him but everyone else has his essence in the film, sensual vulgarity, superiority, distrust and others. In terms of body, I will focus exclusively on combat, which we can say calmly is the best film in terms of the fight choreography of the "superheroes" genre, "Batman" is light, fluid and at its maximum strength, the use of environment objects is very good, the fighting style and combat in general seem very real and with a krav-maga feel.

And pulls in Bat-fans with story arcs from “Long Halloween” and “Batman: Year One” Then subtly goes down a long plot with nearly no “life” from any of its characters as we encounter an emo, juvenile Bruce Wayne whose second year Batman seems nearly indestructible. While the gritty feel and score are things to be desired, a forced plot, slow pacing and weak plot devices steal from this being a great movie more or less a Batman Film. Every trailer and photo I would see from set would make me more and more excited and finally the day came and as I sat through the nearly three hour film, I was left...disappointed. Not because the movie was bad by any means, but because it didn't feel complete. There was no big resolution, there was no tense final standoff and battle of wits. It just...happened. And before I knew it, the film had ended. There was so much potential to be touched upon and I really thought we were finally going to have a Batman movie that could explore parts of Batman that had never been explored before on the big screen. Instead, we were left with an incredibly safe Batman movie that lays down tons of groundwork and definitely sets something up with it's diversity in characters, but other than that really just did not feel like it had a purpose to exist other than to sell merch and keep people interested in the future of DC by saying that SOMETHING may come eventually. I have to hand it to them, because the casting was wonderfully done and I fully appreciated the performances that Colin Farrell and Paul Dano put in as Penguin and Riddler respectfully, and Robert Pattinson shows promise as Batman. There was a lot of things to like here and a lot of things to hate, both culminating in a film with notable spectacles and great action scenes that were too few and far between for me to praise them enough. I really wanted to like this, but there were multiple moments that made me genuinely tired and bored, and even some that irked me, mostly the handling of Catwoman's ambiguous sexuality and her whole character motivation just being downright meaningless. The Batman could have been so much more than just another safe DC film, and it honestly felt like it was marketed as such. I'm hoping that this is just growing pains for the new DC movie lineup and that by the next entry things will be settled in, but for now I worry for what comes next. Expand

There are good moments, however, they are far and few between in this near 3-hour slog. The Riddler is easily the worst part, he is nowhere near true to his comic self, whatsoever. He weirdly moans and sexualizes his crimes, which, while accurate to certain serial killers, makes me feel like this movie was composed by cringey edgelords seeking a 12-17-year-old audience who can't sus out the fact that this movie has no substance. Anyone calling it a detective movie is doing a disservice to you. Batman never solves anything minus a simple riddle. The Riddler is always a step ahead despite him being so sloppy the audience can even recognize him. The Batman himself is so off base and away from the source material. The tactician has become an amateur at his own art, choosing to actively run at people with guns.

The movie's just a mess, it's worth a single watch, but the ending act will leave you wanting, the movie itself may leave you wanting to just stop.

*I would actually put this movie at an 8ish or maybe high 7ish score. But seeing all the idiots giving this a zero for **** reasons kinda pisses me off. It's not a bad movie just because you guys can't sit still for 3 hours. So I am doing a 9*I would actually put this movie at an 8ish or maybe high 7ish score. The negative reviews really show you how Marvel/Disney has completely screwed up people's attention spans. The movie is long, but it's pretty good. There are some really nice moments and shots in there. It's definitely not perfect, but people saying it's "SOOOO BORING"... maybe for them, but I kinda liked how slow paced it was at times. It leans more into the detective side of Batman rather than just explosive set pieces all the time with just non-stop action. However, it does have that action... it's just not the sole focus of the film. The slow moments in the beginning and world building actually help build up tension for when all that action finally breaks out which makes it more satisfying overall.

Part of the problem I have with so many Superhero flicks is that eventually I experience diminishing returns and even though there is a LOT going on on screen, it bores me. Non-stop action leaves me desensitized and becomes meaningless/boring. This movie actually balances the slow moments with the action-packed moments rather well and I appreciate that since a lot of movies don't seem to be interested in doing that nowadays. Again, it's not a masterpiece, but it is a welcome sight for me to see some superhero flicks kinda try to mesh with other genres instead of just being "ACTION! ACTION! ACTION!". This movie definitely has some Detective Noir influences which has ALWAYS been a core inspiration for Batman as a character, but has been largely ignored in movie adaptations of Batman. Idk... it's nice actually seeing the detective side on the big screen to a character with the nickname "World's Greatest Detective".

I can definitely say that this is better than Batman vs. Superman and Gotham for me. Those were... uhhh... not good in my humble opinion. I am not sure if I like it more than the Nolan series. I would say it's better than Dark Knight Rises, but I don't how it would compare to Dark Knight and Batman Begins for me. I would probably have to see it a few more times.

Anyway tangent over... it's good, but it definitely can be a slow burn at times. Slow burns doesn't mean "BAD BORING MOVIE" as so many reactionaries on this site seem to think... it just means it's for a different type of audience than the normal superhero "thrill a minute" blockbuster crowd.
