This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. OK, There are spoilers in this writeup. This is your warning. The first thing I will say is Christopher Nolan set the bar very high. To this day I still watch the original trilogy many times and love them to bits. There were subtle issues like Bane should have been played by a bigger Spanish actor, or that Ra's al Ghul should have been played by a more Asian actor. Point noted, but the characters and their portrayal in the films were very good.
Coming back to The Batman. Batman was casted perfectly, the film was dark and music / atmosphere superb. Where the film let itself down. Here we go..... Batman came across weak, direct in confrontations, no real strategy, takes gunshot hits, rifle hits direct to body and carries on fighting. The fight sequences were sloppy. Now Batman wears black, he comes out at night for a reason. Where were his weapons, stealth, use of the darkness, smoke, stun grenades, strategy. His an expert martial artist, knows ninjutsu, the art of deception. Remember that starting out with less kit. The man should have been more stealth, more indirect, more strategy His not starting out, his already equipped mentally and physically. The guy knows why his doing this. If you want to know more about what I mean. Play the games Arkham Asylum, Arkham City, Arkham Origins and Arkham Knights on the ps3, ps4. Play the games in normal mode and go up against the enemies directly with no strategy and you will see what happens. Batman dies. Remember this very important thing when you are watching batman films. His not a f$%king super hero with special powers that protect him. His just a good hearted, righteous rich kid, who's parents were murdered. So he decides to do something to make a difference for the people of Gotham. Now this is why I love and respect Batman / Bruce Wayne so much. He has all the money in the world and can move on and live a wonderful comfortable life in rich surroundings. But no, he makes a stand for justice, and to do the right thing, and bring criminals to justice. Using his money to aid him.
The casting of Catwoman as a black woman, changing her background, for me was wrong. The casting of Commissioner Gordan as a black man was wrong. Went against the batman lore and the comics in my eyes. I'm sorry but if you don't like this, tough. I have nothing against black actors. One of my best is Morgan Freeman. Love the guy. Watch some of his films like The Shawshank Redemption.
Now we move on to the story, the riddler and the penguin were not vicious, evil enough. These are f$%ked up in the head characters. They did not scare or intimidate. Think of the joker in The dark Knight. This guy f$%king put you in your place. He made you feel uneasy, uncomfortable, scared. Personally if I'd had to be close to the joker. I'd be 10 feet away with a automatic machine gun pointed to his head. One move and his dead. That's how much I'd trust the guy. A f$%ked up in the head, unpredictable guy.
Now when you point a gun at your enemy at point blank range. What I would like to know is how the f$%k did catwoman miss her f$%king target. Secondly when the lady going for election gets shot in the stomach by a sniper round. How the f$%k did she survive that. Thirdly how does batman survive being shot by multiple attackers with automatic machine guns at point blank range and beats them all up. Please help me on these points. Catwoman manages to conceal a gun and get past Falcone's security. What rubbish. The action sequences were boring and the final sequence boring. What I would like to know is where did the f$%king $200 million in making the film go. Did the actors get most of it. Because I sure hell did not see much in the film.
Go if you must to watch it and see for yourself. But I think these days cinema has been going downhill for the last 15 years. The reviewers have been bought and there is no originality or risk any more in making controversial films any more. On top of this we now have the Woke **** So this is my opinion. Hope you enjoyed the review. Just trying to be honest, from a genuine Batman fan.

There's definite room for improvement in the sequel. I think the film would have benefited with being an R rating, the PG-13 watered the action down too much. I was glad to get my money's worth with 3-hours run-time, but it felt too long overall and the film dragged in parts. All the actors were excellent, but the star was the unrecognisable Collin Farrell as the Penguin. Bonus points for a great car chase and fight in a nightclub. Shame it was shot digitally. There was also a collective audible groan in the screening following the line 'white male privilege.' Expand

The big problem with gritty, dark, "realistic" batman movies is that Bruce Wayne the billionaire could do far more good for Gotham with his money than vigilante Wayne with his gadgets and fists. The decision to go for a "realistic" batman is particularly ironic considering the limited action scenes; in particular the one where batman slams into a bridge after jumping off a building. the overlong movie should've ended there. Not to mention the woke politics behind the plot. Literally EVERY corrupt politician is a white male, while the new mayor that’s trustworthy is a black woman. Catwoman complaining abt white privilege is a joke too. The only reason I’m giving this a 3 is because of the great performance as BATMAN by Pattinson, not Bruce Wayne. Penguin and riddler were decent too. Overall, slow boring snoozefest, with only a couple of cool scenes, and an ending that is anticlimactic. Very disappointed. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This scrip is moronic. There are so many plot holes that destroys the Riddler's entire plot, and makes Batman the worst detective ever. The photograph the Riddler takes that is shown at the start of the movie should have lead Batman right to him instantly. That alone proves how little people pay attention these days. I am glad that I did not waste my money on this, and cannot wait to see everyone flip in a year when they realize how bad it really was, just like The Force Awakens. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pattinson is not Batman! Pet'itson may be a good actor, but he is not a good Batman. Actually he is the second worst batman of all time. The movie has some nice action scenes, that’s where Putitinson holds his mouth. But in between it is so utter boring. The Riddler is portrayed as a pathetic nerd. AND the leather mask from batman is bullet proof. Pityhisson should have died at least 5 times during all the shootings, but nooo … the bullets hit only his body armour which is indestructible yet still so easy to move in. Expand

I might be speaking with a bit of "recency bias," but I THINK this is one of the best DC movies yet: They did a great job at making things feel a bit more realistic in this version of Batman. This was coupled with amazing settings, scenery and atmosphere, I don’t think there was a single sunny day in Gotham.

I was absolutely blown away by Robert Pattinson's rendition of Batman! I was one of the initial naysayers who "Didn't want no... “TWILIGHT BOY” in their Batman movie!" But I was surprised and humbled by his stellar performance as a younger and grungier version of Batman/Bruce Wayne (He's certainly better than the LAST guy who played Batman).
Hell, even if Pattinson ended up doing a poor job, all the other actors would have covered for him: Zoë Kravitz might be the best Selina Kyle yet, I still refuse to believe that that was Colin Farrell portraying The Penguin! Dude literally disappeared into that role both literally and figuratively. Paul Dano took the role of The Riddler to places I would never imagine the role could go. Jeffrey Wright and Andy Serkis put their own unique spins on their respective roles.

If I were to give ONE "harsh" critique on the film, "The Batman" feels a bit too much like one of the Christopher Nolan Batman movies. Which isn't a terrible thing, I suppose. This movie is certainly a must for any fan of Superheroes so go watch it ASAP. And make sure to go potty before the movie starts cuz it’s a long one!

Visually it's a cross between Seven and Blade Runner. And you'd have to go back to the Burton's films that explore what an isolated, f'd up person Bruce Wayne/Batman truly is. As Willow Pill described being a drag queen as "mental illness with rhinestones", the Batman could be described as mental illness with costumes. And money. And weapons. And most of all, vengeance. The cast from Robert Patterson, Zoe Kravitz, Jeffrey Wright, to John Turturro and of course, Colin Farrell covered in prosthetics and dialing in a performance just this side of Al Pacino in Dick Tracy, is marvelous. And Paul Dano is a psychopath for the ages. My only complaints is that the film veers towards Roland Emmerich territory in the final acts, and the fact that in such a grounded film, Alfred survives an explosive attack, hospitalized, with hardly a scratch. Overwise, great job. Expand

Alright folks, it's the moment we've been waiting for, well it's definitely the moment I've been waiting for. A new Batman movie has appeared in cinemas again and if someone told me ten years ago that I'd be excited for a new Batman movieAlright folks, it's the moment we've been waiting for, well it's definitely the moment I've been waiting for. A new Batman movie has appeared in cinemas again and if someone told me ten years ago that I'd be excited for a new Batman movie starring Robert Pattinson I'd never have believed them. The Batman is right up there as one of the best comic-book movies. No DC movie has been this good since The Dark Knight.

Psychotic serial killer, The Riddler (Paul Dano) sends Gotham into a panicked frenzy when he begins murdering key political figures and leaves cryptic clues for his next victims. Knowing this is just the beginning, Batman (Robert Pattinson) must investigate amongst rampant corruption to find The Riddler before more people are brutally murdered.

Robert Pattinson plays Bruce Wayne like we haven't seen on the big screen before. Riddled with trauma he is desperate to live his life as Batman and abandon Bruce Wayne altogether. Honestly he is in such a mood for the whole film. I'm very happy with how he took on the role. Feck the haters, every time a new Batman movie is in the works the haters emerge from all over to voice their anger towards whoever gets cast in a major role, be it hero or villain. Well Pattinson has come a long way since Harry Potter and Twilight, working alongside directors such as David Cronenberg, Robert Eggers, and Christopher Nolan. The list goes on and now in 2022 he's the Batman. Fair play to him, he completely disappeared into the role.

Director Matt Reeves certainly knew what he was doing when he gathered the cast for The Batman, honestly I was excited for this once I heard Paul Dano would be playing The Riddler, I can think of no better actor who can play that role. He's absolutely mental. Also starring Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, she owns every scene she's in, totally kicking ass. My favourite onscreen portrayal of Catwoman since Michelle Pfeiffer in Batman Returns. We've all seen the pictures of Colin Farrell as The Penguin, completely unrecognisable is an understatement. I have to admit it was hard to imagine an adaptation of The Penguin that would fit the tone of a realistic Batman movie and not end up looking completely ridiculous but this works. Robert Pattinson and Zoë Kravitz have amazing chemistry together, they were both perfect casting. You also have Jeffrey Wright as Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred and John Turturro as the feared mob boss Carmine Falcone. This is what a superhero film should be like, get a director who knows what he's doing, has a clear vision for the film and assemble the cast they want and you end up with thrilling experience that leaves the audience wanting more.

I love the dark and gritty city of Gotham, drenched in rain, gloomy and gothic. Wayne Manor looked like a neglected castle from a Tim Burton movie. The whole tone of the film has a similar feel to it like Nolan's Batman trilogy but with even more violence. Pattinson is perfect for capturing the dark and brooding 'orphan billionaire'. The score by Michael Giacchino is absolutely stunning. Perfectly complimenting the movie in every scene. What more can I say, I absolutely loved it. It's stunning, the cinematography is perfection, the fight scenes and car chases are exhilarating. The scene where the Batmobile makes its roaring entrance was brilliant. The entire cinema loved every minute of it. I'm already dying for a sequel. I cannot wait to see what the combination of Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson will do next.

The Batman definitely feels like more of a psychological crime thriller than a superhero movie. That's not a criticism, I loved the tone of Reeve's Batman. It's giving strong Se7en and The Zodiac Killer vibes. Dano's sadistic portrayal of The Riddler is everything I'd hoped it would be and more. A thrilling reboot that all you comic-book fans need to see. Highly recommended for all the Batman fans.

Numerous times, he gets absolutely destroyed and not even a scratch or damage to the armor or a scar on part of the face that is not covered...nothing
First he is running away from cops, uses his wingsuit to escape and falls down after hitting a bridge or something AND slams onto the ground. A small grunt was the only thing that happened.
After that, he gets blasted by a bomb that blew up right in front of his face that made him fly across the church hall...Next scene, he`s completely fine, not a problem...
Finally, as the movie was slowly coming to a closure, he eats a bunch of automatic riffle bullets, while casually walking towards the two thugs shooting him and, of course, without twitching, takes them down... I mean, what the fck...
His fighting is clumsy and for someone who is in the role of Batman for two years should have made him more experienced.
There were NEVER any consequences to his actions. Riddler all of the sudden figuring out that Bruce is Batman was not even it...
Speaking of Bruce...In this movie, he is depicted as someone who does not care about his life, not even trying to be Bruce Wayne, as depicted in the comics and other movies...
In Batman Begins, Alfred tells Bruce that he has to do things he is not comfortable with like, spending money on cars and buying hotels, being a rich douche...Which he does, knowing that THAT separates him from his alter ego, while also protecting the people close to him.
In this movie, there is none, NONE !
Him realizing at the end, I must be more that vengeance does not overwrite all the bad **** throughout the movie.
The chemistry between him and Catwoman was pretty much forced and felt rushed.
They barely have any real interactions and all of the sudden she kisses him...If Reeves left that to happen later in his vision of Batman`s life, it would have been done way smoother and more understandable.
Also, when it comes to Selina, I have to mention *that* line... She says "White privileged a**holes"... That was not needed. Riddler felt like the only part of the movie that I liked, UNTIL Reeves ruined him.
From the very beginning, his plan was to unravel the corrupt city officials and violently expose them. Which was from a villain stand point a good start. He felt creepy, brutal and he was showing what he was doing to everyone and people of Gotham actually started cheering for him (Major funeral scene, as Bruce was arriving)
And by the end of the movie, once he`s caught, Batman reveals his ultimate plan...which was to... kill innocents by flooding the entre city ? What ?
Reeves built a character that already had a premise and was well written, only to retcon his decisions at the end and make him a serial murderer of innocent people....
I also liked Colin`s Penguin adaptation, his acting and looks fully made a fresh, great take on a classic comic villain. He was always Batman`s punching bag and at least that has not changed...
The Batmobile was also awesome, as a car guy, I was blown away.
The soundtrack was ok, the bat and cat themes were good.
Overall, even those good things do not make up for such a bad movie for me.

I thought about not including the Joker in this review but I cannot not mention him.
Batman movies nowadays suffer from Joker fatigue. Batman has so so many comic book villains that could be used in Reeves' universe, and ground them instead of making all fantasy like.
Mad Hatter, Calendar Man, Victor Zsasz, Death Stroke (Even tho he doesn't fit in within the theme of the first movie) heck, even Killer Croc where he could be a dude who's a cannibal... ANYTHING of that but the Joker...
This version clearly tries too hard to be like Ledger, just by listening to him. He's voice is very similar to him, it's very see-through.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Batman is an incredible film with not much problems dragging it down. The cinematography is the best I've seen in a superhero movie in a long time. This movies looks better than Dune and that's a long feet. The vibe of Gotham is literally what you would expect Gotham to be, this **** hole place filled with corrupt leaders and insane criminals. Pattinson's portrayal as Batman is just really damn good, I think it's a tie against Bale's Batman. Riddler as a villain may not be Heath Ledger level but he is definitely 2nd place. His reasoning for everything he did fits perfectly well with Bruce's journey into becoming the hope of Gotham.
The movie is much more of a detective film compared to the other movies. It's a cat and mouse chase just like any other detective but this one is done really well in particular. Some of the reveals will surprise or excite you for what will happen next and the movie rarely diverts away from that main plot.
Every actor did wonderful in this film with Robert being the carrier. The arc Bruce goes through and finding out the secrets of his family into becoming the hope Gotham needs rather than the revenge fueled man he was at the beginning was absolutely astonishing. There are basically sorta 2 plots in this film. Number 1 is his chase for the Riddler and 2nd is him finding out the truth about Gotham and his family's past. All this plot concludes with an ending that wraps itself really well and feels as though all the suffering everyone goes through has lead to this final moment.

Flaws
1. Robert Pattinson's acting as Bruce Wayne. I understand the criticism of Bruce Wayne and Batman being the same character personality wise but I disagree that it is a fair criticism. His entire motivation in 90% of the film was him not caring to be Bruce Wayne. He doesn't care if he is a Wayne and he doesn't care about his public image. My criticism is how he looks. He looks way too emo to be Bruce Wayne and he never changes his voice when he is Bruce Wayne. I know he doesn't care but he should care about people finding out that he is Batman. He also doesn't feel rich, there is really no scene that shows the fact that he is very wealthy. His appearance has Bruce Wayne always feels a little flat

2. Luck and coincidences
For example, after Gill Colson explodes in front of Batman's face (I have no idea why he is so close to a bomb that's gonna explode in seconds, he wouldn't have time cover his face and somehow his face remains clean), the police waited to bring him atop the police station and then starts to question whether they should take his mask off. Lucky him.
And another one which is the biggest sin. In the final riddle, he happens to be helped by a police officer that happens to be there and he also happens to know stuff about carpet which helped Batman to solve the riddle. This is so damn lucky and lazy by the writers. Looks like they got tired making things happen for a reason so instead things just happen because they do. 3. The length
This movie is almost 3 hours long and I think after watching it, you can trim out some bits that isn't really needed (which would prolly be like 10-20 minutes). Some scenes where Bruce is drawing the clues on his floor or scenes where he is walking through the crime scene could be sped up a bit or chopped down cuz it feels long and nothing interesting is really happening. Other than that, it's still an incredible film. My actual score is an 8.8 (very close to a 9) but metacritic includes no decimals so I'm giving it a 9. It's my favorite movies from DC since The Joker and The Suicide Squad.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Really great and engaging movie. It takes Batman to a different level from previous movies, the horror batmam, a lot of times we feel the villains fear of batman and in a lot of ways that wasn't repetitive at all, the direction knew how to not get boring with time and it clearly works. This movie got some little jokes too here and there and they work well within the story. We could see a lot of good acting too on this film, although sometimes I wanted to kindaaa laugh when I think I weren't supposed to. VFX were actually great and seamless throughout the movie and made a good experience. Love interest it's ok, I just hated the bike scene in the end, like why, just say goodbye that's enough, but this is truly personal of my way of thinking in direction. Anyway, overall this is a GREAT Batman movie with a new and good take on the hero, some scenes I personally think doesn't work as well as they should or are unecessary. Overall really liked the film Expand

Reeves and Pattinson together have developed a more brooding and vengeful batman who is the most present figure in the movie. Reeves seems much more interested in diving deep into the "Batman" persona fully then trying to balance it out with the seemingly sidelined alter ego of Bruce Wayne. Pattinson shines as well as he can in the new (awesome looking) bat suit, of which he does roughly 85% of his scenes in. Zoe Kravitz did predictably great work in what I ultimately thought was a role and arc that could of used some more development or thought. Major all time batman movie highlights I will remember from this movie include: The Soundtrack, the car chase seen, and the Riddler prison scene. Expand

The characters of James Gordon, Selina Kyle & Penguin standout and I look forward to seeing more of their character arcs. Pattinson's portrayal of Bruce Wayne isn't quite there yet but he does pull off a good Batman.

Matt Reeves had a great take on the story and this is the best rendition of Gotham we've seen so far outside of comics. My only nitpick is that 'The Batman' movie starts to feel like a slow burner of a movie that ends with a bang but the ending didn't quite hit the home run.

But with the end credits/last scene in Arkham my excitement for the sequel and expectations are sky high! This movie is a must watch even if super hero movies aren't your preference 'The Batman' will still entertain you.

Crow and Seven were far superior and the very obvious inspiration for this version of Batman. The love is for the dark atmosphere and sullen Bruce Wayne, which was okay but needed an R rating to be effective. Riddler was no where near as intelligent as the writers wanted him to be. His garbage bag uniform was poorly constructed and his character was totally undone in the third act. The penguin was an awful villain and only played a small role in what was an excellent car chase scene. Zoe was one of the best Cat Woman I've seen, she did a great job. Music was good, I enjoyed Batman's theme. Batman mingling with cops and the public upset me, it was such a detour of who his character is. As always these days, atmosphere and cool shots seem more important to directors than actual story. I have no interest in seeing a sequel. For sure this movie benefited from a long Covid lock down, people's excitement to get back to the movies overflowed into their general senses. Okay movie - not the Batman I'm looking for. Expand

Just not amazing. Like a lot of big budget, well made films. They seem to have splashes of brilliance, but lose momentum. This film did just that.

Unlike Nolan’s masterpiece, it manages to keep pace and intrigue over a long period of time.

PERFECTION
Matt Reeves' "The Batman" is the ultimate comic book movie, thriller movie, action movie, and, in my opinion, movie full stop.

This Batman really embodies the side of the character where he is a myth, a legend, a force to fear. After just two years of taking up the mantle Bruce struggles with the balance of his two lives and it just speaks more to the ending where he finally finds his place as the Batman that he is.
Paul Dano's Riddler is incredible. It is a wildly different take on the character yet keeps his core characteristics. He. Is. Scary.
The music for this movie is Oscar-worthy. It ties all the elements of this movie together and presents the mood very well.
Matt Reeves' cinematography is pure perfection. Every single shot is impactful and beautiful.

"The Batman" is the best movie of all time.

For the first time in a live action version, Batman is the most interesting character. This is a character study on Batman and is far from the usual comic book fare. It is a refreshing direction that is slow and methodical. Though it is technically not an origin story, it weaves the beginning tales of iconic characters masterfully. Robert Pattinson as Batman and Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon specifically were highlights as their partnership was truly believable. Wright’s Gordon in particular felt very world weary as it felt like Gotham was consuming him. That leaves Gotham itself as it can clearly be seen how wretched the city is as it consumes everyone living in it. While the plot has some minor issues and the pacing is not always perfect, this is the best start yet to a new Batman story. I cannot wait to see where Matthew Reeves takes us next. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie was so incredible dark and grim. Its almost like i would advise anyone with depression and dark thoughts to stay away..
This movie is stripped with over-the-top gadgetry where Batman uses more conventional tools. His Batmobile is just a souped up muscle car. Very stripped to the bone.
But the movie is more a noir-gothic detective flick (in colour) with just the right amount of action. Its like Sherlock Holmes in modern times where he dons a cape and a cowl.
They steal a great deal from Finchers Se7en. Especially from when they search The Riddlers apartment is ripped straight out of Se7en.
From there on out its all John Doe and Ledgers Joker motifs.
But the production value is top. Good performances from Pattinson and Wright. However, 3 hours is a tad bit to much. It drags plenty in the end.
But i dont think Batman can be taken more into darkness than this rendition..

My faovirte Batman movie yet. This is the kind of Batman movie I've been waiting for my whole life. Like a live-action episode of Batman: The Animated Series.

It's dark and realistic, but also stylish and large-scale. It's not limited by a commitment to realism like the Dark Knight trilogy, nor is it burdened by a shared universe like the DCEU. It is its own thing. A moody, disturbing, visually stunning, David Fincher-inspired, three hour long detective epic with some of the best interpretations of the characters ever put on screen.

Robert Pattinson is fantastic as a younger, moodier, and yes, more emo Batman. Paul Dano is straight up terrifying as the Riddler. Colin Farrell is unrecognisable in more ways than one as The Penguin and Zoë Kravitz is easily my favorite live-action Catwoman.

This movie kept me hooked all the way through, even if I said before, the third act is its weakest part. But that's like saying that the cone is the worst part of an ice cream cone. It's true, but it's still delicious.

This is the best Batman movie. The Dark Knight is good and all, but Reeves finds the perfect mix of gritty realism and style (Nolan would never even dare to have a snorricam shot of Batmam gliding over the city), and finally gives us a live-action Batman that lives up to the title of "World's Greatest Detective". Not that there's much competition, since he's like the only one to actually do any detective work (no, Christian Bale magically finding a fingerprint on a broken bullet doesn't count).

Best atmosphere I’d never seen in a Batman movie. Darker, brutal with a young and clumsy heroe. Batman is constantly evolving. Robert Pattinson is convincing. Maybe the begining of a new DCU with Phoenix’s Joker.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just awful. First to address everyone else’s concerns, yes, the lighting is too dark, the acting is cringeworthy, and the plot would need the world’s greatest detective to even find.

Now, to the main Bat himself. Pattinson is the dullest portrayal I’ve seen yet. He’s a subpar fighter, wearing what must be diamond armor with the flexibility of silk. This man is struck with thousands of bullets, and shows no signs of pain or wavering until the plot calls for it in the climax. This miracle armor is never explained.
Also, instead of the character’s usual tendency to investigate a crime scene solo, Robert ‘Bat’tinson insists on awkwardly shuffling around the room with every other cop, like he’s just some cosplayer Gordon brought in for a ride along. And he is the least intimidating Batman to date, and yes, that’s including TV’s Adam West. In the Dark Knight, we got the interrogation scene where Bale beat Joker to within an inch of his life. Chills. But in this movie? Batman talks to Riddler through a phone…behind glass…and he throws a tantrum asking “What have you doooone?!” over…and over…and over. Lame.
Well, at least Bruce Wayne is portrayed well in this mov-haha! No. Bruce is a moody brat and a recluse that looks like he’d be more at home at a beach bonfire party with a guitar, singing about his ‘deep emotional soul pain!’ Riddler was an embarrassment. He looked like an annoying dweeb. His costume was a gimp suit. I actually forgot about him halfway through the movie because he wasn’t adding anything to the plot. He did get one thing right though: Batman is dumber than he thought. Seriously, why would he think the “rat with wings” would be Penguin? They don’t have wings, so much as they have flippers.

Catwoman was unnecessary. Her outfit was uninspired, and her motivations were confusing, which brings me to:

Annika was…well, actually I have no idea who she was. In the car, Selina calls her “babe”, so my first thought was ‘lover’? But then maybe just a roommate too, I dunno. But Annika is kidnapped by Falcone for…reasons. And her strangled scream is sent as a voicemail to Selina, who in turn goes after Falcone, her (plot twist) father, and tries to shoot him, claiming, “This is for my Mother!” Wait so, is Annika her roommate, friend, lover, sister, mother, or whatever?! I don’t even care, their relation is never clearly established.

And some other irks here and there. I don’t think we even got a clear shot of the batmobile. It was too dark, but it looked uninspired, like something you’d see at a rally track. Batman assaults Gordon and escapes the entire GCPD in a gunfight, then a few scenes later turns in Falcone to the police in person, as if he’s a duly deputized citizen of the law. What the actual hell. Batman only caught Riddler because he let himself be caught.
HOW did the mayor not only survive a sniper shot, but appear in enough health to give a ‘hope speech’ in what would appear to be 1 or 2 in-world hours later?! HOW!?! This movie is a disappointing flop. There are thousands of better things to watch.

In a lot of ways, this is more like a murder mystery, but the serial killer is an early incarnation of The Riddler (a creepy Paul Dano). Sure, Batman gets to whip out some cool gadgets and kick ass, but this iteration is more about his early inner conflicts and finding his footing in the superhero world. Pattinson is suitably sulky and gloomy (much like his fame-making role in the Twilight series). His romantic connection with Catwoman (Zoe Kravitz) has some intense sparks, but it's really about all the dark criminal elements of the city and when I say dark, almost none of the film is shot in daylight. Director Matt Reeves has created some visually arresting moments, but most of the fights are a blur without much clear action. Surprisingly, at almost 3 hours it never lags, partially because Reeves has managed to keep the interactions compelling. This is a worthy and interesting new take on the legend. NOTE: There's a short, dumb bit at the end, so no need to stay, but take a blacklight and check out the hidden message at the top of the poster. Expand

It dragged on too slowly, the plot was obvious and the characters have been played better in the past. Expand

Robert Patterson made an alright batman but completely sucked at being Bruce Wayne. When he was Bruce Wayne it was like watching the twilight movies. I've never seen Bruce act like that all suspicious and looking like a dam criminal. Like wtf happened on this Batman it was horrible. Also like little to no action really at all. Catwoman was garbage. The penguin looked like a human almost like 2 face. And last but not least the riddler looked like the guy from my bloody valentine. Not only did they completely butcher the film but but they butchered the characters as well. I don't understand why this movie has such good ratings. It was the most boring batman I've ever seen. They should just stop making these. This is the 6th different batman actor and its getting worse. If you can't keep the same batman then just give up already. Obviously everyone hates playing batman since no one ever wants to keep playing him. Expand

The Batman

The Batman is a near three hours of delicious and dark crime noir. It is bleak and thrilling. Dealing with a Batman that's new to the mask and the vigilante life, it strays from the exploration that former iterations have delivered.

The Batman knows what it is and the direction by Matt Reeves straitly sticks to it. The Batman delivers stunning cinematography and styling, with a delicious score by Michael Giacchino.

The themes (of class, wealth, inequality and PTSD) that The Batman delves into are handled carefully.

A good story, direction, cinematography and action choreography would be nothing if the cast isn't brilliant, and the cast of The Batman is nothing short of brilliance. The broody and contemplative Batman is balanced with a flirty and sensual Catwoman, and the villain in the Riddler is malign, twisted and sinister.

The Batman is a riveting start at Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson's iteration of the titular character, and should leave audiences wanting more from this Batman.

9/10.
