Well this was a lot of boring and ridiculous pretensions nonsense. It's been a long time since Christopher Nolan made something good.

Stunning visuals.... That's the only redeeming factor of this movie. It does look amazing, with stunning cinematography and some unbelievable action sequences. Everything else though... Utter crap.
About an hour into the film I had to pause it, grab my phone, and see if perhaps my copy had some issue with the sound mix. You could barely hear what anyone was saying, and at various times I had to jump on the volume button of my remote because some scenes were incredibly loud.
Turns out my copy was fine, and the unintelligible dialogue and volume 'jumps' were a purposeful choice by the Director, and that it actually caused problems when the film was shown in the cinema!
Being unable to discern what anyone is saying ruins the film, what plot/exposition I could glean from hearing every fourth word spoken (at best) means I had no idea what was happening.
Again, it was wonderful to look at, but impossible to understand.
Another result of this, I couldn't really get an idea of how well anyone was acting. Characterisations were impossible to realise, as well as formulating any sense of motivation.

Ultimately it's a film I watched all the way through, but won't watch again (unless a cut comes out with the sound mix drastically improved!), it was just two and half hours of my life I won't be getting back!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Wow, wanted to love this movie. Loved Inception, and liked Interstellar. I love SciFi, and time bending, mind bending movies. However, this movie was a waste of time. Hard to understand accents and confusing dialog. Didn't really care about the characters or plot. Sound was horrible, dialog hard to distinguish with background noise and music. Sound mix had music way too loud. Really was ready to walk out after about 45 minutes, but kept hoping it would get better. Maybe because of overdone sound and effects, parts of it seemed a little like a cheap Japanese kung foo or godzilla movie. Final battle scene seemed to have an army throwing bombs and shooting at a non-existent enemy. They are attacking a shutdown defunct nuclear power plant. They never show the supposed enemy. Plus, one army is attacking in normal time, while troops from the same army attack in reverse time, sucking up bullets and unexploding buildings. None of this is ever very well explained. I'm so disappointed based on Christopher Nolan's previous work, this just doesn't cut it. Sorry, but what a waste of $200 million dollars. At the very least, wait for the DVD to come out. Absolutely not worth paying theater prices. It's 2 1/2 hours of your life, that you'll never get back. :((
P.S. Love sciFi, The Matrix, Source Code, Adjustment Bureau, Inception, Passengers, and many others, but this just ranks so far below any of these.

First, maybe let's turn down the music and sound please? My eardrums were being raped in some scenes of this movie thanks to horrible music editing and mixing. It's just too loud.
Next, what was the point of the first half ? I kept asking myself "what's going on? who is this?" and trying to understand the fast-paced dialogue between characters. Critics are praising the acting, I am sorry what? Acting is barely passable level, it's just bland and soulless. No emotional investment at all. Movie tries to explain time-reversing things and people and just fails at it. Bunch of characters are expositions and "you are looking for that guy/girl actually" transitions between dialogues. Compared to, let's say Interstellar or Inception, this movie is just boring and less interesting. There is less visual spectacle (apart from 2-3 scenes) and most of the time you don't understand what is going on. 2h 30 min feels like 4 hours, but ironically if it was 4 hours, probably would have had more explanations and reasons behind stuff that was happening. I saw this movie in theatre (In UK you can, with mask on). Out of 10 people on whole room, only 2 people said they liked it (I came with 5 others who I knew and asked other 4 what they thought). What a disaster.
Other than cinematography and actual non-CGI work put in to create this movie, I have nothing good to say. Really poor.

P.S: Amber Heard's acting is abysmal

An exaggerated film whose only purpose is to complicate the viewer, but I wish he could do it with cinema. These ambiguities are created only by the chaotic and crowded montage and a series of theoretical dialogues, and no cinema is seen in it. Also, we do not see any coherent story during the film and the events of the film do not form a script at all. There is no characterization in the film, the protagonist character is not made at all and is not believable, also the other characters are completely caricatured and extra, also during the film and its artificial communication, not a bit of feeling is created. Aside from the fact that the film does not even come close to form, it is also very beginner in terms of technique, excessive cuts, and sometimes weird and inappropriate! The opening and closing sequences of the film are highly artificial, and the final sequence is saturated with a large number of cuts, aerial shots and rudimentary special effects. The only slight positive aspect of the film is its acting, and the acting of the antagonist character is defensible. In general, the film is considered to be a very bad and weak film, which is like a puzzle without a pattern, meaning that after putting the white pieces together, which is not a difficult task, it has nothing to offer. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First off! This movie tries to trick you. But not due to its time inversion. But with the movies break neck pace. You may watch this abs go, why is the editing so bad? Why are characters running from one scene to another without establishing shots?
This is all intentional. Usually in stories “characters” push the plot forward. But since this movie lacks characterization. The only way Nolan can push the story forward is by speeding everything up. That’s why it seems like characters are always running and why there’s no establishing shots.

Also this film is very pretentious. It seems like Nolan made it not for a theatre viewing experience. But so that amateur film critics could snobbishly pick this film apart. And yes, the time traveling doesn’t make any sense. There’s more holes in this than Bonnie and Clyde abs their car combined. Like for instance. If the protagonist can clearly see he’s fighting himself. Than why would he try to shoot at himself? If a person is inverted why do they need a special mask with oxygen? If that’s the case gravity would be backwards the sun would be backwards if oxygen is inverted than so would everything else.

Also all the actors give great performances except for the Russian guy? Was he really Russian? I don’t know. But you can tell they weren’t given anything to work with. Also Nolan needs to go back to film school to learn what “show don’t tell” means This movie is basically 3 hours of exposition 4 fight scenes and good but obnoxious music.

I also read in a video that Nolan made the conscious choice to make some of the dialogue unintelligible. Smh if you have a movie that is 3 hours of exposition. Don’t punish the audience by making a 3rd of it inaudible. That’s like inviting someone to dinner, but making them pay for you both. Also the lack of blood really makes it hard to believe what’s going on in this movie. There doesn’t need to be buckets of gore. But realism in films like this is important. It breaks the immersion when a film is bloodless. Finally, and I covered it a bit up there

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The music video to Heinrich Maneuver or the reverse scene in Top Secret have better action, clearer exposition, and logical metaphysics. The good reviews conflate a sense of wonder at the spectacle of special effects and a plot that tries to mess with narrative flow (read: time travel) with being challenged intellectually by complex, clearly formulated philosophical problems. Tenet is riddled with incoherent plot jumps, mumbled overwrought dialogue, stupid explanations, and little real action besides a brief fight scene or blue and red tagged soldiers running around, shooting at poorly realized enemies. Tenet is truly an unmitigated mess. Worst big screen film ever. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY. There are far better time travel films out there. Expand

Nolan has leaned into and doubled down on the most frustrating aspects of his recent work: unintelligible dialogue and plot that folds under the weight of of careful thought (the reason we're rushed through it in the first place). It's annoying that Nolan has branded himself as a crusader of a lost cinematic experience. His films are no longer designed to be appreciated in an initial viewing but are to be dissected with internet research and discussion and then re-viewed multiple times in home viewing to achieve resonance. This means he's not really a champion of cinema at all, he's just created a pretentious Third Way in which the first step of this multi-media, meta method of seeing a movie takes place with the investment of time and money that go into showing up to see a movie at a theater. Why anybody would expect others to make this investment, knowing that moviegoers will be denied a complete and satisfying experience, is anybody's guess. Expand

...and me who thought Inception and Interstellar were Nolan's worst...
This is definitely worst that any of his previous films and a terrible movie overall.
Some say it tries too hard and fails. I say it does't even try ... The entire concept is incoherent, childish and even poorly executed. Even if it made some sense (WHICH IT ABSOLUTELY DOES NOT), the very fact that people claim that you need to watch it several times to get it ... is proof enough of bad storytelling.
Memento, The Prestige and Dunkirk are his only movies worth spending a dime on (...and the Dark knight to some extent...)

Christopher Nolan movies are all pseudo intellectual! He tries to be so smart and intelligent that he forgets that feelings and emotions make a good movie and when it’s smart and clever it will be a very good movie. This review would contain spoilers if I had any clue what the hell was going on. So I'll keep this short and sweet. The music is so loud you can't hear the dialogue and every other person had an accent which doesn't help when you are fighting to hear the words. 45 minutes in I turned to my son and said I had no idea what is going on and he said he had no clue either. After another hour he said let's go bc he was clueless and I said let's just start for the action. Then the climax comes and I have no clue who is shooting at who, where they are why they are even there or what they are trying to accomplish. Then after the climax I don't even know what the hell they are splitting up, what it does or why. I left as they were trying to explain what had transpired and it didn't even matter. Zero starts and if rather stick a needle in my eye then even attempt to go online to figure it out. Water off money and 2 1/2 hours of my life. I'm dumber now and out $25. Expand

YES, i know i can watch it many more times. I dont care. I dont want to watch it anymore because my first time watching it was a bad experience. this is just my personal opinion. i pay to watch a movie for entertainment. i loved Interstellar and Inception, even though they were both difficult to understand, and with those 2 movies I wanted to watch the movie more times after i watched them once. And each time I rewatched them, it was a great experience. But Tenet was just different. I think the material was just as interesting and not any more esoteric than that of Interstellar and Inception, but maybe its execution was not as good as the other two. Or maybe it's just me. My younger sister enjoyed Tenet a lot and said that she thought it was easier to understand than Interstellar. Well, its just my opinion haha. To each their own. Expand
