This movie has a great break-in scene, lots of fights, and some satisfying moments where confusing events become clear.

Unfortunately, the plot is super confusing. So much so that at points I just gave up on figuring it out and kept watching. It's also 2.5 hours long. The soundtrack is incredibly average. I think they recycled the Inception soundtrack, added a few foghorns and called it a day. David Washington's character alternates from having no idea what's going on to being ultra confident and competent, and it's jarring.

I think you'll enjoy this if you want action more than plot.

The plot is borderline incomprehensible and at some point I just had to let it entertain me, while realizing the "world" it tries to establish is scientifically nonsense. Not only that, but the characters try to explain the world with quick, snippy dialogue with barely any details, while talking way too fast...leaving the viewer completely confused. And perhaps worse of all...there is essentially 0 backstory to the main character who goes by the name..."protagonist". Why should I care about this character ? Who is he ? We have 0 answer to these questions, therefore...I do not care much about the character and found myself wanting to fast forward through most of the film as...there was no emotional connection to a single one of the characters. (Dunkirk also had the same problem, and was fatally flawed as a result.) The 2nd half does have some excellent action sequences and almost made me forget how convoluted the plot was. But the first half was brutally incoherent, and not believable, essentially mindless action, and 0 character development (of most characters in the film except only 2 side-characters)...leaves the best I can give the film about a 5/10, and also fatally flawed and alternating between frustrating for much of it and fairly entertaining for the last 30 minutes, for the spectacle of it. While the action sequences andDirector Christopher Nolan's latest blockbuster -- the film on which the movie industry has pegged its hopes for drawing viewers back into theaters -- unfortunately fails spectacularly in its appointed mission. While the action sequences and some of the special effects make for terrific eye candy, the ridiculously convoluted plot is so hard to follow that one really needs pause and rewind buttons to absorb it all. What's more, the picture's look and feel seem like they could have been taken out of an "Inception" sequel but without a comparable emotional connection. Kenneth Branagh's fine supporting performance adds some spark and life to this offering, somewhat helping to make up for the deadpan and uncharacteristically disappointing portrayal by John David Washington. Clearly this is a film enamored with its own cleverness and gimmickry, but such qualities -- no matter how expert they might be -- can never compensate for the lack of a good narrative, something desperately missing from this overlong, underwhelming effort. About the only truly positive thing I can say about "Tenet" is that it looks good on a big screen, something viewers who really want to see it should do while it's still in theaters. (Oh, and by the way, I saw this one in a movie theater -- and lived to tell about it. Get over those fears already, folks.) Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I had high expectations for this movie, but it turned out to be a big disappointment. Nolan is a highly meticulous director/writer (my favourite in fact) paying attention to the smallest details. Hence I find the many plot holes and faults in the storyline inexplicable. A few to mention: Why would Kat tell her family secrets to a complete stranger after talking with him for less than 5minutes? Why would they risk the mission to please an emotionally unstable Kats desire for vengeance. Sator would have died anyways (They only had to make sure he doesn't die before the algorithm is secured) Why are all locks and security systems so easy to breach(Oslo freeport, Stalsk-12) After being tightly surrounded by three trucks, the Estonian guards in the convoy still don't realise they are going to get ambushed. Why did the blue team had to fail preventing the explosion in the end? Blue team should have been the plan B in case Protagonist and Ives fails securing the algorithm. Why did Ives break the protocol in the end(no-one who knows the location of the algorithm can stay alive)? If Protagonist was the one who founded Tenet in the future why did he instruct Ives to kill themselves after securing the algorithm. How could he be sure that Ives gonna break the protocol? If Ives did obey the protocol and killed Protagonist, Tenet wouldn't have been founded in the future. Finally the cast:
Kat was annoying, she got too much airtime without an important role. The protagonist was bland. Sator was alright. Ives, Priya, Crosby and Mahir were good but they had small roles.
Neil was carrying the movie in my opinion.

I didn't like the start of the movie and only the 10/10 reviews on line stopped me from turning it off - maybe it gets better? The pacing was all off... Too much, too quickly.. guy hears about "inversion" and now everyone he talks to knows about it. The inversion concept was a cool idea but executed poorly... why do some parts happen backwards and others happen forwards? I can see all these reviews online 10/10 - if you don't like it you don't understand it - tripe. I am the protagonist and I can see what this movie was trying to do and it fails to deliver. If you can get past the first 45-60 minutes its easier to watch the rest. Expand

While core components of the time travel logic in this film are relatively novel and themselves interesting, this logic and foundation is completely cast aside at every point throughout the movie. I don't think I have ever watched a film that is more internally inconsistent with the in-universe rules it establishes. By all appearances the plot is held together solely by scenes brainstormed in the writing room around the idea of "cool things that could happen if time went backwards".

I can tolerate a film leaving me in the dark for a long period (even right till the very end if the plot warrants it), I also enjoys twists and concede many films improve with a second watch. However, I cannot tolerate a movie being so deliberately opaque in storytelling that at 90 minutes in the viewer still has no clue what is happening *and* never gets a decent explanation. These early acts do not instil curiosity and a desire for an answer, only frustration and confusion. This issue is only compounded by the inaudible dialogue that plagues most scenes. It's not clever storytelling to not give your audience any indication of what is going on in a story, it's contemptuous of their time, money and attention. The spectacle and novelty of the original concept are it's only saving graces. The performances are mostly underwhelming, the overall plot fairly uninspired and score passable. Your attention to detail and desire to understand the world and story will not be rewarded but mocked, if you are watching this based on trust in Nolan from his previous works he will make you regret it over an agonising two and a half hours. I do not reccomend this film.

Mr. Nolan has a well established resume of some great films but this was nonsensical. I wasn't a fan of Inception but it was fare more enjoyable. As in Inception when at various points in the film you need the actors to explain in some contrived way what is happening onscreen then something is amiss. I would run to see a Nolan directed Bond film because we would have some assurance that the Producers wouldn't allow for a complete waste of a 200 million dollar budget. First, maybe let's turn down the music and sound please? My eardrums were being raped in some scenes of this movie thanks to horrible music editing and mixing. It's just too loud.
Next, what was the point of the first half ? I kept asking myself "what's going on? who is this?" and trying to understand the fast-paced dialogue between characters. Critics are praising the acting, I am sorry what? Acting is barely passable level, it's just bland and soulless. No emotional investment at all. Movie tries to explain time-reversing things and people and just fails at it. Bunch of characters are expositions and "you are looking for that guy/girl actually" transitions between dialogues. Compared to, let's say Interstellar or Inception, this movie is just boring and less interesting. There is less visual spectacle (apart from 2-3 scenes) and most of the time you don't understand what is going on. 2h 30 min feels like 4 hours, but ironically if it was 4 hours, probably would have had more explanations and reasons behind stuff that was happening. I saw this movie in theatre (In UK you can, with mask on). Out of 10 people on whole room, only 2 people said they liked it (I came with 5 others who I knew and asked other 4 what they thought). What a disaster.
Other than cinematography and actual non-CGI work put in to create this movie, I have nothing good to say. Really poor.

While I like the general concept, it doesn't work for me. You could make a movie that's hard to follow along - if the pictures are nice, it can work. Or you could make a movie with poor cinematography and a great story - but in my opinion this film has neither of those. It is hard to follow, full of tropes. Military, machine gun, special agent, helicopter, yacht, beautiful woman, guy doing chin ups near the oilrig (that's a new one I guess) plutonium, end of tze world, nuvlear thread - no, just no. We've seen these ingredients too many times, they're boring as hell. A movie has to be satisfying because you care about the characters, you can follow the story, you are curious about how it ends - this film doesn't check any of these boxes. what the Matrix did right with bullet time, this movie completely destroys the mystical backwards effect and trow it in your face like an over the top cake. I hate to see all movies with a pinch of action turn into action specticals, like if the audience doesn't allready know it's possible. Carefully injecting these special effects and pacing is a thing of the past, none of the modern movies can compete with the action movies of the past simple because a bunch of idiots can make movies these day, same goes for the writing process.

Nolan's ideas were always special, same for Tenet. He also manages to keep the heartbeat high and stable all through the film. But we can't find what destination the film want's us to reach.
We simply can't catch up the plot, and trust me, not in a fun way. Even though the idea's brand new, the scientific theory is overwhelmed with lack of structure.
The characterization is incomplete and the audience doesn't get to know the protagonist as much as it should.
I have to admit too much car action doesn't quite fit the film.
Apart from all I said, Christopher Nolan's perfect and unique style, is becoming quite a cliché after a decade from Inception.
However, Tenet is a movie worth at least watching once, but isn't what we expected from Nolan.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Good twist on a cool espionage like movie. Not his best work mainly because it made no sense at all. The movie would like you to feel it has purpose yet it takes a very deterministic view of reality. Why invert after the missions complete? If you’re having a briefing an hour after the event and everyone isn’t dead then doesn’t that mean it succeeded? Therefore, why invert at all. If what’s going to happen happens then there’s no free will. I didn’t see the connection between Kat and the protagonist. I woulda just let her die tbh. The characters had no solid connections that made you root one way or another. Besides all the plot holes it was visually entertaining at times. However, the story will leave you wondering wtf was the point of the movie? Expand

CastCurrently hitting the movie screens with "Oppenheimer", one has to be curious about Christopher Nolan's "Tenet", which came out during a global Pandemic. Kudos for daring the big release. Cinematography is stunning, as are the locations. Cast & Crew surely had fun shooting this blockbuster. Some elements, booming massive dramatic sound, confusing timelines, fast forward and review remind of earlier work. (explicitly not Robert Zemeckis "Back to the Future") Alex von Roon had enjoyed "Memento" of sorts back in the day & met some of the brains behind it in person. Over time "Memento" has riped like a good wine. German dubbing was a bit rough with many phony accents which mad the lines partly hard to decipher. Kenneth Branagh is fun to watch as is former vampire heart-throb Robert Pattinson and the lead. Von Roon, currently on strike with SAGAFTRA, wonders, which Algorithm will compare the movies of Nolan and Michael Haneke. Expand

Is this about time travel? Or the reversal of time? Why is he wearing a mask? Is this about COVID? Why is he fighting himself? This movie is even more confusing than Inception. “

These are just some of the actual comments I heard while watching Tenet -Christopher Nolan’s latest blockbuster - a very clever, confusing and deeply frustrating film - perhaps the perfect movie for the madness and disappointment that is 2020. An expensive, very high concept testament to the clout Nolan currently carries in Hollywood right now since he’s allowed to make high brow blockbusters. Cue British accent “I know, let’s make a $250m movie and run the whole 2 and a half hours in reverse.’ The editor must be like WTF?
Nolan is a genius. Too clever me. Maybe I’ll enjoy this more on a second viewing, but is that a sign of a good movie? One that leaves the vast majority of the audience confused? Clarity of narration is key to enjoyability. Washington and Branagh’s performances are brilliant but, can we all fast forward to the future please! Roll on 2021 so we can watch the all the proper blockbusters that got deferred. (On the big screen as Nolan rightly says)

Instead you are most likely not understanding it because it is wrong or a mess of a script/edit. If time is reversed for you, then you exhale Oxygen and breath in Carbon Dixoxide. You do not need "special air". Also, driving a front wheel drive car backwards means you loose all the fine control as it is an actuated rear-wheel (front of car is pointing to the rear) drive vehicle. So weaving in and out of traffic would have you bouncing off cars half the time. Also a bullet fired in reverse does the same amount of damage, as it causes the same hole. Luckily most of the movie is spent in forwards, so it is somewhat enjoyable. Of course the whole thing breaks down when you ask why the bad guy did not know what was coming, considering he is getting messages from the future. Expand

The dialogue in Tenet is much like the positive reviews for the movie; So desperate to offer insight, and meaning, that they go on for twice as long as they should, only to find they have still said nothing worth hearing.
Unfortunately, Tenet is mostly empty dialogue, from start to finish. There's a small, interesting idea here. 'Your perspective on time is just one, of many, here, let Nolan show you more.'
It's not unlike, 'what if people could enter and alter your dream? Let Nolan show you more.'
The major difference, here, between Tenet and Inception, is that Inception was a finished script, doubtlessly re-written many times, to ensure it's both legible and fun, all the way through. Tenet has not had even a first of second pass. It has not had a good writer come along and say "Hey, Chris, why are you telling instead of showing. This is boring. Let's start again, without all the exposition that goes nowhere and try and craft a more interesting story around your central concept."
The entire movie feels like Nolan is stuck, writing page, after page, after page of exposition, to try and explain the story to an editor or producer, but they just got so bored, they turned around and said **** it, yeah, sounds great, Chris, do that, I trust you."
The result is massively bad.
Beyond bad, in fact, as it's the first unwatchable film Chris Nolan has made, which makes it disappointing, too. We can only blame ourselves. We thought he was incapable of making a bad movie, just as the studio clearly did, when they let him go ahead with such a poor screenplay.
The truth, of course, is never that complicated.
Sometimes people waffle and don't produce anything worth hearing, no matter who they are.

The movie is a pretentious, exposition heavy mess, it throws around terms like plutonium and algorithm just to seem complicated, but it's quite simple and unoriginal, John David Washington is a great actor and exudes charisma, but his character and the entire cast are undercooked in typical Nolan fashion, the female lead is a tired, boring caricature, and even the actress's performance cannot salvage the role, another underwhelming Nolan flick, though not as bad as the inception Expand

Oh what rubbish. I'm a fan of most of Nolan's work (Dunkirk is a masterpiece) but this I found to be an unsatisfying and cold movie. Firstly the pacing was all wrong with no establishment work done on the different locations, just a frenetic rush from one set-piece to another after the laboured exposition hour is out of the way! The set pieces themselves, aside from the opening one were the opposite of immersive, the biggest fault I found with the movie. They should deepen the magic of the cinema transfix-ion experience, not break the spell. The inversion gimmick felt derivative and just not as good as Nolan thinks it is - certainly not enough to hang the whole movie off of. It's a high-concept fail in this case unfortunately. Three out of Ten-et. I fear that Nolan may have peaked and is in decline. It's really about time that he called time on the theme of time, at this time. Expand

It is actually a very straightforward James Bond style action movie, but instead of one-liners and sex scenes we have a half-boiled attempt to explain entropy and time-inversion. Kenneth Branagh chews the scenery as usual, and his 'russian' accent is inconsistent and silly. Elizabeth Debicki is great, it's too bad she was written as an empty shell who only speaks in relation to her husband and son. The music is well done, if a little heavy handed especially when attempting to build tension. Tenet is 2 1/2 hours long and is crazy boring, the actual time bending fun happens at 1 1/2 hours and by that point I was so stir crazy it was underwhelming. The gimmick of it being mirrored is a fun idea that's been done better in literature and other actual sci-fi. It's all a big waste of time and is a dumb movie that poses as being smart. Expand

However it was said by the actor and director of the movie himself, Tom Wiseau, that the movie was intended to be black humor, hinting that the awkward dialogues and bad acting were put there deliberately to create confusion and was not meant to be taken seriously.

TENET felt like such a movie. But what worries me the most is that TENET was probably in fact a serious attempt at being a pretentious movie. The plot and dialogue were absolute nonsensical that it slowly became comedic, were it not that Nolan intentions probably was to make an intelligent movie, however done it so that it was deceiving and played games with the audience perception, but underestimated the intellect of the audience, meaning you cannot cover up nonsensical plotlines with confusing dialogues. Now I am all for absurd dialogues in the style of maybe like Quentin Tarantino's movies, but it needs to be executed smartly, not randomly.

Therefore as a deliberate black comedy, I would have given this movie a 9, if it was intended that way, but I think not. So I give it 3 stars and this movie might end up in the list as one of the worst films ever made next to "The Room"....

That's how bad it was in every single other way to alienate me. It's unapologetically confusing, and as usual, some people conflate that with "challenging". No, MOMENTO was challenging. This is just a mess. Tenet's plot, dialog and character motivations feel like Nolan grabbed a fistful of those poetry magnets and hurled them at the refrigerator door. Whatever stuck is what's on the screen. It's loud and bombastic. Sometimes in amazing ways and unacceptable in other ways. I don't need to go into the dialog - you've already heard the complaints - but it's as bad as you've read. Don't guess, don't try. Just turn on the subtitles if you're convinced you absolutely must see this terrible way to spend 200 million dollars.

The action scenes all suck because it looks like literally any other action movie when you press the Rewind button on your remote. This was a cute gimmick when I was 5 and playing with the VCR. How Nolan thought this cheap, B-movie "special effect" was appropriate for a film of this scale is just mind-boggling. It caused me to completely check out of most of the action scenes, especially when you consider if you can go back in time knowing exactly how the future will play out, you could mount attacks millimeters from your enemies. You could mount attacks INSIDE their bodies that will appear out of time in the right moments. So Nolan, who has a rep for science fiction which is scientifically-plausible, used a cheap gimmick which doesn't even stand up to the most basic scrutiny. The cardboard cutouts...er... characters are beautiful but empty. Like a collection of NPCs in a video game. Their dialog feels like it was written by a dollar store AI. You don't get to know the characters and you don't even feel anything about them. They're so wooden and mechanical they contribute to how this film does everything in its power to not immerse you.

I decided to just gut it out to the end, but with half an hour to go, I was thoroughly bored. At least when a dialog-heavy drama bores you to tears they'll at least lull you to sleep. Tenet simultaneously makes you crave a long nap but it's bombastic audio and explosions don't allow it. It's almost like a kind of sleep torture.

Fanboys are trying desperately to extract something transcendent and so genius that only watching it 12 times begins to reveal it. When Nolan's own fans have to mentally water torture themselves to appreciate this film, you know there's trouble.

Hopefully, the time travel mcguffin at the center of TENET will one day exist so we can all go back in time and warn our past sells to stay the hell away from this time turkey.

I found the whole exercise to be a tiresome, nonsensical slog. As a huge fan of science fiction film and literature, I'm always excited to see a new take on the genre. I'm not one of the science fiction fans who dislikes anything fantastical or not 'hard sci-fi', in fact, some of those are my favorites. This however, takes nonsense to the next level. Its certainly a unique concept, but the headiness it proports itself to have is a mirage. In reality, the story is just a vehicle for a gimmick with some cool visual tricks, and it doesn't have the requisite internal logic to suspend disbelief in the slightest. This adds up to an extremely frustrating experience, which makes sense only on the most surface of levels, and takes itself dreadfully serious. If you peel back that surface level only a bit, you find a menagerie of convoluted **** that makes no sense whatsoever. It's as if they tried to hide how nonsensical the entire concept was, by making it all extra convoluted.

There's a pointed line of dialogue aimed at audience members who realize it doesn't make a lick of sense, "Don't try to understand it. Feel it." Well, to me, this FELT like a half-baked and lazily contrived film which should have spent another few years being properly conceptualized in the writer's room.

It's an extremely boring and frustrating experience, and I expected more.

Hey gang this movie borders on the ridiculous. The acting is fine but the story is silly, incomprehensible and way way way too long! My friend and I actually turned it off after 2 hours . I liked INCEPTION but I could follow that and it made sense.

It is just too outlandish, too incredible. Accepting time-travel in reverse is just a suspension of disbelief too far for me. It seems silly, stupid, and ridiculous how easily they do it. And boring.
I must admit I am a fan of Sci-Fi, but not of Time-travel. However, that is not the whole reason I didn't like this film as I have enjoyed some time-travel movies like Deja Vu (which I re-watched recently), Edge of Tomorrow, or Memento (or even the Terminator franchise).
And, no, I didn't like Insterstellar either, but I didn't dislike it as much as this one.

An aesthetic showcase that's uninterested in human beings (and what does Christopher Nolan have against decent sound mixing?)

In Tenet, Christopher Nolan is again examining the vagaries of time, a theme that's front and centre in much of his previous work. It's undeniably fascinating to see a tent pole Hollywood production engaging with issues such as entropy, thermodynamics, reversibility and irreversibility, the grandfather paradox, and T-symmetry, but the film's main problems are more fundamental, existing almost entirely at a structural level (although some of the performances don't help, nor does the abysmal sound mixing). It looks incredible and the practical effects in the action scenes are extraordinary, but there's nothing of note under the shiny veneer. It's a film with no interest in human beings.

The plot is straightforward in outline. We follow a CIA operative known as The Protagonist (John David Washington) as he is recruited into an ultra-secret international espionage squad called Tenet. His mission is simple – at some point in the future, someone has figured out how to reverse the entropy of objects, effectively being able to send them back along the timeline without having to reverse time itself. The implications of this are catastrophic and have set humanity on course for World War III, unless The Protagonist can figure out who is doing it and put a stop to their machinations.

Tenet is an event movie in every way; this 150-minute, $200m+ original idea is a massive studio tent pole written and directed by the most popular filmmaker alive. And I will say this, the budget is on the screen. No small amount of that money, of course, went on the practical effects (incredibly, there are only 280 VFX shots) – whether it be bungee-jumping onto the side of a building, a close-quarters fight where one of the combatants moves in reverse, a Boeing 747 jet crashing into a building, a highway chase where some of the cars are going forward in time and others are going backwards, or an all-out battle scene where, again, some of the soldiers travel forward whilst others move in reverse.

Along the same lines, the cinematography by Hoyte van Hoytema is stunning, as he mixes 15-perf 70mm IMAX film with traditional 70mm stock and a few 35mm sequences in a manner where the shifts in aspect ratio are barely noticeable. It's the kind of film that could only exist in the medium of cinema – no other artform could even begin to approximate its aesthetic design and splendour. A celluloid purist, Nolan has always made a big stink about the artistic importance of cinema, and Tenet finds him pushing the aesthetic boundaries of what the artform can accomplish.

Unfortunately, no matter how visually unique or aesthetically impressive it may be, no amount of gloss can hide the fact that the screenplay suffers from some fundamental problems – most notably, it's bereft of emotion and populated with cardboard cut-outs that are supposed to be characters. The Protagonist isn't a person with an interiority; he's a cypher, the audience's surrogate so that Nolan can explain the plot to us. He's emotionless, void of relatable motivation, has no psychological through-line, and nothing even resembling a character arc. As for Kenneth Branagh as Russian oligarch Andrei Sator, he might be the most cliched Russian villain ever put on screen. He isn't a person – he's a collection of near-satirical tics, clichés, and elements from other, better films.

As Kat, Sator's trophy wife, Elizabeth Debicki fairs better, but her role is still poorly written. A common criticism of Nolan's filmography is that his female characters tend to be victims. I'm not saying that Nolan is obliged to write more rounded female characters. Much like Michael Mann, Nolan's films are androcentric. And there's nothing wrong with that. However, in Mann, there are strong female characters with considerable agency, whereas in Tenet, Kat is nothing more than a pawn who's defined almost entirely in terms of her role as a self-sacrificing mother.

At one point early in the film, The Protagonist is told "don't try to understand it, just feel it", which is advice that Nolan is also offering to his audience. The problem is that there's nothing to feel. Unlike Memento (which remains Nolan's best by a long way), which packed a seriously emotional gut-punch when we learn what's at the heart of the puzzle, Tenet offers us nothing more than the task of deciphering it for its own sake. There's no payoff, nothing to make us want to penetrate a story uninterested in depicting real people or real emotional stakes. More enamoured by the complexity of its own design than by any of the people contained within, it's an emotional void – all technical virtuosity and surface sheen with nothing at its core.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie barely makes an effort to explain the massive quantities of incoherences and potential plot holes by smothering key explanation scenes with metaphors and perplexing dialogues. The dialogues are in fact extremely unrealistic and almost "shakespearean" at times. Even after watching it multiple times and reading variois explanations, it is still full of plot holes and nonsense. I really think nolan exagerated this time Expand

(((This is probably the dumbest movie I seen in a long time!))) I actually like some of Nolan's movies, but this one is terrible. This movies premise is fine, and under the right direction would have been as good as Inception. However, Nolan(((This is probably the dumbest movie I seen in a long time!))) I actually like some of Nolan's movies, but this one is terrible. This movies premise is fine, and under the right direction would have been as good as Inception. However, Nolan directed this movie like he was on Speed! That's a fact. A lot of fast pass incoherent scenes I will definitely have to see again just to understand that the movie really is incoherent not me. Whew!!! And I thought I was on a bad trip, nope its just Nolan. What I liked: 1. Hard concepts being thrown at the audience like they know what's going on. Call me a snob but I am up for a challenge. I don't appreciate easy dumbed down material. Besides we are in an internet age, people should be willing to look these things up. Its not like it wouldn't take more than ten seconds. Just saying! 2. It is a well acted movie despite the dumb dialog, and objectional ways characters plod on with minute character development. What I don't like: 1. Over the top convoluted plot with many working parts, but no payoff. I think if the action, events and storyline was simplified we would have had a better understanding of what was going on. To go here and there for a McGuffin was rather stupid, or to chase McGuffin to meet a character did not work for me. Seems like busy work. 2. Characters appear cold because we don't know them or care for them. The only character that seemed fleshed out was the billionaires wife (I don't remember her name proven my point). If Nolan did the same for others it would have been more tolerable a movie. Nolan does not give his main character a name, but a title. Not a good idea, its smug! 3. Motivations and plot holes that make no sense. There is a lot of them and makes this movie seem messy and chaotic. There is a scene where I don't understand why character are at this place that they are suppose to be. It's just writing into story so characters can have temporal encounters and have a cool looking scene. Its like the editor needed to cut the scene but kept it in movie. 4. Fowards/ backwards running, walking, or battling was cringe! In other words it like rewinding a movie while having other characters fight the tide. Stupid! The the whole movie is this. Here is my solution one group stays in current universe, one goes into another past universe only during temporal disturbances do they see each other, interact, or objects get moved or disappear. Yeah, it would have been a lot of ghosting going on, but it would have been fun. I think Interstellar had scenes like that, and did the storyline collapse, no! 6. Exposition men! Nolan does this alot! Characters that are there to explain stories are lame. But characters that are there to explain concepts and story at warp speed, are....still lame. Imagine someone came off the street and explained Einstein's Theory of relativity in two minutes then expected you to write a paper on it. That is the way this movie feels. And no, I do understand this movie, that's the problem 6. The dialog is unrealistic, no one talks like they do, there is a lot of cliché dialog, might I add some of it was very cringe for an cerebral movie like this. It takes you out of the movie. 7. This movie is very task oriented so much so it brings to mind Olympic relay racing one runner passes off the torch to the next and so on. There is Mcguffin finding, finding people to do the next task, and convincing people to let the main characters tag along. So minor character get introduced to only to run the race. And most of the dialog is around that. Again not really a movie more like Iron Man or a trilithon. I am sure that Cristopher Nolan had a masterpiece in his head but he got caught up in the complex churning monster that is this plot. I would probably recommend renting this movie. Expand

If only I knew why, I probably would've saved a couple bucks and my time. About halfway into the movie I realize that I literally have no idea what is going on. I turn to my friends, and it seems that they are completely lost as well. We ended up walking out about halfway through the movie. This feels like one of those pretentious artsy movie people make when they realize they could sell people anything. With enough big names, people will watch anything and pretend it's a masterpiece. I feel like most of the high ratings come from people being told that this is a good movie, and that they are complete idiots if they don't understand it. I give it one point for being very easy to make fun of with my friends, as well as one point for reverse car, the only enjoyable thing in the actual movie. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. 2 hours of exposition won’t save this movie from being so obviously “pretend smart”. Unlike interstellar, it throws around terms like “entropy”, “inversion” and “algorithm” in very nonsensical ways. The scientific definition of all these terms is much more interesting than what the movie does with them. For example, the “algorithm” is a 9 piece lego set invented by the future’s Oppenheimer (who since we are in 2020, must be female) who is only alluded to in one dialogue scene to establish her gender. That’s it, nothing else is built on her character. The villain is this fat, drunk, wife beating, eastern block oligarch (who knew we could still have stereotypes in 2020) who wants to end the world by assembling this lego set. Yes the plot is that stupid. However, up until the 1:30 hour mark the sheer charisma of the main character keeps you interested, however that falls apart exactly during the 1:45 mark when the main character starts fighting himself, one of them is masked so the other one doesn’t know he’s fighting himself, and THE VERSION WHO KNOWS IS FIGHTING HIMSELF STARTS SHOOTING AT HIMSELF. This is so damn stupid. Such a waste of potential. Expand

Quantum science allows assumptions on how time flow could be manipulated in a future reality. But this is completely fictional. Time flow in this movie is how the writers/Nolan needed it to be to create a complicated, mystical and multi-layered plot and its fictional world. The problem here is that this is the only reason for playing with the audience's state of expectations and understanding. Just like with any plot armor, this makes me feel frustrated and I can't relate to any of the motivations, background, and characters. Unlike Oblivion with its dream world, which was scientifically reasonable and also relatable to anyone who knows the nature of dreams, this movie doesn't have what makes an Aha moment. Good scenery and cinematics don't make a good story. Unnecessary complication and mystification doesn't make a good story. Expand

There's no character growth and no mystery to anyone whatsoever. Nolan has obviously focused too much on the complexity of the story instead of character development.

Not even worth watching really because you have to sit there paying attention and thinking the entire time, and get no rest mentally. This isn't entertainment, this is information overload. Inception's story was the best balance between action, drama, and complexity. Interstellar was second as it had lots more action and less drama, and this would be in last place out of all his movies - even lower than Dunkirk.

But what if you add to that some ridiculous pretentious two-way time flow (which is meaningless at its conception from the start), worthless dialogues full of "it's from a past future" and phrases which making a high-schooler proud since he knows them. The whole conception of time here is about a way to film action scenes originally not for scenario itself. This movie is on par with World Invasion: Battle Los Angeles for example but simply added meaningless abundant time manipulation scenes. Overhyped simpletons will call such a movie a masterpiece for smart people but no one from them could explain anything from a movie which lacks scenario or sense at least. Groundhog day was better in terms of time manipulation. Expand
