Creative idea, nice characters, interesting plot. Unfortunately world breaks initially set rules from time to time mostly for the sake of impressive picture or action.

A fantastic idea, arranged into a logical story. It made you feel like all of this could really happen. Unfortunately, because of tight action flow, the characters do not show much emotion, and that made them less human.

For that reason all the amazing choreography and stunts felt like they were happening in the distance, because I just wasn't invested in the characters, much less the main character. Expand

After being delayed multiple times due to the COVID-19 pandemic and theatres are slowly started reopening for business especially in the overseas, Tenet finally made it to the big screen.

After being captured by Russian mercenaries during an undercover operation in Kiev, the unnamed CIA operative only known as “Protagonist” (Washington) is rescue and recruit by a mysterious organisation called Tenet. The organisation’s mission is to ensure the survival of human race where the protagonist learn that there is an existence of a weapon that can wipe out the past.

The protagonist works with his handler and another member of Tenet, Neil (Pattinson), to track down an Indian arms dealer, Priya. She has made dealings with a Russian oligarch, Andrei Sator (played by Kenneth Branagh), who can apparently communicate with the future. To track him down, the protagonist approach Sator’s estranged wife, Kat (Debicki), for her help to stop him.

Just like any other Christopher Nolan’s movies, Tenet is simply amazing and masterpiece. This movie is so unique in a whole new different level especially this movie deals the flow of time, which is the main plot device. The concept of using the flow of time is very utilised something which have never done in any other movies.

The visual effects are very well done especially whenever the characters moving backward through time. The aeroplane crash into the hangar is very realistic and to make it even better, it’s actually real and not using any visual effects. Nolan managed to make it into a spectacular scene which I considered it to be a signature and most memorable scene in this movie. The action scenes are very awesome as well.

The performance of the casts is great especially John David Washington and Robert Pattinson. Both of them have a great chemistry working together in the movie. While Washington is great but Pattinson is awesome in the movie but thankfully, he never overshadows Washington’s main role. I think Pattinson’s acting in this movie proves that he has moved on from his iconic role from Twilight series and he is capable of playing any roles. It’s no wonder that Matt Reeves chose to cast Pattinson as Batman and I’m confident that he will be great as Batman after watching The Batman’s DC FanDome Teaser.

Be advised, though. The movie’s plot is going to be confusing since this movie deals with the flow of time. You will find out yourself hard to keep up with the story including myself. If you have watch 2010’s Inception which is directed by Nolan, then you will know I mean. Having said that, you are going to need to watch Tenet at least two to three times to understand the story just like Inception.

Despite the confusing plot, Tenet is very much enjoyable movie to watch in the year of 2020. Definitely a movie that I recommend to watch.

Yes, it is a spy espionage movie and borrows a lot of element from the previous movies of the like. However, the use of "Inversion" really adds a layer on top of this movie and makes it feel like no other movie has. This "inversion" is best seen in the action sequences which result in some visually stunning spectacles. On that note, the action sequences are phenomenal from the car chase to the plane crash and my favourite being the fight scene between the protagonist and an inversion soldier. It's even more impressive when you realise that most of these action scenes are practical and not CGI which benefits the movie by not taking the audience out of it and keeping as glued to what's going on.

Unfortunately, legendary composer Hans Zimmer does not return for Tenet and is instead replaced by Ludwig Göransson of Black Panther and Mandalorian fame. Despite that, Ludwig gives an impressive electronic score that elevates every scene and is deafening in a good way. If you didn't know Hans Zimmer was not scoring this movie and watched it, you still probably would think Hans Zimmer was still scoring it. The story is also intriguing enough to keep the audience engaged. It is simple with the agents having to prevent the "Russian" bad guy from dooming the world! However, the inclusion of inversion does add an extra element to the plot and makes the audience think about the movie. Even after it was finished, I was still thinking about the movie. The inversion adds an element of unpredictability to the movie and starts to change the way the movie operates. However, this inversion doesn't take focus until halfway through the movie. For the first hour, it is just a spy espionage movie with a lot of exposition and setup but the second half goes into high gear and is when it gets really good.

The actors are for the most part give really good performances. Special mention to Elizabeth Debicki as "Kat" who gives an emotive performance of a woman who is practically in a domestically abusive relationship. John David Washington as "The Protagonist" (yes seriously...) has the suave and coolness from an agent spy, Robert Pattinson as "Neil" gives a lot of charm and wit to his performance and Kenneth Branagh as "Andrei Sator" is frightening in his performance as the villain. One major flaw about the movie, in my opinion, is the characterisation. You can already see this when the main character's name is never mentioned whatsoever in the movie. Apart from Kat (Elizabeth Debicki ) and Neill (Robert Pattinson), to a certain extent, are very bland and one dimensional. The protagonist (John David Washington) is the "good guy" and doesn't have anything else from that. We don't know his backstory, his feelings or even his real name for that matter. The character doesn't even have that big of a reaction to the inversion thing either and can feel rather robotic. Andrei Sator (Kenneth Branagh) suffers from a similar aspect to the protagonist is an over the top Russian bad guy and wants to end the world and wants to control his wife. There are some other supporting characters introduced in the movie and sadly they also are lacking in depth. The only emotive aspect in this movie is the abusive relationship between Kat and Andrei Sator. However, apart from that the movie very lacking in a lot of humanity and emotional moments.

The second major flaw is the sound mixing in this movie. The voices of the actors are just so muffled or rather low sometimes which makes it hard to hear what they are saying. This gets even more difficult when the characters are wearing a mask or have incredibly strong accents like Kenneth's Russian accent. Occasionally, the loud music score is really loud during conversations between characters. This is quite detrimental to the movie as every dialogue is really important to understanding the movie and not being able to hear it because of weird sound mixing is not great.

A minor flaw is the "inversion" explanation. It is still quite confusing to understand and while it is explained in the movie to a certain extent, it can still leave you rather confused and dumbfounded. It isn't a major problem as it gives a rough idea of the concept and in the end, this rough understanding is all that's needed to enjoy the movie. Just like a character says in the movie "Don't try to understand it, Feel it". Although, that is kind of a blatant reason for the director to not explain everything...

Overall, the movie was a blast to watch. It is a bit weaker compared to Nolan's previous movies but is still stunning to watch. It is a grandly entertaining movie that is an absolute spectacle. I highly recommend considering watching it in a theatre as this movie is best experienced there in all its glory.

Disclaimer: It gets better with a second viewing.

My initial reaction to Tenet was to give it a 7/10, but on a second viewing I bumped it up to an 8/10. It's not Nolan's best work, but it's not his worst either - I'd rank it as probably his 6th best.

The visuals are amazing and the action is the best Nolan has ever directed. The music fits the scenes well and although not Hans Zimmer is still compelling and powerful. The idea behind the film is - as usual with Nolan - very intriguing and original. But why I refrain from giving this a perfect rating (keep in mind an 8/10 is quite good) is this is not his best written film. The exposition for the first hour or so of the film is rough. It's not entirely clear why what's happening is happening and I wish either it had been cut from the film and streamlined or had been given extra time to fully develop (which was unlikely to happen as convincing a studio to go longer than 2 1/2 hours is nearly impossible, even for Nolan) The characters are also not fleshed out well and the acting is only mediocre, although Kenneth Branagh stands out as the best.

Altogether, a very entertaining film. Imaginative, expansive, and uniquely Nolan. But for a director of such magnitude and reputation, it may disappoint some viewers. 8/10 is hardly a bad film and is in fact a very, very good one. But when perfection is expected, very good can be a letdown sometimes. Is that our fault for having such high expectations? Or Nolan's for having raised the bar so high in the past? Regardless, the second viewing is a superior experience for both understanding the plot and for having reset expectations.

Tenet is a movie that made me buy a movie ticket.
In times of endlessly rehashed movie concepts, live action remakes (what even is the point of that?), the milking of brands to their breaking point, this movie is a breath of fresh air. It combines the concept of inverting objects or even yourself with gorgeous action scenes, the fact that almost none of the characters have actual names didn't even occur to me when the credits rolled. It's not as good as other movies by Christopher Nolan, like Interstellar (my favourite movie of all time), or Inception, but in modern mainstream cinema it's something fresh, I really recommend you to go to the cinema to watch it.

Perhaps this was Christopher Nolan's most ambitious film to date with a fantastic soundtrack (which, by the way, was way too loud for us to really enjoy it) and different timelines that eventually came together. The biggest downside to this film is simply that it is (almost) impossible to understand when you see the film for the first time or ‘just once’. Still, this film really left me thinking about the plot for days. In comparison; Inception was fun and difficult in a good way. Tenet takes it it a step further and rubs against the edge where the difficulty of the plot almost gets in the way of the fun and enjoyment. Expand

At first I was blown away by the sound, with a great system it rattles through the whole place (that would have been really great in the cinema). When it came to the sound, I thought to myself "Wait a minute, that sounds familiar, somehow like Mandalorian" ... after the film, I took a quick look and you read Ludwig Göransson, great.

I liked the cinematic representation of the film very much, it all looks really strong and offers impressive images. Acting is also absolutely delivered here.

Regarding the actual story, I'll just say that I basically liked it, but didn't pull up any trees. It was very exciting in most parts (the intro is really blatant) and tied you to the chair. But every now and then I had the feeling that the film was languishing for a few minutes. Over time, the whole topic was "complex" networked, but I missed the "WTF moments" a bit, but there were nice brackets.

Overall, absolutely to be recommended, preferably with a good system. 8/10 inversions.

The movie itself and its premise can be quite confusing which leaves open a lot of opportunity for rewatches and although it definitely has issues I got really involved with the characters and their story and overall really enjoyed the movie. The Special/Practical effects are incredible as expected from a Nolan Film. The normal vs inverted fight sequences are something so creative and well done which I don't believe I would have ever seen if it wasn't for Nolan's creative mind. The acting is also really strong here with John David Washington doing a hell of a job and Robert Pattinson being the real MVP for me surprisingly. In conclusion, aside from it having a lot of exposition dumps a pretty confusing premise and plot (at points) and a not really interesting villain who's main motivations are the good ol' "if I can't have it either can you" it's a pretty good movie that is bound to get you entertained for a couple of hours and even after watching it as you try to properly understand the laws of this world and etc. Expand

The setpieces are always visually stunning and the concepts are designed to be baffling. They're not something that lend themselves well to visual explanation but now I see them more like David Lynch movies - almost dream like. And when i watch the movies with this feeling - like we are not supposed to wholly understand, then you can just enjoy them for the silly dialogue that is designed to be baffling and nonsensical and just engage with the mish mashy spectacle of the whole mess. Then they are fun and enjoyable. If you take it too seriously and analytically, which, granted you might feel like you are supposed to, then it's a massive disappointment. If you enjoy it like a mission impossible thriller then it's a fun ride and visually stunning.

there will always be a place in my heart for the prestige and memento though and dunkirk was solid. they hold up on many different levels. tenet can be enjoyable if you keep your analytical and logical brain in check and just enjoy on a visceral level. kinda like a brainy fast and furious lol.

These interesting ideas are expressed through dialogue that is hushed, spoken in unintelligible accents, or riddled with terms with which most viewers are probably unfamiliar. If the dialogue were more audible and discernible or if mysterious jargon were not so consistently thrown around, viewers would derive more enjoyment out of this film. The concepts discussed and on display in the film are quite interesting and exciting, but the potential for a more fully realized moviegoing experience is wasted by impenetrable dialogue that is muttered by the actors, leaving most of the audience scratching their heads. These last few days since the reviews of this film began to circulate, there was something that stood out in many of the reviews from professional critics.
And that is that apparently because of the situation we're currently living in, Tenet became overnight the film that was going to save cinema.

That in my opinion added an unfair burden on the film and unfortunately became a dark cloud that now hangs over it.

Now if in addition to that, we add the weight that the name of Christopher Nolan involves, it goes without saying that Tenet raised expectations that it was going to be unable to satisfy, unless it was an epic masterpiece and Tenet is far from that.

It's funny that after such a huge film as Interstellar, Nolan decided to go to smaller scale with Dunkirk, which was clearly his most sober film since The Prestige, but now going back to present a huge show, I feel that Nolan, perhaps, for the first time in his career, exceeded his ambitions.

Tenet by its very nature is a complicated film. It's not a film that will break your head as a lot of the press has led the public to believe, but it is a complicated film.
But more than anything it feels like a film that gets complicated gratuitously.

I must explain clearly that this is due to its own concept, and the concept is great but what in Inception felt organic, even though it was complex, here it feels like an introduction that never succeeds.
And it's that when you need to explain so much, the emotion that gets paused, it also gets diluted.

And on the action side, I can't deny that Nolan knows his business. You only need to see the scene with which the film opens, because is simply spectacular.
In that aspect I cannot complain and that action it's one of the reasons why this film grows.

Tenet is perhaps the best mainstream film to come out this year, yes I know, we don't have many film in that regard but I mention this because that doesn't make it special in any way.

The problems, from the excessive duration, to the cartoon villain, undermine many of its aptitudes and is that ultimately, the key problem with Tenet is not that it's not going to meet the expectations of the audience, but is that cannot live up to its own concept.
I mean, even Hans Zimmer's absence is notable.

Christopher Nolan delivers an entertaining huge and ambitious film that is also, distant, cold, pretentious and self-indulgent.

His fans will defend him tooth and nail and his detractors will hate it without hesitation, but the last word will be entirely yours.

I enjoyed it but I wasn't impressed. But understand that at no point, not even with the insistence of Nolan and the studio to release it in theaters, that Tenet wasn't going, nor did it have to save the movie theater experience.
That's up to us, the moviegoers.

Tenet has a pretty straightforward premise: A super agent called Protagonist has to stop an evil mastermind to begin World War III, it is kind of a 007 movie. What is not straightforward is everything in between.

The movie presents us with a reversing time mechanic which it's a pretty neat idea, it also is not as hard to grasp, but it is shown and explained so many times in different and convoluted ways that it ends up being confusing. At first, it's introduced as something you can do with "reversed" items, but after that, it appears that they forgot this, and then it is more like you need a machine to get in that state. The reversing rules feel like they are ever bending, and here lies the main problem with this film: it is always on shaky ground. As aforementioned, Nolan does dense movies that anyone can watch and enjoy, but this comes with the problem of when is too much exposition? When it's better to let go of your audiences a little? It's obvious that he didn't trust the audience would get the reversing thing so he ended over-explaining it and ultimately that decision backfired. It doesn't help that most of this exposition it's given to us in the most basic forms: characters explaining it to other characters while walking or eating at a table, this happens many times throughout the movie to the point of it becoming repetitive device. It is worth noting that a lot of dialogue it's eaten by loud sounds and noise from the background, this can become an annoyance since it is easy to lose track of the plot with these auditive obstacles, some people are theorizing about this high noise being intentional, and that might be true as it's unlikely for a director so invested in sound would let this slide up, still it's bothersome and if that's true it is a terrible gimmick to add re-watch value to the movie.

The rhythm of the film can be off, but it is never dull or boring, even with the things mentioned before. As an action movie, it is great on its action scenes since they get pretty creative with the reversing, the only bad thing about them is the final set-piece. It's an incredibly choreographed scene with lots of stakes and dynamism, yet, it is stained by these double simultaneous fights where another character is doing something more uninteresting with allegedly higher stakes, but at the same time, they felt lower.

Most of the cast is pretty solid, and the characters are likable. John David Washington as Protagonist and Robert Pattinson as Niel are pretty good, they are charisma walking machines, however, the one performance that I liked the most it's from Elizabeth Debicki, her character is the only one with a more definite arc, and it also displays a wide range of emotions through the movie, I can see how this character could not work with another actor, but Debicki fleshed her up extremely well. On the other hand, the antagonist played by Kenneth Branagh didn't work for me, he is a great actor, yet the decisions made surrounding his character are way too cartoony for his good.

Tenet is an unnecessarily convoluted movie filled with exposition dialogue but fun action scenes. As with other Nolan movies, this one has a rewatching value, I can see how someone would pass over a second glance, but to me, I could have a second view because as flawed as it is, it's entertaining from the start to finish.

All the practical effects here are amazing. Especially the plane sequence and the war sequence. I’m genuinely impressed and curious about how he was able to do some of this stuff since the movie deals with time inversion. There’s a lot of stuff going forwards and backwards in a scene and I really want to know how Nolan did it. The cinematography is fantastic as always and the score is great. Hans Zimmer is missed here but I think Ludwig Göransson did an excellent job doing his own thing while also throwing in elements of Zimmer in there too. The editing can feel a little bit awkward at points but it’s good for the most part and the sound editing is great. The only issue in the technical category I have is the sound mixing. Unfortunately, Nolan decides to turn the mixing up a little too loud during important scenes and it can be hard to hear what some of the actors are saying. Speaking of actors, almost everyone here does a great job with John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, and Elizabeth Debicki being standouts. There isn’t a lot of depth to their characters which can mute some of the emotional weight at points but it wasn’t a huge issue for me. The plot is unique and different but definitely is incredibly confusing and will most likely require rewatches to fully comprehend it. If you are a fan of Christopher Nolan or want to see something in theaters, I urge you to check this out. Expand

Towards the end of the filmNolan continues to challenge our established notions of cinema, especially of linear storytelling and cause effect. Watching Tenet is like peeling an onion from the outside inwards, and from the inside outwards. Towards the end of the film you have some notion of meeting in the middle, but you know many viewings are needed to connect the roots and branches of this complex tree. As a visual storyteller Nolan continues to deliver, his set pieces and action sequences are adequate, though some moments seemed repeated from previous outings especially Dark Knight. Some vistas seemed like fillers lifted from random Bond films. The underlying technology of inversion was not adequately explained to a science buff like me, and seemed somewhat glossed over for convenience. The communication between present protagonists and future masters could also benefit from additional expansion. The abusive marriage in the center of the plot seemed a distraction and not conducive to the conclusion. The movie is a challenge to watch in trying to keep diametrically opposite timelines unified in the mind. There are several aha moments when you get the satisfaction of realizing or predicting what just happened, but long stretches of head scratching in between. Definitely cerebral cinema for formidable minds. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The thing about Tenet is if you’re obsessive about understanding it, you’re not going to have a good time. Tenet is a good time. It’s an exhilarating watch full of masterly crafted action sequences and beautiful bouts of cinematography. The characters are great and entertaining— except for the women characters, but what more can we expect from Nolan— and the acting is stellar. However, it doesn’t make sense. It constantly just doesn’t make sense. The sound mixing in some places makes the dialogue impossible to hear or understand. However, you must get this principal fact: the only way to build suspense in your audience when you’re making a time travel movie where the events you see unfold you’ve already seen happen is to completely and utterly confuse your audience. And Tenet does that! I do not enjoy it, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy the movie. Ray Bradbury basically revolutionized the science fiction genre by saying that realism isn’t a prerequisite for good science fiction. Before that, everyone wanted to know how fantastical futuristic machines would work down to the exact descriptions of everything and anything. Literally, before Ray Bradbury came into the scene half of science fiction wasn’t even fiction— there was no story. It was mostly just people describing cool things that could be a thing in the future. You have to suspend your disbelief to enjoy the movie. It’s like when you go to a magic show— you know its not real, but it doesn’t make it any less enjoyable. Tenet does make sense enough for you to be amazed by the twists and turns of the plot unfolding as you’ve seen it fold before, but enough to be dissatisfying to critics. Nolan does a great job at making a horribly confusing and out there concept— like time travel, and this theory that has been thought of in quantum mechanics for a while— as real as you can. But there’s just a principal problem in all time travel stories is that they’re walking paradoxes. If you think too hard, your brain will start to hurt. It’s one of those movies that you have to watch a video on afterwards to understand. But it doesn’t make it less enjoyable— take Primer for example, a science fiction movie about time travel that is regarded as possibly the best time travel plot of all time. This is Primer but if Primer had a Hollywood budget and wasn’t a Sundance film. Like a character says at the beginning of the movie, “don’t try to understand it”. You shouldn’t understand it. You should enjoy it! That’s what movies are there to do. Finally, Robert Pattinson is in it, so you know it’s going to be a great movie nonetheless. Did I mention some stellar acting? Because its there. I wish Nolan knew how to write female characters, though. The only girl in the entire movie is a damsel in distress type with the biggest “I’ll do anything for my children” cliche in the entire movie. Yet, it still fits into the movie thematically— one of the biggest pulls of the movie that show up time and time again is the individual vs the group. What’s one person’s life if you want to save the world? This movie does a wonderful job at exploring that, especially with Neil and the Protagonists relationship. Man, C. Nolan can’t write women, but where he can’t write woman unintentionally gay subtext always follows. Every scene in this movie is entertaining, and a deliriously confusing ride. It’s not on the same level as The Dark Knight or Memento, but that in no way shape or form makes it a bad movie. It’s kind of on the same level as Interstellar or Inception in my eyes. I went into the movie hyped, and left the movie hyped. I wasn’t disappointed, but it didn’t exceed my expectations either. But my expectations were high, and they were definitely fulfilled. I wanted good things and I got them. This is just all to say that Tenet is a good enjoyable film but not without its faults that comes with Nolan’s filmmaking time and time again. I recommend you watch it! Expand

That I must say, is something amazing work. The best thing about Tenet, is Ludwig Göransson's amazing score. That is just some goosebump music at its best.

Of things I dislike, of course I dislike that I think the story is too complex at first, but that doesn't mean it is bad. But one thing I found annoying was the quick cuts. In about 5 minutes The Protagonist went from Norway to India to the UK just without any real development in the story, but just for the sake of the locations been present multiple times. It is like the cuts were randomized.
Also there wasn't much development about the characters. The antagonist Sator is everything a "normal" villain is, with a agenda like every other villain. That is fine, but it is nothing that haven't been seen before.

So a good "visual effects" movie with a complex story, that deserves a second watch to figure out the story, and then my score might be higher.

I risked COVID for you and Christopher Nolan's Tenet. It was nice to be back in a theater with a huge screen and a comfy recliner for the communal experience. We were socially distanced, a light crowd, masked up and sanitized as best as possible. While the theater-going experience went as well as can be expected in these times, I doubt that I'll take another chance like that in a while. On that note, was Tenet worth the risk - keep reading for my thoughts.

There has been so much hype about Tenet. It is supposed to be the first mega-blockbuster post-COVID-19 to hit the movie theaters. It's supposed to be outsized, action-y and the kind of spectacle that can only truly be appreciated on the big screen. Christopher Nolan has the clout based on The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception and even prestige pics like The Prestige and Dunkirk. There's an up-and-coming cast including Blackkklansman star, John David Washington, Elizabeth Debicki, who was great in Widows, Golden Globe winner, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and everyone's favorite vampire, Robert Pattinson. All of the elements are there for what should prove to be a top notch night at the movies.

So, I am not going to give a synopsis of the plot because 1.) I don't want to spoil anything and 2.) I didn't understand what was going on. There is literally a line early in the film from a character played by Clemence Poesy (her only scene) where she's explaining the crux of the conceit of the movie to John David Washington's character and she says, "Don't try to understand it." What?!?!? Which basically means that if you get lost in the plot of this movie, just give up and go with it. I couldn't exactly do that because the script gets bogged down with still trying to explain and explain and explain the how and what of what is going on. It gets boring and frustrating at times. Even some of the acting is bad because of the stilted, overly explain-y dialogue.

On a side note: complicated movies are fine. In fact, Christopher Nolan has written and directed some excellent complicated movies. Inception and Memento are great examples. What those films did very well that Tenet fails to do is make a complex concept simple to understand in their cinematic universes. Nolan didn't make that happen here.

In the plus column for Tenet, the film will be one of the most stylish movies you'll see this year. The action sequences add just that jolt of energy this exposition-heavy film needs. Where big spectacle is needed, the film delivers. While there is a moment where the film reveals itself, it is still completely inscrutable even if it is exciting; so, you can enjoy it on a pure action, conceptual level but forget trying to find any deeper understanding from the film itself.

The ambition of Tenet is admirable. The craft of the work is top notch. The script is a confusing, stilted dud, which makes the actors struggle and no real connection is able to be made to any characters. Is Tenet worth seeing in a theater? If you see Tenet, you have to see it twice or maybe more times. In a pre-COVID-19 world, I'd say the spectacle alone is worth a ticket to the theater with a big box of popcorn. BUT in these pandemic times of September 2020, it is more worth shelling out some VOD money, split amongst a group of you friends, when Tenet is available on streaming, so you can pause and rewind to understand what it's all about. Then, come to the comments and explain it to me, please! And then pass that handful of popcorn, please.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Christopher Nolan has done movies explaining concepts of space (Interstellar), dreams (Inception) and society (The Dark Knight Trilogy). This time he made a movie on time. Although I like the fact that he made a movie about time travellers which is nothing like what we would have done if we were given a chance, it wasn't done properly. A lot of people who are writing praises for this movie are accusing the critics of not being able to understand the concept of the movie. It's not that people don't understand the concept; sometimes the rules of the universe are established and then they themselves are not being followed.

Think about it. If suppose someone is being shot. So they get hit with the bullet and then they bleed. Simple, right? Now think of this in reverse. They will have to stop bleeding and then the bullet will pass through them. But in this movie they bleed AFTER the bullet passes through them, as though their blood is being affected by the reverse bullet. It would have made sense if this was said at some point but it isn't. I'm giving the example of the gunfire because that's about half the scenes in this movie. The car chase scenes, however, were done absolutely correctly. The sailing of the ships, the explosions, the part where The Protagonist meets himself, everything was done in absolute perfection.

There were many times when the movie brought up things that were never talked about later. The movie began with a scene about an anti-terror squad to show the protagonist. But this was never brought up ever again. They said they need to have committed an act for the positive entropy to work, but most of the times they don't do those acts, especially in the fight scenes or the ending when Kat shoots Sator. Neil is said to have come from the future, but he doesn't act in reverse the way other people from the future do.

Filmmaking should always follow the rule of "show, don't tell", which this movie had to continuously violate because of how complicated it was. This is a movie that was too complex even for Christopher Nolan, such that even the ordinary audience can easily pinpoint the mistakes. He bit a lot bigger than he could chew. Let's hope the next time he makes a movie that is complex to look at but easy to grip over like how Inception or The Dark Knight were.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Tenet is a lesser epic but with far more potential than other bigger works.

The acting in Nolan films are not always the best, I don't know if it's the casting choices or the fact the storylines, cinematography leave the actors behind. It's not that he uses bad actors, it's just In my opinion you can never truly relate to the characters. However, Tenet fools you into thinking this is the case again, but then makes a splash with some top acting from John David Washington and Elizabeth Debicki.

Unlike many Nolan films(an example Dunkirk) the emotion is cold, almost unimportant but in Tenet you do start to root for any chance of romance and that becomes are driver throughout the film. Quite rare.

The film does genuinely feel less epic, most of the shots are in close quarters and if they're not, it's at sea or on a wasteland. You can see this similarly in inception, but that does manage to have large scape epic scenes mixed in.

You do start towards the end realise again, through subtle (at the time, pointless) shots that you are meant to be looking at this film in a certain way, but don't quite get in until it unravels and bang! it hits you... Damn, Nolan got me again.

Those moments are great in Nolan films when you collectively start nodding in the cinema when you all piece it together.

Overall a good Nolan film... Good clothing, cars and bling, not so much scenery and atmosphere.

Only real sticking point - the Score.

I do think this movie is kind of overhated. I love Christopher Nolan. He is an awesome director. I do think the storyline should've been more cohesive. I agree with the sound mixing. That is a valid point. I am a Christopher Nolan guy.

Tenet Review

I was always a fan of Christopher Nolan and Tenet does not disappoint at all. It is an interesting movie, but it is a little undercooked and served undone. The main problem with this movie is that the premise involves a serious level of intellectual brain power to comprehend, second by second, as the director intends, but it is executed sloppily in general. The narrative devolves into clear funding issues in production, a lack of evolving and branching narrative arches and storylines, diversions into time, expanding and branching in and out of time, inverting every possible frame of the movie somehow relative to the narrative.

This movie was an interesting “prototype” concept for a movie that could have been a lot better honestly.

It’s a 7/10 from me.

Not Nolan in his best shape, its a bit too long, the sound is all over the place, and the plot is kind of a mess, but still a compelling piece of film with a great concept and incredible production design.

I loved Inception, Interstellar, The Dark Knight, Dunkirk, etc. but this one has serious problems. The acting is good, but the dialogues are hard to follow, at least after a single viewing. Character development is minimal, we never even learn the name of the main character and that's quite a hindrance to any sort of emotional investment.

Any movie that tries to explain time-travel in a pseudo-scientific way is going to irk me. Everything is pointless, there is no free will, everything already happened so everybody can just do whatever the frack they want, regardless of any consequences to anybody else, because that's what was supposed to happen anyway. Apocalypse, here we come! The oxygen, really? How did they came up with that inverted lungs crap? Absolute rubbish for a plot, not a good plan.

Some of the action scenes are worth watching, but all in all I really didn't enjoy this movie as much as I had hoped.

Hoo boy. I'm not sure how to review the latest Nolan brain-twister. Maybe in reverse? Well here goes...

The opening was thrilling - major vibes from the opening scene of "The Dark Knight." But it went sideways (or multiple-ways) from there.

I went in knowing this was mind-bending. That it would take multiple viewings to make sense of it. But it was beyond confusing. It was unintelligible.

At some point, I was so confused (watching things/people go backward through time while things/people go forward in time will do that to you), I pulled up a scene-by-scene recap on my phone. And even that didn't help.

Great acting: Check.

Awesome cinematography: Check.

Pulsating soundtrack: Check.

Do you ever watch a 2.5 hour James Bond movie and wonder "Where in the world are they now? Which massive death-defying air/sea/land chase are we watching now?"

That's essentially what this is ... a confusing epic Bond movie with a "reverse-time" brain teaser thrown in.

Expect to read/watch a recap or two afterwards) to try and make sense of it (trust me - it won't help).

John David Washington and Robert Pattinson are fine but Kenneth Branagh chews up the scenery - so much ham. Elizabeth Debicki is miscast - too cool by far. And what is Christopher Nolan’s fetish for having characters in masks talking so you can’t work out what they’re saying? Surely Bane was enough of that. Some of the action set-pieces are spectacular but they are undercut by an endless number of scenes where the main characters try to explain what the whole “back from the future” concept is. The fact that Nolan has to do this over and over again showed to me that even he didn’t quite know what the heck was going on by the end. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Very much a Nolan film. Spent the extra money and saw in in IMAX. Beautifully filmed - as is expected with any Nolan picture, and well acted. The story for me was actually somewhat predictable (not too difficult once you watch a bunch of his films and get into the groove of his style). Not that that is bad; if you liked Inception and Intersteller, chances are you'll like this too.

So why the low grade of only a 6? If I was WB and gave up 205 million for this to be made, and then screened the film and noticed that literally half the dialog was muddled to obscurity, I'd demand he either remix it, or return some money. I had the same complaint with Interstellar (although only in certain parts of the film when the droning sound overloaded any intelligent levels for dialog comprehension). It wasn't the physical theaters fault (Interstellar was at the Chinese Theater in Hollywood, and everyone around me had the same reaction). It's as if it's almost a tactic; "maybe if people don't understand the dialog they will see it multiple times so they can finally get it". I've seriously heard better dialog audio in student films. I would be embarrassed to put my name on this film if I were on the sound mixing team.

So there you have it. Without good audio, it doesn't matter how many millions you spend on something.

Finally, last point is, the character development was two-dimensional and flat. I actually cared more about Branagh's character than all the others (and he's the villain). The female lead came off very one-note as a "generic mother role". Her response to "the world (could) end..." is "oh, my son!". Really? Anyway, it was a ride indeed, and not the worst film out there, but the film never lived up to the extended trailer that I saw what seems like an eternity ago.

Despite it's stellar effects and mind bending timeline, Tenet has no soul. The whole time I found myself wondering 'why should I care about what these characters do'. In Nolan's best film (in my opinion) 'Inception', we get to know the characters and their flaws. Getting to know why Leo does what he does, and his being haunted by things in the past is what makes us relate to him. In Tenet there is no back story. No motive for the 'Protagonist' to do what he does. There's a great performance by Robert Pattinson, which is probably the acting highlight of the film. I can't give the film a bad review, as it was entertaining, but I also can't give it a stellar review either as it was lifeless. It would seem almost as if Nolan came up with the idea of the special effects first, and then haphazardly built a hollow story around it, as the vessel to carry this intriguing piece of eye candy. All in all, that's what Tenet is. Eye candy. It's good eye candy, but falls flatter than a sheet of paper when it comes to heart. I'd easily give this an 8 instead of a 6 if there was even an iota of reason to care about why the characters do what they do. Still worth the watch for FX alone though. Expand

Worst crime - it’s actually boring and completely lacking anything that can be emotionally engaged with. The protagonist is literally just that - a vehicle to push the narrative along... or should I say exposition. There are only a few bright spots of energy is this movie - but regretfully, they are hamstrung by the framework he set - simultaneously pulling their dramatic punches, and at the same time turning into its own meme. This is one of those movies (like Us) which deserves a really cool 15 minute student film... but unfortunately was funded for a feature length (and in the case of Tenet - grossly over-funded).

The central ‘tenet’ of the movie actually fundamentally doesn’t make sense - even internally. Once you realise it’s all fluff, and no substance, the curtain of Nolan’s deceit is pulled back to leave only an underwhelming self-indulgence that has an almost complete lack of humanity. No one actually acts / reacts like a real person... something that was desperately needed in this wholly unrealistic and ungrounded film-school SciFi concept piece.

Unfortunately, far from Nolan's best.

Christopher Nolan has always been known for making stylish films, innovating in their respective genres. The Dark Knight Trilogy, Dunkirk and Inception are proof of that. But those films were never style over substance, and this is a balance that Tenet comes close to breaking.

Let's address the elephant in the room: Tenet's central "gimmick", which is reversing the flow of time. These sequences are certainly visually stunning, but ultimately bring surprisingly little to the table. Reversing tried-and-tested action clichés sounds interesting, but in practice, the sequences rarely manage to rise above merely serviceable.

Even worse is the narrative. While I won't pick apart every twist and "timeline" here, the plot of Tenet is extremely convoluted, to the extent that a majority of audiences won't be able to follow what is going on. There are endless "gotcha" moments, most of which feel unearned due to the breakneck speed and wayward direction of the plot.

Even worse, these "twists" - the centrepieces of the entire film, fail to carry any emotional weight whatsoever. Having a storyless, nameless "protagonist" may win style points, but it also robs the viewer of any emotional connection at all. At key moments in Tenet, I found myself bored out of my mind, rather than on the edge of my seat, as I simply did not care for ANY of the characters introduced. Ultimately, Tenet has some fairly imaginative (though still underwhelming) action scenes, strongish performances and the signature sleek cinematography of Nolan. But beyond that, it's the same action movie you've seen countless times before, with smoke and mirrors to trick you into thinking you're watching something more. Nolan can do so much better than Tenet, and it feels like he was on autopilot for the whole affair. Next time, more efforts needs to go into the story and characters, rather than just the premise and technical details.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The action sequences are incredible, no doubt. Robert Pattinson is proved to be a phenomenon. However, the plot is not acceptable. First and foremost, if it's happening in the future, why on earth nothing is high-tech? Secondly, Inception was about a guy's dream, Interstellar was about the galaxy, and NASA stuff, a father and a daughter. Memento was about a guy's short memory. spoiler alert! Tenet, on the other hand, is about the entire world which is gonna be screwed. And there is this woman, Kat, who is only worried about her son and jeopardizes a worldwide mission based on her selfish emotion! Things can be inverted in time! OK! But the movie is about a woman being blackmailed by her husband and told to be free if avoids seeing her son. SHE CANNOT. All I am trying to say is that if we are supposed to see some fast-paced action sci-fi about world war 3 or a drama about a mother, her insane chosen husband, and her schoolboy? No way I can't ignore the weaknesses of a movie about the entire world's destiny. By the way, what's wrong with casting? the only actor I loved was Robert Pattinson who showed that even without any outrageous character, his performance keeps us watching. Neither could I identify with the protagonist, hope for his best, have his best interest in my heart, nor with the villain, nor with the contemporary fellows, nor the future, nor Kat. if every single of them perished, fine by me. Nolan made a mistake about timing. not in the movie but in reality. we wouldn't be scared if people from the future came to end our world. 2020? let them ruin the entire world. The movie is somewhere between 7 and 8 because of the notion, sexy visuals, music but somewhere between 5 and 6 due to Kat's stupidity and motivation, John David Washington's not being a good choice for leading actor, the plot holes, and some useless roles. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The novelty of the film wears off when you realize how tedious it is to be understood .

What they did was make a film that was complicated to understand but lacked depth . It makes the audience uninterested knowing that their first watch of the movie is the beginning of many more watches .

I can see how that appeals to people . A mystery to unravel . But there comes a point where the film starts to become anticlimactic .

Towards the end of the film , how the villan is killed is by stalling time by rubbing lotion on his back , also taking numerous showers to make the floor slippery and shooting him . Then proceeding to slide him off with the help of the lotion and slippery wet floor .

This film is the equivalent of art pieces that are suppose to have 'meaning' but instead is just a way to showboat the forced complexity of it .

Christopher Nolan tries to disrupt the linear creative way of making movies by creating complicating stories . The problem is that the stories often lack depth once understood .
You will see this in Dunkirk and Inception . The concept and idea start of good but it descends into what lacks depth . This movie tries hard to set itself apart from other movies . It does it well being unique and original thus explaining the mixed score as no doubt it deserves respect for the creativity . But the film also doesn't respect the viewer's time . You are expected to watch it more than once to truly understand it . You are viewing it for 2 hours + and it is expected that you watch it again via cinema or other ways . The thing is that some people may enjoy that but not everyone does .

The lack of depth in the overcomplicating story of Tenet doesn't justify understanding the story .

Is this worth your time ? That is up to you to decide . I'm sure some may have wished that could have inversed to 2 hours ago after finishing watch this film .

*Too Long Didn't Read* (TLDR) : Film concept and idea is amazing but not a film for everyone.
