Unfortunately, far from Nolan's best.

Christopher Nolan has always been known for making stylish films, innovating in their respective genres. The Dark Knight Trilogy, Dunkirk and Inception are proof of that. But those films were never style over substance, and this is a balance that Tenet comes close to breaking.

Let's address the elephant in the room: Tenet's central "gimmick", which is reversing the flow of time. These sequences are certainly visually stunning, but ultimately bring surprisingly little to the table. Reversing tried-and-tested action clichés sounds interesting, but in practice, the sequences rarely manage to rise above merely serviceable.

Even worse is the narrative. While I won't pick apart every twist and "timeline" here, the plot of Tenet is extremely convoluted, to the extent that a majority of audiences won't be able to follow what is going on. There are endless "gotcha" moments, most of which feel unearned due to the breakneck speed and wayward direction of the plot.

Even worse, these "twists" - the centrepieces of the entire film, fail to carry any emotional weight whatsoever. Having a storyless, nameless "protagonist" may win style points, but it also robs the viewer of any emotional connection at all. At key moments in Tenet, I found myself bored out of my mind, rather than on the edge of my seat, as I simply did not care for ANY of the characters introduced. Ultimately, Tenet has some fairly imaginative (though still underwhelming) action scenes, strongish performances and the signature sleek cinematography of Nolan. But beyond that, it's the same action movie you've seen countless times before, with smoke and mirrors to trick you into thinking you're watching something more. Nolan can do so much better than Tenet, and it feels like he was on autopilot for the whole affair. Next time, more efforts needs to go into the story and characters, rather than just the premise and technical details.

While the action sequences andDirector Christopher Nolan's latest blockbuster -- the film on which the movie industry has pegged its hopes for drawing viewers back into theaters -- unfortunately fails spectacularly in its appointed mission. While the action sequences and some of the special effects make for terrific eye candy, the ridiculously convoluted plot is so hard to follow that one really needs pause and rewind buttons to absorb it all. What's more, the picture's look and feel seem like they could have been taken out of an "Inception" sequel but without a comparable emotional connection. Kenneth Branagh's fine supporting performance adds some spark and life to this offering, somewhat helping to make up for the deadpan and uncharacteristically disappointing portrayal by John David Washington. Clearly this is a film enamored with its own cleverness and gimmickry, but such qualities -- no matter how expert they might be -- can never compensate for the lack of a good narrative, something desperately missing from this overlong, underwhelming effort. About the only truly positive thing I can say about "Tenet" is that it looks good on a big screen, something viewers who really want to see it should do while it's still in theaters. (Oh, and by the way, I saw this one in a movie theater -- and lived to tell about it. Get over those fears already, folks.) Expand

Right off the bat you are plunged into a scene where all kinds of confusing things happen, the dialogue is hidden behind the loud sound effects and soundtrack. And when they did speak, they muffled and mumbled their lines. I found the action sequences good, but that's all I'm afraid. I'm sure there is more depth to this film but not for me, I was frustrated at not being able to follow what the hell they were saying, and when they did speak clearly, it just didn't seem realistic in the setting. Besides that, there are so many things to try and understand, it just messes with your head. Don't waste your money, wait for the film on Netflix and watch it with subtitles, the cinematic experience ruins the dialogue. Expand

First, maybe let's turn down the music and sound please? My eardrums were being raped in some scenes of this movie thanks to horrible music editing and mixing. It's just too loud.
Next, what was the point of the first half ? I kept asking myself "what's going on? who is this?" and trying to understand the fast-paced dialogue between characters. Critics are praising the acting, I am sorry what? Acting is barely passable level, it's just bland and soulless. No emotional investment at all. Movie tries to explain time-reversing things and people and just fails at it. Bunch of characters are expositions and "you are looking for that guy/girl actually" transitions between dialogues. Compared to, let's say Interstellar or Inception, this movie is just boring and less interesting. There is less visual spectacle (apart from 2-3 scenes) and most of the time you don't understand what is going on. 2h 30 min feels like 4 hours, but ironically if it was 4 hours, probably would have had more explanations and reasons behind stuff that was happening. I saw this movie in theatre (In UK you can, with mask on). Out of 10 people on whole room, only 2 people said they liked it (I came with 5 others who I knew and asked other 4 what they thought). What a disaster.
Other than cinematography and actual non-CGI work put in to create this movie, I have nothing good to say. Really poor.

While I like the general concept, it doesn't work for me. You could make a movie that's hard to follow along - if the pictures are nice, it can work. Or you could make a movie with poor cinematography and a great story - but in my opinion this film has neither of those. It is hard to follow, full of tropes. Military, machine gun, special agent, helicopter, yacht, beautiful woman, guy doing chin ups near the oilrig (that's a new one I guess) plutonium, end of tze world, nuvlear thread - no, just no. We've seen these ingredients too many times, they're boring as hell. A movie has to be satisfying because you care about the characters, you can follow the story, you are curious about how it ends - this film doesn't check any of these boxes. Would rate it lower but I know that many modern movies are even worse, so 4/10 Expand

I loved Inception, Interstellar, The Dark Knight, Dunkirk, etc. but this one has serious problems. The acting is good, but the dialogues are hard to follow, at least after a single viewing. Character development is minimal, we never even learn the name of the main character and that's quite a hindrance to any sort of emotional investment.

Any movie that tries to explain time-travel in a pseudo-scientific way is going to irk me. Everything is pointless, there is no free will, everything already happened so everybody can just do whatever the frack they want, regardless of any consequences to anybody else, because that's what was supposed to happen anyway. Apocalypse, here we come! The oxygen, really? How did they came up with that inverted lungs crap? Absolute rubbish for a plot, not a good plan.

Some of the action scenes are worth watching, but all in all I really didn't enjoy this movie as much as I had hoped.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Very much a Nolan film. Spent the extra money and saw in in IMAX. Beautifully filmed - as is expected with any Nolan picture, and well acted. The story for me was actually somewhat predictable (not too difficult once you watch a bunch of his films and get into the groove of his style). Not that that is bad; if you liked Inception and Intersteller, chances are you'll like this too.

So why the low grade of only a 6? If I was WB and gave up 205 million for this to be made, and then screened the film and noticed that literally half the dialog was muddled to obscurity, I'd demand he either remix it, or return some money. I had the same complaint with Interstellar (although only in certain parts of the film when the droning sound overloaded any intelligent levels for dialog comprehension). It wasn't the physical theaters fault (Interstellar was at the Chinese Theater in Hollywood, and everyone around me had the same reaction). It's as if it's almost a tactic; "maybe if people don't understand the dialog they will see it multiple times so they can finally get it". I've seriously heard better dialog audio in student films. I would be embarrassed to put my name on this film if I were on the sound mixing team.

So there you have it. Without good audio, it doesn't matter how many millions you spend on something.

Finally, last point is, the character development was two-dimensional and flat. I actually cared more about Branagh's character than all the others (and he's the villain). The female lead came off very one-note as a "generic mother role". Her response to "the world (could) end..." is "oh, my son!". Really? Anyway, it was a ride indeed, and not the worst film out there, but the film never lived up to the extended trailer that I saw what seems like an eternity ago.

Mr. Nolan has a well established resume of some great films but this was nonsensical. I wasn't a fan of Inception but it was fare more enjoyable. As in Inception when at various points in the film you need the actors to explain in some contrived way what is happening onscreen then something is amiss. I would run to see a Nolan directed Bond film because we would have some assurance that the Producers wouldn't allow for a complete waste of a 200 million dollar budget. Hoo boy. I'm not sure how to review the latest Nolan brain-twister. Maybe in reverse? Well here goes...

The opening was thrilling - major vibes from the opening scene of "The Dark Knight." But it went sideways (or multiple-ways) from there.

I went in knowing this was mind-bending. That it would take multiple viewings to make sense of it. But it was beyond confusing. It was unintelligible.

At some point, I was so confused (watching things/people go backward through time while things/people go forward in time will do that to you), I pulled up a scene-by-scene recap on my phone. And even that didn't help.

Great acting: Check.

Awesome cinematography: Check.

Pulsating soundtrack: Check.

Do you ever watch a 2.5 hour James Bond movie and wonder "Where in the world are they now? Which massive death-defying air/sea/land chase are we watching now?"

That's essentially what this is ... a confusing epic Bond movie with a "reverse-time" brain teaser thrown in.

Expect to read/watch a recap or two afterwards) to try and make sense of it (trust me - it won't help).

Nolan's ideas were always special, same for Tenet. He also manages to keep the heartbeat high and stable all through the film. But we can't find what destination the film want's us to reach.
We simply can't catch up the plot, and trust me, not in a fun way. Even though the idea's brand new, the scientific theory is overwhelmed with lack of structure.
The characterization is incomplete and the audience doesn't get to know the protagonist as much as it should.
I have to admit too much car action doesn't quite fit the film.
Apart from all I said, Christopher Nolan's perfect and unique style, is becoming quite a cliché after a decade from Inception.
However, Tenet is a movie worth at least watching once, but isn't what we expected from Nolan.

While core components of the time travel logic in this film are relatively novel and themselves interesting, this logic and foundation is completely cast aside at every point throughout the movie. I don't think I have ever watched a film that is more internally inconsistent with the in-universe rules it establishes. By all appearances the plot is held together solely by scenes brainstormed in the writing room around the idea of "cool things that could happen if time went backwards".

I can tolerate a film leaving me in the dark for a long period (even right till the very end if the plot warrants it), I also enjoys twists and concede many films improve with a second watch. However, I cannot tolerate a movie being so deliberately opaque in storytelling that at 90 minutes in the viewer still has no clue what is happening *and* never gets a decent explanation. These early acts do not instil curiosity and a desire for an answer, only frustration and confusion. This issue is only compounded by the inaudible dialogue that plagues most scenes. It's not clever storytelling to not give your audience any indication of what is going on in a story, it's contemptuous of their time, money and attention. The spectacle and novelty of the original concept are it's only saving graces. The performances are mostly underwhelming, the overall plot fairly uninspired and score passable. Your attention to detail and desire to understand the world and story will not be rewarded but mocked, if you are watching this based on trust in Nolan from his previous works he will make you regret it over an agonising two and a half hours. I do not reccomend this film.

The plot is borderline incomprehensible and at some point I just had to let it entertain me, while realizing the "world" it tries to establish is scientifically nonsense. Not only that, but the characters try to explain the world with quick, snippy dialogue with barely any details, while talking way too fast...leaving the viewer completely confused. And perhaps worse of all...there is essentially 0 backstory to the main character who goes by the name..."protagonist". Why should I care about this character ? Who is he ? We have 0 answer to these questions, therefore...I do not care much about the character and found myself wanting to fast forward through most of the film as...there was no emotional connection to a single one of the characters. (Dunkirk also had the same problem, and was fatally flawed as a result.) The 2nd half does have some excellent action sequences and almost made me forget how convoluted the plot was. But the first half was brutally incoherent, and not believable, essentially mindless action, and 0 character development (of most characters in the film except only 2 side-characters)...leaves the best I can give the film about a 5/10, and also fatally flawed and alternating between frustrating for much of it and fairly entertaining for the last 30 minutes, for the spectacle of it. It is spectacular to look at but the plot circles back on itself so often that by the end it simply makes no sense. John David Washington and Robert Pattinson are fine but Kenneth Branagh chews up the scenery - so much ham. Elizabeth Debicki is miscast - too cool by far. And what is Christopher Nolan’s fetish for having characters in masks talking so you can’t work out what they’re saying? Surely Bane was enough of that. Some of the action set-pieces are spectacular but they are undercut by an endless number of scenes where the main characters try to explain what the whole “back from the future” concept is. The fact that Nolan has to do this over and over again showed to me that even he didn’t quite know what the heck was going on by the end. Expand

Despite it's stellar effects and mind bending timeline, Tenet has no soul. The whole time I found myself wondering 'why should I care about what these characters do'. In Nolan's best film (in my opinion) 'Inception', we get to know the characters and their flaws. Getting to know why Leo does what he does, and his being haunted by things in the past is what makes us relate to him. In Tenet there is no back story. No motive for the 'Protagonist' to do what he does. There's a great performance by Robert Pattinson, which is probably the acting highlight of the film. I can't give the film a bad review, as it was entertaining, but I also can't give it a stellar review either as it was lifeless. It would seem almost as if Nolan came up with the idea of the special effects first, and then haphazardly built a hollow story around it, as the vessel to carry this intriguing piece of eye candy. All in all, that's what Tenet is. Eye candy. It's good eye candy, but falls flatter than a sheet of paper when it comes to heart. I'd easily give this an 8 instead of a 6 if there was even an iota of reason to care about why the characters do what they do. Still worth the watch for FX alone though. Expand

Worst crime - it’s actually boring and completely lacking anything that can be emotionally engaged with. The protagonist is literally just that - a vehicle to push the narrative along... or should I say exposition. There are only a few bright spots of energy is this movie - but regretfully, they are hamstrung by the framework he set - simultaneously pulling their dramatic punches, and at the same time turning into its own meme. This is one of those movies (like Us) which deserves a really cool 15 minute student film... but unfortunately was funded for a feature length (and in the case of Tenet - grossly over-funded).

The central ‘tenet’ of the movie actually fundamentally doesn’t make sense - even internally. Once you realise it’s all fluff, and no substance, the curtain of Nolan’s deceit is pulled back to leave only an underwhelming self-indulgence that has an almost complete lack of humanity. No one actually acts / reacts like a real person... something that was desperately needed in this wholly unrealistic and ungrounded film-school SciFi concept piece.

what the Matrix did right with bullet time, this movie completely destroys the mystical backwards effect and trow it in your face like an over the top cake. I hate to see all movies with a pinch of action turn into action specticals, like if the audience doesn't allready know it's possible. Carefully injecting these special effects and pacing is a thing of the past, none of the modern movies can compete with the action movies of the past simple because a bunch of idiots can make movies these day, same goes for the writing process.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Good twist on a cool espionage like movie. Not his best work mainly because it made no sense at all. The movie would like you to feel it has purpose yet it takes a very deterministic view of reality. Why invert after the missions complete? If you’re having a briefing an hour after the event and everyone isn’t dead then doesn’t that mean it succeeded? Therefore, why invert at all. If what’s going to happen happens then there’s no free will. I didn’t see the connection between Kat and the protagonist. I woulda just let her die tbh. The characters had no solid connections that made you root one way or another. Besides all the plot holes it was visually entertaining at times. However, the story will leave you wondering wtf was the point of the movie? Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I had high expectations for this movie, but it turned out to be a big disappointment. Nolan is a highly meticulous director/writer (my favourite in fact) paying attention to the smallest details. Hence I find the many plot holes and faults in the storyline inexplicable. A few to mention: Why would Kat tell her family secrets to a complete stranger after talking with him for less than 5minutes? Why would they risk the mission to please an emotionally unstable Kats desire for vengeance. Sator would have died anyways (They only had to make sure he doesn't die before the algorithm is secured) Why are all locks and security systems so easy to breach(Oslo freeport, Stalsk-12) After being tightly surrounded by three trucks, the Estonian guards in the convoy still don't realise they are going to get ambushed. Why did the blue team had to fail preventing the explosion in the end? Blue team should have been the plan B in case Protagonist and Ives fails securing the algorithm. Why did Ives break the protocol in the end(no-one who knows the location of the algorithm can stay alive)? If Protagonist was the one who founded Tenet in the future why did he instruct Ives to kill themselves after securing the algorithm. How could he be sure that Ives gonna break the protocol? If Ives did obey the protocol and killed Protagonist, Tenet wouldn't have been founded in the future. Finally the cast:
Kat was annoying, she got too much airtime without an important role. The protagonist was bland. Sator was alright. Ives, Priya, Crosby and Mahir were good but they had small roles.
Neil was carrying the movie in my opinion.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The action sequences are incredible, no doubt. Robert Pattinson is proved to be a phenomenon. However, the plot is not acceptable. First and foremost, if it's happening in the future, why on earth nothing is high-tech? Secondly, Inception was about a guy's dream, Interstellar was about the galaxy, and NASA stuff, a father and a daughter. Memento was about a guy's short memory. spoiler alert! Tenet, on the other hand, is about the entire world which is gonna be screwed. And there is this woman, Kat, who is only worried about her son and jeopardizes a worldwide mission based on her selfish emotion! Things can be inverted in time! OK! But the movie is about a woman being blackmailed by her husband and told to be free if avoids seeing her son. SHE CANNOT. All I am trying to say is that if we are supposed to see some fast-paced action sci-fi about world war 3 or a drama about a mother, her insane chosen husband, and her schoolboy? No way I can't ignore the weaknesses of a movie about the entire world's destiny. By the way, what's wrong with casting? the only actor I loved was Robert Pattinson who showed that even without any outrageous character, his performance keeps us watching. Neither could I identify with the protagonist, hope for his best, have his best interest in my heart, nor with the villain, nor with the contemporary fellows, nor the future, nor Kat. if every single of them perished, fine by me. Nolan made a mistake about timing. not in the movie but in reality. we wouldn't be scared if people from the future came to end our world. 2020? let them ruin the entire world. The movie is somewhere between 7 and 8 because of the notion, sexy visuals, music but somewhere between 5 and 6 due to Kat's stupidity and motivation, John David Washington's not being a good choice for leading actor, the plot holes, and some useless roles. Too much, too quickly.. guy hears about "inversion" and now everyone he talks to knows about it. The inversion concept was a cool idea but executed poorly... why do some parts happen backwards and others happen forwards? I can see all these reviews online 10/10 - if you don't like it you don't understand it - tripe. I am the protagonist and I can see what this movie was trying to do and it fails to deliver. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The novelty of the film wears off when you realize how tedious it is to be understood .

What they did was make a film that was complicated to understand but lacked depth . It makes the audience uninterested knowing that their first watch of the movie is the beginning of many more watches .

I can see how that appeals to people . A mystery to unravel . But there comes a point where the film starts to become anticlimactic .

Towards the end of the film , how the villan is killed is by stalling time by rubbing lotion on his back , also taking numerous showers to make the floor slippery and shooting him . Then proceeding to slide him off with the help of the lotion and slippery wet floor .

This film is the equivalent of art pieces that are suppose to have 'meaning' but instead is just a way to showboat the forced complexity of it .

Christopher Nolan tries to disrupt the linear creative way of making movies by creating complicating stories . The problem is that the stories often lack depth once understood .
You will see this in Dunkirk and Inception . The concept and idea start of good but it descends into what lacks depth . This movie tries hard to set itself apart from other movies . It does it well being unique and original thus explaining the mixed score as no doubt it deserves respect for the creativity . But the film also doesn't respect the viewer's time . You are expected to watch it more than once to truly understand it . You are viewing it for 2 hours + and it is expected that you watch it again via cinema or other ways . The thing is that some people may enjoy that but not everyone does .

The lack of depth in the overcomplicating story of Tenet doesn't justify understanding the story .

Is this worth your time ? That is up to you to decide . I'm sure some may have wished that could have inversed to 2 hours ago after finishing watch this film .

*Too Long Didn't Read* (TLDR) : Film concept and idea is amazing but not a film for everyone.

This movie has a great break-in scene, lots of fights, and some satisfying moments where confusing events become clear.

Unfortunately, the plot is super confusing. So much so that at points I just gave up on figuring it out and kept watching. It's also 2.5 hours long. The soundtrack is incredibly average. I think they recycled the Inception soundtrack, added a few foghorns and called it a day. David Washington's character alternates from having no idea what's going on to being ultra confident and competent, and it's jarring.

I think you'll enjoy this if you want action more than plot.

CastCurrently hitting the movie screens with "Oppenheimer", one has to be curious about Christopher Nolan's "Tenet", which came out during a global Pandemic. Kudos for daring the big release. Cinematography is stunning, as are the locations. Cast & Crew surely had fun shooting this blockbuster. Some elements, booming massive dramatic sound, confusing timelines, fast forward and review remind of earlier work. (explicitly not Robert Zemeckis "Back to the Future") Alex von Roon had enjoyed "Memento" of sorts back in the day & met some of the brains behind it in person. Over time "Memento" has riped like a good wine. German dubbing was a bit rough with many phony accents which mad the lines partly hard to decipher. Kenneth Branagh is fun to watch as is former vampire heart-throb Robert Pattinson and the lead. Von Roon, currently on strike with SAGAFTRA, wonders, which Algorithm will compare the movies of Nolan and Michael Haneke. Expand
