This is a Nolan-esque masterpiece...If you miss a second of it though ...You won't understand it. It is a complex spy thriller in the vein of James Bond. A must-watch film.

When watching a movie about time travel you know that everything won’t make sense right away. If you keep that in mind this movie will send you on a ride. Seeing one scene thinking it makes no sense to seeing the movie continue and reuse the scene from a different POV with an explanation is great. At some points it raised questions like who is fighting who or who is going in what direction in time but that just gives the movie rewatching value. All in all this movie was great and I wish there was a sequel or in this case a prequel. #LongLiveSwaggy Expand

I totally mean it , Nolan has crafted a masterpiece which is meant to be viewed on the largest screen possible . I know this review is late and people with the brain of 9 year old will of course not understand this "Masterpiece". The plot in a nutshell is all about Time travel , an idea we all are very familiar with . It's the screenplay that comes up on top (It does have a minor exposition problem) and that protagonist's fight at the airport is just wow wow wow wow !!!!! . The cinematography , dialogues , direction and acting is top notch , it forcefully asks the viewer to watch it again and every time you watch it you notice something new . For those of you who don't understand it let me rephrase a quote from BVS "People hate what they don't like understand" . For me the best of Nolan , no doubts! Expand

It is an exciting action-thriller that tries hard to define itself as a smart science-fiction time puzzle. It is a really imaginative spy movie that asks you to believe in a universe with laws of physics of its own. It is Nolan at its most self, however, from a first-viewing experience, Nolan seems to underperform. As usual with Nolan's style of storytelling, Tenet is bold in what it expects from its audience, which might not help it with those who won't be convinced to watch it again. It is sometimes too fast and too complex to follow for those who only watch it once, though their eyes will be delighted by an ultra-fast paced story driven by spectacular action set-pieces, fights, and chases. On second-viewing however, you not only enjoy those things again and more so, but you appreciate certain things that at first you weren't able to detect or digest, such as character development so nuanced that is all the more delectable on second-viewing. Personally, I do like a puzzling narrative, but I normally don't appreciate a mandatory second viewing. With Tenet though, the 2nd-viewing experience was very gratifying, building up in a considerable amount in a number of ways.

In the end, Tenet is a masterful technical exercise in filmmaking that is welcomed at perhaps one of the quietest times in cinema's history. It is truly sad that a pandemic won't allow Tenet to fulfill its destiny as a blockbuster in its loudest sense.

Far and away Nolan's most complicated film to date, "Tenet's" plot initially unfurls in a manner you'd expect from a typical Nolan film. Don't even think about sleeping on the second half, though, for when the reversals, twists and complications start coming into play, you'll find your own consciousness moving forwards, backwards, longways and sideways through time in order to catch up with all the ways the rules can change in this thing. Big, bold and begging for repeat viewings, "Tenet" ultimately doesn't rank that high on my all-time list of favorites from the filmmaker in question, but when one is dealing with oeuvre of someone like Christopher Nolan, I guess a statement like that doesn't hold nearly as much weight as it usually does. Indeed, "Tenet" is still great in most of the ways that count. Expand

-
In this tragic moment, the entertainment industry is innovating solutions at an alarming pace to keep the tons of money that keep it floating. A shameful reality of an essential art. In the middle of the storm is Nolan, hugging “Tenet” as a big hope for cinema.
The first highlight is the music. The first collaboration between Nolan and Ludwig Goransson creates an aura that superbly complements the narrative speed and tension. A beautiful work by Goransson. The festival of visual effects and the complexity of the concept will captivate the public in different forms. This is not his best visual work, but there is a sense of bravery and intellect in the mechanics of the whole film. I appreciated this as much as the strong bond between the visual and the narrative. Nolan explores a conception of time and space sufficiently complex to assimilate, and that is appreciated the strong coherence between the image of space and the narrative time. The authenticity, freshness, and complexity of the script might compromise the public, especially due to the speed at which the events happens, but I take it as a mental ability exercise that, with attention and a critical mind, the resolutions will stimulate the concentrated ones. About the acting, there is not much drama. But the tension that is accomplished is adequate and derives from the interaction between the delusion of greatness of Kenneth Branagh and the resentment of Elizabeth Debicki. Apart from this, the characters have personality and attitude, and the promptness of the chemistry between John David Washington and Robert Pattison facilitates the focus to the goal. “Tenet” is an experience that is worth a lot. Amidst its complexity, there is a very interesting show to watch and, even though we may have to go back to the film several times to find some answers, it will always be a journey full of excitement and surprises.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Tenet is a great film, but don’t get me wrong, it isn’t exactly the second coming of Christ. Some of the action is an art form (after watching I'm still watching the first 6 minutes just to see the sheer greatness of that theatre shooting) the time technology is fairly understandable but some of it still confuses me (if i didn’t drop it what makes me make it come up? And, if I throw it, could I make it fly back to me?) but it doesn’t distract from the plot too much. John David Washington [the protagonist] plays his role rather awesomely, and Robert Patterson (who is my second favorite character, [Neil])

Because of the structure of this film you are forced to think differently in regards to how the past, present, and future are almost abstract and interconnected simultaneously. Odd way to put it i know, but its just fitting for some strange reason. I would suggest watching this with another 1+ person because there will be definitely things you catch that they don't and vice-versa throughout the movie. The fact of the matter is this film isn't for everyone. You have to be invested in the idea of inversion as a whole to truly understand this film. Not Emily from buzzfeed who's favorite movie is twilight. Is tenet complicated? Hell yes. Tenet is easily director Christopher Nolan's most complex film to date but it's also his most ambitious in that right. This is Christopher Nolan's take on a bond film and wow is it spectacular. Now to actually the review part of the movie. Tenet clearly shows that most of Christopher Nolan's work has led up to this film. You can see influences of Inception, Memento, and Dunkirk clearly present. That is not a critisism however due to it only elevating the film to be somewhat familiar but still a breathe of fresh air from the "rollercoaster films" we are used to seeing in 2020. The only critisism I have for tenet is the setting up for the story was not done as well as it could and became often a jumbled mess of connections to characters that you know nothing else about. The biggest strength of tenet is its last act however. The pacing is incredible and keeps you invested in the films finale. The ending didn't quite have the punch of Nolan's other films such as Interstellar but it still was a satisfying ending none the less. I do hope Nolan goes against his norms and makes a sequel for tenet however as out of all Nolan's films other than the dark knight this film cries for a sequel. In conclusion tenet isn't for the people looking for a simple film or people who have critisized Nolan's films in the past but if you do not fall under that category then Tenet is an engaging spy movie like none you have ever seen before and is among the director's best. Tenet is spectacular.... Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Tenet was an extremely entertaining movie, with an absolutely incredible concept displayed masterfully in this movie. The execution is also brilliant, the editing, acting, soundtrack and script were all very well made and the whole plot has a lot of detail which some people will think is pretentious but others will love because it makes this movie even better on a rewatch. The characters are interesting, however at some point you could say there is a bit of a lack of personality. I can see where people are coming from when they say this but i mostly disagree. A common criticism i hear is that there isnt really any back story given for the characters. My counter argument is why should there be? I think that even though we dont know much about the characters and dont know their intentions behind their actions, it doesnt mean we cant root for them. We can see the "the protagonist" played by john david washington is the kind of person who cares a lot for other people from the beginning, and this is a perfectly plausable reason for him going back to save kat and for his determination in completing his mission. Overall tenet is by no means a perfect movie, (the sound mixing at some parts was quite poor) but it is a very unique one with a great concept and execution. Expand

You can tell this film was made by a master craftsman Director Christopher Nolan has made another master piece here. The music and the sound in this were a little over powering at times it does make the film very intense. The stand out performances for me were John David Washington and Kenneth Branagh whose performance in this is explosive and quite intimidating, his experience as an actor really shines through. Robert Pattinson and Elizabeth Debicki are also good in this. On one hand, Chris Nolan presented a film with incredible set pieces that would have wowed audiences in the IMAX crowd. Yet, it is a film of incredible complexity, explained by dialogue that were obscured by the typical "Nolan sound mixing". It is literally impossible to comprehend the flick without any subtitles. As such, having watched it at home, I could simply pause the film..rewind and see the portions that were difficult to understand. Can you do that in the cinemas? No, you can't. Having Nolan huffing and puffing to Warner Bros for releasing day to date their future movies on their streaming services meant that his reasoning to force WB to release it would involve a bit of his own ego (?). As such, this was not up to par with most of his projects (I would grade this higher than Insomnia, but lower than the Prestige in term of his works). Its box office under performance all over the world may be the reason WB radically changed their release strategy in 2021, changing moviegoing for good. Expand

The man's a genius and constantly finds new and innovative ways to bend my mind and keep me guessing! Naturally, having greatly anticipated this latest film of his, I had high expectations, and I can happily say that they were met! Without going into too much detail (cause trust me, the less you know, the better), the film follows a nameless protagonist (John David Washington), who is recruited by a secret organization and tasked with stopping a potential global threat. He also finds himself navigating and bending the laws of physics and time through his journey. First off, the most impressive aspect of this film was easily the action/stunts and effects. Nolan is a director who prides himself in using as little CGI as possible and relying more on realism and practical effects, and it certainly shows here, as everything is so well choreographed! Even more amazing is the fact that he was able to pull it off and incorporate it into the tricky time-inversion aspect of the film! The performances from all involved are stellar, with a great lead performance from John David Washington (fun fact: he's Denzel Washington's son), as well as some committed supporting turns from Robert Pattinson and a very villainous and sinister Kenneth Branagh. In terms of plot and story, I can't even begin to go into too much detail about it, not because of spoilers, but because in all honesty, trying to explain it further would prove quite difficult for me, as it's quite an intricate web of a film. All you should know is that laws are heavily defied and bent throughout, time and physics are unpredictable, and you'll have to follow carefully in order to catch a lot of details, but it's well worth your time. There are some spots where the film seems to lose its footing a little and takes some unexpected detours, but it also happens to jump right into the action from the very opening scene, and hardly lets up until the very end of the film. Overall, even at two and a half hours, it all feels very tense, tightly paced, and left me pretty floored by the end, even if I mostly felt that it doesn't quite live up to some of Nolan's previous films. But the biggest word of caution I can offer is that like with many of Nolan's previous films (Memento, Inception, Interstellar, Dunkirk), the narrative and science can be a little hard to follow, but just stick with it as best you can, and it'll more than likely be worth it in the end. The directing is in his usual style, although this time with less flare, given the environment. The plot is possibly one the most complex he has ever made, perhaps even a tad too much this time. But at least he tries hard to make you think while watching the movie and in the days afterwards. Acting was a mixed bag, sometimes I felt it a bit jarring. If I had to find a nuisance, compared to the other Nolan movies, the usual mandatory rewatching to understand completely the first viewing, wasn’t as enjoyable as usual, mainly because this time the complexity of the story felt more like a puzzle to solve. Overall, not a masterpiece, but an excellent movie for those who want to be engaged in a complex story and original material. Expand

Pros:
Visual spectacle and music/audio combine for an aesthetically pleasing and captivating experience
Technical achievement in the reverse scenes and fitting them all together in the timeline especially with the same actors
Kenneth Brannagh is convincing as a Russian mafia boss but his small stature somewhat diminishes his presence.
The music is very catchy and when it begins you can't help but get excited for what comes next
John David Washington plays his role well.

Cons:
The writing - dialogue comes off somewhat as if reading off the script
Characters are flat and one dimensional
Story is fairly bog-standard nothing Some misgivings with the reversal concept such as why cars are reversed if they exist in the non-reversed world but there is nothing to break suspension of disbelief if you don't think about it too much (like is said in the movie). Overall the effect is visually interesting and exciting when you revisit earlier scenes but reversed but as a plot device it is in the end unsatisfying.
The twists are fairly obvious especially for someone used to seeing Christopher Nolans films and others with cues like Shutter Island
Elizabeth Debecki is unconvincing as a lover, and hard to sympathize with.
The guy out of the Beatles movie was comically miscast
Robert Pattinson's character is inconsistent. He starts off as a character who is slightly loose and eccentric with a strange past, which was exciting to see him playing a brand new character but he loses this by the next scene and by the end becomes a heroic Cedric Diggory or Edward Cullen. I would have liked to see more development for him and or more homogeneity in the role on his part.
The final battle lets the movie down. Something involving the water such as submarines or the nuclear vessels would have been more in-line with the rest of the movie. All of the scenes with the hardened officer and military vehicles looked like they ended up in Afghanistan.

In the end it is a visual and audio sensation but not very appealing in the story or character department.
As is standard with Christopher Nolan films writing and acting falls down but visual and audio make it a spectacle worth seeing
I think with better casting and some more character development perhaps with more twists and a plot to be more emotionally invested in it could be improved. Overall perhaps it needed another writer on board or more time in the cooking pot to come up with a more in depth plot. Christpoher Nolan shows his strengths in visual and technical direction but it requires the human element to really make a film that hits home.

I feel it deserves a high score because it is just simply leaps and bounds better than most of the movies that have come out in recent memory but it also by no means a perfect movie or even close to it for that matter. That said the visual and audio appeal as well as the mysterious nature of the reversal concept along with Kenneth Branaghs character, his background and the whole tie in to that ominous atmosphere around all things nuclear make it definitely worth watching.

But then again, that alone is a nice filling when you think about it, because a movie with so much meat on its bone, sizzling with rich flavours and so much to chew on, there’s really no need for appetisers.

‘Tenet’ is a head scratcher of a movie, but I really really liked it. I did not fully understand all of it, especially on my first watch, and that is perfectly alright. Despite the movie being 2 hours and 30 minutes long, the movie runs at a quick pace with characters speaking at a fast rate, so it is a rush against time to try and keep up. Repeat viewings and discussions will be seriously needed to solve this complex, but grand puzzle.

As I said before, you can love or hate Christopher Nolan, but there is no denying the craftsmanship on screen is nothing more than extraordinary. I am not a die-hard fan of Nolan, even though I would consider him one of the best working director. I mean, there literally crashed a Boeing 747 plane for real in this movie. I have no idea how they filmed and executed it. I rarely asked this, but it gives me great pleasure to sit in a cinema and say, “how the hell did he do that?” And trust me, there was plenty of that throughout the movie. This Nolan guy is a madman.

All of Nolan movies follow the theme of time, but in this movie, time becomes his playground. There was some stunning and jaw dropping scenes involving time bending and reversing of time that was easily the highlight of the movie. I also love how it involves objects and the environment around the characters. What is even more impressive is that there was a mixture of both practical and visually trickery in some scenes. There was a fight between scene a SWAT guard and The Protagonist (John David Washington), one is fighting in reverse, while the other is fighting normal. A fantastic scene. The cast and crew trained for weeks learning how to move and fight backwards, while visual trickery was used in some aspect. Some old school movie magic.

The performances from everyone was solid. The presence of John David Washington makes his character The Protagonist compelling to watch. Robert Battinson, on the other hand, was the show stealer for me as this charming and sly fox. I hope his performance further makes mainstream audiences move away from his ‘Twilight’ days. I was surprised to see Aaron Taylor-Johnson in this movie and almost did not recognise him at first, but he was great. Elizabeth Debicki was also great, and her character was the only emotional anchor of the movie, in terms of the audience finding some attachment to.

I enjoyed Kenneth Branagh as the Russian villain of the movie and Branagh fully goes for it, as he is chewing up the scenes. Whenever the scene requires seriousness, I think Branagh pulled it off well, even if the character itself was a stereotypical Russian that you would see in a James Bond movie. Other actors such as: Himesh Patel, Dimple Kapadia, Clémence Poésy, and Michael Caine were all good.

The sound work in the movie was incredible. There was an extreme focus on certain details with sounds that adds so much to the intensity and scope of the movie, especially the gunshots which sounded very realistic and had that loud echo to it. It reminded me of Michael Mann’s ‘Heat’ and ‘Collateral’, in terms of gun shots.

The score from Ludwig Göransson was phenomenal and hearing it in the cinema was intense. It fitted every scene so perfectly. An electronic soundtrack with the melody playing backwards. The cinematography by Hoyte Van Hoytema was great once again and it was incredibly striking to watch. Everything on a technical standpoint was a marvel.

However, I have my issues with the movie. First, I had a hard time understanding some of the dialogue or what the characters were saying. Not because it was complicated, but because it was hard to make out what was being said. I mean, some of it was muffled. Subtitles would have been lovely. It also did not help that the characters talk really quick.

I am confident that this movie will have a special place in the future, as the ideas this movie presents is too fascinating to forget or brush off. Even days after seeing the movie, I am still examining the elements that came to light and piece together the puzzle to get the whole sense of the picture. Even those who think they got the plot; I can bet they are dead wrong. Those are the best qualities to a movie, in my opinion. A movie that only tells you so much and leaves your brain fighting for hints, but it’s that urgency of knowing the answers and returning to a movie that you weren’t keen on before, to only discover something new that you never got before. “ᴡᴇ ʟɪᴠᴇ ɪɴ ᴀ ᴛᴡɪʟɪɢʜᴛ ᴡᴏʀʟᴅ. ᴀɴᴅ ᴛʜᴇʀᴇ ᴀʀᴇ ɴᴏ ꜰʀɪᴇɴᴅꜱ ᴀᴛ ᴅᴜꜱᴋ.”

On one had I kept hearing how confusing it was - so that prepared me nicely not to feel as confused as I might have felt otherwise. On the other hand, this was my first new movie back in the theaters following the covid19 closures, and it was a Christopher Nolan movie so I was really excited to see this! That led me to in the end feel disappointed (how could anything live up to those expectations).

For the first portion of the film, I found myself thinking, " this is not the movie I anticipated seeing based on the trailer". It felt like a mission impossible movie with different actors. When things changed, it felt like I was being rewarded for hanging in there - and to an extent, the reward was satisfying!

Going into the film thinking it was a spy movie where the spies can at will step backwards in time to stop certain events sounded like a fun concept. The movie itself didn't have the "fun" quality I was anticipating. It was pretty much serious the whole way through. But then I have to remember what other Christopher Nolan movies feel like. They too are pretty serious.

Thinking back on the movie, it was a cool, very intelligent film - a gift to us film goers. Some of the dialogue was hard to track with, but it kept me working to keep up with it, and I felt rewarded in the end. For me it wasn't as good as inception, but it good along those lines. Thank you Mr. Nolan and team for working so hard to give us this cool and unique film going experience!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think the music of this movie is the best in Nolan movies. But the lack of some big-name stars is a reason for disappointment. For example, the bad guys are not bad enough and evil. The lack of a dangerous end of the world is a big failure. But Other aspects are good. Expand

The special effects and real-time location shots are some of the best of Nolan's career, James Bond-like and brilliantly photographed in a time sequence format by his cinematographer, Hoyte van Hoytema, who worked as DP on 2 other Christopher Nolan films, "Dunkirk" and "Interstellar." These are reasons the film should be seen in the cinema, on the big screen, to be truly appreciated. Took 2 points off (8 out-of 10) because, while I understood the concept of TENET, Saving the World and International Espionage, the plot is the most challenging to follow of all Nolan's movies. The film moves so quickly, so much going on, that plot points were missed in this first screening of the movie. In true Nolan fashion, as with some of his other films, TENET will require multiple viewings to discover what was missed and to fully comprehend the story. Fine performances from John David Washington as Protagonist, Robert Pattinson as his past-present-future partner Neil, Elizabeth Debicki and Kenneth Branagh who makes a great villain, and a cameo appearance from Nolan muse Michael Caine. The early exposition dump from the female scientist sets the stage for secret factions, incoming disaster and the nature of how the inverse time works. The move drops time and time again clear info on the inverse nature of time and how it works. The exposition dumps from the Arms Dealer, the main Villain, the side kick and hardass bearded soldier is straight forward. Plus the literal action sequence show visually how the inverse of time all works. The literal movie trailer has massive spoilers in so I didn't go into this movie blind I expected it. The final sequence was cool, clever and with a tinge of sadness. Awh shucks I quite liked that character no spoilers. Expand
