Disappointing. I'd much rather go watch The Force Awakens or Rogue One again than watch this film again. The kids liked it a lot, but for an old Star Wars fan it wasn't the movie I wanted.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last Jedi is not as good, or as bad, as it might've been. It's the best Star Wars movie visually. There are several great action sequences. However, there are plenty of problems. It doesn't really feel like a sequel to The Force Awakens. Snoke, who is introudced as a mysterious figure in Force Awakens, is completely wasted. Luke Skywalker, the hero of the original films, is virtually unrecognizable based on his behavior in this movie. Rey, the protagonist, is unrelatable; she's seemingly good at everything. The new characters are shallow and uninteresting (mainly Rose). The flying Leia scene was laughable. There are many more nonsensical plot details in this movie. This movie nearly killed my interest in Star Wars Expand

[NO SPOILERS]

I enjoy Star Wars and I'm a big fan of all the movies beside Episode I and II as well as the video games released on all platforms.

I went to this film with some expectations after rewatching Star Wars The Force Awakens which was a movie I quite enjoyed and I thought it was fun. And I left this one wondering a bit with some sentiment of disappointment.
Overall this movie is a huge pile of mess with some good enjoyable moments scattered here and there.

Things I like:

+ It's quite different than the others taking a slightly different direction in its settings, ideas, and characters. While not all of them hit the right spot, it's enough to keep it interesting and have the viewer curious about what will happen next. + Some of the effects are pretty good, well represented, solid characters and development with some twist and turns here and there.

+ Well done space battles.

+ A few new worlds for those that are interested.

+ Luke Skywalker

+ A nice well-done saber battle around the middle of the movie

Things I dislike:

- Unsatisfying moments, the movie doesn't deliver anything that's impactful enough to leave you with a sentiment of awe, unlike the previous ones.

- Some of the interesting story elements Force Awakens hinted at are either poor answers or they weren't answered at all. A big letdown here and a waste of good story elements that are just suddenly dropped.

- One of the biggest issues I've had with this movie is that it feels like a compilation of smaller Star Wars movies linked together to make this one. The story itself doesn't flow too well and there are a lot of inconsistencies.

- The plot is also forced with an arc parallel to the interesting bit of the story following Finn and a new character that's really unnecessary and kinda pointless in the end.

- Questionable decisions

- Snoke is a letdown and we find out nothing more about him in this movie. So if you're looking out to find out more from him, there's nothing here that will add to it.

- A lot of humor that's thrown in situations that just don't work. They remove the intensity and pressure by making jokes that aren't even that funny.

- Captain Phasma is also a letdown. She probably has as much screen time as she did in Force Awakens with the same amount of lines.

- We find out little to nothing about the story overall though to it's credit we do discover Luke's backstory as well as Ren's. Conclusion:

It's a decent movie, I wouldn't say it's bad but it's a far cry from a praise. I personally loved Star Wars Rogue One and this one falls in comparison which is a shame.
Luckily some of the characters hold up the movie with their well-acted scenes, good cinematography and camera work.
Luke Skywalker is holding up this movie and without him, it would fall even lower.
Overall it's a disappointment for the most part but there's enough in this for people to enjoy.

This one is more comparable to Revenge of the Sith, for some will be lower than Revenge of the Sith and for others, it will probably be a bit higher.

Just don't expect anything outstanding and don't think that some of your questions about Snoke, Finn, Rey and other characters will be answered here.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am a bit very torn in my review. I will say I knew going in that Disney is unfortunately obsessed with promoting its left leaning SJW politics into its movies. I would highly suggest they refrain from doing this as it’s extremely distracting while watching the movie to be patronized. It’s like they think we are dumb and don’t realize what they are doing. That said, it was extremely entertaining in parts. Overall, I was entertained, and I tried my best to just roll my eyes at some of its ridiculousness. If Disney wants to make a movie about why you shouldn’t go to war, don’t you think it’s a bit odd to do it in a movie that is glorifying explosions and conflict in slow motion? Lol. Make a separate movie about that please. Shove it full of your politics, just please for the love of God and for everything that is decent in the world, I beg you to leave it out of our Star Wars films. What I liked:
Greatly entertaining opening sequence. Cool scenes with Snoke, but only two…
Fight scene with the imperial samurai looking guards
Luke’s scene at the end, very emotionally satisfying

What I loathed/hated:
Leia flying, WTH? What were you smoking Mr. Johnson?(LAME)Just have her get injured but doesn't die. Rose and her SJW warrior babble, Johnson managed to create a character more annoying that Jar Jar Binks(LAME). Her sister seemed way better for the 15 seconds of screen time. Lora Dern’s Purple hair. WTH? Is this the Hunger Games? Really distracting
Luke being a curmudgeon(LAME). Seriously, Rey hands him his first lightsabre he was holding when his hand got chopped off by his dad. I don’t think he would throw it. It would have been so much better if he wanted to train Rey, but she doesn’t want to for some reason. I would have preferred him to be a more valiant character like Ben Kenobi.
Snoke getting killed with no backstory.(LAME)
Captain Phasma appearing to get killed (Lame)
Kamakaze pilot Dern (LAME). Why didn’t all he other ships do this first? Speeches about evil arms dealers by Rose and Benicio Del Toro(SOOO LAME)
Whole CANTO BLIGHT SUB-PLOT (LAME)
Whole premise about can’t catch one space cruiser running out of fuel? (LAME)
Clone copy of scenes elements from Original trilogy. (BB-8 popping out of an AT ST like Chewbacca), (Hoth like Trench with resistance fighters and encroaching AT AT’s), Benicio Del Toro double cross, just like Lando in Empire. (ALL LAME) I didn’t like Abram’s TFA very much and I don’t care much for the Finn, Rey, Poe or Ren, as they are not very likeable. So not really looking forward to Episode IX, Abrams gave Johnson an easy slam dunk and Johnson his handing him back a deflated limp pile of Dooku.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really really really want to like this film, and I have tried, but I just can't. It is a very well polished turd, the core story of the film is just so incredibly stupid. It kind of gives me the same type of feeling that Mass Effect 3 left me with. A form of emptiness. It was the first time I left the cinema after a Star Wars film and just felt zero excitement. Initially the movie was a 7/10 for me but the more I thought about it the more all the flaws got stacked up. For me The Last Jedi is a 4/10. It gets plus points for its beautiful cinematography, great acting from the main actors and by just being Star Wars. I like the way they killed Snoke and that Kylo did it, but it happened too soon and we got ZERO **** INFO ABOUT HIM. Instead of the stupid Finn and Rose storyline they could have given us backstory to Snoke before killing him and actually have Rey trained by Luke on that **** island.

But it was so damn disappointing in so many ways, it felt like every time a key plotpoint was going to be answered and an "expected" conclusion could come, they went a whole other crazy non-logical direction just to prove a point. There were so many opportunities they could make a cool ass story out of this, but instead it gave us the most boring conclusion possible. Very sad about this film, it has literally left me emotionally scarred.

Also, that milk scene.

This movie looks like Fast&Furious was made by Michel Bay in Star Wars setting with a lot of unnecessary moments, illogical actions and a lot of clichés. Also Disney went over the top with these cute robots and crappy-eyed birds, it really became so annoyed (please don't buy your kids toys and merch with new SW creatures, don't support Disney). So, this is not bad movie, if you haven't seen SW before, but very bad experience for SW fans (even worse than loot crates BFII for me personally). Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Disney really screwed up this time. If we all recall, the first words spoken in The Force Awakens were "This will begin to make things right." by Lor San Tekka. After seeing The Last Jedi, things are certainly not right. It seems that Disney has opted to not go the route of the traditional Star Wars lore that we all grew up loving and what made Star Wars so damn popular in the first place but has instead gone with action sequences that would make Michael Bay proud and corny humor that often falls short of the intended target. THE FOLLOWING SECTION CONTAINS SPOILERS:
The way some of the story elements were handled often disregarded the importance of a particular character or item to the overall arc of the saga. The way Luke was handled almost seems as if his backstory or the importance of the character is to the fans was nothing more than an afterthought in order to create more room for Disney's vision of Star Wars. Some of the actions that Luke takes in this new entry is so far from what the character from Return of the Jedi would have done that is teeters a bit on the absurd. The Skywalker family lightsaber has been in the saga since the beginning and some could even call it the "Excalibur" of the film yet it was needlessly destroyed in a sequence with Rey and Kylo. I believe that portion alone shows Disney's disregard for the past. It almost felt as if Disney was conveying "screw the past and the stories George Lucas created, this ship is ours now and we don't care what the fans or anyone else believes so we will do with it as we please".

For now it is believed that Rey's parents were "nobodies" which is completely upsetting. I'm holding out hope that they are pulling the ole "New Hope" trick where Obi Wan tells Luke that Vader betrayed and murdered his father and that in Episode 9 they will have a "shock", gotcha moment where we find out her true parentage. I can keep going on about things I did not like with this film but I will spare you the drama and let you draw your own opinion. I will leave it with this: The Last Jedi fails on so many level. It completely ignores what was set up by Abrams in The Force Awakens and does its own thing. I don't even feel like this deserves to be apart of the Saga films. Matter of fact in my eyes it isn't. The action sequences were great which is the only reason I gave this a 4 out of 10 but when reflecting on this new film and Episode 7 before it, it all just feels so much like high budget fanfiction. I have a bad feeling about this...

This movie made me feel sad and confused... Rian Johnson made such a focused effort to subvert your expectations that you become numb to the random "GOTCHA" moments throughout this film. Conflict is created for the sake of conflict, and characters are beat down contrary to their established arcs just to elevate other characters. I love Rey, I love Jyn (I love strong women in general, Sarah Conner for example) but Holdo and Rose were horrible characters that were forced in to make a political point. It was either telling the audience that Poe is a moron hot shot loser, or that saving space horses is more important than the mission. This movie has criticisms of capitalism... the same capitalism that allowed Disney to buy a monopoly of the entertainment system... the same system that makes them billions of dollars per year. I don't need to be preached at in my Star Wars, I need to escape to a Galaxy Far Far Away. Summary:

Negatives

- Horrible new characters
- Previous characters are totally uncharacteristic and untrue to themselves
- Rian Johnson Breaks the Force
- #JusticeforAkbar

Positives

- Throne room
- Hyperspace (even though it breaks canon)
- Adam Driver's performance

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think I can sum up my feelings about this movie as: entertained, but very disappointed. It is truly an entertaining spectacle: the visuals and the musical score are great. All fun and worth my money if this were a generic sci-fi flick. But this movie fails horribly as a Star Wars movie. The Last Jedi somehow pulls off an incredible feat by conflicting not only with the original 6 movies, but also The Force Awakens, which concludes 35 seconds before this movie begins. Having different writers undoing what the previous movies set up is not a formula for success. The Good: I was absolutely annoyed with Disney's decision to reboot Episode 4 and call it Episode 7. I give TLJ some credit for not being an obvious rip off of Episode 5, but they narrowly straddled that line. Some scenes are obviously lifted from ESB but in different order. Particularly the Speeder v AT-AT battle on the white, desolate planet to protect the shielded base. You know the one. Kylo Ren was very well written; as a matter of fact, he’s the only character they developed in this movie. I also felt like the music was kicked into high gear this time around. My only complaint was that it wasn't new music, just old scores we've heard before. The movie also had some interesting character designs, such as the new imperial guard with their lightsaber-resistant armor. The new First order ships were interesting and the hyperspace ramming scene was one of the coolest things I'd ever seen in Star Wars. But the integrity of the Star Wars universe can't be sacrificed for the sake of the spectacle and this movie is very, very guilty of this.

The Bad: there are many places where TLJ misses the mark, and sometimes undoes what was established in movies prior. Disney’s fingerprints are all over this because there were so many bad attempts at humor, even in serious scenes. I can’t believe there was a 'your mom' joke - prank call in Star Wars.. and it was right before a big space battle. Wow. Finn and Rose are completely useless and their subplot drags the movie on for an extra 45 minutes. Going back to the hyperspace ramming scene, it just completely changes the game for how Star Wars battles should take place. Star Destroyer-sized ships and above should be sitting ducks for hyperspace kamikaze. Even the Death Stars. As cool as it looked, I'd rather they'd never included it. The writers also took EXTREME liberties in their portrayal of Luke. The way he behaves in this movie, you'd think you were watching a deranged clone or homeless Mark Hamill. I don't love Episode 7, but it established the good and bad guys were looking for Luke because he's the key to saving the galaxy. The opening crawl says as much! But not only did Luke not want to be found (why was there a map??), he is depressed, jaded and overall isn't in character until Rey yells at him. I don't understand how Luke can redeem the most feared tyrant in the galaxy, Vader, but fantasizes about killing his own nephew in his sleep before he's ever done anything wrong. That completely erased the conclusion of Luke’s evolution from Eps 4-6. That's no Luke Skywalker. That is complete shenanigans. Worse so, hardly any of the questions left open from TFA are followed. Rian Johnson faked the audience out by waving off the mysteries (and plot holes) JJ Abrams created in TFA. But by doing so, he left a void of backstory surrounding nearly everything we've seen on screen since TFA. Very poorly done. Rey's mysterious parents and missing last name? None of it mattered -- she's simply Jedi Jesus for no reason. Snoke, the man who turned the galaxy upside down and corrupted Ben Solo? Dead within the first half of the movie. Just destroyed Death Star #3? Doesn't matter, there’s still an infinite First Order fleet and the Resistance is even weaker than before, somehow. In fact, they STILL haven't bothered explaining the Resistance/F.O. conflict at all. They eventually go back to saying "rebels" in this movie, so I really have no idea what's going on. How can I enjoy this trilogy if I can't follow along?

So all in all, The Last Jedi improves a bit on the originality side of things, but barely. It's ESB with the scenes moved around. I was certainly entertained. But the writers failed to fit this movie in with the greater Star Wars continuity. Narration was sacrificed for spectacle. Old characters and their relationships have been sacrificed to prop up new characters. Space battles from past movies have been completely rendered useless since we could have hyperspace rammed things this whole time. I just don't recognize this new brand of Star Wars. I think it is entirely meant for new fans only, because clearly no attention is being paid to the source material. I expect more writer shenanigans when the reins go back to JJ for episode 9, so more time will be spent answering/obfuscating things introduced in this movie instead of telling a NEW story. This may be where I finally get off the Disney Star Wars train.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ok, my rant back then was awful. I complained about the film, but then I went off about users needing their voices to be heard, and while that would fit for Rotten Tomatoes, it wouldn't fit here exactly. Let me redo this.
The movie is filled with awful comedy. The jokes get in the way, are awkward, and just drag on. The Porgs are also annoying and unnecessary.
Finn, Poe, BB-8, Phasma, Hux, and the other side characters are mistreated and don't really do anything. And because they barely interact with Rey and Kylo, they come off as unnecessary filler. The Canto Bight part was irritating and long, and Holdo's stupidity was painful to sit through.
I also hated how main plots from TFA were concluded, like the character of Snoke, Finn and Phasma's rivalry, Rey's parents being nobodies, Rey possibly joining the dark side, Kylo posibly joining the light side, etc. With all of those being finished, this trilogy basically became a rip off of the original trilogy. TFA was already so similar to A New Hope, and this just became Empire Strikes Back. A character trains to be a Jedi and learns more about themselves, people need help fighting the bad guys so some of them go to a fancy planet for help, main characters have a personal feud and try to convince the other one to join their side, etc.

I did like the story between Rey, Luke, and Kylo. That kept me interested in what was going to happen next. But this film is bogged down by the new direction and writing.
"EPISODE IX WILL PROBABLY KILL CHEWBACCA, HAVE BAD JOKES, AND WILL BE A RIPOFF OF RETURN OF THE JEDI!"
Me from the future: I got 2 out of 3 of those right. Chewbacca was nearly killed, but Leia took his place instead.
So, 3/10.

The Director of The Last Jedi had little regard for creating continuity from the previous film. This movie also has several of the problems of the previous film of the sequal trilogy, The Force Awakens, such as the characters are very shallow and 1 demensial and are more or less more a "diverse" version of the original film. The protaganist Rey is the ultimate Mary Sue, and the antagonist Kylo Ren is not a very intimidating villian espically compared to pass star wars villians such as Darth Vader and Darth Maul.

The actions scenes were exciting but if you're a long time fan of Star Wars you will be sure to be disappointed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Star Wars has changed, and we should understand that.
Changes can be good or bad and in this case, we got a bad one.
It's understandable to a company to introduce new characters, a new enemy, change some things here and there, but what was done to this franchise can only be considered failure.
The good things in this movie are: Soundtrack and Photography. That's pretty much it.
Now the bad things... Well, I will just say some that left me disappointed and saddened.
First, the scene were Leia comes back to the spaceship after surviving an explosion and wandering in space... what?! How did she come back? How did she survive being in the vacuum of space? Not just the cold, but her eyes would have popped from her head.
We have Snoke and Phasma's deaths occurring prematurely (in my opinion) making those characters completely worthless. You might argue how the same thing happened with Palpatine and Boba Fett, but here's the thing. Palpatine and Boba Fett were characters that appeared when the SW universe was still "in creation", as Snoke and Phasma were introduced in a already existing one, with books, movies, cartoons, HQ's and more. Palpatine even has some more backstory and lore added to his character trough the Book of the Sith aswell.
J. J. Abrams vision on Luke is sh*t. I understand that people change over the years, but what happened to Hamill's character was a complete failure. Luke sulking on that island, refusin to help Rey, wanting to end the Jedi... It hurts to think about that.
The whole story about how and why Ben became Kylo Ren, his "connection" with Rey... That's was just bad. It was weak. His character grows more and more unbearable and meaningless, with goals that are just too cliché to be good.
The movie itself, cast, photography, soundtrack are all good, for someone that don't really cares about the SW Universe, it might be a good movie. But if you were a fan already this is gonna be hard for you to watch. Abrams was a mistake, Disney was a mistake.
Star Wars didn't die as hero and became a villain with a poor new trilogy and new games that just want to consume your money made by mErcenAries.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I can't believe so many fans loved it, it felt like they were trolling original trilogy (and even Force Awakens) fans to me. The way they treated old characters, Ackbar, R2, and even Luke felt deliberately disrespectful. The whole movie felt like a big middle finger to me. Do you like Ackbar? Too bad, here's some random edgy woman with purple hair for no apparent reason. Oh, and apparently we can lightspeed into other ships now? Why didn't that ever happen in the older movies? Also, why does Luke want to murder his nephew when he wanted to risk everything to save his father for the same reasons?

Even if you can look past those things as a general movie goer, I just can't see how this movie constitutes an objectively good movie (other than on a purely superficial level only). I understand that some Star Wars movies had plot holes but this movie was literally riddled with obvious ones that broke the immersion for me. We can't kill ships from behind now (#Whathappenedtotiefighters and #thebigasscanontheyhadoncrate)? Why didn't Holdo tell Po her plans? Why didn't Po know who Holdo even was? Why bother have Benicio del Toro rat out the rebels plans when Snoke can literally see the transports out his window? Why did Benicio del Toro wait until Finn/Rose arrived to break out of prison? Why was Po able to single-handedly disable all of the dreadnaught's weaponry before they launched tie fighters? Everything done in this movie was done for short term entertainment value at the cost of consistency. Plot twists, plot twists, plot twists! You didn't predict anything coming, that means we're good at making a story! What they forget is that consistency, namely the rules of "what's possible," and trust are very important in a fantasy setting. Consistently trick me and eventually actions and their consequences will lose all meaning. Let magic like the force, ship shielding, or lightspeed(or whatever sci-fi elements available) do things they've never done before and you essentially push the limits of the pre-established rules of the Star Wars universe. Stretch those rules too much and eventually it may feel like actions have unrelated consequences, it allows for writers/directors to pretty much do whatever they want with great convenience. The audience starts to see a pattern of "anything goes" ala Harry Potter style and suddenly you find the director/writers scrambling to write themselves OUT of the corner they wrote themselves into. Each power given in one scene for convenience may need to be taken out of another scene - for convenience. If a character becomes too powerful you may have to find ways to counteract their powers: you can't trap a character that can teleport unless you come up with some convenient plot device that suddenly stops the character from teleporting. And that's the problem with The Last Jedi- it establishes technology and powers that invalidate the rules already established (ex: why didn't they use lightspeed on the death star). You can't have a ship lightspeeding through whole fleets- it's too powerful and will need to be written out of episode 9 by some counter technology. Every time they come up with a new outrageous power/tech it stretches our suspension of disbelief. It may be fantasy/sci-fi but it still needs rules to be taken seriously.

Anyways, if those things weren't bad enough, the overall story is just poor. The 2 hours of running out of gas and failed subplots of Finn and Rose amounted to a story pretty much about running. What's the message? **** happens and sometimes you do more harm than good? Unless you're Rey of course, you can't do any wrong even when handing yourself to your enemy. Also, everyone hates the rebels and you have absolutely no friends to help you out. How small is this galaxy exactly? Oh yeah, blowing up 5 planets in Force Awakens isn't grounds for a rebellion but Luke becoming a "legend" by astral projecting is enough to rally the children? Sounds like every heroic action in these movies is pointless unless you're a jedi. Also, from Finn's and Po's perspective, they've literally done more harm than good and maybe they shouldn't have even tried at all. There's some lessons to be learned but the movie is confused in conveying it. Reprimand Po for his impulsiveness but then cheer him on later for the same traits. Have Finn waste time looking for a hacker and fight off against his nemesis only to get thousands of people killed. Oh, and apparently rebels are as bad as the First Order because they buy weapons from the same people.

It has always been a part of my life, through sickness, health, sunshine and rain. I was diagnosed when I was young with a serious personality disorder. I saw councilor after councilor and eventually nothing helped except sitting down and watching my favorite movies (and RPG games but that's not why I'm here). I loved the Force Awakens and Rogue One, I even didn't mind the prequel trilogy, OK granted I and II weren't that good but I enjoyed Return of the Sith and I at least wanted to know what happened next in I and II. My point being there hasn't been a single Star Wars film that I have truly disliked, if anything I may well owe to it my life. No exaggeration.

With this in mind I do not want to speak negatively of a franchise that means so much to me BUT: (and this is a big but, and I cannot lie) The Last Jedi is, IN MY OPINION, a bad film. Hell it may even be a bad film objectively. I'll start with the pacing issues; this is how the last Jedi plays out, "hey you like the first scene from a New Hope when the star destroyer's chasing the Tantive IV? Yes? Of course you do its a great scene! How would you like that scene to run for THE ENTIRE MOVIE? Not so much? Oh, tough your getting it anyway and we'll throw in random bits of Empire as well but we'll still say it breaks new boundaries. Also while this, seemingly decade-long, Space chase is going on we'll cram in the rest of the movie." It was a mess and no amount of space combat, breathtaking as it was, was going to distract me from it. I mentioned the "bits of Empire" there were many moments when I found comparisons. I don't, initially, have a problem with similarities, I loved TFA, but when every reviewer is saying its innovative and fresh I feel ripped off. Not so much by Disney on this aspect but by the journalists that misled me. Thank God for user scores. One more thing about the truly awful, giant chase scene; its a small thing but there's a moment when one of the nameless Imperial generals says "they are lighter and faster than us" um... they are in Space, weight's not an issue.

It wasn't all bad of course. There were elements that were great, John Boyega and Daisy Ridley were fantastic and actually gave me a sense of national pride (I'm British). Kelly Marie Tran and Benicio DelToro were very good too. A breath of fresh air. It looked great, the fight scenes were ace and what it got right, it nailed. It's a shame to see Rian Johnson fail as I really enjoy his previous work (Looper was so good). "So, nameless, gender-less internet user of unknown sexual identity, it doesn't sound all that bad why such a low score?" I hear you ask, well if your still with me I'll explain in the next paragraph.

The worst and frankly most unforgivable thing about the last Jedi, for me, was the handling of the late, great Carrie Fisher. As a life-long advocate of mental health awareness she was an inspiration to me for more reasons than just being Leia. I don't care who's "creative decision" it was to essentially ignore the fact that an international icon has passed away, the fact is it genuinely upset me. I tried to watch it for the second time yesterday and walked out as soon as they destroyed the bridge and she floated off with all the dignity of a condom in a river. 15 minutes and I was done. It was a huge kick in the teeth. I could have forgiven the unexplained, survive in spaceness of the initial "death" scene if they'd had the decency and the guts to give her a proper send off later in the film. They had several perfect opportunities, not least of all when the rebel cruiser hyperdrived through the other imperial ship. That was potentially the big redeemer. It was a great scene. Instead of using that other general (who was so forgettable I can't remember her name) why on Earth (or Alderaan) didn't they let the aging Princess make one final, valiant sacrifice to save what she loves? I would have cried like a baby right there in the cinema for all the right reasons instead of quietly crying to myself after being let down so hard. This would of also made that forgettable rebel general lady much more of an interesting character going forward. Speaking of going forward, as Disney have stated (loudly) there will be no CGI Leia, the only alternative is to just write her out like she's nothing. NOT GOOD ENOUGH!

So there it is, this is my first review anywhere so I'm sorry if it was long but I had to get this out of my head. To summarize; Star Wars the Last Jedi had infinite potential after TFA but it was very much let down by terrible pacing and incredibly insensitive handling of a subject that's very important to a lot of people. There were some gaping plot holes on top, meaning I've lost all interest in IX as well. Such a shame.

Wish I could get my money back. Lots of poorly thought out scenes, overall plot makes little sense. Does not continue the story of the previous movie, this isn't a trilogy at this point, just a set of disjointed crappy moments.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie made me sad.
Audio-visually great movie is disrespectful to the original trilogy at best. Makers of the movie should be punished by law for assault on icons of popular culture. Casino world (Canto Bight) scenes should be cut all together as they are pointless.
I get it that they have to close stories of the original characters.
Ray character is as bland as possible.
Closure to Luke is lazy.
Closure to Leia is non existent.
And there is Sonoke. You may argue that Emperor Palpatine was introduced out of the blue. But there was no Star Wars movies outside the original trilogy, so they can introduce new characters without backstory.
But if you have so much material as canon, how can you introduce the most powerful character and kill it 5 minutes after?
Again. Lazy.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Star wars episode 8 is hands down the worst in the series, SPOILERs follow!!!....

First let me say that it is entertaining, in the way cat videos on YouTube are entertaining, they make you smile, chuckle and pull out a few "awww" moments to tug on heart strings, but offer no depth or substance, the beautifully filmed movie and amazing actors are thrown away by poor plot, awful writing and insane direction.

It leaves more questions than not... firstly halfway through the movie snoke is killed off.... yes the mysterious dark, menacing insanely powerful forced using leader of the empireish first order is dispatched by a fledgling kylo... How the hell did a master force user allow himself to be taken in such a way by someone so below him. Secondly it is luke who is killed off not Leia  (who is dead in real life of course) so now instead of sending her away in a swan song amazing moment they will either have to rely on CG or some unexplained death in episode 9. There was no jedi training... none, zero... rey is on the island but basicly is told how awful jedi are and butthurt luke is and hes hung up on the past but ya nothing happens... you do see space penguins called porgs created for the soul purpose of a money grab via toys.  So luke is killed, completly wasting a character 40 years in development, no final showdown with snoke no amazing send off no... the mf literally fades into the suns... period. Snoke dies as mentioned above, this mysterious full of potential character that appeared from nowhere and somehow convinced the first order to follow him is killed off before we get any damn answers... Another wasted character..

Did you like phasma? Too bad, shes dead now too.. yeah... kylo does a brief moment of light side **** making us think the story will pick up when he kills snoke but nope, it was only so he can rule... So now this powerful sprawling army of the first order just happens to be cool following him for no reason just because? Ladies, dudes... This movie answers nothing and kills off the best parts of the series in the worst most un-thought out ways possible. And no you don't find out who rey is.... I'm not a fanboy who hates new star wars movies because i can't let go of the originals in fact i loved episode 7 because the promise it had and strong characters it teased, the story had such promise but now its dead, the prequels look like gold compared to this. I do not blame the actors... This is the fault of writers and directors. It is crap and I mean it 100%

Don't get me wrong, there were some up ticks in this film, but you have to suffer to get to the good stuff. The tone was silly at times and the plot devices were very convoluted. In some scenes, characters are explaining things in gruesome detail that you should know from simply watching the scene. This complete lack of subtlety makes these scenes feel forced.

Just thinking about this mess of a film makes me not want to watch Star Wars at all, and I LOVE the original films.

After The Force Awakens i hoped many things would be explained in this followup movie. But you leave the theater with more questions than before. Also: For me the Star Wars Universe is very dark and sinister (especially the Sith). The Jedi represent the other side: strong, honorable knights of the light side. In this movie i think everybody is a friggin, absolutely useless moron. Every character doesn't fit in his role and you respect none of them. The Last Jedi creates a family friendly ambience throughout the whole movie with jokes and absolutely zero seriousness. You don't fear the dark side because the main antagonists in this movie behave like standup comedians. At moments i thought i was watching Space Balls and not Star Wars...
Many decisions by the characters in the movie make no sense and the pace in the middle part is absolutely horrible. But the worst thing about the movie is how the characters can use the force without any training. In 6 movies we learned that it is very difficult to master the ways of the force. Many people inside the Star Wars universe don't even know that the force exists. But here it seems to be as easy as taking a dump after dinner.
If you don't know the Star Wars Universe and haven't seen any Star Wars movies before you will enjoy yourself. You can even call it Guardians of the Galaxy 3 if you like. But as a Star Wars fan i am VERY disappointet by this movie and can only give it 4 out of 10 points.

Its fun and enjoyable at points, but half of the time I would shrugging my shoulders and wincing at forced attempts at humor and terribly constructed pacing and scenes. Its clear Johnson and Kennedy & Co. dont really care to place an emphasis on good writing, dialogue, exposition, character/world building, or atmosphere. They just want to push out another tent pole movie with little care for the source. This franchise is on the way down the drain. Not unexpected, but sad to see. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wasn't expecting much from Episode VIII, but this is way more worse than i thought it could get.

Here my Pros and Cons WITH SPOILERS:
PRO - The effects are real badass some times
- The Hyperspace flight throught the ship
- The Technic luke brings up at the end

CONS
- The Story takes a **** about what "The Force Awakens" tried to introduce. We all thought: "Hmm, who's this supreme leader snoke? where does he come from? how strong he's connected to the force?". But then he gets killed by his student who haven't even finished his "apprenticeship". Supreme leader snoke is not frightening in any scene and is now replaced with this young boy who doesent know if he should cry or kill anybody around him.
- All Star wars movies nowadays need this cute little alien-animals, and then have to show them 10 times
- Some jokes are ridiculous --> Like Luke throwes the light saber away, after 1000 laser shoots Luke scratches his shoulder, the joke Leia brings about her hair when he meets Luke... thats just a few of them. This only shows that Disney doesen't take the franchise serious. It must be funy in most of the scenes, even if it fits or not.

I am not looking forward for episode IX. All of you, who may like this movie that much, are in my opinion new fans who don't care about the older trilogys or blind fanboys who take everything disney will throw at us the next 10 or whatever years.

I don't think I have ever been as disappointed in a film as I was when leaving the cinema after seeing The Last Jedi.

The Pros

-Kylo Ren was a genuinely interesting character and the actor did a great job in portraying his battle between the dark and the light.

-Carrie Fisher delivers a brilliant performance.

-One or two moments when the film manages to recreate the magic of Star Wars

The cons

-Many boring characters that serve no purpose to the plot.

-Complete disregard to the universe and rules established by previous movies.

-Plot lines that end up being inconsequential to story.

-The art direction and cinematography moves away from any other star wars film.

-The humor is very "marvel like" every character has to have several one liners that take away from the seriousness of the story.

-Unlike any other star wars movie.

Conclusion

If you are a fan of The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy then you might enjoy this film, however if you are looking for a good Star Wars movie then I'm afraid that "This isn't the film you're looking for

There's a reason the audienceThis review contains spoilers… It's almost impossible to know where to begin critiquing this film. TLJ is a film with so much promise but falls flat like Snokes corpse and the underused character development. There's a reason the audience score is the lowest of any Star Wars film. And like many, I hated almost every major plot decision in it.

TLJ is a beautifully shot, well directed, well acted, terribly written mess-of-a-film bristling with oddly placed Marvel-esque meta-quips, bizarre shifts in narrative tone, dull side-plots filled with Harry Potter-esque CGI creatures/fauna that are completely inconsequentia; that ultimately offers no logical character development and impacts the story in no way at all. You can say what you will about the prequels falling victim to cheesey dialogue and casting missteps but, and I HATE myself for even thinking this, they pale in comparison to the 2.5 hours of boring, disposable ‘busy-work’ the majority of these characters are given. Johnson clearly only has an interest in exploring Rey and Kylo’s characters as everyone else is basically going in circles and under-developed. On top of this the most insulting thing I felt as a viewer is that TLJ systematically deconstructs and undoes all that was set up before which has led some to exclaim how TLJ ‘bravely makes choices and gives you something you weren’t anticipating'… but actually it insults you for even caring about anything Abrams and Kasdan set up in TFA by not answering anything at all. TLJ is a film that blasts away the mystery and awe left by its predecessor, and shows its loyal, theory-obsessed audience that nothing is going to be linked to what they thought in ways akin to how the writers of LOST treated their viewers. Instead of leaving you with wonder about how this trilogy will continue, you’ll be left wondering what you’re meant to be wondering about with the future of the films.

Let me explain, if you want to kill off Snoke then do it, but don't make it a cheap death. Snoke hasn’t been developed enough to understand why it is meaningful, or not meaningful, when he dies to Kylo Ren; let alone me. If Rey is a child of nobodies, then make it meaningful why her lack of knowledge of her parents is in itself meaningful and important. Show us, or at least tell us, but don’t cop out completely with nothing to fill the cop out. Iif you’re going to 'completely flip the genre on its head' then don’t fill the film with constant ‘is he dead’, ‘no he isn’t’… ‘oh but now he is’ misdirection and psyche-outs. Even Finn, on his redundant side-mission, looked like he was going to die 3 separate times. One by execution, but then he doesn’t, then Phasma may have killed him, but then he returns, and then he tries to sacrifice himself by taking out the final super-weapon, but then he doesn’t… this rollercoaster was both taxing and infuriating; especially when this ‘fake-out/psyche' happens repeatedly to Luke, Rey, Finn, Leia and even Rose! Add on the rip-off chase plot from Battlestar Galactica and repeat the same scenario of Rebels need to take on a super-weapon 3 separate times (a dreadnought, a ship with tracking abilities, and a Death Star mini super-weapon and failing each time) and you’re left feeling really drained. Most of all this is a film, that disrespects Luke Skywalker character, one of my all time film idols, someone we saw briefly in TFA but I/we ultimately haven’t seen on screen for 35 years, by insufficiently explaining why he is the way he is and completely mischaracterising what we do see of him. For example, Luke refused to fight Darth Vader because he felt the conflict and good within him… yet he senses a conflict in his own nephew and for ‘reasons the script needs to happen’ Luke decides to murder him IN HIS SLEEP? Sure this sets up Kylo’s path and explains Luke’s guilt, but what led him to this point?!? What happened to Luke? Now he is just a grumpy, cowardly old man? The hero is gone???? What? Why? He doesn’t want to be found, but he leaves the galaxy a mysterious map so people can find him? What? Why?

Never ONCE in a trilogy that was had the opportunity to resolve the story arcs of our favorite heros did we even get Han, Leia, Luke, and Chewy in the same room! Now the actors who are alive have dead characters, and the character left alive belongs to a dead actress! All I can say is, JJ, I would like to think this was not your intended storyline from the beginning. I would like to think that Rian Johnson attempted to blindside our expectations but in doing so he simply betrayed the potential growth the new characters. Seeing as each writer and director seems to have a blank slate as they start each film, with the freedom to take things in any direction they want, combined with the similar amount of outrage this film is getting from divided fans, I can see Episode IX spending most of its runtime undoing everything TLJ deconstructs!

The Leia Force powers scene is atrocious, and the film struggles to recover from that point. A real missed opportunity. Expand

In short, great acting saved bad writing. The film was rife with forced comedy, political and religious jabs, and an unapologetic irreverence of established lore. A few lines of dialog revealed the underlying theme of the movie: Destroy the past, embrace the future. In that, Rian Johnson was successful as the film was more injurious to the legacy than any of its forerunners.

This film was more about Mr. Johnson hiking up his leg and urinating on the franchise to mark its new direction as his own rather than show any respect for his predecessor's work or the fan base that drives its success. No, he chose instead to tear everything down and infect a new foundation with his ideology.

Granted, some might say that’s a director’s job, but this isn’t an independent project. It cannot have a separate voice. As a continuing saga, it is wholly dependent upon everything that has come before it. Thinking otherwise is foolish. Acting so is even worse.

As further evidence of Mr. Johnson’s impertinence, the setups from previous films that demanded answers in this one were, instead, brushed off as irrelevant. They were either given a half-witted explanation or abruptly ended without one. Both are symptomatic of weak writing. This viewer left disappointed at the lack of effort.

Having said all of that, this is a Star Wars film, and as such, I respect that it is now canon and anxiously await the next episode, but only to cleanse my palette of this bitter pill. I just hope Disney never lets Mr. Johnson near a keyboard or the big chair again until he proves he has learned from his epic mistakes.

All of this dropped into weird sauce of plot holes, lack of logic, hollow secondary characters, and some bad visual design choices, disrespecting established legacy.

4 points. Because of the sentiment only.

Meh. Not a good script, plot holes and unnecessary childish jokes. The Force Awakens made me think about a lot of possible theories, this movie makes me think if I really want to watch the next one. In conclusion, a very big disappointment.

As a film onAs a sci-fi film, I thought The Last Jedi was a decent film with quite good imagery. Some scenes, like the scene with the cruiser blowing through the First Order's central ship, were actually really well executed and creative. As a film on its own, it definitely stands its significant ground, and show how much effort Disney has put into the franchise.
However, this movie is a sequel to The Force Awakens, and is an entry into the Star Wars series as a whole. And, on that ground, it concerns me how little care was given into recreating the atmosphere and style which made Star Wars what it is. The Last Jedi, above all else, feels like a Disney movie throughout its run time, which doesn't bode well for what should be a trilogy first and foremost. The aesthetic of a dirty, worn universe is gone, replaced by a more glossy and traditional Disney part-cyberpunk world likely because it's cheaper to shoot and animate for. This is a shame, considering that was one of the things J.J. did best in the previous film. Alien characters, too, have taken a cutback, a hallmark of Star Wars films. Interactions are kept to a bare minimum, with no subtitled scenes or, really, talking aliens whatsoever. Those that are there are mainly for comic relief, something the film has inherited an overabundance of from Marvel. (Yes, Star Wars has included humor in the past. But this feels different, and its comedy has that off-beat time which screams Disney over Lucasfilm.) The music is almost unrecognizable, with few notable themes throughout and low usage of the pre-existing score. Classic cast members were limited to only seconds of screentime, and what they have is painfully underutilized. This is a worse wound with the real-life death of Carrie Fisher, which means we have none of the classic cast able to fill living roles. Luke shouldn't have died in this film, especially since it could easily have been edited around. The plot, as a whole, is weak. The Force Awakens, with its sensation of buildup to this film, is virtually irrelevant. All of the plot points set up in the previous film are ignored, a common trait with this film. Much of the established canon is disregarded as unimportant, even with what was stated in the films themselves. Much of the dialogue is poor, too, making me think this is a script problem and not a direction issue. (I would follow by saying this is not Rian Johnson's fault, but iMDb states he wrote this film as well.) The story seems more obsessed with OCs and reinventing the wheel than it does following the traditions of the franchise, and that saddens me immensely. You can tell George Lucas was not consulted, and the plot suffers as a result.
All that being said, I didn't hate the film. Again, a lot of the space CG was effective, and I am thankful to say the Porgs are not nearly as prominent as the trailer makes them seem. Kylo Ren's character was much better developed in this film than it was in TFA, leading to his performance with Daisy Ridley working quite decently. But I don't feel this makes up for a narrative weak film with such a low respect for its original material.

You see character development of the two leads all stuff critics love.
However when Mark Hamil complained about the script - Disney executives rave about the brave new choices and direction of the script with unusual decisions for the Star Wars films. You can spot why fans of the universe are not happy. In the post-truth era, this means they must be Russian bots, I would have thought it should be trekkers if anyone but hey why ruins the Disney narrative especially as Cineplexes and Critics need to bow to the Disney/Pixar/Marvel machine or miss out. This says everything you need to know - this is not episode eight but the marketing department of Disney making the choices and decisions for the universe. As a standalone film - it is just okay, Star Wars has always had the love of fans and forgiveness of the fans for the absurdness of the scripts and ropey dialog - for every Jar Jar Blinks there is a Darth Maul. The universe is about hard work, self-sacrifice (Jedi) and good versus evil (Sith, who take the easy route). This film just throws that out and humanises the leads making them conflicted and unsure of themselves.
Without this trade-off of good versus evil, hard work vs easy route, all the absurdities and many pointless subplots, undeveloped characters obviously just inserted for their merchandising potential, the film just jars. Lots of new characters, lots of artsy shots, lots of humour (but not Thor quality) but nothing cool. Ships which require large crews to man and pilot - are suddenly performing massive manoeuvres which they previously were unable to complete with just one person standing in the middle of the bridge. The entire might of the first order is brought to bear on a single base - with a blast door. So this might of six plus destroyers is reduced to less than a dozen walkers and a single blast cannon. Even for Star Wars this is the least believable with the most glaring plot holes and absurdity - people who were not Force users in the seven previous films suddenly have the ability to fly through space, blow blast proof doors aside and no longer need to be able to breathe. The force is no longer a fabric of the universe and just a virus that randomly selects people and makes them so powerful that they no longer need to train or develop or learn. You just destroy all previous knowledge and millennia of knowledge - hard work is not needed anymore. The force is now fit for the snowflake generation. Some ships are going so slow that they are almost going backwards and the first order can't shoot a cruiser because it is too fast but said cruiser can't even inch any further away.

Poor Lily. 4) Wow, the Resistance sure is a small group of people. 5) Mark Hamill was wasted on this film, and unwanted by the director. 6) Pod racing scene with alien horses instead. 7) Snape hates sand too... it gets everywhere - wait this is salt and hang on, Uncle Luke isn't leaving foot prints? Screw it. Fire everything. 8) I know there's only about 40 of us left now, but DO NOT TELL POE ANYTHING 9) Excellent death scene for Carrie Fisher - it was sudden, it was shocking and it was sad, just like her real life death... then the director stole that moment from us like the bastard he is. 10 - 40) everything else in everyone else's comments and finally 41) Mark Hamill hates what they did to his most identifiable character. The core audience for this franchise skews older. Disney wants to make money going forward, and that means changing the skew of the core demo. And that's all this movie is -- trying to skew the movie to a younger audience. As a business decision, it's probably the correct one.

Sadly, they created a mediocre movie. Visually, this film is stunning. Adam Driver and Daisy Ridley are both extremely talented actors. They both put in great performances. But the massive plot holes, the terrible narrative choices, and the criminal wastes of the audience's time conspire to make the film, as a whole, simply...meh.

Star Wars movies have always been about black and white morality tales. Sometimes you get a gray-ish character in there for flavor. This attempt to create Breaking Bad in space undermines that history. And it commits some fundamental narrative sins: don't set the audience up for a big reveal, then not give it to them. Poor storytelling and poor writing.

Rian Johnson told us we wouldn't like his movie, in not so many words. We should take him at his word.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was in absolute awe when Rian Johonson was chosen to write/direct VIII. I truly loved Looper and Brick and was ready for "the best SW movie since Empire". Jezz, what a let down. The movie started with Poe's prank and somehow my head went back to good old Spaceballs...
Leia flew back to the Mon Calamari cruiser...a big WTF was blinking in red in front of my eyes
By the Casino scene I was already scratching my head wondering if this was a sequel to Guardians of The Galaxy, not a SW one.
Every single time Holdo or DJ popped in the screen something felt off, like "I'm not watching a Star Wars movie"
And when Luke died for no apparent or at least well deserved (plot-wise) reason I got really angry.

In the end Star Wars is suffering because of the lack of a clear map of how this new trilogy was going to unfold. When Rey, Snoke, Kylo or the Lightsaber were introduced in VII I thought that they had clear in mind their overall arcs and backstories, but as Rian Johnson has admitted there was no plan at all. And man it shows. It's clear that the plot for VIII was not what JJ Abrams would have written, and that Rian didn't like what JJ did in VII. Instead, the new director was obsessed with avoiding the pitfalls of VII (a copycat of episode IV) and thus he tried to surprise viewers...with almost every important decision made gone wrong. And since the trilogy was not mapped at all he could basically do what he wanted to do. TFA very clearly tried to set up new characters, mysteries...and Rian simply doesn't care at all. He is a man on a mission: getting ready a clean slate but doing it in a very surprising way. And in the process he lost track of what a Star Wars story should be and having characters acting out of character, even the new ones.

Is the movie a complete disaster? Should its rating be a zero? No way. It's beautifully shot, Hamill and Driver just kill it, John Williams is back, the FX are top notch and somehow you feel that there is a good movie buried under a pile of bad plot decisions. There are brilliant and thrilling sequences that should rank among the best in the series. But sure, I understand that for most diehard fans (like me) some of the mentioned plot decisions eclipse everything else. Now, the funny thing is thinking how JJ will try to fix the situation in IX...he created something promising, Rian thrashed it, and now he is receiving it back with the aim of closuring it ...somehow. We'll see.

I had very mixed feelings after watching the film. There were some parts I liked a lot and some parts I very much didn't. In general, I am sad to say that, for me at least the bad outweighed the good. I enjoyed the the story line with Ray. I liked a lot of the subversion of expectation. I liked to see a diverse group in positions of power in the rebels. Though I enjoyed the expanded universe, ultimately, I am perfectly fine with them diverging from it, they established that they would be doing so with the previous movie. I did not like much of the humor, especially where it derailed the plot and streaked suspension of disbelief. I also feel that the movie's creators mistook the difference between grand and dramatic, with the movie leaning into the territory of overly dramatic. I don't think the tone fits with the original trilogy, or even with the prequels. That is not to say that I feel different is bad, I love change, as long as it fits with and connects to what has been previously established. Finally, I felt many characters were shallow, the action was often a bit too over the top, and any overall message dis-guarded subtlety, coming off a bit heavy handed. Expand

But it still left me disappointed, for reasons that others have already described in great detail. However, the backlash back-and-forth between critics and audiences has been fascinating. So why are critic scores so high and audience scores so low?

Two words: Rian Johnson. Not necessarily Rian Johnson the director, but Rian Johnson the person. From what I can gather, Johnson is an awesome guy. He’s kind, dignified, accessible… everything most big-budget directors are not. He has built personal relationships with critics, bloggers and podcasters like no other director working today. Many people in the film-criticism world are actual friends of his, and many others feel like they could be friends should the opportunity arise.

So imagine you’re a critic, invited to the world-premiere of one of the most anticipated movies in history. Not only are you basically friends with the director, amazed that the guy you interviewed years ago after “Brick” has now directed a Star Wars movie, you’re also rubbing elbows with some of today’s biggest movie stars, all while being enveloped in the Disney hype machine. Think you might see The Last Jedi through rose-colored glasses? I think you might, and I think many did.
The only critic I’ve seen broach this view so far is the always-great Joanna Robinson at Vanity Fair. I think other critics need to take a step back and see if their view has been clouded by how much they love Johnson.

I was so excited when it was announced Johnson would be directing The Last Jedi. I loved Looper. That movie had swagger. The Last Jedi does not have swagger. Don’t get me wrong, Johnson is still a great guy, even if The Last Jedi is not up to snuff.

One last thing: The Last Jedi lost me early. I haven’t seen anyone else mention this, but there’s a shot in the first few minutes of the film where a couple of Resistance fighters are walking on the surface of the planet that’s being attacked. There’s a huge (green screen) explosion RIGHT BEHIND THEM and they’re just walking casually and almost jokingly asking each other if they should evacuate. It was an early bad omen for me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Great visuals/special effects, some ideas/concepts i.e. Canto Bite were interesting but not executed or realised sufficiently to make it satisfying. Some magical moments like reunion scenes i.e. Luke & R2, Chewie & Luke, Luke & Yoda that were genuine & heartfelt. “Some” of the humour was on point and there were moments of shear brilliance.
TFA was branded a rehash of previous films and even though I would agree at least the story was coherent and made sense, the character development was satisfying and it set things up perfectly in regards to paying respectful homage to the past and creating mystery for the future.TLJ is a victim of trying too hard to be what it needs to be “Original” and “Unpredictable” and in trying so hard to be these things it falls flat on every single hurdle.
TFA paid respectful homage to the original films carefully balancing the humour with serious moments. TLJ literally tries to rewrite these rules, making it come across as more like a spoof. The scene where Luke throws the saber over his shoulder could have been taken straight from an episode of the Simpson's, General Hux was turned into a bad stand up comedian repeating the same jokes over and over. There were a few really odd moments in TLJ, the one that springs to mind first and foremost is the character that should have been handled with so much care, because the actress is no longer with us. There were at least two moments in the movie in which could have been used to respectfully send off this character, but instead they decided to turn these ideal moments into missed opportunities and awkward situations. Princess Leia was quite literally turned into superman which was such a strange moment and very awkward. Not only did this make literally no sense at all considering Leia never had any Jedi training prior, it was such a disrespect to the character and talented actress whom is no longer with us.Luke milking a huge sea cow like walrus and drinking it,with a wink to the camera like it had been taken from an advert was again a scene that belonged in an episode of the Simpson's. Rey was one of the great characters developed in TFA,she worked really well with the character Kylo Ren she saw this character murder his own father in TFA,yet in this movie she is getting all hot and bothered by seeing him with no top on!
The majority of the movie was one big chase, entertaining from a visual/effects side of things, but it didn’t make a great deal of sense. The Maz Kanata snippet could have been taken straight from a video game, its almost like they needed to include this character and couldn’t come up with how to, so they did this just to include the character.Whilst the Canto Bite segment was in theory a great concept, the execution was all wrong, the entire scene felt like it was from a completely different movie, completely unnecessary and waste of half an hour, the time could have been utilised developing other characters that so desperately needed it.The Finn and Rose romance was unengaging and did not resonate.
TFA set up things so well for an eventual pay off in subsequent films. Snoke was a powerful character probably one of the most villainous characters ever. Yet he gets killed so simply that just makes you gasp in annoyance. Rey again such an important character in this new trilogy set up so well in TFA in regards to her parentage mystery and could of turned out to be anybody.Yet they decided to go with an overwhelming bombshell that she is a little orphan mary sue whom parents sold her for drug money.
Rey's training barely happened yet we are lead to believe she is now a fully fledged Jedi by the end of the movie. Showing Luke's X-wing submerged makes no sense unless he was going to raise it up out of the water at some point during the movie and use it to fly and save the day as Jedi Master Luke – but it never happened. Instead he decided to use his force abilities to project himself.
BB8 is the new R2-D2 that much is for certain but it made no sense to bring R2-D2 back to life purely to give us the map to find Luke or to remind Luke of the good O'l times.Everyone anticipated the return of Luke Skywalker, but the way they treated his character was a complete lack of respect. We are lead to believe Luke did not want to be found and went to the island to die,yet why did he plant/hide the segment of the map so that he could be found,it feels at times like director Rian Johnson didn’t even take the time to watch the previous movies before writing this one. Luke was willing to sacrifice himself in order to bring his father back to the light side, yet we are lead to believe that this is the same character whom is willing to murder his own nephew all because he senses a little darkness in him.
An entertaining film but leave your brain at home, but a hugely disappointing Star Wars Movie that does not deliver on anything that was promised in the previous instalment and pays little respect to the overall Star Wars Legacy.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Where to start. I didn't hate the movie but from what experienced it was definitely the weakest of the new Star Wars films. I left confused and disappointed. So much of what was setup in Episove VII simply vanishes. No Snoke reveal. Maz Kanata, who is pretty key in Rey's force journey makes a Skype cameo, Hux becomes a dunce. Too much humor, felt more like Space Balls or a parody then a dark, serious film. There were some good moments but I'm really being generous with a 4. It lacked any kind of plot, the time line which is supposed to happen right after Episode VII makes no sense, the First Order recovers in 5 minutes and Hux is finding the hidden, not so hidden base. The main Space Chase was just an awful plot device. I mean ships and people were jumping on and off of the Resistance and First Order ships in that sequence and Tie fighters destroyed the bridge of a ship, almost killing Leia, but no let's just chase them till the run out of gas? The ending was interesting and introduces us to new abilities in the force and the throne room scene with Rey and Kylo was awesome but outside of that the movie was 70 minutes too long, 100 jokes too many, and sought to do nothing then smash the die hard fans construct of the Star Wars universe. Disney is taking this series in the direction of it's Marvel films, so expect cheese, no plot, no real meat to the stories. Expand

What isn't rehashed from the original trilogy is lifted from Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings. There are enormous plot holes. Perhaps the worst was what they did with the last cruiser. If that was possible, why didn't they do it earlier? It makes screeching tonal shifts from the silly to the supposedly serious. The light sabre action is less exciting than in either of the other two Star Wars trilogies. I wouldn't like more Revenge of the Sith wire-fu. Return of the Jedi and The Phatom Menace got this right. The visual design is good, but this is true of most big budget films. Expand

Unfortunately after seeing The Last Jedi I have nowhere near as much enthusiam for seeing the next film. If I could describe The Last Jedi in one word it would be "Dissapointing". I feel like this film could of been so much more but ultimately fell flat in meeting my expectations. While there were some fun and visually appealing scenes throughout the movie they didn't make up for rest of the films weaknesses. I guess I could say this film lacked the spirit and fun the other films had ( Yes even the prequels ). It almost didn't feel like a Star Wars film at times but something else entirely different. It seems like the writers for this film couldn't decide what they wanted this film to be and after running out of time put out this jumbled mess. Ramblings aside, I can only hope the next film is able to redeem the franchise and if not I won't be tuning in for anymore Star Wars films. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a well made movie that is filled with missed opportunities and letdowns! Watching this movie was like having someone take a **** in my heart. They made Luke a coward and gave him no redemption. Dropped plot lines and threw away several characters. Where the hell are the Knights of Ren!? What about the other students of Luke that left with Kylo. Neither Rey nor Kylo received any training! The entire movie occurs over the coarse of like twenty-four hours which makes character development almost non existent! I Spent the whole movie waiting for that great moment that never came(excluding the throne room fight). Did anyone else notice that there is not a lightsaber battle in this entire movie? No two lightsabers come into contact with one another! Where the hell is Luke's green lightsaber? I enjoyed the force awakens to spite its many flaws. I never want to see this movie again and I no longer care about episode nine. I never thought I would say these words. Ryan Johnson should not be making his own trilogy if this is what he thinks star wars should be. I also cannot believe all the critical denial that is happening around this movie because critics are afraid to offend the creators and not get invited to the next flashy premier. The only thing to look forward to about this is the thirty minute honest trailer video you can make ripping this movie apart... Pathetic... 4/10 and that's being generous! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don’t understand people giving this movie 10s, it’s ridiculous.
I personally didn’t like how they killed off Snoke. No explanation on who he was, what he wanted. Oh well. Flying granny scene was .... I think pathetic is the right word. In the middle, when Rey and Kylo were connecting I really thought something special was going to happen. Either them switching sides of the force, evil Rey, good Kylo. Or them somehow reshaping the force into some new order... Maybe even bringing good and evil together through love. nah, R is good,K is evil. Boooring.
Curly hair guy, his story arch was pointless, I don’t remember his name. Purple hair lady was a god awful leader and I’m glad she’s dead (also don’t remember her name).
Finn sadly got stuck into another pointless story arch with that annoying, unimportant, tertiary character, Rose. I do remember her name just because of how incredibly shallow her character was. She RUINED his heroic suicide and then told him she loved him just before dying.... Like he met you not even a day ago you **** weirdo. GROSS. Special effects were top notch, even if some things were really out of place. Like those weird penguins and the red salt lake.
I did love the scene where ray touches the rock at the bottom of the island though. I Probably won’t go to watch the next one.

As a reference, I enjoyed TFA and was looking forward to see more development of the characters and storyline. This director decided to throw all that away and stamp his own flawed vision on the franchise. The writing at plot are a mess and there are so many plot holes it begs reasoning. The treatment of Luke in this films is unforgivable. The only reason i'm posting this opinion is that this director currently has more star wars movies slated to do, and Disney needs to take those away. Too much damage already done. Expand

The story at the end was predictable. I believe that this movie has killed Carrie Fisher, I would have a heart attack too after seeing this movie that I am in. I felt like I wasted $20 on this. I really wanted it to be the best movie because it is Star Wars. The fight and battle weren't intense enough. So focus on diversity, Asian and African American. Kylo being shirtless, eww, not sexy at all. Rey didn't really do anything. Seem like the Dark side won, the Light side just running away, should have listened to Poe Dameron. He seems to be more like Harrison Ford. He would have become a new friend with Chewbecca. Rian, don't mess with Star Wars anymore. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A subversion of tropes to the point where nothing matters

The Force Awakens, as safe, fan-servicing and nostalgia-based it was, made at least one thing right - it set the stage for next movies due to the mysteries it touched but didn't bother to explain. Who is Snoke? What ancient powerful being is he? Where did he hide all these years? Who are Rey's parents? Why did they leave her in the middle of a **** nowhere? Why is she so powerful quick learner in everything? Was she trained in the ways of the Force, but doesn't remember? Why Luke is gone? If he doesn't want to be bothered, why did he leave a map to his seclusion? Most of these questions constitute plot holes actually, and big parts of the TFA make sense only if next episodes explain it in a satisfactory way. Star Wars fans had a lot of material to speculate and craft sometimes crazy and head spinning theories. Which is good, since that gave hope that Sequel Trilogy may have some depth, smart plot-twists, and earned dramatic moments.
And here comes Rian Johnson with the Episode 8: The Last Jedi. Do you remember the final scene of the TFA, you know, that tense, shot from multiple angles scene, in which Rey's and Luke's facial expressions and body languages signalized that **** is serious? The very first scene set on that island in the TLJ is a direct continuation of that scene. What does Luke do, when Rey gives him the lightsaber? Throws it away like a an empty can. Shocking? Yeah, propably. Unexpected? You bet. But is it unexpected in a good way? Hell no. It's stupid, it's cheating, it's like writers didn't watch the TFA. It undermined the importance of everything what happened in the TFA that lead to the final scene. And it's only the beginning. Want to know who Snoke is? Nevermind, we kill the guy in the middle of the movie without hinting any backstory. Want to know who are Rey's parents? It doesn't matter, most propably nobody. And what about the map? What map? We have revised that story line, now it's Ressistance that sent Rey to Luke. That's propably the greatest sin of this movie - it dismisses it's own direct predecessor and throws away almost all hinges of the story set in the TFA, making the TFA nonsensical and pointless.

Characters are too dumb too frequently, inconsistent, or their actions are inconsequential anyway for the sake of the plot

Rey thought it's a good idea to go alone to the Snoke's ship and surrender in order to turn Kylo Ren. Did she think that they have so strong bond that she can do this alone? Even if she succeeds, how do they escape, if no rare event, like being hit by lightspeed bullet, occurs?
Snoke sets and exploits a force connection between his emotionally unstable apprentice and Rey to hunt down a hermit on a distant planet, who decided to wait for death in solitude anyway.
Admiral Holdo hides her plan from hot headed, known for authority questioning Poe Dameron, without other reason than to force Poe to mutiny.
Finn's and Rose's side quest is inconsequential at best or even makes things worse.
Leia knows better then we do that she's there only for an exposition.
Kylo Ren smashes an elevator with his helmet due to his emotional turmoil which he cannot hide and later proves himself a master of occlumency.

Nonsensical bits and pieces

TLJ also introduced a very dangerous way of destroying things in a very efficient way. Don't take me wrong, it's a great idea to make a bullet from ship with hyperdrive and just smash it against enemy's dreadnaught or flagship. It's desperate, it's spectular, it suits well the Rebels (erm... Ressistance). It's dangerous because it undermines every previous attempts to destroy big ships. It seems that no one needed to find a weak spots and make complicated plans to destroy, let's say, Death Stars or other spherical weapons of mass destruction, just one ship with a hyperdrive and working autopilot (or a crew willing to sacrifice) is enough.
In the first scene Ressistance is dropping bombs on the dreadnaught, defying laws of physics and established technological level.
Writers try to make a lot of unearned drama and tension. That random Asian woman sacrifices herself? Nobody cares, since the movie hasn't spent any time to get to know her. Admiral Holdo sacrifices herself? Nobody cares, since nobody likes her, she made stupid decisions, and her sacrifice should be unnecessary anyway. Finn sacrifeces himself? It would mean something, but Rose stops him in quasi-sacrifice. The love confession is hardly believable and even Finn is stunned.
Humour is immersion breaking and breaking the 4th wall too obnoxious.

Are there any redeeming qualities that movie has? Redeeming propably not, but visuals are outstanding, like they should in a modern blockbuster, camera work is great and it conveys emotions and point of views properly, music is, as always in Star Wars thanks to Williams, perfect. Unfortunatelly it doesn't help much in plot and character developement department.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's not a 1 star movie. Effects were good. I had a feeling that the new director did not actually like star wars, so he decided to kill of every notable character in the universe and start a new story that he has a full control over. Basically Starwars is over, now we will get Disney Wars, similar to avengers. Maybe they will do Star Wars meet Avengers next, knowing Disney this is exactly where this is going. Basically thank you Disney for ruining a time old classic... No one expected you to do better and you didn't. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie was BAD! What were they thinking. Well here are the things I didn't like.
The movie did not know when to end! I swear the final action was in the 3rd act then it just ended like we survived luke died let's go to are base. But when Luke died they were just like yeah I felt him die whatever, they did not even cry one tear. They did end with a lightsaber fight, but when Luke was cut in half by Kylo ren his body doesn't fall off it's just a holograph. How Luke actually dies is by killing himself. He jumped off the mountain. Why would he do that? The reason why Ben solo go's to the dark side is plain stupid. Luke tries to kill him cause he saw evil in him, but Kylo just tries to kill Luke then kills every student jeez. It was blatantly obvious rey was going to be the last Jedi. They don't do any twists and they act like rey is definitely going to be the last Jedi when they could make her act like a brat. The story is obvious. It's obvious Ben solo would kill snoak cause he wants to be in charge. This movie just sucks The things I liked. The characters where consistent the parts with Finn and rose are good Poe Dameron was good and the acting was fine.

I do believe that that Han Solo movie that is comming this year will break Star Wars nostalgia and we will finally see more realistic reviews from critics, not 8, 9, 10 but more realistically 5, 6, 7.

Or not, IGN 10/10 "timeless classic" (check please!)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So what do I think of the newest Star Wars adventure?

Fun to watch, but not great overall. And definitely the worst the Star Wars product Disney has put out so far.

The biggest problems with the movie can be divided into 2 categories: movie filler and character mismanagement.

The first major problems with the Last Jedi are pretty much universally agreed upon and there are few defenders.Trying to sit and watch this film makes the problem very clear. Seriously, there is at least 1 hour of useless plodding that contributes almost nothing to the movie. There is a good movie somewhere in all this footage. However you will have to sit 2 and 1/2 hours to see it.

And if you think that is bad you should see how it treats the original trilogy characters. The sin of legacy character mismanagement and just poor character writing is much more bothersome to me and other long time fans.

Luke, Leia, and even Chewbacca are poorly written and untrue to their portrayals in the original trilogy of Star Wars movies. This not only hurts the interest of fans in this movie but how people will now look at the Star Wars franchise as a whole. And Despite what the Holly-Wood writers say, the character portrayals aren't just fan complaints that need to be blown off. I imagine the long term financial prospects of The Last Jedi are hurt by this corporate decision making.

Luke is a weakly sarcastic humdrum Ebeneezer type character that is almost 180 degrees of difference in philosophy and morality. His backstory plot and his decision making for most of the film is very un-Luke Skywalker like. Yes there is a cool moment at the end of the film, but even here The Last Jedi disappoints. The one time that we actually get to see Luke get off his couch, take a shower, and actually help turns out to be a nothing but a mirage.

Spoilers,he literally turns out to be a mirage.

There are powerful moments for Mark Hamill to strut his acing ability, and there this film doesn't disappoint.Hamill has for decades proven himself one of them most capable actors in venues like dubbing animation, and audio plays. It is nice to see he gets a chance to shine.

However, we don't get the same opportunity to watch the usually funny and powerful late actress Carrie Fisher. Here Leia is indecisive, quiet and plays little into the decision making of the resistance when she does manage to speak. It is obvious that the footage they did get of the late awesome actress was much less than the PR Disney wanted us to believe. And this movie is all the poorer for it.

To make up for this, a new actress is cast to play the lines Fisher couldn't and it doesn't help much. The Purple Haired general is probably the most forgettable character for the amount of screen time given in this movie. A weak sub-plot involving her and the character Poe is not only boring, but nonsensical and riddled with plot holes. Even the great sacrifice this character makes is hard to watch and does little to redeem her.

I hope dear reader you noticed that I haven't yet nodded to the extremely strange and disbelief killing parts of this movie. In particular, the scene where we actually get to see Leia use the force turns out to be this weirdly whimsical resurrection in the style of Marry Poppins. Plus the time Luke milks an alien walrus, or Yoda helps Luke in a book burning. The last of which bothers me more than probably anything else.

No way in ewok hell would Yoda ever try to destroy the legacy of the Jedi nor authorize book burning of any kind. But this is exactly the thematic message that Star Wars know wants us to understand.

To quote Kylo Ren: "Let the past die. Kill it if you have to". Isn't that the same message that fascistic nations and dictators want their citizens to believe. If Hitler was in the theater I could imagine him giving a thumbs up.

I doubt I'll be able to sit-down and happily watch this film again in the same way I do for all of the other films. This movie really has damaged my love for the Star Wars franchise. The prequels which I overall enjoyed and often made fun of; never spat upon the legacy and beloved characters of the original trilogy. Jar Jar never took away from the dynamic story and character that is Luke Skywalker. This movie does, and does it with pride.

Yet I still recommend most people to go see Star Wars: The Last Jedi. It is a visually stunning film, and the Rey/Kylo Ren storyline is entertaining and thought provoking; even if it concludes with the wrong sentiment. Just be prepared to wait 2 1/2 hours to see it, and know coming in that you will hate what they do to the old Star Wars crew.

If you can stomach all that the let the Force be with you. (as if I could of ended with anything else ;0)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Instead of good vs bad, we have a movie of Dumb and Dumber.
The only interest plot is between, Luke(Dies), Rey, Kylo and Snoke (also dies very quickly). Other than this 4 characters, every other character in the movie failed to demonstrate any sign of intelligence, regardless they are on the side of First Order or the Resistance. General HUX and several other First Order officers had multiple easy opportunities to crush the rebellion, they would not take advantage on any of them. While several attempts of escape by the Resistance were thwarted by, not the First Order, but other Resistance members. Disney/Lucasfilms and director Rian Johnson want to move the franchise to a new direction, but failed to deliver a logical story on one of the two main lines of the plot. Furthermore, they paid very little regard to the fact that this is second movie of a trilogy, and 8th of 9 movies chronicle. "Let past dies, kill them if you have to" echos both inside the plot-line and out in the franchise's business direction. What they did is surprising, but none truly is a "Shocker". If they are bald enough to turn Rey to the dark side when Kylo offered alliance to her, I would respect that and be genuinely intrigued on the next movie. But as it stands, I have not developed any emotional connection with Poe, Finn or Rose; nor any fear or hatred toward Hux. Rey and Kylo is just the light-side girl tired to turn the dark-side boy and failed, so she will either try again or kill him in the final movie, that would not motivate me for Ep 9.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Not a bad movie, but ultimately really hurt to watch as a long-time Star Wars fan. Instead of expanding the universe and focusing on the excellent characters JJ Abrams gave us in the previous film, Rian Johnson's movie becomes totally preoccupied with subverting expectation. It's cute at first when the film surprises you, but as the film went on I found myself asking, "but where is the movie?" I wanted more. I wanted an interesting universe and for the events of the previous film to have some kind of weight. I wanted the ridiculously charismatic John Boyega to have more to do than some throwaway B-plot that had no consequence on the story with a character nobody cares about (not Kelly Marie Tran's fault — she was as good as possible given the role). I wanted to know who Snoke was. I wanted to see Luke as more than a broken old man. I wanted to know who or what the Knights of Ren were.

The best part of this movie was the dynamic between Rey and Kylo. Everything else left me cold.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This film had some great moments and some awful moments, unfortunately the awful outweighed the good. I went in with high expectations due to my love of Star Wars and because of my high confidence in Rian Johnson. I was left disappointed due to a weak plot and dragged out unnecessary storylines for Finn, Rose and Poe. Rose and Holdo were bad characters with weak dialogue and did not feel as if they fitted in with the rest of the film. I enjoyed Luke's storyline up until the end as I thought he would be given a chance to redeem himself. His death (or becoming one with the force) at the end left me very frustrated, as this was not a worthy ending for one of the most iconic characters in pop culture.
However film wasn't all bad as the storylines and characterisations for both Rey and Kylo Ren were great. Kylo is quickly becoming what Anakin should have been in the prequels. Adam Driver's performance is incredible and he makes Kylo's struggle between the light and dark very genuine. Daisy Ridley also gives a good performance and helps develop Rey into a much more fleshed out character. Overall this film left me disappointed at Lucasfilm/Disney and Rian Johnson for their lack of respect for Luke Skywalker and to the classic Star Wars fans. However the film was not all terrible as it did expand on the two most important characters in the new trilogy.

After my viewing, the film left me with plenty to think about, so I went online to find critical and audience responses. What I found interested me: there was a significant disconnect between the reaction the vocal fans of the Star Wars franchise and that of the professional critics who reviewed TLJ. With few exceptions, the critical response to TLJ has been very positive. The fan’s consensus however, has been ambivalent at best. Some more outspoken among that latter camp have derided the movie as a, “Hate letter to fans,” or have posted volgs titled, “The Rot at The Core of Star Wars.” Looking into the causes of this disparity, I find that many authors posit that the longtime fanbase—predominantly white males—feel threatened by the large number of prominent women and nonwhite characters featured in the cast. While in many cases this is true, (I recall an IMDB audience review that labeled newcomer Rose as, “Positive Body Image Girl,”) I find it a shallow and dismissive theory in most cases. When I viewed Last Jedi, I saw a film that was exciting and mechanically excellent with only a handful of visual miscues. At the same time, I saw a film that is nowhere near as socially progressive and empowering as it gets credit for and it squanders every possible opportunity to depict a better, more exciting story. I was disappointed with what they did with Luke. Mark Hamill did a great job with what he was given. The Finn and Rose plot line was a waste and felt forced. The kiss was stupid. However the story is a mix of uninspired and boring. Neither of which are even remotely good.
Narrative-
The narrative of this movie is the same as episode 5. Just as how episode 7 was like episode 4. A new Jedi goes to another planet to learn from a master to become stronger with the force, then they leave to go help their friends. That is the narrative of episode 5 and 8. If you spend a while looking into it you will only find more parallels. In fact the only significant change to narrative is the casino storyline, (which I won't spoil) which sucks. It tries to make you care about characters you just really don't and it amounts to nothing. This could be a normal length, not original but enjoyable still movie, however the casino just seems like they had to do something with John Boyega to remind you his character still existed. It is bad on that front. Visuals-
This movie has my favourite visual aesthetics of a Star Wars movie to date. The planet, Crait, at the end is just awesome. Its like a huge salt flat with red dust under the surface, making a stunning visual filled with contrast of colours. Also the casino is very interesting looking, despite being useless.
Audio-
Its Star Wars audio. Its pretty cool.

To finish this review, I have to disclose that I'm not the biggest fan of the series. I have no investment into this series particularly like so many others do so thats why I can excuse some of the things like how they use Luke Skywalker as a character. However the story is just not good for a movie that should be this epic. In fact the only way I could tell that this movie was epic was from its visuals which were spectacular. However I still wouldn't go to see it again, or recommend it to non-fans of the series. It has positives but it is still a below average film.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I came out of Star Wars The Last Jedi full of excitement and joy, but the more I sit and think about it the more I feel robbed. The trailers for The Last Jedi were promising a dark dramatic film where Luke Skywalker is broken and conflicted with himself and on the verge of insanity, Rey is shown asking Kylo Ren to show her her place in this world taking his hand in the First Order...NONE OF THAT HAPPENED. Instead, the film begins like a Saturday morning cartoon where General Hux(who was an intimidating and powerful character in The Force Awakens)is receiving crank calls from Poe Dameron(who also is very different in this film). The main plot pretty much consists of the slowest high speed chase in film history between The Resistance and The First Order, which is very disappointing because Rey and Luke’s arc which is what the film is named after is taking a backseat to a space janitor(Finn)and a maintenance worker(Rose)flying around the galaxy with some dude named “DJ” trying to destroy a tracker. REALLY??? Throughout the first and second act Rey is attempting to get Luke to return and help the Resistance “Light The Spark That Will Burn The First Order Down” and also trying to figure out who her parents are on the side. This arc was very important in The Force Awakens and is literally thrown down the drain with Rey admitting that she knew who her parents were the whole time. Drunks. WHY??? If the Star Wars Saga is supposed to focus on The Skywalker Family then why is Rey so heavily focused on? She even goes so far as to fall in some pointless “Darkside Pit” and have some trippy dream, all to add up to nothing. Most of the characters in The Last Jedi are treated very poorly with a few exceptions. Snoke, who was another character who was built up so much in The Force Awakens is easily killed by Kylo Ren when he is teased to turn to the light, which was also for nothing rendering Snoke’s death pointless. Poe Dameron is perceived as some dimwitted “Blow Everything Up Pilot”, who disobeys even the simplest direct orders. Carrie Fisher(RIP)does a terrible job as Admiral Leia, delivering her lines like a robot. Not to mention that she's not dead? Are they just going to have a CGI Leia for the entirety of Episode Nine? The film is also way too crowded, Maz Kanata shows up for 30 seconds and has no purpose whatsoever. Yoda shows up as a force ghost to try and get Lukes head back in the game, at first I was blown away with surprise and happiness to see them using the original puppet, but now I realize that there was again literally no point of his cameo because Luke doesn't listen to him anyway. Captain Phasma is heavily advertised in the trailers and merchandise and is killed off less than 5 minutes into her appearance. The moments in this film that were full of potential and promise were quickly shot down with unneeded puns and goofs, Luke tickles Rey with a leaf telling her The Force is trying to connect with her, Kylo Ren tries to persuade Rey with his abs and every time there is a cool moment a Porg appears out of nowhere and does something stupid usually with slapstick comedy. Sadly, there are little to no action sequences in this film and literally not one, NOT ONE lightsaber duel. And of course the film builds one up, teases it and you guessed it; doesn't deliver. Not only does it not deliver, it gives the film an excuse to needlessly kill off Luke Skywalker. Nevertheless, The Last Jedi isn't all bad, the cinematography is amazing and Rian Johnson delivers some stunning visuals. There is a JAW-DROPPING flashback with an Evil Luke Skywalker trying to kill A Pre-Kylo Ren Ben Solo. The Set Pieces are spectacular, especially Snoke’s Liar which is home to the Amazingly-Choreographed “Red Room Battle” In the end, Star Wars The Last Jedi is not a perfect film, in fact, it has a lot of problems with the script and not being as it seems. But, it still is an entertaining film that never gets boring thanks to easy flowing pacing and delivers some very cool and surprising moments. Expand

Does nothing to further the previous movies set ups, or set up next movie. Killed all the momentum Star was had. Does not have the Star Wars magic. Did nothing to further the Star Was mythology. Full of gotcha moments instead of creative ideas, and story telling. This is a movie that does not understand itself. As bad as the first two prequels. Also, this movie has aged very poorly. Least rewatch able Star Was movie along with ATOC. Missed opportunity! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. OMG i'm stunned like in shock. WTF where Disney thinking and how could Mark Hamill read that script and agree to it is money really worth it its like you sold your soul to the Devil Mark shame on you. Even my childhood hero can be corrupted by money! And Kathleen Kennedy and Rian Johnson i have no words its like you purposely set out to destroy the greatest movie series ever with you SJW BS and the liberal leftist propaganda just forcing it down peoples throats that's why Donald Trump won because the ordinary person is just sick of it! Princess Leia is now a General cause of course woman can be Generals as well(in real life no woman has ever been a General BTW). And you wait 40 years to see Luke all mighty God powerful, instead he's some old loser lives in a cave and rejects the Jedi's. Oh and Han Solo is portrayed as a dead beat dad in TFA must just be a coincidence all our role models are made to look like loser straight white males. Kylo Ren looks and acts terrible. Who's Rey's parents who was Snoke, we don't know cause you never told us. Finn is terrible and of all the Asian actresses they pick a overweight hero feminist who kisses the black man, and Rey kisses the black man Finn as well so it ticks a lot of boxes. The casino scene is a clear dig at Capitalism i mean the politics are just out of control. In the next Star Wars movie I know what happens so I don't have to watch it. Chewbacca gets a sex change and is now called Chewniqua and Lando Calrissian comes back to protest out in the street about the evil Empire and the Stormtrooper's brutality. General Leia flies out of her grave and becomes President of the Galaxy and we all live happily ever after in peace now a woman's in charge. Shame on you Disney you are a disgrace to the Movie business and the Star Wars legacy. And too all the kids, you have been born in the worst time in history and this is a result of people like me sitting back and saying nothing while liberals have taken control and seek to destroy everything about our way of life. For that I humbly apologise. Expand

Many good scenes, but muddled by lack of focus. There's just too much going on to be a solid story. Character decisions and motivations were also particularly confusing on multiple occasions. Also, the final act is particularly cringe worthy, much of it undeserved. I guess if you're really into star wars, watch it, but it is not a quality movie experience on its own. Expand

What could go(Originally written on 12/17/17) I was ecstatic about seeing this film. It had amazing trailers and an incredible director leading the project, Rian Johnson, who made a Sci-Fi film back in 2012 called Looper, which I loved. What could go wrong? This film centers around the Resistance, which is somehow struggling after they just destroyed the First Order’s main base in the previous movie. The whole movie is about the Resistance attempting to escape the grasp of the first order while they hunt them down with their “merciless fleet” and that they need Luke Skywalker to help them. Before I rip this movie to shreds, let’s talk about the positives. One positive that I can say with absolute certainty is how great the special effects are. This movie has some of the best space battle and ground battle sequences of all the Star Wars movies. They are masterfully shot, edited, and designed. The CGI is very believable here and is the best of all of the movies. The acting is also very commendable. Mark Hamill gives his best performance as Luke Skywalker out of all of the movies and Daisy Ridley also gives a very committed and emotional performance as Rey. The real show stealer, however, is Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, which really surprised me. I wasn’t sure about him as the main villain in The Force Awakens, but here he has completely sold me. His transition from emo wannabe Darth Vader to a damaged, hate-filled and sinister man was amazing and he has convinced me that he can be a very strong main villain. His scenes with Rey are some of the best scenes in the movie. Now, the part I’ve been looking forward to the least, are the things about this movie that utterly angered me the most. There are a lot of plot holes in this movie, but the one that angered me the most basically is the backbone of the movie and is the only reason the events in this movie are even taking place. I don’t consider this a spoiler since it is established early on in the film. This plot hole can be summed up into three words, “out of range.” The only reason the First Order fleet isn’t able to destroy the Resistance ship is because they are too far away from it to shoot at it without hitting their shields. Are… are you serious? You have a whole fleet at your disposal, with thousands of tie fighters and other ships, and you can’t catch one ship that is running low on fuel and is completely vulnerable to attack? Just send a bunch of tie fighters out to it, or do a small light-speed jump to get right behind its ass and then blow it to kingdom come, or call in some of your dreadnots that you claim are “fleet-killers.” The Resistance in the beginning of the movie killed “a” dreadnought, not “the” dreadnought. Another downfall of this movie is the pacing. It is holy inconsistent. The first half of this movie feels like it was put together and edited by an unpaid intern. Nothing connects or flows together well at all. It reminded me of Batman V. Superman, and that’s never good. In fact, the first half of this movie besides the first action sequence is god awful in general. The dialogue is bad, the writing is bad, the directing is bad, and the pacing, like I said, is all over the place. The rest of my complaints delve into spoiler territory, so I am warning you. **********SPOILER WARNING********** A scene that infuriated, and continues to infuriate me, is a scene involving Princess Leia using the force in a very stupid and contrived way. In this scene, Kylo Ren is about to kill his mother, Princess Leia, but decides not to. Instead, two tie fighters converge on either side of him and blast Leia into space, where she proceeds to do one of the most ridiculous things I have ever seen in a Star Wars movie. In the middle of space, with no suit or oxygen mask or anything of the sort, she magically flies back to the ship using the force and she survives. What….the...f*** is all I can say. Possibly one of the worst sub-plots in Star Wars history also exists in this movie. The sub-plot involves Finn and a woman named Rose who go to a Casino on another world to find a code breaker who will help disable the First Order’s trackers so their ship can jump to lightspeed and escape the First Order without them tracking the Resistance. The whole sub-plot, however, is completely inconsequential to the events of the movie and doesn’t even need to exist. This is because the Resistance chooses to go with the Vice-Admiral’s plan anyways. This was about 30 minutes wasted of an already overly long runtime of 2 hours and 32 minutes. Although there is a lot that angers me about this movie, there is also a lot that I love about this movie, ie. the dynamic between Kylo and Rey, all of the scenes with Luke, Luke’s beautiful death, the amazing special effects, and the well done action sequences. Overall, though, this movie is incredibly disappointing and I am going to give Star Wars: The Last Jedi a 4/10 Expand

This review is probably going to get shuffled into the other reviews, but for those reading, this movie is not good. Lets start with the positive; the visuals. This movie has some of the best visuals of the Star Wars franchise, and it is probably one of the best looking movies of all time. But the rest of the film is not very good. The characters have changed for the worse, it is riddled with plot holes and things that don't make sense, and it is full of awkward moments as this film desperately wants to be Marvel. This film is mostly harmless, but they really messed up the characters in this one, especially Luke. This kinda breaks continuity with the rest of the franchise. This is not a good movie, it destroyed the Star Wars franchise, and there is little chance of redemption from Episode IX. Expand

On top of that the directors attitude outside of the movie is honestly just awful, you can deride the fans all you want for their behaviour but at the end of the day Rian is supposed to be the professional and he doesn't act like it. Clearly the man can't write, he should stick to his skills as a cinematographer instead as he is very good in that regard. Expand

Directing - F.
Felt like the movie was directed by a 10 year old kid who has ADD.

Acting - C.
Some characters are new and don't do anything and/or what is there purpose. Acting is nothing good - nothing bad just average.

Editing - F.
The movie should have ended at least 15-20 minutes earlier if not more. The pace of this movie is terrible.

Musical Score - B.
Keeps with the tradition of previous Star Wars films.

Special Effects - A.
Great blend of CGI with practical effects. Some of the best in a movie. Along with costume design and make-up.

Cinematography/Production Design - A.
Well done. Looks clean and a well made film.

Overall Score - 4.3/10
Too bad the production, Special Effects, Musical Score, Costume Design and Make-up are not the heart and soul of a movie. In those categories; some of the best ever for a movie. However, it lacks a comprehensive and organize story, new characters one may not care about; along with no character development, poor directing and bad editing; that in the end makes this the worst Star Wars film to date.

It is not as cringy as I expected. I was pretty sure I would be giving it a 3 instead of a 4 based on what I had heard. I certainly wouldn't pay money to watch any of these new Disney or Marvel movies. It was tempting to give it a zero because the Star Wars franchise was obviously hijacked to push a politically correct agenda, but I'm reviewing the movie--not the intentions.

Pros:

Nothing really stands out as a pro other than some aspects of the brief appearance by Yoda and some aspects of Luke's actions at the end.

Cons:

The bad guys are lead by men, and the good guys are led by women.
The bad guys are white, and the good guys are diverse.
The women leaders are military leaders.
Yet another movie that feels it must show us role models of women leading other women in a healthy manor in order to help real women overcome their natural tendency to not get along with each other ... while omitting such relationships and role models for men.
The men are like kids and the women are like wise mothers.
The men are usually wrong and unstable.
Prominently shows that even the main two good men still don't respect women enough.
Rey is a Mary Sue as always (though not as much of a Mary Sue as in The Force Awakens).
Rey continues to have zero personality.
Rey and most of the other characters show zero signs of having a sexuality.
The token black guy is a coward again ... trying to run away ... again.
One of the women sacrificed her life to stop one of the men from sacrificing his life just as he was seconds away from saving all of them ... because that wasn't his call ... but apparently it was her call?
One of the women leaders instantly and conveniently developed the ability to fly through space without a ship or even a suit, which seemed as dumb as it sounds.

The movie kept doing stupid unexpected things for no apparent reason other than to be unpredictable. We are supposed to believe that the lady admiral who reminds us of a new-age book store clerk is so strategically brilliant that she thought of a really obvious new way to use hyperspace that no one in this universe ever thought of before, which is just asinine, but which is doubly asinine because no characters could have thought of it before because it broke the rules of how hyperspace works in Star Wars and in the entire sci-fi genre.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My viewing of The Last Jedi was constantly polluted by cringe. It could have been a great movie. Empire was my favorite installment of the Star Wars saga. The second film in a trilogy is where things can get weird and norms can be broken. I can see that this was Johnson's intention, but the film feels cramped and forced. Last Jedi felt like an indie movie stuffed into blockbuster pacing, which just doesn't match up. I enjoyed the subtlety of Ridley's story line, but the moral messaging of the Finn/Rose plot and the Po/Holdo plot were so beat-you-over-the-head straight forward that I had troubles taking them seriously. Besides, I'm not sure I love the message of Holdo. I know that it was meant to read as "trust women," which I will always get behind, but it read more as "blindly follow orders and complacently accept a lack of transparency." It feels so militaristic, running against the pro-democratic messaging of the entire Saga. The dialogue in Star Wars has always been a little odd, but, other than Driver and Ridley, the cast of Last Jedi couldn't pull it off like Fischer, Hamill or Ford. If I ever hear "master codebreaker" again, I will have a psychotic episode. The humor of the movie got laughs from disinterested parents brought to the theater by their kids, but was nothing more than cringey gags. I missed the sarcasm and blissful camp of the original trilogy. Expand
