This movie had a lot of really great pieces as well as some awkward ones. Overall, it just didn't quite come together to make the same quality movie as The Force Awakens and Rogue One.

POSITIVES

- Mark Hamill and Adam Driver absolutely killed it with their acting. They pretty much singlehandedly saved the movie from being a 4-5 for me.

- The plot is original. Those who complained that TFA was basically A New Hope should not be disappointed like that again.

- Cinematography and special effects were top notch. In particular, a certain space scene and a lightsaber fight were some highlights.

NEGATIVES

- There were certain things added that were clearly just meant to sell toys. They did nothing to advance the plot or develop characters (if you've seen the trailer, you'll know what I mean).

- Certain "main" characters were either: bland, served no purpose, and/or were shoehorned in.

- Despite an original plot, there were some crazy plot-holes and things that just didn't make sense.

- It was very jarring, tone-wise. Massive scenes of death and destruction were broken up by BB-8 doing goofy things and other characters giving Tony Stark-esque one-liners.

- Rian Johnson took JJ's foundation and just tossed it aside, for the most part. OVERALL

- This is a decent movie. Certainly worth going to see. Some of the acting and special effects were fantastic. The plot was fine for the most part. However, I'm more concerned going forward on how this film will affect the quality of the next film.

I had a lot of fun watching it but I cant help but feel it was a misfire on the whole. The Force Awakens was a complete remake of Ep. 4 but i am gonna be totally honest. I like FA better then this film. I definitely was more excited when i left the theater 2 years ago that's for sure. This movie felt like it should be ep.9, there really seems like there is nothing to look forward too in the final film of this trilogy. Too much humor in the wrong places, Finn and Rose's adventure was totally pointless, Phasma, Again was wasted in this film!! I really liked Mark Hamill's performance and Carrie Fisher was good too. Just too many plot holes, too many unanswered questions from FA and some totally unexpected things that happen and close the book on characters and story that leave you hanging or feeling underwhelmed. Special Effects were incredible, Space battles were great and there is one cool light-saber battle but (minor spoiler here), you will be very disappointed at the number of times 2 light-sabers actually touch. This isn't a terrible film at all but its just not a really great Star Wars movie :-( I am really looking forward to JJ Abrams doing ep 9 and i never thought id say that lol Expand

So if you are not that into Star Wars, you will have a good moment and you'll enjoy this movie. But as a huge fan of Star Wars, I'm a bit worried. Like the VII, this movie doesn't add some interesting facts to the SW universe, and many question asked in the VII are still unanswered: Knights of Ren? Origins of Snoke? Moreover even if it's better done than in the VII, there are still copied-pasted scenes from the original trilogy: there is the equivalent of Hoth, Obi-Wan's death, The Emperor and Darth Vador vs Luke, the elevator from episode VI, rebels'escape from Hoth, the cave from Dagobah... and that's so sad. When will Disney offer us a new Star Wars? But with RO and episode VIII, they took more risks. Maybe IX will be a true SW, but isn't it too late? Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Didn't feel the movie was all bad, just not as amazing as it's being painted. BAD:

The writers gave no respect to any of the iconic or new secondary characters, except for Rosa, and the reason for that is painfully obvious. It feels someone at Disney has put out a death warrant on all original characters (out with the old, in with the lame?). Truth be told, I never liked Rey so much, I just can't reconcile her being so amazing with STILL NO TRAINNING NOR NOTIONS ABOUT THE FORCE. Yeah Anakin killed a super destroyer when he was a kid, but that was the pre-craps. First order has way better equipment, which is so much bigger and better than the empire in its apex, to the point of being dysphoric (why do you really need super giant AT-AT's? No really, why? The original ones weren't killing people fast enough? The notion of resistance/rebellion is all over the place, its as if they really just gave up mid-screenplay and just started using them interchangeably. It really doesn't matter though, there's like 6 or 7 left of them anyway (what a massacre)

The movie goes from full on massacre/pseudo guerrilla weird to full on philosophical treatise, at 2.5 hours, can't think of how they can market it for kids Good but Meh

Finn, finally getting some love on the writing side, great chemistry with everyone, especially between Rosa and him. I put him here because his quest is worse than pointless, actually DETRIMENTAL to the Resistance/Rebellion.

Leia and Luke, love them, just the best. Its unforgivable just how little time they spend together. Regardless, they both shine in every way (though the script doesn't do them justice)

Good

Kylo Ren is less emo, more Sith on this one, pretty good development for the character. Daisy Ridley/Rey shine when interacting with him. Worthy bad guy now

Awesome visuals, great music Porgs are not given so much screen time

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'll start my review by saying that in my opinion I feel like most of the more viscerally negative reactions to the movie are because it's a Star Wars movie, specifically the direct sequel to the widely successful and loved Episode 7 and spiritual successor to the most beloved Star Wars to this point Empire. Despite the fact that my inner nerd took exception to a lot of decisions in this movie, the really cool scenes are on par with some of the best and most iconic scenes in the franchise, and as a whole I enjoyed it more than I didn't. I honestly feel like if not for Episode VII and really liking the story/character threads that it started to sew, I'd like this movie a lot more.

There seemed to be a lot of hubbub about how much Episode VII seemed to mirror Episode IV. It's a fair criticism but I personally enjoyed that aspect of it. This movie feels like when they first started working on it they would continue to acknowledge a similar progression mirroring certain plot points of the original trilogy while gearing the future of the franchise toward the new characters. The first act will make you feel right at home if you're a fan of the original trilogy as the movie starts out pretty strong. Toward the end of the first act leading into the second though it feels almost as if Rian got cold feet based on the aforementioned "hubbub" .I feel like they spent the rest of the movie doing one of two things: 1. Rushing through the Empire and even Jedi callbacks through so they could move on from the comparisons and 2. Completely dismissing a lot of potentially interesting plot points and mysteries from Episode VII.

Mystery behind Snoke and who he is exactly? Dead. Rushed through the mirroring to the ending of Empire to essentially get it, despite a kick ass fight scene afterward. Finn's character arc (and placement as a co-star really) seems to get completely rebooted in favor of having him go through it again via some whacky side adventure that ultimately means nothing. Kylo torn on which "side of the force" he should be on, something that's touched on multiple times in the first act? Now the new supreme leader, tossing aside the Vader character arc hinted at through the first movie and a half. Toss in the fact that after one or two short training sessions with Luke that suddenly Rey's a pro with the force as opposed to Luke's amateurish familiarity with it after training with Yoda, and the tease that you might see Luke raise his again crashed-in-the-water X-Wing never shown on screen and there are so many missed opportunities.

Toss in a half baked spy/code cracker character with a really bizarre stuttering problem making points about the ethics about either side of a war that never goes anywhere and is negated by how **** the First Order is shown to repeatedly be, a blooming Finn/Rey chemistry that's been building for the better part of two movies that looks like it's suddenly tossed aside at the end with Poe Dameron suavely introducing himself to Rey just in time before the movie ends, Leia becoming some sort of space ghost jedi rather than using this as an opportunity to give Carrie Fisher the send off she deserves and Luke Skywalker coming up with a brilliant plan to stall Kylo Ren at the end without actually giving him the satisfaction of killing him only to die anyways, and this movie turns from a solid popcorn flick into a little bit of a conflicted mess that leaves me thinking this movie could've been so much more.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all, this movie doesn't deserve a 1 or 3 like some butthurt fanboys are giving. It has really bad moments but there are also breathtaking scenes, both direction-wise as fan service wise.

The reason why I didn’t like TLD that much: the movie basically said f*ck you to everything that episode VII and JJ Abrams was setting up.
Rey is a nobody, so what was the point of the force vision in TFA, why should I care about her? Snoke’s plot was a big thing for me. He had SO MUCH potential, if Rian Johnson cut the crappiest part of the movie (act 2 in that casino-like planet and that PETA bs with the Chinese Jar Jar) and gave us a flashback showing Snoke’s past, who is he, how he recruited Kylo and made him go to the Dark Side, why was he so powerful, how he build the First Order from the reminiscents of the Empire. WE GOT NOTHING. Absolutely NOTHING. They killed Snoke in his second REAL appaearance in both episodes VII and VIII. Come on guys! You have **** Andy Serkis, a true legend and that’s all we got? Really? It seemed like Rian just wanted to clean up all of JJ Abrams work in TFA. It was a huge disappointment.
Now all I see is a very predictable plot in ep XIX. To be honest, I really don’t see that much material left to work with.
TLJ was a huge mess with some very good moments, like Yoda’s appearance, Luke’s last moment, the space battles, Poe’s character development, Rey’s relation with Luke, the cinemaography, this is hands down a gorgeous movie, and the best looking Star Wars. it introduces poorly developed characters that have no story at all instead of focusing on the characters TFA already established and needed further development (Snoke, Mas, Phasma, Hux, etc.). Instead of that horrible casino sequence, instead of Rose and DJ, why not try to develop more characters Rian already had? I would have love to see Mas’s story, her place in all of this, how she found Luke’s lightsaber. Phasma’s presence, once again, was useless.
Commander Holdo was a very good addition to the Star Wars movies, she was incredibly charismatic and I could perfectly see her replacing Leia’s post in ep XIX, being the leader that the Resistance needed so much and honoring Carrie Fisher’s legacy, but no, they killed her right away.

I got out of the session with mixed feelings, and I still need to rewatch it for a second time, but this is my opinion for now.

Star Wars The Last Jedi Review

To begin this review I will first off say that I did not hate the movie, there are some aspects I found enjoyable but this movie overall is a mixed bag. Researching some of the aspects behind the scenes are beginning to make more sense. The Good
A handful of shots are incredible and iconic in their look.
The Rey and Kylo dynamic becomes intimately stronger.

The Bad
Charaters and characterization are completely disregarded.
Lackluster anticlimactic ending.
The entire film is inconsequential, ultimately serving little purpose in the overarching story. (Mind you thats with the death of 5+ substantial characters.)
Messy writing with plot holes throughout. Beyond those bullet points I can say this is a very mixed movie that “is not going to go the way you think” but let us examine why that is. Currently the climate towards any SW fan saying they didn’t love this movie seems to be that expectations are unattainably high, or that the film didn’t unfold the way you would have preferred and similar. Personally I find that largely inaccurate, my dislike of this film has nothing to do with the movie not being what I wanted it to be though the film seems to be disappointing to many. Rain Johnson takes existing character development and essentially throws it out and in many cases leaving confused characterizations to remain. Many characters feel more like a Spaceballs counterpart than anything. Humor is at a Prequel level of childish and forced. Dialogue is mostly poor sans a few good moments and the flow of the movie is all over the place. I like practically everybody didn’t like the Casino scene whatsoever and could have done without Finn, Rose and DJ even being in this movie. Luke is inconsistent and changes his demeanor abruptly but ultimately Luke serves no purpose in this film other than stalling Kylo. Really this film is largely a waste of time, I’ve seen it twice and returned tickets to see it any further, it just doesn’t give you any real substance other than the Kylo Rey dynamic. Rain Johnson wanted to make a Space Samurai movie and that he has done in style. Reports are than Johnson wouldn’t agree to do this film unless he could throw out Lawrence Kasdans draft and do his own thing. This was a major mistake on Lucasfilms part. The original trilogy worked so well with 3 directors because the story was all coming from the same source, same with Harry Potter, and ALL other movie franchises. This movie is ultimately a misstep that I have no doubt will become a financial and receptive disaster. Rian Johnson your overly cockiness and ego got the best of you.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First, my Eng isn't perfect. Second, i'm not going to follow mindless wave of people, who give away 0-2 raitings. And third, this movie disappointed me. I don't expect people find my review "helpful" since i haven't left 0 raiting. I left 6 because i enjoyed picture and action. I saw good acting from Mark Hammil and Adam Driver (I'm not kidding, i like Kylo Ren in this movie). Sadly, these are the only good traits about this movie. If touching bad side of movie, then we're about to go deep:
1) Wasted characters. My greatest trouble with this movie and source of my complete disappointement. What was the point of foreshadowing Rey's parents identety, to throw it away? I cannot dig this stuff. Same goes for Snoke. Who was he? How he obtained such power (He was doing some creppy stuff in movie and it looked good)? Did he know Emperor and what happened to him? You'll never find this out in this movie... Because he's killed in last third of the film. Cpt. Phasma... well.. she's in this movie. Not going to talk about, how sad i was when i saw what you did with Luke.
2) Pointless subplot with Finn and Rose. What was the point of it? Watch naruto and one piece a lot? "Great idea, let's throw this filler, to make our picture longer". No! This plot serves to show anything except pull us away from interesting stuff with Rey, Ben and Luke
3) 5-th and 6-th reimagining (Sorry, if spelled wrong). Movie rips out scenes from episodes i mentioned above and throws them in movie, to... make it hard to watch, really. The pace is crazy. First it boring, then it's fun. Next it's long, then it's interesting. After it goes good climactic scene and more slow paced action. Long say short. It's a mess It's hard to describe my point in eng, i hope you understood
4) Don't you think Rey's rock lifting scene would be better if we saw at least hint of her training in force using? She uses the force to lift huge pile of rocks, because scenario needs it. That's a bad way to go with characters. (May i recieve huge amount of dislikes, but i like this character. I just don't agree that she has to be too overpowered. I'd love her more if you gave us something so we can cheer for her)
5) Some complete **** in this movie. I know we talking about fairytale where sounds could be heared in space and force can do anything, you only have to try. But... excuse me, if i find some scenes like speedlight charge, causing destruction of third part of **** and Leia flying in space aka superman, ridiculous. And... force ghosts always could use force to affect real world?
6) Music. It sounds great, don't get me wrong... but there's nothing new added to new film. And even if added, it's completely forgetable. (For the record, i like March of the Resistance and Theme of Rey)

Thouse are bad stuff in this movie. Action was good, picture great, story... meh. And i wouldn't say anything if this was from marvel, but it isn't! I like how director wanted to show new abilities force can do, though some of their realisation were questionable. I won't be pointing it out, cause i'm tired typing. I don't expect a lot of people find my article helpful. I hope i find thouse who agree with me, even if their number not huge. I'm going to pray for good future for star wars universe, but for now i pick neutral side. I won't compare this movie to trash, but i ain't defending it either

Last Jedi is certainly a polarized movie at different levels, I am bit surprised that critics gave such an excellent rate, perhaps they don’t like to criticize or diminish the quality of Disney’s work by some mysterious reasons. I feel that if you want a heroine to be the star of this movie perhaps Disney can consider a female director that would be more in tune with Rey’s character like Patty Jenkis did for Wonder Woman. I'm not a big fan of Star Wars. None of the previous movies are great, but none of them are bad either. All are sometimes entertaining and beautiful but flawed and uneven.

The Last Jedi has more attempt at humour than previous entries, but the humour falls flat, it feels forced and jarring, and I didn't find myself laughing or even grinning. Those furry Porgs have nothing to do with the plot, rather they are there to be cute and funny and most likely are meant to sell plush toys. Visually they *are* well done as are other creatures, but those creatures are not in the background at the edges of the scene where they should be. Visuality has always been Star Wars' strong point; beautiful vistas and grand spaceships on fire, but here the island and the salt plain are the only visually striking settings, everything else is just a muddle of places that I just can't remember anymore.

Mark Hamill is great as Luke, but the rest of the cast can't really compare to the likes of Harrison Ford, Alec Guinness, Liam Neeson or Evan McGregor.

I like this new approach it makes with it (the Force), which I think builds a track for future SW movies. Almost all my questions from The Force awakens have been answered, and I'm glad for that, but I feel the film is TOO LONG, and there are TOO MANY characters, just like in the Avengers movies, and some of them are disappointing as a result. Despite the action scenes are great, in the first place I feel like there are plotlines that are unnecessary and only make the movie longer, but i'll wait and see how it translates in the third movie. I have also missed some more lightsaber battles, which I hope reappear in episode IX, and a better character developement and death selection. It raises new questions for the last movie of the trilogy and I can't wait to watch it. Expand

If "Force Awakens" (which I liked) fell too much on the "same" side of the equation, this film falls a bit too much for me on the side of being "different," to the point where it often doesn't feel like a Star Wars movie. But I doubt most of us (myself included) could have done any better if we had somehow been put in charge.

The best Star Wars movies, even in their darkest moments, had an element of hope of them. There was fun and joy in them. This film, from director-writer Rian Johnson, often feels too bleak and cynical to be enjoyed. (It's very much in line with "Looper," another film by Johnson.) So, respectfully, I have to say this movie isn't for me.

The good:
Music, visuals and special effects were great with only few minor exceptions

The neutral:
Humor (sometimes too forced and not fitting the situation, but some jokes were amusing - probably depends on your taste)
Trying to have a diverse cast including extras felt a little forced and as a really large jump from previous movies
Felt small-scale, not like any kind of galactic conflict, just these 5 characters + countless fodder versus these other 5 characters + countless fodder

The bad:
Useless, easily avoidable subplots
Almost no actual character development or world building (I wonder what next episode will be about)
New Deus ex machina devices and force powers
Felt more like recent comic book based movies than Star Wars

The ugly:
Missing a coherent vision or story behind all this
Bad guys are borderline incompetent (on top of being mostly 1-dimensional) and good guys have stupid plans too, main difference being bad luck versus insane amounts of good luck (like in the "execution" scene and many others)
Vacuum - you cannot fly through it like some kind of Superman (and if that scene was supposed to be in the atmosphere the movie did a really bad job of showing that, still probably the most stupid scene of all Star Wars)

Overall an OK movie to watch, just don't expect to get many answers, turn off your logic circuits and don't think about why something is hapenning

Bylo Ren and thiccums didn't even get a training sequence. why did yoda sound like he was being deepthroated? but porgs were thicc. 6/10 Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Thank goodness for user reviews.....because when I saw what a high score the critics gave the film and I left the film a bit bewildered, I wondered if maybe I was just having a bad day? Such a relief that many, many others share my sense of disappointment.
To start with, I'm 42. I went to cinema to watch Return of the Jedi when I was 9. I couldn't wait to see Luke Skywalker return from the wilderness to once again kick the Dark side's arse! However It seems that Disney is more interested in promoting the new characters, making Star Wars an advert for toys and cheap laughs. Firstly there are some incredible scenes in this film but not a lot of originality. It seems that a formula has been found. Credit for the casino scene but it didn't really work and felt more like Harry Potter. I was impressed by the realism in Snook's CGI but he came across as not remotely evil and pathetic in turns of a baddie. The irritating Porg birds were cute at first but then became as irritating as Jar Jar Binks and was an obvious ploy for Disney to sell merchandise. Then Luke Skywalker, where do I begin? One moment he's totally against helping Rey but it doesn't take much for him to change his mind. The best moment in the film is when he seems to be totally destroyed and emerges unscathed then follows a Matrix-style duck and an ever-so familiar Ben Kenobi death. I don't think I'll be in the minority of fans who wanted so much to see him kick ass, now it seems he's going to be a harmless ghost? That left me feeling totally deflated. Yes I know he's old now but he's LUKE SKYWALKER for Christ's sake! Surely he is the biggest character in the whole franchise? Many of newcomers will love the new film but for the old fogies like me, it wasn't terrible but left me walking out of cinema wondering why??? And all I can see is dollar signs for Disney.

The plot is divided in three mini-plot, and one of them is completly useless. As I told before, characters and scenes are good just if you don't think at them together: certain scenes have no sense, certain character are useless and act like fool. All these bad points ruin a movie that could be amazing, but it doesn't even look like a Star Wars film :( Expand

I liked it, but it seemed small, and slow. The main conflict of the first half of the film was very dull, and most of the movie lacked any urgency.
I really enjoyed some of the twists and character dynamics, and there was one fight scene that was particularly outstanding, but I felt like there was too much fat that needed to be trimmed from the script, and the tone was messy.
I think the biggest problem with this film is that it kept the humor of previous films, like The Force Awakens, but lacked its heart, and its charm. There's also the way Rian Johnson handled Luke in this movie, which I wasn't particularly thrilled with, and one scene with Leia was probably written for Superman or Star-Lord (if you've seen it, you know what I mean).
I'll end on a high note, Kylo Ren. While I'm not the biggest fan of the whiny dark Force user (See Anakin in ep. 2-3), and I initially got the impression that Adam Driver's performance was based solely off of the Tusken Raider massacre and accompanying monologue, he has turned out to be a really interesting character with a gripping screen presence and an epically awesome fighter (Where can I pick myself up a TIE Silencer?). His performance was easily my favorite part of the entire film.
I know what I have to do, but I don't know if I have the strength to do it to my favorite franchise.
This movie was like a soup with a few absolutely outstanding pieces of meat floating in a cold broth of mediocrity. 6/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Big fan of nearly anything Star Wars. Absolutely loved the original trilogy. Prequels were...interesting. Old books, cheesy cartoons / CGI shows etc. But there were so many things in this film I did not enjoy. As a film, let alone a Star Wars film.

What I liked:
- Puppet Yoda
- Yoda / Luke scene and interactions. - Bomber run scene at the start was very cool. Loved the struggle you feel for the Rebels. - Unexpected twists with Poe's plans.
- Visual effects. - Brief team up of Rey and Kylo.
- I was ok with the whole Carrie Fisher Jedi float scene. Why not, Jedi do some crazy amazing things. Expand on it. (Did not like how she was basically not harmed from the massive explosion though.)

What I did not like:
- Entire plot revolved around Rebels being slowly chased. Empire not able to send a few ships in front, or the sides. Very odd plot, especially for being 80% of the movie. - Empire is seen as disorganized goof-balls with tempers. Yes, their ranks are thinned. Make them a bit more serious please. - Snoke being killed off immediately. No history revealed. Figured something will be in the 3rd film. Poorly done regardless. - Entire Wacky-Crazy Adventures of Finn and Rose leading to nothing. Phasma death(?) just tacked on during the Wacky-Crazy Adventures.
- Not seeing more of the crazy cool looking Casino world. Tons of potential. - People finally decide warp-suicides are a thing. Could have done this a lot sooner.

This is why the director and editor should never be the same person.

Removing out months of hard work from the final cut is so emotionally difficult but as The Last Jedi has shown, is sometimes brutally necessary.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let me tell you, I am not going to say this movie is good just because it is star wars because the facts are it was probably one of the weak points in this saga and really felt no better than the cringey prequels. It tries to hard to find humour in what is supposed to be a mostly serious movie and just feels off in star wars. Another thing I found very strange was the unbelieveabilty of some sequences, such as Leia being the only survivor of a massive ship explosion (what a coincidence) and kills off a fan favourite (Ackbar)to introduce Laura Dern into the mix. It definitely also tries to hard to introduce lots of other characters such as Rose, who accompanies Finn through the movie and then dies at the end. I mean, what was the point? Also, none of the rumours or theories turned out to be true leaving a lot disappointed after watching. It really didn't seem like the saga progressed and just felt like a filler for a hopefully much better Episode IX. Expand

Each scene has great ideas but when combined together, they make a movie with mixed tones and create pacing issues that negatively impact the humor and emotional connections with the characters. The first two-thirds of this movie are extremely sluggish, with pretty much nothing happening when the camera is on Ray and Luke. After Ray boards Snoke's ship, the movie really picks up and becomes very interesting and entertaining. The other problem is a REALLY ANNOYING plot thing. When Rose and Finn are about to be executed, the ship blows up. All of the clones around them are either dead or knocked out, and Rose and Finn just get back up and say "I know where a working ship is!" That was really lucky that R and F are okay when everybody else is either knocked out or dead! Another problem is some of the humor was pretty cheap. The acting is pretty good in this movie, and it really built up Kilo Ren's character. He was very well acted in this movie and now one of the most interesting Star Wars characters to me. All in all, the final third of this movie is really great, but the first two-thirds drag for the most part. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There is no denying that Star Wars: The Last Jedi is one of the most hyped up movies of 2017, but there were several questions leading into it that many fans had. How would the change of directors affect the story? Would the film crew be able to adapt to Carrie Fisher's unexpected passing? Most of all, would episode 8 live up to the high expectations? Star Wars: The Last Jedi takes a lot of bold steps, sometimes not in the most clear direction. The movie essentially has two separate plots: one with Rey meeting the legendary Luke Skywalker, and the other featuring the Resistance as they attempt to evade the First Order yet again. One of the main problems lies in that the secondary plot with the Resistance has serious pacing issues, and does not seem be as satisfying as the moments we spend with Rey and Luke. I say satisfying because the entire point of the secondary plot with Finn and a new character, Rose, seems to have very little payoff, and is almost pointless with the exception of the last scene of the film. Their goal was to find a way to evade the First Order, and it ended up failing anyway. Rey and Luke is far more interesting, and it is great to see the chemistry between the characters, but the humor between them feels forced at times. The same humor incorporated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes back in The Last Jedi, and oftentimes it does not work. Must be a Disney thing. John Williams returns to compose the music for the film, and he does as great as ever. This might be one of the best sounding Star Wars films, and quite easily the best looking. The CGI and the cinematography are breathtaking.

Adam Driver reprises his role as Kylo Ren, and once again does a fantastic job. While fans seem to be split on whether or not Kylo is a strong villain, I believe he is one of the most compelling characters in all of the Star Wars movies. During the scenes where Kylo and Rey come into contact, physically or via some force projection, they steal the show. What I really liked with The Last Jedi is the departure from the conventional light versus dark side themes; instead, both Rey and Kylo experience inner turmoil as they grapple with what they believe is the right path. The psychological battles that both characters undergo are as intense as they are thematic. Kylo's relationship with Luke proves to be equally as intriguing, and learning about their backstory and how it led into the events of The Last Jedi further turned those conventional themes on their heads.

One of the most mysterious characters in the last film was Supreme Leader Snoke, and we finally get to see a physical character of him. Snoke is easily one of the most intriguing characters in the film. Unfortunately, we do not get to see much of him in the film, and after seeing the movie, we are unlikely to see any more of him, for better or worse. I understand the thought process behind Rian Johnson's decision regarding Snoke because it means we will see more of Kylo, but it all felt abrupt how they handled it. Another major character that was handled questionably was Princess Leia, who dies during a space battle, but returns to life by the force. Those who have paid attention during the previous Star Wars films knows Leia has a connection to the force through the Skywalker bloodline, but I do not understand why they brought her back considering the fact that Carrie Fisher passed away, and it has been stated that she will not be in the next movie at all. The only silver lining is we are treated to a reunion between Luke and Leia before the final battle, but even that could have been done in a different way somehow. Once the stories of Rey and the Resistance start to link up, the movie does pick up considerably, and the climax is coming up. Well, that is not entirely true. The movie still has about an hour to go, which is not a good sign for a movie being told concisely and put together well. I thought the movie had ended multiple times, but it kept going. The entire movie does feel messy, and while I love more Star Wars, I do not like a movie that has a lacking identity. Here I think lies the movie's biggest flaw: it tried to do a lot while really doing nothing. The movie could be cut considerably and it would still tell the same story essentially. There are some awkward moments, times where character rationales do not make a lot of sense, questionable decisions with major characters, and pacing issues, but overall these little problems are under the umbrella of the movie not being as concise as it should have been. A lot of the movie feels like filler, which means more Star Wars, but a worse movie.

Overall, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is an entertaining movie, but whether or not it is a "good" movie remains in question. This film will definitely leave fans debating and complaining. It seems that a lot of potential was unfulfilled, and I left the theater mildly satisfied. Now it is time to countdown to episode 9.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In my opinion the Force Awakens was a safe and lazy attempt at pleasing fans who were still bitter over the prequels. The director of The Last Jedi had to take a pretty horrible start to the trilogy and try to make it fresh and interesting for this movie. While he does succeed at shaking things up, this movie is very jarring to watch. New ideas are introduced and then thrown away. There were two MAJOR questions brought up in the Force Awakens that are literally answered with bad jokes in this movie. As if to say **** you to the fan theorists out there. One of the new characters is completely useless, Finn is reduced to a secondary character with no purpose at all. And don't get me started on the subplots... the subplots are insanely frustrating to watch. They have no purpose, no real outcome and much of the movie is illogical. The only redeeming story lines are Rey and Kylo's relationship as well as Luke's introduction into his beliefs of the force. Other than that, the movie is paced and edited badly and there are MANY plotholes.

All that being said, the movie has some amazing visuals and cinematography. It probably has one of the best scenes in Star Wars history, and the ending is surprisingly cool and fun to watch. If you want to see some new ideas in the Star Wars universe, you got it, but dont be fooled. This film has some major issues (again mainly with pace and editing), but its better than the Force Awakens... by a longshot.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. At 44 years of age, and having seen all previous Star Wars films I was astounded that none of my 3 teen age children had any interest in watching this film with me. Not even my wife would go - I had to see it alone.

There is a significant difference in the feel of this film compared to the previous ones. While it retains the inter-galactic CGI fight scenes, most of the acting is done by humans - and a significant shift towards women. As a result there is significantly less gunslinger and instead infused with more compassion and a strong feminist undertone.

While you may feel this is undeserved, I have but three complaints of things that need to be restored to these films:
1. Fight scenes need to be more convincing. The light saber action from the leads was very weak and contrived. I've seen high school plays with the same level of physical competence.
2. Its time to work harder on the mechanics/Sci-Fi harder. The drawn-out chase of the resistance cruiser was simply preposterous. The pursuing ships have jump/light speed capability, plenty of fuel and greater numbers - they could easily pop forward and turn around to corner them. Sigh.
3. Having incompetent youths smacks of Harry Potter, not Star Wars. If you can't break in and bust up the tracking device, then fighting your way (or lucking your way) out of being surrounded and captured is also ridiculous.

I give this film a 6 because of the visual spectacle. The plot was decent but choreography, music/sound and the engagement/entertainment level have definitely faltered. Lets just hope they sell enough tickets in China to continue investing in future films.

I was disappointed with this movie. I had shunted a lot of my problems from the Force Awakens on to this film to fix and if anything TLJ made it worse and now left Episode 9 with a herculean task.

This movie seemed more concerned with subverting expectations and tropes than telling a cohesive story. Was it enjoyable to watch, yes. Much in the same way a Marvel movie is fun to watch. But I don't think I will rewatch this move for years to come like I have for the other Star Wars movies. I think that casual fans of Star Wars will be fine with this movie and I don't mean to sound snooty or elitist. Most of this movie's flaws fall into fridge logic. And most people don't waste time in their life sitting around thinking about it. So yeah take your kids, go see it at least once. I'm likely going to see it one more time at least so Disney already won in that regard, the people who will be most upset will be obligated to see this movie at least one or two times.

A much farther attempt than Force Awakens attempted to conjure. Rian johnson does spend too much time with the resistance, and makes it a very throttled, back-n-forth film that never really allows you to connect or hone in to something particular. It wants to do so much. And to its quality, has great effect. But the storytelling became a bit of a juggle-act. On a space odyssey level, it delivers. But as a story following up a very teasing, simple first instalment, Last Jedi does too much and leaves little to look forward to. My complaints are simple, the storytelling wasn't honed in. Instead of making us feel through the trauma, tension of what was going on. Things just happened for thunderous cinematic effect, which they do. But as a whole, you walk away from Last Jedi more throttled than engrossed. And wishing it conveyed its ideas better, in a more honed-in way. As epic as it comes off, was it necessary? While we're left with shame and consequence. Expand

I hope they got paid well by Disney to give such undeserved praise to mediocrity. The second the Chinese actress in the beginning began to make her hero moves, I knew the user reviews were accurate. I'll be brief. The editing and screenwriting at times was so ridiculous, it was entertaining. And why did they have to force a romance at the end? Even those two characters didn't fancy each other. Sound design, CGI, and cinematography was above average. The plot was just enough to carry a major film, but the execution made the story feel like a run-of-the-mill sci-fi show from 2006. Everything kept getting worse and worse, you wonder what is taking so long. Leia's ex-machina moment was gracefully executed, but feel contrived. A friend told me that the editing for Luke at the end of the film could have lingered for effect, and I think he's right. They had wonderful opportunities to reflect, and they failed to take advantage.

Verdict: If you're a film geek (who is not a stubborn Star Wars fan) looking for a laugh, see this movie. If you want a new space opera worth your time, see Rogue One on Netflix.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi, took a bold new direction with many story elements. This was sometimes to it's detriment. Most (if not all) of the story beats that it's predecessor, The Force Awakens, set-up were quickly discarded (Rey's parents being important, Snoke's backstory being integral to the plot, etc). It seems that the intention of these subverted expectations was to tell the audience to forget what they think should happen: don't idolize Luke Skywalker, the force isn't only strong in the Skywalker line. To this effect, I enjoyed how The Last Jedi took old characters whom we love (Han, Luke, and Leia) and told us to let go of what we believe to be true and to make way for the new. I very much enjoyed Luke's wisdom of the force belonging to everyone, not just the Jedi (or the Skywalkers). The trope just seemed overplayed. It was pounded into the viewer's head over and over. "Oh you think this is going to go a certain way? Think again! It's the complete opposite. The Jedi texts don't matter. Luke's father's lightsaber doesn't matter. The subplot on Canto Bight doesn't matter." It all feels like a big troll on the audience. The use of subverted expectations is fine until it gets old. You mean Luke would have no emotional attachment whatsoever to his father's old lightsaber that he lost back in Episode V? It's a hard pill to swallow and the movie doesn't try to help the audience digest it. The worst case of this is the subplot of Finn and Rose and their mission to find a master code-breaker. Not only does the whole Canto Bight scene grind the film to a slog, but the audience is forced to muddle through it just to have the mission end in failure. Moments like these could be handled with more grace instead of leaving the viewer feeling as if the last 45 minutes of the film was wasted time. I did enjoy Poe's story. He was more fleshed out as a character and he was the driving force behind why I cared about what happened to the rebels. (And Leia of course.) I also enjoyed a lot of the things that went contrary to what I expected. I enjoyed seeing the dialogue between Rey and Kylo and how they both were seduced to the "other" side. I liked the fact that Kylo wanted to chart his own path free from past structure, but incidentally falling right into it. I enjoyed the darker themes of the movie over all and the glimmer of hope the audience is left with at the end. This movie is a mixed bag for me. A lot of things didn't work (Finn and Rose aren't being shipped any time soon). It was a fun movie and the over-all point was hit, but the execution was sloppy. This is a fine Star Wars movie, but ranks somewhere in the middle. Expand

Firstly, apologies for the giant paragraph - for some reason it's not registering them when I submit the review.

The Last Jedi introduces several interesting themes and perspectives essential for the franchise to evolve beyond the nostalgia bubble it's trapped in. However, they are poorly implemented resulting in pacing issues, exposition dumps and an abusive reliance on subversion to convey character arcs. In short, the script feels like an A-Ha! moment that wasn't given the time it needed for refinement. The use of subversion is so pervasive that one may feel they are watching a critique on the franchise rather than a fictional narrative. It perhaps needed to be divided amongst the three films to ease viewers into the change. The reaction amongst most fans seems to be in line with the film's core message however, so perhaps it's a masterpiece from that perspective but certainly not from a cinematic point of view. There are some highlights, mainly through the action sequences and the actors do their best with what's written, except when considering comedy. The humour is akin to a late show skit when actors parody their characters through modern day vernacular and real-life scenarios. It regularly broke my immersion and what's worse was poorly edited, often dragging well beyond the non-existent punchlines. Overall, it exposed a dearth of comedic nous from the creators and wasn't in line with usual Star Wars sense of humour which is one aspect that didn't need an overhaul. I write as a lover of film, not Star Wars. I enjoy most of the franchise and I've seen every entry yet am unconcerned if I ever see them again. I am disappointed with this latest entry because it showed potential but didn't know how to treat it. Apart from one scene in the Third Act that stirred me, I was bored. That said, if you like to be taken out of your comfort zone and are unconcerned about what does or does not make good cinema then you may find something to value from The Last Jedi. It's not a terrible film, but as I've stated it's certainly not the best version of itself it could've been; great ideas, sub-par execution.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have very, very mixed feelings on TLJ. I'm just going to break it down into bullets:
Pros:
-Capable female protagonist*
-Diverse cast+
-Top-tier special effects
-Cool locations
-OK pacing
-Luke Skywalker nostalgia 4 evah
-I liked Admiral Holdo. Fight me.

Cons:
*Rey and Rose edge precariously close to Mary Sue territory. Rey being a complete Force-badass despite very little formal training (although I'm glad she's not descended from 'Force royalty' because it implies that the universe may be full of Force-sensitive people just waiting to discover their potential, a la the kid at the end). Rose was underdeveloped and her planting a kiss on Finn just felt...ugh.
+I love that *some* people are collectively loosing their she-it over the "PC" and "SWJ pandering" because the idea of black people and women in their precious space opera franchise ruins their childhood. However, sweet MRA tears are no excuse for bad writing and one-dimensional characters. Also, it would be nice if we can get away from the trope that all space villains must be space Nazis. It's such a low-hanging fruit at this point.
-TLJ is rife with plot holes large enough to fly an X-wing through. Not a Dreadnaught mind you, but still enough to give you a headache if you choose to pay attention. You'll be fine if you suspend your disbelief and lower your expectations a notch.
-The Canto Bight subplot could--should have been cut. Full stop.
-I felt kind of cheated at the end because none of the main characters (Poe, Finn, Rey, Leia, Kylo, or Chewbacca) died. Not because I'm a sadist who likes seeing people die, but it seemed like the ancillary characters (Rose's sister Paige, Admiral Akbar [RIP], Holdo, the poor schlubs in the escape craft) were the ones to suffer the consequences of Poe's insubordination, Leia's inability to communicate her and Holdo's escape plan, and Finn and Rose's misjudgment of DJ. Honestly, I kind of wish that Rose hadn't intercepted Finn's kamikaze moment with the laser cannon. This leads to my next gripe:
-If Finn had sacrificed himself and destroyed the cannon, it would have spared Luke from doing the whole "I'm a punchy hologram" thing. Don't get me wrong-- his moment with Leia was beautiful and the fight was badass, but him Force-projecting from across the galaxy was a real stretch. Now he's dead, Rey has no master to teach her (is it too much to ask for a main character to actually work for their skill?)
-Snoke. What was his deal? I guess we'll never know.
-Like it's been said by countless others-- why not lightspeed-jump-smash the Destroyer in the first place? Was that always an option?? Overall, the takeaway I got from this film is that Disney had decided that the Star Wars franchise is for the young, new consumers and not the diehard fans of the original movies. I think it's great that kids are getting a more inclusive story that they can grow attached to the way older generations have. I just hope that the complex themes are explored in a thoughtful way without oversimplifying them with a binary good-bad, light-dark, Jedi-Sith modality that is easier on the 'younger' demographics. After TLJ my expectations have been permanently lowered, and I'm not even mad. Disappointed, but not mad.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Star wars: The last Jedi is an interesting film. It has managed to create a divide between those who love it and consider it to be one of the best star wars films to date, others claimed it ruined the Star wars lore, like the Prequels and their midochlorians. It's actually quite impressive if you think about it. I'm closer to the negative side, while acknowledging that the movie has its upsides

Let's start with the positives:
I love the way the new Star Wars movies look. The space battles look phenominal, the lightsaber fights are pleasing to look at, and each of the sets are diverse and distinct from each other in a good way. If Star Wars Episode 4 and 5 had the visuals that 7 and 8 had, it would make the original movies feel more mystical and epic than it already is.
My favorite scenes of the movie are the ones that contained Kylo Ren, or Luke Skywalker. Kylo Ren gave an amazing performance to the point where I felt more connected to Kylo than Rey, and was rooting for him to win. Also, Mark Hamil gave an incredible performance, despite not seeing eye to eye with the character vision of Luke Skywalker.
Finally, the suspense that the movie provides with the relationship between Kylo and Rey was well executed (even though it did have that cringey shirtless moment).

Now for the negatives:
It felt like both sides of the war are ineffective, which is frustrating. Every single action that the resistance tries to accomplish fails in some way, and yet the First Order cannot wipe them out. The Vice Admiral was a horrible replacement for Leia and was not suited for leadership, even though she had fought (and supposedly won) a famous war for the republic. Finn and Rose go on a useless sidequest that takes away from the potential time developing Luke and Rey, and Poe, (the only sensible leader left fighting) was berated multiple times, even though he made tactically advantageous decisions that saved the resistance countless times. Rey is also OP in this movie, same as the last, and that most likely won't change in the 9th movie

The scenes with the resistance fighting (excluding the first one) felt pointless, since it seems that no matter what, the resistance will always end up on top. It is evident that the resistance will end up on top, making seeing the 9th movie pointless.

However, Kylo Ren is the only saving grace we have left. He has potential to give us a deep character arc, exploring what it's like to truly struggle between making good and bad decisions for what he sees as the greater purpose. Rey and the resistance can be used as an outlet for Kylo to truly express himself. If the movie were to primarily focus on him, and actually let him accomplish his goals, I truly believe that this series can be saved from its current boring path.

Overall, I would give this movie a 6/10. The visuals and the tension brought out by amazing performaces by Kylo and Luke were undercut by the boring, tedious plotline of the resistance running away for 2 hours of my time. Kylo's potential throughout the trilogy is the only saving grace that this trilogy has left, and if he dies, the Last of my intrest, will end.

However, The Last Jedi is a film while has some great visuals and some very good acting from the cast but is a film flawed in the sense that the film feels like a filler chapter in a trilogy. Unlike the original trilogy where The Empire Strikes Back was a film which had strong narrative a felt like it's own film, The Last Jedi feels like it's only there to connect the first film to the third film. The reasons for this is simply because this film contains nothing of substance which you can take away from it, other than the death of a character which I will not spoil here. I hope that Star Wars films from now on are much better than this and actually tell a good story because this left me feeling empty and wanting more from this film. Expand

Everything about them in this movie is perfect to me. I loved how Luke walks a thin line between good and evil. Grey area is something you don't see in Star Wars and it was great so that being the link between Kylo and Rey was something that I thought was very interesting. The other part of the film is complete rubbish. It felt like they didn't know what to do with other characters. The whole casino sequence and everything that those characters were doing felt like a silly distraction. Expand

Makes me think Disney paid off these critics. The Last Jedi is a very meh kind of Star Wars film. There are a lot o flaws. I respect Rian Johnson's decision to take risks but there are a couple cornerstone pieces with the franchise he tampered with too much. Turning Luke into a hermit was extremely disappointing. He made Luke Skywalker the most beloved hero in Star Wars not likeable in this film and that's an insult. He should have looked at what JJ Abrams did with Han Solo and followed his strategy, to bring back the character and make him feel like the one we all remember. Rose, DJ, and Admiral Holdo's character development is god awful, it's almost as if we are supposed to hate them from the start but instead like them. The Canto Bight scene gets the plot carried away. Leia's drifting through space with the force is very strange. The concept of hyperspacing a ship into Snoke's ship is also not Star Wars. although, this film does have strong moments, the opening scene action is great, Rey and Kylo dueling together in Snoke's chamber, and thr final battle scene at Crait. The ending was good too with everyone reuniting on the millennium falcon. This is probably the best visual start wars movie made too it looks very good. Overall this movie is just okay, the critics are giving this too high of a score and some of the users feelings are a little too hurt about what they did with Luke Skywalker. Not one of the better Star Wars, but I do like it better than episodes 1 and 2 of the prequels because it has more action and feels more like a Star Wars film. Here's to hoping JJ Abrams can finish the sequel trilogy off with a bang with episode 9 The Rise of Skywalker. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My favorite of the sequel trilogy... it isn't the best of course and the it is a bit of a mess. Rian Johnson's take on Star Wars was an interesting one. The characters are mostly okay, but Vice-Admiral Holdo was such a **** that assumed she knew who Poe was just by one event made me want to stab her. Rose Tico was a character I liked at first, but then I realized she didn't save the slave kids on Canto Bight and instead only freed the animals. Why didn't Finn do anything about the enslaved kids? Finn feels like a guy who would have freed them, considering his background. However, though some scenes don't make scientific sense, it's still Star Wars and it was fun for me to watch. General Hux is a stupid sand bag though. I liked Kylo Ren and his scene where he destroyed the mask. Adam Driver portrays Kylo very well and Kylo's dialogue always feel good to me. The Rise of Skywalker having Kylo Ren have his mask again didn't make sense to me because in this movie he makes a huge point that he outgrew it. Anyway, Luke Skywalker... I was fine with how he was in the movie and I thought it made sense. Mark Hamill did an amazing job and his scene with Yoda made me happy. I know the fight scenes weren't super good, but I still really liked them. I wish more questions were answered in this movie, but it was what it was. I liked it. Expand

There is a sense of not caring during this first bit of the film where both the character interactions and plot delivery are performed in a lazy, sometimes disgraceful, manner. Thankfully, it's a huge relief that two thirds of the film deliver what needed to be delivered from the continuing, beloved franchise: familiar faces, action, unpredictable plot twists, exploitation of character strengths and weaknesses, and even moments that will quicken your pulse and make you sit at the edge of your seat. The film performs just well enough for us to wait in anticipation for the next episode. Overall, "The Last Jedi" is a solid entry and nothing more. Special kudos to Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver for getting most comfortable as their characters since the last episode. On that note, continue to rest in peace Carrie Fisher. Expand

I did, however, enjoy the last couple of entries (the Force Awakens and Rogue One) enough to the point of anxiously anticipating this effort. I have to say though I was a little disappointed. The movie suffered from overkill resorting to the same themes over and over again. I often wondered why Mark Hamil never achieved the career accomplishments of his costars. Now I remember. Every male character is whiny, stupid, egotistic, immature, irrational, or make the wrong decisions or not to be trusted. And guess what, the “new” Luke Skywalker has some of them traits too! The leaders in this movie are female, the protagonist an over-powered female (with little training). The people making sacrifices to save everyone? Overwhelmingly female apart from one character. And most are infallible. The days when men saved women? The roles are well and truly reversed in this movie. Not to mention the diversity, interracial relationships just for the sake of it (and also does not add to the movie), and the only joke when it came to racial issues was at the expense of white red headed male character when mentioning his “pasty" skin tone. It was comical to see Chewbacca becoming conscious of being a meat eater (but not in the way they intended), and Luke Skywalker disgustingly milking a sea cow (there was absolutely no point in this). This is supposed be a galaxy far away, and yet you’re reminded of the war-profiteering and rich people being evil. Having animal rights issues thrown in there and a war general being a female with purple dyed purple hair and looks like she teaches gender studies. And we’re all set. The only thing I wasn’t surprised at was that Luke Skywalker didn’t come out as transgender or wasn’t accused by Kylo ren as being a “white male” as an insult. Oh and did I mention that white people are evil? For what it’s worth, I enjoyed it. The visuals are well and truly beautiful, and the action sequences are great. However, had it not had that, I don’t know what score I would have given it, because the writer is so politically driven with Feminism, Diversity, and anti-white male bias. The focus is lost. Lost that is, on telling a remarkable story that makes sense and doesn’t contain more plot holes than Swiss cheese. The character development is so bad that you simply do not care about any of the characters. Characters come and go, and you wonder not only who they are, but you don’t care either. Disney tried so hard to wipe the slate clean that even the Characters blatantly tell us to forget the past on BOTH sides of the war. Luckily, I’m not a huge Star Wars fan and I found some parts amusing that I shouldn’t. Something happens with Princess Leia that made some people including myself in the cinema laugh. Like wtf is going on here moment? otherwise I’d be completely gutted. Because what made Star Wars great, like the Jedi, the Luke Skywalker of old etc is not in this movie.

It's hard to write a review that doesn't include spoilers. But hey, If you ARE a Star Wars fan and want to be spoiled? You can't do any worse than actually watching this movie.

You'd think with a playing time of 2:32, Rian Johnson could have fit in some character development. Yeah, not so much. Disney must be the master of the hype machine bc an 86 on metacritic is WAY to high for this movie. Seriously, give me a break - it's a 60-65 at best. Most of the action sequences are good, and Mark Hamill, Daisy Ridley (Rey) and Adam Driver (Kylo Ren) give strong performances -- as does John Boyega (Finn). The rest of the cast... disappointing. I would go as far as to say that all of the new characters in this movie added ZERO to the quality (except for Benicio del Toro who has a fun but minor role). And, worst of all for this reviewer, they couldn't help themselves but add new cute, fury creatures like they did in Episode 6 that add zero to the story line (Ewoks - *groan* - it sucked then and it's just as bad now). I guess it's all about merchandising, right Disney? I would say that there really are only 3 good Star Wars movies: episodes 4, 5 and 7. Slapstick, lazy insult humor, and distractingly out-of-place modern vernacular threaten to tip the balance to all out farce, until the film jarringly goes for pathos with a subversive take on the Star Wars mythos that is at first refreshing but ultimately too convoluted and contradictory to warrant more than an indifferent head scratch. The detailed production design and cutting-edge special effects are as impressive as ever, but all in service of an uneven story that shuffles interchangeable characters around new-but-familiar backdrops. Mysteries are introduced as quickly as they're swept under the rug. The conflict never really goes deeper than a simple take on 'good vs. evil' or 'young vs. old' (The implicit ageism in this movie, in traditional Disney fashion, is off the charts.) Old and new characters randomly pop up (sometimes literally and inexplicably) to rattle off clunky exposition and hoary declarations. Despite some intriguing gestures towards an internal battle brewing within the protagonist and antagonist, such complexities are quickly diffused with on-the-nose dialogue that relies on telling rather than showing. It's hard to care about the mysteries, conflicts, and mythologies that are woven through the story when characters repeatedly stop the action to explain away everything in increasingly literal and tone-deaf terms. This makes for easy, accessible entertainment, but it's constantly undercutting any semblance of drama, suspense, or cinema, a few gorgeous set pieces and locales not-withstanding. Entire subplots (something about a Master Codebreaker?) and characters could have easily been left on the cutting room floor, allowing for a more focused and purposeful movie. It's as if the filmmakers made the mistake of conflating running time with "epicness," rather than work to make each scene build to a cohesive whole. The film is easily 30-minutes too long, which turns the beautifully-staged climactic battle into an exhausting and perfunctory coda rather than the culmination of 40-years of meticulous world-building. The film seems like a grab bag of ideas, gags, archetypes, and plotpoints that the filmmaker/studio was too enamored with to let go of, but not diligent enough to fully integrate into a compelling story. Ultimately, like the prequel trilogy, this movie probably works best if you turn the sound off and just appreciate the design and technology behind the visuals. I was skeptical about the surprisingly low user score this movie is getting across the board, as it reeked of sour grapes from the fanboy brigade, but after seeing the movie for myself, I get the reaction. The film is perfectly mediocre and passable and not really worth the fuss. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a Star Wars fan, I really wanted to like this movie. But I didn't. While it has its moments, it's far from the quality film we deserve. I have always maintained that I love all Star Wars movies equally and think they all deserve a place in the series. I love the original trilogy, I love the prequels, and I even really loved The Force Awakens. Which is why this movie was such a disappointment.

This movie doesn't "feel" like Star Wars. Rogue One didn't really "feel" like Star Wars either, but in a different way. Rogue One was different, but still good. The Last Jedi feels like a high-quality Star Wars fan fiction that the interns drafted up while all the talented Star Wars writers were out to lunch. From the very outset, we're given an opener with tons of cheese that I guess was supposed to make the kids laugh because Disney mandated it. And the entire film is full of forced one-liners and humor that falls flat. Then there's Kathleen Kennedy's lovely forced diversity. Every character in the Resistance is either a woman, a racial minority, or often both. Laura Dern plays an unlikable moron with purple hair and Rose Tico is completely unnecessary to the film. One of the characters even has an annoying speech impediment.

Nobody cares about this kind of stuff in movies, and it's especially annoying considering it came at the cost of quality. Speaking of which, this movie is all over the place. There are a handful of good scenes and not much else. I forgave Rey's effortless use of the Force in Episode VII because it had just awakened in her and was so powerful, even Snoke felt it. But Rey doesn't even have much of a personality in TLJ and overcomes every dumb obstacle with minimal effort. Speaking of Snoke, he's not a mysterious dark presence anymore, he's a wrinkled old man in a hideous bathrobe who dies like a b**** and we don't learn anything meaningful about him before he does. The entire casino planet part was entirely unnecessary and reeks of the writers desperately wanting to have another eye-popping cantina scene like the last movie. Rose whines to Finn about child slavery so they save a bunch of animals and then leave the kids behind to stay as slaves for some reason.

Captain Phasma reveals she's not dead and approximately 3 minutes later, she's effortlessly cut down by Finn the janitor in hand-to-hand combat. Chewie is just kind of there the whole movie and never does anything. Luke is all sad because he failed as a Jedi and acts like a whiny jerk for most of the movie instead of the powerful Jedi he supposedly is. There's an absolutely horrendous scene where Leia gets sucked into space and magically flies back into the ship with the Force with absolutely no explanation as to how or why. You might as well have just shown her in space then blacked out the screen with the words "plot device" on it, then cut to Leia safe inside the ship because it would have had the exact same effect on me.

Then at the end, there's a generic recreation of the Battle of Hoth that I couldn't be bothered to care about. Also, for the entirety of the film, Kylo Ren is still an edgy, angry crybaby. Every line of dialogue in this film feels like it was written by freshman drama students and character development is completely nonexistent aside from Luke's change of heart and admittedly cool showdown with Kylo Ren, which aside from the throne room fight was the only part of this movie I actually enjoyed. The Last Jedi is an absolute mess and it certainly isn't a Star Wars movie, whatever it may be. I'm not blinded by nostalgia, I liked The Force Awakens. But this movie dashes any interest or development episode VII created for the Star Wars saga. I honestly have no interest in seeing where the story goes from here because the journey up to this point was so absurd and poorly executed. I'd honestly be satisfied if JJ Abrams revealed in Episode IX that everything that happened in TLJ was just Finn's fever dream while he was knocked out by Kylo Ren in Episode VII or something and then pick up from where TFA left off and actually stick to Abrams's original ideas.

I'm not in the category of people who think this movie is the worst film ever made and it wasn't quite as bad as I assumed it would be. But I felt lukewarm about it as I watched it and the more I marinate over it, the less appealing it becomes. I had the same experience with The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. And that's what this film is isn't it? It's the Crystal Skull of Star Wars. Let's forget it ever happened and never speak of it again.

There was a LOT of emphasis on Poe in this movie and they fleshed out his character - young, brash, always trying to be the hero and sometimes getting it but sometimes not. You get to see him in a *lot* of starfighting which makes for great action sequences.

Rose's character felt way more down to earth than Rey. Plucky engineer turned heroine.

Feels like this movie should've been about 30-45 minutes longer - the subplots really did not feel that well meshed together at all.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While it wasn't terrible, it had enough flaws to make it one of my least favourite Star Wars movies, and this coming from someone who has been a fan since he saw the original when he was 7 years old. While there were a few cool parts, and the effects were very good, the character arcs for Leia and Luke were extremely unsatisfying. The humour was right out of The Avenger's playbook. The story was disjointed and lagged mightily in the middle. Unlike the Ewoks in Jedi, which had a critical role, the porgs seemingly were put in there for fans of cute things on Youtube. I get that Rian Johnson was shooting for something different, the way that Empire was different from Star Wars, but either his story was too rushed or he lacked the storytelling chops to pull it off. I'm sorry to say I won't be watching this one again any time soon. Which is too bad because this is probably the first Star Wars I won't have seen at least twice in the theatre since 1970 Expand

I didn't expect a brilliant movie, I expected them to deepen the plot and the characters introduced in Force Awakens. All of them had potential.
Yet it was all turned in favor of doing a Marvel movie in the Star Wars universe. A good laugh here and there is okay, but this movie puts too much emphasis on bringing up laughs.

I loved some of the lines from Luke. The were the sound of the fans - the past Jedis did lots of things wrong and that's what finally broke him. Yet he was out of character at least two or three times.

Poe was a puppy held in a cage. Lots of noise and movement, but in the end - none of effect. Finn could be completely cut out of the movie and it wouldn't change a thing.

Leia had her scenes and one in particular should've been her last. That would be so much more both for her and Kylo. Yet they went with Superman style. Foolish.

Hux is a joke in this movie and I reckon that's on purpose.

While this one was not able to deliver the same thing that "Empire strikes back" did, it copied some of it, while also borrowing from "Return of the Jedi", yet lacking it's depth.

Kylo Ren is not and will never be the next Vader. Adam Driver tries hard, but all that is being written for his character makes it impossible.

Snoke was put to waste in the movie.

The FO and Resistance chase was absurd, and I mean absurd while looking at all SW movies and the final fight was just so plain and simple, it irritated me.

I feel a bit broken by this movie, as I see where Disney wants to go with it. "Kill the past", as Kylo states it, is Disney's plan. Cut the ties with the previous installments. That is "a" strategy.

I find it a broken one, as it could've built a new cult based on the old movies, sparkled with a fresh look, yet it killed both.

To sum up, two quotes:
- Mark Hamill on his role in TLD: "When I read 8, I told Rian [Johnson, the writer-director], 'I fundamentally disagree with virtually everything you've decided about my character'," Hamill said during an ABC interview.
- "This is not going to go the way you think." I concur. Sadly.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Repetitive, tired, committee-driven filmmaking, full of implausible nonsense and downright idiocy. Maybe the Resistance should call it a day. They only have a classroom or so full of fighters left. Give someone else a chance.

I'm not going to waste finger calories and point out all the dumbness in this movie. I'm just hoping some fans out there aren't buying this Disney garbage and see it for what it is -- shameless monetization of a once-great sci-fi franchise.

George Lucas, be glad you cashed out. At least you have your dignity.

Some scenes still give a fan the "Now where have we seen this before?" feeling but I guess it wouldn't be Star Wars if it didn't. There are some elements that really sort of break the "logic" of Star Wars universe. If you take SW seriously and not as entertainment you might be offended by what Disney did with this movie. There is a padded out middle with a needless side plot that contributes nothing to the story. It gives more time to throw away characters, but still leaves them as throw away characters by it's resolution. They also include an odd technological plot point that feels more like Star Trek than Star Wars. There are so many holes in the story left by The Force Awakens, but The Last Jedi uses it's long run time to create it's own new holes instead of filling the old ones. You can totally tell which scenes were added for those re-shoots that delayed the movie from May to December and they were completely unnecessary. I think TFA is actually better overall because while TFA replaced story with action, TLJ replaces story with just... well nothing much really. Filler. The jokes are mostly bad but they don't distract too much from what's going on. People will defend this movie by calling criticisms nitpicking but I really don't think they are. The plot holes are huge and obvious. You don't need to nitpick them, you can't miss them.
Having different writers and directors for the 3 movies is giving them a total lack of consistency in vision for the story.
Overall this trilogy feels like a cash in to sell books and eventually create a huge new extended universe just like the old cannon had.

How is it possible to make some of the most ingenious and inspired scenes in SW universe and then cut to uninteresting cliche riddled rubbish. Basically this movie is an amalgamation of two films, one about rebellion and one about force, that are linked only by a flimsiest thread and sometimes visual reminders.
I loved one for the thought provoking ideas and visuals, and hated the other for utter lack of anything interesting (aside from possibly some slick CGI). Fynn is now utterly useless failure. Poe is a standard hot headed, wise cracking good guy, we have seen in most movies since the 80s. And Rose is just an exposition and punchline setup mechanism. Am I being too harsh? Think of the movie without them, does the resolution change much? Exactly!

That being said, this 2 and a half hour movie is actually worth it, for that one superior 40+minutes film. But only just.

Ending was cool, end was wierd.

I felt it was a decent effort in character development for the future films, but the tepid story and plots holes kind of ruined a lot of the positives. Additionally, a lot of the middle could have been shortened, and the whole Rey self-discovery portion didn't make sense to the lay-person (me), especially since I didn't major in English, so I have no idea what all that symbolic imagery meant to her character or to the story. With that said, light-saber and spaceship battles never hurt a Star Wars film, so at least we had that going for us. And the dialogue and character stories were decent, so at least it's got that in favor of it over the prequels.

Another negative is that I don't really like Adam Driver's performance for Kylo Ren. I'd say it's just too emo or bratty, not that layered like Daisy Ridley's depiction of Rey. The rest of the cast is pretty decent, with Mark Hamill upping his charisma at midichlorian levels we haven't seen since Episode IV.

So in the end...am I glad I saw it? That's kind of a push. It's 2.5 hours of some excitement, followed by some dragging on and a little disappointment and confusion, followed by some ok fight scenes, and ending with a lukewarm feeling in the end. Would I have watched it if I'd know what the experience would have been like? Eh, I guess so, just so I would know the story in case we get rave critic AND user reviews for the next installment. And in case Matthew Vaughn, Joss Whedon, or one of the Nolans happens to sign on for the next project.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last Jedi is a beautifully filmed movie, but it's emotionally lifeless. There are very few moments that are genuinely gripping- the new cast (Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, and John Boyega) are not given any decent character moments. Who is the main character in this trilogy supposed to be? The character arcs are not clear, and many of the decisions they make in the film are questionable, or outright absurd in the case of Luke. Pressing questions from The Force Awakens are not addressed effectively, and some are not even addressed at all (i.e., how Maz Kanata acquired Luke's saber). By the end of the film, Rey and Kylo remain practically unchanged from TFA, and the galaxy has not changed one bit either, save for a shakeup among the First Order ranks. The Last Jedi just seems so pointless and meandering. The main characters are given very little to work with, and the dynamic between Luke and Rey is underwritten and underperformed (on the part of Daisy Ridley). Mark Hamill gives a good performance as Luke and is most definitely the saving grace of this otherwise lackluster film. Characters are introduced that provide very little purpose other than serving as plot devices (Benicio del Toro) and distract from the central characters.
TLJ is certainly different- it avoids rehashing previous Star Wars films, but the story is far too fractured, spending too much time on Cato Bight and too little time on Ach-To and Crait. Snoke, who is played incredibly well by Andy Serkis, is given very little to do, and his potential is wasted when he is rather unceremoniously killed by Kylo. Snoke is shown to be incredibly powerful, but dies in such a lackluster (and frankly, inconceivable) fashion that he comes off as a bumbling, pointless antagonist. Luke's actions in this film are so unbefitting and so contrary to his character that the flashback scenes are rendered unconvincing and weightless. The Jedi Master's final moment is well-filmed, but not as emotionally resonant as it could have been, a result of poor writing and character direction. As a film, TLJ is entertaining, but it's thin plot and poorly written characters ultimately hinder it from being anything but mediocre.

Many of the narrative decisions here were refreshing too, from plans failing to materialize, chasitizing of reckless bravura in favor of feminine wisdom, lamentations on the ambiguity of good and evil, reluctant father figures, and some surprising tension/tenderness between Kylo and Rey. Still, the movie is genuinely bad through most of its overlong (by a few parsecs) running time. It's a tonal mess and the reliance on humor ends up more like a crutch. It's also just a shame they couldn't have tried to make something good with the material instead. In it's current form, Its really taking a lot of mental gymnastics and Orwellian double think to contort my brain sufficiently and appreciate the absurdity on display in this new Disney trilogy.
