This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie really needed someone to look it over and say "does this make any sense" or "why are we doing this?". Where to begin.

The"chase scene" in space doesn't make any sense. Tie fighters don't have a "limited" range. They just can't jump in to hyperspace. A transport can not do that much damage to a capital ship that big.

To much plot holes, I'm already tired of writing.

I almost left after the first 5 minutes after it ignored the basic laws of physics, then there was the ruination of good characters. Technically beautiful, but the story was just horrible rehashing of The Empire Strikes Back.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I would give this is a 5.5/10. I really loved some moments in this....and equally despised some others. I agree with a lot of what Kenny said above. Some really beautiful moments that overall were ruined by a hugely contrived plot.

What I enjoyed
1) I enjoyed the interaction between the characters. Luke, Kylo, Rey, Leia, even Snoke were all great in this.
2) The fight between Rey, Kylo and the guards was great.
3) Luke's force projection for his end fight was fantastic. I always felt that this was how strong force users would fight, not with a lightsaber (i.e. Yoda in the prequels). Well done.
4) Great visuals overall. Crait was beautiful.
5) I liked how Luke harped on how the Jedi order was flawed. It gave voice to my distaste of the Jedi as they were portrayed in the prequels. Again, Luke is fantastic in this.
6) It at least didn't feel to me like this was a rehash of any other Star Wars movie. Rian did move the series in directions I didn't expect.

What I did not enjoy
1) Poe/General Hux opening exchange was really corny to me and set a tone right off the bat where I felt uneasy with what was to come. Domhnall Gleeson is flat out miscast for this part IMO. He's a great actor in other movies but in this series is whiny and not intimidating at all as I would think a leader of the first order should be.
2) Supergirl Leia. For her to survive the explosion, then decompression, then come flying back to the ship like she's from Krypton just felt so un-Star Wars to me. Thought I was watching a Marvel movie at that moment.
3) Bombers that require a person to manually release the bombs...really? This isn't WWII. Also, could they have been any slower?
4) The use or non-use of shields, cloaking. Some ships had shields (resistance), others didn't (dreadnaught), some ships were cloaked....their use just seemed to be there to support the contrived plot.
5) The long chase between the first order and resistance....hugely contrived in my opinion. Kenny explained this well above...non use of tie fighters to attack, why didn't some of the FO destroyers jump ahead to cut off the resistance, etc etc etc. Just dumb. And then the resistance need to send someone to find a slicer, board the Super star destroyer, slice into....just dumb. All of this was lazy writing with huge holes.
6) Canto Bight was unnecessary. Although I didn't mind the design etc, it did not add much to the story. See point above.
7) So Luke dies because....he's worn out? Lame, I immediately thought of Padme dying from a broken heart. Felt really contrived to me.
8) The destruction of the FO fleet by the resistance carrier going to lightspeed spits in the face of every other star wars battle ever. Why didn't they use similar tactics to destroy the death stars, etc. And why didn't she do this earlier? Or use the medical frigate first to do this before it runs out of fuel. Dumb
9) Rose. Although I liked her at times, her exposition at other times (being the moral compass that she was) felt really hamfisted and preachy at times.

Did anyone else think Yoda looked odd? I enjoyed his part in the movie but to me, his cgi seemed off.

Overall, I'm just kind of disappointed. There were glimpses of a truly special all time great movie in here.....but some of the lazy writing for particular plot points really ruined it for me. Perhaps I'm too picky, I don't know.

Just my 2 cents.

This isn't a bad movie on its own. Cinematics overall are high quality. This is a bad Star Wars movie though.

However, what this story can't make up for is the terrible story, and terrible character development. Fans want a space opera, not a popcorn action flick. With what started off as a great beginning to a new saga in The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi goes on a completely different tangent. The new characters we met in the previous episode are completely overshadowed by another bevy of extras who take up way too much screen time. We wanted backstories to already existing characters, and we got very little. Rian's direction regarding Luke Skywalker was also terrible. He's a completely different person from who we all came to love, and those changes to Luke's character are not well explained.

It's like these writers and director have completely missed what fans love about the Star Wars universe and related movies. They decided to write their own fanfiction rather than continue a good story. This movie had some really good parts, but it also had a lot of cringey, terrible parts.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Yeah, they need to drop Rian Johnson. His writing has ruined Luke Skywalker, made the whole movie filled with plot holes, casino scene dragged on, Finn and Rose's relationship had worse chemistry than Anakin and Padme, turned Leia into superman when she went into outer space, completely sodomized fan theories about Rei's origin, Snoke didn't even get that much of a spotlight, and finally, Phasma was still useless.

What the movie does right; All of the fight scenes, space battles, jokes (the one's that are actually funny), and the final fight on Crait.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Honestly I am writing this "review" just to clear my head and get back to my normal life. I am literally obsessing on how mixed I feel toward this movie. I can't concentrate. So here's my pros and cons list. I will probably update. (again, just to keep my head clear)

Pros:
-Gorgeous cinematography
-Fantastic action sequences
-Interesting dynamic between Kylo and Rey
-Interesting and much needed "end" to the traditional jedi way
-Great acting by Mark, Carrie, and most of the other cast members
-Incredible scene in Snoke's throne room (yes, all of it)
-Kylo is a fascinating villain
-Interesting focus on the "grey" areas between the black and white
-Force ghost Yoda
-Mostly funny humor
-Overall very fun and interesting to watch

Cons:
-Continuity from previous episodes is neglected
-Slightly off-putting meta-narrative about "forgetting the past"
-Luke's character arc is questionable at best
-Snoke is a throwaway villain with no backstory after being built up in Ep. VII
-Captain Phasma is another throwaway villain with a stupid death
-A couple plot-holes (Ex: Luke goes into exile, but they found a map?)
-Many moments that are just strange or written poorly
-Finn and Rose subplot is literally pointless, romance is forced and cringe-worthy
-Finn gets no character development
-The casino subplot could have been avoided if Holdo hadn't been a b**ch to Poe
-Poe came off as an idiot
-Excessive CGI, especially in the casino
-Luke's final battle with Kylo was neat, but overall disappointing

In conclusion, I can safely say that this movie is divisive for fans. While most tend to choose one extreme, I myself am torn. I had fun watching the movie, and am generally interested in the story. That said, I can't ignore the problems like some fans.

To quote my thirteen year old son from the cinema today "...it just doesn't feel like star wars...". Can't disagree with him there. I came, I saw and was definitely entertained but not by a star wars.... by something new. Space wars? Maybe? Wait for the DVD guys. If this work was derived from any other space-thing material I would probably give this a solid 7. But it uses the name and so it gets a 5/10 from me. Also I love my son for pointing out "...where was Lando?".

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This could have been such a great movie if it didn't spend so much time re-hashing previously used material and wasting the potential of well-conceived characters.

- Young hero of first film struggles to control their powers, seeks the wisdom of old master on secluded planet

- Tyrannical military junta reigns supreme despite the earlier destruction of their prized superweapon.

- Rebels are forced to abandon their hidden base and move elsewhere.

- Bad guy is conflicted and "there's still good in him".

- Young hero struggles with daddy issues and wants to know about their parent(s).

- Rebels eventually set up on barren waste planet where they jump into trenches and two-man low-altitude speeders and stand off against giant mechanical walkers marching towards their base.

I think I'm just going to stop watching these movies expecting compelling and original storytelling and just consume them for the action aspect from now on like I would a Transformers movie or a Call of Duty game. That's what this franchise is becoming - the lowest common denominator that sacrifices innovation and nuance to appeal to the masses through fan service and cheap, poorly timed humor. That doesn't make it a terrible movie or universe, it just makes it tragically mediocre. As much as it pains me to say it, I'm done getting excited about this franchise. It's pretty clear that it's becoming less of an artistic expression of fantasy and more of a cash cow than anything else. That's the real tragedy in all of this.

You were the chosen one, Disney!

Why is luke drinking milk like that(LOL)?.. God, I wanted this to be good. I prayed this would be good. But it's just not. This movie is SLOW, despite the appearance. Tedious. Plodding. Lacking characters we give a damn about. The SW makers need to go back to what worked for this franchise: use real models (things that look real on screen). Give us characters necessary to the plot, not just to the current "social construct."

It's better than Attack of the Clones, but that's not meant as high praise.
The storyline with Kylo Ren and Luke is believable and brilliantly done, and his relationship with Rey is well executed too. But that's only one of about 4 storylines in the film and the rest are garbage. Finn goes from being one of the funniest, most charismatic characters in Force Awakens to a bland space eater generic supporting hero. It's also full of plot holes and squanders some of the most interesting characters that the last film introduced, not to mention the most boring chase sequence I've ever watched.
My girlfriend, who had never seen Star Wars before we started dating liked it. It made me furious, and it's probably the only Star Wars movie that I won't return to see a second time.

I would say this movie is pretty nice if this is the first star wars you've ever seen. But if you're a die hard star wars fan then you'll find it pretty disappointed.
I am a star wars fan myself. And I would like to say this movie does not deserve 0 nor 10. I've seen movies better and worse than this.
It is really difficult for a sequel to surpass its predecessor. And the team try to do their best. They wiped out some of most beloved characters in order to tell you this is a new era, and we should let go the past. That' partially true.
Let's talk about the movie itself:
- It's a two and a half hour movie. But I think they should focus more on the main storyline. There're some sub-plot fits better with novel or comic but not the movies.
- Splendid visual. Disney just simply doesn't disappoint us.
- Bad pun. I don't know Disney tries to let the franchise more children friendly or what. Some of humor just feel unnecessary with Star Wars itself.
- Unbelievable moments. I don't want to contain spoilers in this review. But sometimes the plot just blows your mind. In a bad way. You'll feel like: Come on this is not how it's gonna work.
- Lots of battles. Those space battles are really satisfying. But I still want to see more duel between light-saber users.
- Commercial elements. For unknown reason, I always think some character, robot, creature are added because it can be a cash grab for Disney aiming at younger audience. Just a feeling.

It's still a Star Wars movie, but the plot is really the drawback on this episode. Unless they find out a way to blow our mind in episode IX. I'll give it 5 out of 10 now.

Articles, interviews, reviews, recaps and so on invite you to treat every movie as a major cultural milestone or religious experience. What they are is fairly okay big budget action movies. If you liked the Force Awakens you'll like this pretty much sums it up. If you're looking for a bold new direction you're out of luck. The movie holds a few surprises but it all feels pretty safe without getting too wacky or sentimental.

The best part is the visuals, there are several big fights that we're crazy cool. I like the mix of CGI and practical effects, with only a handful of cringe worthy CGI characters. The acting is pretty good, with much improved performances by Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Adam Driver who each seemed to have found the grove with their charters. Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher are stand outs with very moving turns as their classic characters. All this is done with the burden of what is easily the most disappointing part of the movie, the story. Where to start, well if you're a fan of Battlestar Galactica this might seem very familiar. I won't get into spoilers, just keep that in mind if you go see this. I will say it's all a mess. Things happen out of nowhere, nothing feels earned or happened with any kind of logical story progression in mind. The landscape of what's going on is very muddy and this wouldn't be an issue if the movie didn't try and make you feel like it was so important. Character motivation is unbelievable at best, everyone just does things cause they're cool, the movie in a strange self aware moment even points this out. I did really like some of the commentary on war itself, who really fights wars and who really benefits. It's a bold stand, especially in such a high budget people pleaser of a movie. I hope we see more of this in future movies. This all comes down to if you like Star Wars and the modren Star Wars movies so far you're going to like this.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When I first saw the user review scores for this movie I was a little surprised. I mean the concept of a star wars movie being on par with the skyline sequel seems impossible. For the first week of the movie's release I had to try (and usually fail) pretty hard to avoid spoilers, which frustrated me because even though I'm not the biggest star wars fan, I Loved the force awakens and wanted to experience it's sequel for what it is. Now That I've seen the movie,I will say that while this movie has been a bit over hated by the audience, it was in my opinion, thoroughly disappointing. I feel that the biggest flaw with this movie is simply that it doesn't feel like a star wars film. Putting the series in perspective, it's backbone has always been each movie's feeling of adventure. "A new hope" kick started the franchise because it not only created an enthralling universe, but took it's heroes through a variety of locations and scenarios which gave the audience a feeling of excitement and progression. Like an amusement park, there was something new and interesting around every corner. Now let's look at the last Jedi. The concept of a Star Wars movie having a plot taking place over the course of like, two days seems like a cardinal sin. I remember the exact moment in this movie where my expectations dropped. The first twenty minutes of the film started off on the right foot, (Grand scale space battles aren't new to this franchise, but they don't get old easy.) I felt a little nervous however, when they mentioned that the bombing fleet the resistance loses in the beginning was all the bombers they had, and then they say that the resistance is down to a few hundred people spread across four ships. How can it be a war if one side has a single army? And if that is all that's left, then they must not hold any planets either. This isn't a war anymore, it's just what is essentially the government running down some convicts. This may seem like a petty complaint, but it seriously damaged my enjoyment of the film when I was supposed to believe that we can still logically root for such a small force to win the war. But that's not the moment where I lost hope in this movie, it was when during the battle, the resistance resolves to keep out of the enemy ships range and think of a plan. I remember thinking to myself "They better not stay there the whole movie." But hey, guess what the plot is about? slow attrition. On top of all that, the movie Seems to have a general theme of everyone failing to do everything. To go into better detail about this, look at how each of the three subplots plays out. The mutiny subplot is slow paced and is ultimately pointless as the people fighting have no reason to. a third of this movie is literally about people considering violence against one another over misinformation. The casino subplot is based on the pointlessness of the mutiny story, and is full of weird, animal rights messages, some of the worst costume design in recent memory, (Those police officers in specific) A pointless drunkard character, and a "Big reveal" that the resistance has some evil tenancies too, which is really just saying they had the audacity to buy weapons when they were trying to win a war. The subplot about Rey's training was probably the best part of the movie, but it still destroyed the legacy of one of cinema's most recognizable figures by making Luke into a depressed old man who's lost all faith. On top of all this, the movie also undoes all of the progress made in the last film. "Oh, the resistance destroyed the star killer base? well too bad, apparently that one solar system we saw get destroyed was the entire republic, and the first order won the war. "so we found Luke and he's gonna save everyone right?" Nope, he wanted to go missing, and has gone from an understanding force for good to a close minded old man who wants to end the Jedi order. This movie wasn't just bad because it was a disappointing sequel, it's bad because it voids all of the powerful moments in it's superior predecessor. I think my last real complaint is that I really don't know what the message of the story was. At first I thought it was "Move on from the past", but that's the mentality the villain holds on to. So... what is it? after recalling the plot, the only moral I can find is "Hope is good" Which isn't just generic, but it's the message of the entire franchise, we need something a little more specific for individual movies. All in all, this movie is worth a watch if you want to follow the plot, but it wasn't the continuation we wanted. Expand

There are great scenes, but there are just that -- scenes. The movie as a whole suffers to being focused on too many things at once. Think the ending battle of The Phantom Menace but for the entire film and more boring.

Did the movie throw a ton of fan theories out the window? Yes. Was it entertaining? Yes. That's why I gave it a 5. The other 5 points are for substance and this movie has no substance. Only one of the three or four subplots the movie has is interesting (the Luke & Rey plot) and even that plot is plagued by an out of character Luke Skywalker. I will say that Mark Hamill did a great job with what he was given. Finn's subplot is meaningless in the film and I hated Poe Dameron more and more as the movie went on. There was no logic to what he was doing the entire time. Kylo Ren shows promise but director Rian Johnson never really has the confidence to pull off a daring plot twist as far as both Rey or Ren is concerned. And if you're expecting anything from Hux, Snoke, or Phasma in this film...don't.

Out of place humor ruins several moments in this movie. Whoever came up with island nun-janitors and a scene where Luke milks an animal in front of the audience should no longer work on a Star Wars script. Every Force user in this movie is incredibly overpowered and I'm sure it will leave a ton of casual Star Wars fans utterly confused as to what is going on on screen. Leia in particular has a cringeworthy moment that will take you out of the movie. Lastly, a certain character from the first six films briefly returns and unleashes an ability so overpowered you will wonder why they never attempted it before, specifically in Return of the Jedi. The film creates several saga plot holes in this way.

If you're a fan of George Lucas' first six films, I don't think you'll like this film. You may enjoy watching it, but liking it is another story. If you liked The Force Awakens, you will be disappointed by the way that Rian Johnson throws any promise the film had in the garbage. Did this movie ruin my childhood and is it one of the worst movies of all time? Absolutely not. But it is, in my opinion, the worst Star Wars movie to date. The movie is just a mess.

It has a completely useless side story with Finn and Rose, essentially severing anything interesting that could have happened with Finn's character. Poe gets cucked by a purple haired space lady who was frankly just a d!ckhead general for not actively sharing her plan with everyone else. Phasma...died, so... thanks for doing absolutely nothing with her. Rey, Kylo and Luke were pretty interesting, but they only consisted of like, 1/3 the movie. I was initially on board with the idea of "Subverting Expectations", but not when literally every subplot set up in TFA gets "Subverted" into a dead end. Expand

Another round of edits would've really helped this movie out. A few amazing scenes but simply too much cruft that really take away the momentum of the main plot. The humor is painful even by Star Wars standards.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well you're never going to please everyone! It's Star Wars after all. I can totally understand the negative outrage from fans, but compared to other 'normal' movies this is obviously not a 0/10 movie. There's a lot to like but just as much to absolutely hate. It does feel that Disney have too much sway. The whole Vegas World Alien Horse racing bit with Finn and Rose made me feel how I felt watching Shia LeBeef swinging through the jungle in Indian Jones and the Crystal Skull. It was just awful. I could see people in the cinema looking around uncomfortably at each other wondering what they were watching. It was totally unneeded and seems is only there for Disney to base a ride at one of their theme parks on.

I'm disliking most of the characters. Kylo Ren is the only one that I feel comfortable with on the whole. Although Benecio Del Toro was great, if woefully underused. His character felt authentic and engaging and could've been a great addition to franchise as a new lovable rouge type hero. I was willing him to come join the fight at the end. Rey I can just about get along with, although she's still not great. Po and Finn are just embarrassing and don't feel natural to me, overacted maybe. I wanted Finn to crash into the cannon at the end. He's not a great character. I quite liked Rose but she wasn't really needed. Bombers that drop bombs in space – uh hello gravity in space? There's countless annoyances, plot is full of holes, and it's overlong. But I'd be lying if I said I didn't kinda have fun watching it. But I definitely gave it way more passes because it was Star Wars.

Admittedly, this is a snap impression but here's the thing:

The set pieces were incredible. The filler between those pieces were sloppy at best. Here's what I mean. SPOIILERS AHEAD

Okay so the ending. The battle between force ghost luke and kylo was excellent. Luke was relying on genuine Jedi fighting style (more reactive, acrobatic, and at his level, more masterful) while Kylo was using sith style. It felt authentic. But then why did the effort kill Luke? That was weird. Speaking weird deaths: Snoke and Phasma and Alex(?). We had deaths of characters who's character arcs seemed under-utilized. Snoke's death is particularly surprising given that we essentially (should he truly be dead and boy howdy did he look dead) have zero idea of who he is. How Palpatine did not know of him. Any of that. While there are lots of theories and I'm sure the books are comin' that, is a cheap cop-out. Your movie must defend itself and right now (short some explanation next film) we feel a little cheated of Snoke's storyline (and to an extent phasma's as well).

So now let's get to the real issues. How in the hell is the First Order so much more powerful than the Resistence? I mean, we have seen their Star Killer base destroyed. A Dreadnought gets rekt in the first scene. Yes, they destroyed five Republic planets but even given that those planets were core worlds, even one being the capital, the resistance by the end of the film is two dozen people all inside the Falcon. That isn't a resistance. That's an unruly armed protest. Hell, there are fewer members of the Resistance than there were physical Star Destroyers pursuing them (and I believe the current numbers on troops in the smallest class of star destoryer is ten thousand extremely conservatively as in, just the officers required to pilot one and one of these star destroyers looked to be on par with the executor class AND housed Supreme leader snoke a ship that estimates about 100,000 people).

I can suspend some disbelief but come on here: what is going on where twenty people are beating a force that has them at what looks like a 100,000+ to 1 ratio? (And I literally mean like, twenty people, the entire Resistance force is ferried away at the end on the Falcon which according to Wookipedia can supposedly hold 1-2 pilots and 6 passengers so even twenty is pushing it). Then there's the issue of what the hell was the plan (from both sides) with that extended chase scene that really made up the meat of the film. The eventual solution was for a pilot of the last remaining rebel capital ship to make a hypderspace jump directly through the star destroyers tailing them. Which is rad but like, raises the question, why didn't any of the other two (one of which being a medical frigate which is a fairly large rebel capital ship) make this decision as their fuel was running low? They knew it was death as soon as the fuel went out and I literally made this comment in the film like, oh, I guess that's just not something they can do. And then it was the ultimate solution. Those two points are illustrative of what I think is ultimately the problem with the movie. There are great moments but the film labors to set them up by creating bizarre universe breaking and absolutely reality bending decisions/results. And these are world breaking things that break what is happening, in this very film, let alone the general star wars universe (why were the rebel bombers not Y wings???). Overall, I like this film less and less the more I think about it. I can't help but feel it was rushed by production to capitalize on a rigid release schedule and, if they'd just taken the time to iron out some of the largest, glaring details, it could have been a really great film. 5/10 would not recommend paying money to see.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just like everyone else I went into this movie with large expectations that were unmet once again. This movie feels like a cheap imitation of "Empire Strikes Back" the similarities between the two are so blatantly apparent:

* An opening battle at the beginning that involves the resistance on the run from the First Order
* The force-sensitive character spending the majority of the plot away from the rest of the characters, "learning" (I use that term very loosely) from the old master on a secluded planet. * The old master being reluctant to train the student due to past mistakes * The rest of the characters being pursued by the bad guys for much of the film yet unable to get away
* Said characters taking a risk by recruiting a new hacker character from a flashy location, who's motives are unclear.
* The Jedi-apprentice character going into a dark side cave, being made to face herself then leaving her "training" too early to rescue her friends
* The hacker betraying the people who were counting on him
* A "revelation" (if you can call it that) about the force-sensitive character's parents
* A major confrontation between The Jedi Apprentice and the big-bad-emperor-archetype * Kylo Ren turning on Snoke and killing him due to Rey's influence
* Land speeders facing off against AT-ATs on a planet covered in white powder (might as well be snow)
* The rebels being scattered and broken at the end, but with a sense of hope and a mission

Stop me if ANY of this sounds familiar. This movie basically took the entire plot of Empire Strikes Back and threw in some new visuals. There are many bad decisions throughout this movie that hurt it:

- The "Revelation" of Rey's parents being nobodies pretty much wastes all the hype built up from the last movie
- Snoke being killed by Kylo Ren almost effortlessly (Why didn't he just do this earlier?)with no backstory being give. This makes Snoke seem like a typical stock character meant to move the story forward
- Leia's sudden use of the force with no training (that we know of)
- Captain Phasma being dispatched with literally no character development whatsoever
- No Jedi Training
- Forced humor
- No Lightsaber duels
- Yoda (his appearance was pure fan service. Totally unnecessary)
- Luke's demise, such a massive waste of Mark Hamill's talents.

There are only a few bright spots in this movie:

- The force connection between Rey and Ren
- Snoke's force powers
- Rey and Ren fighting together
- Luke's Force Illusion

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ultimately, I left the cinema feeling really disappointed. Firstly, as mentioned on every single review - the middle part drags, resulting in a heavily bloated runtime. The Finn sideplot was not only my least favourite part of the movie, but ultimately absolutely pointless. I don't mind a bit of a bait and switch - but it was just such a redundant part of the movie. There was plenty of other ways of helping his character arc develop.

Next up - Luke - hes thoroughly dislikable in the movie. Luke may be a broken man, but he was never a dick. Some of the new powers that certain characters developed were also daft - reminded me of R2D2 being able to fly all of a sudden in the prequels.

There are some really good action set pieces, but overall I far preferred Force Awakens - it was more of a pure Star Wars movie to me. This one felt like an imposter. I really had high hopes for this. Will give it another go - but as far as I'm concerned, Star Wars 1-9 is the Skywalker saga. Hard to see that playing out the way I'd like in Ep9.

Expand

I expected and accepted that as never ending action seems to be a hallmark of all things high budget and Hollywood these days but certainly the most egregious trait this film has in common with the marvel franchise is the low brow, for lack of a better word stupid, humor that does not fit with the film and really breaks the 4th wall in its absurdity. that, the overall plot direction, and some out of place cutesy little alien critters that I'm sure Disney is producing in plush doll form by the millions as we speak, sums up my complaints. Apart from all that it has some truly surprising twists and we get to see Mark Hamil again, so although I have my complaints and completely dislike the direction this new series has gone I would say its worth a watch, and I do mean a "watch" singular. A second viewing or buying of the movie? certainly not. Expand

The sequel trilogy characters (Rey, Finn, Poe and others) either have 0 character development or a character arc that does not fit their roles. Also ruins every potentially good villain in the sequel trilogy (Snoke, Phasma, Knights of Ren, Kylo, Hux). Overall, while the film can be entertaining at times, the film fails to progress character arcs effectively and does not synergize well with any past Star Wars media.

It's hard to fully like or dislike this film. There's some good stuff like: interesting relationship between Rey and Ben S(w)olo, all scenes including Luke Skywalker and of course Poe Dameron. On the other hand Mr. Johnson gave us a really big "GO F%$K YOURSELVES!" with things like: giving screen time to characters that no one cares about (Rose, Holdo), wasting Finn, DJ (the hackerman, yea they cast Del Toro for this trash role), choosing not to develop anyone (except Kylo) from "the bad guys" side (i didn't like Phasma or Snoke very much but C'MON what was the point of their being in the franchise if they ended up like that?) .
We've got two movies in fact. The predictibale, boring one with rebels fighting Imperi... sorry, I mean FIRST ORDER. Also sub-plot of two love birds at the casino trying to find something to do and almost every "we can be as funny as MCU" scene (i don't know for sure but i should put here this specific part where Leia turns out to be Superman) . The second movie is the one with Rey learning things and training, Luke being grumpy and/or awesome while using new force tricks and Kylo developing some personality. Also we can add here moments with exchange of views between Leia and Poe, which weren't that bad . Although entire movie was long, it didn't feel like it. Maybe action was going a little bit too fast at some points.
I definitely going to rewatch Episode VII at least 2 times and place it somewhere next to the Revenge of the Sith, Return of the Jedi and Rogue One. Just like the Age of Ultron (i'm purposely comparing this to other Disney film) it was a disappointment at some parts; it has elements that were good enough to keep viewers entertained but as a whole it could've been done much better.
One can say that Rian was only inspired by Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi and stories from Legends however he was still keeping the old stuff just so we want to "buy" his movie and in the end not much of original content get through to be remembered in this mess.
Well, to be fair, at least this one is better than Farce Engorges (on the other hand that's not a big achievement).

Unfortunately I didn't get the same reaction when watching the latest installment, here's my reasons:

Firstly the film's runtime is way too long, I'm not saying long films are bad, but when you start to feel like it's going on for too long that's when it becomes an issue, I had this feeling about an hour into it and I felt it could have been shortened.

The film tugs on a lot of branches and tries to explores each of them equally, unlike the Force Awakens you get the story development of Rey and Finn as they get introduced to the world and you follow their story and development, in The Last Jedi you don't really get that.

"Forced comedy" was cringe, I feel like they've seen the success of Thor Ragnarok and some other Marvel titles and decided to add some jokey fun here, this is not what Star Wars is about and to me this just didn't work. I wanted to see more development between Rey, Finn and Ren, you got some of that in this story and admittedly these were the only sequences I enjoyed but the film wasn't really about them, or rather their stories felt less significant, in a lot of ways it was more about the Rebellion as an organisation. I don't understand why the critics say this was the best Star Wars ever... I thought it was okay.. but I preferred Force Awakens to this one.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of, I can see why this movie is at the very least lauded for being a divergence from the Lucas story because it is exactly that. It is a very heavy handed slap in the face to the original story established by the original series. While Force Awakens was lambasted for being a knockoff of its predecessor, Last Jedi in turn tries very forcefully to destroy any vestige of connection to the past. "Kill it(the past)if you have to" proclaims Kylo Ren and that they did. What they do not consider is if doing so was actually the right choice, so desperate they were to forge off on a path of their own. As a seemingly odd olive branch, the movie does pay fan service to the original characters with brief nostalgic moments between them, but all too fleeting, and then quickly snuffed out by the main storyline.

I will start with my main issues first. First of, the use of force powers in these latest episodes is to the point of overkill. The reason the Jedi were so revered in the original series was because their presence and their use of powers were used so sparingly and TASTEFULLY. Kylo Ren's and Rey's use of the force is so often and so blatantly excessive that they may as well have Marvel style superhero costumes on. Last Jedi also does not even attempt to offer any explanation of how Rey is basically the most powerful Jedi in existence despite the lack of training or any exposure to the force. This was already evident in Episode 7 but I was patient enough to wait for an explantion in Episode 8 but none was forthcoming, making any possible explanation in Episode 9 impossibly believable. Princess Leia meanwhile has been relegated to meme status with her space flying powers after another (way too many in this movie..or any movie) fake out death scene. Luke Skywalker also pitches in with more force power display, this time with astral projection powers which basically form the crux of the climax in this movie and devolves him from Jedi Master to cheap parlor trick magician. And of course, Rey saves the day by lifting at least 5 tons worth of boulders - again with no training. OP much?

I would have given this movie a lower score but in honesty, that is really not fair, considering the movie execution was fair in that it did what it was supposed to do: establish a new storyline for a new generation who have no connection to the Lucas mythology. It did it with some shark jumping moments, but it did it nonetheless. John Williams score as always was spot on, and I can easily say this movie falls almost completely flat and spiritless without him. Despite being way too long as most movies now in this era (are movies even really edited nowadays?) if you have never seen it before it keeps you interested, despite the short comings of the payoffs.

However, at the end this movie saddens me. As it becomes even more evident that Disney will milk this license until it is dry, the quality of content to come out will undoubtedly be diluted and it has already started. Say what you want about Lucas and his own marketing when the series was with him, but despite knowing that just like Disney he can release a movie every year and make a billion dollars for each one just on the license alone, he kept the original trilogy untouched for 15 years because I feel that he really did care about this story and his characters. And make no mistake, they are HIS characters. With this latest iteration, I don't know if the House of Mouse really feels that connected with Rey, Kylo, Finn and Poe. They are well researched very sellable commodities and easily replaceable again, whenever Disney decides to restart a new trilogy, likely sooner than later.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There are so many awful things in just film I can't wrap my head around it:
- the humour got a chuckle here and there but it was seriously Prequels level **** It will not age well.
- Poe was done so dirty with that plot line- he's been shown to be a competent leader; him not understanding the strategy makes no sense when you consider his years of service. Also his "she's not what I expected"- he **** serves under Princess Leia, Poe knows powerful women, don't project your misogyny onto good characters, Rian.
- Finn. Jesus, he was shafted so goddamn hard. His and Rose's plot line did absolutely nothing to drive the plot anywhere- such a waste of time. There was so much potential to explore about Finn and they chose to do nothing with him. - I will never forgive Rian for the rest of my life for making me watch Luke Skywalker stare dead eyed in the face at Rey as he drinks green sea cow **** juice.
- Luke has some okay scenes and the Crait scene was epic, and I cried at Luke and Leia's reunion. But I **** hated the way they explained away the fallout with Luke/Kylo. If Luke felt a moment of hatred flow through him, fine, that somewhat makes sense for him. However, the narrative doesn't frame it like that; rather it's done to shown Kylo as being sympathetic and rationalizing his attack. I don't think I'm explaining this right, but Luke's actions serve Kylo's character more than they serve Luke, and that really bothered me. Luke deserved more than that.
-Rey. Goddamn they **** Rey so badly in this film it honestly makes me so sad. She's the first female jedi protagonist and a plot that was supposed to be her finding her balance and place in the force became this redemption mission for a man she spoke to 3 times. What was supposed to be HER conflict with light and dark became Kylo's; she was just roped into his conflict without being given one of her own.
God they just let down Rey so hard in this, but they did that to a lot of characters.
-as a lifelong Star Wars fan, the "resolution" of killing
Snoke was the biggest **** YOU to fans who spent years waiting for an expansion of SW lore. Who is he? Where is he from? How is he connected? Now it's nothing. And this leads me to wonder: of Kylo is the driving force for all of the darkness in the galaxy, how is redemption? How
Is it even possible? The Emperor worked because he was this pillar that had to be toppled in the OT. Now it's Kylo? I personally think this movie showed Kylo to be too far gone and irredeemable, but I feel like they're still trying to make him sympathetic. I'm just so lost as to where the conflict is and who the villain is.
But yeah I felt like all of the harder potential from the first was lost in space with this one. Biggest disappointment of the year.

There are lots of flaws such as the story. It is probably worse then The Phantom Menace because lots of things don't make sense. Also (SPOILERS) villain dies to fast so that was a disappointment. That same scene is dedicated to ripping off the last Jedi. There is a lack of originality and I have seen star wars better then this. This movie does have really good effects though and it is fun to see. Then again the girl Rey is a bit of a Mary sue but hey gotta make it less confusing for the kids. I give it 5 out of 10 and I hope DISNEY learned their lesson and decides to make something good. I do fear for star wars. One more bad movie and they will stick to rouge one and han solo. A 2 and a half hour movie filled with little action sequences and no exciting light saber battles. They took a 30 year story and destroyed it with 1 movie. The visuals were very good however and it was a gorgeous movie to look at. The characters and their story lines were very underwhelming, even characters that I really enjoyed in the Force Awakens (Finn) disappointing me in this one. Movie could have been 30 minutes shorter with many, many unneeded scenes that had no business being in the movie. A lot of forced jokes that sometimes worked but usually didn't. The last 30 minutes of the movie was the best part in my opinion, had some memorable moments and finally a cool fight sequence. Overall a very disappointing movie after Force Awakens and Rogue One were both so good. Expand

But I was wrong. Despite not being a horrible movie, the last jedi is a remix of episodes IV, V and VI and an adittion of some plots with no interests in order to extend the long duration of the film (for example, Finn is a character with no importance in this new trilogy who cries out for dying and disappearing forever of star wars universe, and Poe is a cheap copy of Han Solo). The quality of the villains are totally missed (Kylo improves in relation with the episode VII, but he still has not explode), the script is quite simple (focused on kids and young people), and only the old guard (Luke and Leia) and a good Rey, try to rescue a film that kids and people who is not fan of the saga will enjoy too much, but an important percent of the real fans of the original episodes of star wars will be disappointed after watching it.

Including the prequels, despite the horrendous plot and dialogue. This film really dares me to consider continuing with the franchise anymore. From a plot that could've been avoided if the characters had talked to each other, to the sad portrayal and even slightly immature version of Luke. There is a lot to hate about it yes, but in order for this to be a proper review, I must bring up the good sides of the story. I did enjoy the cinematography on Crait and a very special scene between Luke and an 'Old Friend'.
Overall this film has a lot to fix and JJ is directing the next film so I say 'JJ, You're our only hope'.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Now, I'm going to try and be as level headed as possible when writing this review. I have this bad habit, when I see Star Wars movie in theaters I simply cannot look at the downsides, and Im always leaving thinking each movie was better than the last. However though I did enjoy this movie as a whole. There were some small issues, and big ones, such as the glaring and often quite annoying political correctness constantly shoved down the viewers throat. You can tell the difference between the George Lucas films, and the disney films. Not just in cgi, in this context its unimportant. The main thing being that forced political correctness is, well nonexistent in George's films. Now, I'm not praising the prequels here. However this cannot be ignored. Not ignoring the fact that the cast is mostly quite good, such as performances from Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver really standing out for better. Im not saying there is a problem with a diverse cast, in fact, it can make a movie better. However at times you can start to see the changes for worse. The cast in this movie is incredibly politically driven, all female characters have major roles in the plot. All major leaders in the resistance are female. Princess Leia, is no longer a princess but now a general. Along with Admiral Holdo also being a woman. Leaving only 3 main protagonists as men. Finn, Poe, and Luke. With countless antagonists being imperial whites. Who also happen to have clearly no idea what they are doing. Back to the female roles, Admiral Holdo's choices are, no matter what the lesson is trying to be, awful. Her choices where completely irrational and when the only person who attempts to make a difference is Poe. When he is literally and figuratively shot down by Leia and Admiral Holdo, they play it off as. Oh! He's just a rowdy boy, oh masculinity is so funny.

Ignoring the lesser important issue of forced political correctness. The plot itself, is, meh. To keep it simple 80% of the entire movie is rebel ships in space being picked off by the first order in a fight against time, so Finn, and newly introduced Rose have to find a codebreaker to hack first order technology that can track ships through lightspeed. A technology that has never appeared in a star wars movie. EVER! Meanwhile Luke and Rey are doing their own schenanigans on whatever planet The Force Awakens ended on. One key subplot regarding the Resistance, is the codebreaker thing I mentioned prior and the quest to get it turns into maybe one of the slowlest and most pointless feeling segments in Star Wars history. The entire sequence to get the codebreaker ends in Finn and Rose getting put in jail. Where they meet another code breaker, who, 30 minutes later, hands them to the first order. Whatever emotion that part was trying to convey, it only left me personally unsatisfied. Another issue, much shorter is my issue with the fate of Snoke. He just dies with no development. Creating a Return of the Jedi moment but instead of being the climax of the trilogy its only the middle act. So Snokes existence was entirely a placeholder for Kylo to just take over, moving on I guess....

In all the movie is riddled with seemingly useless plots, choices by the characters that are as stupid as a white girl in a horror movie, and politically forced agendas that can leave us with the fact that Star Wars will never be the same again.......

This is pretty much the most underwhelming Star wars movie to date and it includes the prequels as well. Walking out of the cinema, I had this empty feeling wishing they could have done much more given the screen time of the movie

In terms of plot, this movie does so very little and almost seems at times afraid to let you understand or get to know the characters better. It felt that Disney wanted to keep things ambiguous so that they could expand the universe in the future because they weren't sure at the moment how they were going to develop certain characters.

The editing of the movie also affected the final product in that it felt loosely stitched together. You could tell that there were various teams filming various parts separately and when it was put together and edited, the film lacked cohesiveness not to mention the countless plot holes that the film has.

The director has left this film and series in a state of absolute ambiguity just like our favorite characters in this franchise. It had it's moments but the marvel-fying of this movie just felt awkward and out of place like an overcooked piece of steak.

First off I liked the Force Awakens and I am not a hater of anything "new" star wars. The movie is visually stimulating and their are certainly some interesting and cool scenes. The problems however are numerous. They are treating the old cast as completely disposable. Han is dead. Luke is basically a weak old man who breast feeds from an alien. Leia can somehow survive the vacuum of space using the force? R2 and C3p0 are side notes. The characters we are left with besides Rey and Kylo are cardboard. Who cares about Poe, Finn or Rose - they are boring and they are meant to replace Han,Luke,Leia, Lando? Wow. I have no problem with a torch pass, but jeez. There are also many plot jumps and holes throughout film too numerous to list. I hope the last one saves it somehow. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I seriously think all the overwhelming positive user reviews must be paid Disney bots. I don't see how anyone watched The Force Awakens, which introduced loads of unanswered questions about the backstory of Snoke, Rey, etc, and came out of this film satisfied with the total lack of explanation and writer's cop-out. You can tell JJ Abrams was somehow involved in this trilogy, since the proverbial checks they wrote ultimately couldn't be cashed, ala "LOST." I am left wondering what "character development" most of these professional and user critics are talking about. Another 2 hours and 30 minutes of film and we don't know anything more about Rey and her impractically good lightsaber skills than we did after 2 hours and 15 minutes of Episode 7. Furthermore, we don't know anything more about Snoke, his motivations, backstory, etc. He's obviously been around for a while and faced some challenges....just look at that face. But we are left completely empty-handed. At least after Episode 7, we had the promise of learning more about these mysterious new characters. And don't act like we were just a bunch of rabid fans crafting crazy theories out of nothing. What was up with all of the Josh Gad/Daisy Ridley "who are Rey's parents" teaser videos last year? After Episode 8, I feel tremendously let down at the way all of that innuendo was pissed away over 2.5 hours. Aside from that missed potential, there are at least 3 showdowns in this film that could have been the most bad ass in Star Wars history, but were overwhelmingly short, poorly edited, and/or a bait & switch. The final showdown had me thinking "okay, this one sequence could definitely make the whole film worthwhile for me." And then they pulled the rug out from under it. I think that moment really sealed the deal. I won't even get started on the totally pointless "side quest" to the Casino planet which could have been edited out in its entirety and would have made 0 difference to any of the story. And a closing thought, what happened to awesome John Williams compositions for every Star Wars film? Even the prequel trilogies had Duel of the Fates, Across the Stars, Battle of the Heroes. The music is far from bad, but c'mon....I think this is a sign you aren't giving him much to work with, Kathleen Kennedy... Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I just feel... Empty. Basically, nothing of any consequence happened, whatsoever. Every major major plot thread was tossed out, and while I appreciate the attempt to bring something new to the table, I think it failed badly. Rey was boring and predictable, and the interesting possibility of her going to the dark side or going more grey was a completely blatant red herring. There were multiple character death fake outs, which simply existed to create cheap twists. Character motivations were vague at best, and non-existent at worst. There were tons of things going on, which mostly existed to pad runtime and make you feel like there was actually some sort of progress. The porgs literally served no movie purpose whatsoever, and weren't even introduced in any meaningful way. They just existed to sell plush toys for Disney. The only redeeming factors were Kylo Ren being an intense, layered, complex character, and Luke being equally well written. Additionally there was THAT great scene with Kylo and Rey. Those are the only things to redeem this movie for me. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Folks, you simply must embrace the fact that the magic of the original trilogy can never again be recreated - they were a product of love and passion. There was nothing to obstruct creative vision. No toy sales (at least not until RoTJ), no return on investment, no cooperate interference...
And once that is accepted, I can go into these new series of films and embrace them for what they are. It isn't a terrible movie. I am a sucker for mezmarizing visuals and technical achievements in films, and so I can forgive, at least somewhat, the glaring flaws in this movie. Narratively speaking, the story is disjointed, simply because of errors in pacing and the discombobulating bounce between settings and such make things feel complicated. There is no flow. Really, the new cast of characters which JJ focused most intensely on TFA to introduce, are flat, uninteresting, lack charisma and have little shared chemistry. With the original cast gone, it's difficult to envision a scenario which brings me back to this new group. Misplaced humor, character cameos, simply for the sake of throwing a bone at fans, and most of all, a Luke who would never (as we know him) abandon his friend and his cause to rot away in seclusion. It simply is too big a leap in uncharted waters for Luke Skywalker, and the very superficial subplot that is offered up to explain his new-found aversion to The Force and Jedi mastery is flimsy and nonsensical. I have to say this, don't care if it ruffles feathers...Rose is a terrible, useless character. Once these idiots realize that casting actors simply for the sake of diversity or advancing a progressive agenda stagnates character development, we can get back to business. Instead of something interesting, we get, "the first Asian American actress in a Star Wars movie". Never mind the fact that the potential for good, contributing characters is sacrificed simply to satisfy the goal of "first", or to "make history". It's ridiculous. Cast whomever is best for the part, ignore their heritage and gender. Political critique out of the way, I'll leave some final thoughts. Leave expectations at the doorstep. Don't think you'll see any magic, don't believe you'll be enchanted by this installment, like experienced in the OT. Enjoy it for what it's worth - visual stimulation, war, epic combat scenes, and the occasional, brief, bittersweet moment with the fallen star, outgoing cast of characters we all grew to love from the OT.
**EDIT
I for got to add - if you're bewildered by rave critical reviews, it's no mystery. Critic reviews are greatly influenced these days by whatever political narrative is being pursued by progressives. This film was a slam dunk in terms of progressive themes. Of course critics will sing praises, regardless of how well made the film is. The abandonment of classic archetypal elements is the pitfall of these new installments, or at least a contributing factor.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Made an account just to write about this movie. What an absolute disappointment. "The director took risks" is a good way of saying that the director went in directions that made little to no sense. The only excitement in this movie was seeing how kylo ren's story line played out, and that was weak too. The fact that this movie currently has an 86 on metacritic makes me completely skeptical of movie reviews as a collective. There are parts in this movie that are insanely cool, but those parts are lost in a sea of weird plot turns and a weak narrative that is largely based on hyperbole. If you split the two main narratives of this movie in half, one was a complete waste of time while the other lead up to nowhere. To end this review I'm just gonna say, they made luke skywalker a complete loser in this movie and Disney is going to drive this franchise into the ground. Expand

Star Wars Episode VIII is by some strange power on level with the prequels. While the reason for this isn't related to bad cgi or annoying characters there are still plenty of moments that lead to this film's downfall. The side stories,Star Wars Episode VIII is by some strange power on level with the prequels. While the reason for this isn't related to bad cgi or annoying characters there are still plenty of moments that lead to this film's downfall. The side stories, pacing and run time all lead to a horrid abomination of a film that leaves a bitter taste in the mouth of the viewer.

Most of the plot of the movie can be summarized in a few sentences. This is why the plot mostly revolves around side stories to pat the run time and add depth to the story. However Episode VIII creates these side stories in the worst way possible. Multiple sub plots in the movie lead to barely any actual effect in the story. Compared to previous films in the series where side plots are introduced these sub stories while intercepting never lead anywhere.

The second gripe I have with the movie is it's pacing and flow. When creating a story the plot needs to follow the basic formula. Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action and Conclusion. The flow of this movie feels more along the lines of Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, Climax, Falling Action, Climax, Conclusion. Overall The plot feels very misguided and leads into the worst part of the movie; the length.

Star Wars Episode VIII has the longest running time out of any Star Wars. At first this isn't so bad I mean hey long doesn't always mean bad just like how short doesn't mean rushed. But The Last Jedi is not long for the right reasons. The show feels like it's trying to fit in much more than it needs. It feels like the director is in a game where he has to give his work to another writer after 10 minutes. Eventually he has 1 minute left and scrambles to fit all of his remaining ideas left even though the story could have wrapped up 3 minutes ago. Overall the movie is very rushed and leaves you feeling like you just want it to end.

Now while all I've done so far is bash Episode VIII the movie is still fun; sometimes. The few fight scenes are entertaining. The jokes while mostly falling short are sometimes funny. And a few cgi creatures actually look appealing to the eye. The movie isn't the worst of 2017. By no means it's not even a bad movie it's just OK. Now don't get me wrong it's not one of those inoffensive movies that doesn't add or take away anything; far from it. Star Wars Episode VIII is extremely offensive at times but the action and plot changes spliced throughout the story keep it from dawning the rank of bad.

Poor character develope in addition to more useless characters and poorly timed humor. If that wasn't bad there was a nonstop touch and go with this film, middle of action and cut to a close up of characters whispering. Just get to the point, this film beat around the bush and I honestly started to feel bored in a starwars film. Yes you read it literally bored. Might I also add that everything is just getting ridiculous looking in scale, snokes command ship is like the opening scene from space balls, starwars has managed to parody a parody of itself. Speaking of useless characters snoke has become just that in this film, a tool that could have been absolutely amazing has become a useless under developed bad guy again. Speaking of which this film almost entirely takes place in space and hardly has ground elements so your stuck looking at the same volley of bombardment from this useless gigantic capital ship and no other first order ships can come and intercept them? Your telling me the bad guys who have practically taken back the Galaxy can't send a ship to cut them off. Finn was great, his supporting actress was useless and not as an actress just as a character, it was horrible she and snoke are jar jar worthy. Rey, well, likeable as always and she has kept the stiff unsure of herself approach but adorable as always. Carrie Fisher was spot on and awesome. Luke's character hardly had a decent role but when he was there it was great, for the first film being all about finding Luke they really under utilized him as a character in this film. Captain phasma, again completely useless and honestly I don't want to get flak for this but it's seriously just an equality role, just another useless strong female for a film that gets under utilized, should be cut entirely. Much like the female admiral who I cannot remember, that's how useless and under developed she was, she takes control of the ship and if they WOULDNT HAVE KILLED AKBAR he could have easily been in control, like really why introduce some new character that has no arc from previous films when you have the opportunity to utilize a fan favorite, like again just an equality actor. So what are my final thoughts well if you like episode 1 and 2 "prequals" then this is the film for you, this is my least favorite starwars film that was all visual and no substance. Rogue one was better.... Just saying. Expand

Positives: Good effects and acting. Hamill, Driver and Ridley go all out here.
Negatives: Dumb plot(s), bad story arc (no real tension built up to a timely climax). The First Order General and Captain Phasma are totally pointless here.

Although George Lucas often wrote painful scripts and chose dud actors at least he was a master editor who could deliver a well paced movie. Not so in TLJ. And its over 2 hours!!!! Other: There’s humour but its the mumblecore variety, nothing quote worthy. The great comic relief duo of C3PO and R2D2 is totally absent here - they are the best characters that Lucas copied from Kurosawa.

The tone is all over the place due to excessive attempts to shoehorn "Guardians of the Galaxy" style humor in every scene. The film is visually stunning though and a few performances are emotional and genuinely funny. Last Jedi is an apparent departure from the Star Wars that we all knew and IMO it's going to pretty yet shallow and boring places.

I can't get over these sites trying to blame the fans for not liking this movie. I love the Star Wars franchise and actually somewhat enjoyed The Force Awakens (even though it was a clone of A New Hope) and Rogue One as well. Now lets take a look at The Last Jedi which somehow every critic seems to be overjoyed by. The humor at times was fun but many times was overused and out of place. Now let's look at the goofy and once again overused CGI (just like the prequels) through out the film. The Leia force float scene was awful, the running PT-ST was terrible, the characters riding on the back of "Clifford the Big Yellow Dog" looked like something that belonged in a children's cartoon, and the x-wing U-turn with space skidmarks (wasn't that in SPACEBALLS?), common guys. Wasn't it J.J. that said we were trying to get back to the way the old movies were done. I can't believe the critics didn't even mention the pacing. It's all over the place. I'm not even gonna complain about Luke. It's a sad way to portray the character and it's not what the fans wanted (even Hamill himself didn't seem to comfortable over these decisions). You don't give fans what they want and they will hate your movie. I'm pretty sure that's a universal reaction for any fan of any series. It's not just Star Wars fanboys that react that way. I personally didn't hate the way Luke was handled but I understand the reaction. Another thing, all these sites that have noticed the terrible fan rating on rotten tomatoes have not seemed to want to point out all the terrible user reviews on IMDB. It has also been hammered on here as well . The fans do not like this movie and cannot understand how the critics actually do. In fact many fans think you folks are getting paid not only to give the reviews your giving it, but also this,"fans are villains", damage control **** your pulling is just plain wrong. People grew up loving these movies, being mostly disappointed by the prequels, finding faith again in Force Awakens and Rogue One, and then ... being handed this poorly constructed movie. There are good moments in this movie!!! Don't get me wrong. It's not a complete disaster but honestly it's not great either. I loved the ship destroying the Empire Ships by using light speed. I liked the standoff between Kylo and Luke. Luke dusting off the shoulder was fitting and subtle enough to fit the style of humor these movies are known for. Overall though when I left the theater I felt very 50/50 over this movie and 50/50 does not sit well alongside the excellence of Star Wars. Even a puppet yoda ghost can't raise this film above a solid 50 or 5 out of 10 rating. Benicio Del Toro's forced stutter, a BB-8 Empire edition version robot (because why not?), cartoonish CGI (especially in the casino scenes), Rey's parents, no Snoke backstory, and this ridiculous, now love triangle (what are we trying for here,TWILIGHT ?). Yes I know Luke ,Han, and Leia seemed like it could have been going that route in the originals but we don't need that overused idea. This movie is FLAWED. The fact the critics are so oblivious to this really leaves fans to wonder if the media is being honest here and now that your blaming the fan base, oh you guys are making yourselves look like your collecting a check from Mickey Mouse himself. Look everyone is entitled to their opinion but when multiple sites are banning together to start making fans out to be bad guys over a poor movie, there is something wrong here. Either that or are current generation of critics just don't get it. As for the people giving this movie 10s or 0s you are all TROLLS of the worst kind. Neither of these scores are fair for this movie or almost anything that is media related. A 0 or a 10 should be reserved for the worst of the worst and the best of the best and shouldn't be handed out like candy on halloween. No wonder no one wants to take fans serious when we review things. Disney, Johnson, and Critics, this movie is bad. Deal with it. Expand

No real Star Wars feeling, which was actually present in the previous movie VII.
At least Kylo Ren has improved (not visually).
Childish humor.

I'm a star wars fan who was genuinely excited by 'The Force Awakens' and very let down by 'The Last Jedi'. It wasn't the worst movie ever but it wasn't great. First off - who let Lucas write again? Didn't we decide that was a terrible idea? The dialogue is bad (and yes I know Star Wars films traditionally have cheesy ass lines) and most of the jokes are tone deaf and/or fall flat. Rose's "beautiful lousy place" line was so bad it was incredible. Kylo Ren (arguably the best part of the film) keeps saying "kill the past" and yet all this movie does is recycle the same Star Wars tropes over and over and over again. I couldn't believe the end was ANOTHER rebels-trapped-in-rebel-hold-while-AT-ATs-attack (Hoth did it better). I understand that "The Force Awakens" had to gently get the audience to trust the Star Wars franchise again by lovingly following the old movies but now that you've got us - could you please do something more interesting and new? In general the cartoonification of it all was annoying. I don't need that many stupid creatures. I don't need General Hux made up to look more sickly and evil than in the 'Force Awakens' and then have everybody fling him around like a comic relief puppet. One of the joys of Star Wars is when the writers can walk the line between serious drama and realizing its a space opera. This movie's slapstick stupidity drowned the few dramatic pearls. I have so many things to complain about - the editing and pacing of the film was terrible. Finn and Rose's story was completely pointless. The force was used to do tricks that I guess were suppose to be cool (surviving space?) but came off as dumb. I usually agree with the critics reviews but now I'm wondering if Disney slipped them some cash. I'm writing this review in the hopes that maybe....maybe somebody is listening to the audience reviews (and not just writing them off as angry fanboys). Please use the feedback to make episode IX better!!!! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Stars Wars as a franchise has hit the same problem all episodic franchises (Star Trek, The Walking Dead, the WWE) eventually hit, the story has been told so often by so many diferent people, writers run in to walls trying to keep it fresh. As such, rather than work on a thoughtful retelling (which will label them as copycats) or working within the mythology to bring about logical change, they instead settle on the swerve. While a swerve can be done to great effect and still work with in narrative (The Original Planet of the Apes, The Sixth Sense) all too often it is used to hide a poor plot or lack of a real direction in a story. I would argue that is what Rian Johnson did in the Last Jedi. *Spoilers*
Having Luke become a bitter and despondent character was a bold move, and Hamill, to his credit, did an excellent job with the portrayal. However, it was a change that did little to help the story and was promptly forgotten about when he suddenly changed his mind in a swerve that seemed only there to allow the epic battle to take place. The betrayal of Snoke by Ren was a swerve that mirrored the betrayal of Return of Jedi, and while making Kylo a better character did so at the expense of The Force Awakens. (To be fair, I didn't care for the Force Awakens, so seeing that movie cheapened wasn't a great loss) It hurts the overall narrative of all the stories in a franchise when such things happen. If you doubt it, try watching the Godfather III. The swerve to make the entire side quest to the Casino meaningless was, quite frankly, baffling. It seemed as if Rian Johnson literally had no idea what to do with the characters and the screen time put into it could have been spent elsewhere to much greater effect. Putting aside the short (albeit cringe-worthy) shot of Leia's survival in space. The swerve of her surviving seemed to cheapen the moment. Epecially when you consider the only Leia we can get from this point is some CGI painting. Needless to say, by the time Luke found his way to the the resistance, it was painfully evident that some swerve was coming. And Rian Johnson all but used the most painful, laziest, most overused swerve of them all....it was just a dream. I know, technically it was a force projection, but it all amounted to lucid dream. Luke wasn't there, it was stalling tactic, and he was ok. Except he wasn't. Throwing yet another swerve in, Luke dies, becuase... well..no reason. Just kill the past as the movie says (except for Leia). I think that proffesional critics gave the film good reviews because anytime a movie can suprise them, it is a welcome change. What they seemed to forget is a story needs more than a plot twist to be good.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's better than the VII, but it's not a great movie. Beautiful, sometime original, with some fulgurance, but without a soul. What's baffling me is, that the most useless character in this new Trilogy, Rose, is one of the most well presented between them all... In like, 5 minutes, you know everything you need to appreciate her, she's honest, brave, has a strong temperament, she's devastated by the death of her sister, but willing to save/help the other in her honor, etc.

Why, oh why, didn't have they done the same for Rey, Finn, Kylo and Poe? Seriously, i don't care about them because i don't know them and i don't relate to them. Even after Two films, i know that Rey is an orphan, that she has follow BB-8 into the resistance because of... Han ? Maybe? And that she just want to save Kylo because of ... Han ? No, seriously, i don't know.

Finn, oh Finn, what a pity, he could have been so great, imagine just a second. Twenty year before the VII, Finn and Phasma are young children, trained like soldier, brainwashed, mentally broke to become obedient killer. Phasma and Finn befriend in adversity, but they choose two different path, Finn only want to be discret, to become invisible, Phasma know that being the best is the only way to stop the abuse. Twenty years later, Finn enter in Phasma's unit, and he discover what she had become, a ruthless killer.

But no, Phasma is a laughable caracter without a past, without motive, Finn is only an honest and gentle coward that try to escape, everything he try fail, and everytime sheer luck or someone else save him. It's saddening. He got a bit better in this movie, but his part of the plot serve nothing and fail. So...

Rey i already talked, i appreciate her a little more, she's an orphan, she wants to find her place in the galaxy, to know where she come from. It's okayish, she has some great moment in the movie.

Poe is the best pilot in the resistance, beyond human, but he is the worst officer. He just abandonned BB-8 in the VII, and got half is crew killed to destroy one ship... And that's all i knew of him. Kylo is ridiculous, less in this one, but seriously, why can't he use the freaking force when he fight? Those red guards, he could have break their bones in a twist, push them trough a wall, make them suffocate and....No... he only fight with his light saber because it make things more difficult, and it make the scene less impressive and less enjoyable... The part where he is linked to Rey is great, but it lacks something... And Kylo lack something, he want to become a second Vador, but why ? Did Snoke used a trick to make a false "ghost of Anakin" appear to young Ben and drive him to the dark side, telling him is destiny is to be the Supreme Ruler of all living being ?

Snoke is a NPC with a quest, he appear, tell Kylo to find a map, then to find Rey, and then he disappear. No past, no motive, nothing...

Luke, it's not my Luke, it's not George Lucas or Mark Hamill's Luke, but it's a good Luke, an original one at least, i can live with that. I hoped he made a greater impact, and a most impressive show of strength, but it was entertaining.

Leia use actively the force for the first time, not how i imagine it, but why not, the special effect where pretty bad, but the scene was not that incoherent. A human can survive in space for a minute, Leia is a powerful untrained jedi, so she can survive longer without massive injuries. Her being unconsicous was necessary to the BAD plot, because Poe would have known there was a master plan and half the movie would have cease to exist, so... But, i need to know, was their a sas somewhere or a shield? because when they open the door to the command center room, the corridor should have depressurized!

And more importantly, if gravity don't interfere with light speed, has seen with the millenium falcon getting through the starkiller shield directly into the atmosphere in the VII, why don't they use x-wing has missile ? They have hundreds of them (has seen on Leia computer at the start), they could send two by First order destroyer, even if the first order produce interdictor cruiser, they work by creating gravity around them, soooo, freewin for the resistance, hell yeah.

Sorry for the long text, and for my english, it's not my native language, and i rarely practice.

Also the twist of not knowing what is going to happen is nice. The bad is that there are so many plot holes and inconsistency that it kinda makes it hard to like the movie. You leave the movie theather not feeling great, because there was no real point or indication on what will happen in the next movie. It is also like X-men 3 where they kill off a whole bunch of characters, so rather than to build upon the movie seems like it try to breakdown everything worked in the previous movie. Also the plot holes mess with your brain so it hard to believe that the concurrent scene is plausible. You also kinda start hating the heros, because they makes things worse than better.

After thinking about it, this is not a film for people wanting hope or wanting logic. It based on a writer hubris, who believes it is his job to antagonize fans and take away what they like about star wars. I find that has what cause fans to be upset because in a way it betray their zealots over their idea of what star wars is. This further complicates things as Rian is only the writer of one star wars and abbrams it taking back the mantle. This is the mad scientist working on the ip without care for the effects. It is the Batman & Robin of Star Wars pretty much.

The first time I saw the film, I was disappointed - kind of ‘meh’ on it, not as militantly anti-TLJ as many are, but still underwhelmed. A second viewing (this time with a 7 year-old in tow) changed my view somewhat. Here are the positives: it doesn’t go the way you think, the cinematography is amazing, it’s visually arresting (even Snoke looked great, and I’m a real tough sell on pure CGI stuff...I hated Tarkin and young Leia in Rogue One), and there are some really great, iconic moments. Yes, the story may be a little overstuffed with characters and subplots; yeah, definitely some jerking around with the lore, and the tone wobbles a bit in places. But like the Force doesn’t belong to the Jedi, Star Wars doesn’t belong to me, it belongs to my kid now...and he liked it better than TFA. I think anyone saying it’s worse than the prequels is just being hyperbolic. The Phantom Menace I very nearly walked out on, and the subsequent films didn’t improve much upon that piece of bantha poodoo. The Last Jedi is not what critics have made of it, for sure, but nowhere near deserving of 0s and 1s. The truth is, as ever, somewhere in the middle. Expand

I want to tackle a different topic: why are critics giving this mediocre film such high praise? In current North American culture, we have three things going on here that boosts The Last Jedi to unreasonable heights.

1. Star Wars nostalgia: As long as a Star Wars film is not too terrible, it gets a plus +1 because of the nostalgia factor.

2. Disney domination: The critics are unwilling to disparage a Disney flagship franchise like the Star Wars, due to the company's complete dominance over the movie industry.

3. PC culture: Critics are ideological fellow-travelers of the 'enlightened' Hollywood talking heads who push PC culture down our throats, and they always give an extra mark for any movie that features 'strong, independent' women. This is also how Wonder Woman got rave reviews.

NO SPOILER REVIEW

First off, I think this film needs to be judged on two merits; one being a film made to entertain and the other being a Star Wars film made to continue an established narrative. This is where the divide is created between the two audiences and why the disparity of reviews exists.

Judging the film as a product, purely to entertain and turn a profit for the studio; The Last Jedi couldn't have done a better job (it is Disney after all). However, as a Star Wars film that continues it's now epic saga; it falls rather flat on its face.

AS A STAND ALONE FILM: 7/10

The Last Jedi presents a serviceable plot with interesting and memorable characters, be it for their personalities, striking designs or otherwise memorable quips and development throughout the film. The cinematography is stunning at times and can command your attention effortlessly; which should not come as a surprise from a huge budget production. The cast also delivers some fantastic performances, such as Adam Drivers role of Kylo Ren and Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker to name a couple.

The writing however, feels conflicted at times, with the film struggling to be decisive about what genre it wants to be; with some displays of awkward comedy, as if to appeal to an audience with little attention spans. It's cheesy, feeling like a parody or comedy sketch at times that overstays it's welcome. That aside, the plot is coherent but isn't afraid to deviate to challenge the audience and defy predictions; it keeps things rolling and builds tension. The characters for the most part, felt genuine and had clear priorities and goals, all done without lengthy exposition that interrupts the main plot; although it is worth noting that the sub-plot to this film is an inverse of that statement, ultimately being shallow and a clear case of raising social awareness with barely any subtlety involved; leaving the impression that the audience is unable to decipher hidden meanings and nods to real world conflicts/issues.

Overall, The Last Jedi is a solid film that can entertain and appeal to a wide audience; with stunning visuals and great performances held together by a captivating narrative.

AS A STAR WARS FILM 3/10

If you want to know my credibility, I grew up on the original movies and have seen the prequels as well as the animated "Clones Wars" TV show and was an avid player of Star Wars Battlefront (the PS2 versions (the good ones)) I'm not a rabid fan, but I respect the series and enjoy what it offers. This film, however, is easily the worst and I don't think many should be surprised, even compared to Episode VII and Rouge One.

It's a mess of in your face politics, pretty lights and colors and of course; marketable cute background props. Episode VII wanted to reinvent classic Star Wars for the modern era, whereas Episode VIII wants to sweep it all under the rug. "Let the past die, kill it if you have to" -Kylo Ren, TLJ Trailer. It's an obvious middle finger to the fans of the franchise and from an artistic point of view, it's murder suicide. The political side, ruins the film and has no place in a "science FICTION" production; and I've heard the "feminist propaganda" label being thrown at this movie, but in all honesty I liked Rae. Seeing women as leads in huge productions is a nice change; just very disappointing that they are done with so low effort and can be forced to meet a diversity quota. Again, REAL world politics has no place in a FICTIONAL world people look to, to escape reality. The plot makes little sense when previous installments are factored in. (Minor spoilers ahead) The First Order from Episode VII are here, but for some reason are stronger and more powerful, which makes no sense; as the empire were fractured after Episode VI and then the first order rose from the ashes and got king hit in Episode VII but yet STILL out number and out gun the "resistance" by Episode VIII. At this rate, the First Order/Empire may as well be that kid on the playground that always had a trump card for everything during imaginary play time.

Then there's Luke Skywalker who has transitioned between films (off screen mind you) into the very opposite of his original character; Rae may as well have not even trained to be a Jedi since she's essentially a Jedi master after a couple of on screen minutes of training and Leia, well, you'll just have to see the movie. Meanwhile the rest of the cast are ultimately throwaways bar Kylo Ren who is more or less the same as he was in Episode VIII.

As a Star Wars film, it feels like a compilation of Saturday Night Live sketches and fan fiction that tries so hard to go against the norm to be original but forgets that "new" does not always equal "good".

Overall, disappointing and a deterant to see any future Star Wars films

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Although it wasn't necessarily a bad movie, it falls severely low of expectations in terms of writing. The movie is riddled with plot holes or stupidity that detract from its overall authenticity, such as when Admiral Holdo decides to not tell Poe her plan for no apparent reason, causing him to mutiny. A 1/3 of the movie rested on this one plot point, making it seem a bit stupid. Some characters, such as Admiral Holdo, were superfluous, as she just sacrifices herself by ramming the First Order's command ship. This felt forced and unnatural, as it feels like this could have been done with an autopilot, making the movie less enjoyable. This could have also been done by a more established character, such as Admiral Ackbar, as this would have had a deeper emotional impact on the audience, as Holdo wasn't around long enough and didn't do anything to gain the audience's sympathy.

The movie also inserts political themes, such as animal cruelty and the arms trade, crudely, by simply stating them as wrong instead of showing their negative effects and letting the audience draw their own conclusions, such as in the Casino scene on Canto Bight. This destroys any tension that had previously been built up and breaks the pace of the movie, making it much less enjoyable to watch.

Many people were upset about the revelation that Rey's parents were scavengers. Although I personally think this sent a good message and made the Star Wars universe feel less small, the writers break the principle of Chekhov's gun, as Rey's lineage was repeatedly hinted as being significant in TFA. This makes the reveal unsatisfying for the audience. Philosophically, the way the Force was implemented was flawed. The movie stated that as one side of the Force grows stronger, the other will automatically grow with it, which is the reason given for why Rey is so powerful. This means that, ultimately, nothing any of the characters do matters, as the Force will simply empower the opposite side to balance itself out, removing any significance any individual’s actions have. This also raises the question of whether any of the characters have any real free will, as the Force is using them to be in equilibrium. This removes any weight from Rey’s or Kylo’s decisions, as it is implied that this is the Force’s will, so it is inevitable.

All in all, the Last Jedi could have been worse, but the story and the themes it was exploring were deeply flawed in both concept and execution.

The plot is pretty stupid and contrived. On the other hand the film is pretty well directed and shot, most of the performances are between OK and good and the film is pretty enjoyable, even if the enjoyment is ironic sometimes.

Rey still continuing to be a mary sue = bs. Snoke death = BS. Kylo is still weak and whiny. Luke is portrayed horribly and the whole casion arc and Rose is awful

The result is a surprisingly ponderous outing - more like Lost in Space than Star Wars. The way characters seem to talk at each other rather than to each other is both frustrating and unengaging. Better summarised elsewhere as a sort of 'galactic wheel-spin', none of the array of often irrelevant sub-plots ever lead anywhere, playing the 'it isn't what you thought' card again and again, but crucially without bringing anything truly new to the table. Because of this, its extremely glib treatment of the material often falls flat and its self-aware humour tends to undermine what dramatic tension remains. While the film is at pains to 'throw away' and 'kill' the past mythology built up by George Lucas, what there is leans heavily on its tropes and imagery. The final image of dreaming youth almost suggests that what we have here is a multi-million dollar fan film - but one that forgets to inspire the same dreams and feelings in its audience. Since the film leaves you not knowing what the resistance or the first order are for and really not caring anyway, the story just seems to fade and patter out (just like one of its principle characters), rather than leave you wanting more.
