Are Star Wars fans not allowed to like Star Wars? Why is everybody pooping on this movie? Unlike the "Force Awakens" this movie had an original plot. There are many small complaints I could make, but they are only small complaints.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all, I'm glad that the story isn't a rip-off from Episode 5. After watching Episode 7, I thought Episode 8 would have a lot of similarities with Episode 5. I became more confident with my assumption after watching the last trailer when there was a scene of Walkers on a white surface (which I thought would be a copy of the Hoth Battle in Episode 5.). On the opening crawl of the movie, it says the Ressistance were being invaded by the First Order, which I thought is a sign that the movie would be like Episode 5 when the Rebel base was invaded by the Empire.

It turned out, the story is almost completely different from Episode 5 and I was so glad it wasn’t a rip-off like Episode 7. They have brought something totally fresh and new to the Star Wars franchise. It’s filled with complexity, character transformations, and a lot of plot twists.

Speaking of plot twist, there’s a hell lot of them. For instance, I didn’t expect Snoke to be killed so early. I thought he would survive until the last movie (Episode 9). I was also really surprised that Rey’s parents turned out to be ordinary people. No one ever thought of that ! I love how Kylo and Luke told the same story about the murder attempt in different perspectives. There’s a bit of noir element in the story.

I find the directing and writing style to be rather childish. Lots of camera zoom-ins, lots of comical jokes (which is not my type of humor), lots of parodies. I would say it’s made to be enjoyable for young kids, more so than the other Star Wars movies.

Some scenes and features are quite unnecessary for the plot. For instance, the story could’ve carried on the same way without having the casino scene. I also think a lot of the things are too overdone and some are obviously made to please the fans. Leia flying in space is too excessive and it makes force-users seem less exclusive. The part when Walkers were attacking Luke's hologram is too childish and it makes me question Johnson's maturity. And why did Luke suddenly died for no reason ? It doesn't make sense. Spirit Yoda summoning lightning is just too much for me to handle.

The characters are made sillier and more naive in this movie. For instance, after Luke was watching a nostalgic holographic video of Leia asking for help, he decided to change his mind immediately. It's amazing how a single nostalgic moment can radically change his decision. The part when was Snoke teasing Kylo constantly is also very childish.

Another complain that I have is the design. For instance, Snoke's room is too bright and cheerful-looking instead of dark and gloomy like what villain lairs should look like. I also don't like how Snoke was wearing a golden-colored clothes instead of black like in Episode 7. Some clothes in the casino planet look too much like in real life for a Star Wars movie. Overall, there are a lot of things to love and hate about this movie. I love the acting performance, the plot twists, the cinematography, and its innovation. On the other hand, it's filled with too much fan service, has some useless characters and plots (if not, annoying), and the directing/writing style is too naive for me to handle. I also think the movie could've been a lot better with shorter duration, especially with the absence of casino scenes.… Expand

I remember almost physically flinching in the theatre and wondering if it was all a really bad (and belated) April Fool's joke. I've watched it countless times (much as I did The Phantom Menace) in the hope that it'll get better with repeat viewing, but it doesn't. Look, I totally understand that there are problems with The Last Jedi and Rian Johnson made some unwanted decisions. I'm gonna leave it at this, the movie has potential if the movie was edited differently and certain scenes were cut out andLook, I totally understand that there are problems with The Last Jedi and Rian Johnson made some unwanted decisions. I'm gonna leave it at this, the movie has potential if the movie was edited differently and certain scenes were cut out and some deleted scenes were placed in the place of those scenes. If the casino scene sequence was cut, and Rose ended up being a hacker who was once a criminal and gets them onto Snoke's ship. So, with that there would be extra time to insert the deleted scene when Rey runs to the village she thought was in danger and has a nice dialogue scene with Luke. The Last Jedi, while I didn't like it at first, could've been made better if a few changes were made that would've been easy to make. I'm not part of the toxic fan base that claims this ruined Star Wars, I just think that Rian Johnson would've been a great anthology film director and J.J. Abrams should've directed the whole trilogy. This is actually what I think LucasFilm wanted, and J.J. didn't want to direct them, good thing he's back. So all in all, The Last Jedi is a decent and confidently made, but fails to remember that part of making Star Wars is fan service. I want to see Rian Johnson come back and prove himself with an anthology film, which I believe he is better suited for. Maybe bring him on to write the Obi-Wan movie with Ewan McGregor and let him make an Oscar worthy movie with good action, like Looper.… Expand

It's pretty laughable to see all this negative reviews stating that this is the worst Star Wars movie ever, that they ruined Luke's character, that there are too many jokes, that none of the fan theories were true...Guys, calm down you areIt's pretty laughable to see all this negative reviews stating that this is the worst Star Wars movie ever, that they ruined Luke's character, that there are too many jokes, that none of the fan theories were true...Guys, calm down you are exaggerating, A LOT.

Obviously this isn't a perfect movie, nor a great movie, I personally think that it's far from being as good as Empire, New Hope or even The Force Awakens, but this is still a really competent movie in many aspects including the writing, the acting, the special effects and the score.

The acting is really solid, mainly because of the direction, let's admit it, Mark Hamill is a very average actor, but thanks to a good direction, he gave a really good performance, same thing with most of the cast. The writing is competent, granted, not great or anything. The visual effects are amazing just like the previous movie and the score...Come on, it's a Star Wars score.

Let's now get into some of the flaws:

First, there are pointless subplots that could've been cut or could've been shorter, like the Casino scene, everyone says it's a pointless scene and I agree.

Then we have the character development, most of the characters don't get any development and they basically stay the same as in the last movie, I didn't learn anything new from characters like Finn, Poe or Snoke who are wasted in this movie. New characters like Rose are really forgettable (I don't hate the actress like many of you a**holes did, she did the best with the material she had which was very poor, and yes, I agree that this character did the stupidest thing in the movie). But we get a new character arc for Luke and Rey. Hate me, but I loved Luke's character. It seems like all of you expected a Luke like from the comic books or other non-film Star Wars media, that's an overpowered wise man, but that would've been the most boring and predictable thing in the world, so it's refreshing to see this character in that "leave me alone, I'm tired of all that Jedi stuff" mood. He was honestly the best character of the movie, the best written and developed character.

So, that's The Last Jedi for me. It's not a great movie, it's a really good movie from a filmmaking perspective. I like Star Wars movies, I'm not a hardcore fan so I could give a flying sh*t about the comic books and all that stuff, what really matters to me are the movies and The Last Jedi is certainly a really good entry, not as good as The Force Awakens or Empire, but certainly BETTER than the prequels, you wanna know why? There's no bad acting, there's no cringeworthy writing, there's no "I don't like sand", there's no overuse of CGI that makes the movie look like a Playstation game...So yes, hate this review all you want, but you must stop using your fanboy glasses and admit that this is far from being the worst Star Wars movie, RELAX!… Expand

Pretty ridiculous. There are a lot of unesccesry & wtf moments. An example of that, is when Rose Tico nearly kills Finn after he was about to risk his life inorder to many lives. And then Rose kisses Finn while people are dying in the background.

If you take "Star Wars" from the title this isn't a bad movie / romp for a Saturday evening.... However if you look at it as a star wars fan it has its flaws / plot holes. After the promising return with The Force Awakens, this is a slight letdown. It's comes across as a movie of scenes (some great ones, some weird ones), as the story is quite fragmented.

Compared to the 9th episode, it's amazing, and, imo this is the best of the entire trilogy. It's like another example for the Watchmen-effect. The film ages like fine wine. At least, this movie got huge balls, great action sequences, a brave plot and some story as well!!! Kylo's character was still great, Rey was still annoying af, and Luke was still destroyed in many aspects. But for some reason, the film feels great. It works. And it provided an excellent foundation for a never-done 9th episode. It's flawed, really, but not a mess. There was some complete **** as well in the movie (Holdo, Canto Bight), but at least they weren't pointless. Overall, I'd say it's much better than we remember, but still "only" a good movie. And I can't believe I'm writing this, but now I almost agree with the critics who praised The Last Jedi "anno". And it gets a 7 from me. Somehow. Don't ask. No idea why.… Expand

There is a gem of a REALLY good movie buried in this mess. The whole thing is so cluttered by poorly structured storytelling that constantly shifts tone. It's a very hard film to become emotionally invested in.

This Movie is really "different" to the other Star Wars Movies, but not in den good Way. One Part of the Movie is bad, the other Part ist good. I really like Star Wars, but this Movie is only a 6/10, maybe a 7/10 when you are a real Fanboy.

Visually at least the movie is stunning, easily the best in the franchise, and there are some great action sequences throughout the movie. When watching it at the cinema it was easy to get swept along for the ride and I can’t say I wasn’t at least somewhat entertained overall. Unfortunately The Last Jedi simply has too many faults to be considered a great, or even good, movie. Even as someone who is only a minor fan of the franchise I was severely disappointed with the handling of Luke Skywalkers character (he does little but mope around for much of the running time) and the awkward attempts to add some “Marvel” style humour to proceedings not only fell flat but often undermined key events. The number of plot holes, even by the standards of a sci-fi movie, is also staggering. I won’t list them all here, there are plenty of YouTube videos and websites that’ll take you through them all if you so wish, but it’s hard to believe a whole team of writers failed to see so many issues.

If you’re looking for a narratively coherent movie you’re looking in the wrong place, particularly if you’re a big fan of the franchise, but there is some entertainment to be had if you’re willing to just go along with whatever the movie throws at you.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Quite enjoyed this movie, the space battles and many twists and turns, etc. However I kind of agree with a lot of the haters. Luke Skywalker is not the same character we grew to follow in the original films and I completely understand Mark Hamill's disappointment about how was written. I can't equate the daydreaming farmboy from Tattooine with a grumpy old man living on a rock in the middle of nowhere. The Leia spacewalk drew groans from the audience, as did the cow-milking scene. Snoke was killed cheaply before we even knew anything about him, as was Phasma. The resistance is basically dead now; the 30 surviving people on the millenium falcon with no military hardware are not anything you would call a threat worth bothering about, so the first order have already won. There seemed to be a lot of diversity box-ticking with regard to the casting (in real life the resistance would be like any military organisation in history - young men going off to fight given orders by old men). I also found it noticeable that the first order was all caucasian, in stark contrast to the much more diverse resistance. I wonder what the reaction would have been if this had been the other way round. There were lots of plots holes. Overall I enjoyed waiting to see what would happen, the set pieces were very well done as were the effects. I feel kylo ren and rey's character's were progressed well, if nobody else. I don't think it's the movie it could, and indeed, should have been considering it was Luke's finale, Han Solo is already dead and Carrie Fisher has sadly passed on. Just feel they deserved something better than this.… Expand

Whether it's how, by the end, the title makes no sense, or whether it's how, from the very beginning, the film has NO respect for anyone who liked The Force Awakens at face-value. None of the questions from The Force Awakens are answered, and the ones that are are dismissively waved away with an answer of, "it doesn't matter". The biggest flaw of The Last Jedi is that, by the end of the film, the three main leads STILL have not talked to one another. They're not fast friends as Han, Luke and Leia were. They are complete strangers. Finn and Rei have hugged more than they have talked at this point and it's beginning to be creepy. Finn and Poe's immediate bro-mance was cool in the first film. Now it makes no sense.

The Force Awakens is no an objectively terrible film because all the mysteries it set up are completely ignored and a waste of time. Why is Snoke so mysterious? Who are the Knights of Ren? Waste of time.… Expand

This movie is okay, not great or horrid, just simply okay. I loved the acting (especially Ridley and Driver as Rey and Ren). The action set pieces (namely the last one), CG, and practical effects were grand as per usual in Star Wars movies. Plus, it added some interesting insight into the jedi, sith, and the force through Luke's scenes. However, there are two major problems to talk about: plot conveniences (ex-machinas) and the fact the story was far too safe by the end of the film. There are far too many conveniences with regard to things like the force and BB-8 (after you've seen the film, you'll understand) that move the plot forward when they really should not and come off as lazy writing. It also happens to make these characters look invincible with no stakes or sense of danger. With regard to my second argument, after a certain event which I will not spoil, I thought the story and universe could shift drastically and truly create a unique Star Wars film unlike any before. In the end, though, it abandons that risk completely and takes the low hanging fruit instead. Long story short, I feel a better story could have arose from these concepts and the questions left unanswered or answered poorly in this film from TFA. Overall, I did enjoy my time watching this movie, but it was far from great. However, I am concerned about the future of the franchise and the overreaction by this fanbase.… Expand

I'm pretty disappointed with this movie. Some unnecessary scenes, especially Finn and Rose(new character) with their side stuff. They should have left that out. I'm giving this movie a 6 because I felt that the story involving Rey, Kylo, and Luke was well-played. It introduced new and exciting aspects of the force while showing limitations as well. With that said, I was extremely disappointed in the movie. It nullified every single question raised from The Force Awakens and created a universe with virtually no depth. Who is Snoke? It doesn't matter, he was wasted. Who are Rey's parents? It doesn't matter, they are nobody. The characters Poe and Finn were some fantastic characters created in TFA. Star Wars is a series that is known for having heroes that stand apart. Granted, not every decision will be a good one; however, when every single bad thing that happened is because the main characters subverted orders, it makes them completely unlikable. They were wasted and none of their pieces in the movie had any impact in the overall plot. Finally, I had a really hard time getting over what they did with Princess Leia. The random force floating through space is absolutely ridiculous. "That's not how the force works!" Interesting enough, there are some things that are in the "legends" books that could justify this; however, it was completely out of place. I felt it did a disservice to all fans knowing that somehow they have to reconcile her loss in the next film. Overall the entire Canto Bight piece of the film felt like a clip from Harry Potter meets The Fifth Element. Both fantastic movies on their own, but not Star Wars. It made it worse that this whole piece of the film was only to show how incompetent Finn and Poe are and had zero impact on the overall story of the movie. Maybe I expected too much to hope that Disney would actually have thought through the entire story from 7, 8, and 9. Instead, it just felt disjointed like the new director wanted to erase what JJ did in episode 7. I'm not saying that Mark Hamill was absolutely right and they should have stuck with George Lucas's vision (that would have been nice though), but they could have at least told a succinct story to satisfy all of the great questions raised from TFA. I waited for two years to find that it was useless to even discuss these topics. Final thoughts: The comedic relief was way overboard. The Porgs are only to sell toys, fine, whatever...

I REALLY liked the Ice Wolves. It made me think of this latest season of Rebels. I'm sad about what they did with General Hux because I actually liked his character in TFA. I am torn with the fight between Finn and Phasma. I think it came to soon to have Finn defeat her, I was hoping she would be better. I do like the callback to Rebels here when Finn hit her and it was just her eye. This reminded me of the Asohka/Vader battle.… Expand

It looks fantastic, both the opening and closing battle scenes are amongst the best in the series. But the rest of it just felt so-so and quite static, chiefly because most of the movie revolves around the slowest getaway since OJ - everyone on board HMS Exposition limping along and trying to do something interesting with their hair while Kylo and the First Order, with their galaxy bashing faster than light flying machines, can't seem to organise a simple road block.

Meanwhile, far far away on a rock in Kerry, Luke is in a proper snarky mood, Rey gets trippy, and Chewbacca..well...no idea, perhaps he's down the back of the Falcon reading those few books Luke hasn't been arsed to read in 30 years. Who knows.

There's some gubbins about an arms dealer: apparently, the First Order have more financial clout than the rebels which is why they have better weapons. I'm not sure I follow the logic here, did they buy the Starkiller base or outsource it? Perhaps episode IX is going to be about someone hacking Hux's email to reveal who's funding the First Order.

Hux. Like the worst Keystone Cops panto villain ever with his pasty face, rouged cheeks and minging eyebrows. Gleeson was pretty good in The Force Awakens, but here there's more ham on display than a Christmas window full of beglittered arses. Snokes is much more interesting this time around, while Kylo still has petulance issues and helmet hair. These bad guys are all utterly incompetent idiots, which makes it really hard to believe they could have so much power; I can see Kylo Ren sending out angry 'no-one-understands-me' 'fake-news' tweets at 3am while snacking down on KFC and Pepsi before he smothers himself in hairspray and poses for some Instagram selfies - the only thing he's conflicted about is which social platform has better filters and reach.

Finn is still the most interesting character in this new batch of films, but his whole input into this episode could be shelved and no one would miss it. There's a real easy going charm to the way he's played, but he's wasted on this occasion.

I'll all for tearing things down to build something new and fresh again and that's where this film wins its only real battle, by laying the groundwork for what's to come. Even though it's tied down to a just a few locations that really aren't that new or interesting there are still some great visuals, just nothing especially creative other than the salt covered planet Crait.

Rian Johnson not only wants to tear down and kick-start a completely new Star Wars, but he really doesn't seem to like anything that JJ Abrams brought to the table with The Force Awakens. It'll be interesting to see what Abrams does when directing the next episode.

The Last Jedi is too long, with a huge amount of yak, and the story is too thin and stretched too far. There's little that's spectacular about it
or particularly clever, and although it does have some good set pieces there's not enough to hit all the bullseyes I expect from this franchise.… Expand

I think TFA was a good movie – but it wasn't very original.

Rian Johnson did the only right thing but delivering a story that brings the franchise forward – and not by repeating it.

The movie improved in some areas, such as a more original story line, a very engaging space battle, and some cool new landscapes (and seeing more of the island was pretty neat). I did however have my tropes with this movie. Some scenes were just straight up stupid, that being luke milking that weird walrus cow... thing. I get that he's a hunter and a survivor now but that was just a little bit gross. It doesn't even compare to Leia's **** force scene. What? I'm supposed to believe Leia was thrown into the vacuum of space from a missile attack that decimated her room and she was just floating there like "durr but the force"?? Using the force is one thing but I'm pretty sure the force can't stop your eyes and brain from exploding from being exposed to the vacuum of space. Another problems I had with the movie was the pacing. We constantly get thrown back and forth in between this casino, but getting thrown back into the space battle. Or the scenes on the island with luke... but then getting thrown back into the space battle, which doesn't advance at all! Constantly resetting the tension can really take you out of the moment. I was practically begging for the space battle to end because of how much of a drag it was. Another major problem I had was the forced marketing. The porgs were so forced and so obviously a toy to sell for the movie. We get it, they're cute and fluffy and chewie is eating them, but they don't interact with the characters other than to show up on the screen and be cute. Take BB-8 for an example, he was a marketing ploy done right. He interacts with the plot, he interacts with the characters and he has personality.

The final problem I will talk about is probably my biggest problem with the movie... CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT! So we finally get to see Snoke, the high and mighty, wise but manipulative Snoke. And we get nothing out of him. Sure we get to see him in person, and in his badass red throne but we get no progression with him because he dies half way through the movie. Which inherently is not a bad thing but we may as well had seen him through the hologram the entire movie and we would have got the same result.

Princess Leia also might as well had been killed off during the space battle scene (No disrespect to Carrie Fisher by any means). Leia did literally nothing after the coma scene. Just thought I'd ramble for a while. I did actually like this movie overall but it could have been a million times better.… Expand

Hard to give a fair score. On its own, TLJ is an entertaining movie. As part of a franchise TLJ is a mess. It completely destroys the storylines of all the characters. Positives:
Presence of space Battles
Story twists
Lot of action

Negatives:
Simply the story and setting of the movie is not epic enough. First Order is decently strong yet it's not epic enough. Only an average bad guys. Kylo Ren is interesting but he is also only average. He is like Sith Stormtrooper.
Leia flying
Luke Skywalker being stupid.
Snoke being stupid.

Hire somebody from Bioware to help create a decent Star Wars movie please. They created Star wars Knights of The Old Republic video game and that's best star wars story.… Expand

Seen the movie at the opening on Wednesday... just to avoid spoilers. We can critize the second trilogy but Lucas tried to create different environements, worlds, visuals and the way the Empire rose made more sense than how this "First Order" became so powerful !! Apple fired Steve Jobs... look what happened when he came back... Disney should do the same with Lucas.… Expand

A lot of people have ripped this movie/Johnson to shreds and he deserves it, I just don't know how JJ can recover from this! Who the hell is in the first order any more? There's some theorys going around that Snoke isn't really dead and I almost believe them just from a numbers standpoint. Who else is there?! A beatable Kylo Ren...Hux is worthless and the stormtroopers who killed NO ONE in this movie. BB8 killed 5 of them by hijacking an Atst..it's liked watching Season 4 of Rebels (so far)! Just have the good guys win 99% of the battles! SCREW THAT. It's a WAR

Anyways, as routine as Force Awakens was..he set up Rian Johnson pretty well. You can see who the Knights of Ren are, why Kylo turned on Luke..do whatever the hell you want with Rey, Luke, Finn, Phasma, Leia, Snoke etc and then he does this?

There's been some conspiracy going around saying that bots hijacked rottentomatoes and gave Last Jedi a 53 (from the fans). Man, you're looking it the wrong way..how in the HELL did it get a 92% from the critics! Of course, IGN gave it a 97..but they might give the worst movie ever a 75! Have they reviewed Major League 3 yet?

Anyways, I loved Rogue One and I know Ron Howard won't screw up Solo and am glad Johnson has NOTHING to do with the Obi Wan movie!

Last Jedi = LAST PLACE. Attack of the Clone is 10 times the movie this was!

The last Jedi is good enough.
There is very little character development and fake deaths abundant. It is a borderline mess in its exposition and fails to move the story in any meaningful way. Visually impressive, And thematically pleasing. The Last Jedi hinders on being a truly great film.

Yes,it`s entertaining and can be watchable regardless your age (which i think the main focus of the movie was), Disney tried to sell the movie as a "darker star wars flick" but it wasn`t, not even close. It has tons of plot holes, almost all characters evolution from episode 7 was non existent (except a little of Rey). All the important or misterious aspects of the previous movies are literally thrown to the garbage in this one. All important characters felt flat and some of them i even knew were there, like Chewie, why !? lol. Well is good, but nohing more, for me is a 6 out of 10 , i still think Rouge One, Strikes Back & Return of the Jedi are better Star Wars movies by far !!! Even some Episode 7 moments are better than this one. Also.....Leia in space.....dead.......in -245 Cº coming back to the ship and then be well in 2 hours !?… Expand

There's nothing quite like the feeling of sitting in a dark cinema with that pause after "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..." when that glorious music starts and the title screen appears.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is like getting repeatedly hit in the face with nostalgia, but if you thought the Porgs were the biggest concern well think again. Picking up almost immediately from The Force Awakens. For the most part The Last Jedi feels strongly like a combination of Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. With a few twists and turns and a not so lovely section in the middle that felt like it came straight out of George Lucas's imagination. This is the 8th Star Wars movie now (no Rogue One you don't count) so they had to up the stakes and it won't let you down in that area. It's good, I liked it but I didn't love it. The Last Jedi feels like it's missing something, the wow factor. This new trilogy might have peaked at The Force Awakens, but if it helps The Last Jedi is better than all the prequels and Rogue One combined.

Every single actor is giving it their all and loving every minute of it. Carrie Fisher is magnificent and there is no way you would want to miss her final performance as Leia Organa. Domhnall Gleeson gave another chilling performance as General Hux. Adam Driver took his character to another level I didn't even think he had. Sure you have your general clichés and humour thrown into the script but that's to be expected. Amazingly for all the time that has passed in the life of Luke Skywalker he is the exact same as he was when we last saw him onscreen. Any apparent character development is non-existent. He's still the same whiny annoyance he was in the original Star Wars trilogy, the only thing that's changed is his age. The beginning and the end is the best thing about The Last Jedi, but I could have done without all that stuff in the middle about finding your true self with scenes reminiscent of the Never Ending Story. It kills the story dead and upset the pace set in the opening scenes. Maybe if it had lost 20 minutes and made the scenes with Luke just a little more interesting I might have loved it, or at least put it on the same level as The Force Awakens.

It answers the questions asked in The Force Awakens. The visual effects and the ultra creative lightsaber fights will make your inner fanboy go crazy. It's a Star Wars movie you can enjoy so what more can we expect? Nothing will ever top Empire Strikes Back so we just have to take what we can get and although The Last Jedi isn't a masterpiece it's entertaining and enjoyable. Recommended, but if you're already a Star Wars fan you don't need any recommendation, you've already seen it.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It really bothers me that Rian Johnson did to TFA what Luke did to the lightsaber in the beginning: Looked at it and threw it away. I loved TFA and I was excited for the future installments, but upon seeing TLJ twice I really don't think it is as good as it could've been had it built upon TFA. Here are a couple of examples: 1) Rey's parents were built up as this big mystery in TFA, even through-out the first half of this film and they are revealed to be nobody in particular, just some junkheads from Jakku. Excuse me, what? 2) Same with Snoke, who is this mystery villain? He's just randomly killed off by Kylo Ren. Excuse me, what? 3) The ending of TFA was a big cliffhanger, with Rey handing Luke his lightsaber. What happens in TLJ? Luke looks at it and throws it away. Excuse me, WHAT? 4) Rey and Finn build this relationship with each other but in TLJ this is movie they barely share any screentime. 5) I guess Rian Johnson didn't like Kylo Ren's helmet... meh.
Other negative points for me: 1) The middle of the movie is BORING. We cut between Canto Bight and Acht-Tu and nothing really happens. 2) I don't like this version of Luke. It doesn't feel like him at all. Even Mark Hamill said it. 3) While I did enjoy some of the gags, a lot of them felt out of place. Like, they interrupted good action sequences or felt awkwardly placed. What's with Luke milking that space cow? Did we really have to see that? 4) There isn't a single lightsaber duel. We are teased with it but it doesn't happen. 5) Rose? Get out of here...

All in all, I think it boils down to Rian Johnson wanting to subvert expectations: "Ho ho, they'll think this is the big lightsaber duel of the movie, but nooooo", "After all the theorizing they'll never guess Rey's parents were nobody", etc, etc. It's too much and doesn't respect the predecessor. There are a couple of positives: BB-8 - I love this droid so much. I love the final battle and the Throne Room fight, and how about the hyperspeed crash? Wow! Adam Driver and Daisy Ridley are awesome. I didn't like Kylo Ren that much in TFA but I thought this movie put him in a new light and I'm excited to see where his character goes from here. Some of the cinematography is breathtaking - this is probably the most beautiful looking Star Wars movie ever. I did like the Porgs, I thought they were very cute. I did get the feeling through-out the movie I didn't know who was gonna survive and that's a rare accomplishment! It did a good job building fear and uncertainty. Here's to hoping JJ can get Part IX and Star Wars back on track. I wonder if he's pissed that so much of his setups and work in VII were completely obliterated in VIII?… Expand

The Last Jedi was enjoyable on the surface, but like the previous episode it is full of huge plot coincidences, emotional misdirects, and masking humor. More fans are noticing this time and not giving it a pass. Disney has changed the philosophy of Star Wars which used to embrace a deep history and they are changing where the good guys and the bad guys want nothing to do with the past; they burn it down, run from it and diminish the old to prop up the new characters. The past is inconvenient to the movies because they do not know how to connect it to the present, and the movie does not want to bother with the past. And they want so badly to create their own Darth Vader, and give birth to the most powerful Jedi ever, they will pull everything down to force it to work. Star Wars fans want the history to be respected, understood, with some consistency of power and limits. The biggest complaint about the Last Jedi is many scenes and actions are reversed immediately; they constantly make someone die then not, or the hate someone then not, or turn dark then not. The movie is trying to be super tricky, as if to leave the door open for any possibility for any character. Therefore everyone is bipolar, except for Snoke he just was evil but wasted quickly. There should be no redemption for Kylo, but they probably will. Rey shows a lot of violent anger, and is open to the dark, but no she will be some super powerful grey jedi. I did enjoy Kylo and Rey fighting together but that also was reversed. Although I sort of enjoyed parts of the Last Jedi, the story leaves us with little; a small rebel group, like one First Order ship, and a war of no consequence. Luke was found after the whole first movie, but little pay off to the story. I am still hoping for some pay-off to show that the story was CRAFTED for more than a scene by scene basis, but it will be tough to write out of the corner they painted themselves into. I bet the next movie will take place years in the future, they will write out Leia, and that kid with the ring at the end will lead a new rebellion.… Expand

I thought this was a good sci-fi fantasy movie, but made for a mediocre Star Wars movie, and it has left me wondering if I even want to remain invested in this new trilogy.

From a regular film standpoint, TLJ should be movie gold: excellent visuals, great casting, and exciting action sequences. But as a Star Wars film, it leaves you with very little to look forward to in Episode 9, offering some extremely disappointing answers to questions raised in last movie, while seemingly also throwing much of what is considered sacred among Star Wars fans out the window.

It should be noted that my only real criticism of TFA was that it didn't offer anything new. TLJ is the exact opposite of that, taking many (perhaps too many) new risks with the story. Unfortunately, few of said risks panned out well in the end. Most notably, the way Rian Johnson treated the character of Luke Skywalker has left an extremely sour taste in my mouth.… Expand

Like Holy HELL , Luke who wouldn`t kill his father would actualy think of killing Ben like wat were the screenwriters smoking.

I love that Johnson tired to be different and some of it really works now that I have seen it a second time, while other parts still fall very flat. I love some of the moments in the movie, especially Luke’s noble end and the strong work done with the Rey/Ben/Luke story but Abrams has his work cut out for him with Episode IX. I never thought I’d say this, but J.J. Abrams, you’re our only hope. The Last Jedi is rated 3 out of 5 stars.… Expand

I liked: Yoda!, the Kylo/Rey duo fight scene, the sunset scene and the awesome soundtrack.

I disliked: almost everything else, poor dialogue, convoluted story with unnecessary subplots, god-awful "dad humor".

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is not a masterpiece. It's also not "destroying the franchise". The binary masses will not be swayed by this review either way, so I will not bother catering to them.

In my opinion there are a handful of breathtakingly fresh moments that scream the spectacle that Star Wars deserves. There is also a handful of goofy (I'm looking at you Leia), and unnecessary (I'm pretty sure the movie just cuts to an in-production James Bond movie half-way through) that serve little to no purpose in this story. Finn did not need to be in this story. That's basically a fact at this point. The movie was grasping trying to find something for him to do and the writers were too scared of simply not having Finn in this movie at all. That is what I feel is the weakest part of this film. It tries to appease everyone and loses focus as a result.

That being said, I think Po and Rey/Kylo's stories were great, and the high points of this movie were definitely worth the watch. Save Finn for his own movie and you got something special on your hands, but as it stands I would liken it to about Revenge of the Sith levels.… Expand

The whole "casino planet" scene should have been cut It just didn't bring anything to the story. Ask yourself: if the scene wasn't in the movie, will it change the story ? The answer is no. I think that scene was made only to plug Benicio del Toro character in the movie because the studio said: - Guys, we have Benicio del Toro for the next Star Wars movie you have to find a way to put him in the movie.
- But he's irrelevant to the plot.
- Don't care ! We have Benicio del effing Toro for Star Wars find a way !
So they create the whole casino mission for that purpose... at least, that's how it felt since this whole part of the movie is completely meaningless. Then there's Rose... wow. She just need to go for the next movie, like kill or severely injured her in a battle after the opening credits so she won't be able to intervene in anyway, whatsoever, in the story. Just felt like they forced the character on the public and it didn't connect. Ok, now there's those little hamster-owl thingies... obviously a cash grab for movie merchandise. Again, they didn't bring ANYTHING to the movie, the only serve as a marketing tool for their plush toys. I see you coming: but they were Ewoks, rancor monster or wampas in other Star Wars movies, but they served a purpose to the story: Ewoks played a key role in the battle of Endor, the rancor led to the Sarlacc pit battle where the gang is reunited and Luke use his force power for the first time in the wampa cave and encountered Obi-Wan ghost outside.
I won't give a failing mark for the Last Jedi it's still an ok movie. Remove Rose and the Casino planet subplot and I'll give it a 8 easily. Rey and Kylo teaming up against Snoke Preatorian guards is awesome, Luke's final battle, the questioning around the role of Jedi and the debate surrounding them etc. Excellent musical score, like always and great visual effects to support the Star Wars universe. I have a question though: what the hell happened to the Y-Wing bombers ? I think they would have made a better job than the extremely slow and shieldless bombers (whose gunners are quite incompetent from what I saw) from that movie don't you think ? Anyway, the Last Jedi is far from being a great Star Wars movie. Let's hope Disney learned from those mistakes for Episode IX, because the Star Wars universe deserve way better and has a lot more potential than that.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have been a big fan of the star wars movies since early 1980's loved 4,5,6 - odd flicks of humour,awesome villains,loveable heros and great story lines - for me all the same applied with episode 1,2 and 3.
Then out comes the force awakens didn't fill me with excitement but it was obvious star wars was turning a corner and heading in a slightly different direction - I was watching,listening and hoping.....
Now after watching the last Jedi, I can say the film did have it's good moments but did looked slightly rushed and was made by someone who a) Just didn't 'get' star wars or b) was under orders to eliminate certain characters from movie series from a higher (disney) power to make way for new (disney made) characters....What happened to Luke Skywalker is nothing short of a disgrace! Also I don't remember Star Wars having such a weak set of villians - Kylo Ren - fair enough could have potential but NEVER as a leader -General Hux...? very weak when compared to previous like Tarkin and the 'comedy moment' between him and Kylo Ren were cringy... and I realise sometimes change is needed with characters but old characters have made Star Wars what it is today so they must have done something right...where are the bad-ass bounty hunters? where are the sith lords? Get George Lucas involved to sort it out!
I just don't see where they are trying to take Star wars after watching TLJ,but to turn it around for me they will have to surprise us with some epic characters and story lines in any future episodes....… Expand

First the positive. It is well shot and the CGI is pretty good. It's not like Justice League that's for damn sure. Luke returns so euh that's good. The space battles are fine. Kylo Ren is cool euh kinda. Carrie Fisher is really good in this movie from an acting standpoint.

Now the negatives. This movie is so long and so boring in parts. I can forgive boring parts in a movie but when i want to cut more than an hour of scenes out of a Star Wars movie then you didn't do it right. It's like the first half of Rogue one but just longer. The story isn't good. Like really jeezes. I had so much moments where I was thinking wait that's not how the force works. They moved it in these weird ways that don't really make any sense in my mind. The new characters aren't that interesting. Laura Dern her character is fine but that's about it. The whole Finn storyline should have been cut out of the movie. It's funny but when you cut it out the movie doesn't change. Thats how useless it was. Captain Phasma is again not used. The whole training Rey with Luke thing takes so long to get going. I now he's had it rough but come on. Luke really doesn't do anything in this movie besides whining. He does one thing at the end. Yippie? There is to much humor in this movie. They try to do these dark themes but then ruin it with humor that doesn't really work most of the time. Snoke is useless. If you wanted to learn something about Snoke don't bother. The reveal of Rey's parent's is really weird and stupid. Don't bother just look it up. The movie itself is fine but i'll probably never watch it again for years. It's cool to see on the big screen but i kinda felt that i wasted my money. Sad life… Expand

The Last Jedi has many good sequences and a few new good ideas but overall it is extremely inconsistent and does very little to build on any of its predecessors. It almost seems as though this movie wants the audience to just forget that the other episodes in the series happened. It offers no meaningful answers to the questions that were posed by the Force Awakens and most of the characters don't show much development. Even Luke's reasons for hiding on the island seem to contradict everything he learned in the original trilogy. The plot is full of scenarios that seem completely contrived rather than being logically justifiable. The pacing is also very jarring. Some sequences felt stretched way too long while other ones were rushed through so quickly that they seemed to condense what would have probably taken weeks into the span of a few hours. The movie also has the most ridiculously overpowered droids to date. Why the hell does anyone use human solders when droids like BB8 can take down entire squadrons? Moments like that just killed the sense of danger entirely. There are some serious dramatic moments but they were often followed by unbelievable scenes that negated their impact. The movie does have great moments and scenes though, the scene in Snoke's throne room was very good in a lot of ways but the way it ended didn't really explain anything about any of the characters. The reveal about Rey's parents wasn't just meaningless to the audience it also did nothing to explain Rey's own behavior. It felt like a mystery created for no reason besides generating fake drama and getting viewers to wonder about it. Luke's use of the Force near the end was great but once again how it ultimately ended just killed my interest in whatever happens next. Overall I was very torn on the movie, as a stand alone experience I think it is worth watching and above average but as a Star Wars movie that is supposed to develop and build upon what the previous movies did I think it fails miserably. I have seen a lot of advertising stating that the movie is full of surprises, that is true, but most of those surprises just come out of left field without any apparent depth behind them. It succeeds in being different and surprising but without really justifying itself within the established structure of the series. I really don't get the impression that Disney has a cohesive plan for the Star Wars series, it feels like they are just making it up as they go along and haven't taken the time or effort to create any sort of series bible the gives the world and story rules. This movie raises a ton of questions in terms of what can and cannot be done with the Force but I really doubt they have given much thought to it themselves. The way they use the Force seems very convenient rather than believable based on what we have learned about it over the course of the series. Some characters are able to do amazing things with the Force one moment but that makes you wonder why the hell something like that has never been done before. When Luke and Snoke use the force in new ways I can get on board with it because they are clearly powerful and have probably gained knowledge that the vast majority of Force users have not through decades of training and experience. There are other instances though such as Leia flying herself through space that seem to come out of left field and made me wonder why the hell she has never used the Force in a really noticeable way before. The scene with Force ghost Yoda also raises a lot of questions about how much Force ghosts can actually interact with the real world. One of my complaints about the movie is that while it is different it doesn't really do anything to evolve upon the questions of the last few movies. For example, we don't learn anything meaningful about the First Order, we don't learn anything meaningful about what happened to society after the fall of the Empire, we don't learn anything meaningful about Snoke, where he came from, how he seized control of the First Order, or how he was able to influence Kylo Ren from afar. Snoke has done things that even the Emperor could not but we still have no explanation for why. We don't learn anything meaningful about Rey's past, we learn that her parents were apparently just randoms which has no meaningful impact on the story. In terms of why she is so powerful with the Force or what her vision was about. The movie does offer some interesting new ideas. The Force connection between Rey and Kylo was an interesting development which has a lot of story potential. It added some complexity to how the Force can be used. Luke's astral projecting with the Force was also a very interesting idea and it was used to good dramatic affect within the movie. Snoke's use of the Force was cool and felt reasonable for a Force user who is supposed to be in a class above the rest. How those ideas develop in the next movie will be the true test of their substance though.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I like the code master plot more than a lot of people, I love Rey's origin but maybe not how it was showed. I don't mind snoke's background and general's space drifting, I like how luke and Ben's relationship was like.

I feel as individual points, I enjoyed those more than people loved this movie.

I can't get over the ridiculous space chasing and unearned resolution, which is most of this movie. The tension should not be existing. No matter how awesome the light speed suicide run looks (it is one of the greatest thing I ever see and I can't deny it was a fantasy in my head). It breaks my immersion of all the space battles in star wars.… Expand

Why is it literally impossible now to please a Star Wars fan? Yes, the movie has plot holes, yes it makes you suspend your disbelief too many times, I myself can even say I had some issues with it as I walked out of the theater and myWhy is it literally impossible now to please a Star Wars fan? Yes, the movie has plot holes, yes it makes you suspend your disbelief too many times, I myself can even say I had some issues with it as I walked out of the theater and my nitpicks kept going on the next day. But overall, I was more than satisfied with what I got: a thrilling Star Wars movie that never has a dull moment.

In the group of friends I went to see this with, one of them had only seen a few Star Wars movies fully in her life, but her favorite character of the saga is Jar Jar Binks. Freaking Jar Jar! But she absolutely enjoyed The Last Jedi. That’s right: a non-fan thought the movie being mercilessly attacked by its most committed followers was great. If you ask me, I say that’s proof enough that Star Wars: The Last Jedi succeeds all it intended to accomplish.

First off, the bad. The amount of humor put in throughout the movie is way too excessive. The Force Awakens, pulled off some phenomenal humor but still knew when to be serious. This time around, the jokes are constant, even hurting the most touching moments with a quick snarky one-liner. It certainly succeeded in making me laugh quite a lot, but the already emotionally powerful story could have been so much greater without the Porgs.

With the characters themselves, their arcs are not as fully realized as they could have been. Finn’s arc could have been so effective here like how it was in The Force Awakens, but instead he’s pretty much just there to exist and move the plot along. He shares a weak romantic subplot with a new character, a young, eager member of the Resistance named Rose, who’s just there really to deliver the message in the end.

Then there are the other old flaws of the entire Star Wars franchise, such as expositiony dialogue, but newer flaws are unique to just this movie. One scene features a new world that looks like a steampunk Great Gatsby with a casino setting that feels very out of place for Star Wars, it’s literally another Cantina scene. So basically, I understand the hate from old fans: it’s difference in style alters what’s already established. But different is good! With everything this movie does wrong, there’s just as much, possibly more, that it does right!

First of all, the look to the film is gritty yet stellar. The casino looks lavish with spice while the space battles above the civil life bombards with grand explosions. The world of Ahch-To is absolutely gorgeous with its design of the strange life that lives there. It always seems to rain there, even when it isn’t, which complements the condition of Luke’s damp relationship with the force. A new planet with a crystalline design holds the base for the final battle, and it’s a visual splendor to watch as the ships glide over a vast salt bed over red dust. Beneath the surface of this planet, a space battle takes itself down under through a crimson geode. Even in the throne room of Supreme Leader Snoke, pure red overpowers the screen.

The much more intimate moments had so many moments when I held my breath in shock and anticipation, questioning what will happen. What helps is not just the question as to who Rey’s parents are or stuff like that, but the kinesthetic relationships with some of the more prevalent characters. While some of the character relationships needed work, others, such as the force sensitive bond between Rey and Kylo Ren, were mesmerizing to watch. You even get to see a bit more of Finn’s arc with Captain Phasma fulfilled in one awesome piece of combat! There are plenty of other lightsaber duels and battle sequences that are filled with fun moments and epic choreography.

I particularly like how Kylo Ren is far more complex than the typical bad guy, and you can see past his emo hair to empathize with the corrupted, scared little child he truly is. Rey’s little training sessions, as few as they are, also command your attention as Luke observes what she already knows, and how he in turn learns from her, a classic mentorship bond.

So guys, stop setting such unrealistically high expectations for Star Wars. All the flaws about this movie, as viable as they are, are not new to the entire Star Wars series. With all the fan theories and expanded universe that try to add ownership to the fictional world, we forgot one thing about this property we’ve now gotten so serious about: watching Star Wars is supposed to be fun! That’s what I did with my friends on Thursday night, we went to have a good time and we got it. I’m not usually one to tolerate talking during a movie, but I was sharing little verbal exchanges with my friend I was sitting next to while watching the movie, and we all cheered and laughed with the rest of the crowd. Not in a "this movie was over-hyped way", but more of a "they finally figured it out" way. I was definitely disappointed. The Last Jedi was still a fine movie. Acting, visual, musical score, character chemistry, and more comedy than usual that actually fit in fine with the film. My disappointment comes with the plot. There were quite a few plot holes and questionable writing decisions that just made no sense to me. Why keep Poe in the dark about the master escape plan? Then maybe he never sends Finn and Rose off the ship where they get double crossed anyway. The whole Casino part of the movie felt very out of place in the Star Wars universe. I understand the point they were trying to make with it. Those who profit from war have no side, it's about the money that fueling the destruction brings in. But it still just felt very forced and out of place.

The relationship between Luke and Rey was very reminiscent of Empires Strikes Back in my opinion. A lot of the reviews I read made it seem like this was all original stuff that didn't hearken back to its predecessors. I, now, feel like that was a false statement. Kylo's growth and development was great. It was a shame they built up Snoke so much only to see him cut down and we'll have to wait for expanded universe content to really know about the character. I get that it was probably about not wanting to create another "emperor" show down in the final movie, but it still felt lacking. I felt that the ending plot device was fantastic. Crait really showed the desperation that the Resistance is facing. I mean, the entire Resistance is now aboard the Millennium Falcon. There's no easy way for the Resistance to come back from what is surely a horrible defeat. And they basically have to build back from nothing a la Star Wars: Rebels. But all the ways we got to that final plot device was just disappointing. I definitely plan on seeing it again and trying to look at it from a different angle.

I saw A New Hope in theaters when I was 5. I played with action figures until I was 13. This is not the Star Wars I know and loved. That said, It's ridiculous to give this film less than a 5. It has to make sense! Decisions need to be earned or explained. Say what you want about the prequels, they had a lot of problems, but the overall story made sense. The Last Jedi's main plot is the worst Star Wars story ever told. It wouldn't even make a bad Clone Wars episode. At least 30 minutes of this movie is dedicated to a weird, useless subplot. In a 2h30min, this time would've been better invested in making characters richer and deeper and taking the time to investigate their motivations.

Adam Driver's Kylo Ren is the only redeeming factor in this movie and the only main character who's motivations make sense.

All and all, this isn't a terrible movie. It's a fun movie with bad lazy writing. Star Wars deserves better.… Expand

There are things that happen in this film that were completely unexpected that will work for some but be loathed by others. The film did have some memorable fight scenes and the acting as a whole was just as good as it was in The force awakens. The return of Mark Hamill was a great addition even though there were a few scenes that seemed off for his characters tone. Personally the biggest let down for me was that Rian Johnson seemed to completely disregard a lot of setup of J.J. Abraham’s film and just make his own movie. There was clearly a clash between the two director’s narratives and I think it ultimately hurt the film. In the end it was an enjoyable enough film for me, as I am a fan of the genre. It just didn’t meet the qualities of my anticipation, after waiting 2 long years for this film. I am still looking forward to see the conclusion to episode 9 as I still love the new characters and would like to see how their story ends.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last Jedi is a rare beast, the kind that excels spectacularly while also being crushingly disappointing. I give credit to the director, Rian Johnson for breaking the decade old Star Wars formula and bringing something fresh and new to the table. However, it's only when you try something new that you hilariously fail. First and foremost, this movie is NOT a failure. However, some choices made in this film are puzzling to say the last. Primarily, the introduction of a new side character, Rose, and a side plot so boring and drab I can't even recall with planet it takes place on (let's refer to it as the casino planet).Rose is one of the most annoying characters I've seen on the silver screen in years, someone who's only purpose seems to be to annoy the audience constantly. Her actions are nonsensical and bog the plot down. Her character can be summed up with her forced kiss with Finn near the end of the story, as well as stopping him from saving the rebellion because "we win this war by saving what we love, not by fighting what we hate". Her accompanying storyline in the Casino planet is a waste of time and honestly feels like it's going nowhere. Moving on, while I do not have a problem with the deaths of Luke and Snoke, I do have a problem with their characterization. Snoke's death is certainly ballsy, however the lack of a backstory and who he was doesn't give the audience any reason to really care. For us, he was a CGI alien that shot lightning out of his fingertips. Finally, the death of Luke Skywalker has been something that has caused controversy for all fans. While I do not have a problem with his death and think his entire ending sequence was done very tastefully, I do not see a reason for him to die. He very well could have stayed alive, and while that would have changed the outcome of the film, it would have allowed for him to become more of a mentor to the next generation of force users as hinted by the end of the film. His death only allows for him to become more of a Yoda figure, something that I fear will cause Episode IX to become eerily similar to Episode VI. Of course, on top of this are an abundance of plot errors (they're not plot holes, but they don't make any sense as to why it happened). More significantly, why Holdo did not notify anybody about her plan regarding the transport pods. On the positive side of things, this film is incredibly well acted, and some of the design choices are truly stunning, especially the fight in Snokes palace where the fire overtakes the room, lighting up the theater, as well as the hyperdrive kamikaze scene, which was truly a jaw dropping moment. It's very well acted, and I'll be honest, the scenes with Luke, Kylo and Rey are so absorbing and interesting that I never wanted it to end. However, anything else immediately dropped my intention and I found it hard to care for anyone that wasn't Kylo, Rey, Luke and maybe Finn. Is it a 0/10? No! a 0/10 would have to be truly an unwatchable piece of garbage which this film most certainly not. Presuming that a 5/10 is average, I'd consider this film to be slightly above average. It could certainly have been tighter, the runtime didn't help. Overall, I'd recommend this movie to anyone.… Expand

The Last Jedi was a fun movie. It had everything you'd want to see in a blockbuster: goal-driven characters, a great musical score, and explosive action. And yes, BB-9e and the Porgs were clearly made for merchandise, but so were the Ewoks so it's not like Lucasfilm hasn't milked the cash cow before. But I left the theater discontent. Here's why:

The Last Jedi did not add much depth to the Force Awakens. In the end of TFA, there's a real gray area in Kylo's future. I got the feeling there was still light in young Ben. By the end of TLJ, it's completely snuffed out. He's not a complex character anymore. He's just a very one-dimensional baddie. Even his mom knows he's a goner. There's a real problem with this conclusion, however. The whole movie hints at hope in Kylo. Rey senses it. After Luke was honest with Rey, the audience can tell that there's a misunderstanding between master and apprentice. An internal conflict still exists within him. That is, until his betrayal to Snoke. Then, Kylo transforms into the blandest character ever. Quite comparable to Steppenwolf from the DCEU's failed team-up movie. I wanted so badly to invest in the villain, but I couldn't after Luke's lightsaber was torn apart.

And then there's Snoke. I understand maybe Rian Johnson didn't think he was very important to the plot, but his quick exit was a bad idea. There was so much potential with his character, but nope. All wasted. It just sucks to wait a whole year for the build up just to see him go so soon. I do admit, the way he died was pretty cool, but at least give him a backstory. Star Wars fans go crazy after that. And after the countless Snoke theories that accumulated over the past couple years, I can't imagine how the writers of this film got together and said, "Do you know what would be cool? If Snoke just died without a backstory. I'm sure fans would eat that **** up." Well guess what, we didn't.

So Mark Hamill didn't like Johnson's direction on Luke Skywalker. I HATED WHAT JOHNSON DID TO LUKE. First of all, his disbelief that Ben Solo couldn't be saved from the dark side? Darth Vader admitted himself that Luke was the one who turned him good again. So why couldn't he have talked with his nephew and had a flat out family discussion with him. Yeah, he may have been impulsive in the original trilogy, but you'd think Luke would have learned by now what his being like 60 years old and all. Second, Luke as a hermit... doesn't really fit his character. The prequel trilogy lay the grounds for why Yoda could make a good hermit. He's hella wise. Luke, on the other hand, has always been a fighter. He did not of that in this film. And if you say I'm wrong because of the scene with Kylo, he just dodged Kylo's lightsaber a couple times. And then he dies, no wait. That's just hologram Luke. No wait. He's dead. GG Luke, you thought too hard you had a brain aneurysm. If you thought Snoke's potential was wasted, Luke had like 10x the potential, and it was also wasted. TLJ did nothing to further the elements of TFA. There was nothing riveting in the story, nothing new that we didn't already know, just a jumbled up mess. There were things I enjoyed. I liked Rose. I thought she was a great character who really stood by her morals. I gotta say, I'm Asian American and I did appreciate the fact that Star Wars has become more and more diversified. If any fans complain against diversity in Star Wars they are just racist. So, good on Lucasfilm and Disney for that I guess. And great job by Kelly Marie Tran. Benicio del Toro is in this film, which is a plus...

If this was a standalone film, I might have given it a higher score. But this is Star Wars. And it did not feel like a Star Wars film.

Captain Phasma was also wasted. You know what, Johnson took like the three most visually compelling characters in this film and killed them off... I'm actually pissed thinking about it right now. Good luck JJ Abrams. You're going to need it.… Expand

This movie manages to stand a bit more on its own than The Force Awakens or Rogue One, but it still riffs pretty heavily on the old trilogy's story beats, and is a mixed bag in terms of characters, story choices, and tone. That last part might be the biggest problem. It pulls a Marvel at times and undercuts serious or important moments with ill-timed humor. The movie does little to develop Finn despite plenty of screen time, and Captain Phasma and Snoke are as lame as ever. Good riddance to both. Kylo Ren is still a compelling villain, and his and Rey's story is the highlight. I think Johnson missed the mark on the character of Luke pretty significantly, making him inconsistent with who he became after ROTJ, and forcing him to arbitrarily backpedal as a character, just to bring him back toward heroism in the end so the movie can pretend he has a story arc. The Last Jedi is less slavish in its callbacks to previous movies than The Force Awakens was, but what this lays bare is that the new stuff has comparatively little to offer, from the world building to the young male leads, to the incredibly corny new character Rose, to the action (awesome throne room fight aside). The movie's latter sections get slightly more interesting than its borderline-boring first half, but I had hoped to be much more impressed by Rian Johnson's take on the Star Wars galaxy than this.… Expand

The writing is curiously unpredictable: with the usual Hollywood trash you know exactly what is going to happen, but this is unfamiliar trash (it reminds me of some Netflix stuff). So a point or so for that.

I actually like Rey and Kylo Ren, but everything else is bad.

And the rebellion is too England accent heavy.

I wonder what Star Wars episode 50 will be like... Disney paid $4 billion for Star Wars... Star Wars will be going forever like Batman, etc. lol

At the same time I would rather have more Star Wars than have it die with Lucas at the first 6. Maybe they'll get better at this eventually and we'll have a few gems a la 'The Dark Knight'.… Expand

I am not a big fan of the Star Wars (SW) movies.

That’s not to say I don’t find the original SW trilogy fun, but it’s mostly from a visual effects and action standpoint. However, from a storytelling and character perspective; SW was alwaysI am not a big fan of the Star Wars (SW) movies.

That’s not to say I don’t find the original SW trilogy fun, but it’s mostly from a visual effects and action standpoint. However, from a storytelling and character perspective; SW was always lacking for me.

These same issues carried over to the J.J. Abrams-directed soft reboot The Force Awakens where despite grade-A action and visuals effects; suffered from an overly-formulaic plot that felt more like a glorified teaser for future movies than a real story. That and the Mary Sue protagonist, a disappointing villain in the form of Kylo Ren, and ANOTHER rehash of the Death Star plot.

I felt very divided as I was watching LJ. Rarely have I watched a movie where moments of sheer awesomeness are intermixed with moments that made me want to smack the upside of my head!

LJ carries over the tradition of the last two SW entries by being some of the most gorgeously executed special effects extravaganzas of the modern age. I also really liked the sequences in which Rey is exploring the Force as well as her own emotional insecurities stemming from her uncertainty to her place in the universe.

I also liked how Johnson gives these sequences a slightly surreal and psychological portrayal, much like how it was in the original trilogy.

There were also admittedly plenty of laugh-out-loud moments throughout too, in fact, it maybe the funniest SW movie to date.

From a filmmaking and cinematography standpoint, SW has really never looked better!

It’s when we get into discussions about the actual plot and story that LJ causes major disturbances. Johnson is credited as the sole writer and I give him plenty of credit with being bold enough try new things with the Star Wars formula. Johnson is hardly a “safe” filmmaker like J.J. Abrams.

The storyline involving Rey, Luke, and Ren is by far the most interesting stuff.

Luke’s character is taken in a very unexpected direction and Mark Hamill is more than capable of pulling off a more weary, vulnerable, and morally-greyed version of the iconic space hero. Rey still remains over-powered but she did feel less like a Mary Sue this time around due to the focus on her emotional insecurities. That and the fascinating new layer given to the dynamic between Rey and Ren.

Speaking of Ren, I’ve always liked Adam Driver and it was nice to see him being given better material to work with this time around. If Johnson succeeded at anything, it was turning Ren from a overgrown pathetic whiny brat to the complicated lost soul that FA attempted to portray him as but failed. If anything Ren is by far the best character now because he is the only one that goes through any real arc in LJ outside of Luke.

Because outside of the Rey, Luke and Ren storyline; everything else about the plot is an under explained and baffling mess with so-many questionable creative choices.

Like with Alien Covenant, if you are hoping for any answers to the questions posed by FA, then you are going to be severely disappointed.

Instead of being given more backstory that would help contextualize the drama and make us more invested in the plot; signifiant time is wasted following Finn (Boyega) and Rose Tico (Tran) on a planet straight from The Fifth Element in search of a codebreaker that I swear was ENTIRELY POINTLESS!!!

Who is Rose Tico?

Probably the most blatant example of adding an unnecessary character to a movie in a predictable attempt to appeal to Asian markets since Angelababy from Independence Day: Resurgence. It also doesn’t help that Tran is given some of the worst dialogue in the movie.

The First Order also continues it’s tradition of being the most incompetent evil oppressive empire since…well…the Empire. The Resistance also showcases baffling levels of incompetence. While I really enjoy Poe as a character due to Isaac’s effortlessly charismatic portrayal, his continuous unruly attitude and disregard for chain of command severely makes you question the quality of Leia’s judgement.

Laura Dern also randomly shows up in the movie as a supposed “legendary” Resistance leader although with that stupid purple wig she looks more like a hipster college professor if anything. I love Dern but she was simply wasted in this despite having one admittedly awesome scene, a literal non-character.

It’s not like I didn’t have some fun watching LJ, heck I think it is a slight step above FA, but I simply can’t ignore the questionable script on display. I personally can’t understand how anybody, critics or otherwise, can watch this and FA and tell me with a straight face they are examples of quality writing.

It’s far from the worst Star Wars movie, that honor goes to Attack of the Clones and it’s “worse than Twilight” chemistry-free love story between Anakin Skywalker and Padme, but it’s certainly not one of the best.… Expand

Watched it just now in BFI Imax. This is a very good film. The best point about it is that it's been made like a proper film. It is hard going over this film without spoilers. Yes, a few decision they took in the film and some scenes could have been done better. Overall, it is an interesting novel trajectory. I like Laura Dern and Benicio in this film. Finally, great underappreciated actors getting some action.

This is a solid 6/10 film, not without its flaws but with a few interesting surprises. It has good atmosphere and flow. Step in the right direction.… Expand

I'm very torn about how I feel about this movie. I could not disagree more. As a person who had nothing against the Force Awakens' oft-maligned themes of diversity, I found Rian Johnson's addition to the Star Wars universe a convoluted mess. Outside the story-line revolving around Luke, Rey, and Kylo Ren, the movie was incredibly underwhelming, obviously plagued by disjointed and uneven writing. There are some strong moments in The Last Jedi, but overall, the movie is a very sloppy sequel as well as a fairly mediocre standalone movie. Claiming that you are going "postmodern" on the franchise is hardly an excuse for average execution, and no grandstanding by critics from their ivory towers will change the fact that Johnson's movie is one of the weaker additions to the Star Wars franchise.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm ok with Luke gone. Let's be fair, it has to happen at some point for the new stories to begin. The problem is the movie has many flaws. The main story really is not well built especially at the end. You want Luke to pass on the Jedi spirit to Rey? OK! Fine. They need to be the main characters that click at the end. But obviously this is not the case. Luke swings his sword for 30 seconds and Rey lifts rocks for 10 seconds and that's it. It is nice to have supporting characters but they can't mess up the major story line. Also, the story line of Fin and Rose doesn't really make much sense and it is totally unnecessary, especially for the part where they went to look for the code guy.… Expand
