This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Star Wars The Last Jedi has a lot of wasted potential when it comes to the questions it answers that fans have had for years and it dosent help that the character Admiral Holdo ends up starting so many subplots like cantobite and Poes leadership which takes away from the entertaining Luke,Rey and Kylo Ren Dynamic which is the best part of the film, overall it is disappointing but you can have fun with it if your not a Star Wars fan and just want to see epic space battles Expand

It felt more like an episode in a 20 episode TV-series. The reason why is because it did not take the story forward in any important way. And a lot of the things that happened in the movie felt unnecessary and there for temporary entertainment instead of making a good narrative and getting you attached to the characters.

This movie might be enjoyable for those who just want to see some good action and nice environment. But those who are interested in seeing this movie as a part of a trilogy with great narrative and character progression will be left disappointed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I feel like this movie had some serious issues, and seeing how polarizing the opinions on this film has become, I have to say I am on the negative side. And the more people have been trying to convince me this movie was just beyond my understanding as the reason I don't like it, it has pushed me further. Rian Johnson, nothing against him personally, but his resume is brief enough to include here: "Brick", "The Brothers Bloom", "Looper", and directed three Breaking Bad episodes. That's not enough for me to just assume I don't understand his genius. Plus, his decision to methodically go the unexpected route with each of his plot points just didn't work out for me.

We are severely lacking in antagonists now. Rian killed off Snoke in a very anti-climatic way, which isn't bad by itself, but it left the FO hollow, with no cool Storm Trooper variants or characters, and no real officers. Hux was wasted in this film, and no one has come close to convincing me otherwise. Phasma was wasted, don't think many people think otherwise. I could go on and on, but I will at least say that there are several parts in this movie that were forced in to mold a storyline from. I've watched this film a few times to see if my opinions would change, but those stick out sharper and sharper with each viewing. I'll stop there and implore everyone to make up their own opinions on this film. But if you are hear on Metacritic, perhaps gauging other's opinions, then this is mine. A 5 out of 10, which sounds even crazier considering how passionate some people are about the greatness of this film.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. *sigh* This was a disappointing experience for me in the theater. You see I had expectations for this movie such as "Where are Rey's parents?" I also wanted to know more about Snoke. But I didn't get that in this movie. Instead I got a flying Leia in space, an unnecessary subplot with Finn and Rose, and... Porgs! Thanks, Rian Johnson. Maybe Phantom Menace is sometimes boring and has Jar Jar, but this movie is garbage in terms of story-writing and character writing. The visuals and the music are the only reasons for the 5/10!

While it does have its fair share of visually dazzling and exciting moments, "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" suffers from an absurd amount of filler and overall falls flat on many of the aspects that its predecessors triumphed in.

The Last Jedi is another episode of Star Wars. Pacing-wise is essentially The Empire Strikes Back but with a much blander storyline, beloved characters turned into cannon fodder and real life politics sprinkled all along the movie.

This movie has some of the most hilariously bad scenes in all of Star Wars history, only second to those great dialogues in episode II. Dialogue is nearly as bad as that episode, however we don't have to endure minutes of political debate. Well, in this movie you'll find some filler in the way of a Finn substory that is the most tiresome and boring set of scenes you'll ever see in this types of movies. Even political discourse can be better.

The movie does not well with continuity problems in the beginning and end and ends essentially making the future episode IX something you wish not to see.

The humor is pretty hit and miss.

In conclusion: If you're a diehard fan, don't see this, it will make you really angry with the direction taken by Disney with this beloved franchise. If you haven't seen much, it may be worth a rental or something like that...

Please don't hand your next flagship star wars film over to someone who's never made a big fun action movie before. Rian Johnson IS a good director, but the dude can't write star wars for beans. It's strange how much flack Lord and Miller got for not sticking to the story when making Solo, yet Johnson got to just do whatever with their biggest movie. It's good to not stick too closely to the lore or try doing something new, but this is star wars not an arthouse film. TFA was exciting, fun, and genuinely likeable. Rey and Finn had SO much foreshadowing for this film, but all of it was for nothing. Finn was all bluffing and funny in the last movie, here he just... gets called out for being a coward by Rose, and you think there's going to be some funny chemistry there (like he had with Rey) but nope. This whole storyline was pointless and poorly thought out. Leia, Laura Dern and Po have an even more muddled, confusing storyline that goes nowhere, also. Generally every time it's not Luke/Rey/Kylo ren, you can switch off your brain, it's a dumb sidequest. And then you think something crazy and different is going to happen with the Jedi half of the film (that is much stronger)... but ultimately, nothing changes, and it's all for nothing, depsite all the set-up. This movie doesn't feel like star wars for one thing. Also along with about three big mistakes and five small mistakes it just makes this movie a lot worse than it could have been. It's not worth watching and just underwhelming.

While I liked the visual, sound, and directing effects; I cannot deny the story felt dodgy to say the least. Most plot elements felt meaningless. I was sitting there at the cinema like “Is this a main line movie, or a saturday morning cartoon spinoff?”. Overall, it can be either as good or as bad as you like depending on what aspects of cinema you value the most.
At the very least I found it entertaining by the end, but it was still a huge disappointment compared to The Force Awakens, which in itself wasn't much to write home about.
It pains me to say this, but The Last Jedi was average, and I'm concerned as to how the final episode might attempt to fix the many holes created by this movie.

The movie nobody online can be civil to each other about. People love it, people hate it, and they think there is no in between. Well, there is. I am mixed with this movie. It has some great moments and it has some terrible moments. For the great, the movie is visually spectacular, exciting, exceptionally acted, well-directed, emotional and has an amazing score from John Williams. Now, for the terrible, the whole scene on Canto Bight with Finn and Rose was dumb and heavy-handed in its political message. Also, as a follow-up to The Force Awakens, a movie I still really like, it felt like Rian was trying to go off a blank slate and disregard everything that happened in that movie. Also, Luke's character was only semi-butchered; thankfully he does have an arch in this movie. But, overall, I am in the middle with this movie. But, that's ok because I have a right to my opinion, which the internet seems to be ignorant to that fact. Please be civil to others' opinions and don't go saying awful things to the actors just because you were dissatisfied with the character they played. That is a **** thing to do. So yeah. I give this movie a solid C+. I don't hate it, but it's not that great either. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The eighth edition to the saga left me wanting. I thought there would be more focus on Rey and Luke's relationship. Not much backstory for Luke other than his failure with Kylo. Still not clear how the images shown in TFA when Rey finds Luke/Anakin's lightsaber coincides with Luke's telling of teaching/failure Ben Solo. Overall a strange twist on hyperspace rules were introduced, expect books and comics to clean that up, as hyperspace kamikaze should be able to eliminate any fleet or death star per TLJ new rules. Star Wars: Episode VIII seems more like a culmination of all the reasons what is wrong with movies nowadays. A beloved, renowned franchise like Star Wars goes in the hands of a big company which is all into secularism. Sometimes I feel DisneyStar Wars: Episode VIII seems more like a culmination of all the reasons what is wrong with movies nowadays. A beloved, renowned franchise like Star Wars goes in the hands of a big company which is all into secularism. Sometimes I feel Disney movies are not movies. They are festivals. They celebrate diversity. And the worst part is that Disney, the religion which is celebrating this festival, doesn't take very kindly of the "infidels". As a result they are more concerned about the movie doing good in China and Africa than actually telling a good story. They can imagine little girls from Middle East play with Rey Palpatine dolls and porg/fathier stuffed toys, but not giving the fans what they have been asking for all these years.
One thing I really like about this movie is that it is able to deliver the needed impact using its CGI. The way they used the FTL to tear right across the enemy ships was so cool. But yeah, that's the only one thing I like about the movie. To show that one scene they ruined the whole concept of FTL travelling. Luke Skywalker lives between adorable Porgs, but he's only Luke Skywalker for the namesake. He doesn't do anything that makes us feel that he's important to the story. Heck, literally his role in the movie is that he dies!
This is exactly what's wrong with movies today. First they take a popular franchise that doesn't make movies anymore, or has a lot of books/games/TV shows. Then they get the fans hyped to make them realise they are about to make something big for them. In order to do this they sell their merchandise because they know the gullible fans will be absolutely ready to lap it all up. After that they will throw in some secularism - make a white protagonist, a black sidekick, an Asian man/woman who will help them, someone who is being oppressed because there's absolutely no other way a hero can be a hero if he doesn't speak for someone's rights. An important character should also be there who will do nothing other than fan service. An absolutely meaningless plot twist will also do some good. With all that done, just add a big CGI fight and get over with it.
So in conclusion, Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi is not a movie. It's a fan service. This wouldn't have been a problem if it DID fan service and not become one. We had watched this movie for a plot about Jedi fighting the Sith, not for seeing Finn free some fathiers. The movie is set a long, long ago in a galaxy far, far away. So all this SJW stuff doesn't make any sense.

Many of the critics are seemingly jubilant to see modern political points being touched on in a Star Wars movie, and thus it is championed as “brave” and “daring”, but don’t let that fool you; this film is as hollow as it is politically pandering. It may forever be remembered as the film that ultimately killed the sequel franchise, as JJ Abrams was left to pick up the pieces and then jam them together in hopeful desperation that they might stick. Whether it truly did or not is ultimately contingent on the eyes of the beholder. Expand

Every major character question or plot advancement comes down to this: "it doesn't matter. your heroes don't matter. Jedi's don't matter. Those intruiguing backstories you want to learn more about? They don't matter."

We get it: This is a NEW Star Wars, intent on installing fresh faces. But why all the plot holes and needless trouncing of iconic characters? General Akbar gets killed while the purple haired kindergarten teacher is immediately immortalized? Luke sees his old lightsaber, the lightsaber that Obi Wan gave to his father during his training... then was passed onto Luke during his growth as a Jedi... Yeah, that lightsaber? Toss it out. It's dumb. Doesn't matter.

At no point does Rey receive any instruction, training or coaching in the ways of the force. She's simply bestowed them and rises about Luke Skywalker himself in power...

Why did they go to the casino city again? To make a point about weapons dealer ethics and animal rights? Wait...what? (When they did get thrown in prison, a master codebreaker happened to be chilling there, with a key to escape. He must have been waiting there because... oh... that's right... IT DOESN'T MATTER.

The cinematography: Gorgeous.
The locations (other than a needless casino subplot): Fantastic
The writing: Very, very lazy and subpar.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Its not the direction I would have chosen for star wars, but its okish. There are enough things that I cannot get past to give it a good rating, lore wise. First of all, Leia should be dead, I call absolute bs on the force pull. Second, I disagree with the force link thing, I am sorry but it was never like that in the rest of the canon, once again bs. Snoke served no purpose, he claims the force link but as a master manipulator myself, he didn't do jack, it happened naturally, he just tried to take credit for it. And the biggest issue... LUKES LIGHTSABER IN HIS PROJECTION SHOULD BE GREEN!!!! Yeah, its blue. Rey finds Anakins saber in episode 7, and Anakins saber is destroyed after the battle with snoke. Lukes saber, in his projection, should be GREEN!!! GET IT RIGHT DISNEY!!!! Expand

Some parts of it like the star battle scenes you could say we've seen it all before. Having a little humor is okay as we did from the start of this series, but the way it was done in this movie was so campy and inappropriate, almost like they hired Seth Rogen to write the comedic parts. Those parts might have been funny if you are eight years old. I was not expecting some Oscar-worthy, mature-audience-oriented film, but I was expecting something fun that maybe I could see myself watching a few extra times over the years and maybe, just maybe, answered a few of my theories the way I wanted to see them answered. Some say I set my expectations too high, but after seeing The Force Awakens about 10 times and loving every minute of it I expected more than this. As a Star Wars fan, I would give it an even lower rating but I'm trying to be objective here. It wasn't just a bad Star Wars movie, it was a bad movie in general. I see a lot of TLJ haters commenting on bad acting, forced humor, the critters, the fact that they thought TFA was bad...in my mind all of this could have been forgiven with enough good stuff. I loved the critters, they were some of the better moments. What really bothered me were the lack of good lightsaber battles (not a SINGLE clash of blades), the terrible Rose and Holdo characters, the so-called "bold" moments when the director ended storylines without any warning or payoff....I could go on and on. I agree with the majority of the negative reviews here. There just wasn't enough good to make up for the bad. I'm as entitled as anyone else to leave a review. I'm allowed to dislike the movie as much as you might like it. I could write a novel on why this is the worst Star Wars film ever made, but it would be a waste of time. Just glad to hear TFA director is doing Episode 9. Expand

I’m a SW fan since childhood and actually loved Force Awakens and saw it many times in theater. That movie walked the line between nostalgia and new, but this one seems unconcerned with both. This feels like a reboot of a reboot where they are trying to wipe the chessboard clean and establish some episodic rhythm (as in TV show) instead of what we thought would be a new trilogy with beginning middle and end. Where’s the epic? Where’s the vision? The cinematography was even bland. I was completely unimpressed with the story..... I could go on and on. I always aim to be respectful of other artist’s vision, but this is Star Wars here, if you’re going to buy it for 4 billion dollars I want you to try harder on this story, these movies have the power to inspire a billion people and we deserved a lot better on this one. On the surface it has many elements natural to the series, and many that bear a striking resemblance to its predecessors, but that’s not why it fails. It fails because it’s nonsensical, lackadaisical, and heretical. Firstly the good: I don’t agree with the approach they took with Luke (just like I didn’t with Han in TFA), but I didn’t find his part difficult to accept. Reading between the lines and looking back and older movies makes his actions believable enough if you will it so. He doesn’t get bested by Rey; he abandoned the force and has no drive to live. Strangely enough some of the jokes were funny (success rate was under 50%, excluding Hux-related jokes which were 0%). Now that the good is out of the way, let’s look at this movie’s 3 main failings.

The movie is lackadaisical because it doesn’t know its audience. It desperately tries to appease to youngsters and older fans may be insulted. It doesn’t settle into a rhythm. There is a flimsy interlude at a casino, mostly just so Finn and Rose can rescue some ugly horses, but it’s like a scattershot cantina scene with zero personality. Numerous times—the movie frequently does terrible jumps between locations—Poe desperately asks for a plan as they stay one step ahead of the first order, only to be ignored or insulted for no good reason. Even Rey and Ren (sans stupid helmet thankfully) commune via astral-projection to allow for dull exposition between two opposing sides without needing to justify frequent physical encounters. The final lightsaber battle is pretty weak honestly.

It’s nonsensical because illogical things happen. The resistance (aka rebellion) are virtually nothing, despite so many previous victories. Laser projectiles curve downwards in space. The first order’s best ships can’t manage to spot transport vessels leaving the last remaining cruiser despite being in visual range. Do none of these futuristic spacecraft have autopilot? Two characters somehow come out alive in an explosion while the enemies that were surrounding them are toast.

Finally it’s heretical because it tosses the lore aside. This one it does deliberately and callously. It makes sense, Lucas is gone and all that deep lore is a burden for new directors/producers. Start with a clean slate, right? This is like cutting off your nose to spite your face. Lore is Star Wars and Star Wars is lore. You can build layers, like the prequels, you can add your own stories, like KOTOR, and, hell, you can even fill the gaps, like Rogue One. What you can’t do is wipe it all away and opt to not replace it, but The Last Jedi does just that. As the second movie in a trilogy you would expect to be interested in where it goes next, but I could not care less.

The entire Finn and Rose plot if it was cut would not have negatively impacted the movie at all.
Everyone who is a fan of star wars wanted to see Luke. What happened to him how powerful is he really? We basically got teased than a door shut in our face.
Wouldn't you be upset if a gorgeous woman (or man) stripped in front of you heavily implying this was going somewhere and than just walked away...

Not only does it leave you with almost as many questions as the previous movie, but there really is no character development for anyone except maybe Kylo Ren. Can we get some explanation as to why Rey is automatically such a prodigy with the force? Can she ever go through some sort of inner turmoil or any sort of loss or obstacle? I feel like the people who made this movie didn't even watch the original three, there is absolutely no parallels anymore. You could say that is a risk, but I'd say it was just a poor choice. Saying it is poorly written is somewhat of an understatement. Little in the story makes sense, and the sequel to The Force Awakens fails to pick up on many of the unanswered questions left open in the previous film. Events are clumsily forced, resorting to hand-waving at best and having competent characters acting jarringly stupid and out of character at worst.

Many of the scenes in the movie are rehashed versions of scenes from The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, with the original participants in the scene substituted by the new cast. Usually there is a little twist making the scene slightly different than the original, but the movie becomes frustrating to watch as it rehashes scenes we’ve seen done better in previous films.

Not only that, but there are major things in both this and The Force Awakens that invalidate previous films and characters and makes you question what was the point of it all? Luke’s efforts to become a Jedi across three films seem wasted when Rey can exceed the power of one of the most powerful Force users in existence in about 20 minutes without having any training. The victory over the Empire means nothing when The First Order simply replaces them with their own playboy-dressing Emperor copy. Clones are no longer needed to have an infinite supply of Stormtroopers for yet again unexplained reasons. Even the victory over Starkiller base in The Force Awakens is disregarded as The First Order now apparently have conquered the entire galaxy, despite them being left vulnerable to retaliation for the atrocities committed in TFA.

While some parts feel a little too much like a video game, the movie’s special effects team and designers have generally done an outstanding job. And it would be unfair to not mention that there are a few very interesting and intense scenes that are not only epic, but also manage to capture the personality and relationship between key characters in the universe. In these moments it’s nice to see what is actually a great cast given an opportunity to show what they can do.

Unfortunately, these moments are rare in a lazily copy-pasted minimum effort story that leaves you wondering why Disney couldn’t be bothered to get a decent writer or writing team on board for such a prestigious project, instead of simply assuming the masses aren’t intellectually capable of looking past the flash, and that the usual review outlets lack the courage or integrity to call a spade a spade.

But maybe the joke’s on us, because ticket sales are sky high and the critic scores are just about doubling the user scores across the web. For me personally, I have lost the appetite for watching the final chapter. But will people forgive the transgression or mindlessly shamble into the dark theater again next year? I fear they might.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. No specific spoilers (names/dates/places), but definitely references events in the movie.

In a word: lazy.

The Last Jedi has some beautiful sequences and impressive attention to detail in many areas - I certainly wouldn't say Johnson can't direct a visually wonderful film. Unfortunately, however, these details are betrayed by a stupendously lazy story that seems to entirely revolve around incompetence on both sides.

Most of the problems the First Order and Resistance have could have been resolved by having effective leadership - sure this is something that can and has happened in real life, but watching the two sides bumble around ineffectually is simply not engaging as a viewer. In particular the trope of 'this could have been resolved if you hadn't lied/withheld information' sets off a whole secondary plotline which doesn't even go anywhere.

Then there's the fact that the film seems to entirely forget realistic consequences for actions - a lone, stationary fighter would be obliterated if parked next to the enemy fleet taunting their commander. Similarly two soldiers (one injured) would be captured or killed if they crashed their vehicles directly in front of an overwhelming enemy force.

Adding in a convenient superweapon that is relatively cheap and effective for guerilla fighters will now take considerable retconning and handwaving to keep the in-universe logic believable.

High speed ramming someone to stop them performing a heroic sacrifice is a ludicrous solution. Not only is it a miracle that you won't both be killed, but also destroys the only hope you have of saving them. (Even a minor chance is better than nothing).

I could go on, but hopefully you'll get the idea. These are all concepts or scenes that were clearly played out to look cool but only serve to make every person appear blind, stupid or incompetent.

Then there are the story choices. This is a matter of opinion, so I appreciate that for many people the story was perfect. Personally, I felt Johnson was trying too hard to 'subvert' the story by essentially cutting every possible thread from previous Star Wars movies. I won't say it's 'killed' Star Wars or my childhood, but it cheapens everything that went before when you realise their lives, deaths and trials were meaningless. It makes the stories hollow when you see everything they went through didn't make any difference. Which bring me to the final point...

'The Force' is now a galactic scale as per this movie. It is characterised as continuously pitting light and dark against each other in the name of balance and will raise up force users to achieve this goal.

So...what's the point? If an external power is seeing to it that one side can NEVER triumph, then what are the stakes? What is the point? Where is it going when everything is at a permanently enforced stalemate?

It appears the real story is about some unseen motives that 'The Force' has, but we are consigned to watching it play with its toys instead.

In summary....

Visually stunning and reasonably entertaining but severely let down by lazy script writing and blinkered approach to the choice and consequence of story telling. On its own I'd have given it a five, but will deduct one further for making the preceding 16 hours of movies a waste of my time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. ***SPOILERS***

No. No. No. This was supposed to be the golden nugget; the Empire Strikes Back of the new franchise. Suffice it to say, I was disappointed. All is not lost though, as there were some really good parts. The scenes between Rey and Kylo are great. There is a real connection there and both actors are spectacular. The lightsaber battle in the throne room is unbelievable. Luke and Leia's characters are also really good and it's great to see them back on screen.

Now the bad news. The First Order is portrayed to be total idiots. Hux is a total p*ssy that gets owned at every turn. In the opening battle they have 3 giant ships and tons of fighters that can't destroy 1 ship. In the ending battle a ship the size of the moon gets taken down by the ridiculous tactic of simply ramming another ship into it (The Rebellion should just get their hands on 30 or so crappy transports, set course for the nearest Star Destroyer and hit the hyper-drive button. War over). Snoke's and Phasma's characters are a total waste. I get that main characters, and especially supporting characters, often get killed off in big movies to create the shock factor. But killing off the guy who is supposed to be the ultimate badass, ruler of the empire, shrouded in mystery force-God half way through the movie was a slap in the face. Snoke is portrayed to be the ultimate puppet master in the Force Awakens. We finally get to see him in action in Last Jedi only for him to be killed off with no big battle, no explanation and no closure. The same is true for Phasma. Who is she? In the 2 films she played in she was totally owned in all her scenes and seems just to be fodder for Disney to sell more toys. She again confronts her former trooper and gets her ass kicked in seconds and then is dead. Nothing there. No development or back-story whatsoever.

On to more bad news. Did you know this movie is a comedy? The humor and one-liners in the Last Jedi are too many too count. While I am all for not making a movie want to cut myself (Yes, you Man of Steel) or bore me to death there is a limit to how many zings you can put into what is supposed to be a serious drama. The jokes keep running in Last Jedi, mostly at the expense of the First Order. This serves to undermine their portrayed iron-fist rule over the galaxy. Moreover, the jokes are misplaced. I cringed when Rey made a joke about Kylo with his shirt off in what was supposed to be a dramatic force-connected moment. In the confrontation between Kylo and Luke I was riveted when the two were about confront each other but distracted by the joke when Kylo throws Hex out of his way. Bottom line is they made it all corny and goofy.

Hollywood sucks at making CGI people and animals. You think that movie-makers would have learned their lesson after Lucas' Jar-Jar mess but, you would be wrong. Riding on CGI animals, unnecessary creatures (shameless Disney marketing ploy named Porgs) and Luke milking a CGI Sea Lion are completely useless to the story and made me want to walk out. Somehow most CGI landscapes can look completely real but the animals look like Doom creatures from 1998. They suck and snap me out of the fantasy of the movie and back to the reality of the fact that its just a computer made mess. The whole casino-crashing, riding on ugly donkeys scene was terrible.

The supporting characters are not interesting. I didn't care about Rose, Finn, the entire command of the Rebellion or anyone not named Kylo Ren in the First Order. The characters were crap and their story-lines were useless, uninteresting or not emotionally engaging. The only saving grace was Poe. Poe wrapped me up right from the start and didn't let go. He is a wonderfully acted character. Too bad his scenes are often ruined by the awful Admiral Holdo, played by Laura Dern. Dern's purple-haired character doesn't blend in with the rest of the characters and feels completely forced. That, and, she sucks as an actress.

Overall, I was very disappointed in this movie. Rian Johnson has taken this franchise, which showed so much promise after Abram's Force Awakens, and sent it off the tracks. His ill-timed use of humor, lack of respect for the characters of the franchise and overuse of CGI (does no one remember Episodes 1-3?) doom this movie. I would rank it #4 in the lineage of the Star Wars episodes. If you have seen the first 3 episodes you will know this is not a good thing.

You are still going to go see it no matter what the review says. I just hope that the next film, directed by Abrams, goes back to the Lucas-style roots.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’ve written, deleted, and rewritten more lines of this review than I care to recall. The opening lines most of all. My goal was to approach this with a level head rather than give into the pointless rage that seems to be gripping many reviewers. There’s plenty to be angry about, after all. But the more I reflected on it the more it became clear that I don’t feel anger at all. I feel sadness. The Last Jedi broke my heart.

Rian Johnson wanted to take Star Wars in a new direction. I don’t fault him or Disney for that. This is not the first time that changes have enraged a fandom. It certainly won’t be the last. But this shift is not merely a change in scope or some bold new direction for the franchise. It’s a bellwether for Disney’s vision of the future. It’s the death of Star Wars as we knew it.

Just like thousands of others, I’ve enumerated my very own list of things that put me off about TLJ. But rather than nail my grievances to the Internet like the Martin Luther of Nerds, I think the most important thing to do is to add context to all the complaints about the “tone” of the movie.

Abrams and Johnson delivered starkly different messages with their films. Abrams tells audiences that The Force Awakens will “begin to make things right” and that what made Star Wars special can be reclaimed by a new generation. Conversely, Johnson urges the audience to forge a new path toward the future. Rather than build upon Abram’s foundation he declares with The Last Jedi that the past must be left behind. It’s true that Abrams rehashed most of the major themes of the original trilogy in Episode VII. TFA didn’t have an original plot. But it used that familiar structure to introduce new characters that felt like a part of the Star Wars universe. Those characters had the potential to organically evolve the franchise over the course of a trilogy. JJ handled the lore with care, like something sacred. He preserved the soul of Star Wars.

Johnson took an aggressive opposition to Abrams’ approach. He brought his audience a more original core story, but chose to undermine Star Wars tropes in favor of a harried race toward the future. He treated the groundwork of The Force Awakens as a list of plot points to clean up rather than as a launch pad for rising action. He made choices that forever closed the doors that Abrams opened.

The best example of this is in the treatment of Anakin’s lightsaber. In The Force Awakens it is a character. It carries weight and guides the action. It acts as a reminder of a tragic past as well as the catalyst for a bright future. For the last two years it has been frozen in time, waiting in Rey’s outstretched hand as her training in the ways of The Force is just about to begin… only to be treated as a slapstick punchline in the end.

I laughed in the theater when Luke tossed his father’s lightsaber over his shoulder. I wanted to find humor in it. Maybe there would be a lesson? Perhaps a Yoda-esque farce? But like most of The Last Jedi, it was an empty action; a cheap subversion of expectations. From that moment the lightsaber was simply a prop. Its role in Luke’s life barely acknowledged. Its thrall over Rey forgotten. The details of its recovery left to some future spin off movie. Where Abrams saw meaning and nuance in the rich history of Anakin’s lightsaber, Johnson saw a brutal laser sword that tethered him to someone else’s narrative. The destruction of Anakin’s lightsaber was not poetic. It was not a symbol for the conflict between Rey and Kylo Ren. It was a message: what came before is ended.

I’m not angry at Rian Johnson. I’m not angry at Disney. I’m sad that The Force Awakens was a one-off. It was a “Star Wars Story.” Its questions will never have answers. In the end it didn’t make things right at all.

The Last Jedi is a strange creature. I didn't hate the movie, but there were a lot of moments where I didn't enjoy it very much.

The movied felt like it was focused on too many things at once. It kept shifting from scene to scene, distracting itself the entire way. I didn't have an issue with the comedy elements, if it made me laugh, then it did it's intended job. And the comedy made me laugh more than a few times.

The fight scenes were great too and for a PG-13 film, they managed to do a great job with the violence. Cutting people in half, grinding them to pieces, slashing their faces off with lightsabers, that was pretty amazing.

Disney has been focused on killing off all the original characters and I really disliked that. Characters like Han Solo and Luke Skywalker are reasons why I wanted new films to begin with. But it appears Disney has been systematically killing off these beloved icons.

Further, the whole scene where Leia survives a exposion and uses the force to survive the vaccume of space and fly back into a space ship was just completely absurd. Whoever thought that up should be fired. I may be done with the new Star Wars film(s) at this point.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If this was a generic Sci-Fi movie, this would have been decent. Unfortunately because it's a Star Wars movie, it's poor. Rian Johnson took aim, fired, and completely missed the target. Characters were poor, the humour made me cringe, and there was far to much of it. The plot was a mess and some story lines in fact turned out to be completely unnecessary, which leads me to believe they were there because Johnson had no solid ideas what to do with some of the characters. Snoke and Phasma, two characters with great possibilities became completely irrelevant. Some of the action set pieces were great, but the final scenes were so poorly done. On the planet Crait it was a case of a line of Empire war machines face a line of antique rebel speeders. There was no imagination there at all. Overall the movie was seriously underwhelming. This will go down as one of the worst movies along with The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones. People are hyping it now, but in the cold light of day, when people actually reflect on the details, they'll realise it was a horrible mess of a movie. Expand

The movie has placed characters in it for no other reason than their colour or they are female, the tone of the film just never really made much sense to me, they are racing againt complete destruction and find time for cheesy conversations and general out of place dialogue to the situations they are in . The space battles and stuff is cool but the plot was a politically correct BS to be honest and was not impressed at all really . Force awakens was 9/10
Rogue one was 10/10 but this for me was bad .

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. THE GOOD:
-Kylo and Rey's force connection and discussions; interesting, although they kept interrupting them with humor that seemed out of place.
-The action; pretty cool action scenes
-Popcorn movie feel; I'm not terribly annoyed I saw this in a theater
-the hacker; Benecio del Toro's characters' brief musings on war and profiteering were interesting.
-Some of the humor; they used too many gags, but some were quite funny
-The acting, in general, is pretty good. Daisey Ridley, and, especially, Adam Driver, are fantastic.

THE BAD:
-The Kylo/Rey payoff; it felt lazy. The whole movie builds towards letting go of the past, and almost hints at a point where the jedi, sith, rebels, and empire are forgotten, and something new, that comes in the grey area, arises. But nope. Wasted opportunity
-Idiocy; The leaders of both sides, and Poe and Amdiral Holdo are particularly idiotic, to the point of breaking suspension of disbelief.
-Rey and BB-8 are still far too Mary Sue like, particularly BB-8 in this one.
-New characters we don't get invested in; Rose and Admiral Holdo felt forced, introduced too fast to develop character attachments.
-The timeline; it makes no goddamn sense; and who the **** is funding the first order. The empire, I get it, they usurped the galactic republic, with its massive population and giant economy. But the republic was back, so who the hell is giving this imperial offshoot the money to build supermassive capital ships and star system killing death star bases the size of planets?
-Disjointed; no real payoff, feels like one long chase seen
-Good thing Rose, a random republic mechanic, could deduce the method and countermeasure to a never before seen imperial system of hyperspace tracking
-Plot holes: big enough to drive a super star destroyer through.
-Wasting characters like captain Phasma...again.

THE UGLY:
-Luke; as Mark Hamill himself has stated, this character got a terrible treatment in this movie, and that breaks from everything Luke had been built up to be.
-Incongruity; While The Force Awakens was clearly designed to let anyone continue the Star Wars story afterwards, one would think at least a FEW of the important questions would be answered, other than potentially who Rey's parents were. Its very, very obvious that the same person who made TLJ did not make TFA
-The entire Finn/Rose subplot and Casino world seen could be cut with no drop off in quality of the film. It was simply a place to try and make a clumsy (and alltogether nonsensical) political statement.
-Misleading; The exploration of Jedi mythos and morality was just about absent, reduced to two scenes. Given the trailers, this feels like a massive deception
-leias Mary Poppins moment

OVERALL:
-It wasn't terrible, but it was also far from good. Easily the weakest of any Star Wars flick not containing Jar Jar Binks or Hayden Chistensen. Over-complicated, it loses its way, and pays off little to none of the series new topics and questions raised by TFA.

I never thought I'd say this, but I'm glad Michael Bay is back to direct Episode 9.

What a waste... of time... of money... of talent... of possibilities... This movie was a complete letdown. I saw a fan-made reimagined fight scene between Obi Wan and Vader that was far better than this - and it was only a few seconds long.

LIGHT SPOILERS AHEAD

I'm not sure what professional reviewers are doing. An 86 average? I don't think so. This is probably the blandest Star Wars movie to date, including the prequels (though the prequels have other problems). Even with The Force Awakens rehashing old ground, it still managed to establish the characters in interesting ways and lead us on some interesting plot lines with character progression, some decent acting and great cinematography.

But The Last Jedi had little of that. Honestly, I found it to be a bit of a mess, with poor acting and direction (which is alarming because I think Disney has said they'll be giving this director his own Star Wars trilogy!). The whole premise of the movie was kind of dumb and when I realized that's what the whole movie was going to be about, I was dumbfounded. The plot is next to MEANINGLESS. This movie goes no where! Little story progression, even less character development.

The two new main characters have little of interest in their personalities and back story, and one does something monumentally stupid that would normally make no sense, but which is shoe-horned in by a crappy writer. And I find Leia's literal force armor more ridiculous than all the plot holes in The Force Awakens. Oh man that scene was bad (you'll know it when you see it!).

I was really disappointed in the Finn/Rose/BB8 plot line. BB8 was charming in TFA, but here his antics are old and slightly ridiculous (guess that fits with the rest of the movie). Again Phasma is sadly reduced to a minuscule role. It's also laughably unfortunate that it takes them to an actual casino where all the greedy gather, considering EA's BattleFront II fiasco! Sadly, they rely heavily on nostalgia again...it's way worse than TFA. There are so many lines ripped straight from the original three movies. And while they don't rehash The Empire Strikes Back the way TFA rehashed the original, it still gives off some uncomfortably similar vibes in the closing act. Rogue One did nostalgia right without being shackled to the past films; obviously no lessons were learned.

The Porgs are an obvious marketing gimmick in an attempt to cash in on the baby Groot thing. At least they did provide most of the good comedy in the movie. Most of the other attempts at humor were cringey one-liners.

I simply didn't feel any tension in this movie, despite the peril the Resistance was in. I didn't care about it or the characters. It's like all the interesting arcs established in the first movie fell flat on their faces. Luke/Rey were disappointing. Kylo/Snoke were disappointing. Finn/Poe bromance didn't happen. Chewbacca was barely in the movie, and is sorely lacking for want of Han.

Oh man, I'm kind of crushed. I had high hopes after TFA did a reasonably good job of setting things up and Rogue One was surprisingly good. Now I just feel empty.

All in all, I'd rank the Star Wars movies as follows:

1) The Empire Strikes Back
2) Rogue One
3) A New Hope
4) Return of the Jedi
5) The Force Awakens
6) Revenge of the Sith
=====Big Gap Here=====
7) The Phantom Menace
8) Attack of the Clones
9) The Last Jedi

The only good thing about The last jedi will be the Plinkett review.

FYI. Bombs are only applicable when there's gravity.

Update: After letting The last jedi sink in, a few things have become apparent. First, as a stand alone film, The last jedi isn't terrible, but as a follow up to The force awakens, it is garbage. I can see why Star wars fans hated it. Rian Johnson (the writer/director) basically flipped off every Star wars fan out there. He took a huge dump on everything that was set up in The force awakens. Who was Snoke, who are Rei's parents? Such potential for story development was wasted. The last jedi should be struck from the record and they should try again with Star wars 8.1. I seriously doubt any degree of course correction in Star wars 9 could make up for The last jedi. BTW. Disney, good luck selling toys for whiny emasculated male characters and irritating SJW/feminism-driven female characters.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Some nice things in this movie, but also a lot of bad with that. The Rose/Finn side-story was kind of annoying and didn't really fit into the movie. Too much time was spent on their little trip. Every character just seemed to be off in their own-subplot for most of the film, and a great lack of character development didn't help. I never got emotionally invested in any of the characters. Luke Skywalker was poorly written, and very contradictory to his strength in the original trilogy. Kylo Ren continued to be a poor character, which is a shame as Adam Driver is a very good actor. He is very conflicted between light and dark, and comes across as very weak, and changing his allegiance numerous times during the movie. The scene with killing Snoke was also ridiculous, and Snoke didn't realize his anger was directed at him? Too many themes were just rehashed from the original trilogy, and I was hoping that after The Force Awakens was a nostalgia trip they would have written this movie to be more of it's own, but still too much just copies the themes of the original trilogy. It also went a little overboard with the kid-friendly nature, which begun with the prequels when Disney bought the rights. The balance with humor and seriousness was much better in the original trilogy.

Overall, it was enjoyable, but die-hard Star Wars fans will be disappointed seeing their favorite characters so poorly written.

Basically all Disney have done here is remake The Empire Strikes Back with a bit of Return of The Jedi thrown in to pad out a week and familiar story which made the film too long. At least George Lucas had a vision of six films in his head, all Disney are doing is re hashing old plots and story lines to milk this series of films to death. How many times can you tell the same story over and over again, i for one was very disapointed in the movie. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I enjoyed JJ Abrams's The Force Awakens. JJ Abrams managed to give his storm troopers a sense of character and individuality, they actually felt like effective soldiers; Johnson turned them back to faceless idiotic canon fodders here. All those intriguing elements like Rey's heritage and Snoke's background all got thrown out of the window, with nothing interesting replacing them with... The only question after seeing the movies how are they gonna deal with Princess Leia now... They should have just reshot the movie and let her die... Bringing her back from outer space with her Force swim destroyed all the emotional weight that was created by Kylo blowing her up... When she opened the airlock after her swim, Poe and the others in the hallway should have been sucked out into outer space btw...

What is up with all these low tech World War II space battle tactics?! There is no gravity in space, why did the Rebel bombers have to be on top of the New Order Destroyer to drop the bombs? How come there is only 1 controller for the bombs to drop in the bomb bay? I would expect them to at least have a Blutooth connection in the cockpit... Kylo took out the Rebel main ships command deck with ease, he didnt have to return to the fleet, he could have easily finished the Rebel ships off by himself! Cant some of the New Order ship light warp ahead of the Rebel ships and sandwich the Rebels? The idea of chasing the Rebels until they run out of gas was un engaging as watching paint dry.

Creating the Rose character was absolutely pointless, and they could have had Poe to go on with Finn for more buddy buddy relationship development. Benicio Del Toros character was only in the movie briefly but was much better than Rose, they should have just used him to replace Roses part in the movie. the casino planet was ridiculously uninspiring... Couldnt they have made a giant casino palace with gladiatorial fights instead? The sudden introduction of child slavery and animal cruelty was very distracting. Instead of being feared, General Hux, the commander of the planet destroying elite New Order fleet and army, Johnson turned him into a joke in the first scene with him and Poe, then later he was only on screen to get either choked or thrown against wall... The commander of the Obliterator looked a lot more menacing. Terrible direction with the villains on Johnsons part.

The introduction of the idea of how you can use a single ship to wipe out a force more than 50 times your size is utterly stupid. Now I expect the Rebels to use this kamikaze strategy every time they fight a New Order fleet.

Many questions are unanswered.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A lot of my reaction to the movie can be summed up as "but then why bother?", and not liking the weak storytelling in general. Interesting that some people online see the hate as a result of "subverted expectations" on Snoke and Rey. Maybe for a subset of Youtube plot-speculators, but it was basically the opposite for me. I was looking to care after TFA failed to sell me on it, but this movie did nothing to correct that. Snoke was and is now cemented as a useless nobody, barely more developed than Darth Maul and far less entertaining. I was dreading Rey's background reveal despite being my favourite new character, and while I hope she really is a "nobody", I can't exactly trust the word of a petty villain on that when he's trying to win Rey over.

The whole setup of the slow-motion fleet chase was underwhelming; neither desperate enough nor tense enough nor eventful enough. The hyperspace jump kamikaze looked very cool and dramatic but seemed cheap and problematic as a plot/worldbuilding point. The hacker mission was overwrought for something that basically comes to nothing, and Rose felt foisted on me without enough development. (There may have been too many characters doing things in this movie.) I was never a big fan of Poe but the way he's so deliberately "taken down a notch" here seemed clumsy and blunt. Finn was fun enough I guess but not that memorable in this movie.

The island stuff was a wash for me. There was some funny stuff: the "Force" leaf-tickle "that's the Force!" was *hilarious*, even if it was slightly too mocking. The porgs are cute and funny, but obvious toy sales fodder. Rey's training was insanely fast, but that's just Rey's thing now I guess. The milk and nuns were a tiny bit odd but sure, it's a little world-building for character, why not. The cave scene teased at something but gave us nothing, not even something disposably dramatic; just felt like a drawn out movie trope, "looking at yourself in the mirror" and all that. Force ghosts can obliterate hillsides with lightning now? Ohhkay... hey I guess there is a huge upside to being light-side Jedi! Yoda's lines felt rushed.

I did kinda like Rey's new thing of rushing to see what the dark side is all about but not actually being tempted by it. Sort of an intense but disciplined curiousity. Luke's betrayal of trust is interesting; it sure makes him look bad, a leader full of fear, but that's not boring. The throne room guard fight was ok non-dramatic action, even if the guards were a bit too "showy" whenever they introduced a new weapon. Leia's float felt a bit animatronic, and I thought it would have been a decent death if she didn't come back. Both "bombing run" sequences (opening, salt planet) felt really dragged out and lacked credibility. I cringed a little when they snuck in a little "Death Star gun".

Luke's final force ghost trick made him feel underused, sort of "oh, I guess that's it then". And all that just to delay the First Order a little bit, while a pathetically small handful of Resistance people are finally rescued after all that? I don't know about this Resistance, they don't seem very effective... better than the Republic government though I guess, what with being totally snuffed out in an instant. I did think it was a little funny how their thinking Luke must have gotten into the base somehow led them to look for an escape, obviously part of the theme introduced by the "blind hope" fleet escape plan.

There was a lot of throwing things away that had been built up, for not much gain. But the movie failed for me on a more basic level, just being kinda poorly written I think, and bloated; just never really pulling me in or giving me any payoff.

Don't believe the hype or in the force anymore!

The whole story with Finn and Rose was pointless and that makes the film even worse. Why they decided to include that and make a new character so annoying is just baffling to me. I have no idea how they plan to fix this for the final film but my lord did they screw this film up badly.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Left the theater thinking this was a 6, but settling on a 4 or 5 after a few days. Some more specific comments: 1) Did not like how Luke was portrayed in the Luke/Kylo Ren backstory. Seemed out of character. 2) Leia space scene was really strange and immediately induced a cringe. Probably should have let her story end just before this. 3) The light speed-ram scene was kind of cool, but my first thought was, "Wow, why didn't anyone do this against the death star!" 4) The filmmakers seemed to go out of the way to NOT give the audience what was expected. Surprise is fine, but with a movie like this, that's connected to lots of other stories, you still need to give the audience a bit of what they want (so maybe do it in an unexpected way). For example, killing Snoke is fine, but give us SOMETHING about his background. Also, no reason not to let Luke be a bit more of a jedi master, which I think many wanted to see. There's lots more of this. Almost felt like the filmmakers were being vindictive to more involved fans. 5) The acting was good, the score was great, and some of the visuals were fantastic. Expand

Some nice nods to the original and prequel classics but still very little done with the introduced sequel characters and overall plot to move it forward, past the history of the originals and the recycled elements (e.g recycled designs, scenes, visuals, narratives). Very vanilla, including the disappointing villain Kylo Ren, a watered down Anakin/Darth Vader with little emotion and energy. Daisy Ridley does give it her all though, so props to an extent. Film feels like an Empire Strikes Back with touches of ROTJ but with less momentum. Ironic given Empire Strikes Back already was quite overrpraised movie in itself as a setup for Return of the Jedi. A lack of acknowledging the end of Returns seems to have tarred some plot points that would have been entertaining had they been explored. Similarly, The return of Yoda as a Force Ghost was expected, a speaking appearance by Hayden Christensen would have tied together past events nicely, while pushing some ideas forward. Especially given the importance of the resolved Father/Son relationship which was where Hamill's character and Christensen both left off after the previous 2 trilogies. However some of the small changes are still welcome and less shying away from the force tricks and cute wonderous creatures is welcome, the kids and adults loved the reintroduction of such goofy features sorely missing in Awakens. Nods to the paranoia of previous heroes and self sabotage were somewhat interesting. Overall quality of battles is still a letdown and at times, still plays the nostalgia card a little to heavily towards battles in episodes 4-6. Film still could have done a better job tying the prequel ideas and originals and then one upping them in some way, which the prequels did through variations to the formula while still including nods to the original.

Too much recycling of the original trilogy (4-5-6) will appease the small group of aging internet middle aged fan subgroup and the small but vocal nerd bandwagon online, but Disney will need to do more to keep the interest of kids, latter gen x, millienials and post-millienials who also appreciated the prequels and their expansion of Star Wars characters, story, humor, lore, scale, visuals and the overall universe, from a writing and production point of view. Drastic changes will be needed to continue the series outside of appeasing 40 year olds and the Hollywood elite that want a token cameo for nerd cred to relive their childhood. Critic influencers and clickbait blogs may push the film, but know it benefits them to do so. Perhaps the final (9th film) can build off the series the way the prequels (Volume 1 to 3) did wonderfully. 5/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I feel crappy that this movie is getting such a backlash, but I think it's well deserved. This is not Star Wars, it's Disney Star Wars, and Disney has been pretty arrogant from the beginning of their acquisition of Star Wars...rushing through The Force Awakens and Rogue One and promising not 3 films over 6 years (something we SW fans are used to) but ONE FILM A YEAR. Starting - as soon as Disney's machine is capable of...who cares if the story makes much sense? They chucked out all of the "EU" that fans had contributed to (and George Lucas tolerated) and said "We've got our own direction" - the direction being a complete repeat and rehash of every story element and character arc from the original trilogy.

A young desert orphan wanting to learn the force from a reclusive old master on a quirky lonely planet, the Rebel on the run from the Empire after destroying their super weapon, a personal connection between the man bad guy in a mask and our lead, a side trip to a wealthy planet where a new character betrays our heroes, a showdown on an ice (sorry, SALT) planet with AT-ATs and trench warfare...we've SEEN THIS ALL BEFORE.

Beyond that, the film is full of terrible blockbuster cliches and no earned emotional moments. Within the first 5 minutes it jumps from a prank phone call that belongs more in Guardians of the Galaxy or Spaceballs, to suddenly a dramatic sacrificial death scene of a character we've never met...then picks up cliff hanger of the last film, where we are quickly disappointed to find out that Luke, the hero of the first trilogy, is a grumpy old man and not much else. Why exactly? Well, in Disney Star Wars, that's privileged information. You'll only get it in tiny flashbacks or extended universe merchandizing the company creates to fill in the plot gaps.

The plot, the humor, the characters are all negatives for me. The only positive is the cinematography, which is top notch. Expand

I'm going to be really short on this review. I don't think I need to write a 5,000 character to let you know what I feel. This review wont truly be spoiling the movie but there are hints in this review about what happens in the movie.

If you are watching Star Wars the Last Jedi because you want to see the older characters like Luke, Han Solo..etc, you are in for a disappointment. It's clear, this movie has been given a new director. This new director is practically throwing out all the old characters in a very disrespectful way. It's clear they want to start something new and they only used the old characters to help start this new path. While it's fine to do this, it's not good to disrespect some characters that people have grown up 40+ years with. Going back to my point, this new director is clearly trying to make a new direction for this movie. Gone are a lot of the subplots that the Force Awaken hinted and started. Gone are a lot of characters that have started. Gone is the main point of "Star Wars".

The movie is also trying too hard to be move funny like Marvel Studios does with it. The jokes/humor do not fit in this tone. There are way too many plot holes and very questionable character motives. Regardless, the final act (last 30 minutes) is where the movie just falls apart with character motives, plot holes, disrespecting characters, dropping subplots..etc

Garbage movie. If this did not carry the Star Wars name, it would be butchered by critics. Instead, it carries Star Wars so they must give it a high score. 4/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Very disappointing movie in many ways. Overall it felt very disconnected from the previous film. The movie did very little to build upon The Force Awakens, and it did not feel like a sequel in a trilogy. Whatever questions from TFA that were answered seemed very uncreative and uninspiring. The writers failed to deliver an intriguing story. Also, the way Luke's character was used was very underwhelming. Luke had zero action scenes and his humor was way too flipant. I could do without the SJW political messages, too. Disney needs to make sure that Rian Johnson never writes or directs another Star Wars movie. Expand

The acting, cinematography and FX are great... But the plot line is unbelievably bad. I mean it's just silly. I can't believe nobody in the studio was able to call them out on the plot. Great visual effects and sound stuffs, BUT dumb plot, poor editing, too many unnecessary scenes and stupid. And, I don't need to hear the soundtrack in every minute even if it's a good score.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I would have given this movie five stars, but the Hunger Games references really did it in for me. "We are the spark that lights up the rebellion." Oh please, I wanted to violently vomit at that point. It's worth mentioning that I hate the Hunger Games more than most. Unlike most of the pissed-off star wars fans, I didn't actually mind that Rey's parents were nobodies, because I think it's plausible that she is simply extremely force-sensitive. Having said that, I don't think gets to understanding most of what there is to learn about the force in a mere two minutes, when it took Luke Skywalker an entire trilogy. That is simply too unrealistic, and it's lazy storytelling. As for the story, it was too long, if that is a valid criticism of a story. And yet, it was too short, in detailing Rey's Jedi training, at the hands of Luke. Dialogues were god-awful, every single damn character, with the exception of Oscar isaac maybe, were delivering their lines as if they were the most goddamn important things on earth. The overdramaticism killed me. The first order was as laughably incompetent as in TFA, and not incompetent in terms of power and resources, but in terms of general effect. Sorry Bill Weasley, but Hux kinda sux, and sorry Snoke, you need to get a less glittery jacket. I thought the whole Luke-Rey-Kylo Ren dynamic worked out pretty well, and as usual, the ship fight scenes were too long. I would have given this movie 5 stars, also, if it weren't for the goddamn owly-things on Luke's island whose only purpose was to sell some more merch for Disney. Damnit! I don't think this review contains any spoilers, so I won't check the box. Actually, I think I will, just to be safe. Expand

Cons:

Overall, it was... ok. I didn't exactly regret watching it except that it could have been condensed by a full hour without losing anything.
