plenty wrong with his movie. They tried to provide some fan service, but the story made little sense, and just jumped around.

Not ALL the movie is bad, some moments are WTF if you know about star wars lore. The expectation was high especially after killing snoke in the prior film. I think only fans of the original saga are the most salty about this film.

Unfortunately, the result was half the movie had zero pacing - it felt like scenes were being crammed in just for the sake of saying they happened, and scenes stopped instead of ended, which is to say it never felt like the end of a scene was a conclusion to any meaningful dialogue or emotion. It felt like I was watching the first half on fast forward, as there were never any pauses or drama, and there was zero nuance to scenes and interactions. There was almost no character development whatsoever - by the end I found myself not caring for a single character, old or new, and it didnt feel like anyone had meaningful relationships, rather, it felt like we were being TOLD characters liked or disliked each other, and not shown. There were also dozens of characters introduced who could have had potentially cool or unique influences on the plot, but then were thrown away almost immediately, either being killed in a fight, or just never appearing again. The second half of the movie was alright, and the effects were very cool, but it still felt incredibly disappointing as the finale to a trilogy, especially a Star Wars trilogy. Expand

This is neither the worst or best movie ever period end of story. The movie has huge plot holes, poor pacing, and poor character development (for pointless new characters). However there are somethings this film gets correct, some of the action scenes are good, the sound is good, and some of the comedy hits well. So sorry folks this isn't a Citizen Kane nor is better than Joker (2019)it also isn't the new Mac and Me. 4 out of ten is fair rating maybe as high as 6 if you suspend the need for plots to be finished, but it is no zero or ten. It is clear from the first 5 minutes of this film that it is going to be a mess.

There is basically no exposition in the film, and I think that is possibly its biggest failing creatively of all its many failings. What exposition there is is flat out told to you instead of revealed. That is a really bad way to start a movie, and it suffers for it.

The exposition which is explained to you at the start throws in about ten major shifts in the plot within those first five minutes which would be more properly suited for a climax in and of themselves, changing all the stakes and almost completely disconnecting this film from the previous two entries in the trilogy right from the outset. This was not a good creative decision by JJ Abrams, and the film doesn't really recover from that unforced error until about halfway through.

The pacing of the film was designed for a hummingbird, with no time to even emotionally respond or absorb what transpires on the screen before we are off to the next bit of convoluted madness. There should have been half as much plot but twice as much time spent with the remaining half and half as many characters but twice as much time spent with the remaining characters. Less is more and show don't tell these are fundamentals of movie-making J.J. Abrams should know at this point in his career.

The film is technically sound in a lot of ways. The action is itself very pretty, but without character development there are no stakes. Why should you care what happens? Whether people almost get shot or do get shot or blown up, why should you care if you aren't invested in those people because you know them?

The acting isn't that bad, but there was very little acting demanded given the lack of narrative and character development.

This is the worst Star Wars movie that has ever been made, in my opinion. It is worse than Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. At least that movie had a cognizable narrative, even though it was a terrible and boring narrative. The acting is better in this movie than some of the characters in that movie, but that is the only thing that is better. This movie was bad in a way that makes the previous movies worse. I wish I had not seen it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First off, I came into the movie with an open mind and I really wanted to celebrate the end of a great cultural era. This movie benefits from massive CGI budgets and enticing action scenes. However, the movie failed to imbue a sense of importance with the weak storyline. This movie felt RUSHED and at times it felt like I was watching two different movies. There were moments where I wanted to cheer and moments that left me literally scratching my head.

SO many plotholes in the story make it feel like a disjointed experience throughout. ALSO, the movie kills or saves characters depending on how convenient it is to the "story". I'm pretty sure when they blew up that planet, a certain somebody was on the ground. They then magically show up at the end? Oh Lord, what they did to Finn's character as well removed any depth they had cultivated. Finn’s character has been reduced to screaming “REY” over and over again. They also screwed him over with a particular piece of dialogue he wanted to tell Rey but didn’t. My guess is that Finn wanted to revea
l he was force-sensitive in some way but they didn’t give him the honor! You have a whole movie where Finn is basically told to shut up and move along, to his own detriment. I do not like how actors of color have been handled in this sequel trilogy. I’m not some SJW, but they didn’t give any depth to the black and brown characters on screen. It was as if they were checking off a diversity checklist. I’m not complaining about the supporting cast, I’m talking about the lack of depth given to characters like Finn or his first order friend. I wish I could be more positive about it, but if you seriously break down the plot it falls apart very fast. I was left shaking my head about 10 to 15 times in this movie, visibly upset at many of the choices made. Poe did a great job in this movie! I loved his character arc, although the light speed skipping thing MADE 0 SENSE. Why would he pull such a dangerous move with only three enemy fighters behind him? We’ve seen the Falcon kill more baddies before. Why does it necessitate performing this dangerous maneuver? PLOT, that’s why. They wanted to setup Poe as this infallible, god-tier pilot, which worked for most of the movie but left me confused at points. I also like how they keep the gang together, which makes this movie much better than TLJ. I was not satisfied with the story, I could only suspend my disbelief until it got ridiculous. YES, i enjoy action scenes, but that's just good production, not good storytelling. The score is AMAZING, John Williams did it again. The comedic elements of the script hit about 60% of the time. I left the theater feeling dejected and numb. I won't be going to the theaters to watch this movie again. The way they used Palpatine was just weak as hell and made Anakin's sacrifice feel so insignificant. How is this movie about the Skywalkers but they don’t bring back ANAKIN? Not even as a force ghost?! Fans, go watch it for yourselves but this movie left nothing but a sour taste in my mouth. This movie didn't excel because of the mistakes made by Rian Johnson, something this film is quick to point out every step of the way. It's like they made Ep 7 and skipped 8, then made 9. That's literally what this feels like. HOW could Palps have amassed a fleet of destroyers FULLY STAFFED? Who fed these humans? The movie moves much too quickly for you to question ANYTHING. The way this movie was edited created a jumbled pace that made the movie hard to follow. The back and forth between characters are appreciated but the humor falls flat in more than 50% of the scenes. They also wasted Lando’s role in the movie; it just doesn’t make sense!

This not a cohesive story and just takes us on an empty ride. It weaponizes nostalgia against the fan base to make us cough up money. This was not a good story and I'm not happy about this. The Palpatine arc was so weak... I believe they wasted the great Emperor by bringing him back.

Both of the previous to entries in this trilogy have been in my opinion, extremely underwhelming, both for different reasons. The force awakens was although in itself a decent film, painfully unoriginal and extremely predictable, but had a good script with an alright plot and a good supporting cast. The last Jedi had massive sections that were just plain boring and had a terrible script, but at the same time was far less predictable and had an extremely underrated performance from Mark Hamil. Episode 9 however, instead of learning from the mistakes of its predecessors makes them all again without anything really to redeem it. The dialogue was cheesy and pretty awful at some points and towards the end the plot really dragged. The final showdown between the resistance and the first order was practically just a massive cringe fest, and none of the new characters are given enough time to be invested in. The film wasn’t all bad though, as it saw the return of Ian McDiarmid as palpatine, who is once again phenomenal. Other characters, mainly Kylo Ren are given a chance to fully develop and have satisfying closure in the finale. I think it’s also worth mentioning that the sith are really made out to be quite sinister in this film, which I personally loved. I also couldn’t help but notice a much smaller focus on the lightsaber fights. Perhaps it’s because of how badly choreographed the throne room fight in the last Jedi was, but I think the change of pace worked well and when there was the occasional dual it felt more slick. I guess it is worth talking about the cinematography, even though it’s pretty much the same every year it is once again excellent. I think an issue that both me and many fans are having is that it renders the struggles of characters like Luke and Anakin useless. What I mean by this is that, Anakin was destined to destroy the sith and end the tyranny of the emperor, yet here he stands alive and well, ready for Rey to fulfill someone else’s prophecy. Not only does it break the lore but it is extremely contrived and just generally bad writing.
In conclusion, the rise of skywalker is an underwhelming installment in an epically mediocre trilogy. It does have a few redeeming qualities and is altogether an enjoyable experience, but it’s not enough to make up for all of its flaws. This is now in my opinion the worst Star Wars film.

There are so many moments that exist that have almost zero logic for which they should exist, but they just magically do just "because" they give the director a chance to contrive something into it. The old movies aren't perfect, but what they do have is artistic merit, nuance, richness, and novelty, which is also essentially completely gone in this new trilogy in favor of spoon-fed, easily digestible storylines, shiny CGI, SJW agendas, fan service, half-baked ideas, all led by a perfect, invincible, all-powerful mary sue female lead. You should literally just pretend the last trilogy doesn't exist in the Skywalker storyline and treat it like bad cash grab fan fiction, because it basically is. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. An unsatisfying ending to the upsettingly bad sequel movies. It's difficult to find a trilogy where each individual movie is this loosely connected to the others. The highest praise I can give to The Rise of Skywalker is that it's at least marginally better than The Last Jedi.

Most plot points feel shoehorned into the story. Chewie doesn't have much to do with anything, he's just kind of there until the end where they make a bizarre callback to a joke about him not getting a medal for blowing up the original Deathstar 50 years ago. Even after three movies Rey still manages to feel completely disconnected from all the other main characters. She barely ever interacts with anyone other than Kylo Ren and when she does she just turns around and leaves. How are these people friends? The chemistry between Rose and Finn was so terrible they decided to abandon the whole thing - thank god. They also opted out of recreating the late Carrie Fisher digitally and instead have her appear (mostly) as herself in these abominations where you can easily tell she's acting out a very different script that is cut together with new scenes to kind of fit the narrative. You get that same feeling you do from the Star Wars with Tommy Wiseau clips, except it's not funny.

Out of all the character arcs, the only one that kind of succeeds is that of Ben Solo / Kylo Ren. It's a shame they just didn't really write anything for him, either. He just arrives out of nowhere when he's needed for a scene. They even have him physically interact with objects and Rey when they're doing that weird force projection chat thing from The Last Jedi again - multiple times. Which brings me to the next section I'm going to condense into a single sentence: that's not how the force works!

I would call this movie bad fan fiction, but at least fans usually respect the limitations of the universe they're working with. Star Wars died with the prequels in 2005. It's a great shame Disney is parading its rotting corpse in theaters for money.

Oh my god... I need to say I had a very bad time in the cinema.

I liked The Force Awakens, I REALLY liked The Last Jedi, but this movie is just a real big mess. I know fans will probably love it - they don’t need a good movie, they just want to see scenes EXACTLY AS THEY EXPECT THEM TO BE with their favorite characters doing things exactly as they want to (who doesn’t like superhero movies?), and meet fulfillness of their expectations. If you are a diehard fan, maybe you don’t need this opinion?

I know it was hard to make a third movie after TLJ - it was great as a standalone, but not as a part of a trilogy, unfortunately - but it wasn’t impossible and The Rise of Skywalker is clearly not the movie, which I wanted to see. The pace is quick, the scenes with a bit of any impact are coldly calculated, there is no place for surprises, and if there are any, they are funny just because of how ridiculous they feel after what we’ve got in this whole trilogy. The intrigue? Easy and full of accidents. The returns of well-known and beloved or love-to-hate characters? Cheap and unsatisfying.

It’s not a movie - it’s a collection of short scenes connected by a weak and barely holding plot. I was really sad in the theatre. I really hoped for something „just” good. Instead I saw this thing - as I wrote before, a collection of scenes prepared for diehard fans, ready to make this „oooooh!” sound when any of their dreams happen, well-known character jumps in or dialogue makes wink to the past on the screen. If not only for them - for special effect purists and people, who go to the cinema 1-2 times a year for the blockbuster movie, for sure.

But I’m not any kind of an expert. Those are just my thoughts and I don’t want to fit people into categories, cause it’s a nonsense. I want to show you, what can you expect from Episode IX, if you want to see a good movie and you have something similar to the archetypes I mentioned.

For positives, I need to say that Adam Driver is fantastic in his role (but he have nothing to play in the second part of the movie...), also can’t tell a bad word about Oscar Isaac and John Boyega. Daisy Ridley is somehow wooden as Rey, but probably we can’t have everything we want. Oh, and special effects don’t look bad either... until final act of the movie. But you will see what I mean by that. John Williams score sounds better than in Episode VIII, but you know, it’s great as always. And C3PO is surprisingly funny!

I wanted to like this movie. I was watching it and saying to myself „it will change in the next act, I know! it all is not as I think it is”. Well, it was, and for me The Rise of Skywalker is a disappointment as huge as, I don’t know, probably Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies.

For me that’s a really, really bad movie with zero stakes (you know, how’s it going to end just from the start) but also with TONS of fan service. You will love it if you have this „oh, it’s him! oh, it’s this! oh, I wanted this badly! ooooh!” attitude, but if you expect a good movie just as I expected, you will be greatly disappointed. Just as I was.

Abrams seems to just want to destroy all the work Johnson had achieved in The Last Jedi, and does so while failing to build anything like a well paced storyline. What follows is clunky and uninspired storyline: the first half goes by without anything interesting happening, and by the time the halfway point is reached the ending is obvious. What makes this even worse is certain particular character arcs which are brought to amazing heights in The Last Jedi only to be brought back to 'reality' with a thud as Abrams works his errata magic. This is practically insulting to what Johnson managed to do with his movie and is just confusing to watch.

There are upsides, however. John Williams and his team do an amazing job as always with the score, with the March of the Resistance being a stand out track. The acting is on the whole good, especially considering the lacklustre dialogue they were given. As with any Star Wars, the visual effects are amazing in themselves, and if you're going along purely for the spectacle and the magnificence of this Space Opera then you will probably have a great time. Overall, while Episode IX will always be remembered in my mind at least as the worst Star Wars, I would still recommend going to watch it. Whether you like it or not, this is the end of the saga that we have been waiting for.

However, rushed pacing, lack of character development and need to pander to the audience of the original trilogy has left this final film feeling hollow.
If you go to Star Wars for mindless scifi action then there maybe some fun to had here. As the finale does provide a visual spectacle that would make even the most disgruntled fan crack a smile. Beyond this, there is very little to enjoyment to be had as the opening hour sees a glorified fetch quest take place with very little reason for the audience to care. Then, when impactful things do happened they are retconned as little as two scenes later.
To misquote old Ben:
'This is not the film you are looking for'

From the vast and imaginative world, to the characters and their adventures - George Lucas created something unique and captivating. Fast forward to the release of Rise of Skywalker - an ambitious film trying to please fans while also attempting to "fix" the missteps from its previous installment, The Last Jedi.

Putting plot, editing and dialogue aside - Rise of Skywalker has exciting action sequences, stunning visuals and interesting new characters, such as Babu Frik! Love that little guy. Unfortunately all this unravels with its jump-cut editing, slew of MacGuffins, and an uninspired plot rendering Anakin's trial(s) and tribulations invalid and pointless.

With Star Wars having influenced so many individuals, it's a shame to see 42 years of Skywalker history amount to this. An uninspired ending, claiming to be different and monumental, when in actuality it's forgettable and abysmal.

'Professional' critics seem to be overly harsh on this film.⁣ ⁣ To be honest, this whole Disney Star Wars thing is a complete disaster. The first film wasn't perfect but it was good enough to get everyone curious. The Last Jedi is where they messed up, it was Disney disregarding the old fans for new fans (and weirdly not only splitting the fan base for no reason but also constantly calling old fans names for their opinion) which resulted in toy sales failing, the theme park not doing anywhere near as well as it could have (what do you expect when you take out all beloved characters that built up the brand to begin with) and even the Solo movie suffered for TLJ. People can argue that things like the theme park aren't losing money like toy sales, but this is Star Wars for god's sake, it should have been massive.⁣ ⁣ This film's biggest flaws are a result of Disney panicking because it wasn't making massive profits, injecting fan service in a completely out of touch way (such as 'Reylo', Palpatine and doing a 360 on 'all opinions mattering') they did it clumsily resulting in old fans still hating it but now they've also lost the new fans. It is an impressive feat. ⁣ ⁣ This was a disappointing ending to a disappointing series of films. Looking at the film by itself, it isn't as bad as CATS but 'not as bad' is a disaster when you are talking about THE Star Wars. Expand

Kathleen Kennedy needs to be fired as does Bob Iger for his poor judgement in handling this disaster. JJ Abrams put in every old Star Wars reference in the book and jammed in Easter Eggs and a flashing light show that will give you permanent retina damage. Best parts were Billy Dee Williams and somewhat better treatment of the lead characters (especially Finn). Best scene overall was John Boyega at the Resistance base at the end of the movie looking around the crowd - I swear he’s trying to find his script. Expand

It's like...you know when a five year old tells you a story, which is comprised entirely of short, barely connected sentences, followed by an "and then..." and repeated ad infinitum? That's this movie.

The acting is good, and the music is as stellar as ever, but that doesn't save the incoherent and anxiously-paced plot.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After this movie, it's clear that this is probably the most schizophrenic trilogy that I've ever seen. We go from light-hearted rehash to depressive art house film to convoluted apologia. It's so obvious while watching that none of this was planned from the beginning. The film feels like a movie 2 and a movie 3 jammed into 2 hours and 15 minutes. We get more details on Finn's, Poe's, Rey's, and Kylo's backstories when we should've learned this in the second movie. The damage control in the movie is far too apparent. Palpatine is introduced out of nowhere in the opening crawl with no explanation as to how he survived getting thrown down a shaft and subsequently exploding. The Holdo maneuver is handwaved away in a forced line before the final battle. The Knights of Ren are present, but do absolutely nothing except die.

The movie's pacing is a huge problem. We see four planets and follow four characters in the first 20 minutes of the movie and more if you count the lightspeed skipping scene. After that, the movie rushes on purely driven by plot convenience and never lets up in the same vein as The Force Awakens. J.J. doesn't want you have to anytime to understand what's going on because he knows it all falls apart after a few seconds of thought. It's really hard to write a review that reads as coherent given the nature of the film so I'm just going to move on to bullet points of things I liked and things I didn't quite understand while watching the movie.

Pros

Rey's character was engaging for once, though I still couldn't pick up on any flaws that were outside of her control (her parentage)

Rey's and Kylo's lightsaber fight on Endor was done well, though the lack of music was odd

Kylo was intimidating for once

Rey's escape from the Star Destroyer was well done. I liked how we got to see someone standing on the edge of the hangar for the first time

I liked how prominent C-3PO was

Acting was good all around

Cons

J.J. still doesn't understand lightspeed, though that's a problem with every Disney-era film to be fair

Force skyping now allows you to grab objects and have lightsaber fights at the whim of the plot

The Force Dyad, which I took to be a half-hearted explanation for Rey's power, is mentioned in a throwaway line and could've been left out of the movie with no effect on the plot

Force healing is introduced with no explanation as to why it wasn't mentioned in the first eight films. Additionally, this makes Anakin's turn to the Dark Side pointless

Highly plot-relevant vision that Rey has takes place completely off-screen. Considering the film feels very short as is I'm not sure why this wasn't in the movie

Hux was still used for comic relief

In the OT, when the main cast bickered with 3PO, it was funny because he was being annoying. In this film, the cast's treatment of him just feels mean-spirited because he's not annoying at all

Luke kept Leia's lightsaber, even though TLJ made his position on lightsabers pretty clear

The X-Wing that had been underwater for however many years still works perfectly fine

I didn't like how Leia's death was done at all. Would've preferred she lived through the movie if that was how it was going to be done

We see a brief flashback of Luke and Leia training together, taunting the audience by giving them a glimpse of what the ST could've been

Palpatine doesn't break a sweat from unleashing Force lightning into the atmosphere but Leia dies from...Force whispering?

The choice of Jedi speaking to Rey felt like it was at random

The writers actually thought that Rey ending up with someone who tortured her and tried to get her to kill her friends was a sane idea

The choice of planets (a mere three) for the celebration made no sense whatsoever

I didn't remember a single new theme. However, I did notice that the score ripped parts straight from Clones, Empire, and Return Things I'm sure were addressed and I must have missed Ochi's ship is in the same spot after all these years Lando happened to be on Pasaana after all these years There were coordinates written on the Sith dagger for whatever reason Overall, this was probably my least favorite film in the Saga, concluding my least favorite trilogy in the Saga. Ending the Skywalker Saga with a Palpatine saving the day just doesn't sit right with me. You could practically skip the entire original trilogy at this point. It's just the backstory of the failures that Rey has to rectify. I appreciate that some effort was made to repair the mess that they were left with after The Last Jedi but the whole trilogy makes it abundantly clear they should've had George on board and used his treatments. It makes me appreciate all of the original six films more, that's for sure.

He is way more creative and I’m sure he could’ve followed up the last Jedi in a satisfying way. The problem with Abrams is that he’s not good at telling stories so when you present him a challenge, like many ideas he set up being discarded in the second movie, he didn’t know what to do. So he attempted to cater to nagging fans and back pedal on the choices made in the second movie which left a movie with no clear goal in mind and it’s clear Palpatine was a desperate last minute decision which is a shame because given the right story, his return could’ve been cool. I still don’t understand the hate the last Jedi gets. Luke has a great arc in that movie. He starts out grumpy and ends up realizing he was wrong to hide away. This movie goes out of its way to hammer that point home again. Why? Luke already acknowledged his error in the previous movie. Saying it again just feels like a stupid apology to the overly entitled fans that cried havoc on the last movie. What really happened with the Last Jedi is that fan theories were thrown out the window and really hurt the sensitive fans feelings. Snoke didn’t matter, Rey came from nothing. These were 2 things that had people’s imagination running rampant after the force awakens and turns out their theories were dismissed. Dismissed for good reason. You don’t have to be a famous bloodline to use the force. Rian Johnson understood that. Snoke wasn’t important because it was always kylo rens story. I honestly could go on and on about why the choices made in that movie were great but I’d be met with resistance from entitled fans who want their Star Wars to play out the same way it always has. Anyways back to my point. The Rise of Skywalker is a pathetic attempt at catering to vocal fans and it resulted in the worst movie in the entire franchise. Terrible pacing, erratic editing, and forced inclusion of Palpatine with no explanation for his survival provided. It hurts my view on the entire trilogy now. Like I honestly don’t appreciate the first 2 as much now cuz I know it all ends in disaster. At this point the Mandalorian is our last glimmer of hope. If you haven’t seen it, check it out. Expand

Ultimately the only compliments i can give it are that they did well with Leia considering Carrie Fishers passing a few years back, The music is amazing as always, and the actors try their best. Adam Driver and John Williams carried this movie harder than theyve ever had to carry a production before.

The whole thing is a muddled mess, even being a visual downgrade from The Last Jedi with sections of the movie you can barely even see and almost no memorable shots. characters and plot points make very little sense, new extremely impactful force powers introduced out of nowhere, and what felt like a dozen fakeouts, several of which were downright insulting, and none of it is properly explained or presented reasonably. I struggle to think of a single character who wasnt mistreated by this movie, even Rey loses her characterisation and relatability in favour of making her even more powerful than she already was.

and worst of all, They uproot Anakin Skywalkers place as the chosen one and try to fool you with one line of dialogue. This movie is insulting not only to the audience, but the very franchise its a part of.

TFA told us the OT didnt matter, TLJ told us TFA didnt matter, and now RoS tells us not only does TLJ not matter, but neither do the prequels. Star Wars fans got Game of Thrones season 8'd.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I sat down with high expectations, because a movie of this caliber deserves that. Even after the previous 2 catastrophes.

Disney. Can you please for the love of God, give a rest to featured Star Wars movies and maybe just focus on TV shows around the Star Wars universe? This was an absolute embarrassment. I'm not sure what the intention was with the latest installment to be honest. Pleasing old fans? Answering unanswered questions from the previous 2 movies and filling in plot holes? Both failed.

Terrible, lazy writing, unoriginal. Shame on the writing staff.

I still couldn't connect or care for any of the characters. They had 3 movies to do that, but failed. So many unnecessary characters were brought back for no reason other than the writing staff had simply no idea what to do with the plot. PLEASE! LEAVE THE OLD TRILOGY ALONE! Leave those characters alone once and for all!

Return of Darth Sidious? How? Why? Oh yeah, you don't get an answer. Darth Sidious is one of the strongest, if not the strongest Sith Lords of all time, yet here is some random girl (who is his granddaughter btw for the "wooow" effect that also fails), who had minimal training and defeats him and slicing through the Emperor's Royal Guard with his now best friend Kylo Ren, like hot knife through butter?! Are you kidding me?! Also the kiss. WHY?!

Oh, by the way, some of the characters were just simply killed off if there was no need for them or if they writing stuff clearly didn't know what to do with them.

Jedi can also bring back others to life? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!!!

Again. Very unoriginal, lazy writing. Shame on you Disney and the production staff!

I get that JJ Abrams tried to undo the damage that was done in the Last Jedi, but the movie is rather disappointing to me overall.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Rise of Skywalker is an entertaining, action, popcorn movie that moves so fast in hopes that you don't pay attention too close. The Rise of Skywalker is two movies squeezed into one, and it suffers for it with scenes happening simply because the plot needs them to. The movie also goes out of it's way to retcon The Last Jedi due to the corner it wrote director J J Abrams into, minimizing the importance of Snoke, and having Luke do a 180° degree turn back to his original optimistic self.
The movie also fails to address the BIG elephant in the room, how Palpatine survived. The audience gets one throwaway line about it being "unnatural" and then the movie moves on, as if an old man surviving being at the center of a moon sized explosion makes any sense. The final fight of the film also has Rey be the one to put down Palpatine for good. In doing so it undoes the entire point of the original six films, which set Anakin Skywalker up as the Chosen One who would destroy the Sith after his son Luke turned him back to the light, in one fell swoop.
To top all of this off, Rey is revealed to be a Palpatine herself. After all the remaining Skywalkers have been killed off (including Ben Solo) Rey Palpatine looks into the sunset and says her name is Rey Skywalker, driving the final nail into the coffin holding what was the Skywalker legacy.

First off the reintroduction of Palpatine isn't given enough context and the decisions the character makes don't make any sense given what we learn about him in the prequel trilogy. He is far too calculating to rest his whole plan on Rey. The character of Rose Tico is totally written out of the story. I personally really liked her character and wanted to see her relationship with Finn explored more. Given the sad treatment the actress Kelly Marie Tran received after The Last Jedi this seems like kind of a sleight to her. She deserved a proper sendoff in this film and didn't get it.

Finally, this film in a lot of ways seems to ignore what happened in the prior film. I know that The Last Jedi was controversial among some of the fans, but ignoring its central insights makes the whole sequel trilogy seem disjointed and makes the trilogy make less sense rather than more.

Yeah, this movie isn't very good. Retconning, misusing classic Star Wars music in a lazy attempt to invoke some sense of importance for the big scenes... blegh. It's watchable, but its nowhere near as good as VII or VIII.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy where do I begin? This is a terrible movie somehow I rated Matrix Revolutions higher than this. Let's get started:

1) Palpatine What was the point in bringing him back, no explanation except: Somehow Palpatine returned. That is actually a line of dialogue in the movie. 2) Retconing TLJ
Now I absolutely loved TLJ and Rian Johnson direction with the franchise and we get no explanation why it is no longer canon it just is by the time the film begins. Everything in TLJ is just thrown away for the sake of crybaby fanboys who didn't like Luke in TLJ and a whole mess of fan service. 3) Kylo Ren TLJ gave us an amazing arc for Kylo Ren killing Snoke off proclaiming he's done with having a master, becoming free from any judgment by an authority figure was all great and what do they decide to do with that storyline? NOTHING, absolutely nothing. His master is now Palpatine all the story built from TLJ is all gone!

4) Fan Service Earlier I said that this film was full of unnecessary Fan Service, let's get started:
-Luke's character in TLJ is gone
-The Death Star is somehow in great shape -Han is back
-Lando is back with no explanation -TLJ is gone from Canon (Biggest fan service of them all)
-Rey is a Skywalker -And a whole lot more

5) The Ending At the end of the movie Rey goes back to Tatooine where Luke and Anakin were raised with Anakin/Luke and Leia's lightsaber in her hand and buries the lightsabers IN THE SAND that's right she buries the lightsabers in the SAND on the planet that they hated in the thing Anakin hated the most! Basically Rey gave a middle finger to Anakin and Luke and then she says she is a Skywalker!!! WTH!!!

6) J J Abrams Oh man J J Abrams one of my favorite directors (I'm being sarcastic) the man single handedly destroyed the two biggest space franchises in just 10 years. 10 YEARS!! That's got to be a world record. 7) This is the ending to Star Wars
Return of the Jedi was a triumphant ending to the original trilogy and 6 film saga, sure it fell short on The Empire Strikes Back but it still was a good film this however is a frustrating and terrible ending to a 40 Year franchise. There is no payoff at the end and it ultimately feels like a Disney crapped in the franchise right before our eyes. Truly disappointing ending and a disgrace to this once wonderful franchise

The Prequel trilogy have many flaws but having a cynical agenda and a lack of imagination wasn't one of them. Episode 9 is poorly thought out and its intentions highly questionable as JJ Abrams seems more interested in trying to undo the previous film rather than build upon it. As a result this film end up being completely unsatisfying and derails this trilogy completely by exposing, if it wasn't clear before, that there was no plan in place from the start. Expand

Rise of Skywalker seems like a series of random encounters, and when the plot would not work, they just said "hey we can just get Leia og Lukes ghost to fill the plothole". Script / story is almost nonexsistent, and even though i dont expect SW to have the deepest og best plot, this is sometimes painful to watch.
So i is SW dead... No I still have hope (in the force) and I think that the Mandalorian is a lot better than the new trilogy.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In terms of plot, lore and even logic, The Rise of the Skywalker is the worst in the trilogy, which is really saying a lot. The one thing that makes it more tolerable than the other two is that it's not a complete bore.

Make no mistake, the plot is beyond stupid and JJ Abrams, as always, has no original idea and recycles stuff from the old movies. And finally, after having many videogames trying to be like movies, we have a movie that tries to have the plot of a videogame. Instead of having a normal 3 Act structure like any competently made film, the Story of the Rise of the Skywalker is structured like that of a videogame. So inthe first level you go to find the McGuffin, the second level you learn more about the McGuffin, third level is just there to prolong the gameplay, in the fourth you are finally reminded what the plot is and in the fifth you go to fight the final boss.

As far as continuity and lore goes, this movie is a travesty. I gues JJ just said **** It" and threw everything in order to make it more epic: Star Destroyers that each has a Death Star cannon, Palpatine can now take out a whole fleet with his lightning, people can be healed and brought back from the death(poor Anakin, if only he knew), etc. But my favorite has to be the cavalry charge on the top of a Star Destroyer, at least once in my life I would like to have whatever JJ was having when he wrote that.

All this stupidity makes it at least something to look at, simillar to a dumbster fire, unlike the Last Jedi which put me to sleep. Not to mention that the characters are almost likeable now and they do have some chemistry. Rey is still a Marry Sue but she finally has an arc. Poe is a pretty good character when he is not having his priviledge constantly checked by older women and his bromance with Finn is still entertaining. Speaking of Finn however, he is still useless. In the Force Awakens he was the character with the most potential but here, once again, he doesn't do anything, other than maybe being cucked by Lando at the end. As for Palpatine, he is kinda boring now since he doesn't ham it up like in the old movies. Still his Fortress and Cult were kind of cool, so props to them for the first OT character they didn't completelly ruin.

Rise of Skywalker is not what killed the franchise, it's just the final nail in coffin of a trilogy that was dead on arrival. But like Palpatine's corpse, Disney will bring it back again and again until it stops making them money.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This was probably the best movie we could have hoped for (It was very still bad.) The Last Jedi left this movie in an unwinnable position. I don't understand how Disney could have launched this trilogy with no road-map or outline. The damage that this movie has done to the lore is unforgivable. They thought if they threw enough force mysticism at us we would just ignore the plot holes. Well it didn't work. The plot holes are still there but now we have a bunch of new force powers that basically destroy the franchise. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's like Disney/Abrams had a checklist of all the things the bitter nerds were upset about from The Last Jedi and decided to fix it all in this movie, whether the changes made sense or not. It felt more like a rebuttal to The Last Jedi than a sequel to it.

Complaint (TLJ): Luke throwing away the lightsaber. Solution (TRoS): Ghost Luke has a scene where he lectures about how you shouldn't treat lightsabers that way.

Complaint (TLJ): Holdo using a lightspeed jump to break a star destroyer in half.
Solution (TRoS): When someone suggests doing it again, he is told basically "no, that can only be done once."

Complaint (TLJ): Kylo breaks his cool vader-like mask
Solution (TRoS): Kylo's mask gets fixed

Complaint (TLJ): Knights of Ren were nowhere to be seen
Solution (TRoS): Knights of Ren are shown several times (but never really do anything or are relevant to the plot in any way)

Complaint (TLJ): Rose is a character *sends actress death threats*
Solution (TRoS): Rose is a minor side character with like 2 lines and her thing with Finn is completely ignored/forgotten

Complaint (TLJ): Rey's parents are nobody
Solution (TRoS): Wait, did we say nobody? We meant her father was the son of the most infamous person in the entire galaxy.

Complaint (TLJ): Snoke is killed without his backstory being revealed
Solution (TRoS): Snoke's origin is revealed. (however the emperor's return after being exploded inside a death star is not)

Complaint (TLJ): lack of a random slug-person on the millennium falcon
Solution (TRoS): a random slug-person is now on the millennium falcon

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For once I actualy nearly agree with the overall critic score as this movie comes in at just under a 5/10 for me.

Positives:
Some great visuals/CGI
Good musical score

Negatives:
Very weak and overstuffed plot with massive leaps in logic and story telling
Some truly terrible acting/dialogue cuts, especialy in the first half an hour to hour of the movie
Some lackluster CGI in places
Extremely tame and dissapointing lightsaber fights (especialy as they were promoting this so hard as the "best lightsaber fight in star wars history")
A truly cringy level of fan service from Rose being taken out of the story to Chewie getting a medal -_-
Poor pacing and too long
Complete disregard for Star Wars lore (not as much as TLJ but still bad)
Poor explanation of character motivations
Lazy and careless killing off of Princess Leias character

Overall this felt like a Disney script through and through and played it exceptionaly safe. Not as bad as episode 8 but by no means a must watch or even comparable to the original 6 movies. Very dissapointing conclusion to one of the most loved franchises in the world.
