Highly satisfied with the execution of this final installment into the Skywalker Saga. Wonderfully interwoven themes spanning all three trilogies and thought provoking story telling that leaves no room for fluff.

The movie is 100% enjoyable and it's a good choice for casual fan
Personaly found it to flat and superficial due to a poorly argumented dialogue which leaves many questions
Also, have some new characters been badly introduced to the saga.

Aside of that, the music composed by John Williams is, if not more, as good as the rest one from any other movie from the saga, just magnificent

To understand this movie as an end to a saga, you can pretty much just watch Episodes 1, 2, 3, 7, and 9, and it would all make as much sense as it needs to. Good job, JJ...you made the OT irrelevant. A note about the acting, as well...I feel as if the actors did what they were told very well, It's just that they were told to act as if the world just ended when they did the Star Wars equivalent of stub their toe. Mediocre sci-fi movie, even worse for the Star Wars franchise.

Characters seemed almost completely different from previous entries with only Kylo Ren having a somewhat coherent story arc.

Storyline made very little sense with a lot of plot holes and very little explanation of major plot points and twists.

Visuals and Sound were about the only great aspect of the movie, aside from some awkward CGI renderings of younger characters.

Overall, I'm not going to see it again till it has been available for rent. I'm glad I paid the lower matinee ticket prices to see this sad excuse of an entry in the once beloved Star Wars franchise.

Side note: I am glad they toned down the corny jokes and gags, it reminded me of the issues a lot of fans had with The Phantom Menace.

Abrams was trying to take this franchise, it unfortunately was bogged down with its poor writing and disrespect to the other films in it's trilogy. Adam Driver does a good job with what little he is given to do, and Daisy Ridley is trying her best with some very cookie cutter dialogue. A lot of elements were not flushed out to their full potential and overall, it didn't feel as fun as the other 2 films. I probably would've liked this movie a lot more if Rian Johnson had written and directed it, at least then, a lot of his ideas from Last Jedi could've been flushed out. Expand

The best of the sequel trilogy finally ends off where we began, nowhere interesting... But visually stunning and C3-PO stole the show!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Technically it's not as bad as rogue one or last jedi etc. It is politicized but what's funny that's not what makes it bad. What makes it bad is just that it's a bad movie where main character is flawless to the bone and nothing can ever stop her. Everyone else have absolutely nothing to offer and there are no shades of Grey. You can just support the only possible choice or die.

. And you see i even know why it's like that. Reason is because it is atargetted as a movie with a clear message for the kids. There can't be any unambiguous messages for children viewers to challenge the status quo.

Where the original trilogy felt like the singular creative vision of one man assisted by many and prone to happy accidents, this trilogy feels like a fads love letter that devolves into just the worst kind of Twitter argument. And THAT leads to one of the only things I think both fans and haters of TLJ can agree on - - that what this trilogy lacked more than anything else was a strong creative direction. In terms of story, character, and tone, it just seems that the this trilogy a missing a certain Feigi-ness. What JJ did in this movie is essentially ignore 90% of what was set up in TLJ and spend the first half of this movie setting up the movie he wanted to make, throwing in occasional, more obvious jabs at TLJ throughout seemingly to appease and service all the fans that felt so wronged by it. I think some people that hated TLJ will love this film for doing that but to me it just comes off as inconsistent storytelling. Now to focus in on specifically this movie...

I think, with the first half of this movie, JJ and the other co-writers in this film fell into an issue that many video game quest lines suffer from: McGuffin Russian Doll. Meaning that throughout the movie the characters were tracking down an object that led to another object, that led to a new character, etc. From my perspective, it amounts to making excuses to take your characters to new location after new location. And it is that faux pas in storytelling device selection that I think accelerated the pacing to a point of ridiculousness. Moments that should have hit like a train were give no time to breath. Character motivations, trials, and tribulations were skipped through like Netflix's 1.5x viewing speed feature was turned on. Don't get me wrong, there were plenty of moments I enjoyed in that first half, but truly, almost everything just felt rushed for that whole first half of the film. I do think the second half caught itself a bit, but without the fleshed out setup that was required of the first half, everything I liked about the second half was somewhat dulled. Without the context of the trilogy, I actually lean ever so slightly towards liking this film. But with that context (which cant be ignored) I'm much more on the fence about it. I enjoyed the ride while I was on it, but after taking some time to think about how this final piece fits into the puzzle that is the Skywalker saga, I'm a bit disappointed.

You have 40 years of cinematic history with complicated arcs and deep themes based on the world mythology, and a multibillion-dollar company with enough resources to hire the best screenwriters in the industry, and they ended up with a story where a bunch of undeveloped characters chase a thing to find another thing that will give them access to a bad guy who came from nowhere to kill him with a lightsaber. And the editing... I watched this movie in a theater, and it gave me a real headache. The camera never stops floating around, the characters talk fast and constantly scream, scenes replace each other so rapidly that you do not have time to realize what happened in the previous one, as in the next they already managed to introduce and withdraw a new character. In general, this film feels like a trailer of a few seasons of a TV show, and this is not an exaggeration. I don't know what went wrong with the production, especially after the JJ's Force Awakens which I liked (not loved but liked), but this new trilogy was a huge waste of a potential. And it's just sad. Were they not as good as the original trilogy? Of course but I think it is safe to say that it will take ALOT for those movies to be topped. However I went into The Rise Of Skywalker with a bit of a small expectation. I knew the movie was not going to be fantastic but the way this movie was advertised as the "Finale to the Skywalker Saga" gave me somewhat a BIT of hope. Instead, What I feel we got was two separate movies rolled together into one. The first half seemed to be "Damage Control" to the previous movie (By this I mean trying to fix what people were not happy about) and the second half felt more like a rush to get to the end. It is a shame because so many people are invested into this story as they have fond memories of it from childhood. That's not to say the movie is terrible as I don't think it is but it is easily the worst in the sequel trilogy (In my opinion) It felt like there was no main story flowing through these movies but instead different ideas just thrown in together and putting the "Star Wars" Name on it to make some money. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Despite having some decent performances, good special effects, the occasional cool-looking fights, and the same iconic Stars Wars theme music that plays throughout, The Rise of Skywalker has many flaws that are hard to ignore; Palpatine is suddenly alive again and a threat to our heroes despite having clearly been killed in the original trilogy because...the writers ran out of interesting villains to come up with? Rey can suddenly heal injured snakes with the force now because...magic looked cool in Harry Potter? Rey and Kylo suddenly kiss at the end because...every movie needs to have some romance in it? Lots of things just happen without any viable explanation or build-up purely to shock the audience. Still, it's definitely not the worst movie I've seen (I've seen much worse). But there's not a whole lot of positive things I can say about this messy, muddled story. Expand

The film is two hours of frenetic pacing and hurried, cliché writing as J.J. Abrams tries to erase Rian Johnson's Episode 8 tragedy and speed to a conclusion of his own. The result is a film that never stops moving, never allows for any real emotional connections when certain big events transpire, and turns into a Michael Bay-esque action-shot-o-rama.

There's plenty of fan service to be had, which is fine, but it's clearly being used to gloss over the major shortcomings the film has. Lots of retcons (not just of Ep 8 but also some of Abrams' own Ep 7), lots of plot holes, and a lot more Mary Sue Rey. Whether they realized it or not, the writers essentially lifted the Palpatine plot from the [now non-canon] book 'Dark Empire II' -- and that makes me ponder just how much better this could have been had Disney adapted the post-Return of the Jedi Extended Universe into a proper trilogy rather than throw the entire EU into the trashcan.

Say what you will about the Lucas prequel trilogy: They were full of Lucas' 'complete control' excess with a lot of bad writing but at least they told a mostly consistent story which Lucas had a planned start, middle, and ending for. This Disney sequel trilogy has been a bumbling, incoherent, inconsistent mess from start to finish and the only thought I left the theater with was: Thank God we're done with this Disney travesty for the foreseeable future. At least we have The Mandalorian to look forward to and if Disney is smart they would: A) Hand off the reins to the film franchise to Dave Filoni and Jon Faverau, and, B) let the Star Wars film franchise rest for several years before bringing out anything else.

Rise of Skywalker finally brings balance to the force; both critics and audiences seem to hate it roughly the same. I love democracy.

The plot itself is a mess, full of MacGuffins and conveniences. The first 30 minutes are completely hyperactive to the point where it's tiring and the film never recovers. We see a gross overuse of nostalgia and a return of a foe that should never have come back. Lame one-liners are not funny or clever. The overarching plot is designed to make it seem busy but it's just cluttered with random happenings. Why was it so hard to craft a three-movie plot arc? All the new characters (Finn, Poe, Rey etc) don't have anything to say for themselves. We don't know them worth a damn. Even Rose was relegated to a nothing character, possibly in response to her backlash. Hux was pointless and is also given nothing. It's like they looked at criticism and decided the best way to address it was to sweep the characters under the rug and keep audiences' attention diverted. The old heroes died for nothing and the franchise dies along with them.

To make matters worse, it unravels internal consistency. The actors do their best with what they are given. Adam Driver noticeably stands out as particularly good. However it isn't enough to keep me from feeling like the overlords were rushed and didn't pay attention. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Rise of the Skywalker consists of a sequence of set-piece scenes, some unnecessary, tied together by a spurious and poor story that is about finding a map to the evil emperor to kill him before he unleashes his fleet of planet killers. These scenes are strung together by (a lot of) exposition, sudden reveals (some that make no sense), odd plot twists(deus ex machina), coincidences and anything else that you can think off.

Just to give you a few examples of how badly things are done. Deus ex machina was originally a stage play device in which a god literally appeared out of nowhere to solve an issue or end a story. An adapted example is the fate of the Black Beast of Aaaaaargghh in the Holy Grail: the animator of the monster dies of an heart attack and thus it is no more. The problem with this story device is that it is a bad thing unless it is handled properly. In the example it is used for fun and it works. In ROS it is meant to end the story by having Rey defeat the emperor and it doesn't work because having to win by being granted godlike powers out of nowhere without a proper setup is just bad writing. Had the story worked towards this moment, in that Rey shows the ability to channel the force, then it might have worked.

Another bad scene is that moment where Rey jumps over a tie-fighter in the desert. So, why was Rey even there? The group is there to get a dagger that helps them to find the emperor. They have that dagger so they are just about to take off with the spaceship they have just found. But then Rey decides to walk into the desert saying that she needs to do something. It makes no sense for her to do this and it even endangers the mission as they loose the weapon and get Chewy captured. Making people do things that are explained with I need to do something is just bad writing.

At a certain moment the group goes to a planet where a former friend of Poe lives. She instantly finds him and in a few moments turns from hostile(wanting to kill him) to self-serving(shooting him for the bounty) to self-sacrificing(she gives him a device that gets them of the planet that she meant to use for herself). A few set pieces later the planet she lives on gets blown to smithereens. And some set pieces later we are shown that she survived without any explanation given. Ships that have been abandoned for a lengthy time work perfectly without much ado. In the case of the x-wing that gets lifted out of the water: you can actually see the seaweed hanging from the hull. Just to get to the next scene they ignore that ships exposed to the elements or scavengers will stop working. The list goes on and on and I have to stop out of sheer lack of space, but maybe the best example of how poor the story is, shown for the main story. In this movie the evil emperor is found to be alive. He has managed to create a fleet of star destroyers equipped with planet killer weapons. This is just told to us as there is no trace of this in the previous movies. Next he tells Kylo Ren to submit to him and kill Rey. Then he will unleash his fleet to subdue the galaxy. It is never explained why the emperor waits, where he got those ships from or the crew that fly them. -The good side finds this out and decides to stage a preemptive attack. But to do so they need to find the planet. So the first string of set piece actions is about finding a map finder, of which only two exists, that will lead them to the planet. This search then devolves into a series of fetch quests that lead to more MacGuffins. Thus the emperor gets introduced in an attempt to redo the plot of the first movies by casting him in the role of the emperor, Kylo in the role of Darth Vader and Rey in the role of Luke Skywalker. To hasten the conflict between Kylo and Rey they have a force link fight which is actually a struggle between the dark and the light side of the force. But also, in a more profound way, about being able to create your own destiny, which is the message of the movie. Granted this is the best part of the movie, but it is poorly executed and drowned by all the superfluous fluff. The end makes a mockery of everything as the emperor doesn't get defeated by either of them or them together but by Rey being granted godlike powers out of nowhere. The only thing that gets redeemed from the main story is actually Kylo Ren.

I understand that Abrams was facing a herculean task, but instead of doubling down, cut out the fluff and work with what there is he bloats the story with an emperor, another evil army, new characters and fan pandering. The result is a poorly written extended trailer.

The movie is just an incoherent mess of ideas, tropes and plots. Lacks any kind of nuance or sense, made purely for the "eye candy" effects and couple of sad/bittersweet moments. Yes Luke, Anakin, Yoda and many other characters were powerful but they also had flaws, personalities, they were able to make mistakes, lose, meanwhile Rey is an epitome of Mary Sue - infallible, incorruptible, all-powerful and completely unbelievable character. Rest of the cast is just "there" to literally hang around as replaceable support characters. Yes you could argue that everything in the movie can be explained by expanded universe, it even ties to Mandalorian, references books, games, comics but that doesn't make it any better - just more convoluted. At the same time the basics didn't change at all - it is still a simple "good vs evil" fairy tale in space which would've been fine if they weren't such cowards and took more risks with characters, made a coherent story spanning 3 movies and balanced pandering to fans with respect for the material. Disappointing. Expand

TheWatching Rey and Kylo Ren battle on the ruined remains of the Death Star feels like such an appropriate and pathetic metaphor for Episode 9. Rise of Skywalker is like a dog picking at the leftovers of something that's been dead for years. The Last Jedi was bad, but that movie didn't force them to center Episode 9 around a fleet of 10,000 star destroyers, each armed with a Death Star laser. The plot was nonsensical, there are so many plot holes and logical inconsistencies, and the pacing was so jarringly fast. The cast and special effects departments did a great job, but it was in service of a contrived script. There are so many moments that are meant to tug at your heart strings, but I just felt nothing. Abrams had the hard job to make something out of Rian Johnsons serious and numerous mistakes while also dealing with heavy studio interferences. The interferences alone made J. J. Abrams nearly quit according to rumours and he even said publicly that all The Rise of Skywalker critics were right. If I got it right they promised him that he could do what he wanted without interference and then fight him on all fronts. To be honest this makes it hard to rate. On one hand he delivered something truly great if you count in the circumstances and on the other hand the movie is still garbage but nearly nothing is his fault. The trilogy had no real story arc from beginning to end. It became a rag rug and ended as rag rug. He had to undo much of Rian Johnsons massacre of Star Wars in the beginning and give a satisfying conclusion. The first takes time away from the latter. But lets go to the movie. The story is weak with many plot holes and the return of a character who should not return because there is nothing in the prequel movies that points in this direction. There is nothing new for the characters. Rey still got demoted to Mary Sue, Finn and Poe are uninteresting and there are a lot of stupid decisions. I noticed that this does not help me or you. I don't know what to recommend. I would not watch this movie as fan but must admid that they tried their best. There is a lot better material out there. I recommend the Thrawn trilogy in books (Both the old and new) by Timothy Zahn. It would been the better trilogy if done without interference. Think about what Joss Whedon, the Russo brothers or Patty Jenkins could do with the material. Overall I will give credits to J. J. Abrams and a salute of respect for this but canot rate this higher than 4/10.. Expand

Well lets just say ChristmasA long time ago...four years to be distinct; the space opera ‘Star Wars’ returned to cinemas with ‘The Force Awakens', that brought back the bittersweet experience that fans have been craving for over 30 years. Well lets just say Christmas was magical that year. While I wasn’t quite as wowed as everyone else, but I still enjoyed it otherwise and I was interested where the story will go after J.J. Abrams left his “mystery box” of questions for another director to answer. How exciting and epic the next years will be.

And then the sequel and two spin-offs happened. Well lets just say my interest for these new movies has completely evaporated. And no I don’t feel like I’m being overly negative in the heat this movie is receiving, because right now, at this very moment, my thoughts and overall feeling on this movie are genuine, and re-watching it isn’t going to safe it. ‘Rise of Skywalker’ is a factory made movie with no heart, no soul, and no magic. Words and phrases like: bold, epic, and satisfying - are not the type of words that I would describe this final chapter in the Skywalker saga. I can’t call something bold if it played things incredibly safe. Each movie exists just to shred up and apologize for what came before it.

J.J. Abrams can be hit or miss sometimes, but I must admit he had a difficult task to follow up on ‘Last Jedi’ and Rian Johnson undoing his mystery box questions. If that wasn’t bad enough, the death of Carrie Fisher also had a massive effect on the story, and including her into the movie, while respecting her legacy and giving her as much screen time with the limited deleted footage they have. Abrams sadly treads on familiar ground and doesn't really handle the originals (or even the prequels) with respect. This is literally a remake of ‘Return of The Jedi’.

The story in this movie is almost nonexistent. It’s so rushed that you can’t catch a breather amidst the chaos. Nothing flows naturally. Characters running around and jumping from location to location. I think the quick pace easily hides the poor writing and plot holes. I also thought the title crawl is a bit off and felt it was written by a Reddit user. From the moment the movie starts until it ends nothing makes a lick of sense.

I think the biggest waste of opportunity is the character of Finn, because the potential of greatness was set up in ‘The Force Awakens’, and they didn’t do a single thing with it. I mean, a Stormtrooper who revolt against the corrupt and sinister empire, which is something we haven’t seen before. Heck, a long time ago he held a lightsaber. Unfortunately in this movie he’s a comedic buffoon that sweats and shouts a lot. What a waste of John Boyega’s talent. They did him dirty. I like Daisy Ridley, not so much on Rey. I don’t want to jump on any bandwagon here, but I don’t understand how someone can be so over powered and skillful at the force with barely any training. Whenever there is training it’s over before you know it. There was a point where I said to myself, “Who taught her to do that?”, or “how the hell did she do that?”. I really struggled to emotionally connect with Rey, because there’s nothing more dull than a character with no flaws or growth.

The strongest element throughout these three movies was Kylo Ren by the magnificent Adam Driver. This guy literally carried this series on his back. At least his character as an arc, and not just wasted potential. I actually connected with his inner conflict between the dark side and the light side. Emperor Palpatine is back...for some reason. The vague explanation of why he’s back made it clear to me that Disney had no plan from the start for these new movies. Still, Ian McDiarmid is fantastic as always. He oozes with evil and soaks up every wicked moment of it.

The awkward and ill-placed comedy from ‘Last Jedi’ is still present and it got worse and worse as it went along. With this being the finale, new characters still get introduce and get some development. Like, why are you introducing new characters now? Billy Dee Williams returns as the slick and classy Lando, but sadly doesn't really do much for the story. Richard E. Grant is great as the ruthless new commander of the First Oder with the small screen time he has. Dominic Monaghan, on the other hand, feels like an extra. Rose Tico has a smaller role this time around and her entire love triangle with Finn from ‘Last Jedi’ gets brush under the carpet. Kelly Marie Tran sure can’t catch a break.

The action sequences with the lightsaber fights and space battles were mostly forgettable. Even the scenes that stick to mind wasn’t that special. The camera fails to capture focal points with the grand scale lacking.

Overall rating: An unsatisfying conclusion. At least ‘The Mandalorian’ is good.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm left with one question after seeing Rise of Skywalker... Did this Trilogy add or progress the Skywalker story in anyway?  I think not. It felt like a reboot of the redemption theme of the Original Trilogy. Been there, done that. What else can you show me? To me, Star Wars is more spiritual than its scientific cousin Star Trek, that underneath it all was a force, ever present, which had a purpose, for those who truly listened.  However, these are those who seek power at the expense of others, a power that is short lived by our own mortality along with the destructive consequences caused by its wake.   In the end, the force, like nature, finds a way to balance these selfish consequences.  The original trilogy felt organic, human, without all the explanations and McGuffins. It's a simple plot about a son who wanted to redeem his father. The force found balance in the end with Anakin's sacrifice. This new trilogy felt more spiritual than the prequels, but told us that Anakin didn't matter, that his redemption and sacrifice didn't resolve anything.   I guess, from a certain point of view, history has a way of repeating itself, that those who forget the lessons of the past are doomed to repeat it.  Maybe that's what the new trilogy was going for thematically speaking?  They tried but failed.

The new trilogy didn't feel like a cohesive story, that is a common opinion I read about and I agree.   The whole "Who is Rey" issue bothered me. They drew this issue out to long. Should we have called it the Rise of Palpatine? Its like they were to focused on recreating the star wars twist, plugging the diversity checklist than telling a emotional story.  Palpatine's return didn't work for me – at least in the way it was presented.   TFA setup Snoke, TLJ killed him off and added nothing to the main plot, ROS pretty much said the original trilogy didn't matter by bringing back Emperor Palpatine suddenly and without explanation or context. The ROS threw to much at you, no room to process, no room for the characters themselves to react and process. It was more tell than show, very prequel-esq of JJ.  However, I do like Rey, Finn and Poe, just didn't like the story these characters played in.  What could have been done better thematically with this new Trilogy while ending the whole Saga with a Bang? Keep the Saga about Anakin Skywalker. Prequels were about Anakin's fall. Original Trilogy about Anakin's redemption. New Trilogy should have been about his/her ressuerection and sacrifice to save his family, the galaxy and the force. Here's my fix: Ben was kidnapped at young age along with destruction of Lukes Academy, Luke dissapears trying to find him, First Order reveals itself led by Snoke. Years later Rey "Awakens" throughout the trilogy and reveals that shes Anakin Skywalker reincarnated by the third film (why shes so powerful).  As for the Big Bad, the Jedi live on through the force, Anakin was so powerful that he was reborn as Rey, the Sith live on by possessing the bodies of the living or Clones. However, we find that Clone possession is short-lived and the Sith needs a living body (Snoke is this Clone). Which leads to the Sith Rule of two. The reason for this Rule is so the Master can take over the body of his apprentice when the apprentice kills him through hatred. The Big Bad, spiritually speaking, is Darth Sidious who has survived for over a millennia. Luke saves Ben by sacrificing himself, killing Snoke, in the second movie. Sidious is reborn in another Snoke body.  In the end, Rey and Ben fight Sidious/Snoke. Rey tricks Sidious to possess her, she sacrifices herself and dissappears into the force, taking this ancient sith spirit with her for good. Fill in the blanks with plot points that lead to the above.  This is one way to make the trilogy more cohesive, respect the old characters and keep it about Anakin Skywalker – that the Evil of Sidious went deeper than you or any of the characters originally thought,  That the force is finally balanced, that Anakin was the chosen one, that the force created Anakin/Rey to balance the imbalance by Darth Sidious. The imbalance, you see, wasn't about Light and Dark, Jedi an Sith, it is more about Life and Death – Sidious tried to beat Death and the expense of others. And it would have set the overall universal, human theme that death is part of life, it's a transformation to the unknown, that life continues on, that it's okay to let go.

My one little overall trilogy treatment above is one example of what Disney should of done in the first place - a roadmap for the entire trilogy.  You know what I liked about the original trilogy?  As a kid it felt more adult, real, human - not a comic book or cartoon.    Guess will have to wait 30 years for a remake.   But the truth is, the people behind this trilogy made millions on nostalgia and a first draft movie trilogy.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I know I am in a minority when I say I really enjoyed The Last Jedi, but when I watched this, I felt cheated as aside from a few very major plot points that could not have been ignored, it was mostly whitewashed over. This movie felt like it was trying too hard to accomplish 2 movies worth of story and action into a single one which truly destroyed the pacing of it and made my enjoyment so bad. From the opening text crawl which straightaway introduced the concept that Emporer Palpatine was back ruined it as there was little to no connect between this and The Last Jedi to get that he had returned. And the fact that the trailers had ruined that big return made it just bad. The first half of the film was flying between story points to try hard to rush so much in so quickly and there was just no time to really take it all in and my brain felt like it was being put through the spin cycle on a washing machine. Once it settled down and we got to the big battle towards the end, it did find its pace and place and felt much better, even if there was too much plariarism from Return of the Jedi and Avengers End Game.

In my opinion an easy fix that would have made the movie so much better and much more shocking would be the following.

1 - Don't ruin Palpatines return in the trailers
2 - In the opening crawl, don't mention Palpatine but just a deadly message from a believed dead enemy has both the Resistance and First Order scrambling
3 - Once Kylo Ren has the Sith Wayfinder and hits Exogal, have him come face to face with Palpatine, but we don't see or hear him and Ren just goes, "But you are supposed to be dead"
4 - Have no reveal of Rey being a Palpatine, just hints with "your not who you are due to blood, but due to actiosn" etc
5 - Rey arrives at Exogal to face whoever the big bad is and we find out it is Palpatine (big reveal great and shocking). Here Palpatine explains about Reys parents and that she is his Grand-daughter.
6 - Much like the film with Kylo and Rey combining etc to defeat Plapatine. 7 - No bloody kiss!!!!!
8 - Kylo lives and Rey dies(another big shock no one would see coming)
9 - Kylo returns to being Ben and goes to Tatooine to bury the Lightsabers and takes the name Skywalker as is his family name. Now I know I have been very critical of this film, but it is the Storyline that has the biggest issues to me. Too many plotholes and paced so badly. And I would say maybe a little too much fan service.

But on the plus side, I felt the acting in this was probably the best of the sequels and the actual directing of the film was good. Plus as you would expect from Disney, the visual effects were brilliant. Some little cameos were nice, like Wedge and Nien Numb.

Overall I have to say that this was a terrible way to close a 42 years 9 film franchise.
If JJ Abrams had been given all 3 films or if 3 different directors had the films, it might have been much better from a storyline basis. As it is, it feels like JJ Abrams tried to connect his 2 films together while disregarding the one he didn't do.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Before we start the review, I have to say...Tenet looks **** awesome! That prologue definitely opened me to a lot of possibilities as to how that movie will be about, besides a time version of Inception that happens to be in a Spy Movie. That "Filmed in IMAX Film" gave me a super great feeling, dude...
Too bad that, after that, the movie began.

You know, it's not often that I get an insufferable Movie Experience like this one (both for the movie and the Audience, especially considering one of these happens during a Universal Movie), and I'm sad to call The Rise Of Skywalker one of those experiences, because, for one, it started really strong. Palpatine's alive, Kylo Ren's looking for him, only to find out that Palpy's been internally toying around with Kylo. That could lead to some great moments. The Resistance is dependant on looking for a MacGuffin that could put an end to the First (or Final) Order? Ok, it's weak, but I'm sure I'll get a kick out of it. And, for 30-40 mins it was that. But once the first confrontation between Rey and Kylo happens, and we see that Rey is a Palpatine, that's where the movie just skyrocketed in a Pit Of Death, blowing itself up like a Creeper (pun intended).

Because from then on, the Screenplay gets so rushed and messy, that it feels obsessed with JJ Abrams and Chris Terrio (as well as Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly?) pulling everything they can out of their asses to make sure we have a coherent story that serves as a great conclusion, while really it just is "another Franchise Movie". Tons of ships flying towards 1000s of Star Destroyers to blow some **** up in a Return Of The Jedi-wannabe climax to try and have some Spectacle, characters (new and old. Poor Lando) that aren't fleshed out enough, and plot twists that are just the most random **** they sometimes made me scream or question in anger at the things they did.

Just so you know, they also rip off a sequence from Godzilla - King Of The Monsters. **** GODZILLA - KING OF THE MONSTERS (where Palpatine shoots lightning bolts out of the sky to "destroy" every flying thing, both good and bad? I've already seen that, thanks. It was really real and brutal before. Also yeah, still have to see some more of King Ghidorah). I don't know why they did that, but it most certainly resulted in an Earrape that I don't wanna hear ever again. If it gets an Oscar nom for Sound Mix because of the Earrape, I'll be so mad.

And the case with The Last Jedi is mostly on the Screenplay's decision, making it a Love/Hate situation. A "will they/won't they" scenario, because either, Characters feel so desperate narrating backstories from that movie, or they just ruin the whole Force Conversation thing by making objects suddenly disappear from one another's location. Like okay, that also happened in Last Jedi, but only for a few seconds, and with smaller objects, not Darth Vader's burned helmet.

But hey, at least the technical department is still strong. The Art Department is once again great eye candy to look at, despite the Cinematography being too quick in parts, and I love the new look of Palpatine (the menacing figure moving with the help of a machine, GLaDOS Style? Cool!).

But again, I shouldn't be complaining too much because "the Fans will love this laziness!". Look, I'm not stopping you to see it, because if you want, go ahead. I'm sure you'll like it better than I did. But if you loved The Last Jedi as much as I did, then be sure of the random madness that this movie will give you. Not awful, but certainly a spectacularly insufferable and artful mess.

A sad desperate attempt to make up for the lack of work done on the last two films. It’s as desperate as you imagine and all the worse for it. A real waste of three story telling opportunities.

Flat and lifeless. I just didn't connect to the characters at all.

My kids split on it, one gave it a B and the other a C-. I was just happy when it ended.

I love Star Wars, but every single movie has things to love and things to complain about, and I’m fine with that. It’s about the spirit and the characters. There’s plenty of good stuff in Rise of Skywalker, too, but I’ve never felt such emptiness from any of the movies. This felt like it was somehow both trying too hard and phoning it in at the same time. I like the three main heroes from the new trilogy, and Kylo, and I still love and care about Rey, but their journeys felt perfunctory and predictable here. And the story, almost everything is either over-explained or under-explained. The scale was overly epic but without making me believe in it or care about what’s happening—kind of like the worst of modern comic book movies.
The opening crawl was great and got me excited, but it really was almost immediately downhill from there for me. There’s too much fan service and too little storytelling that actually makes a viewer care. In the end, it made this final trilogy feel completely unnecessary (with the exception of introducing Rey and Kylo). It’s the first Star Wars that I have no desire to see more than once.

It is sad, but the movie is just the justification to Disney of becoming this universe in a representation of the politically correct of the world that did not exist in the original stories. Star Wars is dead in this moment.

Structured around weak and ludicrous plot devices, and in too many ways using a xeroxed template from "Return of the Jedi", itself a very flawed film. I'm absolutely certain that when a nine-film narrative arc was originally envisaged all those decades ago, nobody was expecting episodes 7,8,9 would end up being done as simple rehashes of the immediately prior eps of 4,5,6. Excruciating. Thank God it's over. Expand

The Rise of Skywalker is a much better attempt at making a good Star Wars movie. I will give JJ Abrams credit for trying to correct some of the mistakes Rian Johnson made with Luke. And I will also give JJ credit for actually showing Rey training. And I will give him credit for trying to make a satisfying ending. I like that we actually know who Rey is now. That being said I don't like that they brought Darth Sidious back. I understand why they did it but It's pretty dumb and cheesy. I continue to hate how Disney Star Wars uses the force. They show characters using the force in ways that are not possible given what we learned and know from episodes 4,5,6,1,2,3... Sorry but this isn't Star Wars because they don't go on the already established rules of Star Wars. It's a high budget fan film made by someone that never really understood it or just doesn't care. If Rey wasn't a Mary Sue before this she definitely is now.. One training scene doesn't justify her using the force like she did. No Jedi has ever used the force the way she did in the movie. It's completely ridiculous. Also the way Kylo communicates with her through the force and grabbing her necklace is ridiculous too.. JJ give George Lucas a call and have him give you a lesson on how the force can and cannot be used.. Rey uses the force to bring Kylo back to life. The only person that knows how to do that is Darth Sidious.. So how did Rey know how to do it? Did he train her? It just doesn't make logical sense.. Passing lightsabers through the force was dumb.. This isn't a bad movie overall. But it's a bad Star Wars movie. I don't and never will consider any Disney Star Wars movie or tv show to be real Star Wars. That goes for The Mandalorian too... They are all full of gender politics and woke propaganda. I don't care if the entire world loves baby Yoda and The Mandalorian. That show is trash too. Everything Disney touches is woke with far left ideology. And they continue to make up their own rules about the force. Expand

Like even the ending was just meh, it was hard to care about a lot of what the movies brings that is because the Last Jedi messed everything up a lot but it's also because JJ Abrams just does a meh job. I wish they stuck with Colin Trevorrow as I think he would've done a better job than JJ Abrams. But all around this movie gets a meh which is a 4 it would've gotten a 5 but it's so mediocre that it earns a 4. As I said there's nothing that blew me away and there's nothing that really made me pissed off it was just a whole lot of mediocrity.

What probably frustrates me the most is that Disney has been able to create good Star Wars content, the Solo movie I thought was a good film, Rogue One which was also a good film, the Mandalorian has been said to be pretty good even though I haven't watched it personally and even Star Wars Rebels was decent.

Edit: Just finished the Mandolorian and I thought it was really good, It doesn't feel like Star Wars exactly though but I think that's a good thing it's more refreshing and feels like something new and cool. So Disney is really good at making spinoff movies and series but just not able to make very good main saga movies...

Right off the bat, this is a better film than The Last Jedi. However, this isn't saying much since that movie was a complete pile of garbage from a film and story telling perspective, as well as being part of the Star Wars lore. Star Wars:Right off the bat, this is a better film than The Last Jedi. However, this isn't saying much since that movie was a complete pile of garbage from a film and story telling perspective, as well as being part of the Star Wars lore. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is still a bad movie that barely borders on being passable.

For being the ending to this incredibly schizophrenic trilogy, it does very little to answer or resolve much, and as many others have stated, this feels like two films Frankensteined into one movie. No doubt this was to try and fix many of the issues that The Last Jedi created, however the repairs to the lore, story, and characters were not only insufficient for the most part, but really too late to do any real good. You will still wonder why the hell Rey is so gifted and powerful, you still will wonder how Palpatine came back from Return of the Jedi, and you still won't know who the Resistance is or the First Order by the end of this film. These unanswered questions, and many more, just add to the confusion of a movie that jumps around so much in terms of editing and story that you'd be forgiven for not knowing what's going on a times.

Visually the Rise of Skywalker is a pretty film, with a lot of dramatic, epic shots. The lightsaber battles are decent, the CGI and special effects look good for the most part, and there was a great deal of care and attention given to props and set pieces throughout. It is these Oooos and Ahhhs that will keep many audience member's distracted from the films many shortcomings, but they are worth praising for the most part. In the audio department John Williams score is among his most unremarkable to date, however it still is decent enough and compliments the story and action on the screen.

As a casual movie goer, you will probably think The Rise of Skywalker is at worst a fairly boring, somewhat confusing film, especially if you've been keeping up with Disney's Trilogy. As a diehard Star Wars fan though, you will likely dislike this movie to some degree given how badly it fails at making sense of anything this trilogy has set up. Its claim to be the end of the "Skywalker Saga" makes this all the more confusing as watching the Return of the Jedi seems to have been the true end to the saga, while The Rise of Skywalker just feels superfluous and tacked on for the sake of making money and bating people's nostalgia for the original trilogy. The Rise of Skywalker is a bad movie, and an even worse Star Wars movie. However, it does pass as lowbrow entertainment and something casual viewers might enjoy for being the big holiday blockbuster. Just don't expect this film to give a satisfying conclusion to Disney's sequel trilogy, and especially not to the "Skywalker Saga" which ended in 1983.

I'll give it credit for some visual sequences that dispel cinematic wonder and a tone that J.J. Abrams brings which reignites a life in this trilogy, but everything from the characters to the plot just felt out of sorts. Not a good movie, and perhaps makes more sins than it thinks it's correcting. Poor writing in this one. Expand

JustAll fans wanted was a good Star Wars movie with better story, better characters, and more world-building...and those ideas are gone, completely ignored. If you like The Rise of Skywalker or the sequel trilogy aa a while, good for you. Just don't go bashing the Star Wars fans that hate this trilogy because all you care about is action, not story.

The Rise of Skywalker is a mess and the sequel trilogy as a whole. There was an idea that got retcon that turned everything to BS. A lot of plotholes that were never explained, Rey being a Mary Sue, disrespecting the original cast, ruining the last 6 movies, pulling Palpatine as the main villain AGAIN out of their ass in the new movies...WHAT WAS THE POINT OF THIS TRILOGY, SERIOUSLY? MONEY? They gave us something that's pointless for money. I'll say this, if it weren't for this trilogy, the prequels would still be hated. Yeah, they're still bad but as story goes it has good ideas and know what's going for...it just didn't have good execution.

This trilogy is always fighting with each other, if JJ was the writer for the other 2 movies, maybe they'll be a little better. To the sequel fans, you don't care about the story. You care about action, lightsabers, visual effects, explosions...good for you. Don't go telling people who used to be Star Wars fans "you are haters" "it's better than the previous trilogies" "go in open-minded and maybe you'll like the film." No, just no. You guys already have your Disney crap, all we wanted was Star Wars to be good again with something new and simple but effective and character development and not hard cash grab with so many nostalgia factor and changing some rules of this franchise and moments that don't feel earned the Disney Star Wars.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Palpatine is a bad luck charm with Star Wars, every film he appears in is bad. The Prequels (Which don't need explanation), Return of the Jedi was a very lame film with lots of pacing issues in the 1st act, guess who's in the film...Palpatine. Episode 9, mostly mixed and negative reviews, pacing bad. Now you may say that Palpatine was in Empire which is the best film, but first of all he shows up in only one scene as a hologram. Also, in the original Emperor he was played by Clive Revill, not Ian McDiarmid. George Lucas made a deal with the devil to get the best actor possible for Palpatine, but in return the devil made it so every film he's in is bad. But that's just a theory... a film theory Expand

For the duration of the film I was entertained. It did not destroy the franchise like the last movie, but it also didn't resurrect it from the failures of the last Jedi. Rectifying the problems of the last movie is a big ask, and not really possible but it is clear that some effort was made to ignore or quickly resolve issues caused by the last movie. I'm glad they didn't spend too much time on this, and tried to make an entertaining film instead. The visual effects were quite good. The plot was all over the place. People die, then come back to life, only to die again and then come back again and then die again to the point that death has no consequences. So it was pulpy nonsense with space ships and light sabres. Probably worth waiting for the Netflix release. Expand

New information is thrown at you with no repose, character arcs are either self-contradictory, or completely non-existent, and it's score, while amazing, has some questionable placement throughout the run-time of the movie. Even it's message isn't well-executed. For a movie trying to be about not letting your background or history define you, all I have learned is that in the Star Wars universe, you don't matter unless you're either a Skywalker or Palpatine, and that your roots are all-consuming. This film serves as a lesson as to what happens when you create a trilogy without a plan, and obsess over trying to address criticisms of its predecessor. Expand

Yet it failed to impress due to bad execution and the plot being too much of a copy of Episode IV. It did however have the potential to set up a great trilogy.
Episode VIII then threw all of that out the window, turned the best of the new characters into a comedy relief and his only interresting and emotional scene into a cringefest, while the established characters were turned on their head or just killed in the background and the movie got lost in pointless sideplots.

Episode IX - well...
It relies on bringing back the villain of the previous trilogy from the dead, which would have been a decent plot twist had it not been spoiled by the trailers.
Great start...

Since the predecessors did such a poor job of building up story and characters the movie has to spend its first half doing that, leading to massive pacing issues.
Abrams throws in some of the cheapest and most uncreative tropes possible to archieve this and keep the plot going, using the overly fast pacing to distract from how outright stupid and artificial the whole thing is.

The second half seems much better on the surface, but falls apart as soon as you turn your brain on.
Many scenes require you to just accept that a certain premise is true even though its painfully obvious how nonsensical it is, a lot of other things are just so awfully convenient for the plot that they feel extremely unnatural.
And the force is completely bent into oblivion, now being capable of teleportation and whatever else.

And the End...
That might have actually been at least decent, had Rey been built up as a character that you could care about and be emotionally invested in.
But aside from 2-3 scenes she is as bland and unlikable as ever so it just doesnt really work.
Also aspects of it are copied from Episode VI...

The reason why Im not giving it a trash rating despite all of this is that there are some genuinely good moments of character interaction and because it is obvious that most of these problems arent really the fault of this film but of its predecessor.
Abrams was given an impossible task with this and even though you can see he tried, it ended as one would expect.
Had they made this a two-part movie it propably would have worked much better as there would have been much more time to build the plot and the characters, but that wasnt an option aparently.
The result feels more like a rushed atempt at damage control than like a worthy conclusion to a trilogy.

The movie isnt good, but its propably about as good as it ever could have been under these screwed up circumstances.
