This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Star Wars: Episode IX is the first movie I learnt of with my senses and knowledge of Star Wars intact. Just before this movie was coming I watched all the previous movies so that I could catch up before this movie came. I wasn't born until The Phantom Menace, I didn't know anything about the other movies since I used to think Star Wars is only a cartoon, then when The Force Awakens came I had my board exams going on. And The Last Jedi was getting so much hate I thought Star Wars is just another franchise being done to death like Jurassic Park or The Matrix. So overall saying, this is the first Star Wars movie that I knew how to react on when it released. And that was definitely not a good reaction.
So first of all my problem is with how "convenient" the plot twists are. How on earth are the plot twists done so badly that there doesn't seem to be anything at stake! Rey and friends are getting sucked in sand, the animal inside is friendly. C3PO's memory gets formatted, R2D2 restores it. They don't know where to go, Rey just holds her knife and COMPARES IT WITH THE SURROUNDINGS AND FINDS HER WAY!?! And no, I'm not even getting to the dozen things that happened when she had to defeat Palpatine. Nothing matters in this movie for that matter. What happened to Rey becoming evil? What happened to the rebels on the planet where C3PO's memory was formatted? They were never brought up again.
The movie completely massacred everything that Star Wars stands for. I think the problem with all the sequel movies is that they are pandering to a much, much younger generation. Anything that could have been a little too mature was probably thrown out of the window by Mickey Mouse, because then how will the little girls from Middle East have Rey dolls if she did something mature like Luke and Anakin? Palpatine came back to life only so that Rey could smash him again and show how strong and smart she is. Ben Solo died only because he was trying to save Rey for some reason, even though he has Jedi powers so he could have just moved her out of the path. No culture, lifestyle, important character, backstory - nothing happened in here. It was just picking up on the disaster that Episode VIII was.
And the worst part in the entire movie was when Rey took, or rather should I say, STOLE the Skywalker surname. What even was that scene? The way Luke and Leia were standing in the sky, they looked like her parents. The second worst for me would be the Rey and Ben kissing scene. I don't know how to say this, but Rey has a very sister-like look to her. Why would Ben ever do that? But of course, not everything is bad about Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Palpatine. Like I said before, it has a really awesome CGI, probably the best in the entire Star Wars franchise. The cinematography was also very good. The background score added to the intensity.
And the best part - it's the last movie of the sequel trilogy. Finally this thing ended. We don't have to watch any more of Rey Palpatine anymore. I'm glad I've watched every single Star Wars movie now, so I have been able to catch up with the trend and now I can talk to anyone about Star Wars whenever the topic comes up.

Abrams returned to Episode IX, who was already in charge of Episode VII, which he succeeded in because he went to safety. This is no longer the case with Episode IX, and unfortunately he didn't quite succeed here. Overall, the story is a bit like Episode VI, but that's not quite a problem. I don't want to spoiler, but the main problem here is mainly how bad some scenes are. The characters are already dead all of a sudden, and overall it doesn't work and it's not exactly the best story. The effects are excellent, as always with Star Wars movies and music as well, and in the end it's a good movie, but it doesn't end the saga very well. After the amazing Episode VII, which copied Episode IV, and the excellent Episode VIII, which came up with something completely new, here we have Episode IX, which throws dirt on the Star Wars trilogy and destroyed everything it built over the years. Unfortunately, I still have to hold the opinion that Episode VII should never have occurred. Expand

Has a fun adventure. For me, everything to do with the Emperor is how many fans felt about Luke in Ep 8. The weakest of its trilogy. Anticlimactic and kind of flat.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A film all in all beautiful but disappointing if you look at the rest of the saga. There are enough moments of action and twists throughout the film but there are too many letes that almost fall asleep, then it's all very repetitive and most things seem already seen and others don't really have their heads. The special effects and acting are two wonderful aspects but the plot is perhaps a little disappointing. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While with a nice concept and an excellent director, the ninth installment of the Star wars franchise has a lot of plot issues, like the thing Poe and Finn wanted to say, but no one heard even at the end of the movie.
If the script was a little bit more polished, this could have been the best movie form the series Overall a decent film.

The Force Awakens was fantastic for me and The Last Jedi was interesting if a bit broken...broken because that last movie took such radical twist and turns that now, more than ever, it is painfully obvious that it left the screenwriters scratching their heads as of to what to do next and the result is this: The Rise of Skywalker, probably the messiest of the Star Wars movies. It pains me to say it because Star Wars is such a special series in the movie industry and I love it, but their is no saving this one for some of the faults it commits. The return of the Emperor is a direct response to the death of Snoke in the last movie and unfortunately their isn't enough justification, enough compelling reasoning for his return, he is just the new bad guy. The characters, all of which had interesting arcs constructed for them in the previous movies have little development because the plot moves extremely fast towards trying to build a way to get to its final fight- but forgets to leave space for the characters to grow or finish their arcs and the questions satisfyingly - we do find answers here, some of which we have been urging to find out about in the last 5 years, but because of this problem all of them lack punch. Furthermore, all logic is thrown out the window- Star Wars is a fantasy but it has always been grounded within its own fantasy, but the conveniences and over the top action and power upgrades presented here within the Force driven characters and even the human characters makes the whole thing feel unbearably cheap and hard to follow. This movie is not only a disappointment but it also cheapens the whole trilogy because it makes a disservice to everything constructed up to that point. Not all is bad...this is Star Wars after all, and their is some fun to be had, John Williams score is fantastic as always and the visuals are beautiful to look at- I wouldn't judge anyone if they find it pleasantly entertaining- but for people following the series passionately, this is a low blow. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Major Spoiler alert. This movie is colossally disappointing. Even trying to throw it a bone by judging the personal story interactions separate from the rest still only gets it to 54% give or take. The personal story lines rate a solid 88% or so. But the "wars" part...WARS is in the title people...is so unforgivably bad. (JJ Abrams has done some amazing work, yet where he is a writer seems to be when I can't stand his movies.) The "wars" part of this is recycled Force Awakens nonsense that was just pathetic copying of episode 4 but with UBER stupidity added. In episode 4 stuff was pre-caveated in mission briefs about what they were up against. Abrams got a slight pass with the absurd Starkiller Base and the shielded thing they had to strike the first time for episode 7 because it seemed like he was trying to lure in new fans and have some suspension of disbelief but still make it fun for the new folks and have on purpose throwbacks to episode 4. This time...you don't get that pass. A, you did it once before, B, no one can suspend that much disbelief. Just a few examples of the absurdities in episode 9: You magically only have 16 hours to complete this mission. Star destroyers can travel freaking light years but cannot take off from a planet without help. You can "light skip" from the hip and magically not appear inside matter. And the tie fighters can magically come along with you. You don't have long range missiles or torpedoes anymore. You can't just laser blast the horrendously stupid "nav beacon thing". It is blast shielded because he screams it during the "ground assault". You couldn't just overwhelm the shields. A single turbocannon ON a first order ship can pierce the shields and armor of the command deck...but not that nav beacon. Those same turbocannons dont do that much damage to other capital ships. Oh wait, I think they yelled shields don't work in atmosphere as well or some nonsense. Palpatine can force lightning an entire fleet. These star destroyers have the same weakness as an Independence Day ship. These star destroyers have no upgrades EXCEPT the power to destroy whole planets. Palpatine can force suck people now...but waited until these two happened to be around to do it. We can just sit on top of the Millennium Falcon while it is banking...away from a crashing first order star destroyer. Why JJ Abrams and the entire staff with hundreds if not thousands of people around let any of this garbage make it through without one person saying wait, should we not make it semi realistic? Should we read an Honor Harrington book or Starfire book and at least try? Maybe consult a Navy or Air Force person? NAH! FUDGE ALL THAT! Let's use this space combat scenario a five year old came up with or this 1980s Nintendo game plot. Oh and don't forget to occasionally yell out why it has to be this way because that will work. So disappointing. Expand

It doesn’t suck entirely but does absolutely nothing to improve the series or expand it for that matter. It felt lazy and the best way to enjoy it is to turn a blind eye and focus on the excellent music and pretty effects. I hate to say it too, Star Wars is a a universe with infinite potential and thousands of stories devoted to it. Nearly all of which are more deserving of your time than the Rise of Skywalker which is plainly a slap in the face to anyone who genuinely has affection for the series. Expand

It also felt like the general idea was, "We aren't going to make people happy with this story anymore. Let's just put it to bed. Make a clean break. That way we can use this universe to tell something new rather than continually treading down this same old storyline." Now that they are no longer slaves to the old lore, I'm actually interested to see what they will come up with. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. By any means, this is not a good movie. It can be enjoyable if you are a certain type of Star Wars fan, and you don't mind holding your breath from start to finishing and ignoring a ton of plot holes and over-the-top retconning.

Whether you liked The Last Jedi or not, it is undeniable that it at least tried to make something different. Here everything is back to a binary good versus evil, in an attempt to appease old school Star Wars fans, going as far as using a villain which makes zero sense.

The Last Jedi broke free of the "everything has to be connected" and fully accepted the "the force works in mysterious ways" mantra, and it could have had so much potential if this movie just accepted it. But no, it had to give in to TLJ haters, so it crammed way too much content into one single movie, it retconnted everything there was to retcon (Leia was a Jedi, and she was more powerful than Luke! Rey is Palpatine's granddaughter! And Leia and Luke knew about this! Luke was searching for the Sith base! Snoak was Palpatine's puppet! And of course, Palpatine is ALIVE despite falling for thousands of feet, exploding, and having the Death Star itself explode around him!).

In a hindsight, this movie clearly shows how there was zero planning behind this new trilogy. This makes what Marvel achieved with Endgame look even more amazing.

But anyway, this film was no exception for my high distaste of these newest films. Rushed and half-baked plot points, severe mishandling of beloved and classic characters (some very obvious de-aging and stunt doubling used for Carrie Fisher towards the end, rest her soul), forced dialogue/moments, and very obvious fan service are abundant in this final film on the trilogy, even more so than in the already weak two previous films before this one. It's as if JJ Abrams felt the need to try and cater to everybody by going way too overboard on the fan service and predictability, as well as trying to tie everything up in a nice little bow as much as possible, which just didn't work for me. It came across more like an overly eager fanboy directing this rather than JJ Abrams most of the time. Furthermore, it follows the plot arcs and tropes of so many previous films in the series, most notably Return of the Jedi in very predictable fashion. Granted, it's got its exciting moments, but the cons really do outweigh the pros here for me. Overall, what was already a very weak and unnecessary trilogy for me couldn't have ended in a more painfully forced, obvious, and predictable way. Most of this is really nothing we haven't seen before. Expand

It's pretty sad to see the studio trying to shore up the review balance by having either algorithms or humans generate fake positive reviews. Take a look at a sample of them. Score typically of ten points with a few nines and eights in there to throw people off the scent. But the pattern is clear. The review itself is one or two sentences and incredibly this is the single only review ever written by this "person". The profile name looks generated and the profile photo (if there is one) appears either scraped off the web or itself generated. Shame on Disney and Lucasfilm.

Original review submitted on Dec 20, 2019:
Slightly better than "The Last Jedi" which is faint praise indeed. However, this is the reckoning we get when the machine known as Disney gets control of the most beloved sci-fi movie franchise of all time. A creative abyss. Like others have noted, the filmmakers seem to literally be check-boxing every nostalgic note from the original series. Some of the visuals are stunning but the script and acting is so flat that you just want the damn thing to be over as quickly as possible. On to "The Mandalorian" and whatever the Mouse has in mind next. Mercifully, this saga has finally been shuttered.

The revelations made in this movie are nothing short of comical. Be it Rey's lineage, Leia's Jedi training or the cringe-inducing re-emergence of Palpatine, everything is just wrong and poorly executed.
I don't hold Disney responsible. Its the writers and director.
I'm genuinely saddened by how this turned out, it could have been amazing. Why not let Rey take the throne and throw the galaxy into chaos, why make the "Big Bad" the same guy from the parts I through VI? Its just lazy, its safe and its lazy.
I'm glad I finally got around to watching it but it was a massive let down in every way you can possibly imagine.

Still better then Last Jedi, which was not a Star Wars movie. This one however is a extremely hostile shape-shifting extraterrestrial organism as a result of poor writing and no trilogy concept at the beginning. Ian McDiarmid acting is flawless, Rey is doing good as well. I was very bored in every scene which was not involving the lightsaber. I liked Kylo Ren at the first movie. VIII. and now IX. made him one of the most worthless force user villains ever in SW universe. Ending was unfortunate and weak. Music not very original as well as the previous themes. Clearly just rip-offs, no creativity. Handling the continuation of the Saga is a disgrace and error which should be addressed. I will pray that Disney will learn their lesson and we will get something better from it in the future. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. All the talk of ignoring TLJ I don’t get. I for one wish they retconned more. I felt this was an ok follow up to TLJ. Hard for these movies to resonate after all the time I’ve spent with Star Wars. So many quality EU stories have been created and Disney is just not brave enough to mess with the OT enough. We will get all of the ideas fleshed out from TLJ, eventually. We will see Rey train Finn in a few years. We can even see Lucas return for a trilogy now. I’m glad the Disney Skywalker incest story is over. They did not do as good a job as say the Heir to the Empire story line. They were not brave enough with this latest trilogy. I’m still glad they tried and I’m excited for more. I did like Lando and many parts of this final movie. It did not push me away like TLJ. But I’m already trying to forget the entire thing and move on. They tried to both move on and concoct a OT SkyWalker Story, they should have done one or the other. We would always come back for more. We didn’t need force-fed new characters. This is just one version of many, keep hope, there will be hits and misses. But my Luke and Leia stories will always live in the EU. My recommendation is to go read Zahns first trilogy and Jedi Academy books to really see a good Star Wars story. But for this movie go and make some noise and make the audience your show and enjoy yourself! This movie has more good then bad, but I chose to hold on to other versions of Luke’s story. Go and cheer, go high five strangers, clap, cheer, and feel free to debate and chastise the story too. We are all a part of this story, we are all related when it comes to Star Wars, like it or not. Very awkward pacing, as plot is just characters going from one place to another, very brief visits and even new and old characters and planets get, at most, five minutes screentime. Of course Rey is vindicated and becomes potentially the most powerful Jedi that ever lived. Some scenes are blatant rip-off (sorry, homages) of OT scenes. This feels like when you are trying to clean some mess in your report or homework, and end up tearing the sheet of paper, then putting it back together with scotch tape. It will get you a pass, but not very far in life.

Star Wars is done for as a premium series, it can't be saved by any number of new movies or TV shows, because Disney destroyed what made Star Wars special in the first place. It broke the concept of the Force, making everybody able to instantly become a Jedi Master with no training, something that goes against the very principles of life (you can't become good at something if you don't train a lot and don't have the talent). This trilogy of awful and pseudo "progressive" sequels should never have existed. If you think the prequels were bad just because of Jar-Jar Binks or Anakin Skywalker, the Disney sequels are even worse.

Episode IX comes after the disastrous (and dreadful) Episode VIII, so the producers and writers had to backpedal on everything that enraged fans and play it safe. Only they didn't have enough time to make a good script, so it's just a straight and mindless rush to the finale with no care or respect for the past.

Episode IX is actually a better movie than I expected, with all the mediocre reviews going around. It's better only because it merely relies on the nostalgia factor and fan service. Otherwise, it's just a rehash of everything we've already seen in past movies (including the dreaded Disney sequels).

The actual plot is some pile of horrible BS, absurd moments of stupidity, and some missed opportunities. I mean, there are a few pretty good ideas thrown around here and there (like the Rey-Kylo connection and dynamic), but they are never developed correctly, and are lost amidst the chaos and the cringe. There is simply too much stuff crammed in this movie, confusing even people like me who are used to crammed plots. It'd have been better to split this movie into 2 parts, delete the abomination of The Last Jedi from the face of the Earth while pretending it never existed (like the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special from 1978), and make 2 episodes of it.

One criticism I read in most professional reviews is about the "mistake of retconning Rey's parentage". It's actually the other way around. This retconning is the righting of an original huge mistake, and it's a pretty well done one, too, considering all that's happening in the movie.

The movie even somehow manages to end somewhat satisfyingly, despite all the chaos and cringe going on. At least I didn't leave cinema vomiting like when I watched the horrible Episode VIII: The Last Jedi. Only by watching the prequels/originals 3 times each was I able to get back to health in the last 2 years.

Overall, the Star Wars trilogy of sequels is a total artistic failure, no matter how many billions of dollars Disney make off them. Episode 1 had the memorable pod racing scene and the epic lightsaber battle of Qui Gonn Jin, Obi Wan Kenobi and Darth Maul. Episode 2 had the invasion of the clones. Episode 3 had the Anakin/Obi Wan lightsaber duel. The original films are unforgettable. What will people remember from the Disney sequels? Other than Kylo Ren stabbing Han Solo, or Kylo's peculiar lightsaber, nothing.

It's 5/10 purely because of fan service and nostalgia. Objectively it should have been 3/10, but I'm just human. Seeing Leia and all the beloved characters returning for one final showdown made me soften.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Disappointment. The entire trilogy was a disappointment for me. And the IX episode is the worst for me of all the Star Wars films. The new trilogy, except for the VIII episode, is nothing new.

I liked it: the game of actors, everything related to sound, visual.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pretty weak movie, don't love it, don't hate it. As a huge Star Wars fan I hoped IX won't ignore VIII too much, but I guess the pressure from the "fandom" was too much. Still astonishing, how Disney could make a trilogy without a complete vision. But IX is so non-creative, making the movie feel empty. Planetdestroyer tech on stardestroyes. Seriously, who greenlit this? We had 2 Deathstars, a Starkiller Base, this ramp canon in VIII and now this. Where are your creative minds Hollywood?

I had one emotional moment, when Chewie roars after Leia's death. Emotionally I was more invested TLJ (R2+Luke, Luke+Yoda, Luke+Leia, Reylo). I would have said ok, we **** up, let's do 2 more movies, build on VII and VIII. Something coherent. This whole trilogy now feels very odd. Still, not the end of the world, but the trilogy could have had some more heart and respect for it's legacy.

The rest tries to tell some story, but fails to explain far too many "why's" and "how's" - things simply happen because they happen. Unfortunately it feels like the screenplay was a product of a brainstorm - a bunch of independent ideas were generated, and only then someone was trying to tie them together - with mixed results though. Star Wars universe was never paying much attention to reality and physics, it didn't really bother me, as it was mostly consistent. This time you need add a complete disregard to logic as well, and this is a step too far for me :-(. Expand

It is a very messy conclusion to the franchise. There is a lot to dislike in this movie. Negatives:
- Palpatine coming back just kinda happens? Not really explained
- The story is very messy, rushed and all over the place
- The lightsaber fights suck
- Luke, Lando,Rose and the Knights of Ren are wasted as characters
- Introducing too many new characters - An absolute insult to The Last Jedi and not a proper sequel to it
- The twist sucks

There are a fair amount of good in the film though
+ Leia is handled very well
+ Phenomenal CGI
+ The real practical stuff are amazing
+ Some nice surprises
+ The ending at least feels conclusive
+ Great action near the end
+ Richard E Grant is amazing

It's not great and it does make you wonder what Star Wars Sequel trilogy could've been but at least its over now

I loved the visualsI finally got around to seeing this and reading the reviews prior to going to the theater I thought I was in for something absolutely horrible and to be honest, I didn't think it was as bad as everyone makes it out to be. I loved the visuals like the Star Destroyers lined up perfectly in a grid like pattern w/ lightning crashing down around them was so damn awesome I nerdgasmed out on it, sound effects were great as always in the SW series, seeing different characters, and I really enjoyed having C-3PO as more of a main character w/ more and actual lines, some of which were pretty funny I thought. BUT, there are definitely some things that are not good about this movie. I found the writing to be subpar, especially certain one liners and I couldn't help to think that even I could write better dialogue. There were two or so moments that never panned out to anything. There some pretty ridiculous force moments, nothing I can go into w/out spoiling, but way too over the top that just cheapens the movie. The worst part of the movie though was the super predictable story, again, can't go into detail but, super predictable. Finally w/ all that said, I enjoyed the movie overall. I've seen plenty of truly 1 star movies and this definitely was not one. At the same time it's not anywhere close to the quality of SW we know. Overall, I'd say it's ok, pretty good, and an enjoyable enough movie I'd recommend at least renting it. Expand

(Swears hysterically in Japanese)

Well, everything, it was clearly the last straw, it did not cause such a burning sensation as episode 8, but it causes a feeling of shame, the level of which is not inferior to burning from episode 8.
The plot, as it were, is, but it's just an ice hole in the fishless.
Everyone can wave their hands at the characters, although I personally did it on the 8th episode. On the screen, there is such a bacchanalia of absurdity and idiocy that from all this you start to giggle, and then more and more, as if your dentist got the balloons and gave Nitric Oxide. And I was not the only one there, in the hall some were also in shock.
With the technical part this time, too, everything is not all right, “Avengers: Final” this year is a clear leader and all the forces were cast on them.
Regarding the location, everything is rotten again, and again this F***** desert ...
John Williams made his most boring and sterile soundtrack, apart from the film he does not go at all.
Well, this is a ban. Oh ... That is 5/10 (146).

Star Wars: I Gotta A Ménage à Trois Feeling About This - Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker or SW:TROS or just TROS - is not a bad film.
Not as good nor will any be as good as the first three Star Wars films released
beginning in 1977 and certainly nowhere near as bad as the media is making it
out to be.(sidenote) About 95% of folk who claim to be 'film critics' in the 21st
century suffer from an affliction known as 'heaDUPtheIRAss', which I think is a
Dutch term that means they have no idea what they are talking about. Anyway,
with Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker you still experience the 'roll your eyes'
moments, the story suffers from 'convenience' and the logistics of the characters
never make sense - this transcends every one of the trilogies and is almost
expected from any Star Wars film. The VFX in Rise was meh....other Star Wars
productions have produced better. I was hugely disappointed in Oscar Isaac, an
Oscar caliber performer who pretty much dialed in his delivery. The one whose
star shone bright, who after The Force Awakens stated she was not a Star Wars fan,
Daisy Ridley blew the doors off everyone - this version of the Rey character is
what Star Wars films should have contained from the beginning. It was sad to
see the Kylo Ren character be transformed into what Rise delivered, which is no
fault to Adam Driver, because..... J.J. Abrams should have never been given the
the latest Star Wars trilogy mantle in the first place. J.J. Abrams has a bit
of originality, but there is way too much of his mentor's vision in the majority
of his work. Of course, Rian Johnson took a HUGE dump on The Last Jedi, so
bringing Abrams back for the save on Rise was a worthy attempt, nut in no way
could make up for the damage done by Johnson. Also, J.J. loves introducing new
audiences to existing sagas by taking old storylines and elements and reconditioning
them as new - these are as obvious as a $3.00 bill and... Just Stop It, J.J..
Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker was an OK film of a troubled trilogy that should
never have begun without a team of writers, producers and directors who bled
Star Wars from their veins and had the complete vision of the complete Star Wars
saga documented and storyboarded before casting.

The Original Trilogy is almost perfect and the Prequels are hilariously bad but the Sequel Trilogy has been pretty mediocre so far. So how does this final film wrap up the ENTIRE Skywalker Saga? Meh, very messy and mostly disappointing. If you like fan service or huge battles then you will probably love this but I was looking for a good story with good characters and the film mostly doesn’t deliver on that level. The only new character I liked that has been consistently good throughout the entire trilogy is Kylo Ren. He is the only new character to go through an actual arc throughout the trilogy about who he is while the others haven’t really gone through one. Finn had one in the first film but that was completely abandoned by this film. Rey and Poe haven’t gone through any arc but I like Poe as a character more than Rey. The Original Trilogy characters are fine. They already completed their arcs and are here to help these new characters but I have a problem with one of them, Palpatine. Although I enjoyed his presence and Ian McDiarmid did a great job as usual, he really doesn’t serve any purpose to the story other than to be there. It feels like a last minute decision to throw him into the film and I felt that this wasn’t their original goal. Leia’s presence was awkward in a few places but I can’t fault the film for that because they did the best they could out of a bad situation. The new characters for this film only weren’t that good either. They were introduced, used for the characters to get out of a situation or get into something and then were abandoned until the end. They really weren’t fleshed out a lot and felt useless. The first hour of the film was incredibly clumsy, messy, and at some points confusing. The film slowly got better as time went along but it didn’t get that much better. The first hour is our group of heros hopping from planet to planet and delivering exposition. That’s it. The editing was really choppy and quick along with the transitions. Some scenes would switch to another character for a minute or less and then hop back to our core three characters. It felt awkward and very rushed which completely destroyed the pacing for the rest of the film because the rest of the film has much slower pacing. The film tries to fit a LOT of information into its 2 and a half hour runtime where it feels like the film should have been 3 and a half or 4 hours to fit all this information. The film introduced a new force power that was stupid to me. It felt like the writers wrote themselves into a corner and used this new force ability as a way to get out. The final climactic battle was kinda cool but it wasn’t that impressive to me. In fact, most of the action wasn’t that special compared to some of the other action scenes in the other films. The battle between Rey and Kylo over the ocean was kinda cool but most of the other action scenes felt uninspired. The acting for the most part was pretty great. Adam Driver did a great job and so did the Original Trilogy characters. Although I wasn’t a big fan of their characters, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and Oscar Issac did a pretty good job. As always, the music by John Williams is fantastic. This man can never screw up Star Wars music. The visuals are pretty great also. The planets looked great and so did the ships and action sequences. Some of the alien creatures were practical which I felt was a really nice touch. I really enjoyed and appreciated some of the fan service moments. I won’t spoil any of them for you but I had a smile on my face when those moments happened. Overall, The Rise of Skywalker is a disappointing ending to the Skywalker Saga with choppy editing, transitions, uninspired action, and rushed story but retains its good acting, visuals, and music with some good fan service moments to leave viewers happy. Objectively speaking, as a movie, it's actually fine. Not terrible, not great, just fine. The technical aspects are great once again: The VFX, the sound design, the production design, John William's final Star Wars score, all that it's great. The performances are fine...I mean, with a dull script the actors didn't have much to work with. The script is full of cheesy lines and I know that Star Wars has always had its fair share of cheesy or corny lines but some of the dialogue here comes close to cringeworthy. It also has a lot of plot conviniences. The "force" is now portrayed as a "Mary Sue" because it could do anything, apparently. Some twists were dumb and even unnecessary. Many characters besides Rey and Kylo Ren have literally nothing to do the whole movie. New characters like the Richard E. Grant character don't even have any character, they are just there. Lando barely does anything in the movie. His inclusion felt more like cheap fanservice instead of having a real purpose and returning characters like Palpatine are now boring! Speaking about fanservice...Oh my God...This should've been called "Fan service: The Movie". Like I said, the twists were dumb and felt straight out of a bad fanfic and also, like I said, the returning characters are boring! This whole movie is a demonstration of Disney trying not to piss off anybody. They played it sooooooo safe. They no longer want to try anything new, they are just trying to please the most fans as possible, and, judging by the User Score, they failed, because there are still fans ranting about this movie.

This trilogy is a mess, because it's not consistent. I mean, the prequels, as much as I hate them and dislike them AS MOVIES, they are consistent...Consistently bad. This trilogy...Oh my God: We got the first one in which fans were angry because it was a ripoff of A New Hope, they wanted something new. Disney tries to make something new with The Last Jedi and everyone hated it because "They ruined Star Wars". So now they made this one because no one liked the new direction and fans now hate it because "it's too late".

Like I said, as much as I don't like the prequels and still think they are inferior to any other movie in the franchise, at least they can get so bad they are entertaining...But this...This is bad too...But its bad elements are not entertaining at all...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a lifetime Star Wars fan, I didn't hate this movie, just disappointed. Plenty of good ideas brought to the table that just felt rushed. Not the worst, and not the best. The movie seems to cram 2 movies worth of story into 1 movie. A lot of things where happening and there was not explanation to any of it. People where just showing up places, events where happening back to back to back. There was no breathing room in this movie. It feels as if JJ Abrams had plans for 7-9 and when he didn't get to do 8, he crammed 8 with 9 in the same movie. Splitting this movie into 2 would have made it much better. It's unfortunate that JJ just didn't get the entire trilogy, would have made for a better passed and coherent trilogy. On to the story, spoilers obviously. The return of palpetine felt unnatural, like if someone killed of the big bad guy in the last film *cough* *cough*. No explanation to it, just here he is barely alive controlling everything from the shadows. It felt like it kind of interrupted Anikins redemption and fulfilling the prophesy as the chosen one. This could have been mended if Ben was the one to kill the emperor, but I did still appreciate his redemption. Although it would have been nice to see Ben and Rey alive at the end.
The summarize, a very rushed movie with a lot of missed potential. Not the worst Star Wars movie, but definitely not the best.

I think this movie is the worst of all 9 episodes. Disney tries to play on old characters but it doesn't work. Hope they stop here and won't ruin this fantastic universe even more.

Not to mention, Rey, the ultimate Mary-sue, who’s only excuse for being as powerful as she is, is the fact that she is a Palpatine. Frankly, I can’t think of anything good about this movie other than the special effects and visuals. The acting is at best mediocre. I don’t blame J.J Abrams, he did the best he could with what he had to work with after the abysmal piece of **** that is Last Jedi. Oh wait... yes I can, there is one good thing about this waste of production. The fact that Rose, one of the useless, most meaningless characters in the entirety of Star Wars, more meaningless and worthless than even Jar Jar Binks, was REMOVED FROM THE MOVIE! Damn, at least Jar Jar served an actual purpose had an actual role and was pivotal to the plot of the prequels. Defending Naboo, and helping push Palpatine’s goal of consolidating the Senate and eventually naming himself Emperor. I’m actually glad true Star Wars fans attacked her character’s actress the way they did, she had no place in the Star Wars universe, literally **** her. Point being, I decided instead despite how awful this movie is, to give it a 5 out of 10 just for the sheer fact that of all the despicable things about this movie one good thing happened, and that was effectively writing Rose out of the movie by giving her the meaningless role her worthless character deserves. It’s action packed, and got me emotional 2 times but that was it. What happened to R2-D2 in the first half instead we got some new droid. What happened to the knights of Ren? Why didn’t the command ship go to a higher altitude when they were trying to blow it up on horses? Sooo many questions. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It is a shame.
In the prequels the ‘bad guy’, Anakin, had a good reason to be turned to the dark side, you could even sympathize with his situation. But this kid, kylo ren, just reflects the typical teenager who wants to be bad without any reason and disobey his parents. Just ridiculous.

The return of the emperor could somehow be explained, as he were a Darth Plagueis apprentice , who really had a deep knowledge about the dark side, and maybe the emperor did get made a clone of him.
This would be surprising, but not ‘non canon’.

HOWEVER, they reflected the emperor as a pathetic old man who can be defeated by a girl who didn’t get proper training. I really thought that maybe this film would be good, because I saw that there were more siths in the temple, and maybe the rule of two could disappear. But all that got blasted by a girl overpowered.

This film was better than the 8th, but I really miss George Lucas .

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The premise of the movie with Palpatine being back makes little sense and is not set up properly, or at all really... There is multiple such potholes thst reduce the enjoyment quite a bit. Multiple deus ex machina moments as well as fanservice at every possible second just make this daunting. It was too on the nose and lacked ambition because of it.
Now this movie ist far from perfect, but it was enjoyable at times. The conclusion is about as good as it could have been after the disaster thst was TLJ. The humor in this was also quite good and most jokes landed. Overall the movie was rushed, course corrected heavy handedly and relied solely on nostalgia to get people back on board, forgetting a good story in the process.

The character Rey had first conquered me for his personality. In 2017 came Star Wars: The Last Jedi which divided the public and the critics. I had loved the ideas that the second movie brought me about the strength and deepening of the character Luke Skywalker. It made me vibrate in certain scenes and thrill in others. This ninth and final chapter brought the image of an unnecessary apology. They were so concerned about redeeming themselves with the public and the critics that they decided to throw away the topics presented in the second film and explain them again in a very simple and unstructured way. I didn't feel the emotion I think I should have felt. I couldn't feel like things the movie wanted me to feel. The epic feeling of an ending. It is sad to know that they decided to go back on some ideas instead of moving on and knowing how to develop them. I found this last chapter quite average and anticlimatic. Disappointing. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Spoilers ahead, be warned. I'll quickly bullet point the things I liked and disliked and then provide a summary conclusion.
LIKED (in no particular order):
- Ian McDiarmid's performance as Emperor Palpatine, fantastic as always.
- How Leia was addressed in this film.
- General Pryde. This is how the First Order leadership should be, not like Hux who comes across as slapstick.
- Babu Frik (just really liked the character)
- Utilisation of C3PO and how he was written seems consistent with the C3PO of old.
- Chewie getting a medal (cheesy but fitting)
- Light saber duel on the remnants of the Death Star II
- How RoS attempted to fix some of the issues with the last movie, although the downside of this is that it broke the immersion.
- Rey's character given a bit more depth in this movie and finally faced some meaningful challenges.
- The Rey and Kylo dynamic was solid in this movie and both Daisy and Adam both gave great performances.
DISLIKED (in no particular order):
- Over use of fan service. Fan service should be used sparingly and the core focus should be on organically moving forward the story.
- Movie pace too scattered and frantic and not enough breathing space.
- Too many McGuffins, the whole movie felt like a giant scavenger hunt. The McGuffins also seemed to be simple plug'n'play devices that you just connect to your space usb-c and away you go. Where is the lore and history?.. these are supposed to be Sith artifacts.
- The slapstick humor (very immersion breaking). By all means have some humor, but don't make it slapstick.
- Palpatine telegraphing to the galaxy by threatening revenge. Palps is a master of patience and deception, playing his cards too early is not his modus operandi!
- Palpatine getting beaten so easily. This guy has amassed a huge knowledge of the dark side and would have anticipated how his own force lightening may have been used against him.
- Luke's x-wing being fully operational when given to Rey. You can tell it was damaged from 'The Last Jedi'.. how is it immediately useable?
- The horses on the Star Destroyer just seemed very out of place - Lack of perceived threat level by the First Order or Final Order, this is generally because they either yell a lot or are complete buffoons. The Empire were measured, cold, clinical, and calculated. - Referencing the plot holes from the previous movie felt hugely immersion breaking.
- Having huge chunks of the Death Star II still intact on Kef Bir, did JJ and Chris Terrio not see ROTJ and the huge explosion at the end?
- Light speed skipping?! Han takes calculated risks, while Poe takes careless risks.
- They fly now, they fly now, they fly now. Do these people live in the Star Wars universe?
- Story of this movie and the trilogy is mostly a re-skinned tired re-tread of the OT, - Finn under utilised. Finn had potentially one of the better story arcs of the trilogy but this wasn't really capitalised on.

SUMMARY:
Having now seen the entire Sequel Trilogy I am left thinking what was the point of all this?! This movie and for that matter the whole sequel trilogy represent a failure of planning, imagination, and story telling. I still believe that Disney has the potential to create a movie of the same calibre as the OT, but they need to stop treating Star Wars as the cinema version of fast food.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Non-spoiler Review

There's things to like and things to not like about this movie. Overall, I'd say this movie was not good, but I don't blame Abrams. This movie really should have been broken up into two movies. You can tell that there was at least 1-2 hours of footage that was cut from the film because some scenes don't make any sense or have any context. The visuals and score are great, but the plot just feels completely disjointed and rushed. This was especially evident when the action was happening and I felt nothing. No excitement or thrill. They "yadda yadda'd" over some really important details.

The lightsaber battles kinda fell flat for me as well. There was one fight, in particular (won't spoil it), that felt completely choreographed. In movies, action sequences are supposed to feel organic and natural, but this particular lightsaber battle was slow bland. They kept going through the same two motions until the battle was over. It was very unsatisfying. Most of the new characters introduced in this film just felt out of place in the plot. It's like they were shoehorned into the movie just for the sake of it. However, there was one new character that I did enjoy for his comedic relief.

Overall, trying to erase TLJ is not any easy task. I felt Abrams had the deck stacked against him with trying to rewrite characters after TLJ, as well as having to deal with Leia's plot after the death of Carrie Fisher. Unfortunately, the movie results in a mess of plotholes and WTF moments that really don't pay off. I will say the one character they got right was Kylo Ren. He was probably the most developed character in the new trilogy. Other than that, I walked out of the theater feeling very disappointed. Maybe if JJ had directed all 3 movies, this trilogy would've been much better. But, as it stands, this movie gets a 5 out of 10 from me. Not a good movie, but also not the worst movie.

SPOILER SECTION

Things I didn't like:

They failed to explain HOW Palpatine came back. We were just supposed to accept the first sentence in the screen crawl.

Rey is a god. There's nothing she can't do, and that makes her character boring. I don't care that she is a woman, the reason a lot of people don't like her is because she really has no struggle arc. She can do anything with little effort. She can now heal using the force (where did she learn how to do that? Leia?). In one scene, she is able to force pull an entire transport ship! This movie (and really the whole trilogy) completely undermined Anakin's saga. Why was Palpatine alive? It's like Vader died for nothing. Speaking of Palpatine, I hated how he was able to lay lowkey for all of these years but somehow amassed an army of 10,000 star destroyer ships. And how was he able to lift these ships in the air?? Then, in the last battle, he is able to shoot force lightning in the air. Not only is he able to control the lightning to hit only the resistance ships, but the lightning isn't actually destroying any ships. It's basically a glorified EMP that jams their signal and causes then to lose power. Miraculously, even though they were in the atmosphere, none of the resistance ship fell to the ground and got destroyed when they lost power.

I also didn't like how Palpatine kept using his force lightning against Rey when she was clearly deflecting it back at him. Why didn't he just stop using it?

The Chewie "death" scene was a terrible "gotcha" moment. We are to believe he died when Rey blew up the ship, but I didn't buy it for once second. And sure enough, Chewie was alive because he was actually on a second transport ship (which I don't remember seeing). There's a scene where the crew is taking out stormtroopers with blasters. They are "killing" fully armored stormtroopers with one blast. However, shortly after, Poe gets shot by a stormtrooper. With no armor, Poe is only knocked down momentarily before getting back up.

Don't get me started on the Knights of Ren. They were nothing more than a waste of potential. Hux being the mole just didn't land with me. And the way it was revealed was too goofy.

Rey kissing Kylo felt EXTREMELY out of place. I was just looking at the screen trying to figure out where that came from. I get that they had a force link, but I didn't think that Rey was actually falling in love with a guy that murdered hundreds of resistance soldier, killed his dad, tried to kill his uncle and attempted to kill his mother. There were way too many Macguffins, even for a Star Wars movie.

Things I liked:

Baboo Frik (spelling?) was the only new character I liked. The scene with Han and Ben Solo was great. Probably the best scene in the movie for me.

Chewie's emotional screams after Leia died.

Finn back to be force-sensitive after completely being disregarded in TLJ.

All of the past jedi calling out to Rey, even though it would've been better if they were force ghosts.

It lacks continuity with the other two films and every other Star Wars film at that. If you’re a a casual Star Wars fan who just wants to see action with no explanation needed, this is for you. But if you’re a hardcore fan and want cohesion in your stories, you’re going to hate it. The Last Jedi ruined the chance to create a compelling movie after that and JJ Abrams did his best to try to answer all the questions he set up in The Force Awakens. I blame Disney for not sticking with the same director. It seems like Rian Johnson was having a ego contest and was trying to subvert expectations by trying to outdo Abrams rather than adding on to what he was trying to create, which kind of ruined the story of this trilogy. I love Star Wars, but I’m at the point where I’ve kind of out grown it and have to understand it’s for kids. Kids aren’t going to question the lore of any story. Most kids are going to accept it how it is. They’ll just like it because it’s a cool world and people are fighting. But Disney took the nerdy part of Star Wars out and made it into a bad Marvel film. So I’m not interested in any Star Wars trilogy anymore, because I would have to dumb myself down to watch these movies and accept them for how they are instead of being intrigued like I was with their other six films that had continuity. But it was ok, I wouldn’t watch it again. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie itself, I would say, could be best described as an extremely simple film. When you boil it down, the story is simple: find a Sith Wayfinder to get to the Emperor, who wants to destroy the galaxy. I was looking for more, but I could roll with that concept. But what brings the movie down is the intense amount of boring extra quests they have to do to get to the Sith Wayfinder. They have to get a knife, and then someone to read the inscriptions on the knife, then they have to cross the water. The whole movie seems to avoid interacting with the Emperor as a threat, to focus on all of our new characters, and the Emperor ends up just feeling like a goal to get to, rather, than a person who actually impacted any of the heroes journey to get to him, and hurt anybody. There are several things I could say that are more specific flaws I had with it, but I won't elaborate.

The action is good in parts, the first half of the Kylo Ren x Rey fight is well choreographed and fast enough to keep my whittling attention span satisfied, and I enjoy the aesthetics of Exogol, with the lighting, however I do with that there was more action in this area. I can't really count the final battle with Palpatine as action, which could have been interesting, being more of a battle of perseverance than of power, but it was bogged down by it being intensely slow and drawing our attention away from it to focus on an epic space battle. Overall,
Visuals: Great
Story: Bad
Character: Depends, either boring, good, or ruined by a bad script.
Ending: Garbage
Final Score: You can see it now, but yeah, a 5/10.

There were too many distractions in the film that took the viewer out of the movie rather than pulling them into the movie. How is that Leia? Are they using CGI or archival footage or a combination? Wait, is that Charlie from Lost? Is he still running around a tropical jungle? I wonder if they filmed that scene in the same location as Lost? I bet this guy is Lando.. Wow that was a fast scene! It's almost like they're stuffing the film with every previous character (alive and dead) but they only appear on-screen long enough to say "Remember me!?" and disappear. What's the point? And this failure makes it much easier to notice the film's other shortcomings.

There is a lack of engagement. It's hard to care for these pencil-thin characters. There is no suspense. You just find yourself just waiting for it to end. Not to mention massive gaps in logic, and characters making decisions solely to serve the mechanics of what happens next.. but it's not what the character would actually do. The viewer walks away not believing in it. It didn't happen. It didn't end that way. Very reminiscent of Lost in this regard. Maybe the appearance of Charlie was foreshadowing after all.

I know none of these negative reviews are going to keep Star Wars fans from seeing this movie. But when you finally do watch it, just know that you are not alone, that you are not crazy, and that J.J. Abrams has screwed us once again.
