Structured around weak and ludicrous plot devices, and in too many ways using a xeroxed template from "Return of the Jedi", itself a very flawed film. I'm absolutely certain that when a nine-film narrative arc was originally envisaged all those decades ago, nobody was expecting episodes 7,8,9 would end up being done as simple rehashes of the immediately prior eps of 4,5,6. Excruciating. Thank God it's over. Expand

I have a lot of love for Star Wars. I read the comics. I have a nursery that's Star Wars themed. I've been defending this new trilogy for years. But, this movie has provided a lot of disappointment that I am having trouble reconciling.

The music is amazing, and the visuals are nice, but when you are dealing with a billion dollar corporation like Disney, this is not praise worth mentioning. Story-wise, the movie is a mess. There are multiple points that had the audience at my showing verbally saying "what?" from start to finish. Expand

Characters often die and come back, or if something is lost it is easily is found. There is literally no punch to any of the “shocking deaths” This movie is a patch job at best. It doesn’t suck entirely but does absolutely nothing to improve the series or expand it for that matter. It felt lazy and the best way to enjoy it is to turn a blind eye and focus on the excellent music and pretty effects. I hate to say it too, Star Wars is a a universe with infinite potential and thousands of stories devoted to it. Nearly all of which are more deserving of your time than the Rise of Skywalker which is plainly a slap in the face to anyone who genuinely has affection for the series. Expand

It is a very messy conclusion to the franchise. There is a lot to dislike in this movie. Negatives:
- Palpatine coming back just kinda happens? Not really explained
- The story is very messy, rushed and all over the place
- The lightsaber fights suck
- Luke, Lando,Rose and the Knights of Ren are wasted as characters
- Introducing too many new characters - An absolute insult to The Last Jedi and not a proper sequel to it
- The twist sucks

There are a fair amount of good in the film though
+ Leia is handled very well
+ Phenomenal CGI
+ The real practical stuff are amazing
+ Some nice surprises
+ The ending at least feels conclusive
+ Great action near the end
+ Richard E Grant is amazing

It's not great and it does make you wonder what Star Wars Sequel trilogy could've been but at least its over now

It is clear from the first 5 minutes of this film that it is going to be a mess.

There is basically no exposition in the film, and I think that is possibly its biggest failing creatively of all its many failings. What exposition there is is flat out told to you instead of revealed. That is a really bad way to start a movie, and it suffers for it.

The exposition which is explained to you at the start throws in about ten major shifts in the plot within those first five minutes which would be more properly suited for a climax in and of themselves, changing all the stakes and almost completely disconnecting this film from the previous two entries in the trilogy right from the outset. This was not a good creative decision by JJ Abrams, and the film doesn't really recover from that unforced error until about halfway through.

The pacing of the film was designed for a hummingbird, with no time to even emotionally respond or absorb what transpires on the screen before we are off to the next bit of convoluted madness. There should have been half as much plot but twice as much time spent with the remaining half and half as many characters but twice as much time spent with the remaining characters. Less is more and show don't tell these are fundamentals of movie-making J.J. Abrams should know at this point in his career.

The film is technically sound in a lot of ways. The action is itself very pretty, but without character development there are no stakes. Why should you care what happens? Whether people almost get shot or do get shot or blown up, why should you care if you aren't invested in those people because you know them?

The acting isn't that bad, but there was very little acting demanded given the lack of narrative and character development.

This is the worst Star Wars movie that has ever been made, in my opinion. It is worse than Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. At least that movie had a cognizable narrative, even though it was a terrible and boring narrative. The acting is better in this movie than some of the characters in that movie, but that is the only thing that is better. This movie was bad in a way that makes the previous movies worse. I wish I had not seen it.

Both of the previous to entries in this trilogy have been in my opinion, extremely underwhelming, both for different reasons. The force awakens was although in itself a decent film, painfully unoriginal and extremely predictable, but had a good script with an alright plot and a good supporting cast. The last Jedi had massive sections that were just plain boring and had a terrible script, but at the same time was far less predictable and had an extremely underrated performance from Mark Hamil. Episode 9 however, instead of learning from the mistakes of its predecessors makes them all again without anything really to redeem it. The dialogue was cheesy and pretty awful at some points and towards the end the plot really dragged. The final showdown between the resistance and the first order was practically just a massive cringe fest, and none of the new characters are given enough time to be invested in. The film wasn’t all bad though, as it saw the return of Ian McDiarmid as palpatine, who is once again phenomenal. Other characters, mainly Kylo Ren are given a chance to fully develop and have satisfying closure in the finale. I think it’s also worth mentioning that the sith are really made out to be quite sinister in this film, which I personally loved. I also couldn’t help but notice a much smaller focus on the lightsaber fights. Perhaps it’s because of how badly choreographed the throne room fight in the last Jedi was, but I think the change of pace worked well and when there was the occasional dual it felt more slick. I guess it is worth talking about the cinematography, even though it’s pretty much the same every year it is once again excellent. I think an issue that both me and many fans are having is that it renders the struggles of characters like Luke and Anakin useless. What I mean by this is that, Anakin was destined to destroy the sith and end the tyranny of the emperor, yet here he stands alive and well, ready for Rey to fulfill someone else’s prophecy. Not only does it break the lore but it is extremely contrived and just generally bad writing.
In conclusion, the rise of skywalker is an underwhelming installment in an epically mediocre trilogy. It does have a few redeeming qualities and is altogether an enjoyable experience, but it’s not enough to make up for all of its flaws. This is now in my opinion the worst Star Wars film.

Fast forward to the release ofLike many, Star Wars has played a vital role in my pop-culture upbringing. From the vast and imaginative world, to the characters and their adventures - George Lucas created something unique and captivating. Fast forward to the release of Rise of Skywalker - an ambitious film trying to please fans while also attempting to "fix" the missteps from its previous installment, The Last Jedi.

Putting plot, editing and dialogue aside - Rise of Skywalker has exciting action sequences, stunning visuals and interesting new characters, such as Babu Frik! Love that little guy. Unfortunately all this unravels with its jump-cut editing, slew of MacGuffins, and an uninspired plot rendering Anakin's trial(s) and tribulations invalid and pointless.

With Star Wars having influenced so many individuals, it's a shame to see 42 years of Skywalker history amount to this. An uninspired ending, claiming to be different and monumental, when in actuality it's forgettable and abysmal.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I sat down with high expectations, because a movie of this caliber deserves that. Even after the previous 2 catastrophes.

Disney. Can you please for the love of God, give a rest to featured Star Wars movies and maybe just focus on TV shows around the Star Wars universe? This was an absolute embarrassment. I'm not sure what the intention was with the latest installment to be honest. Pleasing old fans? Answering unanswered questions from the previous 2 movies and filling in plot holes? Both failed.

Terrible, lazy writing, unoriginal. Shame on the writing staff.

I still couldn't connect or care for any of the characters. They had 3 movies to do that, but failed. So many unnecessary characters were brought back for no reason other than the writing staff had simply no idea what to do with the plot. PLEASE! LEAVE THE OLD TRILOGY ALONE! Leave those characters alone once and for all!

Return of Darth Sidious? How? Why? Oh yeah, you don't get an answer. Darth Sidious is one of the strongest, if not the strongest Sith Lords of all time, yet here is some random girl (who is his granddaughter btw for the "wooow" effect that also fails), who had minimal training and defeats him and slicing through the Emperor's Royal Guard with his now best friend Kylo Ren, like hot knife through butter?! Are you kidding me?! Also the kiss. WHY?!

Oh, by the way, some of the characters were just simply killed off if there was no need for them or if they writing stuff clearly didn't know what to do with them.

Jedi can also bring back others to life? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!!!

Again. Very unoriginal, lazy writing. Shame on you Disney and the production staff!

I get that JJ Abrams tried to undo the damage that was done in the Last Jedi, but the movie is rather disappointing to me overall.

The Force Awakens was fantastic for me and The Last Jedi was interesting if a bit broken...broken because that last movie took such radical twist and turns that now, more than ever, it is painfully obvious that it left the screenwriters scratching their heads as of to what to do next and the result is this: The Rise of Skywalker, probably the messiest of the Star Wars movies. It pains me to say it because Star Wars is such a special series in the movie industry and I love it, but their is no saving this one for some of the faults it commits. The return of the Emperor is a direct response to the death of Snoke in the last movie and unfortunately their isn't enough justification, enough compelling reasoning for his return, he is just the new bad guy. The characters, all of which had interesting arcs constructed for them in the previous movies have little development because the plot moves extremely fast towards trying to build a way to get to its final fight- but forgets to leave space for the characters to grow or finish their arcs and the questions satisfyingly - we do find answers here, some of which we have been urging to find out about in the last 5 years, but because of this problem all of them lack punch. Furthermore, all logic is thrown out the window- Star Wars is a fantasy but it has always been grounded within its own fantasy, but the conveniences and over the top action and power upgrades presented here within the Force driven characters and even the human characters makes the whole thing feel unbearably cheap and hard to follow. This movie is not only a disappointment but it also cheapens the whole trilogy because it makes a disservice to everything constructed up to that point. Not all is bad...this is Star Wars after all, and their is some fun to be had, John Williams score is fantastic as always and the visuals are beautiful to look at- I wouldn't judge anyone if they find it pleasantly entertaining- but for people following the series passionately, this is a low blow. Then they write themselves out of that corner with it. I think it is a hard 6. My score will not go any higher and will probably drop with time. The visuals and cinematography are where the money has been spent and of course it looks great. Sadly the story requires you to switch off your brain and not question what is happening to accept it. South Park predicted this would be the result years ago and they were right. TLDR you do not want JJ to make a movie without a strong set in stone writing team that has already worked out what they are doing. Sadly they did not and there are endless mistakes in this movie that you are forced to overlook through all the quick cuts. An overwhelming neurological psychotic mess. If you don't blink and switch off it's probably fine. I would not recommend it. Ruined by Episode 8 and the lore problems that created. This doubled down on trashing the story. Adam Driver was probably the best part of the whole trilogy and he acted well despite the garbage he was given. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This film does to The Last Jedi that The Last Jedi did to The Force Awakens. Tosses the story points from prior films like an unwanted lightsaber. To make matters worse, it unravels internal consistency. The actors do their best with what they are given. Adam Driver noticeably stands out as particularly good. However it isn't enough to keep me from feeling like the overlords were rushed and didn't pay attention. The final film should have been given time and been a labor of love, instead it feels like canned meat pulled from the microwave early and sprinkled with just enough talent to allow you to choke it down. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I know I am in a minority when I say I really enjoyed The Last Jedi, but when I watched this, I felt cheated as aside from a few very major plot points that could not have been ignored, it was mostly whitewashed over. This movie felt like it was trying too hard to accomplish 2 movies worth of story and action into a single one which truly destroyed the pacing of it and made my enjoyment so bad. From the opening text crawl which straightaway introduced the concept that Emporer Palpatine was back ruined it as there was little to no connect between this and The Last Jedi to get that he had returned. And the fact that the trailers had ruined that big return made it just bad. The first half of the film was flying between story points to try hard to rush so much in so quickly and there was just no time to really take it all in and my brain felt like it was being put through the spin cycle on a washing machine. Once it settled down and we got to the big battle towards the end, it did find its pace and place and felt much better, even if there was too much plariarism from Return of the Jedi and Avengers End Game.

In my opinion an easy fix that would have made the movie so much better and much more shocking would be the following.

1 - Don't ruin Palpatines return in the trailers
2 - In the opening crawl, don't mention Palpatine but just a deadly message from a believed dead enemy has both the Resistance and First Order scrambling
3 - Once Kylo Ren has the Sith Wayfinder and hits Exogal, have him come face to face with Palpatine, but we don't see or hear him and Ren just goes, "But you are supposed to be dead"
4 - Have no reveal of Rey being a Palpatine, just hints with "your not who you are due to blood, but due to actiosn" etc
5 - Rey arrives at Exogal to face whoever the big bad is and we find out it is Palpatine (big reveal great and shocking). Here Palpatine explains about Reys parents and that she is his Grand-daughter.
6 - Much like the film with Kylo and Rey combining etc to defeat Plapatine. 7 - No bloody kiss!!!!!
8 - Kylo lives and Rey dies(another big shock no one would see coming)
9 - Kylo returns to being Ben and goes to Tatooine to bury the Lightsabers and takes the name Skywalker as is his family name. Now I know I have been very critical of this film, but it is the Storyline that has the biggest issues to me. Too many plotholes and paced so badly. And I would say maybe a little too much fan service.

But on the plus side, I felt the acting in this was probably the best of the sequels and the actual directing of the film was good. Plus as you would expect from Disney, the visual effects were brilliant. Some little cameos were nice, like Wedge and Nien Numb.

Overall I have to say that this was a terrible way to close a 42 years 9 film franchise.
If JJ Abrams had been given all 3 films or if 3 different directors had the films, it might have been much better from a storyline basis. As it is, it feels like JJ Abrams tried to connect his 2 films together while disregarding the one he didn't do.

I loved the visualsI finally got around to seeing this and reading the reviews prior to going to the theater I thought I was in for something absolutely horrible and to be honest, I didn't think it was as bad as everyone makes it out to be. I loved the visuals like the Star Destroyers lined up perfectly in a grid like pattern w/ lightning crashing down around them was so damn awesome I nerdgasmed out on it, sound effects were great as always in the SW series, seeing different characters, and I really enjoyed having C-3PO as more of a main character w/ more and actual lines, some of which were pretty funny I thought. BUT, there are definitely some things that are not good about this movie. I found the writing to be subpar, especially certain one liners and I couldn't help to think that even I could write better dialogue. There were two or so moments that never panned out to anything. There some pretty ridiculous force moments, nothing I can go into w/out spoiling, but way too over the top that just cheapens the movie. The worst part of the movie though was the super predictable story, again, can't go into detail but, super predictable. Finally w/ all that said, I enjoyed the movie overall. I've seen plenty of truly 1 star movies and this definitely was not one. At the same time it's not anywhere close to the quality of SW we know. Overall, I'd say it's ok, pretty good, and an enjoyable enough movie I'd recommend at least renting it. Expand

Objectively speaking, as a movie, it's actually fine. Not terrible, not great, just fine. The technical aspects are great once again: The VFX, the sound design, the production design, John William's final Star Wars score, all that it's great. The performances are fine...I mean, with a dull script the actors didn't have much to work with. The script is full of cheesy lines and I know that Star Wars has always had its fair share of cheesy or corny lines but some of the dialogue here comes close to cringeworthy. It also has a lot of plot conviniences. The "force" is now portrayed as a "Mary Sue" because it could do anything, apparently. Some twists were dumb and even unnecessary. Many characters besides Rey and Kylo Ren have literally nothing to do the whole movie. New characters like the Richard E. Grant character don't even have any character, they are just there. Lando barely does anything in the movie. His inclusion felt more like cheap fanservice instead of having a real purpose and returning characters like Palpatine are now boring! Speaking about fanservice...Oh my God...This should've been called "Fan service: The Movie". Like I said, the twists were dumb and felt straight out of a bad fanfic and also, like I said, the returning characters are boring! This whole movie is a demonstration of Disney trying not to piss off anybody. They played it sooooooo safe. They no longer want to try anything new, they are just trying to please the most fans as possible, and, judging by the User Score, they failed, because there are still fans ranting about this movie.

This trilogy is a mess, because it's not consistent. I mean, the prequels, as much as I hate them and dislike them AS MOVIES, they are consistent...Consistently bad. This trilogy...Oh my God: We got the first one in which fans were angry because it was a ripoff of A New Hope, they wanted something new. Disney tries to make something new with The Last Jedi and everyone hated it because "They ruined Star Wars". So now they made this one because no one liked the new direction and fans now hate it because "it's too late".

Like I said, as much as I don't like the prequels and still think they are inferior to any other movie in the franchise, at least they can get so bad they are entertaining...But this...This is bad too...But its bad elements are not entertaining at all...

Abrams attempts to use The Rise of Skywalker as both a conclusion to the Skywalker Saga and as an apology for The Last Jedi. In doing so, Abrams forces the film to rush through much of its runtime and story, simply due to the bloat. If you are on board for the story and in-universe changes then the last third of the film still has something to offer. A few spectacular moments and nostalgia hits make the climax an enjoyable sendoff for the saga, but the pacing and patchwork nature of much of the film leaves a bad taste in the mouth. Expand

Now, I actually don’t have a lot of issues with this film. Only 3 issues really stand out to me, but they are 3 very major issues. The first is the pacing. Was The Last Jedi too slow for you? Well, this movie moves along so fast it gives you no time to breathe! For those who just want to go on a fun ride, this might be a good thing. For me though, slowing down and letting the characters just talk to each other is really important. This movie barely does that. There is always something going on or a plot twist being dropped. It went so fast, I didn’t even have time to comprehend a lot of it! This movie feels very rushed. It does slow down a little later on, but it’s still a major issue with a good chunk of the film. There are also WAY too many new characters introduced! You have a large enough cast as it is, just work with what you already have! My second issue is Palpatine. It’s no spoiler that Emperor Palpatine returns in this movie. His voice can be heard in every trailer and he’s on the teaser poster. You’re supposed to know this going in. Palpatine’s return is handled horribly. He’s supposed to be the main villain even though he’s been completely absent from the last two movies. It’s completely anti-climactic. None of the characters know who he is or have any real connection with him. We’re supposed to accept that he’s somehow still alive even though we saw him die! He fell down a pit and EXPLODED!!! They tell you he came back to life in the opening crawl and then go on to hand-wave it away with a prequel meme. That’s it. I’m not kidding. It’s embarrassing how poorly-written he is. They never explain where he’s been all this time, what he’s been up to, why he’s been doing it, how he’s been doing it, why he’s waited so long, or how he was resurrected. Did someone fish his body out of the Death Star? Is he some kind of clone, like in the old Dark Empire comics? Is he a ghost? I have no idea, and I bet the filmmakers don’t either. It’s insulting. The third issue I have with this film is the lack of continuity with the other movies, The Last Jedi especially. A lot of that movie is either ignored or undone by this movie. Rose is replaced with a giant slug monster and relegated to a background role, they bring in an Emperor figure when the last movie made a point to get rid of that and have Kylo Ren be the main villain, and let’s just say that Rey isn’t exactly a nobody. Could you imagine if Richard Marquand got rid of Lando and made Luke not actually Vader’s son in Return of the Jedi? It’s so frustrating. JJ Abrams sacrificed a flowing narrative for this trilogy for his own original vision. It’s selfish and it’s childish. Again, this may be a positive if you hated The Last Jedi. I really like The Last Jedi, so this really bothered me. It’s clear that there was no plan for this trilogy from the beginning and the filmmakers didn’t have enough communication with one another. It’s not only TLJ that this movie retcons. Bringing Palpatine back really diminishes Anakin’s sacrifice at the end of Return of the Jedi and kind of rewrites the entire Star Wars mythos. He was the chosen one, prophesied to destroy the Sith and bring balance to the Force. He did that by killing Palpatine in Return of the Jedi. Only he didn’t, Palpatine survived. I had the same issue with the old Expanded Universe. I thought the reason they got rid of the EU was so that they could improve on the post-Jedi storyline, not repeat the same mistakes it made, only somehow worse. Who’s the chosen one now? What’s the point of the prophecy? What did Anakin die for? I have no idea! This movie also contradicts some of the newer books and comics, but I'd have to get too nerdy and off-topic to properly explain that here. Now, from how much I’m trashing this movie, you might think that I hate it. I don’t. I still had fun watching it and there was quite a bit that I enjoyed. Rey and Kylo Ren are still great, the effects are excellent as always (The integration of the Carrie Fisher footage is pretty seamless.), the action is thrilling, there’s good comedy, the acting is good and there are many surprises that got me genuinely excited. I also liked how it didn’t retcon the Luke storyline from TLJ, they just made it more clear for those in the audience who didn’t fully understand the point of it in the last movie. This movie also explains why Hyperspace ramming isn’t a common tactic in warfare in the Star Wars universe, after it was shown to be so deadly in The Last Jedi. Overall, this movie is an absolute mess and a major disappointment, but it makes for a fun time out at the movies. Just don’t think too hard about how it connects with the other Star Wars movies and you’ll be fine. I can see why people like it, it’s just not for me. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Rise of Skywalker is an entertaining, action, popcorn movie that moves so fast in hopes that you don't pay attention too close. The Rise of Skywalker is two movies squeezed into one, and it suffers for it with scenes happening simply because the plot needs them to. The movie also goes out of it's way to retcon The Last Jedi due to the corner it wrote director J J Abrams into, minimizing the importance of Snoke, and having Luke do a 180° degree turn back to his original optimistic self.
The movie also fails to address the BIG elephant in the room, how Palpatine survived. The audience gets one throwaway line about it being "unnatural" and then the movie moves on, as if an old man surviving being at the center of a moon sized explosion makes any sense. The final fight of the film also has Rey be the one to put down Palpatine for good. In doing so it undoes the entire point of the original six films, which set Anakin Skywalker up as the Chosen One who would destroy the Sith after his son Luke turned him back to the light, in one fell swoop.
To top all of this off, Rey is revealed to be a Palpatine herself. After all the remaining Skywalkers have been killed off (including Ben Solo) Rey Palpatine looks into the sunset and says her name is Rey Skywalker, driving the final nail into the coffin holding what was the Skywalker legacy.

It's pretty sad to see the studio trying to shore up the review balance by having either algorithms or humans generate fake positive reviews. Take a look at a sample of them. Score typically of ten points with a few nines and eights in there to throw people off the scent. But the pattern is clear. The review itself is one or two sentences and incredibly this is the single only review ever written by this "person". The profile name looks generated and the profile photo (if there is one) appears either scraped off the web or itself generated. Shame on Disney and Lucasfilm.

Original review submitted on Dec 20, 2019:
Slightly better than "The Last Jedi" which is faint praise indeed. However, this is the reckoning we get when the machine known as Disney gets control of the most beloved sci-fi movie franchise of all time. A creative abyss. Like others have noted, the filmmakers seem to literally be check-boxing every nostalgic note from the original series. Some of the visuals are stunning but the script and acting is so flat that you just want the damn thing to be over as quickly as possible. On to "The Mandalorian" and whatever the Mouse has in mind next. Mercifully, this saga has finally been shuttered.

I love Star Wars, but every single movie has things to love and things to complain about, and I’m fine with that. It’s about the spirit and the characters. There’s plenty of good stuff in Rise of Skywalker, too, but I’ve never felt such emptiness from any of the movies. This felt like it was somehow both trying too hard and phoning it in at the same time. I like the three main heroes from the new trilogy, and Kylo, and I still love and care about Rey, but their journeys felt perfunctory and predictable here. And the story, almost everything is either over-explained or under-explained. The scale was overly epic but without making me believe in it or care about what’s happening—kind of like the worst of modern comic book movies.
The opening crawl was great and got me excited, but it really was almost immediately downhill from there for me. There’s too much fan service and too little storytelling that actually makes a viewer care. In the end, it made this final trilogy feel completely unnecessary (with the exception of introducing Rey and Kylo). It’s the first Star Wars that I have no desire to see more than once.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After this movie, it's clear that this is probably the most schizophrenic trilogy that I've ever seen. We go from light-hearted rehash to depressive art house film to convoluted apologia. It's so obvious while watching that none of this was planned from the beginning. The film feels like a movie 2 and a movie 3 jammed into 2 hours and 15 minutes. We get more details on Finn's, Poe's, Rey's, and Kylo's backstories when we should've learned this in the second movie. The damage control in the movie is far too apparent. Palpatine is introduced out of nowhere in the opening crawl with no explanation as to how he survived getting thrown down a shaft and subsequently exploding. The Holdo maneuver is handwaved away in a forced line before the final battle. The Knights of Ren are present, but do absolutely nothing except die.

The movie's pacing is a huge problem. We see four planets and follow four characters in the first 20 minutes of the movie and more if you count the lightspeed skipping scene. After that, the movie rushes on purely driven by plot convenience and never lets up in the same vein as The Force Awakens. J.J. doesn't want you have to anytime to understand what's going on because he knows it all falls apart after a few seconds of thought. It's really hard to write a review that reads as coherent given the nature of the film so I'm just going to move on to bullet points of things I liked and things I didn't quite understand while watching the movie.

Pros

Rey's character was engaging for once, though I still couldn't pick up on any flaws that were outside of her control (her parentage)

Rey's and Kylo's lightsaber fight on Endor was done well, though the lack of music was odd

Kylo was intimidating for once

Rey's escape from the Star Destroyer was well done. I liked how we got to see someone standing on the edge of the hangar for the first time

I liked how prominent C-3PO was

Acting was good all around

Cons

J.J. still doesn't understand lightspeed, though that's a problem with every Disney-era film to be fair

Force skyping now allows you to grab objects and have lightsaber fights at the whim of the plot

The Force Dyad, which I took to be a half-hearted explanation for Rey's power, is mentioned in a throwaway line and could've been left out of the movie with no effect on the plot

Force healing is introduced with no explanation as to why it wasn't mentioned in the first eight films. Additionally, this makes Anakin's turn to the Dark Side pointless

Highly plot-relevant vision that Rey has takes place completely off-screen. Considering the film feels very short as is I'm not sure why this wasn't in the movie

Hux was still used for comic relief

In the OT, when the main cast bickered with 3PO, it was funny because he was being annoying. In this film, the cast's treatment of him just feels mean-spirited because he's not annoying at all

Luke kept Leia's lightsaber, even though TLJ made his position on lightsabers pretty clear

The X-Wing that had been underwater for however many years still works perfectly fine

I didn't like how Leia's death was done at all. Would've preferred she lived through the movie if that was how it was going to be done

We see a brief flashback of Luke and Leia training together, taunting the audience by giving them a glimpse of what the ST could've been

Palpatine doesn't break a sweat from unleashing Force lightning into the atmosphere but Leia dies from...Force whispering?

The choice of Jedi speaking to Rey felt like it was at random

The writers actually thought that Rey ending up with someone who tortured her and tried to get her to kill her friends was a sane idea

The choice of planets (a mere three) for the celebration made no sense whatsoever

I didn't remember a single new theme. However, I did notice that the score ripped parts straight from Clones, Empire, and Return Things I'm sure were addressed and I must have missed Ochi's ship is in the same spot after all these years Lando happened to be on Pasaana after all these years There were coordinates written on the Sith dagger for whatever reason Overall, this was probably my least favorite film in the Saga, concluding my least favorite trilogy in the Saga. Ending the Skywalker Saga with a Palpatine saving the day just doesn't sit right with me. You could practically skip the entire original trilogy at this point. It's just the backstory of the failures that Rey has to rectify. I appreciate that some effort was made to repair the mess that they were left with after The Last Jedi but the whole trilogy makes it abundantly clear they should've had George on board and used his treatments. It makes me appreciate all of the original six films more, that's for sure.

Still better then Last Jedi, which was not a Star Wars movie. This one however is a extremely hostile shape-shifting extraterrestrial organism as a result of poor writing and no trilogy concept at the beginning. Ian McDiarmid acting is flawless, Rey is doing good as well. I was very bored in every scene which was not involving the lightsaber. I liked Kylo Ren at the first movie. VIII. and now IX. made him one of the most worthless force user villains ever in SW universe. Ending was unfortunate and weak. Music not very original as well as the previous themes. Clearly just rip-offs, no creativity. Handling the continuation of the Saga is a disgrace and error which should be addressed. I will pray that Disney will learn their lesson and we will get something better from it in the future. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Before we start the review, I have to say...Tenet looks **** awesome! That prologue definitely opened me to a lot of possibilities as to how that movie will be about, besides a time version of Inception that happens to be in a Spy Movie. That "Filmed in IMAX Film" gave me a super great feeling, dude...
Too bad that, after that, the movie began.

You know, it's not often that I get an insufferable Movie Experience like this one (both for the movie and the Audience, especially considering one of these happens during a Universal Movie), and I'm sad to call The Rise Of Skywalker one of those experiences, because, for one, it started really strong. Palpatine's alive, Kylo Ren's looking for him, only to find out that Palpy's been internally toying around with Kylo. That could lead to some great moments. The Resistance is dependant on looking for a MacGuffin that could put an end to the First (or Final) Order? Ok, it's weak, but I'm sure I'll get a kick out of it. And, for 30-40 mins it was that. But once the first confrontation between Rey and Kylo happens, and we see that Rey is a Palpatine, that's where the movie just skyrocketed in a Pit Of Death, blowing itself up like a Creeper (pun intended).

Because from then on, the Screenplay gets so rushed and messy, that it feels obsessed with JJ Abrams and Chris Terrio (as well as Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly?) pulling everything they can out of their asses to make sure we have a coherent story that serves as a great conclusion, while really it just is "another Franchise Movie". Tons of ships flying towards 1000s of Star Destroyers to blow some **** up in a Return Of The Jedi-wannabe climax to try and have some Spectacle, characters (new and old. Poor Lando) that aren't fleshed out enough, and plot twists that are just the most random **** they sometimes made me scream or question in anger at the things they did.

Just so you know, they also rip off a sequence from Godzilla - King Of The Monsters. **** GODZILLA - KING OF THE MONSTERS (where Palpatine shoots lightning bolts out of the sky to "destroy" every flying thing, both good and bad? I've already seen that, thanks. It was really real and brutal before. Also yeah, still have to see some more of King Ghidorah). I don't know why they did that, but it most certainly resulted in an Earrape that I don't wanna hear ever again. If it gets an Oscar nom for Sound Mix because of the Earrape, I'll be so mad.

And the case with The Last Jedi is mostly on the Screenplay's decision, making it a Love/Hate situation. A "will they/won't they" scenario, because either, Characters feel so desperate narrating backstories from that movie, or they just ruin the whole Force Conversation thing by making objects suddenly disappear from one another's location. Like okay, that also happened in Last Jedi, but only for a few seconds, and with smaller objects, not Darth Vader's burned helmet.

But hey, at least the technical department is still strong. The Art Department is once again great eye candy to look at, despite the Cinematography being too quick in parts, and I love the new look of Palpatine (the menacing figure moving with the help of a machine, GLaDOS Style? Cool!).

But again, I shouldn't be complaining too much because "the Fans will love this laziness!". Look, I'm not stopping you to see it, because if you want, go ahead. I'm sure you'll like it better than I did. But if you loved The Last Jedi as much as I did, then be sure of the random madness that this movie will give you. Not awful, but certainly a spectacularly insufferable and artful mess.

Star Wars: I Gotta A Ménage à Trois Feeling About This - Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker or SW:TROS or just TROS - is not a bad film.
Not as good nor will any be as good as the first three Star Wars films released
beginning in 1977 and certainly nowhere near as bad as the media is making it
out to be.(sidenote) About 95% of folk who claim to be 'film critics' in the 21st
century suffer from an affliction known as 'heaDUPtheIRAss', which I think is a
Dutch term that means they have no idea what they are talking about. Anyway,
with Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker you still experience the 'roll your eyes'
moments, the story suffers from 'convenience' and the logistics of the characters
never make sense - this transcends every one of the trilogies and is almost
expected from any Star Wars film. The VFX in Rise was meh....other Star Wars
productions have produced better. I was hugely disappointed in Oscar Isaac, an
Oscar caliber performer who pretty much dialed in his delivery. The one whose
star shone bright, who after The Force Awakens stated she was not a Star Wars fan,
Daisy Ridley blew the doors off everyone - this version of the Rey character is
what Star Wars films should have contained from the beginning. It was sad to
see the Kylo Ren character be transformed into what Rise delivered, which is no
fault to Adam Driver, because..... J.J. Abrams should have never been given the
the latest Star Wars trilogy mantle in the first place. J.J. Abrams has a bit
of originality, but there is way too much of his mentor's vision in the majority
of his work. Of course, Rian Johnson took a HUGE dump on The Last Jedi, so
bringing Abrams back for the save on Rise was a worthy attempt, nut in no way
could make up for the damage done by Johnson. Also, J.J. loves introducing new
audiences to existing sagas by taking old storylines and elements and reconditioning
them as new - these are as obvious as a $3.00 bill and... Just Stop It, J.J..
Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker was an OK film of a troubled trilogy that should
never have begun without a team of writers, producers and directors who bled
Star Wars from their veins and had the complete vision of the complete Star Wars
saga documented and storyboarded before casting.

truly wanted to enjoy this film. After a two year break since 'The last Jedi' (which I didn't hate) I was ready for this film to tie up all the loose ends and provide a conclusive end to the 'Skywalker Saga'.
However, rushed pacing, lack of character development and need to pander to the audience of the original trilogy has left this final film feeling hollow.
If you go to Star Wars for mindless scifi action then there maybe some fun to had here. As the finale does provide a visual spectacle that would make even the most disgruntled fan crack a smile. Beyond this, there is very little to enjoyment to be had as the opening hour sees a glorified fetch quest take place with very little reason for the audience to care. Then, when impactful things do happened they are retconned as little as two scenes later.
To misquote old Ben:

The movie plays out like an endless search for various McGuffins, all of which are given to the main characters in almost the same moment as we find out about their existence. It's like...you know when a five year old tells you a story, which is comprised entirely of short, barely connected sentences, followed by an "and then..." and repeated ad infinitum? That's this movie.

The acting is good, and the music is as stellar as ever, but that doesn't save the incoherent and anxiously-paced plot.

He is way more creative and I’m sure he could’ve followed up the last Jedi in a satisfying way. The problem with Abrams is that he’s not good at telling stories so when you present him a challenge, like many ideas he set up being discarded in the second movie, he didn’t know what to do. So he attempted to cater to nagging fans and back pedal on the choices made in the second movie which left a movie with no clear goal in mind and it’s clear Palpatine was a desperate last minute decision which is a shame because given the right story, his return could’ve been cool. I still don’t understand the hate the last Jedi gets. Luke has a great arc in that movie. He starts out grumpy and ends up realizing he was wrong to hide away. This movie goes out of its way to hammer that point home again. Why? Luke already acknowledged his error in the previous movie. Saying it again just feels like a stupid apology to the overly entitled fans that cried havoc on the last movie. What really happened with the Last Jedi is that fan theories were thrown out the window and really hurt the sensitive fans feelings. Snoke didn’t matter, Rey came from nothing. These were 2 things that had people’s imagination running rampant after the force awakens and turns out their theories were dismissed. Dismissed for good reason. You don’t have to be a famous bloodline to use the force. Rian Johnson understood that. Snoke wasn’t important because it was always kylo rens story. I honestly could go on and on about why the choices made in that movie were great but I’d be met with resistance from entitled fans who want their Star Wars to play out the same way it always has. Anyways back to my point. The Rise of Skywalker is a pathetic attempt at catering to vocal fans and it resulted in the worst movie in the entire franchise. Terrible pacing, erratic editing, and forced inclusion of Palpatine with no explanation for his survival provided. It hurts my view on the entire trilogy now. Like I honestly don’t appreciate the first 2 as much now cuz I know it all ends in disaster. At this point the Mandalorian is our last glimmer of hope. If you haven’t seen it, check it out. Expand

Abrams seems to just want to destroy all the work Johnson had achieved in The Last Jedi, and does so while failing to build anything like a well paced storyline. What follows is clunky and uninspired storyline: the first half goes by without anything interesting happening, and by the time the halfway point is reached the ending is obvious. What makes this even worse is certain particular character arcs which are brought to amazing heights in The Last Jedi only to be brought back to 'reality' with a thud as Abrams works his errata magic. This is practically insulting to what Johnson managed to do with his movie and is just confusing to watch.

There are upsides, however. John Williams and his team do an amazing job as always with the score, with the March of the Resistance being a stand out track. The acting is on the whole good, especially considering the lacklustre dialogue they were given. As with any Star Wars, the visual effects are amazing in themselves, and if you're going along purely for the spectacle and the magnificence of this Space Opera then you will probably have a great time. Overall, while Episode IX will always be remembered in my mind at least as the worst Star Wars, I would still recommend going to watch it. Whether you like it or not, this is the end of the saga that we have been waiting for.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Major Spoiler alert. This movie is colossally disappointing. Even trying to throw it a bone by judging the personal story interactions separate from the rest still only gets it to 54% give or take. The personal story lines rate a solid 88% or so. But the "wars" part...WARS is in the title people...is so unforgivably bad. (JJ Abrams has done some amazing work, yet where he is a writer seems to be when I can't stand his movies.) The "wars" part of this is recycled Force Awakens nonsense that was just pathetic copying of episode 4 but with UBER stupidity added. In episode 4 stuff was pre-caveated in mission briefs about what they were up against. Abrams got a slight pass with the absurd Starkiller Base and the shielded thing they had to strike the first time for episode 7 because it seemed like he was trying to lure in new fans and have some suspension of disbelief but still make it fun for the new folks and have on purpose throwbacks to episode 4. This time...you don't get that pass. A, you did it once before, B, no one can suspend that much disbelief. Just a few examples of the absurdities in episode 9: You magically only have 16 hours to complete this mission. Star destroyers can travel freaking light years but cannot take off from a planet without help. You can "light skip" from the hip and magically not appear inside matter. And the tie fighters can magically come along with you. You don't have long range missiles or torpedoes anymore. You can't just laser blast the horrendously stupid "nav beacon thing". It is blast shielded because he screams it during the "ground assault". You couldn't just overwhelm the shields. A single turbocannon ON a first order ship can pierce the shields and armor of the command deck...but not that nav beacon. Those same turbocannons dont do that much damage to other capital ships. Oh wait, I think they yelled shields don't work in atmosphere as well or some nonsense. Palpatine can force lightning an entire fleet. These star destroyers have the same weakness as an Independence Day ship. These star destroyers have no upgrades EXCEPT the power to destroy whole planets. Palpatine can force suck people now...but waited until these two happened to be around to do it. We can just sit on top of the Millennium Falcon while it is banking...away from a crashing first order star destroyer. Why JJ Abrams and the entire staff with hundreds if not thousands of people around let any of this garbage make it through without one person saying wait, should we not make it semi realistic? Should we read an Honor Harrington book or Starfire book and at least try? Maybe consult a Navy or Air Force person? NAH! FUDGE ALL THAT! Let's use this space combat scenario a five year old came up with or this 1980s Nintendo game plot. Oh and don't forget to occasionally yell out why it has to be this way because that will work. So disappointing. Expand

Very awkward pacing, as plot is just characters going from one place to another, very brief visits and even new and old characters and planets get, at most, five minutes screentime. Of course Rey is vindicated and becomes potentially the most powerful Jedi that ever lived. Some scenes are blatant rip-off (sorry, homages) of OT scenes. This feels like when you are trying to clean some mess in your report or homework, and end up tearing the sheet of paper, then putting it back together with scotch tape. It will get you a pass, but not very far in life.

In the prequels the ‘bad guy’, Anakin, had a good reason to be turned to the dark side, you could even sympathize with his situation. But this kid, kylo ren, just reflects the typical teenager who wants to be bad without any reason and disobey his parents. Just ridiculous.

The return of the emperor could somehow be explained, as he were a Darth Plagueis apprentice , who really had a deep knowledge about the dark side, and maybe the emperor did get made a clone of him.
This would be surprising, but not ‘non canon’.

HOWEVER, they reflected the emperor as a pathetic old man who can be defeated by a girl who didn’t get proper training. I really thought that maybe this film would be good, because I saw that there were more siths in the temple, and maybe the rule of two could disappear. But all that got blasted by a girl overpowered.

This film was better than the 8th, but I really miss George Lucas .

The plot itself is a mess, full of MacGuffins and conveniences. The first 30 minutes are completely hyperactive to the point where it's tiring and the film never recovers. We see a gross overuse of nostalgia and a return of a foe that should never have come back. Lame one-liners are not funny or clever. The overarching plot is designed to make it seem busy but it's just cluttered with random happenings. Why was it so hard to craft a three-movie plot arc? All the new characters (Finn, Poe, Rey etc) don't have anything to say for themselves. We don't know them worth a damn. Even Rose was relegated to a nothing character, possibly in response to her backlash. Hux was pointless and is also given nothing. It's like they looked at criticism and decided the best way to address it was to sweep the characters under the rug and keep audiences' attention diverted. The old heroes died for nothing and the franchise dies along with them.

This movie is all over the place and is riddled with plot holes. So many scenes were set up to have emotional weight but are quickly thrown aside. It feels cheap and all of it’s epic moments feel unearned. I only semi enjoyed it because itThis movie is all over the place and is riddled with plot holes.
