Title: "Across the Spider-Verse: A Thrilling Sequel Packed with Stunning Animation and Unpredictable Twists"

Rating: ★★★★½ (4.5/5)

Note: This review is based on a second viewing of the film.

"After watching 'Across the Spider-Verse' for the second time, I couldn't help but appreciate the film even more. With the initial viewing leaving me in awe, I immediately booked another ticket to delve deeper into its intricacies. Now, armed with a newfound understanding, I am ready to share my thoughts on this remarkable sequel."

"Across the Spider-Verse" returns with an enchanting second installment that will leave audiences captivated and eagerly anticipating the next chapter. This film is a testament to the creative brilliance of its team, as it delivers a balanced blend of introspective storytelling, breathtaking animation, and surprising plot twists.

Upon revisiting the movie, it becomes evident that the deliberate, slower pace of the first half provides a deeper understanding of Spider Gwen's journey, both before and after the events of the original film. It also offers a glimpse into Miles' current endeavors while introducing us to The Spot, the formidable "villain of the week." However, once the stage is set and the second half unfolds, the film accelerates into hyperdrive, bombarding the audience with a whirlwind of revelations and new elements.

The storytelling in "Across the Spider-Verse" is a masterclass in keeping viewers on the edge of their seats. It expertly teases us with clues about what's to come, only to subvert our expectations entirely. The desire for more is amplified, leaving us craving the third film and eagerly speculating about its mysteries. This sequel succeeds in leaving an indelible mark on the audience's imagination.

The animation in this movie is a spectacle to behold. With meticulous attention to detail and a seamless blend of various art styles, the visual experience surpasses that of its predecessor. The transitions between different backgrounds and the inclusion of comic sound effects further enhance the dynamic nature of the scenes. Every frame is a work of art, a testament to the care and passion poured into the animation process.

The voice acting in "Across the Spider-Verse" is exemplary, with Shameik Moore reprising his role as Miles Morales and Luna Lauren Vélez shining as Rio Morales. Their performances inject authenticity and emotion into the characters, grounding them in relatable struggles and triumphs. The ensemble cast delivers a captivating performance, further enhancing the film's impact.

The core of the story lies in exploring the inner turmoil of each character and the weight of the choices they must make in the name of the greater good. Miles, in particular, grapples with the dual identity of a gifted student and a superhero. These thematic elements add depth to the narrative, reminding us that even heroes face internal conflicts.

In conclusion, "Across the Spider-Verse" is a thrilling sequel that builds upon its predecessor's success. It exhibits outstanding animation, compelling storytelling, and memorable voice acting. While the film's pacing might feel uneven at times, the overall experience is a triumph. It sets the stage perfectly for the highly anticipated third installment, leaving audiences eagerly awaiting its arrival. With a rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars, this film is a must-watch for fans of the Spider-Verse and lovers of visually stunning and emotionally resonant cinema.

WhetherI didn't think much of the predecessor to this animated wonder and therefore I didn't carry sky-high expectations. And yet, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is about as close as you can get to seeing a comic book coming to life. Whether it's movies or series.
This is far above any Spider-Man series ever made.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse deals with multiple universes and yet its greatest achievement is having an identity that makes it its own universe. Even with the cameos and the several easter eggs from other Spider-Man movies.

This has achieved a pulsating and vibrant life and spirit that makes it probably the best movie ever made about Spider-Man to date. Maybe it's the emotion talking but honestly what I saw here far surpasses Maguire's trilogy, Garfield dilogy and Holland's trilogy. It's that good.

The animation is a portentous masterpiece. There is so much to unravel in all the styles and colors displayed on screen that I was truly enraptured. And the music. Daniel Pemberton music was outstanding.
I was amazed with the whole thing.

I won't tell you more. See it for yourselves. Believe the hype.

No or little political messages, eye melting visuals and a good story. This movie delves deep into themes of destiny and fate, how flaws and bad things improve people, and many more. The new characters added fit the spider verse feel and aren't over bearing. The only complaint I have is that some of the characters in the first movie were sidelined. The characters are great and I enjoy, but the old characters, specifically Penny, Noir-Spider, and Porker don't have any significant screen time. However Miles and Gwens story and character arcs are further fleshed out with some really hard hitting moments. The jokes are well-placed and not too much. I never felt like I was drowning in unfunny jokes, and most of them hit. The action was top notch the same impactful level as the last. I went with my family and everyone agreed that it was really good. This movie is a must see, better than anything Disey has put out in ten years. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Overall, I liked this movie. Giving it a 6 only because of the cop out ending. The aesthetics and animations were absolutely stunning. They really took it to the next level in that regard. Solid character development throughout. Soundtrack was solid again. The only two complaints I have are as follows: 1) Plot - The plot did not have as much consistency as I would have liked. They claim that changing stories or preventing certain things from happening could destroy an entire universe due to it "messing up the cannon" of the world. Yet they go around from universe to universe with no issue messing up all kinds of things and cannon. So you can't let one guy die, but can have someone not named Peter Parker be Spiderman and that's totally okay? It made no sense to me. 2) The to be continued ending... That was a serious gut punch to me. I paid for a full movie from start to finish. This reeked of a cash grab to me. Easily could've wrapped up this entire plot with an extra 20 minutes of runtime or so. Now I guess I have to wait another 5 years to see how this finishes? I will not remember everything by then, and I hate rewarding movies that do this with my money so I may not actually go see the follow up. If you're okay with cliff hanger endings I recommend this movie. It's better than 95% of new content out there. I just wish the plot was a bit better. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's a good movie but not as exceptional story wise as I hoped. It's a well executed and logical follow up that plays it somewhat expected (despite its visual audaciousness). Yes they throw a few curveballs at you, but...perhaps we've finally seen too many multiverse movies. If we're judging multiverse films as their own genre at this point, I found this plot run of the mill. One of the biggest single flaws in this film is its ending. They decide to pull back in the last stretch to bring it in for a soft landing with "To be continued...”. Well, has that worked for the Matrix or Back to the Future? Does anyone believe part 3 is the best of those franchises? (or part 2 for that matter?). Maybe Spider-verse will buck the trend, but it left a sour taste in my mouth knowing that - forever - this 140min film is not a standalone adventure. Stories need to have an ending. I understand why writers would want to take this route as it’s easier than having to reinvent the wheel twice, but for audiences we are left with a weakened second entry that feels incomplete. TV shows can get away with cliffhangers because the stories are already shorter to begin with, and they are meant to propel the next installment while maintaining viewer interest. For major studio films, I think it's a poison kiss of creative bankruptcy. It makes the second 2 movies in a trilogy feel more like a homework assignment rushed to turn it in. "Okay we wrote the damn trilogy." 'You mean...you wrote one long story and cut it in two?!'. It’s the cinematic equivalent of double spacing an essay. You know what I like about Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade? It's reminiscent of the earlier films, but it's its own movie. You can be in a 'last crusade mood' or a 'temple of doom mood.'

My other big criticism of this movie is its pacing. The emotional beats are far too many and way too stretched out. I think uncle Ben dying in Spider-Man 1 took 1/10 the screen time of some of this and Across the Spider Verse is not 10 times better for the effort. It lends an air of self seriousness to an otherwise bouncy plot and weighs things down disproportionately to adding emotional heft. I dutifully watched but was unmoved by most of the emotional scenes. Which makes me suspect they were dutifully written more than deeply inspired.

Though the film is entertaining to watch for the most part my problems with it are more than simple nitpicks. I am curious to see how it holds up on second viewing, but I’m not compelled to go back soon. The first one I thought was a masterpiece when I first saw it, but has become more tedious on re-viewings and I can’t quite figure out why (my theory is that quippy dialogue does not age well). I suspect this movie may have similar issues but I sincerely hope I am wrong and that the opposite happens where I appreciate it more as time goes on… especially once part three is released and the ending of this one is more of a detail than a disappointment.

Maybe that will change, but as of now, it's slightly below the first. The animation is the best of any animated movie every, which I think is almost a no-brainer. It truly is a work of art. While there weren't as many jokes, as it was taking itself more serious, when it was trying to be funny, it was hilarious. I think what truly stuck out to me though, was the emotion. It was slower paced, yet it felt like it when by so quickly! You could really take in all the emotion. I might as well just stop here. Like the first, it feels disingenuous to describe this movie using words. When you watch it, you will know exactly what i'm talking about! What are you doing here?! Go watch it already!! Expand

It's been a few hours since I've seen this and I'm still left wondering: HOW DID THEY PULL IT OFF???

A movie like this does NOT come around often, if at all. They could have easily done a retread of the first film and I would have been happy. But NO. Instead I got a thoughtful, mature and at times morally bleak experience that I'm nearly shocked got a PG-rating.

Pro tip to Hollywood: get Phil Lord and Chris Miller to work on everything that you wrongfully assume you can pull off.

Definitely not your typical Spider-Man movie

"Superhero Movie", "Comic Book Movie", "Spider-Man Movie".
when you hear this the only picture might come to your mind is A STORY ABOUT THE HERO WHO IS GONNA KICK THE VILLAIN'S ASS BY THE END. let me tell you, going to this movie throw all those expectations out.

Actually all those labels I mentioned earlier apply to this film, in the most hardcore fashion you can imagine, and way more. It is the best in all those categories in every possible way and also elevates itself to something even more moving, more interesting and more compelling.

By the time you get to the third act it gets dark, dramatic, suspenseful, mysterious, nervous and full of twists and turns in a very The-Silence-of-the-Lambs way. And I think might be a bit hard for kids to digest. The stakes are way higher that makes the first film INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE tonally naive compared to this.

And don't get me started on the animation. the richest and the most glamorous you have ever witnessed, I bet. and certainly can not be topped by anyone but these filmmakers themselves. The different styles of animation is not meant to show off (at least not primarily) but to reflect the emotions and the story every time. You will have to go through it frame by frame to absorb all the beauty and the details put in it. also the music by genius Daniel Pemberton elevates it to the highest level.

There should be a campaign promoting this film to hopefully get various Oscar nominations (beside the best animated feature, which will win undoubtedly. RIP other nominees); like best picture, best adopted screenplay and best score. Anyway, this is the ultimate film, hands down. besides a few fan service-y parts, which for me held the movie back at some points (but I can forget about them), everything else hits hard in this film. I hope there were more filmmakers like Lord and Miller working today, and I hope Disney and Pixar take ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE as the punch in the balls they deserved so they progress and make good movies again. If the third part BEYOND THE SPIDER-VESRE is as good and surprising as this, then ladies and gentlemen we will have one of the greatest trilogies of all time. Don't hesitate to watch, as the director Justin K. Thompson puts it, THE MOST EXPENSIVE INDEPENDENT ART-HOUSE MOVIE OF ALL TIME.
