I was overwhelmed! Mostly good characters. Quite good story, convincing and interesting, but with glitches... Emotionally powerful and enjoyable. Sadly Miles Morales is only Miles Morales - selfish kid who does not want to face the consequences... Music well integrated. Lots of cameos, easter eggs and jokes. Multiverse done right! Deserved 8/10... But wait: did I mention there is no end? No conclusion, no climax, just cut and TO BE CONTINUED! WT.? Very disappointing. So my rating is 4/10, I will raise it when I see the ending... Expand

I can't believe that I want to write a negative comment, but unlike the first part, which was a masterpiece, the second part performed extremely poorly. The story is boring and maybe unimportant (why unimportant? Because it is not new).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Technically good, conceptually stale. This movie does humor better than most Marvel films, the action is more similar to the comics and the animation is top notch. It is a little too much flash, visually. It distracts from the plot. The emotional tone fails. The parents are a bore and I'm not even sure there's chemistry between Miles and Gwen now? Its still weighted with agenda driven nonsense as well. It passed the time. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's a good movie but not as exceptional story wise as I hoped. It's a well executed and logical follow up that plays it somewhat expected (despite its visual audaciousness). Yes they throw a few curveballs at you, but...perhaps we've finally seen too many multiverse movies. If we're judging multiverse films as their own genre at this point, I found this plot run of the mill. One of the biggest single flaws in this film is its ending. They decide to pull back in the last stretch to bring it in for a soft landing with "To be continued...”. Well, has that worked for the Matrix or Back to the Future? Does anyone believe part 3 is the best of those franchises? (or part 2 for that matter?). Maybe Spider-verse will buck the trend, but it left a sour taste in my mouth knowing that - forever - this 140min film is not a standalone adventure. Stories need to have an ending. I understand why writers would want to take this route as it’s easier than having to reinvent the wheel twice, but for audiences we are left with a weakened second entry that feels incomplete. TV shows can get away with cliffhangers because the stories are already shorter to begin with, and they are meant to propel the next installment while maintaining viewer interest. For major studio films, I think it's a poison kiss of creative bankruptcy. It makes the second 2 movies in a trilogy feel more like a homework assignment rushed to turn it in. "Okay we wrote the damn trilogy." 'You mean...you wrote one long story and cut it in two?!'. It’s the cinematic equivalent of double spacing an essay. You know what I like about Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade? It's reminiscent of the earlier films, but it's its own movie. You can be in a 'last crusade mood' or a 'temple of doom mood.'

My other big criticism of this movie is its pacing. The emotional beats are far too many and way too stretched out. I think uncle Ben dying in Spider-Man 1 took 1/10 the screen time of some of this and Across the Spider Verse is not 10 times better for the effort. It lends an air of self seriousness to an otherwise bouncy plot and weighs things down disproportionately to adding emotional heft. I dutifully watched but was unmoved by most of the emotional scenes. Which makes me suspect they were dutifully written more than deeply inspired.

Though the film is entertaining to watch for the most part my problems with it are more than simple nitpicks. I am curious to see how it holds up on second viewing, but I’m not compelled to go back soon. The first one I thought was a masterpiece when I first saw it, but has become more tedious on re-viewings and I can’t quite figure out why (my theory is that quippy dialogue does not age well). I suspect this movie may have similar issues but I sincerely hope I am wrong and that the opposite happens where I appreciate it more as time goes on… especially once part three is released and the ending of this one is more of a detail than a disappointment.

I think, the sequel is a victim of the success (critical, commercial and artistic) of the first installment. The producers took that success as licence for what turned out to be the content of the sequel. Four things made this experience unsatisfactory for me. The Opening scene with Gwen was boring and an ill-advised start to the movie; there were numerous scenes that could have been handled in much shorter time periods; there were too many spidermen and timelines (that there are many does not mean so many have to be crammed into one movie). The fourth, was the culmination of the first two, which took up unnecessary time, the story was not concluded in this movie, there is to be a second part. Not good. I will not take away from the movie, the fact that the things that made the first installment an outstanding movie are still there. There are two areas in the movie, where things were moved up a notch from the first; In a scene Miles and Gwen have a full fledged conversation while web-slinging, and then continue the conversation, while stationary but hanging (actually sitting) upside down from a the top of a skyscrapper. My opinion of this movie is mixed. Expand

I was excited because I considered Into the Spider-Verse not only one of my favourite animated movies but one of my favourite movies, period. So I was concerned over whether the sequel would carry its' heavy legacy or succumb to "sequelitis". Well I didn't like this film.

I LOVED THIS FILM! The animation is once again stellar, challenging what animation is capable of. It makes me realise more superhero films need to be animated to not only better capture the spirit of the comic it is adapted from but also show more than what can be done in live-action. The characters are still as enjoyable as ever with even more colourful creative characters added to the line-up, with a personal highlight, being Pavit Prabhakar, voiced by Deadpool's delightful Karan Soni. Not once did I ever feel disengaged with so much thrilling action, suspensing drama and beautiful visuals on the screen. The Spot is an incredible villain with a large range transforming over the film from a hilarious goofball to a complete psychopath with nightmarish visuals. Every True Believer will have their jaw dropped for the whole film looking at all the different easter eggs scattered around this masterpiece. If I only had one complaint, is that the visuals, while stunning to look at, can get jarring at times to the point where it is hard to keep track of the action on screen, gorgeous as it may be. I can honestly say this is a must-see not just for superhero fans, not just for Spider-Man fans, not just for animation fans, but for anyone just looking for a fun film at the cinema. Nuff Said!

Definitely not your typical Spider-Man movie

"Superhero Movie", "Comic Book Movie", "Spider-Man Movie".
when you hear this the only picture might come to your mind is A STORY ABOUT THE HERO WHO IS GONNA KICK THE VILLAIN'S ASS BY THE END. let me tell you, going to this movie throw all those expectations out.

Actually all those labels I mentioned earlier apply to this film, in the most hardcore fashion you can imagine, and way more. It is the best in all those categories in every possible way and also elevates itself to something even more moving, more interesting and more compelling.

By the time you get to the third act it gets dark, dramatic, suspenseful, mysterious, nervous and full of twists and turns in a very The-Silence-of-the-Lambs way. And I think might be a bit hard for kids to digest. The stakes are way higher that makes the first film INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE tonally naive compared to this.

And don't get me started on the animation. the richest and the most glamorous you have ever witnessed, I bet. and certainly can not be topped by anyone but these filmmakers themselves. The different styles of animation is not meant to show off (at least not primarily) but to reflect the emotions and the story every time. You will have to go through it frame by frame to absorb all the beauty and the details put in it. also the music by genius Daniel Pemberton elevates it to the highest level.

There should be a campaign promoting this film to hopefully get various Oscar nominations (beside the best animated feature, which will win undoubtedly. RIP other nominees); like best picture, best adopted screenplay and best score. Anyway, this is the ultimate film, hands down. besides a few fan service-y parts, which for me held the movie back at some points (but I can forget about them), everything else hits hard in this film. I hope there were more filmmakers like Lord and Miller working today, and I hope Disney and Pixar take ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE as the punch in the balls they deserved so they progress and make good movies again. If the third part BEYOND THE SPIDER-VESRE is as good and surprising as this, then ladies and gentlemen we will have one of the greatest trilogies of all time. Don't hesitate to watch, as the director Justin K. Thompson puts it, THE MOST EXPENSIVE INDEPENDENT ART-HOUSE MOVIE OF ALL TIME.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Good movie but vastly inferior to the first.

Unfortunately if you liked Spider pig or the other spidermans from the last movie, you won’t be getting them here despite the movie introducing a plethora of characters who don’t live up to the last movie’s spiderman noire/pigs

The movie still maintains that signature style from the first movie although sometimes the colors and flashing lights are a bit chaotic and the movie too heavily focuses on needless action/movement scenes. The tone of the styles also varies widely, some making my eyes hurt. Someone who has epilepsy should 100% not watch this movie. At times I felt like a horde of unicorns were vomiting in my face. Some action scenes go on for way too long with awkward comedic dialogue in between like this first time where they chase the villain who can make holes. It just dragged on and on and just had so many one line quips from this hole guy that just fell flat. I kept waiting for some sort of conclusion or wrap-up but nope, this like everything else in this movie is not concluded. Don’t get me wrong, the action scenes are great but it comes at the expense of the characters. Characters like ‘afro lady’ spiderman and punk spiderman did not connect like spiderpig, noire, etc. Spiderpunk would make cringy lines for modern 2023 audiences along the lines of ‘capitalism bad!’ And afro lady seemed to have only existed so the movie could fill their diversity quota since she had 0 personality and didnt act, dress, or look like anything attempting to be a ‘spider something’. They werent terrible but compared to the contrasting personalities of spider pig and spider noire, these characters just felt uninspired.

The end action scene of the film, which can hardly be considered a ‘climax’ unfortunately doesnt make too much sense as it says that it is canon that miles father must die, however the film completely ignores that spiderman’s uncle already died. Spiderman canonically must have some loved one die and they establish this in the first movie too, it does not need to be a captain, so it was awkward and contradicted itself when they tried to shoehorn in that ‘oh yeah miles, your dad will die because he is a captain even though your uncle already died’. What was the point of showing spider gwen and every other spiderman’s dead loved one if you are going to introduce a new concept that two loved ones must die? Why didnt spider gwen care if her captain dad died? Why is it ok that gwen just spontaneously leave her timeline and that has no timeline consequences? Why are all of mile’s spider friends suddenly uncaring a-holes who would try to stop their friend from saving his own dad? I like that peter parker has a baby now but he’s really swinging his toddler around as he does extremely dangerous stuff when this movie establishes over and over the theme of parents protecting their kids. Another awkward addition to this movie for a few attempts to make the audience go ‘awww haha the baby does spiderman stuff too’

Worst of all, the movie opens up three huge plot points and doesnt care to conclude anything! Ok ok we get another movie but at least attempt to finish something. The cliffhanger ending felt like it belonged in a TV show, not a movie that I’m watching in theaters. The movie doesnt even have anything remotely close to a climax. It just ends. When ‘to be continued’ flashed on the screen, i could hear ‘what!?’ And ‘really…’ from people in the theaters. There are good and bad ways to do cliffhangers. The empire strikes back had a cliffhanger but it still had a climax, and still concluded itself in someway to finish this chapter of star wars. Spiderman did not do this and it was just unsatisfactory. They tease a ‘final battle’ w spider pig, noire, etc and it was such a cop out and made me wonder why all of them only decide to show us at the very end. Was every character from the first movie really so indifferent to mile’s problem after they risked their lives to help him in the first movie? If yes, why deteriorate these established characters? Because the writers wrote themselves in a hole and needed to explain why everyone wouldnt just help spiderman, or why any spiderman, many who are pure hearted do-gooders, wouldnt help another spiderman save his dad.

I am saying a lot of critical stuff here but only because i love the first movie so much. A special hats off to the excellent soundtrack although sometimes i felt like the movie was made to fit the sound track and not the other way around

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

What to say about the characters, very well worked, where each one is faced with making difficult decisions that must be faced in the most dangerous way. The high point of wonders here for me comes late in the 2nd act when Miles and his mom talk alone. The mom is the most successful animated character in this film. The film goes on for another 20 minutes of wonderful lyrical visuals. Then I lost track of the plot almost completely. How a multiverse is affected by tangled webs of various Spider-people didn't work as an emotional thru-line for me. ANIMATION JAZZ returns! Animation nerds will know many effects here hark back to animation experiments in the 1950s-1960s of John and Faith Hubley et al. Generally these old pretentious visual effects are put to much better story use here--if several times overdone to the point of sensory overload. DC comics fans will note the Green Lantern Corps clearly inspired the Spider-person Corps here. Be ready for several jolting new spider-personas. I liked their choices. This is another movie which would play longer in theaters if 20 minutes of bloat was cut out; in this case, from end of 2nd act. Expand

I thought the first movie was groundbreaking, inventive and tightly scripted. The first 20 minutes of the second movie is sublime, then the opening credits arrive and it's mostly more of the first movie dialed up to the max. The pacing is a little uneven, the first film had a great flow but in this the pacing is overly slow in places and drawn out and frantic in others especially as it rushes to a cliffhanger ending. I wish they had finished the story in a single movie rather than going for the cash-grab route by kind of forcing people to watch the next movie to see the ending. They could have finished the episode with better pacing, such as by chopping out the party scenes which were just repeating plot points that had already been made earlier. The sound in the IMAX screening was perfect, in the Dolby Atmos screening it was overly loud and caused some of the dialogue to be too be difficult to hear in places. Full credit to the animators, they have created another visual masterpiece, with gorgeous design again elevating the medium to new levels, each world is unique yet they all feel cohesive. I rate the first film a perfect 10, this one with a tighter script and the whole story in a single film would have been a 10 again, but overall its not quite as good as the first. I will definitely buy it on 4k UHD to watch at home again. Expand

I was thrilled at it getting a sequel but was slightly worried it won't live up to the first one. Is Across the Spider-Verse a worthy sequel or one universe that should've been closed?

Firstly, let's get the obvious out of the way. The animation is SPECTACULAR! The animation and art style changing depending on what universe the characters are in or even what universe the characters are from was a great creative choice. The way the characters move, the vibrancy and the colours of the world are so gorgeous and beautifully crafted. The action scenes are thrilling and exciting while also being well-choreographed. The soundtrack is still phenomenal here as well, with a special mention of Spider-Gwen's theme. In terms of story, Spider-Gwen has a bigger focus this time. We get more exploration of her backstory and her struggles, such as loneliness and guilt. Her character arc is one of the great highlights of this film. Miles Morales is still of course the main focus as well and has his struggles too. He is starting to experience the "Spider-Man" problem of balancing his own life with the responsibility of Spider-man. The sequel continues his arc of trying to become his own hero and it is still very compelling. The chemistry between both Miles and Gwen is strong with their relationship being one of the things I enjoyed. Spider-Man 2099 returns from the post-credit of the previous film to a major role in this entry. I like that he is the one Spider-Man who doesn't joke like the others as it furthers the contrast between him and Miles. The way he is animated feels more inhuman as well which makes him significantly frightening. He isn't the main villain though, that comes to a character called The Spot. He is a very interesting villain as he comes off as very goofy and silly. His origin is also a bit ridiculous. Despite all that, the directors managed to make him come off as very threatening with how they used his abilities. It is impressive that made a lame-looking character be that menacing. The returning voice cast such as Shameik Moore as Miles, Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen, Brian Tyree Henry as Jeff, Luna Lauren Vélez as Rio Morales, and Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker is still great here. Oscar Isaac also returns as Spider-Man 2099 and he is awesome. In terms of the new voice cast, Jason Schwartzman is terrific as The Spot with how he portrays both the silly and serious side of the antagonist. Karan Soni is funny as Spider-Man India and Daniel Kaluuya is quite cool as Spider-Punk. Despite the multiverse theme, the information dumps never become too much. They are written in an understandable way that the audience can still digest. The humour is still genuinely funny and there wasn't a joke that didn't land

In terms of issues, I do find the second act a little bit too long. The second act is mostly about the family drama of Miles Morales and it does go on for quite a while. It doesn't help that the importance of this drama doesn't come into play in this film but most likely the next one, so it doesn't even have a proper payoff. Additionally, the sound mixing can be a bit off. It is sometimes a little difficult to hear dialogue during scenes with loud music or action. This is especially noticeable in the beginning with the drums feeling way more loud than the dialogue. This is also very clearly a part 1 film. It ends at a point where it feels like it is about to enter the final act but it just ends before it does. If the aim was to make me desperate for the next movie then it succeeded!

Overall, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is a very worthy sequel that builds upon everything that made the first great. The multiverse is such an overdone thing but this film still somehow makes it feel fresh! If the final movie in this trilogy is as good in quality as both this and the first movie, we might have one of the best trilogies in cinema history! The 3rd film can't come soon enough because I am dying to watch it!

So much creativity in every shot, a very entertaining villain, tons of references that don't overstay their welcome, and at the center of it all, a deep and powerful story dealing with the complexities of family life and the costs that come with being spider man. Even if you have no interest whatsoever in superheroes, this is one that you cannot miss out on. Just be prepared for an abrupt cliffhanger ending if you plan on seeing it. The theater I was in definitely didn't appreciate that very much, so I wanted to warn people ahead of time. Title: "Across the Spider-Verse: A Thrilling Sequel Packed with Stunning Animation and Unpredictable Twists"

Rating: ★★★★½ (4.5/5)

Note: This review is based on a second viewing of the film.

"After watching 'Across the Spider-Verse' for the second time, I couldn't help but appreciate the film even more. With the initial viewing leaving me in awe, I immediately booked another ticket to delve deeper into its intricacies. Now, armed with a newfound understanding, I am ready to share my thoughts on this remarkable sequel."

"Across the Spider-Verse" returns with an enchanting second installment that will leave audiences captivated and eagerly anticipating the next chapter. This film is a testament to the creative brilliance of its team, as it delivers a balanced blend of introspective storytelling, breathtaking animation, and surprising plot twists.

Upon revisiting the movie, it becomes evident that the deliberate, slower pace of the first half provides a deeper understanding of Spider Gwen's journey, both before and after the events of the original film. It also offers a glimpse into Miles' current endeavors while introducing us to The Spot, the formidable "villain of the week." However, once the stage is set and the second half unfolds, the film accelerates into hyperdrive, bombarding the audience with a whirlwind of revelations and new elements.

The storytelling in "Across the Spider-Verse" is a masterclass in keeping viewers on the edge of their seats. It expertly teases us with clues about what's to come, only to subvert our expectations entirely. The desire for more is amplified, leaving us craving the third film and eagerly speculating about its mysteries. This sequel succeeds in leaving an indelible mark on the audience's imagination.

The animation in this movie is a spectacle to behold. With meticulous attention to detail and a seamless blend of various art styles, the visual experience surpasses that of its predecessor. The transitions between different backgrounds and the inclusion of comic sound effects further enhance the dynamic nature of the scenes. Every frame is a work of art, a testament to the care and passion poured into the animation process.

The voice acting in "Across the Spider-Verse" is exemplary, with Shameik Moore reprising his role as Miles Morales and Luna Lauren Vélez shining as Rio Morales. Their performances inject authenticity and emotion into the characters, grounding them in relatable struggles and triumphs. The ensemble cast delivers a captivating performance, further enhancing the film's impact.

The core of the story lies in exploring the inner turmoil of each character and the weight of the choices they must make in the name of the greater good. Miles, in particular, grapples with the dual identity of a gifted student and a superhero. These thematic elements add depth to the narrative, reminding us that even heroes face internal conflicts.

In conclusion, "Across the Spider-Verse" is a thrilling sequel that builds upon its predecessor's success. It exhibits outstanding animation, compelling storytelling, and memorable voice acting. While the film's pacing might feel uneven at times, the overall experience is a triumph. It sets the stage perfectly for the highly anticipated third installment, leaving audiences eagerly awaiting its arrival. With a rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars, this film is a must-watch for fans of the Spider-Verse and lovers of visually stunning and emotionally resonant cinema.

A cinematic masterpiece. Let's hope they won't ruin everything with Beyond the Spiderverse.

How can it surpass the already excellent original in every conceivable way? How can it juggle dozens of well-written characters, numerous story-lines, various visual styles, genuinely funny jokes and dramatic moments that actually work? How can it tell a cohesive complete story, develop on the first movie's plot lines, and set up the third one so thrillingly, while making 2 and a half hours pass by like mere minutes?

Well, apparently, it just can, and I'm grateful to the team behind it for pulling this off. Can't wait to see Beyond the Spider-Verse.

Comes with a complementary great soundtrack, much like the first one, by the way.
