I've been a Sonic fan for almost 10 years and I decided not to trust my intuition and give this movie a chance even though I knew perfectly that it won't be good. I couldn't believe I refrained from leaving on the 15th minute of the screening. I stayed with the hope that eventually the movie would get better. I went with two friends of mine and every 3 minutes we were commenting on almost every scene with disgust and the cringy absurdities. My father who still says the red Sonic, sadly, is much more informed than the people who made the movie. Everything starts with a scene, which has nothing to do with everything we know about Sonic's childhood. Sonic is one of a kind and was raised by an OWL?? Then some characters appear similar to the Knuckles clan who attack Sonic and he has to escape to the world of humans. Why? This clan was ancient, centuries before Sonic was born and also they wouldn't attack him without a purpose. They do it for money and Sonic doesn't seem very wealthy. And according to the movie, they want his superpower, which is an absurd notion since they can't steal it. And his power is ELECTRICITY! Since when? So many games show that electricity is even dangerous for Sonic! He can stop the power in a whole city and make explosions with electric waves. Then, even more hilarious, we see Sonic stopping time. Yes he may be fast but he can't do such a thing. And at the same time, with all these exaggerated powers, Sonic would completely lose them and instead of spin dash and destroy robots, as he has always been doing without a problem, we see him absolutely helpless so the human policeman has to fight f while driving a car at high speed. Looks like the creators of the movie haven't understood the hedgehog's powers at all. He runs fast but it doesn't mean that his whole body is fast. Here's proof - when he runs, his arms fly behind his body. During the whole movie they say that Sonic is lonely and doesn't have a single friend. Just because they didn't think of adding even one more Sonic character. I thought that the movie would be fine because the creators took into consideration the fans' opinion and they changed the disgusting first design. After all there was almost nothing to please us the true Sonic fans. So I don't know who the movie was made for, since my friends who didn't even know who Sonic was, left disappointed too. For years we fans have been saying that we don't want the other characters to be neglected. There are 50+ Sonic characters and the screenplay forgot about all of them and made Sonic a desperate loner. A human policeman is the only character we get,and of course Eggman, as always. Before I went to the movie I expected to see Tails, because of the rumors I had heard. I found out that he really did appear but after the ending credits, in a scene which is a spoiler for the next movie. Every time Sonic was complaining about not having a best friend I had a hard time not shouting "TAILS". If the movie had been made by Sonic fans, it would have been much better. I can't imagine how SEGA approved it, obviously they cared just for the money. To make things worse, Sonic's personality was completely changed. He has always been a brave, daring leader, ready for anything and in the movie he is like a tender scared kitten, lonely and desperate. I can't believe they made Sonic so pathetic. He might be cute but that's not him. The Sonic I've known the one in the movie are two completely different characters. Instead of being cool he is helpless and needing protection. He is even stupid. The people in the movie likewise acted inadequately like big fools. Most of the time Eggman didn't look like himself either. I just can't imagine the evil genius, who makes perfect robots to be driving a truck. And Sonic the fastest creature alive, driving a car and being scared that he won't be able to escape. Why? He is so fast. Why does he need a car? As for Eggman - how hard was it to remember his name? In the scene where they asked him about his name, he said: My name is DOCTOR. Ivo is a hard name, yes. Actually, there wasn't anything special about the Sonic movie except for the name. It was too much of a parody and the mistakes were numerous, there were not any familiar settings, music, the easter eggs were hardly enough. Its wasn't even funny and I am a person who laughs easily. Why spend so much money to achieve a result which will not please any true Sonic fan? The only part of the movie which made me happy was the SEGA intro nut it was so short. The movie didn't convey the magic of Sonic, as true fans understand it. Sadly it won't renew kids' interest to this character. We won't be seeing kids running around pretending to be Sonic. If there is ever a sequel, please recruit people who care about Sonic as consultants. It is pointless to make a movie about a beloved character if the people involved do not have the slightest idea what's essential for this.… Expand

This film adaptation of Sega's most well-known video game franchise is firmly placed in "okay" ground; neither terrible nor amazing.

The plot here is that Sonic (who in the film looks mostly good, although his eyes are separated which is a letdown); an alien hedgehog who has the power of super speed, escapes to Earth for his own safety, then lives a solitary life. However, a series of events lead to him being discovered and pursued by the evil Dr. Robotnik, who wants to use his super speed powers. Thus, Sonic teams up with a cop to escape Robotnik and get back to safety.

First of all, I feel that putting Sonic on Earth was a missed opportunity plot-wise that makes the film as a whole seem rather generic and uninventive. A plot that saw him visiting more of the vibrant areas of the games would have made for a more interesting and engaging film. Instead, we're left with a rather generic "normal guy helps mischievous talking animal" story.

In addition to that, the film clearly sees children as its main audience. Plot developments are very predictable, and the injection of a specific current pop culture trend (not once, but twice) is in my opinion a bad move that will cause the film to age quickly.

However, there are good points. Robotnik is played very well, seeming faithful to the games while putting a new spin on the character. The use of rings as portals is a nice touch. Sonic's quips are generally funny. Emotional moments, while predictable, seem genuine.

Ultimately, this is fine to watch. It's not bad, but it's not particularly good either. Still, I think the Sonic franchise has more film potential, and I hope that's tapped into with a potential sequel.… Expand

Overall Sonic was a fun watch with my son. Cant say it surprised us in any particular way, just the standard 'alien meets human' family movie shenanigans. We all thought Assassin Creed was going to destroy the curse of terrible video game adaptations, but this blue hedgehog sure did.

You know what stuck with me the most was how Sonic says he has watched the 1994 action movie 'Speed' loads ofWe all thought Assassin Creed was going to destroy the curse of terrible video game adaptations, but this blue hedgehog sure did.

You know what stuck with me the most was how Sonic says he has watched the 1994 action movie 'Speed' loads of times, so does that mean he witnessed Dennis Hopper getting decapitated on endless repeat? Or how about Beth Grant being run over by a bus? Makes you think sometimes.

Anywhere...not a great movie, but man this could have been so much worst. I am glad the studios listened to fans and changed that revolting character design on Sonic. It is just too bad that the animates were laid off after the studio was closed. Yikes.

Jim Carry, even at the age of 58, has not lost that chaotic energy. Robotnik's dance scene was easily the highlight. What is more impressive is Carry improvised the dance scene and recommended the song "Where Evil Grows". James Marsden sure does love cgi animals. I guess this completes the trilogy. 'Enchanted', 'Hop', and now 'Sonic'. Still likable and talented though. So yeah, it's an average family adventure comedy that never failed to entertain. This is coming from a guy who is not a diehard fan of the character or game series, but still found some enjoyment out of it.… Expand

If you want a simple but entertaining film and imbued with nostalgia for those who ever played a Sonic game, well here's an option.

If you're looking for something else, you will not find it here and incidentally you're deceiving yourself.

Although it only remains to ask if the film had still worked with the public and the critics without the change of image that Sonic had. Because as far as I know there was no change in the story.

This movie is a ok kids movie. The problem I have is that I didn't find anything in it to be funny. The last trailer I seen made it look more like a comedy. None of the jokes I found funny at all. I honestly don't understand the massive hype surrounding this movie. It wasn't great or terrible. It was just kind of meh. I think Sonic fans could get a kick out of it, but I'm not really sure since the movie had barely anything to do with the actual Sonic games. The rest of this film can be marked up to poorly veiled marketing (seriously, stop talking about the Olive Garden) and nonsense driven plot points. Without spoiling anything, in the trailer it reveals Sonic being able to be so fast that he can take the time to yawn and tap his foot when dozens of missiles are aimed directly at him yet he is able to be shot by a tranquilizer dart. Take that "logic" and apply it to the rest of the script and you'll understand what kind of writing we're dealing with.… Expand

A very generic plot, the title character plays what is basically a support role, with a movie focused on him, but not about him. The real main character is the Generic White Everyman, Tom. Jim Carrey does pretty well, but the screenwriters tried way to hard to make his character "plausible" in the world, and all it did was distract from what makes Robotnik great. All his gadget have this kind of "realism" to them, which wasn't really welcome. This movie is made up of 3 elements that all work better on their own.
I don't really recommend this, it fails to deliver anything beyond what you'd expect from a Generic IconicCharacter Cash-Grab.… Expand

I was really excited for this movie, especially after the huge amount of praise given to it on Twitter and from YouTubers. I finally got around to watching it, and I have very mixed opinions. I finally got around to watching it, and I have very mixed opinions. Sonic is just really, really annoying- I expected something more like the Sonic Boom TV show Sonic. Instead, he's just annoying and not very likeable. The movie is very obviously aimed at kids, but there is some fan service in there and I can appreciate that. My favourite scene out of the entire movie has to be the bar fight scene, that was really funny. I really feel like the movie doesn't go into much detail about who Dr Robotnik actually is and his origin story. Or why Sonic refers to him as Eggman. There really isn't much substance storywise, which is why I hope we get a prequel or sequel as the post-credit scene hints at. Overall, major disappointment, but a pretty decent film for a video game movie.… Expand

About robotnik... i would not talk, but is all about jim carrey being kim jarrey not robotnik, and well i like carrey but i don't think this represent robotnik, hope they fix this in the second movie.

Post credits scene give me hopes

The plot was a cliché yet somehow it got even emptier.
Good that there's James Marsden, and Jim Carrey's over exaggerated performance actually made this film kind of funny.
Overall, don't spend a penny on this.

First Ben Schwartz as Sonic I’m so used to Roger Craig Smith as the Blue Blur he brings the entertainment that you only see when you feed your child so much sugar that he just runs around that a crazy person. The special effects look great finally the original design of Sonic looked horrible and the director listened to us and redesigned the character and did a great job. James Marston has a thing for CGI animals right because he was in Hop and now this but he did a great job. But of course everyone is saying about Jim Carrey and he was amazing it’s amazing to see him being a funny crazy dude again. Over all Sonic the Hedgehog is the best video game movie I have ever seen and I need a sequel go watch this movie in theaters now.… Expand

Literally the best movie ever created. Have the best jokes and times for jokes. The punchline of everything is just so based. Do you know? It's like i'm consuming the masterpiece of God. At this point did we really expect critics to like it? Ofc not, they don't like any film unless it's really violent or full of s*x scenes.

I've been a Sonic fan practically my whole life, I've experienced it's missteps like Sonic 2006 (underrated game, just saying, but I'm aware how bad it did) and Sonic boom rise of lyric and it's successes (like Sonic Unleashed, Sonic generations and the latest Sonic Frontiers). Did this adaption of the iconic blue blur disappoint? No. The story is charming and great to follow, there are countless game references that will make any fan fall in love and Sonic's final design was amazing and not a monstrosity like the original design we got back when they showed the first trailer back in mid 2019. Jim Carrey did a great job as Dr Robotnik, which was to be expected. Fans will love it, kids will love it, the whole family will love it.
My only criticism is the lack of music from the games. Sonic Unleashed's Endless Possibilities would have fitted very well in this film and the narrative.… Expand
