When I saw the first trailer for this movie I thought this movie would be horrible. After they announced the rework on Sonic I figured I would at least see it since they were doing the change. I don't know why the professional critics panned this movie. The "official" critics are completely clueless nowadays when it comes to movies like this. They use all sorts of flowery "smart guy" language to explain all of their pompous reasons why this movie apparently is garbage.

If you're a Sonic fan, or just a parent looking to take their kids to a fun movie, go see it. It's funny, heart warming, and is solid in it's execution of a decent and straight forward plot. It takes elements from the games and manages to find fun ways to use them in a movie set in a real world.

Don't listen to the"professional"critics that don't know how to just take a movie for what it is any more and have fun with it. The people involved with this film knocked it out of the park. Go see it.… Expand

Sonic was a passable movie. The story is ok and unrealistic. But since it is about a video game mascot, you have to accept it for what it is. It's fast and the slow motion scenes are fun to watch. The acting is really good. I especially like Carey's performance. The humor is fair. It will give you many smiles but no hard laugh. There are holes everywhere in that type of film, and it's surely something that is harder to accept. Example: the role and decisions of the US army. I give it 72%. Maybe not the best movie, but for a video game film, it's a huge step forward in terms of quality.… Expand

Sonic the Hedgehog. Supersonic movie! I was waiting for this film for a very long time and therefore went to it for the second time today and I think I will do it again! This film is special for me because it is an adaptation of the gameSonic the Hedgehog. Supersonic movie! This film is special for me because it is an adaptation of the game series that you have been playing since 6 years. Sonic is amazing, Donut Lord performed by James Marsden is a cool, kind guy and of course a magnificent Jim Carrey who, with his charisma and humor, shows who the real Dr. Robotnik. I will really hope and wait for the continuation, especially when there are two hints at the end of the film.… Expand

I cant think of a better video game to movie adaptation in my life. I don't want to review this movie the same way I review other movies as this is a kids film, clearly aimed at kids.

Video game movies tend to be horrible. The only remotely decent video game movie has been Detective Pikachu which was notI don't want to review this movie the same way I review other movies as this is a kids film, clearly aimed at kids.

Video game movies tend to be horrible. The only remotely decent video game movie has been Detective Pikachu which was not great but a step in the right direction. Likewise, Sonic the Hedgehog continues this step in the right direction but is not great. The movie itself is an enjoyable time and will keep you having a good time for its 90 minute runtime.

I am not a huge fan of Sonic but I have played a fair amount of Sonic games to know enough about him. I can with confidence say that this will no doubt satisfy Sonic fans. It feels really clear that the director and people behind this movie actually care about Sonic. This movie in no way feels like a cash grab (especially considering they delayed the movie and redesigned Sonic to satisfy fans). Some of the things I enjoyed in this movie include Ben Schwartz as Sonic who completely embodies the Personality of Sonic. Additionally, the other best part of this movie is Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik. Seeing Jim Carrey give a performance that is reminiscent of his earlier days was as enjoyable as you expect it to be. James Marsden also does a good job and delivers some good chemistry with Sonic. Overall, the human characters are actually all okay which is surprising as usually in movies with CGI characters as focus; the human characters tend to be really bad (looking at you Godzilla King of monsters). The action scenes are fun and enjoyable, especially when Sonic does his slow mo scenes.

The movie has flaws but it might not really matter that much considering it is a movie aimed at kids but adults who grew up with Sonic will no doubt watch this. The story is very simplistic but there are so many things that happen in the movie that don't seem to have any consequences. For example, the amount of destruction happening seems to result in no consequences. The movie also uses a lot of cliches that have occurred in so many movies by now, it makes the movie very predictable. The movie also has so many weird product placement that are so blatant that it genuinely makes you wonder (you're going to come out of this movie thinking about Olive Garden for sure...). Finally, kids might not enjoy this movie cause at the Cinema I was at; there was a kid who couldn't focus or bother keeping their eyes on the movie so that might be saying something.

In the end, Sonic fans are going to enjoy this movie, people who grew up in the 90s are going to enjoy this movie, fans of Jim Carrey are definitely going to enjoy this movie, and kids/families are going to enjoy this movie (most kids anyway). You are going to come out of this movie having a good time and isn't that the most important thing for a kids movie anyways?… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Jim Carrey's Robotnik was one of my favorite parts of this movie. It felt like he truly enjoyed being on set, which made him more fun and entertaining to watch. I really like sonic in the movie, too. He just has this nice personality that I really like. However, it felt like he had a mental breakdown every 10 minutes towards the beginning of the times. Donut Lord was also fun to watch in the movie. I can't put my finger on it, but he just emits this feeling that I like.

However, Sonic flosses twice, and he **** himself. The flossing didn't bother me as much as it should have, but the fart joke was uncalled for. Also, some parts just sounded cheesy.

Overall, this movie was almost everything a Sonic fan could have wanted in a Sonic movie.… Expand

Not a great movie by any stretch of the imagination but one that leaves you satisfied. Jim Carrey acts exactly how you would expect him to and it really works for the most part. Had a lot of fun watching this movie. It has some really funny moments and you grow to actually care about Sonic and the rest of the cast. You can tell Carrey's having a lot of fun in this role. He definitely knows what this movie is and he fully embraces the eccentric mad scientist role of Robotnik, coming through with 0 cringe-inducing jokes, lines, or scenes. I cannot say the same for Sonic or James Marsden's cop character. If you plan on seeing this, you will need to fully turn off your brain to enjoy it. Characters regularly make decisions and statements that don't make any sense and Sonic% speed is underutilized at several points purely in service of the plot. In its defense, the movie absolutely does not ask to be taken seriously. Unfortunately that still doesn't stop huge logical inconsistencies from breaking the illusion and immersion of it all. Sonic The Hedgehog is a dumb fun romp that doesn't quite overstay its welcome.… Expand

I saw the SANIC movie in theaters... And I was pleasantly surprised! I was going in thinking this was going to be another cringey "Cartoon characters from my childhood are thrown into live action, modern society and (attempts at) hilarityI saw the SANIC movie in theaters... And I was pleasantly surprised! I was going in thinking this was going to be another cringey "Cartoon characters from my childhood are thrown into live action, modern society and (attempts at) hilarity ensue." Similar to "Alvin and the Chipmunks" and "The Smurfs." And Sonic was KINDA like one of those movies, but it was by far the most well executed of that kind of film.

“Sonic the Hedgehog” has a bit more charm than the aforementioned movies and it’s a movie that both a veteran Sonic fan and a newcomer can enjoy! Jim Carrey was excellent as Doctor Robotnik, it felt like I was watching him in his wacky 90’s days! James Marsden was actually pretty funny, not to mention REALLY fun to look at!… Expand

I have to say, they did a great job at portraying him in this movie as the blue hedgehog the true fans know. His origin story is a fresh good way to start things off in the "live action" aspect since they had to add the real people. I could actually see this as becoming Canon to the video games in a sense, which brings me to my next point. Everything in the movie reflected little things within thevideo games as well. As a fan of Sonic, I would have to say that the little Easter eggs that popped into this one were very refreshing and appreciated. The team working on this did great. As for my next point, I'm giving it a 10 because the people listened to the fans and made a great movie that I believe any Sonic fan would appreciate. As far as a movie goes however, I'd have to say it's an 8. It's fun and never boring, that's for sure. It also had great funny parts to it as well. My last point I want to make is Dr robotnik. He was great and everything I would expect from him. Also, with that being said, although this is live action, I actually forgot it was not fully animated due to the actors great performances and becoming "animated" themselves. As for my review, I hope everyone takes this weekend to see it and support it due to the studio listening to it's fans. In conclusion, I enjoyed my experience thoroughly.… Expand

If you're a SEGA fanboy or 7 years old, then you'll probably enjoy it. If you're neither of these things then it's a crass, pointless and ultimately cringe-worthy waste of time.

I went into this with low expectations. After watching that first trailer I thought the beloved Sega mascot was going to have a lot more working against him in this film than just a disturbing new look. Yet, I went to see it anyways out ofI went into this with low expectations. After watching that first trailer I thought the beloved Sega mascot was going to have a lot more working against him in this film than just a disturbing new look. Yet, I went to see it anyways out of appreciation for the studio's decision to admit their mistake and redesign the character. Something I believe they deserve to be rewarded at the box-office for. I ended up walking away pleasantly surprised. Sonic gets a superhero origin story. One with a surprisingly complex and rather bizarre supporting lore. A pretty good job was done crafting a narrative fit for theatre screens out of a game series that's not exactly known for having riveting writing. The titular hedgehog establishes his place in the world, meets his archnemesis, and even sets up a few sequels without any major hitches. The only things I can see that might anger purists are Sonic now being called an alien and his new electric powers. I highly doubt the outcry will be that large though.

You can tell this cute, funny adventure is aimed primarily at kids. Although I have heard it said there are some raunchy jokes. They either went completely over my head or weren't as egregious to me as they were to others. So personally I still say this is very family-friendly. It is something parents might want to consider though.

Yet, none of this is to say that the movie isn't still very juvenile. In fact its childish nature is probably the biggest knock one could have against it. Portions of the humor fail to connect with anyone outside of the youngest members of the audience. I mean there's a fart gag for crying out loud.

The thing that makes me more excited for a sequel to this as opposed to, say, Detective Pikachu (despite that being the better movie) are the human characters. The thought of having to put up with Justice Smith and Kathryn Newton again in order to see more of Reynolds-chu being adorable and quippy makes me ill. I could deal with Marsden and Sumpter's return however, as they were genuinely likable and never irritating.

Really the only thing that has me worried about a potential follow-up is Carrey. Never really been a fan of his particular brand of comedy. He was remarkably restrained here though so I found him tolerable. However, if he's let off the leash in a sequel I could see that really turning me off.

Overall, this turned out much better than history would have dictated. As much as that redesign undoubtedly helped make much of the film easier to swallow than it otherwise would have been, it really owes its success to adopting the modern superhero movie formula. Which proves to still be a winning format even in this extremely child-oriented state. It is particularly indebted to the X-Men series, which you can see during Sonic's high-speed antics where the world remains frozen around him just like Quicksilver. Sonic the Hedgehog might not blow any minds, but it is another sign that the infamous videogame movie curse is ending, if not already over.

The acting was decent, there were some genuine laughs, and I wasn't bored and regretting my decision to go see it. By no means is it a great movie, but for a video game movie clearly aimed at a kid audience... it was OK. And an "OK" video game movie is about the biggest compliment you can give to studios, actors, directors, etc. that take the plunge with this genre of movie.… Expand

The positives:
-The visual effects and everything were pretty good, including Sonic's more faithful redesign.

-Sonic and the rest of the cast are very entertaining, although clearly Ben Schwartz's Sonic and Jim Carrey's Dr. Robotnik are more interesting to me than the other characters (for obvious reasons).
-The origin story of Sonic adds something new to him that really makes you feel for him during both his best and worst moments throughout the adventure.

The negatives:
-Some characters either don't have a legitimate reason to be there or feel like they have too much going on. Carrey as Robotnik especially fits the latter, although I haven't seen much of Jim Carrey in a long while, so that may just be me.
-The plot, while still pretty decent, is just as cliched and predictable--if not rushed at times--as some critics have said. And very rarely, if ever at all, are the tropes involved played around with. This movie needed either an additional re-write or two, or at least been given a longer running time (not like Avengers: Endgame, but maybe more like the first Avengers).

Overall, this movie was a lot of fun for me. I'd say this is definitely worth seeing with the kids.… Expand

Definitely a fun movie! I really enjoyed it, the CGI was great, good amount of humor for kids and adults, chemistry between characters was great as well. No spoilers but a sequel would be awesome and would get my money.

Der Sonic Film war gut. Nicht super gut und auch nicht scheiße. Ich habe die Nummer 7 gewählt, da es wirklich nicht langweilig war und es gab sogar witzige Szene. I can't believe I saw this movie. I always wanted a Sonic the Hedgehog movie since I was a kid and now it finally came true. I absolutely love it! The jokes, the characters, and the references to the games was spot on. Also that end creditsI can't believe I saw this movie. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sonic the Hedgehog is boring. The plot has a terrible pace, which I would chock up to the introduction of elements that are not given adequate time to stew and thus feel shallow or, in some cases, just plain confusing. Why do they bother creating an original “mother figure” character in the form of some owl just to kill her off after three minutes and never mention her again? When she created the portal to send Sonic to Earth so he would be safe from the army that was after him, why didn’t she go with? The army wasn’t after her and she got taken out by a single arrow, so am I to believe she held them ALL back so Sonic could escape? How did Sonic’s human companions surprise him by redecorating their attic to resemble the cave he grew up in while he was hiding on Earth? Sonic never mentions it to anyone. When did they have time to go retrieve Sonic’s belongings without him knowing? How does Tails show up on Earth looking for Sonic when it is stated by the owl mother that Sonic has to stay hidden? I get that he goes out anyway, but I can’t imagine he had much time to make friends given his situation. Besides, Sonic is sent to Earth as a young child and we aren’t even given a glimpse of Tails before he shows up at the end in a bit of poorly implemented fan service. So the plot stinks, but the biggest injustice is that the writers take absolutely zero advantage of the property they’re writing for. Whether you’re a fan of Sonic games or Sonic memes, there is little here to excite. Ben Schwartz does say “Gotta go fast” in a rather anticlimactic fashion, and they do briefly show that terrible Sonic drawing but, beyond those things, we just get references to modern culture. Sonic flosses and makes a joke about Amazon and Find My Phone. In a more canonical sense, the movie pulls very little inspiration from Sonic’s history and is too wrapped up with presenting its own stupid ideas. Sonic can travel to different places, be they cities or planets, by using rings to create portals. Why not replace those with the Chaos Emeralds, which have been used in established canon to enable teleportation by way of Chaos Control? Sonic loses one of his quills early on, which Robotnik finds and uses to enhance his own machinery. Why not use the Chaos Emeralds, which Robotnik uses throughout established canon to power up his machinery? Sonic has this “ultimate form” type thing where he wants to protect his friends so he gets all epic and flashy and has lightning and junk and becomes super powerful. Thing is, Sonic already has a super form. It’s called Super Sonic and he attains this form by, say it with me now, using the god damn Chaos Emeralds. This team of inept writers utterly fail to understand what Sonic fans of all kinds enjoy about the franchise.

Also, the main dude and his girlfriend adopt Sonic as their weird blue alien son at the end of the movie. I don’t remember anyone’s name because they’re all extremely forgettable characters.

Jim Carrey was not a good choice for Robotnik. The kids in my particular audience didn’t laugh at a single thing he said.

The writers don’t understand the theoretical physics of slow-motion. It is very annoying to watch.

I play a lot of Sonic & have loved series & Sega just as much as life itself. This movie does a fine job replicating magic from the games, while at the same time serving as an extension to character’s backstory. Was fun seeing Sonic before in Wreck-it Ralph movies, but now that he has his own film, I’m stoked Sega’s most beloved mascot got the treatment he deserved after leaving such a major mark in gaming. A couple forced & lazily delivered outdated jokes made me cringe, but was surprised that it was cleverly written for the majority of the time. Jim Carrey & video games was like my 2 fav things in the 90s, so it was like creators went out of their way to make this specifically for pop culture nostalgia junkies.… Expand

This is a movie for nostalgic parents to subject their children to with all their "why back in my day" stories that will have kids groaning and rolling their eyes.

The film itself is barely mediocre with Carrey being the only real shining spot in the whole thing. That said, this is a film that should have never been made. Ill give 1 point for the people who worked to produce this, Ill give 1 point for Carrey and 1 point for it being a kids movie that ISNT controlled by the #EvilestCorporationOnEarth That is being exceptionally generous.

Its nowhere near the best video game based movie, but its far from the worst.… Expand

Only reason this movie is somewhat bareable is due to Jimmy Carrey. The fans love it because it's about sonic but the neutral critics realise how terrible it is.

to say I was disappointed wouod he an understatement. I felt actively drained of energy and patience while watching, nearly every aspect of the movie was bad, and 90% of the jokes fell flat.
