Sonic the Hedgehog will go down in history as a generation defining moment for movies, because it took a concept destined for a crisis, but did a complete 180 and we got something truly fantastic! This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I personally loved the movie quite a lot. The characterizations for a lot of the characters like Sonic, Tom, Maddie, Dr. Robotnik and Agent Stone are excellent and rather humorous than I expected. Sonic especially is the character and the best aspect I adore in this movie. The movie gives a sympathetic take on Sonic and has him go through a character arc in terms of dealing with his loneliness. Once he finally meets with Tom face-to-face, the story escalates from there. Dr. Robotnik's characterization is excellent as well and Jim Carrey absolutely nails it in terms of his interpretation of the character. His arrogance and egomaniacal ways are comedic, but also make him menacing and intimidating as well, which I like as a result.

The only major problem I have with the movie is its pacing. The beginning shows how Sonic as a child is separated from what looks to be his mentor, Longclaw The Owl. The Echidnas launched an attack on them and Longclaw resorted to having Sonic be transported to another world (Earth) in order to protect him. After that however, you don't hear about Longclaw again for the rest of the movie. You also don't get to see much of what Sonic had to go through when he was a child who got transported to planet Earth. I think more scenes of Sonic's childhood would've added a bit more to his character arc. The movie instead fast-forwards to when he's a teenager who's already built up in himself a complex where he's a happy-go-lucky jokester who hides his deep sadness (A sad clown essentially). The insecurities Sonic deals with in terms of his loneliness are portrayed mostly well. I really like seeing how Sonic deep down is emotionally insecure and in need of companionship. It makes me sympathize with him very much. I also wished that there were more scenes and interactions between Sonic and Dr. Robotnik in order to make their rivalry even more powerful and intense.

Despite the flaws this movie has, I think this is one of the best video game movies so far. I find it to be far better written and funnier than Detective Pikachu. The other characters like Tom, Maddie and the rest of civilians are also surprisingly funny and likable and the cast did a brilliant job with their acting without being too cringy. Ben Schwartz is especially excellent as Sonic and portrays his playful and happy-go-lucky attitude so well. There simply is a lot to like about the movie despite its flaws. I highly recommend this movie to people of all ages and especially Sonic fans because of its references to the video game franchise. Lastly, don't leave the theater during the credits since you're in for a surprise.… Expand

I liked the general plot of the film. Really sets it up for a sequel that could be better than the first one. Could do without all the fortnite references but how could they have known that fortnite would become passe so fast.

I really enjoy this movie. It is a film for kids and has silly things, but you have to get into the story (which is quite simple) and you enjoy it a lot. The best scene is at the bar with the Quicksilver/Flash one moment. Jim Carrey as theI really enjoy this movie. Without any doubt this is the best video game based movie of all time. Jim Carrey is just awesome and the story is fun af. After the post credit scene i only wished the movie was only sonic and eggman and tails.

Although there is not much to see about the video game world, since it mostly follows Sonic on our world, the movie has a good flow, without being to tedious. Everything is at the right dose, "not too much, not too less". Even Jim Carrey is, in my opinion, not overused ans super hyper, as I thought he would. For a kids movie, it doesn't dumb down it's plot, nothing is over-explained, no character overused. It's just right.

It really should be praised for what it is. A solid Video game movie. Only thing weird was, that the reaction of people, seeing Sonic for the first time, was pretty nonchalant, whereas the main human character, nearly had a stroke.… Expand

I waited all my life as a kid who was a sonic fan for a sonic movie to finally happen. My daughter and I loved it. It was what I was hoping for. Perfect for a rainy sunday wih your kid. Don't expect too much, its actually fine for what its made for. Not as stupid as I anticepated, great to take your kid too. For the first time ever I am proud to say that I actually enjoyed a video game film based on a single character. The plot was solid, and I laughed at least 10 times in the movie. Sonic is a movie you can take your family to see. It's fun. It's silly. Is it shallow and formulaic? Yes. But it's targeted at kids! And it manages to be entertaining along the way. A surprisingly nice film. Nice humor and cool CGI. Jim Carry as a bad guy was very appropriate to his role. Why he was after Sonic is still not entirely clear to me, but it didn't make the film any less fun.

Definitely one of the best video game movies of all time. It was extremely funny and fun and just a really good time. I highly recommend and it also has an amazing post credit scene.

Is an nice movie, perfect to go watch with family. Director listened the comunity and changed the Sonic model to make more similar to movie and this made an great difference. I honestly had a lot of fun with this movie. I'm not the biggest Sonic fan in the world, but I remember watching the Sonic X series as a kid. It has a lot of cliches that were annoying, but then again, the way the writers play with them isI honestly had a lot of fun with this movie. I love how the human characters were good in their own right and don't overtake the film. It's not dumb human characters and sonic is in the background, this is Sonic's movie and he's played great by Ben Schwartz. I adore how the husband and wife are in love, make sacrifices and don't have marriage problems like every movie ever. The product placements really sucked and took me out of it sometimes. Good family movie and has some awesome action pieces.… Expand

Cute movie especially for families. There is some peril and light scares involving violence but very tame. My 7 and 5 year olds both have an understanding of the Sonic franchise enjoyed the movie. By no means is it a benchmark in any regard aside from the realms of its own, still woeful, little sub-genre (that of the "video game adaptation" one) "Sonic The Hedgehog" is also nowhere near the atrocity we all feared it would be after thatBy no means is it a benchmark in any regard aside from the realms of its own, still woeful, little sub-genre (that of the "video game adaptation" one) "Sonic The Hedgehog" is also nowhere near the atrocity we all feared it would be after that fateful trailer dropped back in Spring of 2019. In fact, I feel quite comfortable in saying that 8-10 year old me would have really treasured this movie. It's bright, well-paced and effervescent in spirit. You get to see Jim Carrey try his damnedest to conjure up the 90's version of himself that we all fell in love with. There's some humor that works. All of the aforementioned attributes are eons further than what I expected we'd get, and I suppose that's worthy of note. That being said, though, it's far from a perfect product. In fact, the mere presence of that word -- "product" -- in this review is a bit of a Freudian slip, I'm afraid. I understand it's hard to hide the inherent bankability of a movie when it's about one of the most iconic video game characters of all time, but I could have done without the three or four scenes of brand placement strewn about the picture. Also, you'll notice above that I said, "there's some humor that works," with the keyword in that sentence being "some." A lot of the jokes will go over well with kids (see the "floss," farts, etc.) but I'm betting most adults will grow tired of that and the material that's supposed to be geared more towards them, namely the pop culture references. Again, it's imperfect, but I'm a bit surprised at how watchable, nay, enjoyable a lot of it ended up being.… Expand

Jim Carrey is pretty good in this movie, I'd say it's just like we are watching something from his previous roles in this movie which is pretty good. This is by far the best video game film ever made. There are many geek references through out the movie and some "adult" puns / jokes that gave some good laughs. Jim Carrey is also perfect as Dr Robotnik - his performance was from good oldThis is by far the best video game film ever made. Was an amazing movie, the creators listened to the fans redesigned sonic that alone deserves you supporting it, but outside that it was amazing movie that mixed Sonics world with real world without ruining either. A great family movie for both sonic fans and people new to the franchise to enjoy. Really nicely done special effects and acting, especially with Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik. Ben Schwartz is a wonderfully loveable Sonic! 8.5/10 would recommend !

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think I went in with a different expectation of what the story/character would feel like, based on what I know from Sonic media preceding this, than what it actually came out to be. But that's okay.

For most of the movie it didn't really feel like Sonic. He was insecure and sort of helpless, and didn't really show any Sonic qualities or many heroics for that matter. There was a bit too much sub-plot with the cop and his family for my liking, and I feel that they didn't add as much Sonic aesthetic or action as they could have with this this glorious opportunity with the big screen. However, as the story progressed, Sonic became more confident and aware of his power, and the movie started to feel more what I was looking for: Sonic doing Sonic things.

With the intense final scenes playing out, along with those amazing mid-credits scenes (there are two), the movie definitely redeemed itself, and I felt really good as I left the theater (though I wanted so much more after all that!).

Though the movie as a whole was not what I expected and I was very turned off by the multiple (very apparent) Olive Garden ads and Sonic floss dancing scenes, I very much enjoyed it as a longtime fan of the series in my early 20's.… Expand

A fun family-friendly video game movie that benefits from Ben Schwartz’s wisecracking vocal performance as the titular Blue Blur, Jim Carrey as Doctor Robotnik and a last minute redesign of Sonic’s model. The opening scene is well put together and explains why Sonic had to stay on Earth, it’s actually quite sad when you see it. The comedy is charming with the callbacks to Marvel movies, Star Wars, Fast and Furious and Keanu Reeves. And, the lore of Sonic they expand on the movie is actually established quite well. I think this is the second best video game movie after Pokemon: Detective Pikachu and it’s worth seeing. Also, make sure you stay for two post credits scenes, one that will make you say “I wanna see a sequel”, which my theater agreed with when they clapped in applause after it ended.

Final score: 5 stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 10/10.

P.S. There’s only one downside in this movie which is that we didn’t get something that I hope the get in potential sequel: Jim Carrey’s Robitnik saying “PINGAS”. … Expand

It has its holes, but you have to go see it without much expectation to enjoy it. It is aimed at young people, something more familiar and fanatic. I went with friends, all over 30, we enjoyed it.

It's not a perfect movie, but it's the perfect Sonic movie. I can't imagine what I'd change in a Sonic movie. Stay after the credits, clearly set up for a sequel. Which I'm already excited to see.

Sonic The Hedgehog is a pretty entertaining video game adaptation. Youngsters will probaly love this more than your average adult, but it is well-paced and reasonably funny. You could do significantly worse than this title.

Jim Carrey has never been funnier than in this movie. Jim Carrey deserves an Oscar nomination for his hilarious performance as Robotnik, though I must admit his greatness would outshine everything else in the movie if it weren't for Sonic's lovable slapstick humor that only somewhat competes. Jim Carrey completely destroyed his role with perfection and reinvented the Sonic universe's Robotnik in a way, that is better than what the comics, shows, and games have ever done -and those Robotniks were all great in themselves. As a hardcore Sonic fan, I say Jim Carrey has permanently made a lasting powerful impact in all the right ways on this franchise. I only hope SEGA can afford him for future sequels, because he is not replaceable.

The writing for Sonic was great as was his classic slapstick antics. The hints at a larger lore for this Sonic Cinematic Universe brings great hope for many future sequels and left me creatively intrigued with the possibilities. I have a strong hunch the people behind this movie are secretly hoping this becomes the next Marvel Cinematic Universe, as they have set themselves up quite well for such an endeavor, if the money is enough to justify such an act. I'd say this movie was superior to the Detective Pikachu movie due entirely to Sonic and Robotnik destroying the movie with hilarious charm. You will laugh and smile a lot throughout this comedy even though it's PG.

Other noteworthy aspects of the film were the characters, charm, and CGI. The black female family put in the movie is sweet but feels underdeveloped -gives a subtle impression of race/sex insertion in order to feel racially and chromosomally balanced, rather than to provide enjoyable characters. The soundtrack is peppy and enjoyable, though given the Sonic universe's well-established quality soundtracks in games, I feel there is fair room for improvement in future sequels. Ryan Reynolds is a great main actor to accompany Sonic for his reactions and tough charming appeal. CGI within the movie struck a perfect balance between cartoonishness and realism in conveying Sonic and the robots attacking him. Things like fur, feathers, quills, were all well-conveyed CGI-wise. Loved certain CGI-animated cinematographic choices that made certain scenes incredibly hilarious and charming in how they enhanced the personalities of the main characters.

What The Movie Should Have Done

The lore, cultural depth, and focus on adding additional CGI characters like Sonic, were all things this movie really needed and didn't deliver. Just a couple more minutes of focus or more hinting at the backstory and world Sonic came from was heavily warranted but not given. The focus on southern relatable experiences is enjoyable to a point, but it does feel a little over-done purely for the sake of appealing to a wider audience. Taking better advantage and showing more respect for the various locations across the planet the two characters Sonic and Robotnik visit, would have made the movie more immersive and potentially funnier if more varied cultural humor was used.

Certain lines felt they could use a more dramatic delivery, and certain times where the comedic tone perhaps should have been replaced with a more dramatic tone. The writing was good, but the comedy was a little soft in places and likewise there were too many missed opportunities for edgy cool writing that weren't taken. Likewise, expanding on the cultural and meaningful impact of choices made by the characters, as well as news media and people on the streets reacting, would have been a better choice to make in order to provide a more immersive enjoyable impact for the viewer -similar to what the Marvel Cinematic Universe often does in relation to its heroes. Since the characters visit multiple locations in the world, there should have been people in those locations reacting to what's going on. It's also shown Robotnik is a genius hinted at understanding multiple other languages, so it would have been funny if he'd spoken subtitled cultural jokes in the corresponding subtitled languages.

The characters were flat with no development and apart from Ryan Reynolds, Sonic, and Jim Carrey, the other characters were lackluster in personality depth. There should have been a couple more characters at least equal in quality to Sonic in terms of writing and unique charms, but none came close. Robotnik was a league above Sonic's dialogue and personality quality -something future movies definitely should fix if they add more Sonic Universe characters. I understand that this movie would have taken too long and cost too much if these recommended choices were made; but, that is the difference between 3 and 4 stars. Hopefully more time and money is put into addressing these lacking areas in future installments.

Thank Chaos they fixed the Sonic the Hedgehog design -I would have knocked this down a point for that alone.… Expand

I went into the theater expecting the worst movie yet created. I was pleasantly surprised. It's definitely not "amazing" but it was entertaining and I had a good time watching it. I took my husband and 2 sons to go and see Birds Of Prey featuring Harley Quinn and was appalled to hear homophobic slurs used throughout the movie! Luckily the Sonic Movie was screening in the next room and my family had a much better experience!

This is the best video game movie yet. It checks all the boxes for a movie that both children and parents can enjoy. There are some stumbles in the plot, but nothing major. My only real complaint is that Sonic flossed, bro.

I knew exactly what to expect when going into this movie and it didn't disappoint. It's a fun ride full of entertaining moments as well as some easter eggs for the true Sonic fans. Great movie. Took my two nephews (10 and 6) and it was a great experience. So glad they did the redesign. O filme me surpreendeu por seus momentos marcantes.
Jim Carrey como Dr. Robotnik foi a melhor escolha.
O envolvimento do personagem com o mundo humano foi algo muito interessante, principalmente a amizade que ambos criam durante o filme.
Mas o personagem nem sempre aparenta estar presente no filme, por sua animação de vez em quando ser mal iluminada, com sombreamento.
Mas isso não chegou a afetar minha experiêncja no cinema, vale a pena conferir o filme!… Expand

Sonic's cocky personality makes for some great jokes, and makes Sonic feel more alive and like Sonic, couple that with a lot of his jokes being cheesy and it makes him feel truly like 90's Sonic. "Doughnut Lord" and "Pretzel Lady" feel a bit bland and boring that doesn't stop them from having some good moments, but overall "Doughnut Lord" and "Pretzel Lady" lack a bit depth. that is my review without going too in depth of The Sonic Movie coming from someone that's not that big a fan of the Sonic games.… Expand

In fact, I feel quite comfortable in saying that 8-10 year old me would have really treasured this movie. It's bright, well-paced and effervescent in spirit. You get to see Jim Carrey try his damnedest to conjure up the 90's version of himself that we all fell in love with. There's some humor that works. All of the aforementioned attributes are eons further than what I expected we'd get, and I suppose that's worthy of note. That being said, though, it's far from a perfect product. In fact, the mere presence of that word -- "product" -- in this review is a bit of a Freudian slip, I'm afraid. I understand it's hard to hide the inherent bankability of a movie when it's about one of the most iconic video game characters of all time, but I could have done without the three or four scenes of brand placement strewn about the picture. Also, you'll notice above that I said, "there's some humor that works," with the keyword in that sentence being "some." A lot of the jokes will go over well with kids (see the "floss," farts, etc.) but I'm betting most adults will grow tired of that and the material that's supposed to be geared more towards them, namely the pop culture references. Again, it's imperfect, but I'm a bit surprised at how watchable, nay, enjoyable a lot of it ended up being.… Expand

The character of Dr. Robotnik was fantastic - Carrey's best role in a long time. I love how the whole setup for his character was so goofy. The movie does not take itself too seriously, and that works to its advantage. They walked a fine line with that, and they nailed it.

I wouldn't mind a sequel, although I do hope they keep it simple and don't just turn everything to 11 as they tend to do with most effect-movies where the origin story has already been told. Sonic needs the charm. Keep it like that.… Expand

Another rare case of a good video-game adaptation. I was surprised how good and funny this movie was. Nearly everyone has heard of the controversy when the first trailer was released. Nearly everyone has heard of the controversy when the first trailer was released. The CGI for Sonic looked really bad (Others used words like horrible, an abomination or a sin against humanity ;-). Now the awesome part happen. The developers / people in charge listen to the complaints and changed the appearance to the Sonic design we know. I must give them my full respect. Many others have ignored the fan backlash and failed. Here it is rewarded with the best box office for a video-game movie. Nearly everything in this movie works and the actors are amazing. Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik alone is worth watching the movie. He instantly won us over and you see the fun he had in (t)his enjoyable role. It ends not here. James Marsten has a really good chemistry with Sonic. It is like a buddy road movie. Tika Sumpter has also a great chemistry with both. These four alone would be enough for a great movie. But there is more. The story is a good vehicle to deliver the character development, excellent humor garnished with tons of Easter Eggs for fans. All jokes work here and like I said Jim Carry is unbeatable. I must also praise the soundtrack. So many good songs including Where Evil Grows (Anarchy of evil mix Dr. Robotnik;-), Don't stop me now from Queen, Speed me up (Great video) and more. I will definitely buy the soundtrack and the movie. Sega does what Nintedon’t ;-). Overall an excellent video game movie that will definitely get a sequel. Watch the post (mid?) credit scene to get hyped for it.… Expand

I can never fault actors for the script. Jim Carey was Jim Carey, but I think he was close to what we should expect for Dr. Robotnik. Sonic was... okay.

Definitely exceeded all of my expectations.

I'm starting to have faith that more adaptations can be done.

Jim Carrey nailed Dr. Robotnik and really drove it home with his spectacular performance. Such a character as Dr. Robotnik can be done so wrong in so many ways and yet Jim Carrey not only did the character right but he stole every scene he was in.

Overall the film is absolutely worth seeing in theaters and I look forward to any sequels that come out.… Expand

Opinión:

El año pasado pensaba que esta película sería un desastre ya que los avances no me convencían, hoy se demostró que estuve equivocado.

Tanto el guión como la trama no son una complejidad, pero al ser una película destinada a la familia es algo que no importa. Se nota que los realizadores le pusieron cariño, dedicación y esfuerzo, porque se nota, no se da vueltas y no resulta aburrida o lenta en ningún momento.

Cada personaje tiene su carisma siendo Sonic un verdadero encanto, parlanchín como ninguno, simpático y tierno, además, su diseño está excelente. Por otro lado está Jim Carrey actuando como Jim Carrey, pero lejos de ser algo malo, es para mejor, el tipo es un crack haciendo papeles cómicos y pese a que siempre hace en ese sentido el personaje de loco de patio, cae bien y aún mantiene su esencia.

Contiene dos escenas postcreditos, siendo la segunda una pista demasiado obvia de que habrá una secuela, lo cual me encantaría.
