The original animation shows that a gender does no difference and despite the discriminating environment, Mulan are able to achieve success and work hard while also proud of being who she is, this is a powerful message and very inspiring. The movie in the other hand shows that Mulan only need unleash her unrealistic power and be successful. In the animation Mulan have very conflicting thoughts with the emperor but still saves him because she sees him as human beings. This shows her capable of making her own decision, this is honor. In the movie she does this because it is "the honor way to serve the kingdom", this is not honor, this is just teaching children that if you obey the rule you will be honored, this is not honor, this is propaganda. Not only it failed the hype and expectations, it pushes unnecessary ideologies and malicious messages to younger generation. Disney had an easy chance to just retell such a meaningful story, instead just erasing all the meaningful part and replacing it with misdirecting and meaningless story, what a shame!… Expand

Niki Caro, go end your career mate... did you know that one of the directors of Mulan 2020 researched Chinese culture for years to make their adopted child from China comfortable and have a natural upbringing? And that’s why the first one was so good? The Chinese people actually find this remake offensive and stupid. Majority in China views Liu Yifei (2020 Mulan actress) as an actress that only gets roles because of her rich Hong Kong BF and his connections. She is viewed as the “actress who looks good but acts trash and has no soul in her eyes”. I literally made this account just to state the truth about this crap... Added unnecessary black magic, unnecessary stunts and tricks like running vertivally up a 50 foot wall, didn't stay true to the storyline. There's a phoenix and no Mushu or Cricky Mulan already knows how to fight and do parkour since a child, they added a sister to the movie for no reason what so ever. It’s filled with plot holes and has zero character development or even any insight into any characters at all. The editing is awful, the action is boring, the script is comically bad. Watching the movie filled me with rage. This movie only exists to make money, there is no heart or soul in any of the directing, performances, and writing. Paying money to watch this movie is an ethically bad thing to do as you will be justifying more insulting and lifeless remakes in the future. The removal of the key aspects that made the original great made this movie so much worse. Mulans cricket (lucky) and dragon (mushu) are no where to be found. She was given a sister in place of her pet dog (brother). Many of the events that happen don't make any sense, they were trying to force certain events into the movie that were in the original and couldn't figure out how to do it. She exposes her womanhood at the behest of a witch... I mean really. There was no witchcraft in the original, or in Chinese histories rendition of mulan… Expand

There weren't any scenes that kept a kid captivated and intrigued for any amount of time. Albeit it being cheesy, epecially during the most pivotal battle between heroine and villan where a stupid Phoenix' wings are juxtaposed behind Mulan, this movie was just a terrible remake. My advise, NEVER included political or current social events in any Disney movie. People need relief from all the crazy in the world and Disney should be a "happy" place. This was not that. Yup, gave it a zero. I was so excited for my favourite Disney film to come to life. I knew there were going to be changes and some characters wouldn’t be there, but it went fully dark. I was actually board. More of a action film than anything.

It's so simple. You have to be a extremely bad writer/director/producer to make something so great so bad. It's also extremely unethical to take someone's life's work and change the source material with such disrespect. Then, just to make everything so much worse, you add on top of that fan baiting. Fan Baiting is done on purpose to not only stir up controversy for publicity but also serves as a barrier to real criticism and ensures that the show will succeed because if anyone has a different opinion, they will just be labeled as a "racist/sexist/transphobe/etc." and their opinion is ignored. It's a method to make everyone think you're virtuous when really you're just a horrible person spreading hate with anyone who has a different opinion than your own. You act like you're fighting fascism by spreading and using fascism. It's hypocrisy in action.… Expand
