This is a stupid story that betrays the original text or the animation movie. Mulan is not a born jedi warrior. The movie is longer but somehow it felt rushed on every single character development.

this is more senseless more original or 1998 movie 1. That main lead (mulan) have only one expressions in every scenes (maybe it my own opinion and i don't know you agree or not).

2 . They remove dragon and cricket for good reason

3. They add phoenix lol. phoenix was never belong to china they belong tp arabian story.

4 . Too much magical. in this movie mulan born with chi power. she defended everyone with 0% experience and without training . there is also a witch in movie .

Very bad adaptation, the cartoon is 10 times better. Looked like a low budget movie. No fun at all, bad stunts and battles, music is missing, moshu is missing, a lot of wierd battles, dumb scenes and more...it was a waste of time

I get they wanted to make a realistic movie but this just plain and simple didn't work. The animated movie had heart and a message; the live action film had none of those. The musical numbers in Mulan were some of the best music out there; they could have at least had many of the songs in this film in instrumental form; but nope! Mulan in this film is Rey like in Star Wars; super powerful from the beginning. There's no training, no struggle, a character you could care less about. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a disaster. 1) Mulan's decision moment : It was a life-risking decision to go to a war on her father's behalf. Let alone the fact that the decision making scene was acclaimed by many fans as the best scene of the animation film, it is indeed an important moment for this very movie to switch the gear from 'Mulan as just a girl' to 'Mulan risking the life to save her father'. In the movie, there was no scene to show this transition in any way. She swung the sword and suddenly she's on the horse with full armors on. What the..

2) Mulan's growth as a soldier : Okay. I admit I'm missing "I'll make a man out of you" so much. But even without the song, there's no growth of Mulan as a soldier because she's born with this special gift, chi. I felt like I was watching some Asian version of a fake Star Wars Jedi movie. As an Asian, I'm sick and tired of western movies abusing the concepts of chi, yin, and yang. Chi is not a force. It was even comedic when I saw the emperor also used the chi.

3) Confusing message : This movie made many sacrifices for the sake of political correctness. And I get that it was meaningful to have Mulan reveal her gender herself and get accepted as a legitimate woman warrior (I think she was accepted as a woman warrior also in the animation but let's move on). But this politically correct, strong Mulan does not fit with traditional Confucian values such as "Devotion to family", and "Loyalty to the dynasty". It's like in the grey area. The animation movie addressed this so smoothly that it managed to successfully lift Mulan as a legitimate war hero while not giving too much stress to Mulan being a woman or other Confucian value. Mixing the political correctness with traditional Confucian values was just a wrong cocktail. It never works that way. You either go progressive or stay exactly where it was in the animation. This actually feels like a setback, and I cannot understand what the heck the message is from this movie.… Expand

Being an Asian, who was born and raised in Asia, I grew up watching a lot of Chinese movies like this and trust me, there are a lot of great Kung Fu movies with way better production and better storyline. This is just an ordinary Kung Fu movie which is PUSHED to be Mulan because they know we all love the animated version so they could make money out of it. Talking about the production, editing was terrible. Several scenes were annoyingly obvious that they shot in a small studio and lightings were really bad. And those fireworks at the end looked fake af. Seriously tho! Gong Li role was unnecessary for the movie and she died with no reason (Awww... poor Gong Li). I mean if you want to add a new role, why don’t you just make it awesome since Gong Li is a great actress and she can play any role you want really. Last but not least, they were trying to creat a “safe work place” like, Mulan can’t fall in love with her Commanding officer (Li Shang in animated version) because producer or director is supporting “Me Too Movement” so it is inappropriate!? TF gurl! You lost your god damn mind. Why can’t you just leave your political opinions out of this movie? No one was pushed to fall in love with a commander like the way you pushed this typical kung fu movie to be Mulan. As a Disney fan myself, I didn’t feel anything Disney and It really is a huge disappointment. Mulan is an admiring and inspiring Disney princess who risked her own life to save her family and at the end, she saved the whole China but this version didn’t sell me anything to inspire at all. Forgettable and unremarkable movie solely produced to appease Chinese audiences. Wouldn’t pass as a made for TV movie in most Western countries.

Filming in areas of China where innocent people are put into concentration camps because of their religion and then even thanking local government authorities in the credits is absolutely disgusting. And don’t even get me started on the lead actress supporting violent police crackdowns...

In short, please avoid spending any money on this movie. One can only hope Disney learns something from this debacle and stops appeasing the Chinese government.… Expand

I was very dissatisfied with this film. I loved the classic but this film is just bad. It is bad for both type of audiences the ones who watched the classic and people who are seeing this for the first time. In the classic movie, Mulan goesI was very dissatisfied with this film. In the classic movie, Mulan goes from a quirky lovable girl to a confident strong woman who can stand up to anyone. However, in this one, she has the super power of Chi that lets her do gravity deifying stunts (which is more in tune of Bollywood movies), she can master skills faster than anyone else and becomes a very bland character. The comedic element is gone from the movie and replaced with a more serious tone, which is hard to take seriously when the fighting begins some combatant’s just fly into the air or running and doing tricks on the wall. This movies has some pros to it but it's cons far outweigh the pros. Overall I would say If you love the classic don't watch it you would waste $30, your time and be pissed by the end. In addition, for those who are just going to watch it for the first time, you would still waste $30 and your time, but you would not be as butt hurt as the classic lovers.… Expand

I can't even get over the fact that she fought with her long hair down which should be annoying af in battle. Too many dumb plot points crammed in, leaving no time for meaningful exposition. Remember when in the original, they introduce the doll of the girl in the mountain village and Mulan later places it at the grave of the General? None of that. They just find a bunch of discarded armor someone dumped in a smoldering building and tell the audience to be sad about it.

The sound track is terribly dull by comparison to the original, even if you disregard the shameful lack of musical numbers.

And yes, I get it, the fighting scenes reference classic Chinese martial arts movies, so they're not supposed to look realistic. Doesn't change the fact that they are terribly badly done, just to make extra sure the audience gets the reference.

I watched it. Don't repeat my mistake.… Expand

Do you like the original Mulan? If so, you do not want to watch this movie. It will ruin your childhood memories. Do yourself a favor and go watch something else. Terrible actors and terribly boring.

Honestly a terrible movie. If I had to choose between a quarter and this movie for free, I would choose the quarter because at least I’m getting something that has value. Disney just needs to stop recreating live action remakes that completely ruin the point of the original. Cartoon Mulan was a badass. Live action Mulan was a “chosen one” with magical powers that completely discredits the gender equality point of the original. If I wanted to watch a mediocre movie about a character with no special talents or abilities who thrives off of the hard work of others and the magical powers of being the main character, I would just rewatch Harry Potter. While I understand the plot had to be changed to a certain degree for the audience’s interest, since no one wants to watch a literal live recreation of the animated movie (although let’s be honest, none of the live action remakes were wanted in the first place and the more they continue the more it feels like the Disney corporation is just using us all like a cash cow and I swear to god this needs to stop) one way it was changed was by changing the genre of the movie. Which isn’t a bad thing. But this means that there is absolutely no comic relief, mushu (without a doubt the best character) is erased from the scrip along with the cricket, the three dudes at the war camp she becomes best friends with are misogynistic **** and have no redeemable qualities and cute scenes that they do recreate just end up flopping. This tied with the moral of the story now being exclusively that family is important and if you are a girl you can only participate in the war defending your nation if you are magically chosen with chi or qi or whatever and for no other reason than that, this movie becomes absolutely pointless. I among many wanted this movie to be success due to the representation that it would provide for many, but this bastardization just feels like Disney trying to get more and more money from its audience along with into the good grace of China.… Expand

Movie that degrades the audience,company that made it and the original movie to such a baffling degree that I am almost certain Disney will ram itself into the ground if they continue on this trend of remaking classic animated movies intoMovie that degrades the audience,company that made it and the original movie to such a baffling degree that I am almost certain Disney will ram itself into the ground if they continue on this trend of remaking classic animated movies into "live action" ones that are confusing, boring to watch and even offensive to some people. with stories that don't feel refined or improved instead they just elude back to the far superior originals and make us feel like we've watching an enhanced version of what we once and most likely still adore,because of flashy graphics but with a harrowing lack of artistic integrity and storytelling that would make any text my 12 yo brother has ever written for his English classes infinitely better and more entertaining than anything Disney has produced in the last 5 years. Only thing saving Disney are these strange and shallow characters we recognise because we saw them already and know countours of their desires and motivations based on previous films. It is a shame that we no longer have a kin with them because of writters utter incompetence to revive/revamp already well established plots. Instead They try to make it more edgier, more mature and subsequently our heroes, princesses, thieves, genies and hell even CGI warthogs with an affinity for farts and the opera go onto these grandour adventures and quests that are supposed to help them find who they are and simultaneously fulfill their magical destiny.
Whilst in reality our protagonists arcs are filled with contrivances because of vague and hollow story lines that demand of them to be so. it will leave us, the audience disappointed at best and just sad at worst . A fake guided crown made out of plastic breaking at the smallest of pressures. This is what Disney has become. Hollow machine of corporate greed shoving these unwanted movies down our throats.… Expand
